Classifying the Fine Polyhedral Spectrum

In this paper, we examine an analogue of the recently solved spectrum conjecture by Fujita in the setting of Fine polyhedral adjunction theory. We present computational results for lower-dimensional polytopes, which lead to a complete classification of the highest numbers of this Fine spectrum in any dimension. Moreover, we present a classification of the Fine spectrum in dimensions one, two and (almost) three, while providing a framework for general classification results in any dimension.

METL: a modern ETL pipeline with a dynamic mapping matrix

Modern ETL streaming pipelines extract data from various sources and forward it to multiple consumers, such as data warehouses (DW) and analytical systems that leverage machine learning (ML). However, the increasing number of systems that are connected to such pipelines requires new solutions for data integration. The canonical (or common) data model (CDM) offers such an integration. It is particular useful for integrating microservice systems into ETL pipelines. (Villaca et al 2020, Oliveira et al 2019) However, a mapping to a CDM is complex. (Lemcke et al 2012) There are three complexity problems, namely the size of the required mapping matrix, the automation of updates of the matrix in response to changes in the extraction sources and the time efficiency of the mapping. In this paper, we present a new solution for these problems. More precisely, we present a new dynamic mapping matrix (DMM), which is based on permutation matrices that are obtained by block-partitioning the full mapping matrix. We show that the DMM can be used for automated updates in response to schema changes, for parallel computation in near real-time and for highly efficient compacting. For the solution, we draw on research into matrix partitioning (Quinn 2004) and dynamic networks (Haase et al 2021). The DMM has been implemented into an app called Message ETL (METL). METL is the key part of a new ETL streaming pipeline at EOS that conducts the transformation to a CDM. The ETL pipeline is based on Kafka-streams. It extracts data from more than 80 microservices with log-based Change Data Capture (CDC) with Debezium and loads the data to a DW and an ML platform. EOS is part of the Otto-Group, the second-largest e-commerce provider in Europe.

SCoT: Sense Clustering over Time: a tool for the analysis of lexical change

We present Sense Clustering over Time (SCoT), a novel network-based tool for analysing lexical change. SCoT represents the meanings of a word as clusters of similar words. It visualises their formation, change, and demise. There are two main approaches to the exploration of dynamic networks: the discrete one compares a series of clustered graphs from separate points in time. The continuous one analyses the changes of one dynamic network over a time-span. SCoT offers a new hybrid solution. First, it aggregates time-stamped documents into intervals and calculates one sense graph per discrete interval. Then, it merges the static graphs to a new type of dynamic semantic neighbourhood graph over time. The resulting sense clusters offer uniquely detailed insights into lexical change over continuous intervals with model transparency and provenance. SCoT has been successfully used in a European study on the changing meaning of `crisis'.

Toric Newton-Okounkov functions with an application to the rationality of certain Seshadri constants on surfaces

We initiate a combinatorial study of Newton-Okounkov functions on toric varieties with an eye on the rationality of asymptotic invariants of line bundles. In the course of our efforts we identify a combinatorial condition which ensures a controlled behavior of the appropriate Newton-Okounkov function on a toric surface. Our approach yields the rationality of many Seshadri constants that have not been settled before.

Levelness of Order Polytopes

Since their introduction by Stanley~\cite{StanleyOrderPoly} order polytopes have been intriguing mathematicians as their geometry can be used to examine (algebraic) properties of finite posets. In this paper, we follow this route to examine the levelness property of order polytopes. The levelness property was also introduced by Stanley~\cite{Stanley-CM-complexes} and it generalizes the Gorenstein property. This property has been recently characterized by Miyazaki~\cite{Miyazaki} for the case of order polytopes. We provide an alternative characterization using weighted digraphs. Using this characterization, we give a new infinite family of level posets and show that determining levelness is in $\operatorname{co-NP}$. This family can be used to create infinitely many examples illustrating that the levelness property can not be characterized by the $h^{\ast}$-vector. We then turn to the more general family of alcoved polytopes. We give a characterization for levelness of alcoved polytopes using the Minkowski sum. Then we study several cases when the product of two polytopes is level. In particular, we provide an example where the product of two level polytopes is not level.

Discrete Mixed Volume and Hodge-Deligne Numbers

Generalizing the famous Bernstein-Kushnirenko Theorem, Khovanskii proved in 1978 a combinatorial formula for the arithmetic genus of the compactification of a generic complete intersection associated to a family of lattice polytopes. Recently, an analogous combinatorial formula, called the discrete mixed volume, was introduced by Bihan and shown to be nonnegative. By making a footnote of Khovanskii in his paper explicit, we interpret this invariant as the (motivic) arithmetic genus of the non-compact generic complete intersection associated to the family of lattice polytopes.

Convex-normal (pairs of) polytopes

In 2012 Gubeladze (Adv.\ Math.\ 2012) introduced the notion of k-convex-normal polytopes to show that integral polytopes all of whose edges are longer than 4d(d+1) have the integer decomposition property. In the first part of this paper we show that for lattice polytopes there is no difference between k- and (k+1)-convex-normality (for k >= 3) and improve the bound to 2d(d+1). In the second part we extend the definition to pairs of polytopes and show that for rational polytopes P and Q, where the normal fan of P is a refinement of the normal fan of Q, if every edge e_P of P is at least d times as long as the corresponding edge e_Q of Q, then (P+Q) \cap \Z^d = (P\cap \Z^d) + (Q \cap \Z^d).

Few smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points

We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12 lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the number of lattice points on edges to prove finiteness.

Integer decomposition property of dilated polytopes

Let $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ be an integral convex polytope of dimension $d$ and write $k \mathcal{P}$, where $k = 1, 2, \ldots$, for dilations of $\mathcal{P}$. We say that $\mathcal{P}$ possesses the integer decomposition property if, for any integer $k = 1, 2, \ldots$ and for any $α\in k \mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^N$, there exist $α_{1}, \ldots, α_k$ belonging to $\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^N$ such that $α= α_1 + \cdots + α_k$. A fundamental question is to determine the integers $k > 0$ for which the dilated polytope $k\mathcal{P}$ possesses the integer decomposition property. In the present paper, combinatorial invariants related to the integer decomposition property of dilated polytopes will be proposed and studied.

Polyhedral adjunction theory

In this paper we give a combinatorial view on the adjunction theory of toric varieties. Inspired by classical adjunction theory of polarized algebraic varieties we define two convex-geometric notions: the Q-codegree and the nef value of a rational polytope P. We define the adjoint polytope P^(s) as the set of those points in P, whose lattice distance to every facet of P is at least s. We prove a structure theorem for lattice polytopes P with high Q-codegree. If P^(s) is empty for some s < 2/(dim(P)+2), then the lattice polytope P has lattice width one. This has consequences in Ehrhart theory and on polarized toric varieties with dual defect. Moreover, we illustrate how classification results in adjunction theory can be translated into new classification results for lattice polytopes.

Permutation Polytopes of Cyclic Groups

We investigate the combinatorics and geometry of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic permutation groups, i.e., the convex hulls of cyclic groups of permutation matrices. We give formulas for their dimension and vertex degree. In the situation that the generator of the group consists of at most two orbits, we can give a complete combinatorial description of the associated permutation polytope. In the case of three orbits the facet structure is already quite complex. For a large class of examples we show that there exist exponentially many facets.

Linear Systems on Tropical Curves

A tropical curve Γis a metric graph with possibly unbounded edges, and tropical rational functions are continuous piecewise linear functions with integer slopes. We define the complete linear system |D| of a divisor D on a tropical curve Γanalogously to the classical counterpart. We investigate the structure of |D| as a cell complex and show that linear systems are quotients of tropical modules, finitely generated by vertices of the cell complex. Using a finite set of generators, |D| defines a map from Γto a tropical projective space, and the image can be extended to a tropical curve of degree equal to °(D). The tropical convex hull of the image realizes the linear system |D| as a polyhedral complex. We show that curves for which the canonical divisor is not very ample are hyperelliptic. We also show that the Picard group of a \Q-tropical curve is a direct limit of critical groups of finite graphs converging to the curve.

Cayley decompositions of lattice polytopes and upper bounds for h^*-polynomials

We give an effective upper bound on the h^*-polynomial of a lattice polytope in terms of its degree and leading coefficient, confirming a conjecture of Batyrev. We deduce this bound as a consequence of a strong Cayley decomposition theorem which says, roughly speaking, that any lattice polytope with a large multiple that has no interior lattice points has a nontrivial decomposition as a Cayley sum of polytopes of smaller dimension. In an appendix, we interpret this result in terms of adjunction theory for toric varieties.

On permutation polytopes

A permutation polytope is the convex hull of a group of permutation matrices. In this paper we investigate the combinatorics of permutation polytopes and their faces. As applications we completely classify permutation polytopes in dimensions 2,3,4, and the corresponding permutation groups up to a suitable notion of equivalence. We also provide a list of combinatorial types of possibly occuring faces of permutation polytopes up to dimension four.
