Heat Flow with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions via Optimal Transport and Gluing of Metric Measure Spaces

We introduce the transportation-annihilation distance $W_p^\sharp$ between subprobabilities and derive contraction estimates with respect to this distance for the heat flow with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on an open set in a metric measure space. We also deduce the Bochner inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian as well as gradient estimates for the associated Dirichlet heat flow. For the Dirichlet heat flow, moreover, we establish a gradient flow interpretation within a suitable space of charged probabilities. In order to prove this, we will work with the \emph{doubling} of the open set, the space obtained by gluing together two copies of it along the boundary.

Tamed spaces -- Dirichlet spaces with distribution-valued Ricci bounds

We develop the theory of tamed spaces which are Dirichlet spaces with distribution-valued lower bounds on the Ricci curvature and investigate these from an Eulerian point of view. To this end we analyze in detail singular perturbations of Dirichlet form by a broad class of distributions. The distributional Ricci bound is then formulated in terms of an integrated version of the Bochner inequality using the perturbed energy form and generalizing the well-known Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension condition. Among other things we show the equivalence of distributional Ricci bounds to gradient estimates for the heat semigroup in terms of the Feynman-Kac semigroup induced by the taming distribution as well as consequences in terms of functional inequalities. We give many examples of tamed spaces including in particular Riemannian manifolds with either interior singularities or singular boundary behavior.

Optimal transport, gradient estimates, and pathwise Brownian coupling on spaces with variable Ricci bounds

Given a metric measure space $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ and a lower semicontinuous, lower bounded function $k\colon X\to\mathbb{R}$, we prove the equivalence of the synthetic approaches to Ricci curvature at $x\in X$ being bounded from below by $k(x)$ in terms of $\bullet$ the Bakry-Émery estimate $ΔΓ(f)/2 - Γ(f,Δf) \geq k\,Γ(f)$ in an appropriate weak formulation, and $\bullet$ the curvature-dimension condition $\mathrm{CD}(k,\infty)$ in the sense Lott-Sturm-Villani with variable $k$. Moreover, for all $p\in(1,\infty)$, these properties hold if and only if the perturbed $p$-transport cost \begin{equation*} W_p^{\underline{k}}(μ_1,μ_2,t):=\inf_{(\mathsf{b}^1,\mathsf{b}^2)} \mathbb{E}\Big[\mathrm{e}^{\int_0^{2t} p \underline{k}\left(\mathsf{b}^1_{r}, \mathsf{b}^2_{r}\right)/2\,\mathrm{d} r} \mathsf{d}^p\!\left(\mathsf{b}^1_{2t},\mathsf{b}^2_{2t} \right)\!\Big]^{1/p} \end{equation*} is nonincreasing in $t$. The infimum here is taken over pairs of coupled Brownian motions $\mathsf{b}^1$ and $\mathsf{b}^2$ on $X$ with given initial distributions $μ_1$ and $μ_2$, respectively, and $\underline{k}(x,y) := \inf_γ\int_0^1 k(γ_s)\,\mathrm{d} s$ denotes the "average" of $k$ along geodesics $γ$ connecting $x$ and $y$. Furthermore, for any pair of initial distributions $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ on $X$, we prove the existence of a pair of coupled Brownian motions $\mathsf{b}^1$ and $\mathsf{b}^2$ such that a.s. for every $s,t\in[0,\infty)$ with $s\leq t$, we have \begin{equation*} \mathsf{d}\!\left(\mathsf{b}_t^1,\mathsf{b}_t^2\right)\leq \mathrm{e}^{-\int_s^t \underline{k}\left(\mathsf{b}_r^1,\mathsf{b}_r^2\right)/2\,\mathrm{d} r} \mathsf{d}\!\left(\mathsf{b}_s^1,\mathsf{b}_s^2\right)\!. \end{equation*}

Metric Measure Spaces with Variable Ricci Bounds and Couplings of Brownian Motions

The goal of this paper is twofold: we study metric measure spaces $(X,d,m)$ with variable lower bounds for the Ricci curvature and we study pathwise coupling of Brownian motions. Given any lower semicontinuous function $k:X\to \mathbb R$ we introduce the curvature-dimension condition $CD(k,\infty)$ which canonically extends the curvature-dimension condition $CD(K,\infty)$ of Lott-Sturm-Villani for constant $K\in \mathbb R$. For infinitesimally Hilbertian spaces we prove i) its equivalence to an evolution-variation inequality $EVI_k$ which in turn extends the $EVI_K$-inequality of Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré; ii) its stability under convergence and its local-to-global property. For metric measure spaces with uniform lower curvature bounds $K$ we prove that for each pair of initial distributions $μ_1,μ_2$ on $X$ there exists a coupling $B_t=(B_t^1,B_t^2)$, $t\ge0$, of two Brownian motions on $X$ with the given initial distributions such that a.s. for all $s,t\ge0$ $$d(B^1_{s+t},B^2_{s+t})\le e^{-K t/2}\cdot d(B_s^1,B_s^2).$$

Local curvature-dimension condition implies measure-contraction property

We prove that for non-branching metric measure spaces the local curvature condition CDloc(K,N) implies the global version of MCP(K,N). The curvature condition CD(K,N) introduced by the second author and also studied by Lott & Villani is the generalization to metric measure space of lower bounds on Ricci curvature together with upper bounds on the dimension. It is worth pointing out that our result implies sharp Bishop-Gromov volume growth inequality and sharp Poincaré inequality.

Non-branching geodesics and optimal maps in strong CD(K,{\infty})-spaces

We prove that in metric measure spaces where the entropy functional is K-convex along every Wasserstein geodesic any optimal transport between two absolutely continuous measures with finite second moments lives on a non-branching set of geodesics. As a corollary we obtain that in these spaces there exists only one optimal transport plan between any two absolutely continuous measures with finite second moments and this plan is given by a map. The results are applicable in metric measure spaces having Riemannian Ricci-curvature bounded below, and in particular they hold also for Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci-curvature bounded from below by some constant.

On the Equivalence of the Entropic Curvature-Dimension Condition and Bochner's Inequality on Metric Measure Spaces

We prove the equivalence of the curvature-dimension bounds of Lott-Sturm-Villani (via entropy and optimal transport) and of Bakry--Émery (via energy and Γ_2$-calculus) in complete generality for infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces. In particular, we establish the full Bochner inequality on such metric measure spaces. Moreover, we deduce new contraction bounds for the heat flow on Riemannian manifolds and on mms in terms of the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance.

Optimal transport from Lebesgue to Poisson

This paper is devoted to the study of couplings of the Lebesgue measure and the Poisson point process. We prove existence and uniqueness of an optimal coupling whenever the asymptotic mean transportation cost is finite. Moreover, we give precise conditions for the latter which demonstrate a sharp threshold at d=2. The cost will be defined in terms of an arbitrary increasing function of the distance. The coupling will be realized by means of a transport map ("allocation map") which assigns to each Poisson point a set ("cell") of Lebesgue measure 1. In the case of quadratic costs, all these cells will be convex polytopes.

Heat flow on Finsler manifolds

We present two approaches to the heat flow on a Finsler manifold $(M,F)$: either as gradient flow on $L^2(M,m)$ for the energy; or as gradient flow on the reverse $L^2$-Wasserstein space $\mathcal{P}_2(M)$ of probability measures on $M$ for the relative entropy. Both approaches depend on the choice of a measure $m$ on $M$ and then lead to the same nonlinear evolution semigroup. We prove $\mathcal{C}^{1,α}$-regularity for solutions to the (nonlinear) heat equation on the Finsler space $(M,F,m)$. Typically, solutions to the heat equation will not be $\mathcal{C}^2$. Moreover, we derive pointwise comparison results a la Cheeger-Yau and integrated upper Gaussian estimates a la Davies.

Monotonicity of time-dependent transportation costs and coupling by reflection

Based on a study of the coupling by reflection of diffusion processes, a new monotonicity in time of a time-dependent transportation cost between heat distribution is shown under Bakry-Emery's curvature-dimension condition on a Riemannian manifold. The cost function comes from the total variation between heat distributions on spaceforms. As a corollary, we obtain a comparison theorem for the total variation between heat distributions. In addition, we show that our monotonicity is stable under the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of the underlying space under a uniform curvature-dimension and diameter bound.

Non-contraction of heat flow on Minkowski spaces

We study contractivity properties of gradient flows for functions on normed spaces or, more generally, on Finsler manifolds. Contractivity of the flows turns out to be equivalent to a new notion of convexity for the functions. This is different from the usual convexity along geodesics in non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds. As an application, we show that the heat flow on Minkowski normed spaces other than inner product spaces is not contractive with respect to the quadratic Wasserstein distance.

A Monotone Approximation to the Wasserstein Diffusion

Von Renesse and the author (Ann. Prob. '09) developed a second order calculus on the Wasserstein space P([0,1]) of probability measures on the unit interval. The basic objects of interest had been Dirichlet form, semigroup and continuous Markov process, called Wasserstein diffusion. The goal of this paper is to derive approximations of these objects on the infinite dimensional space P([0, 1]) in terms of appropriate objects on finite dimensional spaces. In particular, we will approximate the Wasserstein diffusion in terms of interacting systems of Brownian motions.

Generalized Orlicz spaces and Wasserstein distances for convex-concave scale functions

Given a strictly increasing, continuous function $\vartheta:\R_+\to\R_+$, based on the cost functional $\int_{X\times X}\vartheta(d(x,y))\,d q(x,y)$, we define the $L^\vartheta$-Wasserstein distance $W_\vartheta(μ,ν)$ between probability measures $μ,ν$ on some metric space $(X,d)$. The function $\vartheta$ will be assumed to admit a representation $\vartheta=ϕ\circψ$ as a composition of a convex and a concave function $ϕ$ and $ψ$, resp. Besides convex functions and concave functions this includes all $\mathcal C^2$ functions. For such functions $\vartheta$ we extend the concept of Orlicz spaces, defining the metric space $L^\vartheta(X,m)$ of measurable functions $f: X\to\R$ such that, for instance, $$d_\vartheta(f,g)\le1\quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad \int_X\vartheta(|f(x)-g(x)|)\,dμ(x)\le1.$$

Ricci Bounds for Euclidean and Spherical Cones (revised/extended version)

We prove generalized lower Ricci bounds for Euclidean and spherical cones over complete Riemannian manifolds. These cones are regarded as complete metric measure spaces. In general, they will be neither manifolds nor Alexandrov spaces. We show that the Euclidean cone over an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold whose Ricci curvature is bounded from below by n-1 satisfies the curvature-dimension condition CD(0; n+1) and that the spherical cone over the same manifold fulfills the curvature-dimension condition CD(n; n+1). More generally, for each N > 1 we prove that the condition CD(N-1;N) for a weighted Riemannian space is equivalent to the condition CD(0;N +1) for its N-Euclidean cone as well as to the condition CD(N;N + 1) for its N-spherical cone.

Localization and Tensorization Properties of the Curvature-Dimension Condition for Metric Measure Spaces

This paper is devoted to the analysis of metric measure spaces satisfying locally the curvature-dimension condition CD(K,N) introduced by the second author and also studied by Lott & Villani. We prove that the local version of CD(K,N) is equivalent to a global condition CD*(K,N), slightly weaker than the (usual, global) curvature-dimension condition. This so-called reduced curvature-dimension condition CD*(K,N) has the local-to-global property. We also prove the tensorization property for CD*(K,N). As an application we conclude that the fundamental group of a metric measure space (M,d,m) is finite whenever it satisfies locally the curvature-dimension condition CD(K,N) with positive K and finite N.
