The Extension Method for Bloch Branes

The nature of gravity and its strength compared with other forces are fundamental challenges faced by the actual science. A path to understanding the hierarchy problem of gravity consists in adding an extra dimension to Einstein-Hilbert's general relativity. Therefore, gravity would be the only force leaking through this region of spacetime also known as brane. Despite the success of the mathematical description for the hierarchy issue through simple thin branes, it is also possible to derive a consistent theory of gravity using thick branes. The present work unveils a new procedure to determine analytic hybrid thick braneworld models. The discussions were based on the so-called Bloch branes, which are constructed via a two-field model coupled with gravity in 5-dimensional spacetime. Both fields used to build the Bloch branes depend only on the extra dimension, and the hybrid branes present internal structure, characterizing them as thick. In this work, we were able to derive new analytic thick brane models by using the extension method. Some of these new branes present a Minkowski spacetime immersed inside of the fifth-dimension. We showed how the symmetry of the emergent branes can be controlled via specific parameters. We also analyzed the stability conditions for each braneworld family, showing possible stable states for gravitons.

New twinlike models for scalar fields

This work investigates twinlike scalar field models that support kinks with the same energy density and stability. We find the first order equations compatible with the equations of motion. We use them to calculate the conditions under which they attain the twinlike character. The linear stability is also investigated, and there we show that the addition of extra requirements may lead to the same stability under small fluctuations.

Compact Q-balls

In this work we deal with non-topological solutions of the Q-ball type in two space-time dimensions, in models described by a single complex scalar field that engenders global symmetry. The main novelty is the presence of stable Q-balls solutions that live in a compact interval of the real line and appear from a family of models controlled by two distinct parameters. We find analytical solutions and study their charge and energy, and show how to control the parameters to make the Q-balls classically and quantum mechanically stable.

High Temperature Effects on Compactlike Structures

In this work we investigate the transition from kinks to compactons at high temperatures. We deal with a family of models, described by a real scalar field with standard kinematics, controlled by a single parameter, real and positive. The family of models supports kinklike solutions, and the solutions tend to become compact when the parameter increases to larger and larger values. We study the one-loop corrections at finite temperature, to see how the thermal effects add to the effective potential. The results suggest that the symmetry is restored at very high temperatures.

Localized four-dimensional gravity in the D-brane background with NS $B$ field

We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential near $p$-branes embedded in a constant NS $B$ field background in the context of M-theory or string theory. The normalizable wave functions of gravity fluctuations around the brane describe only massive modes. We compute such wave functions analytically. We estimate the correction to gravitational potential for small and long distances, and show that there is an intermediate range of distances in which we can identify $4D$ gravity on the brane below a crossover scale given in terms of components of the $B$ field. The $4D$ gravity is metastable and for distances much larger than the crossover scale the $5D$ gravity is recovered.

Braneworld solutions for modified theories of gravity with non-constant curvature

We study braneworld models in the presence of scalar field in a five-dimensional geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, with gravity modified to include a function of the Ricci scalar. We develop a procedure that allows to obtain analytical solution for the braneworld configuration in a diversity of models, in the much harder case where the Ricci scalar is non constant quantity.

Classical resolution of black hole singularities in arbitrary dimension

A metric-affine approach is employed to study higher-dimensional modified gravity theories involving different powers and contractions of the Ricci tensor. It is shown that the field equations are \emph{always} second-order, as opposed to the standard metric approach, where this is only achieved for Lagrangians of the Lovelock type. We point out that this property might have relevant implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence in black hole scenarios. We illustrate these aspects by considering the case of Born-Infeld gravity in $d$ dimensions, where we work out exact solutions for electrovacuum configurations. Our results put forward that black hole singularities in arbitrary dimensions can be cured in a purely classical geometric scenario governed by second-order field equations.

Note on the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld scenario

In this work we deal with the presence of braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional space-time with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent. The braneworld scenario is built under the presence of a single real scalar field, and we modify the gravity sector to include generic function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We study several specific models, and we construct exact braneworld solutions, in particular for including the Gauss-Bonnet term at first and second order power. As an interesting result, we show that the brane tends to split for a specific modification in the gravity sector, in the presence of non constant Gauss-Bonnet term.

Robustness of braneworld scenarios against tensorial perturbations

Inspired by the peculiarities of the effective geometry of crystalline structures, we reconsider thick brane scenarios from a metric-affine perspective. We show that for a rather general family of theories of gravity, whose Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the metric and the Ricci tensor, the background and scalar field equations can be written in first-order form, and tensorial perturbations have a non negative definite spectrum, which makes them stable under linear perturbations regardless of the form of the gravity Lagrangian. We find, in particular, that the tensorial zero modes are exactly the same as predicted by Einstein's theory regardless of the scalar field and gravitational Lagrangians.

Thick brane in $f(R)$ gravity with Palatini dynamics

This work deals with modified gravity in five dimensional spacetime. We study a thick Palatini $f(R)$ brane, that is, a braneworld scenario described by an anti-de Sitter warped geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, sourced by real scalar field under the Palatini approach, where the metric and the connection are regarded as independent degrees of freedom. We consider a first-order framework which we use to provide exact solutions for the scalar field and warp factor. We also investigate a perturbative scenario such that the Palatini approach is implemented through a Lagrangian $f(R)=R+εR^n$, where the small parameter $ε$ controls the deviation from the standard thick brane case.

Black holes in five-dimensional Palatini $f(R)$ gravity and implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence

We show that theories having second-order field equations in the context of higher-dimensional modified gravity are not restricted to the family of Lovelock Lagrangians, but can also be obtained if no a priori assumption on the relation between the metric and affine structures of space-time is made (Palatini approach). We illustrate this fact by considering the case of Palatini $f(R)$ gravities in five dimensions. Our results provide an alternative avenue to explore new domains of the AdS/CFT correspondence without resorting to {\it ad hoc} quasi-topological constructions.

Compact Structures in Standard Field Theory

We investigate the presence of static solutions in models described by real scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. After taking advantage of a procedure introduced sometime ago, we solve intricate nonlinear ordinary differential equations and illustrate how to find compact structures in models engendering standard kinematics. In particular, we study linear stability and show that all the static solutions we have found are linearly stable.

First-order formalism for twinlike models with several real scalar fields

We investigate the presence of twinlike models in theories described by several real scalar fields. We focus on the first-order formalism, and we show how to build distinct scalar field theories that support the same extended solution, with the same energy density and the very same linear stability. The results are valid for two distinct classes of generalized models, that include the standard model and cover a diversity of generalized models of current interest in high energy physics.

Interfaces with internal structures in generalized rock-paper-scissors models

In this work we investigate the development of stable dynamical structures along interfaces separating domains belonging to enemy partnerships, in the context of cyclic predator-prey models with an even number of species $N \ge 8$. We use both stochastic and field theory simulations in one and two spatial dimensions, as well as analytical arguments, to describe the association at the interfaces of mutually neutral individuals belonging to enemy partnerships and to probe their role in the development of the dynamical structures at the interfaces. We identify an interesting behaviour associated to the symmetric or asymmetric evolution of the interface profiles depending on whether $N/2$ is odd or even, respectively. We also show that the macroscopic evolution of the interface network is not very sensitive internal structure of the interfaces. Although this work focus on cyclic predator prey-models with an even number of species, we argue that the results are expected to be quite generic in the context of spatial stochastic May-Leonard models.

New Results on Compact Structures

We investigate the presence of localized solutions in models described by a single real scalar field with generalized dynamics. The study offers a method to solve very intricate nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and we illustrate the results with some examples on localized structures with compact profile, in models with polynomial and nonpolynomial interactions. We also show that the compact solutions we have found are all linearly stable.

Solitonic description of interface profiles in competition models

We consider systems with two competing species whose actions are completely symmetric, with same mobility, reproduction and competition rates. Numerical implementations of the model in two and three-dimensional space show that regions of single species are formed by spontaneous symmetry breaking. We propose a theoretical formalism for describing the static profile of the interfaces of empty spaces separating domains with different species. We compute the topological properties of the interfaces and show that these theoretical functions are useful to the understanding of the dynamics of the network. Finally, we compare the theoretical functions with results from the numerical implementation of the mean field equations and verify that our model fits well the properties of interfaces.

Deformation method for generalized Abelian Higgs-Chern-Simons models

We present an extension of the deformation method applied to self-dual solutions of generalized Abelian Higgs-Chern-Simons models. Starting from a model defined by a potential $V(| ϕ|)$ and a non-canonical kinetic term $ω(| ϕ|) | D_μϕ|^2$ whose analytical domain wall solutions are known, we show that this method allows to obtain an uncountable number of new analytical solutions of new models defined by other functions $\widetilde{V}$ and $\widetildeω$. We present some examples of deformation functions leading to new families of models and their associated analytic solutions.

Deformed self-dual magnetic monopoles

We develop a deformation method for attaining new magnetic monopole analytical solutions consistent with generalized Yang-Mills-Higgs model introduced recently. The new solutions fulfill the usual radially symmetric ansatz and the boundary conditions suitable to assure finite energy configurations. We verify our prescription by studying some particular cases involving both exactly and partially analytical initial configurations whose deformation leads to new analytic BPS monopoles. The results show consistency among the models, the deformation procedure and the profile of the new solutions.

First-order formalism for flat branes in generalized N-field models

This work deals with braneworld scenarios obtained from N real scalar fields, whose dynamics is generalized to include higher order power in the derivative of the fields. For the scalar fields being driven by nonstandard dynamics, we show how a first-order formalism can be obtained for flat brane in the presence of several fields. We then illustrate our findings investigating distinct potentials with one and two fields, obtaining stable standard and compact solutions in the braneworld theory. In particular, we have found different models describing the very same warp factor.

Kinklike structures in scalar field theories: from one-field to two-field models

In this paper we study the possibility of constructing two-field models from one-field models. The idea is to start with a given one-field model and use the deformation procedure to generate another one-field model, and then couple the two one-field models nontrivially, to get to a two-field model, together with some explicit topological solutions. We show with several distinct examples that the procedure works nicely and can be used generically.

New models for two real scalar fields and their kinklike solutions

In this work we study the presence of kinks in models described by two real scalar fields in bi-dimensional space-time. We generate new two-field models, constructed from distinct but important one-field models, and we solve them with techniques that we introduce in the current work. We illustrate the results with several examples of current interest to high energy physics.

Scalar fields and defect structures: perturbative procedure for generalized models

We develop a general procedure to deal with defect structures in generalized models, described by a single real scalar field, in (1,1) spacetime dimensions. The models that we consider have the standard kinetic and potential contributions modified to include corrections that depend on a single small parameters, used to control modification on the kinematics and the potential. We start with standard model that engenders stable defect structures, and we show how to obtain new structures for the generalized models. We examine distinct aspects of the new deformed solutions, including linear stability. We work with several distinct modifications, and we show how to make the new defect structures stable, controlled by the parameter that modify the standard theory. We illustrate the procedure with examples of current interest to high energy physics.

Study of models of the sine-Gordon type in flat and curved spacetime

We study a new family of models of the sine-Gordon type, starting from the sine-Gordon model, including the double sine-Gordon, the triple one, and so on. The models appears as deformations of the starting model, with the deformation controlled by two parameters, one very small, used to control a linear expansion on it, and the other, which specifies the particular model in the family of models. We investigate the presence of topological defects, showing how the solutions can be constructed explicitly from the topological defects of the sine-Gordon model itself. In particular, we delve into the double sine-Gordon model in a braneworld scenario with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, showing that a stable gravity scenario is admissible. Also, we briefly show that the deformation procedure can be used iteratively, leading to a diversity of possibilities to construct families of models of the sine-Gordon type.

Assessing the viability of successful reconstruction of the dynamics of dark energy using varying fundamental couplings

We assess the viability of successful reconstruction of the evolution of the dark energy equation of state using varying fundamental couplings, such as the fine structure constant or the proton-to-electron mass ratio. We show that the same evolution of the dark energy equation of state parameter with cosmic time may be associated with arbitrary variations of the fundamental couplings. Various examples of models with the same (different) background evolution and different (the same) time variation of fundamental couplings are studied in the letter. Although we demonstrate that, for a broad family of models, it is possible to redefine the scalar field in such a way that its dynamics is that of a standard quintessence scalar field, in general such redefinition leads to the breakdown of the linear relation between the scalar field and the variation of fundamental couplings. This implies that the assumption of a linear coupling is not sufficient to guarantee a successful reconstruction of the dark energy dynamics and consequently additional model dependent assumptions about the scalar field responsible for the dark energy need to be made.

Junctions and spiral patterns in Rock-Paper-Scissors type models

We investigate the population dynamics in generalized Rock-Paper-Scissors models with an arbitrary number of species $N$. We show, for the first time, that spiral patterns with $N$-arms may develop both for odd and even $N$, in particular in models where a bidirectional predation interaction of equal strength between all species is modified to include one N-cyclic predator-prey rule. While the former case gives rise to an interface network with Y-type junctions obeying the scaling law $L \propto t^{1/2}$, where $L$ is the characteristic length of the network and $t$ is the time, the later can lead to a population network with $N$-armed spiral patterns, having a roughly constant characteristic length scale. We explicitly demonstrate the connection between interface junctions and spiral patterns in these models and compute the corresponding scaling laws. This work significantly extends the results of previous studies of population dynamics and could have profound implications for the understanding of biological complexity in systems with a large number of species.

Von-Neumann's and related scaling laws in Rock-Paper-Scissors type models

We introduce a family of Rock-Paper-Scissors type models with $Z_N$ symmetry ($N$ is the number of species) and we show that it has a very rich structure with many completely different phases. We study realizations which lead to the formation of domains, where individuals of one or more species coexist, separated by interfaces whose (average) dynamics is curvature driven. This type of behavior, which might be relevant for the development of biological complexity, leads to an interface network evolution and pattern formation similar to the ones of several other nonlinear systems in condensed matter and cosmology.

4D gravity on a BPS brane in 5D AdS-Minkowski space

We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential near an asymmetric BPS brane embedded in a 5D AdS-Minkowski space in the context of supergravity. The normalizable wave functions of gravity fluctuations around the brane describe only massive modes. We compute such wave functions analytically in the thin wall limit. We estimate the correction to gravitational potential for small and long distances, and show that there is an intermediate range of distances in which we can identify 4D gravity on the brane below a crossover scale. The 4D gravity is metastable and for distances much larger than the crossover scale the 5D gravity is recovered.

4D gravity on a non-BPS bent dilatonic brane

We investigate the localization of metastable four-dimensional gravity around a bent dilatonic brane, embedded into a five-dimensional space, that exists only up to distances sufficiently small compared to a crossover scale. Far from such scale, five-dimensional effects strongly deviate the Newtonian potential. We study this effect by considering localization of massive gravity on a non-BPS bent dilatonic 3-brane solution of a five-dimensional supergravity. Our results show that the cosmological constant on the bent brane controls the size of the crossover scale. For sufficiently small positive cosmological constant, that is in accord with the present observations, the crossover scale becomes very large.

Multi-sine-Gordon Models

This work deals with the presence of defect structures in generalized sine-Gordon models. The models are described by periodic potentials, with substructure having one, two, three or more distinct topological sectors, with multiplicity one, two, three or more, respectively. The investigation takes advantage of the deformation procedure introduced in previous work, which is used to introduce the new models, and to study all the defect structures they may comprise.

Quintessence and tachyon dark energy models with a constant equation of state parameter

In this work we determine the correspondence between quintessence and tachyon dark energy models with a constant dark energy equation of state parameter, $w_e$. Although the evolution of both the Hubble parameter and the scalar field potential with redshift is the same, we show that the evolution of quintessence/tachyon scalar fields with redshift is, in general, very different. We explicity demonstrate that if $w_e \neq -1$ the potentials need to be very fine-tuned for the relative perturbation on the equation of state parameter, $Δw_e/(1+w_e) \ll 1$, to be very small around the present time. We also discuss possible implications of our results for the reconstruction of the evolution of $w_e$ with redshift using varying couplings.

Twinlike Models in Scalar Field Theories

This work deals with the presence of defect structures in models described by real scalar field in a diversity of scenarios. The defect structures which we consider are static solutions of the equations of motion which depend on a single spatial dimension. We search for different models, which support the same defect solution, with the very same energy density. We work in flat spacetime, where we introduce and investigate a new class of models. We also work in curved spacetime, within the braneworld context, with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, and there we show how the brane is formed from the static field configuration.

Duality linking standard and tachyon scalar field cosmologies

In this work we investigate the duality linking standard and tachyon scalar field cosmologies. We determine the transformation between standard and tachyon scalar fields and between their associated potentials, corresponding to the same background evolution. We show that, in general, the duality is broken at a perturbative level, when deviations from a homogeneous and isotropic background are taken into account. However, we find that for slow-rolling fields the duality is still preserved at a linear level. We illustrate our results with specific examples of cosmological relevance, where the correspondence between scalar and tachyon scalar field models can be calculated explicitly.

Impact of Lorentz violation on the dynamics of inflation

This work deals with the dynamics of inflation in the context of a scalar-vector-tensor theory of gravity exhibiting spontaneous Lorentz violation at early times. We describe a first-order formalism which we use to obtain new exact Lorentz violating inflationary solutions for a broad family of models, some in the absence of a potential for the inflaton field. Our results show that different conditions are required to solve the horizon and flatness problems. In particular, we find a necessary condition for inflation to provide a solution to both problems and we show that in inflationary models with no inflaton potential a period of superinflation might be necessary to solve the flatness problem.

First-order framework and generalized global defect solutions

This work deals with defect structures in models described by scalar fields. The investigations focus on generalized models, with the kinetic term modified to allow for a diversity of possibilities. We develop a new framework, in which we search for first-order differential equations which solve the equations of motion. The main issue concerns the introduction of a new function, which works like the superpotential usually considered in the standard situation. We investigate the problem in the general case, with an arbitrary number of fields, and we present several explicit examples in the case of a single real scalar field.

New Lump-like Structures in Scalar-field Models

In this work we investigate lump-like solutions in models described by a single real scalar field. We start considering non-topological solutions with the usual lump-like form, and then we study other models, where the bell-shape profile may have varying amplitude and width, or develop a flat plateau at its top, or even induce a lump on top of another lump. We suggest possible applications where these exotic solutions might be used in several distinct branches of physics.

Relaxing to a three dimensional brane junction

We suggest a mechanism which leads to 3+1 space-time dimensions. The Universe assumed to have nine spatial dimensions is regarded as a special nonlinear oscillatory system -- a kind of Einstein solid. There are p-brane solutions which manifest as phase oscillations separating different phase states. The presence of interactions allows for bifurcations of higher dimensional spaces to lower dimensional ones in the form of brane junctions. We argue this is a natural way to select lower dimensions.
