Stability of graphical tori with almost nonnegative scalar curvature

By works of Schoen-Yau and Gromov-Lawson any Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and diffeomorphic to a torus is isometric to a flat torus. Gromov conjectured subconvergence of tori with respect to a weak Sobolev type metric when the scalar curvature goes to $0$. We prove flat and intrinsic flat subconvergence to a flat torus for noncollapsing sequences of $3$-dimensional tori $M_j$ that can be realized as graphs of certain functions defined over flat tori satisfying a uniform upper diameter bound and scalar curvature bounds of the form $R_{g_{M_j}} \geq -1/j$. We also show that the volume of the manifolds of the convergent subsequence converges to the volume of the limit space. We do so adapting results of Huang-Lee, Huang-Lee-Sormani and Allen-Perales-Sormani. Furthermore, our results also hold when the condition on the scalar curvature of a torus $(M, g_M)$ is replaced by a bound on the quantity $-\int_T \min\{R_{g_M},0\} d{\mbox{vol}_{g_T}}$, where $M=\mbox{graph}(f)$, $f: T \to \mathbb R$ and $(T,g_T)$ is a flat torus. Using arguments developed by Alaee, McCormick and the first named author after this work was completed, our results hold for dimensions $n \geq 4$ as well.

Stability of metric measure spaces with integral Ricci curvature bounds

In this article we study stability and compactness w.r.t. measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of smooth metric measure spaces with integral Ricci curvature bounds. More precisely, we prove that a sequence of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds subconverges to a metric measure space that satisfies the curvature-dimension condition $CD(K,n)$ in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani provided the $L^p$-norm for $p>\frac{n}{2}$ of the part of the Ricci curvature that lies below $K$ converges to $0$. The results also hold for sequences of general smooth metric measure spaces $(M,g_M, e^{-f}\mbox{vol}_M)$ where Bakry-Emery curvature replaces Ricci curvature. Corollaries are a Brunn-Minkowski-type inequality, a Bonnet-Myers estimate and a statement on finiteness of the fundamental group. Together with a uniform noncollapsing condition the limit even satisfies the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition $RCD(K,N)$. This implies volume and diameter almost rigidity theorems.

The Heintze-Karcher inequality for metric measure spaces

In this note we prove the Heintze-Karcher inequality in the context of essentially non-branching metric measure spaces satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani. The proof is based on the the needle decomposition technique for metric measure spaces introduced by Cavalletti-Mondino. Moreover, in the class of spaces satisfying a Riemannian curvature-dimension condition with positive curvature the equality case is characterized.

Evolution variational inequality and Wasserstein control in variable curvature context

In this note we continue the analysis of metric measure space with variable ricci curvature bounds. First, we study $(κ,N)$-convex functions on metric spaces where $κ$ is a lower semi-continuous function, and gradient flow curves in the sense of a new evolution variational inequality that captures the information that is provided by $κ$. Then, in the spirit of previous work by Erbar, Kuwada and Sturm \cite{erbarkuwadasturm} we introduce an entropic curvature-dimension condition $CD^e(κ,N)$ for metric measure spaces and lower semi-continuous $κ$. This condition is stable with respect to Gromov convergence and we show that is equivalent to the reduced curvature-dimension condition $CD^*(κ,N)$ provided the space is non-branching. Finally, we introduce a Riemannian curvature-dimension condition in terms of an evolution variational inequality on the Wasserstein space. A consequence is a new differential Wasserstein contraction estimate.

On the geometry of metric measure spaces with variable curvature bounds

Motivated by a classical comparison result of J. C. F. Sturm we introduce a curvature-dimension condition CD(k,N) for general metric measure spaces and variable lower curvature bound k. In the case of non-zero constant lower curvature our approach coincides with the celebrated condition that was proposed by K.-T. Sturm. We prove several geometric properties as sharp Bishop-Gromov volume growth comparison or a sharp generalized Bonnet-Myers theorem (Schneider's Theorem). Additionally, our curvature-dimension condition is stable with respect to measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, and it is stable with respect to tensorization of finitely many metric measure spaces provided a non-branching condition is assumed.

Cones over metric measure spaces and the maximal diameter theorem

The main result of this article states that the (K;N)-cone over some metric measure space satisfies the reduced Riemannian curvature-dimension condition RCD^*(KN;N+1) if and only if the underlying space satisfies RCD^*(N-1;N). The proof uses a characterization of reduced Riemannian curvature-dimension bounds by Bochner's inequality that was established for metric measure spaces by Erbar, Kuwada and Sturm and independently by Ambrosio, Mondino and Savaré. As corollary of our result and the Cheeger-Gigli-Gromoll splitting theorem we obtain a maximal diameter theorem for metric measure spaces that satisfy a reduced Riemannian curvature-dimension condition.

Failure of topological rigidity results for the measure contraction property

We give two examples of metric measure spaces satisfying the measure contraction property MCP(K,N) but having different topological dimensions at different regions of the space. The first one satisfies MCP(0,3) and contains a subset isometric to $\mathbb{R}$, but does not topologically split. The second space satisfies MCP(2,3) and has diameter $π$, which is the maximal possible diameter for a space satisfying MCP(N-1,N), but is not a topological spherical suspension. The latter example gives an answer to a question by Ohta.

Ricci curvature bounds for warped products

We prove generalized lower Ricci curvature bounds for warped products over complete Finsler manifolds. On the one hand our result covers a theorem of Bacher and Sturm concerning euclidean and spherical cones. On the other hand it can be seen in analogy to a result of Bishop and Alexander in the setting of Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded from below. For the proof we combine techniques developed in these papers. Because the Finsler product metric can degenerate we regard a warped product as metric measure space that is in general neither a Finsler manifold nor an Alexandrov space again but a space satisfying a curvature-dimension condition in the sense of Lott-Villani/Sturm.
