Some of the many uses of scalar fields: kinks, lumps, and geometric constraints

This perspective deals with real scalar fields in two-dimensional spacetime. We focus on models described by one and two real scalar fields, paying closer attention to kinks and lumps, which are localized structures of current interest in high energy physics and in other areas of nonlinear science. We briefly review some of the main results presented in the literature and then focus on some new issues concerning the compact and long-range behavior of solutions and the presence of geometric constraints, suggesting how they can be used in applications in other areas of nonlinear science.

Average scattering entropy for periodic, aperiodic and random distribution of vertices in simple quantum graphs

This work deals with the average scattering entropy of quantum graphs. We explore this concept in several distinct scenarios that involve periodic, aperiodic and random distribution of vertices of distinct degrees. In particular, we compare distinct situations to see how they behave as we change the arrangements of vertices and the topology and geometry of the proposed structures. The results show that the average scattering entropy may depend on the number of vertices, and on the topological and geometrical disposition of vertices and edges of the quantum graph. In this sense, it can be seen as another tool to be used to explore geometric and topological effects of current interest for quantum systems.

Bifurcation and chaos in one dimensional chains of small particles

This work deals with bifurcation and the chaotic behavior in one dimensional chains of small particles. We consider two distinct possibilities, one where the particles are modeled by a fourth-order potential which was already studied. We revisit this system and bring novelties concerning the presence of the three-armed star behavior and the study of the corresponding Lyapunov exponent. The other system is new, and there the particles are more involved and modeled by an eighth-order potential. We investigate this new system within the same approach, emphasizing the behavior of the orbits, the bifurcation profile and the corresponding Lyapunov exponent.

Effects of Cuscuton dynamics on braneworld configurations in the scalar-tensor representation of $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity

In this work we study braneworld configurations in the scalar-tensor representation of the $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity theory in the presence of a Cuscuton term in the source field matter Lagrangian. We start by deriving the scalar-tensor representation of the theory and obtaining its respective equations of motion. We then introduce the standard metric for a flat braneworld model with one extra dimension for the general case of a $f\left(R,T\right)$ theory and study two different models for the source field. Given the complexity of the field equations, these solutions are obtained numerically. In these cases, the Cuscuton term effectively amplifies the effect, by increasing the height of the stability potential barrier and, consequently, the depth of the minimum of the graviton zero-mode on the brane. Finally, we study the particular cases of $F(R)+T$ and $R+G\left(T\right)$, for which only the scalar fields $φ$ or $ψ$ are present, respectively, and we prove that the presence of the scalar field $φ$ is essential in the development of internal structure on the brane.

Generalized Maxwell-Higgs vortices in models with enhanced symmetry

Topological vortices in relativistic gauge theories in flat three-dimensional spacetime are investigated. We consider the symmetry $\rm{U(1)}\times...\times \rm{U(1)}$, and for each $\rm{U(1)}$ subgroup, a complex scalar field transforming under its action is introduced, as well as generalized permeabilities through which the subsystems are coupled. We investigate in detail the features of static, finite energy solutions within this class of generalized Maxwell-Higgs models, and study the effect of the winding numbers in the magnetic properties of each subsystem. A BPS bound and the related first order equations are introduced for a large class of models. Finally, we present some specific models and solve their equations of motion to find solutions engendering many distinct features in relation to each other and to the standard Nielsen-Olesen vortex.

Impact of compactlike and asymmetric configurations of thick branes on the scalar-tensor representation of $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity

In this work we study braneworld models in generalized $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity theories where the action depends on a function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the trace of the stress-energy tensor $T$. We explore the so-called scalar-tensor representation of the theory, where the dependence on $R$ and $T$ are exchanged for two auxiliary real scalar fields. We introduce a first-order formalism to relate the auxiliary fields with the source field of brane and analyze four distinct possibilities of current interest regarding compactification and asymmetry of the brane. We investigate the behavior of the auxiliary fields and their stability in each one of the four cases. For the models where the solution of the source field engenders compact behavior, the auxiliary fields exhibit a hybrid structure, behaving differently inside and outside the compact region described by the source configuration. In particular, we found that the solutions of the auxiliary fields are significantly modified in models where the geometry is strongly influenced by the source field. Moreover, for the model capable of engendering asymmetric features, the two auxiliary fields also respond to modifications on the parameter that controls the asymmetry of the system.

Mechanism to control the internal structure of thick brane

In this work we study braneworlds generated by several scalar fields. The investigation describes the necessary formalism to examine models and evaluate the conditions for the stability of the gravitational sector under linear perturbations. In particular, we develop a mechanism that help us investigate distinct situations controlled by two and by three fields, focusing on how the fields can be used to modify the internal structure of the brane.

Models of modified $F(R,T)$ and cuscuton braneworld

This work deals with braneworld models in the presence of scalar fields in a five-dimensional warped geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent. We consider generalized models in the presence of the Ricci scalar, the trace of the stress-energy tensor and the cuscuton contribution. The models describe novel braneworld scenarios and the investigations consider distinct possibilities, from which we show how the brane may change to become thinner, although keeping gravitational stability and the gravity zero mode under strict control. Moreover, we did not identify any split behavior in the warp factor in the presence of the cuscuton and the trace of the stress-energy tensor.

Multi-kink braneworld configurations in the scalar-tensor representation of $f(R,T)$ gravity

In this work we investigate the $f(R,T)$ brane in the scalar-tensor representation, where the solutions of the equations of motions for the source field engender topological defects with two-kink profiles. We use the first-order formalism to obtain analytical solutions for the source field of the brane and analyze how these solutions modify the structure of the auxiliary fields arising from the scalar-tensor representation of the theory. We found that when the model engenders two-kink solutions, the auxiliary fields are modified in order to allow for the appearance of an internal structure. In addition, the stability potential and zero mode also have their internal structure modified by two-kink solution.

New Results For Cuscuton Multi-Field Brane

We investigate braneworld models in the presence of the several scalar fields with generalized dynamics. A new mechanism to control the internal structure of brane in modified gravity is used to induce changes in the models in the presence of cuscuton dynamics. Examples with two- and three-field are considered, and we have found that the inclusion of the cuscuton can significantly alter the profile of the brane, causing unique changes in the warp factor, energy density, stability potential and the corresponding zero mode.

Impurity-like solutions in vortex systems coupled to a neutral field

In this work, a Maxwell-Higgs system is coupled to a neutral scalar field that engenders $Z_2$ symmetry. At critical coupling, the resulting field equations may be identified with those of a Maxwell-Higgs model doped with an impurity whose form changes according to properties of the neutral scalar field, such as the topological sector and position of its zeros. This allows for an interpretation of parameters appearing in impurity models in terms of properties of the kink-like defect, and provides a convenient way to understand and generate impurities. By solving the first order equations, we found vortices with a novel internal structure in relation to standard solutions. The procedure was also adapted to generate impurities for Chern-Simons-Higgs theory.

Maxwell-scalar device based on the electric dipole

In this work we study the electric field of a dipole immersed in a medium with permittivity controlled by a real scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to the Maxwell field. We model the system with an interesting function, which allows the presence of exact solutions, describing the possibility of the permittivity to encapsulate the charges at very high values, giving rise to an effect that is not present in the standard situation. The results are of direct interest to applications for emission and absorption of radiation, and may motivate new studies concerning binary stars and black holes in gravity scenarios of current interest.

Electrically charged localized structures

This work deals with an Abelian gauge field in the presence of an electric charge immersed in a medium controlled by neutral scalar fields, which interact with the gauge field through a generalized dielectric function. We develop an interesting procedure to solve the equations of motion, which is based on the minimization of the energy, leading us to a first order framework where minimum energy solutions of first order differential equations solve the equations of motion. We investigate two distinct models in two and three spatial dimensions and illustrate the general results with some examples of current interest, implementing a simple way to solve the problem with analytical solutions that engender internal structure.

Fermions in the presence of topological structures under geometric constrictions

In this work we study modifications of the spectrum of fermions interacting with kinklike structures in two-dimensional spacetime. We consider the Yukawa coupling between fermions and scalar fields that engender nontrivial internal structure and investigate how the fermion spectra change in terms of the parameters that control the kinklike configuration and the Yukawa coupling. We consider models that allow the internal structure of the kinklike solution to respond to the presence of a geometrical constriction, and show the fermion spectra may also appear directly affected by the constriction. The main results are of current interest and may be used to propose the construction of electronic devices capable of engendering new effects at the nanometric scale.

First order formalism for thick branes in modified gravity with Lagrange multiplier

This work discuss the construction of braneworld solutions in modified gravity with Lagrange multipliers. We examine the general aspects of the model and present a first order formalism that help us to find analytic solutions of the equations of motion. We also investigate some explicit models, analyse linear stability of the metric and comment on how to relate models investigated in other works to the ones examined in the present study.

Geometrically Constrained Kinklike Configurations

In this work we study kinklike structures, which are localized solutions that appear in models described by real scalar fields. The model to be considered is characterized by two real scalar fields and includes a function of one of the two fields that modifies the kinematics associated to the other field. The investigation brings to light a first order framework that minimizes the energy of the solutions by introducing an auxiliary function that directly contributes to describe the system. We explore an interesting route, in which one field acts independently, entrapping the other field, inducing important modifications in the profile of the localized structure. The procedure may make the solution to spring up as a kinklike configuration with internal structure, engendering the important feature that also appears directly connected with issues of current interest at the nanometric scale, in particular in the electronic transport in molecules in the presence of vibrational degrees of freedom.

Long range vortex configurations in generalized models with the Maxwell or Chern-Simons dynamics

In this work we deal with vortices in Maxwell-Higgs or Chern-Simons-Higgs models that engender long range tails. We find first order differential equations that support minimum energy solutions which solve the equations of motion. In the Maxwell scenario, we work with generalised magnetic permeabilities that lead to vortices described by solutions, magnetic field and energy density with power-law tails that extend farther than the standard exponential ones. We also find a manner to obtain a Chern-Simons model with the same scalar and magnetic field profiles of the Maxwell case. By doing so, we also find vortices with the aforementioned long range feature, which is also present in the electric field in the Chern-Simons model. The present results may motivate investigations on nonrelativistic models, in particular in the case involving Rydberg atoms, which are known to present long range interactions and relatively long lifetimes.

Model for clustering of living species

Clusters appear in nature in a diversity of contexts, involving distances as long as the cosmological ones, and down to atoms and molecules and the very small nuclear size. They also appear in several other scenarios, in particular in biological systems as in ants, bees, birds, fishes, gnus and rats, for instance. Here we describe a model composed of a set of female and male individuals that obeys simple rules that rapidly transform an uniform initial state into a single cluster that evolves in time as a stable dynamical structure. We show that the center of mass of the structure moves as a random walk, and that the size of the cluster engenders a power law behavior in terms of the number of individuals in the system. Moreover, we also examine other possibilities, in particular the case of two distinct species that can evolve to form one or two distinct clusters.

New twinlike models for scalar fields

This work investigates twinlike scalar field models that support kinks with the same energy density and stability. We find the first order equations compatible with the equations of motion. We use them to calculate the conditions under which they attain the twinlike character. The linear stability is also investigated, and there we show that the addition of extra requirements may lead to the same stability under small fluctuations.

Quasi-compact vortices

We deal with planar vortex structures in Maxwell-Higgs models in the presence of a generalized magnetic permeability. The model under investigation engenders a real parameter that controls the behavior of the tail of the solutions and of the quantities associated to them. As the parameter gets larger, the solutions attain their boundary values faster, unveiling the existence of a peculiar feature, the presence of double exponential tails. However, the solutions are not compact so we call them quasi-compact vortices.

Simple quantum graphs proposal for quantum devices

The control of the quantum transport is an issue of current interest for the construction of new devices. In this work, we investigate this possibility in the realm of quantum graphs. The study allows the identification of two distinct periodic quantum effects which are related to quantum complexity, one being the identification of transport inefficiency, and the other the presence of peaks of full transmission inside regions of suppression of transport in some elementary arrangements of graphs. Motivated by the power of quantum graphs, we elaborate on the construction of simple devices, based on microwave and optical fibers networks, and also on quantum dots, nanowires and nanorings. The elementary devices can be used to construct composed structures with important quantum properties, which may be used to manipulate the quantum transport.

Vortices in Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs models with nonminimal coupling

We investigate the presence of vortex configurations in generalized Maxwell-Chern-Simons models with nonminimal coupling, in which we introduce a function that modifies the dynamical term of the scalar field in the Lagrangian. We first follow a route already considered in previous works to develop the Bogomol'nyi procedure, and, in this context, we use the first order equations to obtain a vortex with a novel behavior at its core. We then go further and introduce a novel procedure to develop the Bogomol'nyi methodology. It supports distinct first order equations, and we then investigate another model, in which the vortex may engender inversion of the magnetic flux, an effect with no precedents in the study of vortices within the nonminimal context.

Oscillons in hyperbolic models

In this work we examine kink-antikink collisions in two distinct hyperbolic models. The models depend on a deformation parameter, which controls two main characteristics of the potential with two degenerate minima: the height of the barrier and the values of the minima. In particular, the rest mass of the kinks decreases monotonically as the deformation parameter increases, and we identify the appearance of a gradual suppression of two bounce windows in the kink scattering and the production of long lived oscillons. The two effects are reported in connection to the presence of more than one vibrational state in the stability potential.

preprint2019arXiv

Scattering of compactlike structures

We investigate the collision of a new class of topological defects that tends to become compact as a control parameter increases to larger and larger values These new compactlike defects have, in general, more than one internal discrete mode depending on the value of the control parameter and, as usual, there is a critical velocity above which the defects escape after the collision. We noticed that below the critical velocity there are the windows of escape presenting fractal structure. An interesting novelty is the appearance of metastable structures with the formation of compactlike defects, maintaining a fixed distance from each other. Another new feature is the formation of boosted localized distributions of the scalar field which we called moving oscillons. These oscillons carry away almost all scalar field energy producing a complete disruption of the compactlike defects. The pattern of the moving oscillons depends on the control parameter, and becomes more complex as we increase its value. We conjecture that the new effects may be connected with the presence of more than one vibrational mode in the spectrum of the stability potential of the model under investigation.

Compact Q-balls

In this work we deal with non-topological solutions of the Q-ball type in two space-time dimensions, in models described by a single complex scalar field that engenders global symmetry. The main novelty is the presence of stable Q-balls solutions that live in a compact interval of the real line and appear from a family of models controlled by two distinct parameters. We find analytical solutions and study their charge and energy, and show how to control the parameters to make the Q-balls classically and quantum mechanically stable.

High Temperature Effects on Compactlike Structures

In this work we investigate the transition from kinks to compactons at high temperatures. We deal with a family of models, described by a real scalar field with standard kinematics, controlled by a single parameter, real and positive. The family of models supports kinklike solutions, and the solutions tend to become compact when the parameter increases to larger and larger values. We study the one-loop corrections at finite temperature, to see how the thermal effects add to the effective potential. The results suggest that the symmetry is restored at very high temperatures.

Kondo effect from a Lorentz-violating domain wall description of superconductivity

We extend recent results on domain wall description of superconductivity in an Abelian Higgs model by introducing a particular Lorentz-violating term. The temperature of the system is interpreted through the fact that the soliton following accelerating orbits is a Rindler observer experiencing a thermal bath. We show that this term can be associated with the {\sl Kondo effect}, that is, the Lorentz-violating parameter is closely related to the concentration of magnetic impurities living on a superconducting domain wall. We also found that the critical temperature decreasing with the impurity concentration as a non single-valued function, for the case $T_K < T_{c0}$, develops a negative curvature and presents deviations from the Abrikosov and Gor'kov theory, a phenomenon already supported by experimental evidence.

Topological strength of magnetic skyrmions

We deal with magnetic structures that attain integer and half-integer skyrmion numbers. We model and solve the problem analytically, and show how the solutions appear in materials that engender distinct, very specific physical properties, and use them to describe their topological features. In particular, we found a way to model skyrmion with a large transition region correlated with the presence of a two-peak skyrmion number density. Moreover, we run into the issue concerning the topological strength of a vortex-like structure and suggest an experimental realization, important to decide how to modify and measure the topological strength of the magnetic structure.

Brane structure from a scalar field in general covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity

In this paper we have considered the structure of the non-projectable Horava-Melby-Thompson (HMT) gravity to find braneworld scenarios. A relativistic scalar field is considered in the matter sector and we have shown how to reduce the equations of motion to first-order differential equations. In particular, we have studied thick brane solutions of both the dilatonic and Randall-Sundrum types.

Braneworld solutions for modified theories of gravity with non-constant curvature

We study braneworld models in the presence of scalar field in a five-dimensional geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, with gravity modified to include a function of the Ricci scalar. We develop a procedure that allows to obtain analytical solution for the braneworld configuration in a diversity of models, in the much harder case where the Ricci scalar is non constant quantity.

Classical resolution of black hole singularities in arbitrary dimension

A metric-affine approach is employed to study higher-dimensional modified gravity theories involving different powers and contractions of the Ricci tensor. It is shown that the field equations are \emph{always} second-order, as opposed to the standard metric approach, where this is only achieved for Lagrangians of the Lovelock type. We point out that this property might have relevant implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence in black hole scenarios. We illustrate these aspects by considering the case of Born-Infeld gravity in $d$ dimensions, where we work out exact solutions for electrovacuum configurations. Our results put forward that black hole singularities in arbitrary dimensions can be cured in a purely classical geometric scenario governed by second-order field equations.

How to build a compact brane

This work deals with braneworld models in a five dimensional curved geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent. The investigation introduces a new family of models, generated from a source scalar field that supports kinklike structures described through the presence of a real parameter, capable of controlling the thickness of the warp factor that describes the five dimensional geometry. The mechanism shows how to get a brane that engenders a compact profile.

Induced higher-derivative massive gravity on a 2-brane in 4D Minkowski space

In this paper we revisit the problem of localizing gravity in a 2-brane embedded in a 4D Minkowski space to address induction of high derivative massive gravity. We explore the structure of propagators to find well-behaved higher-derivative massive gravity induced on the brane. Exploring a special case in the generalized mass term of the graviton propagator we find a model of consistent higher order gravity with an additional unitary massive spin-2 particle and two massless particles: one spin-0 particle and one spin-1 particle. The condition for the absence of tachyons is satisfied for both `right' and `wrong' signs of the Einstein-Hilbert term on the 2-brane. We also find the Pauli-Fierz mass term added to the new massive gravity in three dimensions and recover the low dimensional DGP model.

New braneworld models in the presence of auxiliary fields

We study braneworld models in the presence of auxiliary fields. We use the first-order framework to investigate several distinct possibilities, where the standard braneworld scenario changes under the presence of the parameter that controls the auxiliary fields introduced to modify Einstein's equation. The results add to previous ones, to show that the minimal modification that we investigate contributes to change quantitatively the thick braneworld profile, although no new qualitative effect is capable of being induced by the minimal modification here considered.

Note on the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld scenario

In this work we deal with the presence of braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional space-time with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent. The braneworld scenario is built under the presence of a single real scalar field, and we modify the gravity sector to include generic function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We study several specific models, and we construct exact braneworld solutions, in particular for including the Gauss-Bonnet term at first and second order power. As an interesting result, we show that the brane tends to split for a specific modification in the gravity sector, in the presence of non constant Gauss-Bonnet term.

Robustness of braneworld scenarios against tensorial perturbations

Inspired by the peculiarities of the effective geometry of crystalline structures, we reconsider thick brane scenarios from a metric-affine perspective. We show that for a rather general family of theories of gravity, whose Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the metric and the Ricci tensor, the background and scalar field equations can be written in first-order form, and tensorial perturbations have a non negative definite spectrum, which makes them stable under linear perturbations regardless of the form of the gravity Lagrangian. We find, in particular, that the tensorial zero modes are exactly the same as predicted by Einstein's theory regardless of the scalar field and gravitational Lagrangians.

Stable static structures in models with higher-order derivatives

We investigate the presence of static solutions in generalized models described by a real scalar field in four-dimensional space-time. We study models in which the scalar field engenders higher-order derivatives and spontaneous symmetry breaking, inducing the presence of domain walls. Despite the presence of higher-order derivatives, the models keep to equations of motion second-order differential equations, so we focus on the presence of first-order equations that help us to obtain analytical solutions and investigate linear stability on general grounds. We then illustrate the general results with some specific examples, showing that the domain wall may become compact and that the zero mode may split. Moreover, if the model is further generalized to include k-field behavior, it may contribute to split the static structure itself.

Thick brane in $f(R)$ gravity with Palatini dynamics

This work deals with modified gravity in five dimensional spacetime. We study a thick Palatini $f(R)$ brane, that is, a braneworld scenario described by an anti-de Sitter warped geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, sourced by real scalar field under the Palatini approach, where the metric and the connection are regarded as independent degrees of freedom. We consider a first-order framework which we use to provide exact solutions for the scalar field and warp factor. We also investigate a perturbative scenario such that the Palatini approach is implemented through a Lagrangian $f(R)=R+εR^n$, where the small parameter $ε$ controls the deviation from the standard thick brane case.

Thick brane models in generalized theories of gravity

This work deals with thick braneworld models, in an environment where the Ricci scalar is changed to accommodate the addition of two extra terms, one depending on the Ricci scalar itself, and the other, which takes into account the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field that sources the braneworld scenario. We suppose that the scalar field engenders standard kinematics, and we show explicitly that the gravity sector of this new braneworld scenario is linearly stable. We illustrate the general results investigating two distinct models, focusing on how the brane profile is changed in the modified theories.

A Note on Asymmetric Thick Branes

In this work we study asymmetric thick braneworld scenarios, generated after adding a constant to the superpotential associated to the scalar field. We study in particular models with odd and even polynomial superpotentials, and we show that asymmetric brane can be generated irrespective of the potential being symmetric or asymmetric. We study in addition the nonpolynomial sine-Gordon-like model, also constructed with the inclusion of a constant in the standard superpotential, and we investigate gravitational stability of the asymmetric brane. The results suggest robustness of the new braneworld scenarios and add further possibilities for the construction of asymmetric branes.

Black holes in five-dimensional Palatini $f(R)$ gravity and implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence

We show that theories having second-order field equations in the context of higher-dimensional modified gravity are not restricted to the family of Lovelock Lagrangians, but can also be obtained if no a priori assumption on the relation between the metric and affine structures of space-time is made (Palatini approach). We illustrate this fact by considering the case of Palatini $f(R)$ gravities in five dimensions. Our results provide an alternative avenue to explore new domains of the AdS/CFT correspondence without resorting to {\it ad hoc} quasi-topological constructions.

Braneworld solutions for F(R) models with non-constant curvature

This work deal with braneworld scenarios with generalized gravity. We investigate models where the potential of the scalar field is polynomial or nonpolynomial. We obtain exact and approximated solutions for the scalar field, warp factor and energy density, in the complex scenario with no restriction on the scalar curvature. In particular, we describe the case where the brane may split, engendering internal structure, with the splitting caused by the same parameter that controls deviation from standard gravity.

Cosmological scenarios in modified gravity with non-dynamical fields

In this paper we address the issue of exploring some cosmological scenarios in modified Einstein gravity through non-dynamical (auxiliary) fields. We found that all scenarios are controlled by a specific parameter associated with an auxiliary field. We explore the emergence of inflationary, radiation, matter and dark energy dominated regimes. Furthermore, an interesting possibility such as the emergence of a self-tuning mechanism to the cosmological constant problem in the radiation dominated era is also discussed.

Interfaces with internal structures in generalized rock-paper-scissors models

In this work we investigate the development of stable dynamical structures along interfaces separating domains belonging to enemy partnerships, in the context of cyclic predator-prey models with an even number of species $N \ge 8$. We use both stochastic and field theory simulations in one and two spatial dimensions, as well as analytical arguments, to describe the association at the interfaces of mutually neutral individuals belonging to enemy partnerships and to probe their role in the development of the dynamical structures at the interfaces. We identify an interesting behaviour associated to the symmetric or asymmetric evolution of the interface profiles depending on whether $N/2$ is odd or even, respectively. We also show that the macroscopic evolution of the interface network is not very sensitive internal structure of the interfaces. Although this work focus on cyclic predator prey-models with an even number of species, we argue that the results are expected to be quite generic in the context of spatial stochastic May-Leonard models.

Regular Bulk Solutions and Black Strings from Dynamical Braneworlds with Variable Tension

Regular black strings solutions associated to a dynamical Friedmann-Robertson-Walker braneworld are obtained as a particular case of a regular bulk metric, in the context of a variable brane tension. By analyzing the 5D Kretschmann invariants, we show that the variable brane tension is capable to remove bulk singularities, along some eras of the evolution of the Universe. In particular, the black string time-dependent profile in the bulk is analyzed in the context of the McVittie metric on an Eötvös fluid braneworld, wherein the fluid dynamical brane tension depends on the brane temperature. The whole bulk is shown to be regular for a Universe dominated by non-relativistic matter or by relativistic matter/radiation, as the cosmological time elapses. In a particular case the associated black strings are shown to have finite extension along the extra dimension, what prominently modify the higher-dimensional physical singularities. For a Universe dominated by matter or radiation, we show that the brane singularities are removed along the extra dimension, as an effect of the variable brane tension, corresponding also to the vanishing of the black string horizon. In this case there is a regular solution in the bulk. We show further that no additional physical singularity is introduced in the bulk when the Universe is dominated by a cosmological constant.

String networks in Z_N Lotka-Volterra competition models

In this letter we give specific examples of Z_N Lotka-Volterra competition models leading to the formation of string networks. We show that, in order to promote coexistence, the species may arrange themselves around regions with a high number density of empty sites generated by predator-prey interactions between competing species. These configurations extend into the third dimension giving rise to string networks. We investigate the corresponding dynamics using both stochastic and mean field theory simulations, showing that the coarsening of these string networks follows a scaling law which is analogous to that found in other physical systems in condensed matter and cosmology.

Universal Braess paradox in open quantum dots

We present analytical and numerical results that demonstrate the presence of the Braess paradox in chaotic quantum dots. The paradox that we identify, originally perceived in classical networks, shows that the addition of more capacity to the network can suppress the current flow in the universal regime. We investigate the weak localization term, showing that it presents the paradox encoded in a saturation minimum of the conductance, under the presence of hyperflow in the external leads. In addition, we demonstrate that the weak localization suffers a transition signal depending on the overcapacity lead and presents an echo on the magnetic crossover before going to zero due to the full time-reversal symmetry breaking. We also show that the quantum interference contribution can dominate the Ohm term in the presence of constrictions and that the corresponding Fano factor engenders an anomalous behavior

Black holes in realistic branes: black string-like objects?

A realistic model describing a black string-like object in an expanding Universe is analyzed in the context of the McVittie's solution of the Einstein field equations. The bulk metric near the brane is provided analogously to previous solutions for black strings. In particular, we show that at least when the Hubble parameter on the brane is positive, a black string-like object seems to play a fundamental role in the braneworld scenario, generalizing the standard black strings in the context of a dynamical brane.

Bright solitons from the nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearities

Extending the recent work on models with spatially nonuniform nonlinearities, we study bright solitons generated by the nonpolynomial self-defocusing (SDF) nonlinearity in the framework of the one-dimensional (1D) Muñoz-Mateo - Delgado (MM-D) equation (the 1D reduction of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the SDF nonlinearity), with the local strength of the nonlinearity growing at any rate faster than |x| at large values of coordinate x. We produce numerical solutions and analytical ones, obtained by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA), for nodeless ground states, and for excited modes with 1, 2, 3, and 4 nodes, in two versions of the model, with the steep (exponential) and mild (algebraic) nonlinear-modulation profiles. In both cases, the ground states and the single-node ones are completely stable, while the stability of the higher-order modes depends on their norm (in the case of the algebraic modulation, they are fully unstable). Unstable states spontaneously evolve into their stable lower-order counterparts.

Deformed self-dual magnetic monopoles

We develop a deformation method for attaining new magnetic monopole analytical solutions consistent with generalized Yang-Mills-Higgs model introduced recently. The new solutions fulfill the usual radially symmetric ansatz and the boundary conditions suitable to assure finite energy configurations. We verify our prescription by studying some particular cases involving both exactly and partially analytical initial configurations whose deformation leads to new analytic BPS monopoles. The results show consistency among the models, the deformation procedure and the profile of the new solutions.

First-order formalism for flat branes in generalized N-field models

This work deals with braneworld scenarios obtained from N real scalar fields, whose dynamics is generalized to include higher order power in the derivative of the fields. For the scalar fields being driven by nonstandard dynamics, we show how a first-order formalism can be obtained for flat brane in the presence of several fields. We then illustrate our findings investigating distinct potentials with one and two fields, obtaining stable standard and compact solutions in the braneworld theory. In particular, we have found different models describing the very same warp factor.

Kinklike structures in scalar field theories: from one-field to two-field models

In this paper we study the possibility of constructing two-field models from one-field models. The idea is to start with a given one-field model and use the deformation procedure to generate another one-field model, and then couple the two one-field models nontrivially, to get to a two-field model, together with some explicit topological solutions. We show with several distinct examples that the procedure works nicely and can be used generically.

We illustrate the results with several examples of current interest to high energy physics.

We consider the Randall-Sundrum braneworld theory with a single extra dimension of infinite extent to investigate generalized $f(R)$ braneworld models in the presence of several real scalar fields. In both cases we found explicit solutions for the scalar fields with analytical expressions for the respective warp factors.

Scalar fields and defect structures: perturbative procedure for generalized models

We develop a general procedure to deal with defect structures in generalized models, described by a single real scalar field, in (1,1) spacetime dimensions. The models that we consider have the standard kinetic and potential contributions modified to include corrections that depend on a single small parameters, used to control modification on the kinematics and the potential. We start with standard model that engenders stable defect structures, and we show how to obtain new structures for the generalized models. We examine distinct aspects of the new deformed solutions, including linear stability. We work with several distinct modifications, and we show how to make the new defect structures stable, controlled by the parameter that modify the standard theory. We illustrate the procedure with examples of current interest to high energy physics.

Study of models of the sine-Gordon type in flat and curved spacetime

We study a new family of models of the sine-Gordon type, starting from the sine-Gordon model, including the double sine-Gordon, the triple one, and so on. The models appears as deformations of the starting model, with the deformation controlled by two parameters, one very small, used to control a linear expansion on it, and the other, which specifies the particular model in the family of models. We investigate the presence of topological defects, showing how the solutions can be constructed explicitly from the topological defects of the sine-Gordon model itself. In particular, we delve into the double sine-Gordon model in a braneworld scenario with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, showing that a stable gravity scenario is admissible. Also, we briefly show that the deformation procedure can be used iteratively, leading to a diversity of possibilities to construct families of models of the sine-Gordon type.

BPS Solutions to a Generalized Maxwell-Higgs Model

We look for topological BPS solutions of an Abelian-Maxwell-Higgs theory endowed by non-standard kinetic terms to both gauge and scalar fields. Here, the non-usual dynamics are controlled by two positive functions, G(|ϕ|) and w(|ϕ|), which are related to the self-dual scalar potential V(|ϕ|) of the model by a fundamental constraint. The numerical results we found present interesting new features, and contribute to the development of the recent issue concerning the study of generalized models and their applications.

Generalized correlation functions for conductance fluctuations and the mesoscopic spin Hall effect

We study the spin-Hall conductance fluctuations in ballistic mesoscopic systems. We obtain universal expressions for the spin and charge current fluctuations, cast in terms of current-current autocorrelation functions. We show that the latter are conveniently parametrized as deformed Lorentzian shape lines, functions of an external applied magnetic field and the Fermi energy. We find that the charge current fluctuations show quite unique statistical features at the symplectic-unitary crossover regime. Our findings are based on an evaluation of the generalized transmission coefficients correlation functions within the stub model and are amenable to experimental test.

Generalized self-dual Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs model

We present a consistent BPS framework for a generalized Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs model. The overall model, including its self-dual potential, depends on three different functions, h(|ϕ|,N), w(|ϕ|) and G(|ϕ|), which are functions of the scalar fields only. The BPS energy is proportional to the magnetic flux when w(|ϕ|) and G(|ϕ|) are related to each other by a differential constraint. We present an explicit non-standard model and its topologically non-trivial static configurations, which are described by the usual radially symmetric profile. Finally, we note that the non-standard results behave in a similar way as their standard counterparts, as expected, reinforcing the consistence of the overall construction.

Junctions and spiral patterns in Rock-Paper-Scissors type models

We investigate the population dynamics in generalized Rock-Paper-Scissors models with an arbitrary number of species $N$. We show, for the first time, that spiral patterns with $N$-arms may develop both for odd and even $N$, in particular in models where a bidirectional predation interaction of equal strength between all species is modified to include one N-cyclic predator-prey rule. While the former case gives rise to an interface network with Y-type junctions obeying the scaling law $L \propto t^{1/2}$, where $L$ is the characteristic length of the network and $t$ is the time, the later can lead to a population network with $N$-armed spiral patterns, having a roughly constant characteristic length scale. We explicitly demonstrate the connection between interface junctions and spiral patterns in these models and compute the corresponding scaling laws. This work significantly extends the results of previous studies of population dynamics and could have profound implications for the understanding of biological complexity in systems with a large number of species.

On the presence of twinlike models in cosmology

We study cosmological models described by a single real scalar field. We work within the first-order framework, and we show how the first-order equations simplify the investigation, leading to a direct search of twinlike theories. The procedure is used to introduce distinct models that support the same first-order equations, with the very same energy densities and pressure in flat spacetime. The presence of curvature forbids the construction of twinlike models in the cosmological scenario here investigated.

Quaternionic and Hyper-Kähler Metrics from Generalized Sigma Models

The problem of finding new metrics of interest, in the context of SUGRA, is reduced to two stages: first, solving a generalized BPS sigma model with full quaternionic structure proposed by the authors and, second, constructing the hyper-Kähler metric, or suitable deformations of this condition, taking advantage of the correspondence between the quaternionic left-regular potential and the hyper-Kähler metric of the target space. As illustration, new solutions are obtained using generalized Q-sigma model for Wess-Zumino type superpotentials. Explicit solutions analog to the Berger's sphere and Abraham-Townsend type are given and generalizations of 4-dimensional quaternionic metrics, product of complex ones, are shown and discussed.

Self-tuning Horava-Lifshitz's Universe

In this paper we show that by considering a slightly modified Horava-Lifshitz gravity one can find self-tuning cosmological scenarios. Since in the proposed model the cosmological constant cancels out, then regardless of its value it cannot produce any gravitational effect. As a consequence this removes the gravitational effect of the vacuum energy on the expansion of the Universe. Accelerating scenarios, however, can be found through the presence of conventional and non-conventional fluids.

Spin Accumulation Encoded in Electronic Noise for Mesoscopic Billiards with Finite Tunneling Rates

We study the effects of spin accumulation (inside reservoirs) on electronic transport with tunneling and reflections at the gates of a quantum dot. Within the stub model, the calculation focus on the current-current correlation function for the flux of electrons injected into the quantum dot. The linear response theory used allows to obtain the noise power in the regime of thermal crossover as a function of parameters that reveal the spin polarization at the reservoirs. The calculation is performed employing diagrammatic integration within the universal groups (ensembles of Dyson) for a non-ideal, non-equilibrium chaotic quantum dot. We show that changes in the spin distribution determines significant alteration in noise behavior at values of the tunneling rates close to zero, in the regime of strong reflection at the gates.

Supersymmetry, shape invariance and the Legendre equations

In three space dimensions, when a physical system possesses spherical symmetry, the dynamical equations automatically lead to the Legendre and the associated Legendre equations, with the respective orthogonal polynomials as their standard solutions. This is a very general and important result and appears in many problems in physics (for example, the multipole expansion etc). We study these equations from an operator point of view, much like the harmonic oscillator, and show that there is an underlying shape invariance symmetry in these systems responsible for their solubility. We bring out various interesting features resulting from this analysis from the shape invariance point of view.

Twinlike models for kinks and compactons in flat and warped spacetime

This work deals with the presence of twinlike models in scalar field theories. We show how to build distinct scalar field theories having the same extended solution, with the same energy density and the very same linear stability. Here, however, we start from a given but generalized scalar field theory, and we construct the corresponding twin model, which also engenders generalized dynamics. We investigate how the twinlike models arise in flat and in curved spacetime. In the curved spacetime, we consider a braneword model with the warp factor controlling the spacetime geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent. In particular, we study linear stability in the flat and curved spacetime, and in the case of curved spacetime, in both the gravity and the scalar field sectors, for the two braneworld models.

Twinlike Models for Self-Dual Maxwell-Higgs Theories

In this work we present a theoretical framework that allows for the existence of coherent twinlike models in the context of self-dual Maxwell-Higgs theories. We verify the consistence of this framework by using it to develop some twinlike self-dual Maxwell-Higgs models. We use a combination of theoretical and numerical techniques to show that these models exhibit the very same topological BPS structures, including their field configurations and total energy. The study shows that it is possible to develop a completely consistent prescription, which extends the idea of twinlike models to the case of vortices in Maxwell-Higgs theories.

3D black holes on a 2-brane in 4D Minkowski space

We investigate three-dimensional black hole solutions in the realm of pure and new massive gravity in 2+1 dimensions induced on a 2-brane embedded in a flat four-dimensional spacetime. There is no cosmological constant neither on the brane nor on the four-dimensional bulk. Only gravitational fields are turned on and we indeed find vacuum solutions as black holes in 2+1 dimensions even in the absence of any cosmological solution. There is a crossover scale that controls how far the three- or four-dimensional gravity manifests on the 2-brane. Our solutions also indicate that local BTZ and SdS_3 solutions can flow to local four-dimensional Schwarzschild like black holes, as one probes from small to large distances, which is clearly a higher dimensional manifestation on the 2-brane. This is similar to the DGP scenario where the effects of extra dimensions for large probed distances along the brane manifest.

Compact vortex in a generalized Born-Infeld model

We study vortexlike solutions in a generalized Born-Infeld model. The model is driven by two distinct parameters, one which deals with the Born-Infeld term, and the other, which controls the presence of high-order power term in the covariant derivative of the Higgs field. We numerically solve the equations of motion and depict the main vortex features, for several values of the two parameters of the model. The results indicate the presence of compact vortex, when the parameter responsible for the high-order power in the derivative increases to sufficiently large values.

Conductance peaks in open quantum dots

We present a simple measure of the conductance fluctuations in open ballistic chaotic quantum dots, extending the number of maxima method originally proposed for the statistical analysis of compound nuclear reactions. The average number of extreme points (maxima and minima) in the dimensionless conductance, $T$, as a function of an arbitrary external parameter $Z$, is directly related to the autocorrelation function of $T(Z)$. The parameter $Z$ can be associated to an applied gate voltage causing shape deformation in quantum dot, an external magnetic field, the Fermi energy, etc.. The average density of maxima is found to be $<ρ_{Z}> = α_{Z}/Z_c$, where $α_{Z}$ is a universal constant and $Z_c$ is the conductance autocorrelation length, which is system specific. The analysis of $<ρ_{Z}>$ does not require large statistic samples, providing a quite amenable way to access information about parametric correlations, such as $Z_c$.

Crossover of thermal to shot noise in chaotic cavities

We study the crossover between thermal and shot-noise power in a chaotic quantum dot in the presence of non-ideal contacts at finite temperature. The result explicitly demonstrates that the temperature affect the suppression-amplification effect present in the main quantum noise. In particular, the weak localization contribution to the noise has an anomalous thermal behavior when one let the barriers vary, indicating the presence of a critical point related to specific value of the tunneling barriers. We also show how to get to the opaque limit of the quantum dot at finite temperature.

Presence of asymmetric noise in multi-terminal chaotic cavities

This work deals with chaotic quantum dot connected to two and four leads. We use standard diagrammatic procedure to integrate on the unitary group, to study the main term in the semiclassical expansion of the noise in the three pure Wigner-Dyson ensembles at finite frequency and temperature, in the noninteracting and interacting regimes. We investigate several limits, related to the temperature and the potential difference in the leads, in the presence of a capacitive environment. At the thermal crossover regime, we obtain general expressions described in terms of parameters that can be controlled experimentally. As an interesting result, we show the appearance of asymmetries in the noise, controlled by the topology of the cavity and the number of open channels in the corresponding terminals.

Duality linking standard and tachyon scalar field cosmologies

In this work we investigate the duality linking standard and tachyon scalar field cosmologies. We determine the transformation between standard and tachyon scalar fields and between their associated potentials, corresponding to the same background evolution. We show that, in general, the duality is broken at a perturbative level, when deviations from a homogeneous and isotropic background are taken into account. However, we find that for slow-rolling fields the duality is still preserved at a linear level. We illustrate our results with specific examples of cosmological relevance, where the correspondence between scalar and tachyon scalar field models can be calculated explicitly.

Lorentz-violating effects on topological defects generated by two real scalar fields

The influence of a Lorentz-violation on soliton solutions generated by a system of two coupled scalar fields is investigated. Lorentz violation is induced by a fixed tensor coefficient that couples the two fields. The Bogomol'nyi method is applied and first-order differential equations are obtained whose solutions minimize energy and are also solutions of the equations of motion. The analysis of the solutions in phase space shows how the stability is modified with the Lorentz violation. It is shown explicitly that the solutions preserve linear stability despite the presence of Lorentz violation. Considering Lorentz violation as a small perturbation, an analytical method is employed to yield analytical solutions.

Modulation of breathers in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

We present new solutions to the nonautonomous nonlinear Schroedinger equation that may be realized through convenient manipulation of Bose-Einstein condensates. The procedure is based on the modulation of breathers through an analytical study of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is known to offer a good theoretical model to describe quasi-one-dimensional cigar-shaped condensates. Using a specific Ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. Numerical simulations confirm stability of the breathers against random perturbation on the input profile of the solutions.

In this paper we present analytical breather solutions of the three-dimensional nonlinear generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We use an Ansatz to reduce the three-dimensional equation with space- and time-dependent coefficients into an one-dimensional equation with constant coefficients. The key point is to show that both the space- and time-dependent coefficients of the nonlinear equation can contribute to modulate the breather excitations. We briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the results in Bose-Einstein condensates.

We describe a first-order formalism which we use to obtain new exact Lorentz violating inflationary solutions for a broad family of models, some in the absence of a potential for the inflaton field. Our results show that different conditions are required to solve the horizon and flatness problems. In this paper we deal with a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with chaotic, random, and nonperiodic cubic nonlinearity. Our goal is to study the soliton evolution, with the strength of the nonlinearity perturbed in the space and time coordinates and to check its robustness under these conditions. Comparing with a real system, the perturbation can be related to, e.g., impurities in crystalline structures, or coupling to a thermal reservoir which, on the average, enhances the nonlinearity. We also discuss the relevance of such random perturbations to the dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates and their collective excitations and transport.

Relaxing to a three dimensional brane junction

We suggest a mechanism which leads to 3+1 space-time dimensions. The Universe assumed to have nine spatial dimensions is regarded as a special nonlinear oscillatory system -- a kind of Einstein solid. Confinement from new global defect structures

We investigate confinement from new global defect structures in three spatial dimensions. The global defects arise in models described by a single real scalar field, governed by special scalar potentials. They appear as electrically, magnetically or dyonically charged structures. We show that they induce confinement, when they are solutions of effective QCD-like field theories in which the vacua are regarded as color dielectric media with an anti-screening property. As expected, in three spatial dimensions the monopole-like global defects generate the Coulomb potential as part of several confining potentials.

Defect Structures in Lorentz and CPT Violating Scenarios

We investigate models described by real scalar fields, searching for defect structures in the presence of interactions which explicitly violate Lorentz and CPT symmetries. We first deal with a single field, and we investigate a class of models which supports traveling waves that violate Lorentz invariance. This scenario is then generalized to the case of two (or more) real scalar fields. In the case of two fields, in particular, we introduce another class of models, which supports topological structures that attain a Bogomol'nyi bound, although violating both Lorentz and CPT symmetries. An example is considered, for which we construct the Bogomol'nyi bound and find some explicit solutions. We show that violation of both Lorentz and CPT symmetries induces the appearance of an asymmetry between defects and anti-defects, including the presence of linearly stable solutions with negative energy density in their outer side.
