An alternative proof of Tataru's dispersive estimates

The aim of this article is to give an alternative proof of Tataru's dispersive estimates for wave equations posed on the hyperbolic space. Based on the formula for the wave kernel on hyperbolic spaces, in \cite{MR2743652}, we give the proof from the perspective of Bessel potentials, by exploiting various facts about Gamma functions, modified Bessel functions, and Bessel potentials. This leads to our proof being more self-contained than that in Tataru \cite{MR1804518}.

Blow-up for semilinear wave equations on Kerr black hole backgrounds

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the blow up part of the John theorem, with $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$, on the Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole backgrounds. Concerning the case of Schwarzschild, we construct a class of small data, so that the solution blows up along the outgoing null cone, which applies for both $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$ and the focusing nonlinearity $F_p(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$. The proof suggests that the black hole does not have any essential influence on the formation of singularity, in the region away from the Cauchy horizon $r=r_-$ or the singularity $r=0$. Our approach is also robust enough to be adapted for general asymptotically flat space-time manifolds, possibly exterior to a compact domain, with spatial dimension $n\ge 2$. Typical examples include exterior domains, asymptotically Euclidean spaces, Reissner-Nördström space-times, and Kerr-Newman space-times.

Deep Residual Shrinkage Networks for EMG-based Gesture Identification

This work introduces a method for high-accuracy EMG based gesture identification. A newly developed deep learning method, namely, deep residual shrinkage network is applied to perform gesture identification. Based on the feature of EMG signal resulting from gestures, optimizations are made to improve the identification accuracy. Finally, three different algorithms are applied to compare the accuracy of EMG signal recognition with that of DRSN. The result shows that DRSN excel traditional neural networks in terms of EMG recognition accuracy. This paper provides a reliable way to classify EMG signals, as well as exploring possible applications of DRSN.

Lifespan estimates for semilinear wave equations with space dependent damping and potential

In this work, we investigate the influence of general damping and potential terms on the blow-up and lifespan estimates for energy solutions to power-type semilinear wave equations. The space-dependent damping and potential functions are assumed to be critical or short range, spherically symmetric perturbation. The blow up results and the upper bound of lifespan estimates are obtained by the so-called test function method. The key ingredient is to construct special positive solutions to the linear dual problem with the desired asymptotic behavior, which is reduced, in turn, to constructing solutions to certain elliptic "eigenvalue" problems.

Combined effects of two nonlinearities in lifespan of small solutions to semi-linear wave equations

This paper investigates the combined effects of two distinctive power-type nonlinear terms (with parameters $p,q>1$) in the lifespan of small solutions to semi-linear wave equations. We determine the full region of $(p,q)$ to admit global existence of small solutions, at least for spatial dimensions $n=2, 3$. Moreover, for many $(p,q)$ when there is no global existence, we obtain sharp lower bound of the lifespan, which is of the same order as the upper bound of the lifespan.

The Glassey conjecture for nontrapping obstacles

We verify the three-dimensional Glassey conjecture for exterior domain (M, g), where the metric g is asymptotically Euclidean, provided that certain local energy assumption is satisfied. The radial Glassey conjecture exterior to a ball is also verified for dimension three or higher. The local energy assumption is satisfied for many important cases, including exterior domain with nontrapping obstacles and flat metric, exterior domain with star-shaped obstacles and small asymptotically Euclidean metric, as well as the nontrapping asymptotically Euclidean manifolds (R^n, g).

Global existence of null-form wave equations on small asymptotically Euclidean manifolds

We prove the global existence of the small solutions to the Cauchy problem for quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition on $(R^3, g)$, where the metric $g$ is a small perturbation of the flat metric and approaches the Euclidean metric like $(1+|x|)^{-a}$ with $a>1$. Global and almost global existence for systems without the null condition are also discussed for certain small time-dependent perturbations of the flat metric in the appendix.

preprint2014arXiv

The Glassey conjecture on asymptotically flat manifolds

We verify the 3-dimensional Glassey conjecture on asymptotically flat manifolds $(R^{1+3}, g)$, where the metric $g$ is certain small space-time perturbation of the flat metric, as well as the nontrapping asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. Moreover, for radial asymptotically flat manifolds $(R^{1+n}, g)$ with $n\ge 3$, we verify the Glassey conjecture in the radial case. High dimensional wave equations with higher regularity are also discussed. The main idea is to exploit local energy and KSS estimates with variable coefficients, together with the weighted Sobolev estimates including trace estimates.

The Strauss conjecture on Kerr black hole backgrounds

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.

Generalized and weighted Strichartz estimates

In this paper, we explore the relations between different kinds of Strichartz estimates and give new estimates in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we prove the generalized and weighted Strichartz estimates for a large class of dispersive operators including the Schrödinger and wave equation. As a sample application of these new estimates, we are able to prove the Strauss conjecture with low regularity for dimension 2 and 3.

On almost global existence and local well-posedness for some 3-D quasi-linear wave equations

We study the Cauchy problem for a quasilinear wave equation with low-regularity data. A space-time $L^2$ estimate for the variable coefficient wave equation plays a central role for this purpose. Assuming radial symmetry, we establish the almost global existence of a strong solution for every small initial data in $H^2 \times H^1$. We also show that the initial value problem is locally well-posed.

Strichartz estimates for Dirichlet-wave equations in two dimensions with applications

We establish the Strauss conjecture for nontrapping obstacles when the spatial dimension $n$ is two. As pointed out in \cite{HMSSZ} this case is more subtle than $n=3$ or 4 due to the fact that the arguments of the first two authors \cite{SmSo00}, Burq \cite{B} and Metcalfe \cite{M} showing that local Strichartz estimates for obstactles imply global ones require that the Sobolev index, $γ$, equal 1/2 when $n=2$. We overcome this difficulty by interpolating between energy estimates ($γ=0$) and ones for $γ=\frac12$ that are generalizations of Minkowski space estimates of Fang and the third author \cite{FaWa2}, \cite{FaWa}, the second author \cite{So08} and Sterbenz \cite{St05}.

preprint2011arXiv

The Glassey conjecture with radially symmetric data

In this paper, we verify the Glassey conjecture in the radial case for all spatial dimensions, which states that, for the nonlinear wave equations of the form $\Box u=|\nabla u|^p$, the critical exponent to admit global small solutions is given by $p_c=1+\frac{2}{n-1}$. Moreover, we are able to prove the existence results with low regularity assumption on the initial data and extend the solutions to the sharp lifespan. The main idea is to exploit the trace estimates and KSS type estimates.

preprint2010arXiv

Almost global existence for some semilinear wave equations with almost critical regularity

For any subcritical index of regularity $s>3/2$, we prove the almost global well posedness for the 2-dimensional semilinear wave equation with the cubic nonlinearity in the derivatives, when the initial data are small in the Sobolev space $H^s\times H^{s-1}$ with certain angular regularity. The main new ingredient in the proof is an endpoint version of the generalized Strichartz estimates in the space $L^2_t L_{|x|}^\infty L^2_θ([0,T]\times \R^2)$. In the last section, we also consider the general semilinear wave equations with the spatial dimension $n\ge 2$ and the order of nonlinearity $p\ge 3$.

Concerning the Wave equation on Asymptotically Euclidean Manifolds

We obtain KSS, Strichartz and certain weighted Strichartz estimate for the wave equation on $(\R^d, \mathfrak{g})$, $d \geq 3$, when metric $\mathfrak{g}$ is non-trapping and approaches the Euclidean metric like $ x ^{- ρ}$ with $ρ>0$. Using the KSS estimate, we prove almost global existence for quadratically semilinear wave equations with small initial data for $ρ> 1$ and $d=3$. Also, we establish the Strauss conjecture when the metric is radial with $ρ>0$ for $d= 3$.

Weighted Strichartz Estimates with Angular Regularity and their Applications

In this paper, we establish an optimal dual version of trace estimate involving angular regularity. Based on this estimate, we get the generalized Morawetz estimates and weighted Strichartz estimates for the solutions to a large class of evolution equations, including the wave and Schrödinger equation. As applications, we prove the Strauss' conjecture with a kind of mild rough data for $2\le n\le 4$, and a result of global well-posedness with small data for some nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $L^2$-subcritical nonlinearity.

Ill-Posedness for Semilinear Wave Equations with Very Low Regularity

In this paper, we study the ill-posdness of the Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equation with very low regularity, where the nonlinear term depends on $u$ and $\partial_t u$. We prove a ill-posedness result for the "defocusing" case, and give an alternative proof for the supercritical "focusing" case, which improves our previous result in Chin. Ann. Math. Ser. B 26(3), 361-378, 2005.

Sharp Global Existence for Semilinear Wave Equation with Small Data

By using the Strichartz esitmate and Picard iteration, we prove the subcritical(critical in some cases) global solution in $C_t H_x^s\cap C_t^1 H^{s-1}_x$ with small data for semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity of type $(\partial u)^k$($k\ge 1+\frac{4}{n-1}\vee 2$ and $(n,k)\neq (3,3)$). For $(n,k)=(3,3)$, we get the almost global existence. In addition, we give the global existence with radial data when $k> 1+\frac{2}{n-1}\vee 2$.
