A necessary condition for Sobolev extension domains in higher dimensions

We give a necessary condition for a domain to have a bounded extension operator from $L^{1,p}(Ω)$ to $L^{1,p}(\mathbb R^n)$ for the range $1 < p < 2$. The condition is given in terms of a power of the distance to the boundary of $Ω$ integrated along the measure theoretic boundary of a set of locally finite perimeter and its extension. This generalizes a characterizing curve condition for planar simply connected domains, and a condition for $W^{1,1}$-extensions. We use the necessary condition to give a quantitative version of the curve condition. We also construct an example of an extension domain that is homeomorphic to a ball and has $n$-dimensional boundary.

Tensorization of $p$-weak differentiable structures

We consider $p$-weak differentiable structures that were recently introduced by the first and last named authors, and prove that the product of $p$-weak charts is a $p$-weak chart. This implies that the product of two spaces with a $p$-weak differentiable structure also admits a $p$-weak differentiable structure. We make partial progress on the tensorization problem of Sobolev spaces by showing an isometric embedding result. Further, we establish tensorization when one of the factors is PI.

Tensorization of quasi-Hilbertian Sobolev spaces

The tensorization problem for Sobolev spaces asks for a characterization of how the Sobolev space on a product metric measure space $X\times Y$ can be determined from its factors. We show that two natural descriptions of the Sobolev space from the literature coincide, $W^{1,2}(X\times Y)=J^{1,2}(X,Y)$, thus settling the tensorization problem for Sobolev spaces in the case $p=2$, when $X$ and $Y$ are infinitesimally quasi-Hilbertian, i.e. the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}$ admits an equivalent renorming by a Dirichlet form. This class includes in particular metric measure spaces $X,Y$ of finite Hausdorff dimension as well as infinitesimally Hilbertian spaces. More generally for $p\in (1,\infty)$ we obtain the norm-one inclusion $\|f\|_{J^{1,p}(X,Y)}\le \|f\|_{W^{1,p}(X\times Y)}$ and show that the norms agree on the algebraic tensor product $W^{1,p}(X)\otimes W^{1,p}(Y)\subset W^{1,p}(X\times Y)$. When $p=2$ and $X$ and $Y$ are infinitesimally quasi-Hilbertian, standard Dirichlet form theory yields the density of $W^{1,2}(X)\otimes W^{1,2}(Y)$ in $J^{1,2}(X,Y)$ thus implying the equality of the spaces. Our approach raises the question of the density of $W^{1,p}(X)\otimes W^{1,p}(Y)$ in $J^{1,p}(X,Y)$ in the general case.

A density problem for Sobolev spaces on Gromov hyperbolic domains

We prove that for a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ which is Gromov hyperbolic with respect to the quasihyperbolic metric, especially when $Ω$ is a finitely connected planar domain, the Sobolev space $W^{1,\,\infty}(Ω)$ is dense in $W^{1,\,p}(Ω)$ for any $1\le p<\infty$. Moreover if $Ω$ is also Jordan or quasiconvex, then $C^{\infty}(\mathbb R^n)$ is dense in $W^{1,\,p}(Ω)$ for $1\le p<\infty$.

Isometric embeddings of snowflakes into finite-dimensional Banach spaces

We consider a general notion of snowflake of a metric space by composing the distance by a nontrivial concave function. We prove that a snowflake of a metric space $X$ isometrically embeds into some finite-dimensional normed space if and only if $X$ is finite. In the case of power functions we give a uniform bound on the cardinality of $X$ depending only on the power exponent and the dimension of the vector space.

$L^\infty$ estimates in optimal mass transportation

We show that in any complete metric space the probability measures $μ$ with compact and connected support are the ones having the property that the optimal tranportation distance to any other probability measure $ν$ living on the support of $μ$ is bounded below by a positive function of the $L^\infty$ transportation distance between $μ$ and $ν$. The function giving the lower bound depends only on the lower bound of the $μ$-measures of balls centered at the support of $μ$ and on the cost function used in the optimal transport. We obtain an essentially sharp form of this function. In the case of strictly convex cost functions we show that a similar estimate holds on the level of optimal transport plans if and only if the support of $μ$ is compact and sufficiently close to being geodesic. We also study when convergence of compactly supported measures in $L^p$ transportation distance implies convergence in $L^\infty$ transportation distance. For measures with connected supports this property is characterized by uniform lower bounds on the measures of balls centered at the supports of the measures or, equivalently, by the Hausdorff-convergence of the supports.

Ahlfors-regular distances on the Heisenberg group without biLipschitz pieces

We show that the Heisenberg group is not minimal in looking down. This answers Problem 11.15 in `Fractured fractals and broken dreams' by David and Semmes, or equivalently, Question 22 and hence also Question 24 in `Thirty-three yes or no questions about mappings, measures, and metrics' by Heinonen and Semmes. The non-minimality of the Heisenberg group is shown by giving an example of an Ahlfors $4$-regular metric space $X$ having big pieces of itself such that no Lipschitz map from a subset of $X$ to the Heisenberg group has image with positive measure, and by providing a Lipschitz map from the Heisenberg group to the space $X$ having as image the whole $X$. As part of proving the above result we define a new distance on the Heisenberg group that is bounded by the Carnot-Carathéodory distance, that preserves the Ahlfors-regularity, and such that the Carnot-Carathéodory distance and the new distance are biLipschitz equivalent on no set of positive measure. This construction works more generally in any Ahlfors-regular metric space where one can make suitable shortcuts. Such spaces include for example all snowflaked Ahlfors-regular metric spaces. With the same techniques we also provide an example of a left-invariant distance on the Heisenberg group biLipschitz to the Carnot-Carathéodory distance for which no blow-up admits nontrivial dilations.

Tangent lines and Lipschitz differentiability spaces

We study the existence of tangent lines, i.e. subsets of the tangent space isometric to the real line, in tangent spaces of metric spaces. We first revisit the almost everywhere metric differentiability of Lipschitz continuous curves. We then show that any blow-up done at a point of metric differentiability and of density one for the domain of the curve gives a tangent line. Metric differentiability enjoys a Borel measurability property and this will permit us to use it in the framework of Lipschitz differentiability spaces. We show that any tangent space of a Lipschitz differentiability space contains at least $n$ distinct tangent lines, obtained as the blow-up of $n$ Lipschitz curves, where $n$ is the dimension of the local measurable chart. Under additional assumptions on the space, such as curvature lower bounds, these $n$ distinct tangent lines span an $n$-dimensional part of the tangent space.

Assouad dimension, Nagata dimension, and uniformly close metric tangents

We study the Assouad dimension and the Nagata dimension of metric spaces. As a general result, we prove that the Nagata dimension of a metric space is always bounded from above by the Assouad dimension. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of when these metric dimensions of a metric space are locally given by the dimensions of its metric tangents. Having uniformly close tangents is not sufficient. What is needed in addition is either that the tangents have dimension with uniform constants independent from the point and the tangent, or that the tangents are unique. We will apply our results to equiregular subRiemannian manifolds and show that locally their Nagata dimension equals the topological dimension.

Failure of topological rigidity results for the measure contraction property

We give two examples of metric measure spaces satisfying the measure contraction property MCP(K,N) but having different topological dimensions at different regions of the space. The first one satisfies MCP(0,3) and contains a subset isometric to $\mathbb{R}$, but does not topologically split. The second space satisfies MCP(2,3) and has diameter $π$, which is the maximal possible diameter for a space satisfying MCP(N-1,N), but is not a topological spherical suspension. The latter example gives an answer to a question by Ohta.

Euclidean spaces as weak tangents of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We show that in any infinitesimally Hilbertian $CD^*(K,N)$-space at almost every point there exists a Euclidean weak tangent, i.e. there exists a sequence of dilations of the space that converges to a Euclidean space in the pointed measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The proof follows by considering iterated tangents and the splitting theorem for infinitesimally Hilbertian $CD^*(0,N)$-spaces.

Failure of the local-to-global property for CD(K,N) spaces

Given any K and N we show that there exists a compact geodesic metric measure space satisfying locally the CD(0,4) condition but failing CD(K,N) globally. The space with this property is a suitable non convex subset of R^2 equipped with the l^\infty-norm and the Lebesgue measure. Combining many such spaces gives a (non compact) complete geodesic metric measure space satisfying CD(0,4) locally but failing CD(K,N) globally for every K and N.

Non-branching geodesics and optimal maps in strong CD(K,{\infty})-spaces

We prove that in metric measure spaces where the entropy functional is K-convex along every Wasserstein geodesic any optimal transport between two absolutely continuous measures with finite second moments lives on a non-branching set of geodesics. As a corollary we obtain that in these spaces there exists only one optimal transport plan between any two absolutely continuous measures with finite second moments and this plan is given by a map. The results are applicable in metric measure spaces having Riemannian Ricci-curvature bounded below, and in particular they hold also for Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci-curvature bounded from below by some constant.

Improved geodesics for the reduced curvature-dimension condition in branching metric spaces

In this note we show that in metric measure spaces satisfying the reduced curvature-dimension condition CD*(K,N) we always have geodesics in the Wasserstein space of probability measures that satisfy the critical convexity inequality of CD*(K,N) also for intermediate times and in addition the measures along these geodesics have an upper-bound on their densities. This upper-bound depends on the bounds for the densities of the end-point measures, the lower-bound K for the Ricci-curvature, the upper-bound N for the dimension, and on the diameter of the union of the supports of the end-point measures.

Interpolated measures with bounded density in metric spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension conditions of Sturm

We construct geodesics in the Wasserstein space of probability measure along which all the measures have an upper bound on their density that is determined by the densities of the endpoints of the geodesic. Using these geodesics we show that a local Poincaré inequality and the measure contraction property follow from the Ricci curvature bounds defined by Sturm. We also show for a large class of convex functionals that a local Poincaré inequality is implied by the weak displacement convexity of the functional.

Local Poincaré inequalities from stable curvature conditions on metric spaces

We prove local Poincaré inequalities under various curvature-dimension conditions which are stable under the measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. The first class of spaces we consider is that of weak CD(K,N) spaces as defined by Lott and Villani. The second class of spaces we study consists of spaces where we have a flow satisfying an evolution variational inequality for either the Rényi entropy functional $E_N(ρm) = -\int_X ρ^{1-1/N} dm$ or the Shannon entropy functional $E_\infty(ρm) = \int_X ρ\log ρdm$. We also prove that if the Rényi entropy functional is strongly displacement convex in the Wasserstein space, then at every point of the space we have unique geodesics to almost all points of the space.

Weakly controlled Moran constructions and iterated functions systems in metric spaces

We study the Hausdorff measures of limit sets of weakly controlled Moran constructions in metric spaces. The separation of the construction pieces is closely related to the Hausdorff measure of the corresponding limit set. In particular, we investigate different separation conditions for semiconformal iterated function systems. Our work generalizes well known results on self-similar sets in metric spaces as well as results on controlled Moran constructions in Euclidean spaces.
