The mean curvature flow on solvmanifolds

This work is a survey of the most relevant background material to motivate and understand the construction and classification of translating solutions to mean curvature flow on a family of solvmanifolds. We introduce the mean curvature flow and some known results in the field. In particular we explore the notion of translating solution in the Euclidean space and extensions into other Riemannian manifolds. We also include a discussion on solvmanifolds and some elements of its geometry that are relevant to our work. We finish by posing the equations that describe translating solutions to mean curvature flow on our family of 3-dimensional solvmanifolds with some additional assumptions. This project emerged at the ``Latin American and Caribbean Workshop on Mathematics and Gender'' held at Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) from May 15-20, 2022.

Volume Above Distance Below

Given a pair of metric tensors $g_1 \ge g_0$ on a Riemannian manifold, $M$, it is well known that $\operatorname{Vol}_1(M) \ge \operatorname{Vol}_0(M)$. Furthermore one has rigidity: the volumes are equal if and only if the metric tensors are the same $g_1=g_0$. Here we prove that if $g_j \ge g_0$ and $\operatorname{Vol}_1(M)\to \operatorname{Vol}_0(M)$ then $(M,g_j)$ converge to $(M,g_0)$ in the volume preserving intrinsic flat sense. Well known examples demonstrate that one need not obtain smooth, $C^0$, Lipschitz, or even Gromov-Hausdorff convergence in this setting. Our theorem may also be applied as a tool towards proving other open conjectures concerning the geometric stability of a variety of rigidity theorems in Riemannian geometry. To complete our proof, we provide a novel way of estimating the intrinsic flat distance between Riemannian manifolds which is interesting in its own right.

A generalized tetrahedral property

We present examples of metric spaces that are not Riemannian manifolds nor dimensionally homogeneous that satisfy the Tetrahedral Property. In spite of that, Euclidean cones over metric spaces with small diameter do not satisfy this property. We extend Sormani's Tetrahedral Property to a less restrictive property and prove that this generalized definition retains all the results of the original Tetrahedral Property proven by Portegies-Sormani: it provides a lower bound on the sliced filling volume and a lower bound on the volumes of balls. Thus sequences with uniform bounds on this Generalized Tetrahedral Property also have subsequences which converge in both the Gromov-Hausdorff and Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat sense to the same non-collapsed and countably rectifiable limit space.

Maximal volume entropy rigidity for $\mathsf{RCD}^*(-(N-1),N)$ spaces

For $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds $M$ with Ricci curvature bounded below by $-(n-1)$, the volume entropy is bounded above by $n-1$. If $M$ is compact, it is known that the equality holds if and only if $M$ is hyperbolic. We extend this result to $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}(-(N-1),N)$ spaces. While the upper bound is straightforward, the rigidity case is quite involved due to the lack of a smooth structure in $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}$ spaces. As an application we obtain an almost rigidity result which partially recovers a result by Cheng-Rong-Xu for Riemannian manifolds.

Stability of graphical tori with almost nonnegative scalar curvature

By works of Schoen-Yau and Gromov-Lawson any Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and diffeomorphic to a torus is isometric to a flat torus. Gromov conjectured subconvergence of tori with respect to a weak Sobolev type metric when the scalar curvature goes to $0$. We prove flat and intrinsic flat subconvergence to a flat torus for noncollapsing sequences of $3$-dimensional tori $M_j$ that can be realized as graphs of certain functions defined over flat tori satisfying a uniform upper diameter bound and scalar curvature bounds of the form $R_{g_{M_j}} \geq -1/j$. We also show that the volume of the manifolds of the convergent subsequence converges to the volume of the limit space. We do so adapting results of Huang-Lee, Huang-Lee-Sormani and Allen-Perales-Sormani. Furthermore, our results also hold when the condition on the scalar curvature of a torus $(M, g_M)$ is replaced by a bound on the quantity $-\int_T \min\{R_{g_M},0\} d{\mbox{vol}_{g_T}}$, where $M=\mbox{graph}(f)$, $f: T \to \mathbb R$ and $(T,g_T)$ is a flat torus. Using arguments developed by Alaee, McCormick and the first named author after this work was completed, our results hold for dimensions $n \geq 4$ as well.

Volumes and Limits of Manifolds with Ricci Curvature and Mean Curvature Bounds

We prove a laplacian comparison theorem in the barrier sense for the function distance to the boundary of Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, area and mean curvature of the boundary bounded above. As an application we get volume estimates, different to the ones obtained by Heintz-Karcher, and area estimates. With those estimates we prove Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat (SWIF) compactness theorems for sequences of such manifolds with uniform bounds.
