$C^1$-regularity for degenerate diffusion equations

We prove that any solution of a degenerate elliptic PDE is of class $C^1$, provided the inverse of the equation's degeneracy law satisfies an integrability criterium, viz. $σ^{-1} \in L^1\left (\frac{1}λ {\bf d}λ\right )$. The proof is based upon the construction of a sequence of converging tangent hyperplanes that approximate $u(x)$, near $x_0$, by an error of order $\text{o}(|x-x_0|)$. Explicit control of such hyperplanes is carried over through the construction, yielding universal estimates upon the ${C}^1$--regularity of solutions. Among the main new ingredients required in the proof, we develop an alternative recursive algorithm for the renormalization of approximating solutions. This new method is based on a technique tailored to prevent the sequence of degeneracy laws constructed through the process from being, itself, degenerate.

Nonlinear variants of a theorem of Kwapień

A famous result of S. Kwapień asserts that a linear operator from a Banach space to a Hilbert space is absolutely $1$-summing whenever its adjoint is absolutely $q$-summing for some $1\leq q<\infty$; this result was recently extended to Lipschitz operators by Chen and Zheng. In the present paper we show that Kwapień's and Chen--Zheng theorems hold in a very relaxed nonlinear environment, under weaker hypotheses. Even when restricted to the original linear case, our result generalizes Kwapień's theorem because it holds when the adjoint is just almost summing. In addition, a variant for $\mathcal{L}_{p}$-spaces, with $p\geq2$, instead of Hilbert spaces is provided.

On the Number of Gradings on Matrix Algebras

We determine the number of isomorphism classes of elementary gradings by a finite group on an algebra of upper block-triangular matrices. As a consequence we prove that, for a finite abelian group $G$, the sequence of the numbers $E(G,m)$ of isomorphism classes of elementary $G$-gradings on the algebra $M_{m}(\mathbb{F})$ of $m\times m$ matrices with entries in a field $\mathbb{F}$ characterizes $G$. A formula for the number of isomorphism classes of gradings by a finite abelian group on an algebra of upper block-triangular matrices over an algebraically closed field, with mild restrictions on its characteristic, is also provided. Finally, if $G$ is a finite abelian group, $\mathbb{F}$ is an algebraically closed field and $N(G,m)$ is the number of isomorphism classes of $G$-gradings on $M_{m}% (\mathbb{F})$ we prove that $N(G,m)\sim\frac{1}{\left\vert G\right\vert !}m^{\left\vert G\right\vert -1}\sim E(G,m)$.

On unimodular multilinear forms with small norms on sequence spaces

The Kahane--Salem--Zygmund inequality is a probabilistic result that guarantees the existence of special matrices with entries $1$ and $-1$ generating unimodular $m$-linear forms $A_{m,n}:\ell_{p_{1}}^{n}\times \cdots\times\ell_{p_{m}}^{n}\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}$ (or $\mathbb{C}$) with relatively small norms. The optimal asymptotic estimates for the smallest possible norms of $A_{m,n}$ when $\left\{ p_{1},...,p_{m}\right\} \subset\lbrack2,\infty]$ and when $\left\{ p_{1},...,p_{m}\right\} \subset\lbrack1,2)$ are well-known and in this paper we obtain the optimal asymptotic estimates for the remaining case: $\left\{ p_{1},...,p_{m}\right\} $ intercepts both $[2,\infty]$ and $[1,2)$. In particular we prove that a conjecture posed by Albuquerque and Rezende is false and, using a special type of matrices that dates back to the works of Toeplitz, we also answer a problem posed by the same authors.

Geometry of the closed unit ball of the space of bilinear forms on $\ell_{\infty}^{2}$

We obtain all extreme and exposed points of the closed unit ball of the space of bilinear forms $T:\ell_{\infty}^{2}\times\ell_{\infty}^{2}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}.$ We also show that any (norm one) bilinear form $T:\ell_{\infty }^{2}\times\ell_{\infty}^{2}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ for which the optimal constant of the Littlewood's $4/3$ inequality is achieved is necessarily an extreme point. In the case of complex scalars we combine analytical and numerical evidences supporting that, at least for complex bilinear forms with real coefficients, the optimal constant of Littlewood's $4/3$ inequality seems to the the trivial, i.e., $1.$

Optimal constants for a mixed Littlewood type inequality

For $p\in\lbrack2,\infty]$ a mixed Littlewood-type inequality asserts that there is a constant $C_{(m),p}\geq1$ such that \[ \left( \sum_{i_{1}=1}^{\infty}\left( \sum_{i_{2},...,i_{m}=1}^{\infty }|T(e_{i_{1}},...,e_{i_{m}})|^{2}\right) ^{\frac{1}{2}\frac{p}{p-1}}\right) ^{\frac{p-1}{p}}\leq C_{(m),p}\Vert T\Vert \] for all continuous real-valued $m$-linear forms on $\ell_{p}\times c_{0} \times\dots\times c_{0}$ (when $p=\infty$, $\ell_{p}$ is replaced by $c_{0})$. We prove that for $p>2.18006$ the optimal constants $C_{(m),p}$ are $\left( 2^{\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{p}}\right) ^{m-1}.$ When $p=\infty,$ we recover the best constants of the mixed $\left( \ell_{1},\ell_{2}\right) $-Littlewood inequality.

Regularity principle in sequence spaces and applications

We prove a nonlinear regularity principle in sequence spaces which produces universal estimates for special series defined therein. Some consequences are obtained and, in particular, we establish new inclusion theorems for multiple summing operators. Of independent interest, we settle all Grothendieck's type $(\ell_{1},\ell_{2})$ theorems for multilinear operators. We further employ the new regularity principle to solve the classification problem concerning all pairs of admissible exponents in the anisotropic Hardy--Littlewood inequality.

Some inclusion results for interpolated summing operator ideals and integrability improvement of vector valued functions

Consider a Banach space valued measurable function $f$ and an operator $u$ from the space where {$f$} takes values. If $f $ is Pettis integrable, a classical result due to J. Diestel shows that composing it with $u$ gives a Bochner integrable function $u \circ f$ whenever $u$ is absolutely summing. In a previous work we have shown that a well-known interpolation technique for operator ideals allows to prove under some requirements that a composition of a $p$-Pettis integrable function with a $q$-summing operator provides an $r$-Bochner integrable function. In this paper a new abstract inclusion theorem for classes of {abstract} summing operators is shown and applied to the class of interpolated operator ideals. Together with the results of the {aforementioned} paper, it provides more results on the relation about the integrability of the function $u \circ f$ and the summability properties of $u$.

A nontrivial closed formula for the lower bounds for the constants of the real Hardy-Littlewood inequalities

This note has a twofold purpose. To improve the best known lower estimates of the Hardy-Littlewood inequality for $m$-linear forms in $\ell_{p}$ spaces and to provide a closed formula encompassing the cases $p>2m$ and $% p=2m.$ Our approach is quite simpler than the previous and uses the best known constants of the Clarkson's inequalities.

A short communication on the constants of the multilinear Hardy--Littlewood inequality

It was recently proved that for $p>2m^{3}-4m^{2}+2m$ the constants of the Hardy--Littlewood inequality for $m$-linear forms on $\ell_{p}$-spaces are less than or equal to the best known estimates of respective constants of the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality. In this note we obtain upper bounds for opposite side, i.e., the constants when $2m\leq p\leq2m^{3}-4m^{2}+2m.$ For these values of $p$ our result improves previous estimates from 2014 of Araujo \textit{et al}. for all $m\geq3.$

Improving integrability via absolute summability: a general version of Diestel's Theorem

A classical result by J. Diestel establishes that the composition of a summing operator with a (strongly measurable) Pettis integrable function gives a Bochner integrable function. In this paper we show that a much more general result is possible regarding the improvement of the integrability of vector valued functions by the summability of the operator. After proving a general result, we center our attention in the particular case given by the $(p,σ)$-absolutely continuous operators, that allows to prove a lot of special results on integration improvement for selected cases of classical Banach spaces ---including $C(K)$, $L^p$ and Hilbert spaces--- and operators ---$p$-summing, $(q,p)$-summing and $p$-approximable operators---.

On the size of certain subsets of invariant Banach sequence spaces

The essence of the notion of lineability and spaceability is to find linear structures in somewhat chaotic environments. The existing methods, in general, use \textit{ad hoc} arguments and few general techniques are known. Motivated by the search of general methods, in this paper we formally extend recent results of G.\ Botelho and V.V. Fávaro on invariant sequence spaces to a more general setting. Our main results show that some subsets of invariant sequence spaces contain, up to the null vector, a closed infinite-dimensional subspace.

Optimal estimates for summing multilinear operators

We show that given a positive integer $m$, a real number $p\in\left[ 2,\infty\right)$ and $1\leq s<p^{\ast}$ the set of non--multiple $\left( r;s\right)$--summing $m$--linear forms on $\ell_{p}\times\cdots\times \ell_{p}$ contains, except for the null vector, a closed subspace of maximal dimension whenever $r<\frac{2ms}{s+2m-ms}$. This result is optimal since for $r\geq\frac{2ms}{s+2m-ms}$ all $m$--linear forms on $\ell_{p}\times \cdots\times\ell_{p}$ are multiple $\left( r;s\right)$--summing. In particular, among other results, we generalize a result related to cotype (from 2010) due to Botelho \textit{et al.}

Optimal Hardy-Littlewood type inequalities for $m$-linear forms on $\ell_{p}$ spaces with $1\leq p\leq m$

The Hardy-Littlewood inequalities for $m$-linear forms on $\ell_{p}$ spaces are stated for $p>m$. In this paper, among other results, we investigate similar results for $1\leq p\leq m.$ Let $\mathbb{K}$ be $% \mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ and $m\geq 2$ be a positive integer. Our main results are the following sharp inequalities: (i) If $\left(r,p\right) \in \left(\lbrack 1,2]\times \lbrack 2,2m)\right) \cup \left(\lbrack 1,\infty)\times \lbrack 2m,\infty \right)) $, then there is a constant $D_{m,r,p}^{\mathbb{K}}>0$ (not depending on $% n $) such that \begin{equation*} \textstyle\left(\sum\limits_{j_{1},...,j_{m}=1}^{n}\left\vert T(e_{j_{1}},...,e_{j_{m}})\right\vert ^{r}\right) ^{\frac{1}{r}}\leq D_{m,r,p}^{\mathbb{K}}n^{\max \left\{ \frac{2mr+2mp-mpr-pr}{2pr},0\right\} }\left\Vert T\right\Vert \end{equation*} for all $m$--linear forms $T:\ell_{p}^{n}\times \cdots \times \ell_{p}^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{K}$ and all positive integers $n$. (ii) If $\left(r,p\right) \in \lbrack 2,\infty)\times (m,2m]$, then \begin{equation*} \textstyle\left(\sum\limits_{j_{1},...,j_{m}=1}^{n}\left\vert T(e_{j_{1}},...,e_{j_{m}})\right\vert ^{r}\right) ^{\frac{1}{r}}\leq \left(\sqrt{2}\right) ^{m-1}n^{\max \left\{ \frac{p+mr-rp}{pr},0\right\} }\left\Vert T\right\Vert \end{equation*} for all $m$--linear forms $T:\ell_{p}^{n}\times \cdots \times \ell_{p}^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{K}$ and all positive integers $n.$ Moreover the exponents $\max \{ (2mr+2mp-mpr-pr)/2pr,0 \} $ in (i) and $\max \{(p+mr-rp)/pr,0 \} $ in (ii) are optimal.

The optimal constants of the mixed $\left( \ell_{1},\ell _{2}\right) $-Littlewood inequality

In this note, among other results, we find the optimal constants of the generalized Bohnenblust--Hille inequality for $m$-linear forms over $\mathbb{R}$ and with multiple exponents $\left( 1,2,...,2\right) $, sometimes called mixed $\left( \ell _{1},\ell _{2}\right) $-Littlewood inequality. We show that these optimal constants are precisely $\left( \sqrt{2}\right) ^{m-1}$ and this is somewhat surprising since a series of recent papers have shown that similar constants have a sublinear growth. This result answers a question raised by Albuquerque \textit{et al.} in a paper published in 2014 in the \textit{Journal of Functional Analysis}.

Coincidence results for summing multilinear mappings

In this paper we prove coincidence results concerning spaces of absolutely summing multilinear mappings between Banach spaces. The nature of these results arises from two distinct approaches: the coincidence of two \textit{a priori} different classes of summing multilinear mappings and the summability of all multilinear mappings defined on products of Banach spaces. Optimal generalizations of known results are obtained. We also introduce and explore new techniques in the field, for example a technique to extend coincidence results for linear, bilinear and even trilinear mappings to general multilinear ones.

In a final section we investigate the size of the set of non uniformly dominated sets of linear operators under the point of view of lineability.

Lower bounds for the complex polynomial Hardy--Littlewood inequality

The Hardy--Littlewood inequality for complex homogeneous polynomials asserts that given positive integers $m\geq2$ and $n\geq1$, if $P$ is a complex homogeneous polynomial of degree $m$ on $\ell_{p}^{n}$ with $2m\leq p\leq\infty$ given by $P(x_{1},\ldots,x_{n})=\sum_{|α|=m}a_{α}\mathbf{{x}^α}$, then there exists a constant $C_{\mathbb{C},m,p}^{\mathrm{pol}}\geq1$ (which is does not depend on $n$) such that \[ \left( {\sum\limits_{\left\vert α\right\vert =m}}\left\vert a_{α}\right\vert ^{\frac{2mp}{mp+p-2m}}\right) ^{\frac{mp+p-2m}{2mp}}\leq C_{\mathbb{C},m,p}^{\mathrm{pol}}\left\Vert P\right\Vert , \] with $\Vert P\Vert:=\sup_{z\in B_{\ell_{p}^{n}}}|P(z)|$. In this short note, among other results, we provide nontrivial lower bounds for the constants $C_{\mathbb{C},m,p}^{\mathrm{pol}}$. For instance we prove that, for $m\geq2$ and $2m\leq p<\infty$, \[ C_{\mathbb{C},m,p}^{\mathrm{pol}}\geq2^{\frac{m}{p}}% \] for $m$ even, and \[ C_{\mathbb{C},m,p}^{\mathrm{pol}}\geq2^{\frac{m-1}{p}}% \] for $m$ odd. Estimates for the case $p=\infty$ (this is the particular case of the complex polynomial Bohnenblust--Hille inequality) were recently obtained by D. Nuñez-Alarcón in 2013.

Lower bounds for the constants of the Hardy-Littlewood inequalities

Given an integer $m\geq2$, the Hardy--Littlewood inequality (for real scalars) says that for all $2m\leq p\leq\infty$, there exists a constant $C_{m,p}% ^{\mathbb{R}}\geq1$ such that, for all continuous $m$--linear forms $A:\ell_{p}^{N}\times\cdots\times\ell_{p}^{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ and all positive integers $N$, \[ \left( \sum_{j_{1},...,j_{m}=1}^{N}\left\vert A(e_{j_{1}},...,e_{j_{m}% })\right\vert ^{\frac{2mp}{mp+p-2m}}\right) ^{\frac{mp+p-2m}{2mp}}\leq C_{m,p}^{\mathbb{R}}\left\Vert A\right\Vert . \] The limiting case $p=\infty$ is the well-known Bohnenblust--Hille inequality; the behavior of the constants $C_{m,p}^{\mathbb{R}}$ is an open problem. In this note we provide nontrivial lower bounds for these constants.

On the constants of the Bohnenblust-Hille inequality and Hardy--Littlewood inequalities

In this paper, among other results, we improve the best known estimates for the constants of the generalized Bohnenblust-Hille inequality. These enhancements are then used to improve the best known constants of the Hardy--Littlewood inequality; this inequality asserts that for a positive integer $m\geq2$ with $2m\leq p\leq\infty$ and $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ there exists a constant $C_{m,p}^{\mathbb{K}}\geq1$ such that, for all continuous $m$--linear forms $T:\ell_{p}^{n}\times\cdots\times\ell_{p}^{n}\rightarrow\mathbb{K}$, and all positive integers $n$,% \[ \left( \sum_{j_{1},...,j_{m}=1}^{n}\left\vert T(e_{j_{1}},...,e_{j_{m}% })\right\vert ^{\frac{2mp}{mp+p-2m}}\right) ^{\frac{mp+p-2m}{2mp}}\leq C_{m,p}^{\mathbb{K}}\left\Vert T\right\Vert , \] and the exponent $\frac{2mp}{mp+p-2m}$ is sharp. In particular, we show that for $p > 2m^{3}-4m^{2}+2m$ the optimal constants satisfying the above inequality are dominated by the best known estimates for the constants of the $m$-linear Bohnenblust--Hille inequality. More precisely if $γ$ denotes the Euler--Mascheroni constant, considering the case of complex scalars as an illustration, we show that% \[ C_{m,p}^{\mathbb{C}}\leq\prod\limits_{j=2}^{m}Γ\left( 2-\frac{1}% {j}\right) ^{\frac{j}{2-2j}}<m^{\frac{1-γ}{2}}, \] which is somewhat surprising since this new formula has no dependence on $p$ (the former estimate depends on $p$ but, paradoxally, is worse than this new one). This suggests the following open problems: 1) Are the optimal constants of the Hardy--Littlewood inequality and Bohnenblust--Hille inequalities the same? 2) Are the optimal constants of the Hardy--Littlewood inequality independent of $p$ (at least for large $p$)?

Optimal Hardy-Littlewood type inequalities for polynomials and multilinear operators

In this paper we obtain quite general and definitive forms for Hardy-Littlewood type inequalities. Moreover, when restricted to the original particular cases, our approach provides much simpler and straightforward proofs and we are able to show that in most cases the exponents involved are optimal. The technique we used is a combination of probabilistic tools and of an interpolative approach; this former technique is also employed in this paper to improve the constants for vector-valued Bohnenblust--Hille type inequalities.

A note on the hypercontractivity of the polynomial Bohnenblust--Hille inequality

For $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ and $m$ a positive integer, we remark that there is a constant $C$ so that, for all $r\in\lbrack1,\frac {2m}{m+1}],$ the supremum of the ratio between the $\ell_{r}$ norm of the coefficients of any nonzero $m$-homogeneous polynomial $P:\ell_{\infty}% ^{n}(\mathbb{K}) \rightarrow\mathbb{K}$ and its supremum norm is dominated by $C^{m}\cdot n^{(\frac{m}{r}-\frac{m+1}{2})}$ and, moreover, we prove that the exponent $\frac{m}{r}-\frac{m+1}{2}$ is optimal.

Grothendieck's theorem for absolutely summing multilinear operators is optimal

Grothendieck's theorem asserts that every continuous linear operator from $\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolutely $\left( 1;1\right) $-summing. In this note we prove that the optimal constant $g_{m}$ so that every continuous $m$-linear operator from $\ell_{1}\times\cdots\times\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolutely $\left( g_{m};1\right) $-summing is $\frac{2}{m+1}$. We also show that if $g_{m}<\frac{2}{m+1}$ there is $\mathfrak{c}$ dimensional linear space composed by continuous non absolutely $\left( g_{m};1\right) $-summing $m$-linear operators from $\ell_{1}\times\cdots\times\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}.$ In particular, our result solves (in the positive) a conjecture posed by A.T. Bernardino in 2011.

Lineability, spaceability, and additivity cardinals for Darboux-like functions

Weak compactness and strongly summing multilinear operators

Every absolutely summing linear operator is weakly compact. However, for strongly summing multilinear operators and polynomials - one of the most natural extensions of the linear case to the non linear framework - weak compactness does not hold in general. We show that a subclass of the class of strongly summing multilinear operators/polynomials, sharing its main properties such as Grothendieck's Theorem, Pietsch Domination Theorem and Dvoretzky-Rogers Theorem, has even better properties like weak compactness and a natural factorization theorem.

On multi-ideals and polynomial ideals of Banach spaces: a new approach to coherence and compatibility

What is an adequate extension of an operator ideal I to the polynomial and multilinear settings? This question motivated the appearance of the concepts of coherent sequences of polynomial ideals and compatibility of a polynomial ideal with an operator ideal, introduced by D. Carando el al. We propose a different approach by considering pairs (U_{k},M_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty}, where (U_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty} is a polynomial ideal and (M_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty} is a multi-ideal, instead of considering just polynomial ideals. Our approach ends a discomfort caused by the previous theory: for real scalars the canonical sequence (P_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty} of continuous k-homogeneous polynomials is not coherent according to the definition of Carando et al.

As an application we fill the gap in the proofs of some results of concerning Pietsch-type factorization of dominated polynomials.

On the growth of the optimal constants of the multilinear Bohnenblust--Hille inequality

Let $(K_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty}$ be the optimal constants satisfying the multilinear (real or complex) Bohnenblust--Hille inequality. The exact values of the constants $K_{n}$ are still waiting to be discovered since eighty years ago; recently, it was proved that $(K_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty}$ has a subexponential growth. In this note we go a step further and address the following question: Is it true that \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}(K_{n}-K_{n-1}) =0? \] Our main result is a Dichotomy Theorem for the constants satisfying the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality; in particular we show that the answer to the above problem is essentially positive in a sense that will be clear along the note. Another consequence of the dichotomy proved in this note is that $(K_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty}$ has a kind of subpolynomial growth: if $p(n)$ is any non-constant polynomial, then $K_{n}$ \textit{is} \textit{not} asymptotically equal to $p(n).$ Moreover, if \[ q>\log_{2}(\frac{e^{1-1/2γ}}{\sqrt{2}}) \approx0.526, \] then \[ K_{n}\nsim n^{q}. \]

There exist multilinear Bohnenblust-Hille constants $(C_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty}$ with $\displaystyle \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}(C_{n+1}-C_{n}) =0.$

The $n$-linear Bohnenblust-Hille inequality asserts that there is a constant $C_{n}\in\lbrack1,\infty)$ such that the $\ell_{\frac{2n}{n+1}}$-norm of $(U(e_{i_{^{1}}},...,e_{i_{n}}))_{i_{1},...i_{n}=1}^{N}$is bounded above by $C_{n}$ times the supremum norm of $U,$ regardless of the $n$-linear form $U:\mathbb{C}^{N}\times...\times\mathbb{C}^{N}% \rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ and the positive integer $N$ (the same holds for real scalars). The power $2n/(n+1)$ is sharp but the values and asymptotic behavior of the optimal constants remain a mystery. The first estimates for these constants had exponential growth. Very recently, a new panorama emerged and the importance, for many applications, of the knowledge of the optimal constants (denoted by $(K_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty}$) was stressed. The title of this paper is part of our Fundamental Lemma, one of the novelties presented here. It brings surprising new (and precise) information on the optimal constants (for both real and complex scalars). For instance, [K_{n+1}-K_{n}<\frac{0.87}{n^{0.473}}] for infinitely many $n$'s. In the case of complex scalars we present a curious formula, where $π,e$ and the famous Euler--Mascheroni constant $γ$ appear together: [K_{n}<1+(\frac{4}{\sqrtπ}(1-e^{γ/2-1/2}) {\sum\limits_{j=1}^{n-1}}j^{^{\log_{2}(e^{-γ/2+1/2}) -1}%})] for all $n\geq2$. Numerically, the above formula shows a surprising low growth, [K_{n}<1.41(n-1)^{0.305}-0.04] for every integer $n \geq2$. We also provide a brief discussion on the interplay between the Kahane-Salem-Zygmund and the Bohnenblust-Hille (polynomial and multilinear) inequalities.

Absolutely summing operators revisited: new directions in the nonlinear theory

In the last decades many authors have become interested in the study of multilinear and polynomial generalizations of families of operator ideals (such as, for instance, the ideal of absolutely summing operators). However, these generalizations must keep the essence of the given operator ideal and there seems not to be a universal method to achieve this. The main task of this paper is to discuss, study, and introduce multilinear and polynomial extensions of the aforementioned operator ideals taking into account the already existing methods of evaluating the adequacy of such generalizations. Besides this subject's intrinsic mathematical interest, the main motivation is our belief (based on facts that shall be presented) that some of the already existing approaches are not adequate.

Bounded and unbounded polynomials and multilinear forms: Characterizing continuity

In this paper we prove a characterization of continuity for polynomials on a normed space. Namely, we prove that a polynomial is continuous if and only if it maps compact sets into compact sets. We also provide a partial answer to the question as to whether a polynomial is continuous if and only if it transforms connected sets into connected sets. These results motivate the natural question as to how many non-continuous polynomials there are on an infinite dimensional normed space. A problem on the \emph{lineability} of the sets of non-continuous polynomials and multilinear mappings on infinite dimensional normed spaces is answered.

Lineability and spaceability for the weak form of Peano's theorem and vector-valued sequence spaces

Two new applications of a technique for spaceability are given in this paper. For the first time this technique is used in the investigation of the algebraic genericity property of the weak form of Peano's theorem on the existence of solutions of the ODE $u'=f(u)$ on $c_0$. The space of all continuous vector fields $f$ on $c_0$ is proved to contain a closed $\mathfrak{c}$-dimensional subspace formed by fields $f$ for which -- except for the null field -- the weak form of Peano's theorem fails to be true. The second application generalizes known results on the existence of closed $\mathfrak{c}$-dimensional subspaces inside certain subsets of $\ell_p(X)$-spaces, $0 < p < \infty$, to the existence of closed subspaces of maximal dimension inside such subsets.

Lower bounds for the constants in the Bohnenblust-Hille inequality: the case of real scalars

The Bohnenblust-Hille inequality was obtained in 1931 and (in the case of real scalars) asserts that for every positive integer $N$ and every $m$-linear mapping $T:\ell_{\infty}^{N}\times...\times\ell_{\infty}^{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ one has (\sum\limits_{i_{1},...,i_{m}=1}^{N}|T(e_{i_{^{1}}},...,e_{i_{m}})|^{\frac{2m}{m+1}})^{\frac{m+1}{2m}}\leq C_{m}\VertT\Vert, for some positive constant $C_{m}$. Since then, several authors obtained upper estimates for the values of $C_{m}$. However, the novelty presented in this short note is that we provide lower (and non-trivial) bounds for $C_{m}$.

New upper bounds for the constants in the Bohnenblust-Hille inequality

A classical inequality due to Bohnenblust and Hille states that for every positive integer $m$ there is a constant $C_{m}>0$ so that $$(\sum\limits_{i_{1},...,i_{m}=1}^{N}|U(e_{i_{^{1}}},...,e_{i_{m}})| ^{\frac{2m}{m+1}}) ^{\frac{m+1}{2m}}\leq C_{m}| U|$$ for every positive integer $N$ and every $m$-linear mapping $U:\ell_{\infty}^{N}\times...\times\ell_{\infty}^{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$, where $C_{m}=m^{\frac{m+1}{2m}}2^{\frac{m-1}{2}}.$ The value of $C_{m}$ was improved to $C_{m}=2^{\frac{m-1}{2}}$ by S. Kaijser and more recently H. Quéffelec and A. Defant and P. Sevilla-Peris remarked that $C_{m}=(\frac{2}{\sqrtπ})^{m-1}$ also works. The Bohnenblust--Hille inequality also holds for real Banach spaces with the constants $C_{m}=2^{\frac{m-1}{2}}$. In this note we show that a recent new proof of the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality (due to Defant, Popa and Schwarting) provides, in fact, quite better estimates for $C_{m}$ for all values of $m \in \mathbb{N}$. In particular, we will also show that, for real scalars, if $m$ is even with $2\leq m\leq 24$, then $$C_{\mathbb{R},m}=2^{1/2}C_{\mathbb{R},m/2}.$$ We will mainly work on a paper by Defant, Popa and Schwarting, giving some remarks about their work and explaining how to, numerically, improve the previously mentioned constants.

The asymptotic growth of the constants in the Bohnenblust-Hille inequality is optimal

We provide (for both the real and complex settings) a family of constants, $% (C_{m})_{m\in \mathbb{N}}$, enjoying the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality and such that $\displaystyle\lim_{m\rightarrow \infty}\frac{C_{m}}{C_{m-1}}=1$, i.e., their asymptotic growth is the best possible. As a consequence, we also show that the optimal constants, $(K_{m})_{m\in \mathbb{N}}$, in the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality have the best possible asymptotic behavior. Besides its intrinsic mathematical interest and potential applications to different areas, the importance of this result also lies in the fact that all previous estimates and related results for the last 80 years (such as, for instance, the multilinear version of the famous Grothendieck Theorem for absolutely summing operators) always present constants $C_{m}$'s growing at an exponential rate of certain power of $m$.

On summability of nonlinear mappings: a new approach

The main goal of this paper is to characterize arbitrary nonlinear (non-multilinear) mappings $f:X_{1}\times...\times X_{n}\rightarrow Y$ between Banach spaces that satisfy a quite natural Pietsch Domination-type theorem around a given point $(a_{1},...,a_{n})\in$ $X_{1}\times...\times X_{n}$. As a consequence of our approach a notion of weighted summability arises naturally, which may be an interesting topic for further investigation.

Some improvements on the constants for the real Bohnenblust-Hille inequality

A classical inequality due to Bohnenblust and Hille states that for every $N \in \mathbb{N}$ and every $m$-linear mapping $U:\ell_{\infty}^{N}\times...\times\ell_{\infty}^{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ we have \[(\sum\limits_{i_{1},...,i_{m}=1}^{N}| U(e_{i_{^{1}}},...,e_{i_{m}})| ^{\frac{2m}{m+1}}) ^{\frac{m+1}{2m}}\leq C_{m}| U|] where $C_{m}=2^{\frac{m-1}{2}}$. The result is also true for real Banach spaces. In this note we show that an adequate use of a recent new proof of Bohnenblust-Hille inequality, due to Defant, Popa and Schwarting, combined with the optimal constants of Khinchine's inequality (due to Haagerup) provides quite better estimates for the constants involved in the real Bohnenblust-Hille inequality. For instance, for $2\leq m\leq 14,$ we show that the constants $C_{m}=2^\frac{m-1}{2}$ can be replaced by $2^{\frac{m^{2}+6m-8}{8m}}$ if $m$ is even and by $2^{\frac{m^{2}+6m-7}{8m}}$ if $m$ is odd, which substantially improve the known values of $C_{m}$. We also show that the new constants present a better asymptotic behavior.

Some techniques on nonlinear analysis and applications

In this paper we present two different results in the context of nonlinear analysis. The first one is essentially a nonlinear technique that, in view of its strong generality, may be useful in different practical problems. The second result, more technical, but also connected to the first one, is an extension of the well-known Pietsch Domination Theorem. The last decade witnessed the birth of different families of Pietsch Domination-type results and some attempts of unification. Our result, that we call "full general Pietsch Domination Theorem" is potentially a definitive Pietsch Domination Theorem which unifies the previous versions and delimits what can be proved in this line. The connections to the recent notion of weighted summability are traced.

Norm optimization problem for linear operators in classical Banach spaces

The main result of the paper shows that, for 1<p and 1<=q, a linear operator T from l_p to l_q attains its norm if, and only if, there exists a not weakly null maximizing sequence for T (counterexamples can be easily constructed when p=1). For 1<p (and q different from p), as a consequence of the previous result we show that any not weakly null maximizing sequence for a norm attaining operator T from l_p to l_q has a norm-convergent subsequence (and this result is sharp in the sense that it is not valid if p=q). We also investigate lineability of the sets of norm-attaining and non-norm attaining operators.

Absolutely summing linear operators into spaces with no finite cotype

Given an infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ and a Banach space $Y$ with no finite cotype, we determine whether or not every continuous linear operator from $X$ to $Y$ is absolutely $(q;p)$-summing for almost all choices of $p$ and $q$, including the case $p=q$. If $X$ assumes its cotype, the problem is solved for all choices of $p$ and $q$. Applications to the theory of dominated multilinear mappings are also provided.

Normal numbers from Steinhaus viewpoint

In this paper we recall a non-standard construction of the Borel sigma-algebra B in [0,1] and construct a family of measures (in particular, Lebesgue measure) in B by a completely non-topological method. This approach, that goes back to Steinhaus, in 1923, is now used to introduce natural generalizations of the concept of normal numbers and explore their intrinsic probabilistic properties. We show that, in virtually all the cases, almost all real number in [0,1] is normal (with respect to this generalized concept). This procedure highlights some apparently hidden but interesting features of the Borel sigma-algebra and Lebesgue measure in [0,1].
