Dense Baryonic Matter in Hidden Local Symmetry Approach: Half-Skyrmions and Nucleon Mass

Hadron properties in dense medium are treated in a unified way in a skyrmion model constructed with an effective Lagrangian, in which the rho and omega vector mesons are introduced as hidden gauge bosons, valid up to O(p^4) terms in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. All the low energy constants - apart from f_pi and m_rho - are fixed by the master formula derived from the relation between 5-D hQCD and 4-D HLS. This allows one to pin down the density n_1/2 at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions, bringing in a drastic change in the EoS of dense matter. We find that the U(1) field that figures in the CS term in the hQCD action or equivalently the omega field in the hWZ term in the dimensionally reduced HLS action plays a crucial role in the half-skyrmion phase. The importance of the omega degree of freedom may be connected to what happens in the instanton structure of elementary baryon noticed in hQCD. The most striking and intriguing in what is found in the model is that f_pi that smoothly drops with increasing density in the skyrmion phase stops decreasing at n_1/2 and remains nearly constant in the half-skyrmion phase. In accordance with the large N_c consideration, the baryon mass also stays non-scaling in the half-skyrmion phase. This feature which is reminiscent of the parity-doublet baryon model with a chirally invariant mass m_0 is supported by the nuclear EFT with the parameters of the Lagrangian scaling modified at the skyrmion-half-skyrmion phase transition. It also matches with one-loop RG analysis based on HLS. A link between a non-vanishing m_0 and the origin of nucleon mass distinctive from dynamically generated mass is suggested. We briefly discuss the possible consequences of the topology change found in this paper on the forthcoming experiments at the RIB machines under construction.

The soliton-soliton interaction in the Chiral Dilaton Model

We study the interaction between two B = 1 states in the Chiral Dilaton Model where baryons are described as non-topological solitons arising from the interaction of chiral mesons and quarks. By using the hedgehog solution for the B = 1 states we construct, via a product ansatz, three possible B = 2 configurations to analyse the role of the relative orientation of the hedgehog quills in the dynamics of the soliton-soliton interaction and investigate the behaviour of these solutions in the range of long/intermediate distance. One of the solutions is quite binding due to the dynamics of the π and σ fields at intermediate distance and should be used for nuclear matter studies. Since the product ansatz breaks down as the two solitons get close, we explore the short range distance regime with a model that describes the interaction via a six-quark bag ansatz. We calculate the interaction energy as a function of the inter-soliton distance and show that for small separations the six quarks bag, assuming a hedgehog structure, provides a stable bound state that at large separations connects with a special configuration coming from the product ansatz.

Hidden Local Symmetry and Infinite Tower of Vector Mesons for Baryons

In an effort to access dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars in a unified framework that handles both single baryon and multibaryon systems on the same footing, we first address a holographic dual action for a single baryon focusing on the role of the infinite tower of vector mesons deconstructed from five dimensions. To leading order in 't Hooft coupling $λ=N_c g_{\rm YM}^2$, one has the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Skyrmion that results when the warping of the bulk background and the Chern-Simons term in the Sakai-Sugimoto D4/D8-${\bar{\rm D8}}$ model are ignored. The infinite tower was found by Sutcliffe to induce flow to a conformal theory, i.e., the BPS. We compare this structure to that of the SS model consisting of a 5D Yang-Mills action in warped space and the Chern-Simons term in which higher vector mesons are integrated out while preserving hidden local symmetry and valid to $O(λ^0)$ and $O(p^4)$ in the chiral counting. We point out the surprisingly important role of the $ω$ meson that figures in the Chern-Simons term that encodes chiral anomaly in the baryon structure and that may be closely tied to short-range repulsion in nuclear interactions.

The baryon number two system in the Chiral Soliton Model

We study the interaction between two B = 1 states in a Chiral Soliton Model where baryons are described as non-topological solitons. By using the hedgehog solution for the B = 1 states we construct three possible B = 2 configurations to analyze the role of the relative orientation of the hedgehog quills in the dynamics. The strong dependence of the intersoliton interaction on these relative orientations reveals that studies of dense hadronic matter using this model should take into account their implications.

Half-Skyrmions, Tensor Forces and Symmetry Energy in Cold Dense Matter

In a previous article, the 4D half-skyrmion (or 5D dyonic salt) structure of dense baryonic matter described in crystalline configuration in the large $N_c$ limit was shown to impact nontrivially on how anti-kaons behave in compressed nuclear matter with a possible implication on an "ice-9" phenomenon of deeply bound kaonic matter and condensed kaons in compact stars. We extend the analysis to make a further prediction on the scaling properties of hadrons that have a surprising effect on the nuclear tensor forces, the symmetry energy and hence on the phase structure at high density. We treat this problem relying on certain topological structure of chiral solitons. Combined with what can be deduced from hidden local symmetry for hadrons in dense medium and the "soft" dilatonic degree of freedom associated with the trace anomaly of QCD, we uncover a novel structure of chiral symmetry in the "supersoft" symmetry energy that can influence the structure of neutron stars.

Kaons in Dense Half-Skyrmion Matter

Dense hadronic matter at low temperature is expected to be in crystal and at high density make a transition to a {\em chirally restored but color-confined} state which is a novel phase hitherto unexplored. This phase transition is predicted in both skyrmion matter in 4D and instanton matter in 5D, the former in the form of half-skyrmions and the latter in the form of half-instantons or dyons. We predict that when $K^-$'s are embedded in this half-skyrmion or half-instanton (dyonic) matter which may be reached not far above the normal density, there arises an enhanced attraction from the soft dilaton field figuring for the trace anomaly of QCD and the Wess-Zumino term. This attraction may have relevance for a possible strong binding of anti-kaons in dense nuclear matter and for kaon condensation in neutron-star matter. Such kaon property in the half-skyrmion phase is highly non-perturbarive and may not be accessible by low-order chiral perturbation theory. Relevance of the half-skyrmion or dyonic matter to compact stars is discussed.

Skyrmion approach to finite density and temperature

We review an approach, developed over the past few years, to describe hadronic matter at finite density and temperature, whose underlying theoretical framework is the Skyrme model, an effective low energy theory rooted in large $N_c$ QCD. In this approach matter is described by various crystal structures of skyrmions, classical topological solitons carrying baryon number, from which conventional baryons appear by quantization. Chiral and scale symmetries play a crucial role in the dynamics as described by pion, dilaton and vector meson degrees of freedom. When compressed or heated skyrmion matter describes a rich phase diagram which has strong connections with the confinement/deconfinement phase transition.

Skyrmions at finite density and temperature: the chiral phase transition

The Skyrme model, an effective low energy theory rooted in large $N_c$ QCD, has been applied to the study of dense matter. Matter is described by various crystal structures of skyrmions. When this system is heated, the dominating thermal degrees of freedom are the fluctuating pions. Taking these mechanisms jointly produces a description of the chiral phase transition leading to the conventional phase diagram with critical temperatures and densities in agreement with expected values.

A Unified Approach to High Density: Pion Fluctuations in Skyrmion Matter

As the first in a series of systematic work on dense hadronic matter, we study the properties of the pion in dense medium using Skyrme's effective Lagrangian as a unified theory of the hadronic interactions applicable in the large $N_c$ limit. Dense baryonic matter is described as the ground state of a skyrmion matter which appears in two differentiated phases as a function of matter density: i) at high densities as a stable cubic-centered (CC) half-skyrmion crystal; ii) at low densities as an unstable face-centered cubic (FCC) skyrmion crystal. We substitute the latter by a stable inhomogeneous phase of lumps of dense matter, which represents a naive Maxwell construction of the phase transition. This baryonic dense medium serves as a background for the pions whose effective {\em in-medium} Lagrangian we construct by allowing time-dependent quantum fluctuations on the classical dense matter field. We find that the same parameter which describes the phase transition for baryonic matter, the expectation value of the $σ$ field, also describes the phase transition for the dynamics of the {\em in-medium} pion. Thus, the structure of the baryonic ground state $crucially$ determines the behavior of the pion in the medium. As matter density increases, $<σ>$ decreases, a phenomenon which we interpret to signal, in terms of the parameters of the effective pion Lagrangian $f_π^*$ and $m_π^*$, the restoration of chiral symmetry at high density. Our calculation shows also the important role played by the higher powers in the density as it increases and chiral symmetry is being restored. This feature is likely to be generic at high density although our ground state may not be the true ground state.

Lyapunov Exponent and the Solid-Fluid Phase Transition

We study changes in the chaotic properties of a many-body system undergoing a solid-fluid phase transition. To do this, we compute the temperature dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponents $λ_{max}$ for both two- and three-dimensional periodic systems of $N$-particles for various densities. The particles interact through a soft-core potential. The two-dimensional system exhibits an apparent second-order phase transition as indicated by a $λ$-shaped peak in the specific heat. The first derivative of $λ_{max}$ with respect to the temperature shows a peak at the same temperature. The three-dimensional system shows jumps, in both system energy and $λ_{max}$, at the same temperature, suggesting a first-order phase transition. Relaxation phenomena in the phase-transition region are analyzed by using the local time averages.

Heavy Quark Symmetry and the Skyrme Model

We present a consistent way of describing heavy baryons containing a heavy quark as bound states of an $SU(2)$ soliton and heavy mesons. The resulting mass formula reveals the heavy quark symmetry explicitly. By extending the model to the orbitally excited states, we establish the generic structure of the heavy baryon spectrum. As anticipated from the heavy quark spin symmetry, the $c$-factor denoting the hyperfine splitting constant {\em vanishes} and the baryons with the same angular momentum of light degrees of freedom form degenerate doublets. This approach is also applied to the pentaquark exotic baryons, where the conventional $c$-factor plays no more a role of the hyperfine constant. After diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of order $N_c^{-1}$, we get the degenerate doublets, which implies the vanishing of genuine hyperfine splitting.

Heavy-Quark Symmetry and Skyrmions

We review recent development on combining heavy-quark symmetry and chiral symmetry in the skyrmion structure of the baryons containing one or more heavy quarks, c (charmed) and b (bottom). We describe two approaches: One going from the chiral symmetry regime of light quarks to the heavy-quark symmetry regime which will be referred to as ``bottom-up" approach and the other going down from the heavy-quark limit to the realistic finite-mass regime which will be referred to as ``top-down." A possible hidden connection between the two symmetry limits is suggested. This review is based largely on the work done -- some unpublished -- by the authors since several years.
