Constructing electrically charged Riemannian manifolds with minimal boundary, prescribed asymptotics, and controlled mass

In 2015, Mantoulidis and Schoen constructed $3$-dimensional asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature whose ADM mass can be made arbitrarily close to the optimal value of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality, while the intrinsic geometry of the outermost minimal surface can be ``far away'' from being round. The resulting manifolds, called extensions, are geometrically not ``close'' to a spatial Schwarzschild manifold. This suggests instability of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality. Their construction was later adapted to $n+1$ dimensions by Cabrera Pacheco and Miao. In recent papers by Alaee, Cabrera Pacheco, and Cederbaum and by Cabrera Pacheco, Cederbaum, and McCormick, a similar construction was performed for asymptotically Euclidean electrically charged Riemannian manifolds and for asymptotically hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds, respectively, obtaining $3$-dimensional extensions. This paper combines and generalizes all the aforementioned results by constructing suitable asymptotically hyperbolic or asymptotically Euclidean extensions with electric charge in $n+1$ dimensions for $n\geq2$. We study in detail the sub-extremality of these manifolds, consider the so far unstudied case of extremality in extensions with electric charge and allow more general conditions for the metric of our extensions. Besides suggesting instability of a naturally conjecturally generalized Riemannian Penrose Inequality, the constructed extensions give insights into an ad hoc generalized notion of Bartnik mass, similar to the Bartnik mass estimate for minimal surfaces proven by Mantoulidis and Schoen via their extensions, and unifying the Bartnik mass estimates in the various scenarios mentioned above.

Stability of a quasi-local positive mass theorem for graphical hypersurfaces of Euclidean space

We present a quasi-local version of the stability of the positive mass theorem. We work with the Brown--York quasi-local mass as it possesses positivity and rigidity properties, and therefore the stability of this rigidity statement can be studied. Specifically, we ask if the Brown--York mass of the boundary of some compact manifold is close to zero, must the manifold be close to a Euclidean domain in some sense? Here we consider a class of compact $n$-manifolds with boundary that can be realized as graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and establish the following. If the Brown--York mass of the boundary of such a compact manifold is small, then the manifold is close to a Euclidean hyperplane with respect to the Federer--Fleming flat distance.

Stability of graphical tori with almost nonnegative scalar curvature

By works of Schoen-Yau and Gromov-Lawson any Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and diffeomorphic to a torus is isometric to a flat torus. Gromov conjectured subconvergence of tori with respect to a weak Sobolev type metric when the scalar curvature goes to $0$. We prove flat and intrinsic flat subconvergence to a flat torus for noncollapsing sequences of $3$-dimensional tori $M_j$ that can be realized as graphs of certain functions defined over flat tori satisfying a uniform upper diameter bound and scalar curvature bounds of the form $R_{g_{M_j}} \geq -1/j$. We also show that the volume of the manifolds of the convergent subsequence converges to the volume of the limit space. We do so adapting results of Huang-Lee, Huang-Lee-Sormani and Allen-Perales-Sormani. Furthermore, our results also hold when the condition on the scalar curvature of a torus $(M, g_M)$ is replaced by a bound on the quantity $-\int_T \min\{R_{g_M},0\} d{\mbox{vol}_{g_T}}$, where $M=\mbox{graph}(f)$, $f: T \to \mathbb R$ and $(T,g_T)$ is a flat torus. Using arguments developed by Alaee, McCormick and the first named author after this work was completed, our results hold for dimensions $n \geq 4$ as well.

Higher dimensional black hole initial data with prescribed boundary metric

We obtain higher dimensional analogues of the results of Mantoulidis and Schoen in [8]. More precisely, we show that (i) any metric $g$ with positive scalar curvature on the $3$-sphere $S^3$ can be realized as the induced metric on the outermost apparent horizon of a $4$-dimensional asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, whose ADM mass can be arranged to be arbitrarily close to the optimal value specified by the Riemannian Penrose inequality; (ii) any metric $g$ with positive scalar curvature on the $n$-sphere $S^n$, with $ n \ge 4 $, such that $(S^n, g)$ isometrically embeds into $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ as a star-shaped hypersurface, can be realized as the induced metric on the outermost apparent horizon of an $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, whose ADM mass can be made to be arbitrarily close to the optimal value.
