Bidirectional Communication Control for Human-Robot Collaboration

A fruitful collaboration is based on the mutual knowledge of each other skills and on the possibility of communicating their own limits and proposing alternatives to adapt the execution of a task to the capabilities of the collaborators. This paper aims at reproducing such a scenario in a human-robot collaboration setting by proposing a novel communication control architecture. Exploiting control barrier functions, the robot is made aware of its (dynamic) skills and limits and, thanks to a local predictor, it is able to assess if it is possible to execute a requested task and, if not, to propose alternative by relaxing some constraints. The controller is interfaced with a communication infrastructure that enables human and robot to set up a bidirectional communication about the task to execute and the human to take an informed decision on the behavior of the robot. A comparative experimental validation is proposed.

Fast construction of optimal composite likelihoods

A composite likelihood is a combination of low-dimensional likelihood objects useful in applications where the data have complex structure. Although composite likelihood construction is a crucial aspect influencing both computing and statistical properties of the resulting estimator, currently there does not seem to exist a universal rule to combine low-dimensional likelihood objects that is statistically justified and fast in execution. This paper develops a methodology to select and combine the most informative low-dimensional likelihoods from a large set of candidates while carrying out parameter estimation. The new procedure minimizes the distance between composite likelihood and full likelihood scores subject to a constraint representing the afforded computing cost. The selected composite likelihood is sparse in the sense that it contains a relatively small number of informative sub-likelihoods while the noisy terms are dropped. The resulting estimator is found to have asymptotic variance close to that of the minimum-variance estimator constructed using all the low-dimensional likelihoods.

Noise-Adaptive Quantum Compilation Strategies Evaluated with Application-Motivated Benchmarks

Quantum compilation is the problem of translating an input quantum circuit into the most efficient equivalent of itself, taking into account the characteristics of the device that will execute the computation. Compilation strategies are composed of sequential passes that perform placement, routing and optimization tasks. Noise-adaptive compilers do take the noise statistics of the device into account, for some or all passes. The noise statics can be obtained from calibration data, and updated after each device calibration. In this paper, we propose a novel noise-adaptive compilation strategy that is computationally efficient. The proposed strategy assumes that the quantum device coupling map uses a heavy-hexagon lattice. Moreover, we present the application-motivated benchmarking of the proposed noise-adaptive compilation strategy, compared with some of the most advanced state-of-art approaches. The presented results seem to indicate that our compilation strategy is particularly effective for deep circuits and for square circuits.

Efficient and Effective Quantum Compiling for Entanglement-based Machine Learning on IBM Q Devices

Quantum compiling means fast, device-aware implementation of quantum algorithms (i.e., quantum circuits, in the quantum circuit model of computation). In this paper, we present a strategy for compiling IBM Q -aware, low-depth quantum circuits that generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states. The resulting compiler can replace the QISKit compiler for the specific purpose of obtaining improved GHZ circuits. It is well known that GHZ states have several practical applications, including quantum machine learning. We illustrate our experience in implementing and querying a uniform quantum example oracle based on the GHZ circuit, for solving the classically hard problem of learning parity with noise.

Parsimonious and powerful composite likelihood testing for group difference and genotype-phenotype association

Testing the association between a phenotype and many genetic variants from case-control data is essential in genome-wide association study (GWAS). This is a challenging task as many such variants are correlated or non-informative. Similarities exist in testing the population difference between two groups of high dimensional data with intractable full likelihood function. Testing may be tackled by a maximum composite likelihood (MCL) not entailing the full likelihood, but current MCL tests are subject to power loss for involving non-informative or redundant sub-likelihoods. In this paper, we develop a forward search and test method for simultaneous powerful group difference testing and informative sub-likelihoods composition. Our method constructs a sequence of Wald-type test statistics by including only informative sub-likelihoods progressively so as to improve the test power under local sparsity alternatives. Numerical studies show that it achieves considerable improvement over the available tests as the modeling complexity grows. Our method is further validated by testing the motivating GWAS data on breast cancer with interesting results obtained.

Reliable inference for complex models by discriminative composite likelihood estimation

Composite likelihood estimation has an important role in the analysis of multivariate data for which the full likelihood function is intractable. An important issue in composite likelihood inference is the choice of the weights associated with lower-dimensional data sub-sets, since the presence of incompatible sub-models can deteriorate the accuracy of the resulting estimator. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for simultaneous parameter estimation by tilting, or re-weighting, each sub-likelihood component called discriminative composite likelihood estimation (D-McLE). The data-adaptive weights maximize the composite likelihood function, subject to moving a given distance from uniform weights; then, the resulting weights can be used to rank lower-dimensional likelihoods in terms of their influence in the composite likelihood function. Our analytical findings and numerical examples support the stability of the resulting estimator compared to estimators constructed using standard composition strategies based on uniform weights. The properties of the new method are illustrated through simulated data and real spatial data on multivariate precipitation extremes.

Maximum L$q$-likelihood estimation

In this paper, the maximum L$q$-likelihood estimator (ML$q$E), a new parameter estimator based on nonextensive entropy [Kibernetika 3 (1967) 30--35] is introduced. The properties of the ML$q$E are studied via asymptotic analysis and computer simulations. The behavior of the ML$q$E is characterized by the degree of distortion $q$ applied to the assumed model. When $q$ is properly chosen for small and moderate sample sizes, the ML$q$E can successfully trade bias for precision, resulting in a substantial reduction of the mean squared error. When the sample size is large and $q$ tends to 1, a necessary and sufficient condition to ensure a proper asymptotic normality and efficiency of ML$q$E is established.
