Central extensions of Lie groups preserving a differential form

Let $M$ be a manifold with a closed, integral $(k+1)$-form $ω$, and let $G$ be a Fréchet-Lie group acting on $(M,ω)$. As a generalization of the Kostant-Souriau extension for symplectic manifolds, we consider a canonical class of central extensions of $\mathfrak{g}$ by $\mathbb{R}$, indexed by $H^{k-1}(M,\mathbb{R})^*$. We show that the image of $H_{k-1}(M,\mathbb{Z})$ in $H^{k-1}(M,\mathbb{R})^*$ corresponds to a lattice of Lie algebra extensions that integrate to smooth central extensions of $G$ by the circle group $\mathbb{T}$. The idea is to represent a class in $H_{k-1}(M,\mathbb{Z})$ by a weighted submanifold $(S,β)$, where $β$ is a closed, integral form on $S$. We use transgression of differential characters from $S$ and $ M $ to the mapping space $ C^\infty(S, M) $, and apply the Kostant-Souriau construction on $ C^\infty(S, M) $.

Vortex sheets in ideal 3D fluids, coadjoint orbits, and characters

We describe the coadjoint orbits of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^3$ associated to the motion of closed vortex sheets in ideal 3D fluids. We show that these coadjoint orbits can be identified with nonlinear Grassmannians of compact surfaces enclosing a given volume and endowed with a closed 1-form describing the vorticity density. If the vorticity density has discrete period group and is nonvanishing, the vortex sheet is given by a surface of genus one fibered by its vortex lines over a circle. We determine the Hamilton equations for such vortex sheets relative to the Hamiltonian function suggested in Khesin (2012) and prove that there are no stationary solutions having rotational symmetries. These coadjoint orbits are shown to be prequantizable if the period group of the 1-form and the volume enclosed by the surface satisfy an Onsager-Feynman relation, as argued in Goldin et al. (1991) for the case of open vortex sheets (tubes/ribbons). We find a character for the prequantizable coadjoint orbits, as well as a polarization group on which the character extends, which is a first step beyond prequantization.

A dual pair for the contact group

Generalizing the canonical symplectization of contact manifolds, we construct an infinite dimensional non-linear Stiefel manifold of weighted embeddings into a contact manifold. This space carries a symplectic structure such that the contact group and the group of reparametrizations act in a Hamiltonian fashion with equivariant moment maps, respectively, giving rise to a dual pair, called the EPContact dual pair. Via symplectic reduction, this dual pair provides a conceptual identification of non-linear Grassmannians of weighted submanifolds with certain coadjoint orbits of the contact group. Moreover, the EPContact dual pair gives rise to singular solutions for the geodesic equation on the group of contact diffeomorphisms. For the projectivized cotangent bundle, the EPContact dual pair is closely related to the EPDiff dual pair due to Holm and Marsden, and leads to a geometric description of some coadjoint orbits of the full diffeomorphism group.

A dual pair for free boundary fluids

We construct a dual pair associated to the Hamiltonian geometric formulation of perfect fluids with free boundaries. This dual pair is defined on the cotangent bundle of the space of volume preserving embeddings of a manifold with boundary into a boundaryless manifold of the same dimension. The dual pair properties are rigorously verified in the infinite dimensional Fréchet manifold setting. It provides an example of a dual pair associated to actions that are not completely mutually orthogonal.

Principal bundles of embeddings and nonlinear Grassmannians

We present several principal bundles of embeddings of compact manifolds (with or without boundary) whose base manifolds are nonlinear Grassmannians. We study their infinite dimensional differential manifold structure in the Fréchet category. This study is motivated by the occurrence of such objects in the geometric Lagrangian formulation of free boundary continuum mechanics and in the study of the associated infinite dimensional dual pairs structures.

Abelian extensions via prequantization

We generalize the prequantization central extension of a group of diffeomorphisms preserving a closed 2-form ω(ω-invariant diffeomorphisms) to an abelian extension of a group of diffeomorphisms preserving a closed vector valued 2-form ω, up to a linear isomorphism (ω-equivariant diffeomorphisms). Every abelian extension of a simply connected Lie group can be obtained as the pull-back of such a prequantization abelian extension.

Geometric dynamics on the automorphism group of principal bundles: geodesic flows, dual pairs and chromomorphism groups

We formulate Euler-Poincaré equations on the Lie group Aut(P) of automorphisms of a principal bundle P. The corresponding flows are referred to as EPAut flows. We mainly focus on geodesic flows associated to Lagrangians of Kaluza-Klein type. In the special case of a trivial bundle P, we identify geodesics on certain infinite-dimensional semidirect-product Lie groups that emerge naturally from the construction. This approach leads naturally to a dual pair structure containing δ-like momentum map solutions that extend previous results on geodesic flows on the diffeomorphism group (EPDiff). In the second part, we consider incompressible flows on the Lie group of volume-preserving automorphisms of a principal bundle. In this context, the dual pair construction requires the definition of chromomorphism groups, i.e. suitable Lie group extensions generalizing the quantomorphism group.

Induced differential forms on manifolds of functions

Differential forms on the Fréchet manifold F(S,M) of smooth functions on a compact k-dimensional manifold S can be obtained in a natural way from pairs of differential forms on M and S by the hat pairing. Special cases are the transgression map associating (p-k)-forms on F(S,M) to p-forms on M (hat pairing with a constant function) and the bar map associating p-forms on F(S,M) to p-forms on M (hat pairing with a volume form). We develop a hat calculus similar to the tilda calculus for non-linear Grassmannians.

The n:m resonance dual pair

In this paper we build dual pairs of Poisson maps \[ \RR\stackrel{R_\pm}{\longleftarrow}(D,\om_\pm) \stackrel{Π_\pm}{\longrightarrow} B \] associated to $n:m$ resonance, as well as to $n:-m$ resonance. Except for the above mentioned cases $1:\pm1$, these are not pairs of momentum maps. Here $D$ is an open subset of $\CC^2$ with the above mentioned symplectic forms $\om_\pm$, and $B$ an open subset of $\RR^3$. The Poisson structure on $B$, which depends on the natural numbers $n$ and $m$, is not Lie-Poisson. Instead, its symplectic leaves are the Kummer shapes: bounded surfaces for $n:m$ resonance, and unbounded surfaces for $n:-m$ resonance

Dual pairs in fluid dynamics

This paper is a rigorous study of the dual pair structure of the ideal fluid and the dual pair structure for the $n$-dimensional Camassa-Holm (EPDiff) equation, including the proofs of the necessary transitivity results. In the case of the ideal fluid, we show that a careful definition of the momentum maps leads naturally to central extensions of diffeomorphism groups such as the group of quantomorphisms and the Ismagilov central extension.

Generalized Euler-Poincaré equations on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, orbit invariants and applications

We develop the necessary tools, including a notion of logarithmic derivative for curves in homogeneous spaces, for deriving a general class of equations including Euler-Poincaré equations on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces. Orbit invariants play an important role in this context and we use these invariants to prove global existence and uniqueness results for a class of PDE. This class includes Euler-Poincaré equations that have not yet been considered in the literature as well as integrable equations like Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, $μ$CH and $μ$DP equations, and the geodesic equations with respect to right invariant Sobolev metrics on the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle.

An abstract setting for hamiltonian actions

In this paper we develop an abstract setup for hamiltonian group actions as follows: Starting with a continuous 2-cochain $ω$ on a Lie algebra $h$ with values in an $h$-module $V$, we associate subalgebras $sp(h,ω) \supeq ham(h,ω)$ of symplectic, resp., hamiltonian elements. Then $ham(h,ω)$ has a natural central extension which in turn is contained in a larger abelian extension of $sp(h,ω)$. In this setting, we study linear actions of a Lie group $G$ on $V$ which are compatible with a homomorphism $g \to ham(h,ω)$, i.e. abstract hamiltonian actions, corresponding central and abelian extensions of $G$ and momentum maps $J : g \to V$.

The path group construction of Lie group extensions

We present an explicit realization of abelian extensions of infinite dimensional Lie groups using abelian extensions of path groups, by generalizing Mickelsson's approach to loop groups and the approach of Losev-Moore-Nekrasov-Shatashvili to current groups. We apply our method to coupled cocycles on current Lie algebras and to Lichnerowicz cocycles on the Lie algebra of divergence free vector fields.
