Correlation functions in scalar field theory at large charge

We compute general higher-point functions in the sector of large charge operators $ϕ^n$, $\barϕ^n$ at large charge in $O(2)$ $(\bar ϕϕ)^2$ theory. We find that there is a special class of "extremal" correlators having only one insertion of $\bar ϕ^n$ that have a remarkably simple form in the double-scaling limit $n\to \infty $ at fixed $g\,n^2\equiv λ$, where $g\simε$ is the coupling at the $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher fixed point in $4-ε$ dimensions. In this limit, also non-extremal correlators can be computed. As an example, we give the complete formula for $ \langle ϕ(x_1)^{n}\,ϕ(x_2)^{n}\,\barϕ(x_3)^{n}\,\barϕ(x_4)^{n}\rangle$, which reveals an interesting structure.

Displaced orbits and electric-magnetic black hole binaries

In presence of magnetic fields, the orbits of charged particles can be displaced from the equatorial plane. We study circular orbits of electrically charged massive objects around a magnetic black hole in the probe approximation. We show that there exist a one-parameter family of circular orbits at constant polar angle $θ$ and constant radius $r$, parameterized by the angular momentum. The angle $θ$ can be made arbitrarily small by increasing the charge-to-mass ratio of the orbiting particle, but when this is a Reissner-Nordstr\" om black hole, the condition $q\leq m$ implies that orbits exist only for $|θ-\fracπ{2}|< {\rm arccot}(2\sqrt{2})$. We show that the circular orbits are stable under small perturbations in the $θ$ and $r$ directions. We also discuss the Newtonian approximation and a binary system of electric and magnetic black holes, each one describing a circular orbit with no central force.

On the UV completion of the $O(N)$ model in $6-ε$ dimensions: a stable large-charge sector

We study large charge sectors in the $O(N)$ model in $6-ε$ dimensions. For $4<d<6$, in perturbation theory, the quartic $O(N)$ theory has a UV stable fixed point at large $N$. It was recently argued that this fixed point can be described in terms of an IR fixed point of a cubic $O(N)$ model. By considering a double scaling limit of large charge and weak couplings, we compute two-point and all "extremal" higher-point correlation functions for large charge operators and find a precise equivalence between both pictures. Instanton instabilities are found to be exponentially suppressed at large charge. We also consider correlation function of $U(1)$-invariant meson operators in the $O(2N)\supset U(1)\times SU(N)$ theory, as a first step towards tests of (higher spin) $AdS/CFT$.

D branes in background fluxes and Nielsen-Olesen instabilities

In quantum field theory, charged particles with spin $\geq 1$ may become tachyonic in the present of magnetic fluxes above some critical field, signaling an instability of the vacuum. The phenomenon is generic, in particular, similar instabilities are known to exist in open and closed string theory, where a spinning string state can become tachyonic above a critical field. In compactifications involving RR fluxes $F_{p+2}$, the quantum states which could become tachyonic by the same Nielsen-Olesen mechanism are Dp branes. By constructing an appropriate background with RR magnetic flux that takes into account back-reaction, we identify the possible tachyonic Dp brane states and compute the formula for the energy spectrum in a sector. More generally, we argue that in any background RR magnetic flux, there are high spin Dp quantum states which become very light at critical fields.

Large N Correlation Functions in Superconformal Field Theories

We compute correlation functions of chiral primary operators in N=2 superconformal theories at large N using a construction based on supersymmetric localization recently developed by Gerchkovitz et al. We focus on N=4 SYM as well as on superconformal QCD. In the case of N=4 we recover the free field theory results as expected due to non-renormalization theorems. In the case of superconformal QCD we study the planar expansion in the large N limit. The final correlators admit a simple generalization to a finite N formula which exactly matches the various small $N$ results in the literature.

Exact partition function in $U(2)\times U(2)$ ABJM theory deformed by mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms

We exactly compute the partition function for $U(2)_k\times U(2)_{-k}$ ABJM theory on $\mathbb S^3$ deformed by mass $m$ and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter $ζ$. For $k=1,2$, the partition function has an infinite number of Lee-Yang zeros. For general $k$, in the decompactification limit the theory exhibits a quantum (first-order) phase transition at $m=2ζ$.

Large $N_c$ from Seiberg-Witten Curve and Localization

When N = 2 gauge theories are compactified on $S^4$, the large $N_c$ limit then selects a unique vacuum of the theory determined by saddle-point equations, which remains determined even in the flat-theory limit. We show that exactly the same equations can be reproduced purely from Seiberg-Witten theory, describing a vacuum where magnetically charged particles become massless, and corresponding to a specific degenerating limit of the Seiberg-Witten spectral curve where $2N_c-2$ branch points join pairwise giving $a_{Dn}=0$, $n=1,...,N_c-1$. We consider the specific case of N = 2 $SU(N_c)$ SQCD coupled with $2N_f$ massive fundamental flavors. We show that the theory exhibits a quantum phase transition where the critical point describes a particular Argyres-Douglas point of the Riemann surface.

Resurgent Analysis of Localizable Observables in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Localization methods have recently led to a plethora of new exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories, as certain observables may be computed in terms of matrix integrals. These can then be evaluated by making use of standard large N techniques, or else via perturbative expansions in the gauge coupling. Either approximation often leads to observables given in terms of asymptotic series, which need to be properly defined in order to obtain nonperturbative results. At the same time, resurgent analysis has recently been successfully applied to several problems, e.g., in quantum, field and string theories, precisely to overcome this issue and construct nonperturbative answers out of asymptotic perturbative expansions. The present work uses exact results from supersymmetric localization to address the resurgent structure of the free energy and partition function of Chern-Simons and ABJM gauge theories in three dimensions, and of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions. For each case, the complete structure of Borel singularities is exactly determined, and the relation of these singularities with the large-order behavior of (multi-instanton) perturbative expansions is made fully precise.

Supersymmetric $U(N)$ Chern-Simons-matter theory and phase transitions

We study ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ Chern-Simons with $N_{f}$ fundamental and $N_{f}$ antifundamental chiral multiplets of mass $m$ in the complete parameter space spanned by $(g,\,m,\,N,\,N_{f})$, where $g$ denotes the coupling constant. In particular, we analyze the matrix model description of its partition function, both at finite $N$ using the method of orthogonal polynomials together with Mordell integrals and, at large $N$ with fixed $g$, using the theory of Toeplitz determinants. We show for the massless case that there is an explicit realization of the Giveon-Kutasov duality. For finite $N$, with $N>N_{f}$, three regimes that exactly correspond to the known three large $N$ phases of theory are identified and characterized.

Large N phase transitions in supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory with massive matter

We study three-dimensional {\cal N}=2 U(N) Chern-Simons theory on S^3 coupled to 2N_f chiral multiplets deformed by mass terms. The partition function localizes to a matrix integral, which can be exactly computed in the large N limit. In a specific decompactification limit, the theory exhibits quantum (third-order) phase transitions at finite critical values of the coupling. The theory presents three phases when 0 < N_f < N and two phases when N_f\geq N. The vacuum expectation value of the supersymmetric circular Wilson loop has a discontinuity in the first derivative.

N=2 gauge theories and quantum phases

The partition function of general N = 2 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theories on a four-sphere localizes to a matrix integral. We show that in the decompactification limit, and in a certain regime, the integral is dominated by a saddle point. When this takes effect, the free energy is exactly given in terms of the prepotential, $F=-R^2 Re (4πi {\cal F}) $, evaluated at the singularity of the Seiberg-Witten curve where the dual magnetic variable $a_D$ vanishes. We also show that the superconformal fixed point of massive supersymmetric QCD with gauge group SU(2) is associated with the existence of a quantum phase transition. Finally, we discuss the case of N=2* SU(2) Yang-Mills theory and show that the theory does not exhibit phase transitions.

Evidence for Large-N Phase Transitions in N=2* Theory

We solve, using localization, for the large-N master field of N=2* super-Yang-Mills theory. From that we calculate expectation values of large Wilson loops and the free energy on the four-sphere. At weak coupling, these observables only receive non-perturbative contributions. The analytic solution holds for a finite range of the 't Hooft coupling and terminates at the point of a large-N phase transition. We find evidence that as the coupling is further increased the theory undergoes an infinite sequence of similar transitions that accumulate at infinity.

Rigorous Test of Non-conformal Holography: Wilson Loops in N=2* Theory

N=2* gauge theory in four space-time dimensions arises as a deformation of the parent N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mill theory under which its hypermultiplet acquires a mass. This theory, on the one hand, has a known supergravity dual and on the other hand is amenable to localization. We explain, using localization, a dynamical selection of the supergravity Coulomb branch vacuum at large N. We also demonstrate that large Wilson loops obey perimeter law, again finding exact match between direct field-theory calculations and string theory. Additionally, we compute free energy at large 't Hooft coupling.

String theory dualities and supergravity divergences

We demonstrate how duality invariance of the low energy expansion of the four-graviton amplitude in type II string theory determines the precise coefficients of multiloop logarithmic ultraviolet divergences of maximal supergravity in various dimensions. This is illustrated by the explicit moduli-dependence of terms of the form D^{2k}R^4, with k<= 3, in the effective action. Furthermore, we show that in the supergravity limit the perturbative contributions are swamped by an accumulation of non-perturbative effects of zero-action instantons.

A note on perturbation series in supersymmetric gauge theories

Exact results in supersymmetric Chern-Simons and N=2 Yang-Mills theories can be used to examine the quantum behavior of observables and the structure of the perturbative series. For the U(2) x U(2) ABJM model, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the perturbative series for the partition function and write it as a Borel transform. Similar results are obtained for N=2 SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory with four fundamental flavors and in N=2* super Yang-Mills theory, for the partition function as well as for the expectation values for Wilson loop and 't Hooft loop operators (in the 0 and 1 instanton sectors). In all examples, one has an alternate perturbation series where the coefficient of the nth term increases as n!, and the perturbation series are Borel summable. We also calculate the expectation value for a Wilson loop operator in the N=2* SU(N) theory at large N in different regimes of the 't Hooft gauge coupling and mass parameter. For large masses, the calculation reproduces the running gauge coupling for the pure N=2 SYM theory.

Superconductors for superstrings on AdS_5 x T^{1,1}

We construct a one-parameter family of five-dimensional N=2 supergravity Lagrangians with an SU(2,1) / U(2) hypermultiplet. For certain values of the parameter, these are argued to describe the dynamics of scalar modes of superstrings on AdS_5 x T^{1,1}, and therefore to be dual to specific chiral primary operators of Klebanov-Witten superconformal field theory. We demonstrate that, below a critical temperature, the thermodynamics is dominated by charged black holes with hair for the scalars that are dual to the operator of lowest conformal dimension 3/2. The system thus enters into a superconducting phase where <Tr[A_k B_l]> condenses.

Supersymmetric BCS

We implement relativistic BCS superconductivity in N=1 supersymmetric field theories with a U(1)_R symmetry. The simplest model contains two chiral superfields with a Kahler potential modified by quartic terms. We study the phase diagram of the gap as a function of the temperature and the specific heat. The superconducting phase transition turns out to be first order, due to the scalar contribution to the one-loop potential. By virtue of supersymmetry, the critical curves depend logarithmically with the UV cutoff, rather than quadratically as in standard BCS theory. We comment on the difficulties in having fermion condensates when the chemical potential is instead coupled to a baryonic U(1)_B current. We also discuss supersymmetric models of BCS with canonical Kahler potential constructed by "integrating-in" chiral superfields.

Eisenstein series for higher-rank groups and string theory amplitudes

Scattering amplitudes of superstring theory are strongly constrained by the requirement that they be invariant under dualities generated by discrete subgroups, E_n(Z), of simply-laced Lie groups in the E_n series (n<= 8). In particular, expanding the four-supergraviton amplitude at low energy gives a series of higher derivative corrections to Einstein's theory, with coefficients that are automorphic functions with a rich dependence on the moduli. Boundary conditions supplied by string and supergravity perturbation theory, together with a chain of relations between successive groups in the E_n series, constrain the constant terms of these coefficients in three distinct parabolic subgroups. Using this information we are able to determine the expressions for the first two higher derivative interactions (which are BPS-protected) in terms of specific Eisenstein series. Further, we determine key features of the coefficient of the third term in the low energy expansion of the four-supergraviton amplitude (which is also BPS-protected) in the E_8 case. This is an automorphic function that satisfies an inhomogeneous Laplace equation and has constant terms in certain parabolic subgroups that contain information about all the preceding terms.

Fuzzy spheres at finite temperature supported by Wilson lines

We study the fate of the fuzzy sphere vacuum solutions in the SU(N)xSU(N+M) Klebanov-Strassler theory at finite temperature and at weak coupling. We find that thermal effects push the S^2 radius --a modulus at T=0-- towards vanishing size. We then show that the fuzzy sphere can be stabilized by adding a temporal Wilson line for a background U(1) gauge field, which can be associated with either the baryonic or the R-symmetry. Thus, upon deforming the KS theory with a background gauge field for a global symmetry, we find a phase of broken baryonic symmetry at weak coupling surviving at finite temperature.

Holographic Superconductors from Gauged Supergravity

We consider minimal setups arising from different truncations of N=8 five-dimensional SO(6) gauged supergravity to study phase transitions involving spontaneous breaking of any of the U(1) symmetries in U(1)xU(1)xU(1)in SO(6). These truncations only keep the three relevant vector fields, four complex scalar fields carrying U(1) charges, plus two neutral scalar fields required by consistency. By considering thermal ensembles with different fixed U(1) charge densities and solving the complete equations including the full back-reaction, in some cases we find instabilities towards the formation of hairy black holes, which lead to second order transitions, resulting from a thermodynamical competition between different sectors. We argue that these should be the dominant thermodynamical instabilities in the full ten-dimensional type IIB theory. In other cases we find unstable branches of hairy black holes that extend to temperatures above a critical temperature (`retrograde condensation'). The results can be used as a first step to understand new aspects of the phase diagram of large N, N=4 SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory with fixed charge densities.

N=1 SQCD-like theories with N_f massive flavors from AdS/CFT and beta functions

We study new supergravity solutions related to large-$N_c$ ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge field theories with a large number $N_f$ of massive flavors. We use a recently proposed framework based on configurations with $N_c$ color D5 branes and a distribution of $N_f$ flavor D5 branes, governed by a function $N_f S(r)$. Although the system admits many solutions, under plausible physical assumptions the relevant solution is uniquely determined for each value of $x\equiv N_f/N_c$. In the IR region, the solution smoothly approaches the deformed Maldacena-Núñez solution. In the UV region it approaches a linear dilaton solution. For $x<2$ the gauge coupling $β_g $ function computed holographically is negative definite, in the UV approaching the NSVZ $β$ function with anomalous dimension $γ_0= -1/2$ (approaching $-3/(32π^2)(2N_c-N_f)g^3$)), and with $β_g \to-\infty $ in the IR. For $x=2$, $β_g$ has a UV fixed point at strong coupling, suggesting the existence of an IR fixed point at a lower value of the coupling. We argue that the solutions with $x>2$ describe a "Seiberg dual" picture where $N_f-2N_c$ flips sign.

Automorphic properties of low energy string amplitudes in various dimensions

This paper explores the moduli-dependent coefficients of higher derivative interactions that appear in the low-energy expansion of the four-graviton amplitude of maximally supersymmetric string theory compactified on a d-torus. These automorphic functions are determined for terms up to order D^6R^4 and various values of d by imposing a variety of consistency conditions. They satisfy Laplace eigenvalue equations with or without source terms, whose solutions are given in terms of Eisenstein series, or more general automorphic functions, for certain parabolic subgroups of the relevant U-duality groups. The ultraviolet divergences of the corresponding supergravity field theory limits are encoded in various logarithms, although the string theory expressions are finite. This analysis includes intriguing representations of SL(d) and SO(d,d) Eisenstein series in terms of toroidally compactified one and two-loop string and supergravity amplitudes.

Models of Holographic superconductivity

We construct general models for holographic superconductivity parametrized by three couplings which are functions of a real scalar field and show that under general assumptions they describe superconducting phase transitions. While some features are universal and model independent, important aspects of the quantum critical behavior strongly depend on the choice of couplings, such as the order of the phase transition and critical exponents of second-order phase transitions. In particular, we study a one-parameter model where the phase transition changes from second to first order above some critical value of the parameter and a model with tunable critical exponents.

On the thermodynamics of moving bodies

We model the situation in which a photon detector moves with constant velocity in a Minkowski heat-bath by considering an Unruh-DeWitt detector, with variable energy gap $\hbar ω$, moving on a brane, at a non-zero (Unruh) temperature $T$ due to acceleration in an orthogonal direction. We compute the angular response for a 2-brane. At low velocity we find agreement with the standard Doppler shift formula in the limit $\hbarω\gg T$ in which the photon gas is classical; otherwise there is a discrepancy, which we attribute to angular-dependence of the induced emission rate. At relativistic velocities our result disagrees with the standard formula even when $\hbarω\gg T$, and above a critical velocity there is no response from the detector within a `backward' cone. We discuss potential implications for observations of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

p-wave Holographic Superconductors and five-dimensional gauged Supergravity

We explore five-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ $SU(2)\times U(1)$ and ${\cal N}=8$ SO(6) gauged supergravities as frameworks for condensed matter applications. These theories contain charged (dilatonic) black holes and 2-forms which have non-trivial quantum numbers with respect to U(1) subgroups of SO(6). A question of interest is whether they also contain black holes with two-form hair with the required asymptotic to give rise to holographic superconductivity. We first consider the ${\cal N}=4$ case, which contains a complex two-form potential $A_{μν}$ which has U(1) charge $\pm 1$. We find that a slight generalization, where the two-form potential has an arbitrary charge $q$, leads to a five-dimensional model that exhibits second-order superconducting transitions of p-wave type where the role of order parameter is played by $A_{μν}$, provided $q \gtrsim 5.6$. We identify the operator that condenses in the dual CFT, which is closely related to ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory with chemical potentials. Similar phase transitions between R-charged black holes and black holes with 2-form hair are found in a generalized version of the ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity Lagrangian where the two-forms have charge $q\gtrsim 1.8$.

Phenomenological Models of Holographic Superconductors and Hall currents

We study general models of holographic superconductivity parametrized by four arbitrary functions of a neutral scalar field of the bulk theory. The models can accommodate several features of real superconductors, like arbitrary critical temperatures and critical exponents in a certain range, and perhaps impurities, boundary or thickness effects. We find analytical expressions for the critical exponents of the general model and show that they satisfy the Rushbrooke identity. An important subclass of models exhibits second order phase transitions. A study of the specific heat shows that general models can also describe holographic superconductors undergoing first, second and third (or higher) order phase transitions. We discuss how small deformations of the HHH model lead to the appearance of resonance peaks in the conductivity, which become narrower as the temperature is gradually decreased, without the need for tuning mass of the scalar to be close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. Finally, we investigate the inclusion of a generalized "theta term" producing Hall effect without magnetic field.

Relativistic Kinematics and Stationary Motions

The relativistic jerk, snap and all higher-order kinematical D-vectors are defined for the motion of a massive particle in a D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We illustrate the formalism with stationary motions, for which we provide a new, Lorentz covariant, classification. We generalize some cases to branes, explaining the relevance to uniform motion in a heat bath. We also consider some non-stationary motions, including motion with constant proper jerk, and free fall into a black hole as viewed from a GEMS perspective.

Non-linear theory for multiple M2 branes

We present a manifestly SO(8) invariant non-linear Lagrangian for describing the non-abelian dynamics of the bosonic degrees of freedom of N coinciding M2 branes in flat spacetime. The theory exhibits a gauge symmetry structure of the BF type (semidirect product of SU(N) and translations) and at low energies it reduces exactly to the bosonic part of the Lorentzian Bagger-Lambert Lagrangian for group SU(N). There are eight scalar fields satisfying a free-scalar equation. When one of them takes a large expectation value, the non-linear Lagrangian gets simplified and the theory can be connected to the non-abelian Lagrangian describing the dynamics of N coinciding D2 branes. As an application, we show that the BPS fuzzy funnel solution describing M2 branes ending into a single M5 brane is an exact solution of the non-linear system.

Non-renormalisation Conditions in Type II String Theory and Maximal Supergravity

This paper considers general features of the derivative expansion of Feynman diagram contributions to the four-graviton scattering amplitude in eleven-dimensional supergravity compactified on a two-torus. These are translated into statements about interactions of the form D^2k R^4 in type II superstring theories, assuming the standard M-theory/string theory duality relationships, which provide powerful constraints on the effective interactions. In the ten-dimensional IIA limit we find that there can be no perturbative contributions beyond k string loops (for k>0). Furthermore, the genus h=k contributions are determined exactly by the one-loop eleven-dimensional supergravity amplitude for all values of k. A plausible interpretation of these observations is that the sum of h-loop Feynman diagrams of maximally extended supergravity is less divergent than might be expected and could be ultraviolet finite in dimensions d < 4 + 6/h -- the same bound as for N=4 Yang--Mills.

Cross sections for production of closed superstrings at high energy colliders in brane world models

In brane world string models with large extra dimensions, there are processes where fermion and antifermion (or two gluons) can annihilate producing a light particle (e.g. gluon) carrying transverse momentum and a Kaluza-Klein graviton or an excited closed string that propagates in the extra dimensions. In high energy colliders, this process gives a missing momentum signature. We compute the total cross section for this process within the context of type II superstring theory in the presence of a D brane. This includes all missing energy sources for this string theory model up to s=8M_s^2, and it can be used to put new limits on the string scale M_s.

String spectrum of curved string backgrounds obtained by T-duality and shifts of polar angles

A class of exactly solvable string models can be obtained by starting with flat space and combining T-duality and shifts of angular coordinates of several polar planes. The models are the analog of the Lunin-Maldacena β-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 type IIB string background, which is dual to a Leigh-Strassler deformation of \N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory. We determine the complete physical string spectrum for two string models obtained in this way, by explicitly solving the string equations and quantizing in terms of free creation and annihilation operators. We also show that the 3-parameter (b_1,b_2,b_3) model, obtained by three independent TsT transformations, has tachyons in some regions of the parameter space.

The Information Problem in Black Hole Evaporation: Old and Recent Results

The formation and evaporation of a black hole can be viewed as a scattering process in Quantum Gravity. Semiclassical arguments indicate that the process should be non-unitary, and that all the information of the original quantum state forming the black hole should be lost after the black hole has completely evaporated, except for its mass, charge and angular momentum. This would imply a violation of basic principles of quantum mechanics. We review some proposed resolutions to the problem, including developments in string theory and a recent proposal by Hawking. We also suggest a novel approach which makes use of some ingredients of earlier proposals. Effects of D-instantons in string amplitudes

We investigate the different energy regimes in the conjectured SL(2,Z) invariant four graviton scattering amplitude that incorporates D-instanton contributions in 10d type IIB superstring theory. We show that the infinite product over SL(2,Z) rotations is convergent in the whole complex plane s,t. For high energies s>> 1, fixed scattering angle, and very weak coupling g<< 1/s, the four-graviton amplitude exhibits the usual exponential suppression. As the energy approaches 1/g, the suppression gradually diminishes until there appears a strong amplification near a new pole coming from the exchange of a (p,q) string. At energies s<< 1/\sqrt{g}, the pure D instanton contribution to the scattering amplitude is found to produce a factor $A_4^{Dinst}\cong \exp (c g^{3/2}e^{-{2π\over g}} s^3)$. At energies $1/\sqrt{g} << s<< 1/g $, the D-instanton factor becomes $A_4^{Dinst}\cong \exp (2 e^{-{2π\over g_s}+πg_s s^2})$. At higher energies s>> 1/g the D-instanton contribution becomes very important, and one finds an oscillatory behavior which alternates suppression and amplification. This suggests that non-perturbative effects can lead to a high-energy behavior which is significantly different from the perturbative string behavior.

Non-perturbative states in type II superstring theory from classical spinning membranes

We find a new family of exact solutions in membrane theory, representing toroidal membranes spinning in several planes. They have energy square proportional to the sum of the different angular momenta, generalizing Regge-type string solutions to membrane theory. By compactifying the eleven dimensional theory on a circle and on a torus, we identify a family of new non-perturbative states of type IIA and type IIB superstring theory (which contains the perturbative spinning string solutions of type II string theory as a particular case). The solution represents a spinning bound state of D branes and fundamental strings. Then we find similar solutions for membranes on $AdS_7\times S^4$ and $AdS_4\times S^7$. We also consider the analogous solutions in SU(N) matrix theory, and compute the energy. They can be interpreted as rotating open strings with D0 branes attached to their endpoints.

Semiclassical decay of strings with maximum angular momentum

We study the classical breaking of a highly excited (closed or open) string state on the leading Regge trajectory, represented by a rotating soliton solution, and we find the resulting solutions for the outgoing two pieces, describing two specific excited string states. This classical picture reproduces very accurately the precise analytical relation of the masses $M_1$ and $M_2$ of the decay products found in a previous quantum computation. The decay rate is naturally described in terms of a semiclassical formula. We also point out some interesting features of the evolution after the splitting process.
