Mixing effects on 1S and 2S state heavy mesons in the light-front quark model

The mass spectra and wave functions of both $1S$ and $2S$ state heavy pseudoscalar ($P$) and vector ($V$) mesons are analyzed within the light-front quark model. Important empirical constraints employed in our analysis of the mass spectra and wave functions are the experimental mass-gap relation, $ΔM_P > ΔM_V$, where $ΔM_{P(V)}=M^{2S}_{P(V)}-M^{1S}_{P(V)}$ and the hierarchy of the decay constants, $f_{1S}>f_{2S}$, between $1S$ and $2S$ meson states. We maintain the orthogonality of the trial wave functions of the $1S$ and $2S$ states in our variational calculation of the Hamiltonian with the Coulomb plus confining potentials and treat the hyperfine interaction perturbatively for the heavy-heavy and heavy-light $P$ and $V$ mesons due to the nature of the heavy quark symmetry. Realizing that the empirical constraints cannot be satisfied without mixing of the $1S$ and $2S$ states, we find the lower bound of the mixing angle $θ$ between $1S$ and $2S$ states as $θ_c = {\rm cot}^{-1}(2\sqrt{6})/2\simeq 6^{\circ}$ and obtain the optimum value of the mixing angle around $12^\circ$ to cover both the charm and bottom flavors of the heavy quark. The mixing effects are found to be more significant to the $2S$ state mesons than to the $1S$ state mesons. The properties of $1S$ and $2S$ state mesons including the mass spectra, decay constants, twist-2 distribution amplitudes, and electromagnetic form factors are computed. Our results are found to be in a good agreement with the available data and lattice simulations. In particular, the $2S$ state pseudoscalar $D_s$ meson is predicted to have a mass of $2600$ MeV, which is very close to the mass of the newly discovered $D_{s0}(2590)^+$ meson by the LHCb Collaboration. This supports the interpretation of the observed state as a radial excitation of the $D^+_s$ meson.

Models of $J/Ψ$ photo-production reactions on the nucleon

The $J/Ψ$ photo-production reactions on the nucleon can provide information on the roles of gluons in determining the $J/Ψ$-nucleon ($J/Ψ$-N) interactions and the structure of the nucleon. The information on the $J/Ψ$-N interactions is needed to test lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations and to understand the nucleon resonances such as $N^*(P_c)$ recently reported by the LHCb Collaboration. In addition, it is also needed to investigate the production of nuclei with hidden charms and to extract the gluon distributions in nuclei. The main purpose of this article is to review six reaction models of $γ+ p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ reactions which have been and can be applied to analyze the data from Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The formulae for each model are given and used to obtain the results to show the extent to which the available data can be described. The models presented include the Pomeron-exchange model of Donnachie and Landshoff (Pom-DL) and its extensions to include $J/Ψ$-N potentials extracted from LQCD (Pom-pot) and to also use the constituent quark model (CQM) to account for the quark substructure of $J/Ψ$ (Pom-CQM). The other three models are developed from applying the perturbative QCD approach to calculate the two-gluon exchange using the generalized parton distribution (GPD) of the nucleon (GPD-based), two- and three-gluon exchanges using the parton distribution of the nucleon ($2g+3g$), and the exchanges of scalar ($0^{++}$) and tensor ($2^{++}$) glueballs within the holographic formulation (holog). The results of investigating the excitation of the nucleon resonances $N^*(P_c)$ in the $γ+ p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ reactions are also given.

Strong decays of multi-strangeness baryon resonances in the quark model

Decay properties of multi-strangeness $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryon resonances are investigated within the constituent quark model by including relativistic corrections. The strong decay widths of various $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are computed and tested for internal quark configurations to pin down their spin-parity ($J^P$) quantum numbers and internal structures. We found that the Roper-like resonances in the multi-strangeness sector have large decay widths bearing resemblances to their siblings in light and heavy baryon sectors. In addition, we obtained the decay ratio for the $Ω(2012)$ as $Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar{K} π)} / Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar{K})}=4.5\%$, which is consistent with the experimental data when $J^P=3/2^-$ is assigned. This observation holds the possibility that the $Ω(2012)$ could naturally be explained as a three-quark state in the quark model. The decays of other low-lying $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are systematically analyzed, which would be useful to unveil the structure of these resonances in future experiments.

Analysis of virtual meson production in solvable (1+1) dimensional scalar field theory

Light-front time-ordered amplitudes are investigated in the virtual scalar meson production process in (1+1) dimensions using the solvable scalar field theory extended from the conventional Wick-Cutkosky model. There is only one Compton form factor (CFF) in the (1+1) dimensional computation of the virtual meson production process, and we compute both the real and imaginary parts of the CFF for the entire kinematic regions of $Q^2>0$ and $t<0$. We then analyze the contribution of each and every light-front time-ordered amplitude to the CFF as a function of $Q^2$ and $t$. In particular, we discuss the significance of the "cat's ears" contributions for gauge invariance and the validity of the "handbag dominance" in the formulation of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) function used typically in the analysis of deeply virtual meson production processes. We explicitly derive the GPD from the "handbag" light-front time-ordered amplitudes in the $-t/Q^2<<1$ limit and verify that the integrations of the GPD over the light-front longitudinal momentum fraction for the DGLAP and ERBL regions correspond to the valence and nonvalence contributions of the electromagnetic form factor that we have recently reported [Phys. Rev. D $\textbf{103}$, 076002 (2021)]. We also discuss the correspondence of the GPD to the parton distribution function for the analysis of the deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering process and the utility of the new light-front longitudinal spatial variable $\tilde{z}$.

Charmed hadron production in an improved quark coalescence model

We study the production of charmed hadrons $D^{0}$ and $Λ_c^+$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using an improved quark coalescence model. In particular, we extend the usual coalescence model by letting a produced hadron to have the same velocity as the center-of-mass velocity of coalesced constituent quarks during hadronization to take into account the effect of collective flow in produced quark-gluon plasma. This results in a shift of charmed resonances of higher masses to larger transverse momenta ($p_T^{}$). Requiring all charm quarks of very low $p_T^{}$ to be converted to hadrons via coalescence and letting charm quarks not undergoing coalescence to hadronize by independent fragmentation, we obtain a good description of the measured yield ratio $Λ_c^+/D^0$ as a function of $p_T^{}$ in $\text{Au} + \text{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}^{}=200$~GeV by the STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Effects of medium modifications of nucleon form factors on neutrino scattering in dense matter

Effects of the in-medium modifications of nucleon form factors on neutrino interaction in dense matter are presented by considering both the weak and electromagnetic interactions of neutrinos with the constituents of the matter. A relativistic mean field and the quark-meson coupling models are respectively adopted for the effective nucleon mass and in-medium nucleon form factors. We calculate the cross-section of neutrino scattering as well as the neutrino mean free path. We found the cross sections of neutrino scattering in cold nuclear medium decreases when the in-medium modifications of the nucleon weak and electromagnetic form factors are taken into account. This reduction results in the enhancement of the neutrino mean free path, in particular at the baryon density of around a few times of the normal nuclear matter density.

Pion structure in a nuclear medium

The structure and electroweak properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter are presented in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The pion is described as a bound state of a dressed quark-antiquark pair governed by the Bethe-Salpeter equation. For the in-medium current-light-quark properties we use the quark-meson coupling model, which describes successfully the properties of hadron in a nuclear medium. We found that the light-quark condensates, the pion decay constant and pion-quark coupling constant decrease with increasing nuclear matter density. We then predict the modifications of the charge radius of the charged pion in nuclear matter.

Nuclear isospin asymmetry in $α$ decays of heavy nuclei

The effects of nuclear isospin asymmetry on $α$ decay lifetimes of heavy nuclei are investigated within various phenomenological models of nuclear potential for the $α$ particle. We consider the widely used simple square well potential and Woods-Saxon potential, and modify them by including an isospin asymmetry term. We then suggest a model for the potential of the $α$ particle motivated by a microscopic phenomenological approach of the Skyrme force model, which naturally introduce the isospin dependent form of the nuclear potential for the $α$ particle. The empirical $α$ decay lifetime formula of Viola and Seaborg is also modified to include isospin asymmetry effects. The obtained $α$ decay half-lives are in good agreement with the experimental data and we find that including the nuclear isospin effects somehow improves the theoretical results for $α$ decay half-lives. The implications of these results are discussed and the predictions on the $α$ decay lifetimes of superheavy elements are also presented.

$\bar{K} + N \to K + Ξ$ reaction and $S=-1$ hyperon resonances

The $\bar{K} + N \to K + Ξ$ reaction is studied for center-of-momentum energies ranging from threshold to 3 GeV in an effective Lagrangian approach that includes the hyperon $s$- and $u$-channel contributions as well as a phenomenological contact amplitude. The latter accounts for the rescattering term in the scattering equation and possible short-range dynamics not included explicitly in the model. Existing data are well reproduced and three above-the-threshold resonances were found to be required to describe the data, namely, the $Λ(1890)$, $Σ(2030)$, and $Σ(2250)$. For the latter resonance we have assumed the spin-parity of $J^P=5/2^-$ and a mass of 2265 MeV. The $Σ(2030)$ resonance is crucial in achieving a good reproduction of not only the measured total and differential cross sections, but also the recoil polarization asymmetry. More precise data are required before a more definitive statement can be made about the other two resonances, in particular, about the $Σ(2250)$ resonance that is introduced to describe a small bump structure observed in the total cross section of $K^- + p \to K^+ + Ξ^-$. The present analysis also reveals a peculiar behavior of the total cross section data in the threshold energy region in $K^- + p \to K^+ + Ξ^-$, where the $P$- and $D$-waves dominate instead of the usual $S$-wave. Predictions for the target-recoil asymmetries of the $\bar{K} + N \to K + Ξ$ reaction are also presented.

A study of the almost sequential mechanism of true ternary fission

We consider the collinear ternary fission which is a sequential ternary decay with a very short time between the ruptures of two necks connecting the middle cluster of the ternary nuclear system and outer fragments. In particular, we consider the case where the Coulomb field of the first massive fragment separated during the first step of the fission produces a lower pre-scission barrier in the second step of the residual part of the ternary system. In this case, we obtain a probability of about $10^{-3}$ for the yield of massive clusters such as \nuclide[70]{Ni}, \nuclide[80-82]{Ge}, \nuclide[86]{Se}, and \nuclide[94]{Kr} in the ternary fission of \nuclide[252]{Cf}. These products appear together with the clusters having mass numbers of $A = 132$--$140$. The results show that the yield of a heavy cluster such as \nuclide[68-70]{Ni} would be followed by a product of $A = 138$--$148$ with a large probability as observed in the experimental data obtained with the FOBOS spectrometer at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The third product is not observed. The landscape of the potential energy surface shows that the configuration of the Ni + Ca + Sn decay channel is lower about 12 MeV than that of the Ca + Ni + Sn channel. This leads to the fact, that the yield of Ni and Sn is large. The analysis on the dependence of the velocity of the middle fragment on mass numbers of the outer products leads to the conclusion that, in the collinear tripartition channel of \nuclide[252]{Cf}, the middle cluster has a very small velocity, which does not allow it to be found in experiments.

Investigation of the $nnΛ$ bound state in pionless effective theory

The possibility of an $nnΛ$ bound state is investigated in the framework of pionless effective field theory at leading order. A system of coupled integral equations are constructed in the spin-isospin basis, of which numerical solutions are investigated. In particular, we make use of the limit cycle behavior, i.e., cyclic singularities of coupled integral equations of the system, which would be associated with the formation of a three-body bound state, so-called the Efimov state, in the unitary limit. Furthermore, we find that, when the sharp momentum cutoff introduced in the integral equations is taken significantly larger than the hard scale of the effective theory, the coupling of a three-body contact interaction becomes cyclically singular indicating the onset of Efimov-like bound state formation. However, the paucity of empirical information to determine the parameters of the theory precludes a definitive conclusion on the existence of such a bound state. As a simple test of the feasibility of the $nnΛ$ bound system in nature, we explore the cutoff dependence of the theory, and uncertainties of the present study are discussed as well.

Non-perturbative collisional energy loss of heavy quarks in quark-gluon plasma

We suggest a new mechanism for the energy loss of fast heavy quarks in quark-gluon plasma. This mechanism is based on pion production caused by the anomalous chromomagnetic quark-gluon-pion interaction induced by strong topological fluctuations of the gluon fields represented by instantons. We found that this mechanism gives a considerable contribution to the collisional energy loss of a heavy quark in quark-gluon plasma, which shows a nontrivial role of nonperturbative phenomena in strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma.

Peculiarities of quasifission reactions in heavy ion collisions

The probability of the formation and decay of a dinuclear system is investigated for a wide range of relative orbital angular momentum values. The mass and angular distributions of the quasifission fragments are studied to understand the reaction mechanisms of the heavy ion collision of $^{78}$Kr(10$A$ MeV) + $^{40}$Ca within dinuclear system model. The quasifission products are found to contribute to the mass-symmetric region of the mass distribution in collisions with a large orbital angular momentum. The analysis of mass and angular distributions of quasifission fragments shows the possibility of the $180^\circ$ rotation of the system so that projectile-like products can be observed in the forward hemisphere with large cross sections, which can explain the phenomenon observed recently in the ISODEC experiment.

${}_{ΛΛ}^{4}$H in halo effective field theory

The ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\ \ 4}$H bound state and the $S$-wave hypertriton(${}_Λ^{ \, 3}$H)-$Λ$ scattering in spin singlet and triplet channels below the hypertriton breakup momentum scale are studied in halo/cluster effective field theory at leading order by treating the ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\ \ 4}$H system as a three-cluster ($Λ$-$Λ$-deuteron) system. In the spin singlet channel, the amplitude is insensitive to the cutoff parameter $Λ_c$ introduced in the integral equation, and we find that there is no bound state. In this case, the scattering length of the hypertriton-$Λ$ scattering is found to be $a_0^{} = 16.0\pm 3.0$ fm. In the spin triplet channel, however, the amplitude obtained by the coupled integral equations is sensitive to $Λ_c$, and we introduce the three-body contact interaction $g_1^{} (Λ_c)$. After phenomenologically fixing $g_1^{} (Λ_c)$, we find that the correlation between the two-$Λ$ separation energy $B_{ΛΛ}$ from the $_{ΛΛ}^{\ \ 4}$H bound state and the scattering length $a_{ΛΛ}^{}$ of the $S$-wave $Λ$-$Λ$ scattering is significantly sensitive to the value of $Λ_c$.

${}^{\ \ \ 6}_{ΛΛ} He$ in cluster effective field theory

The hypernucleus $\nuclide[6][ΛΛ]{He}$ is studied as a three-body ($ΛΛα$) cluster system in cluster effective field theory at leading order. We find that the three-body contact interaction exhibits the limit cycle when the cutoff in the integral equations is sent to the asymptotic limit, and thus it should be promoted to leading order. We also derive a determination equation of the limit cycle which reproduces the numerically obtained limit cycle. We then study the correlations between the double $Λ$ separation energy $B_{ΛΛ}^{}$ of $\nuclide[6][ΛΛ]{He}$ and the scattering length $a_{ΛΛ}^{}$ of the $S$-wave $ΛΛ$ scattering. The role of the scale in this approach is also discussed.

Four-quark structure of the excited states of heavy mesons

We propose a four-quark structure for some of the excited states of heavy mesons containing a single charm or bottom quark. The four-quark wave functions are constructed based on a diquark-antidiquark form under the constraint that they form an antitriplet $\bar{\bf{3}}_f$ in $\mbox{SU(3)}_f$, which seems to be realized in some of the excited states listed in Particle Data Group. Depending on the structure of antidiquark, we construct two possible models for its wave functions: Model I) the antidiquark is symmetric in flavor ($\bar{\bf{6}}_f$) and antisymmetric in color ($\bf{3}_c$) and Model II) the antidiquark is antisymmetric in flavor ($\bf{3}_f$) and symmetric in color ($\bar{\bf{6}}_c$). To test phenomenological relevance of these wave functions, we calculate the mass differences among the excited states of spin $J=0,1,2$ using color-spin interactions. The four-quark wave functions based on Model~I is found to reproduce the observed mass of the excited states of heavy mesons. Also, our four-quark model provides an interesting phenomenology relating to the decay widths of the excited states. To further pursue the possibility of the four-quark structure, we make a few predictions for open charm and open bottom states that may be discovered in future experiments. Most of them are expected to have broad widths, which would make them difficult to be identified experimentally. However, one resonance with $J=1$ containing bottom and strange quarks is expected to appear as a sharp peak with its mass around $B^{\bar s}_{1N} \sim 5753$~MeV. Confirmation of the existence of such states in future experiments will shed light on our understanding of the structure of heavy meson excited states.

Hadronic description for Omega baryon photoproduction

In the present work, we investigate subsequential production of three kaons and $Ω^-$ baryon based on an effective Lagrangian approach. We only consider the intermediate states with the light mass baryon to suggest the minimum of the total cross section. Coupling constants for verteces of meson-octet baryons are fixed from the empirical data and/or quark models together with SU(3) symmetry considerations and these for meson-decouplet are predicted not only quark model but also Chiral-quark soliton model calculation. Gauge invariance of the resulting amplitude is maintained by introducing the contact currents by extending the gauge-invariant approach of Haberzettl for one-meson photoproduction to two-meson photoproduction.

Model-independent aspects of the reaction $\bar{K} + N \to K + Ξ$

Various model-independent aspects of the $\bar{K} N \to K Ξ$ reaction are investigated, starting from the determination of the most general structure of the reaction amplitude for $Ξ$ baryons with $J^P=\frac12^\pm$ and $\frac32^\pm$ and the observables that allow a complete determination of these amplitudes. Polarization observables are constructed in terms of spin-density matrix elements. Reflection symmetry about the reaction plane is exploited, in particular, to determine the parity of the produced $Ξ$ in a model-independent way. In addition, extending the work of Biagi $\mathrm{\textit{et al. } [Z. Phys.\ C \textbf{34}, 175 (1987)]}$, a way is presented of determining simultaneously the spin and parity of the ground state of $Ξ$ baryon as well as those of the excited $Ξ$ states.

Production cross section of neutron-rich isotopes with radioactive and stable beams

The production cross section of neutron-rich isotopes of Ca, Zn, Te, Xe, and Pt are predicted in the diffusive multi-nucleon transfer reactions with stable and radioactive beams. With these isotopes one can treat the neutron shell evolution beyond N = 28, 50, 82, and 126. Because of the small cross sections, the production of nuclei near the neutron drip line requires the optimal choice of reaction partners and bombarding energies.

Skyrmions with vector mesons revisited

In order to develop a model that can describe both a single baryon and multi-baryon systems on the same footing, we re-investigate the Skyrme model in a chiral Lagrangian derived from the hidden local symmetry (HLS) up to $O(p^4)$ including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. We use the master formulas that connect the parameters of the HLS Lagrangian and a class of holographic QCD models, which provides a controllable way to determine the low-energy constants of the Lagrangian once the pion decay constant and the vector meson mass are given. Therefore, this model allows us to study the role of vector mesons in the skyrmion structure. We find that the $ρ$ and $ω$ vector mesons have different roles in the skyrmion structure and that the $ω$ meson has an important role in the properties of the nucleon.

Dense Baryonic Matter in Hidden Local Symmetry Approach: Half-Skyrmions and Nucleon Mass

Hadron properties in dense medium are treated in a unified way in a skyrmion model constructed with an effective Lagrangian, in which the rho and omega vector mesons are introduced as hidden gauge bosons, valid up to O(p^4) terms in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. All the low energy constants - apart from f_pi and m_rho - are fixed by the master formula derived from the relation between 5-D hQCD and 4-D HLS. This allows one to pin down the density n_1/2 at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions, bringing in a drastic change in the EoS of dense matter. We find that the U(1) field that figures in the CS term in the hQCD action or equivalently the omega field in the hWZ term in the dimensionally reduced HLS action plays a crucial role in the half-skyrmion phase. The importance of the omega degree of freedom may be connected to what happens in the instanton structure of elementary baryon noticed in hQCD. The most striking and intriguing in what is found in the model is that f_pi that smoothly drops with increasing density in the skyrmion phase stops decreasing at n_1/2 and remains nearly constant in the half-skyrmion phase. In accordance with the large N_c consideration, the baryon mass also stays non-scaling in the half-skyrmion phase. This feature which is reminiscent of the parity-doublet baryon model with a chirally invariant mass m_0 is supported by the nuclear EFT with the parameters of the Lagrangian scaling modified at the skyrmion-half-skyrmion phase transition. It also matches with one-loop RG analysis based on HLS. A link between a non-vanishing m_0 and the origin of nucleon mass distinctive from dynamically generated mass is suggested. We briefly discuss the possible consequences of the topology change found in this paper on the forthcoming experiments at the RIB machines under construction.

QCD sum rule study on the $f_0(980)$ structure as a pure $K \bar{K}$ bound state

We perform a QCD sum rule analysis for the scalar $f_0(980)$ meson to investigate whether it can be described as a pure bound state of $K$ and $\bar{K}$ mesons. Based on the QCD sum rule with the operators of up to dimension 10 within the operator product expansion, we found that it is hard to treat the $f_0(980)$ as a simple $K\bar{K}$ bound state, which implies that the $f_0(980)$ scalar meson has more complicated structure being mixed states of various configurations.

Skyrmions with vector mesons in the hidden local symmetry approach

The roles of light $ρ$ and $ω$ vector mesons in the Skyrmion are investigated in a chiral Lagrangian derived from the hidden local symmetry (HLS) up to $O(p^4)$ including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino (hWZ) terms. We write a general "master formula" that allows us to determine the parameters of the HLS Lagrangian from a class of holographic QCD models valid at large $N_c$ and $λ$ ('t Hooft constant) limit by integrating out the infinite towers of vector and axial-vector mesons other than the lowest $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons. Within this approach we find that the physical properties of the Skyrmion as the solitonic description of baryons are \textit{independent} of the HLS parameter $a$. Therefore the only parameters of the model are the pion decay constant and the vector meson mass. Once determined in the meson sector, we have a totally parameter-free theory that allows us to study unequivocally the role of light vector mesons in the Skyrmion structure. We find, as suggested by Sutcliffe, that inclusion of the $ρ$ meson reduces the soliton mass, which makes the Skyrmion come closer to the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) soliton, but the role of the $ω$ meson is found to increase the soliton mass. In a stark contrast, the $Δ$-$N$ mass difference, which is determined by the moment of inertia in adiabatic collective quantization of the Skyrmion, is increased by the $ρ$ vector meson, while it is reduced by the inclusion of the $ω$ meson. All these observations show the importance of the $ω$ meson in the properties of the nucleon and nuclear matter in the Skyrme model.

Skyrmions, half-skyrmions and nucleon mass in dense baryonic matter

We explore the hadron properties in dense baryonic matter in a unified way by using a Skyrme model constructed with an effective Lagrangian which includes the $ρ$ and $ω$ vector mesons as hidden gauge bosons and is valid up to $O(p^4)$ in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. With the two input values of pion decay constant and the lowest lying vector meson mass which can be fixed in free space, all the other low energy constants in the effective Lagrangian are determined by their master formulas derived from holographic QCD models, which allows us to study the baryonic matter properties with no additional free parameters and thus without ambiguities. We find that the $ω$ field that figures in the homogeneous Wess-Zumino term plays a crucial role in the skyrmion structure and its matter properties. The most striking and intriguing observation is that the pion decay constant that smoothly drops with increasing density in the Skyrmion phase stops decreasing at $n_{1/2}^{}$ at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions and remains nearly constant in the half-skyrmion phase. In accordance with the large $N_c$ consideration, the baryon mass also stays non-scaling in the half-skyrmion phase. This feature is supported by the nuclear effective field theory with the parameters of the Lagrangian scaling modified at the skyrmion--half-skyrmion phase transition. Our exploration also uncovers the crucial role of the $ω$ meson in multi-baryon systems as well as in the structure of a single skyrmion.

Gauge-invariant theory of two-pion photo- and electro-production off the nucleon

A field-theoretical description of the photoproduction of two pions off the nucleon is presented that applies to real as well as virtual photons in the one-photon approximation. The Lorentz-covariant theory is complete at the level of all explicit Faddeev-type three-body final-state mechanisms of dressed interacting hadrons, including those of the nonlinear Dyson-Schwinger type. All electromagnetic currents are constructed to satisfy their respective (generalized) Ward-Takahashi identities and thus satisfy local gauge invariance as a matter of course. The Faddeev-type ordering structure results in a natural expansion of the full two-pion photoproduction current $\Mpp^μ$ in terms of multiple loops that preserve gauge invariance order by order in the number of loops, which in turn lends itself naturally to practical applications of increasing sophistication with increasing number of loops.

Hidden Local Symmetry and Infinite Tower of Vector Mesons for Baryons

In an effort to access dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars in a unified framework that handles both single baryon and multibaryon systems on the same footing, we first address a holographic dual action for a single baryon focusing on the role of the infinite tower of vector mesons deconstructed from five dimensions. To leading order in 't Hooft coupling $λ=N_c g_{\rm YM}^2$, one has the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Skyrmion that results when the warping of the bulk background and the Chern-Simons term in the Sakai-Sugimoto D4/D8-${\bar{\rm D8}}$ model are ignored. The infinite tower was found by Sutcliffe to induce flow to a conformal theory, i.e., the BPS. We compare this structure to that of the SS model consisting of a 5D Yang-Mills action in warped space and the Chern-Simons term in which higher vector mesons are integrated out while preserving hidden local symmetry and valid to $O(λ^0)$ and $O(p^4)$ in the chiral counting. We point out the surprisingly important role of the $ω$ meson that figures in the Chern-Simons term that encodes chiral anomaly in the baryon structure and that may be closely tied to short-range repulsion in nuclear interactions.

Model-independent determination of the parity of $Ξ$ hyperons

Based on reflection symmetry in the reaction plane, it is shown that measuring the transverse spin-transfer coefficient $K_{yy}$ in the $\bar{K}N \to KΞ$ reaction directly determines the parity of the produced cascade hyperon in a model-independent way as $π_Ξ=K_{yy}$, where $π_Ξ=\pm 1$ is the parity. This result based on Bohr's theorem provides a completely general, universal relationship that applies to the entire hyperon spectrum. A similar expression is obtained for the photoreaction $γN \to K K Ξ$ by measuring both the double-polarization observable $K_{yy}$ and the photon-beam asymmetry $Σ$. Regarding the feasibility of such experiments, it is pointed out that the self-analyzing property of the $Ξ$'s can be invoked, thus requiring only a polarized nucleon target.

Production and parity determination of $Ξ$ baryons

To understand the structure of hadrons and their production mechanisms, it is very important to be able to identify their quantum numbers. For investigating the spin and parity quantum numbers of $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryons, in particular, it is very important to understand strong interactions in the strangeness sector. At present, such quantum numbers are known for only a few of the $Ξ$ baryons, and even the parity of the ground state $Ξ(1318)$ has never been measured. In this article, we present a novel, model-independent way to determine the parity of $Ξ$ baryons solely based on symmetry considerations for the hadronic reaction $\bar{K} N \to K Ξ$.

The $η$-meson production in photon- and hadron-induced reactions, namely, $γp \to p η$, $π^- p \to n η$, $pp \to ppη$, and $pn \to pnη$, are investigated in a combined analysis in order to learn about the relevant production mechanisms and the possible role of nucleon resonances in these reactions. We consider the nucleonic, mesonic, and nucleon resonance currents constructed within an effective Lagrangian approach and compare the results with the available data for cross sections and spin asymmetries for these reactions. We found that the reaction $γp \to p η$ could be described well with the inclusion of the well-established $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1650)$, $D_{13}(1520)$, and $D_{13}(1700)$ resonances, in addition to the mesonic current. Consideration of other well-established resonances in the same mass region, including the spin-5/2 resonances, $D_{15}(1675)$ and $F_{15}(1680)$, does not further improve the results qualitatively. For the reaction $π^- p \to n η$, the $P_{13}(1720)$ resonance is found to be important for reproducing the structure observed in the differential cross section data. Our model also improves the description of the reaction $NN \to NNη$ to a large extent compared to the earlier results by Nakayama \textit{et al.} [Phys.\ Rev.\ C \textbf{68}, 045201 (2003)]. For this reaction, we address two cases where either the $S_{11}(1535)$ or the $D_{13}$ dominates. Further improvement in the description of these reactions and the difficulty to uniquely determine the nucleon resonance parameters in the present type of analysis are discussed.

Contribution of higher nucleon resonances to K*Λ photoproduction

We investigate K*Λ(1116) photoproduction off the proton and neutron targets in the effective Lagrangian method in the tree-level Born approximation. In addition to the K, K*, and κ exchanges which are the main contributions to the reaction, we consider the contributions from the higher nucleon resonances D13(2080) and the D15(2200). We find that the D13(2080) plays a crucial role in explaining the enhancement of the near-threshold production rate, which results in a good agreement with the experimental data for the proton targets, while the contribution of the D15(2200) is rather small. A similar conclusion is drawn for K* photoproduction off the neutron targets. In addition to the energy and angular dependence of the cross sections, we present the predictions on the photon-beam asymmetry.

Hyperons analogous to the Λ(1405)

The low mass of the $Λ(1405)$ hyperon with $j^P = 1/2^-$, which is higher than the ground state $Λ(1116)$ mass by 290 MeV, is difficult to understand in quark models. We analyze the hyperon spectrum in the bound state approach of the Skyrme model that successfully describes both the $Λ(1116)$ and the $Λ(1405)$. This model predicts that several hyperon resonances of the same spin but with opposite parity form parity doublets that have a mass difference of around 300 MeV, which is indeed realized in the observed hyperon spectrum. Furthermore, the existence of the $Ξ(1620)$ and the $Ξ(1690)$ of $j^P=1/2^-$ is predicted by this model. Comments on the $Ω$ baryons and heavy quark baryons are made as well.

K*Lambda(1116) photoproduction and nucleon resonances

We study the reaction mechanism of K*Lambda(1116) photoproduction off the proton target near threshold considering the contributions from nucleon-resonances. Employing the effective Lagrangian method at the tree-level Born approximation, we investigate the role of the D13(2080) and the D15(2200). We found that the D13 plays a crucial role to reproduce the experimental data well in the forward scattering region at low energy. We also present theoretical predictions on the single photon-beam asymmetry as well as the energy and angular dependence for the cross sections of this reaction.

K*Λ(1116) photoproduction and nucleon resonances

In this presentation, we report our recent studies on the $K^*Λ(1116)$ photoproduction off the proton target, using the tree-level Born approximation, via the effective Lagrangian approach. In addition, we include the nine (three- or four-star confirmed) nucleon resonances below the threshold $\sqrt{s}_\mathrm{th}\approx2008$ MeV, to interpret the discrepancy between the experiment and previous theoretical studies, in the vicinity of the threshold region. From the numerical studies, we observe that the $S_{11}(1535)$ and $S_{11}(1650)$ play an important role for the cross-section enhancement near the $\sqrt{s}_\mathrm{th}$. It also turns out that, in order to reproduce the data, we have the vector coupling constants $g_{K^*S_{11}(1535)Λ}=(7.0\sim9.0)$ and $g_{K^*S_{11}(1650)Λ}=(5.0\sim6.0)$.

Role of high-spin hyperon resonances in the reaction of $γp \to K^+ K^+ Ξ^-$

The recent data taken by the CLAS Collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility for the reaction of $γp \to K^+ K^+ Ξ^-$ are reanalyzed within a relativistic meson-exchange model of hadronic interactions. The present model is an extension of the one developed in an earlier work by Nakayama, Oh, and Haberzettl [Phys. Rev. C 74, 035205 (2006)]. In particular, the role of the spin-5/2 and -7/2 hyperon resonances, which were not included in the previous model, is investigated in the present study. It is shown that the contribution of the $Σ(2030)$ hyperon having spin-7/2 and positive parity has a key role to bring the model predictions into a fair agreement with the measured data for the $K^+Ξ^-$ invariant mass distribution.

Isospin-dependent pion in-medium effects on charged pion ratio in heavy ion collisions

Using results from the chiral perturbation theory for the s-wave interaction and the delta-resonance model for the p-wave interaction of pions with nucleons, we have evaluated the spectral functions of pions in asymmetric nuclear matter with unequal proton and neutron densities. We find that in hot dense neutron-rich matter the strength of the spectral function of positively charged pion at low energies is somewhat larger than that of negatively charged pion. In a thermal model, this isospin-dependent effect slightly reduces the ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions that are produced in heavy ion collisions induced by radioactive beams. Relevance of our results to the determination of the nuclear symmetry energy from measured ratio of negatively to positively charged pions produced in heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Medium effects on charged pion ratio in heavy ion collisions

We have recently studied in the delta-resonance--nucleon-hole model the dependence of the pion spectral function in hot dense asymmetric nuclear matter on the charge of the pion due to the pion p-wave interaction in nuclear medium. In a thermal model, this isospin-dependent effect enhances the ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions in neutron-rich nuclear matter, and the effect is comparable to that due to the uncertainties in the theoretically predicted stiffness of nuclear symmetry energy at high densities. This effect is, however, reversed if we also take into account the s-wave interaction of the pion in nuclear medium as given by chiral perturbation theory, resulting instead in a slightly reduced ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions. Relevance of our results to the determination of the nuclear symmetry energy from the ratio of negatively to positively charged pions produced in heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Medium Modifications of the Rho Meson in Nuclear Photoproduction

We extend our recent study of dilepton invariant-mass spectra from the decays of rho mesons produced by photon reactions off nuclei. We specifically focus on experimental spectra as recently measured by the CLAS Collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using carbon and iron nuclei. Building on our earlier work we broaden our description to a larger set of observables in order to identify sensitivities to the medium effects predicted by microscopic calculations of the rho spectral function. We compute mass spectra for several target nuclei and study the spectral shape as a function of the 3-momentum of the outgoing lepton pair. We also compute the so-called nuclear transparency ratio which provides an alternative means (and thus consistency check) of estimating the inelastic rho width in the cold nuclear medium.

Photoproduction of K Sigma(1385) from the nucleon

The reactions of $K Σ(1385)$ photoproduction, i.e., $γp \to K^+ Σ^0(1385)$ and $γn \to K^+ Σ^-(1385)$, are investigated in the resonance energy region for studying the role of the nucleon and $Δ$ resonances of masses around 2 GeV. The Lagrangians for describing the decays of these resonances into the $K Σ(1385)$ channel are constructed and the decay amplitudes are obtained, which allows us to determine the coupling constants using the predictions of quark models or the data listed by the Particle Data Group. The resulting cross sections are compared to the data from the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and the SPring-8, which indicates nontrivial contributions from the two-star-rated resonances in the Particle Data Group as well as from some missing resonances predicted by a quark model.

Medium Effects in rho-Meson Photoproduction

We compute dilepton invariant mass spectra from the decays of rho mesons produced by photon reactions off nuclei. Our calculations employ a realistic model for the rho photoproduction amplitude on the nucleon which provides fair agreement with measured cross sections. Medium effects are implemented via an earlier constructed rho propagator based on hadronic many-body theory. At incoming photon energies of 1.5 -3 GeV as used by the CLAS experiment at JLAB, the average density probed for iron targets is estimated at about half saturation density. At the pertinent rho-meson 3-momenta the predicted medium effects on the rho propagator are rather moderate. The resulting dilepton spectra approximately agree with recent CLAS data.

Spin asymmetries in gamma + N --> K*bar + Theta^+

The photoproduction processes of the exotic $Θ^+(1540)$ baryon and the $\bar{K}^*$ meson from the nucleon targets, i.e., $γn \to K^{*-} Θ^+$ and $γp \to \bar{K}^{*0} Θ^+$, are investigated in a hadronic model. We consider $K$ and $K^*$ exchanges as well as the $s$ and $u$ channel nucleon and $Θ$ terms. Various spin asymmetries together with cross sections are first computed in order to study the production mechanisms and the parity of the $Θ^+(1540)$ baryon. Within the uncertainties arising from the model-dependence of the production mechanisms and several coupling constants, we find that some target-recoil double spin asymmetries, $C^{\rm TR}_{xx'}$ and $C^{\rm TR}_{xz'}$, are sensitive to the parity of $Θ^+$. In addition, the parity asymmetry of this reaction on the neutron target, which can be obtained by analyzing $K^*$ decay distribution, is found to be useful to estimate the $K^* N Θ$ coupling.

Theta^+ baryon production in KN and NN reactions

We study $Θ^+(1540)$ productions in kaon-nucleon ($KN$) and nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions by assuming that the $Θ^+$ is an isosinglet with $J^P = \frac12^+$. Possible $t$-channel diagrams with $K^*$ exchange are considered in both reactions as well as $K$ exchange in $NN$ reaction. The cross section for $np \to Λ^0 Θ^+$, which has not been considered in previous calculations, is found to be about a factor of 5 larger than that for $np \to Σ^0 Θ^+$ due to the large coupling of $KNΛ$ interaction. The cross sections are obtained by setting $g_{KNΘ}^{}=1$ and varying the ratio of $g_{K^*NΘ}^{}/g_{KNΘ}^{}$ so that future experimental data can be used to estimate these couplings. We also find that the isospin relations hold for these reactions.

Polarization Observables in Phi Meson Photoproduction and the Strangeness Content of the Proton

The contributions of direct knockout processes, in addition to the diffractive production and one-pion-exchange processes associated with the phi-rho-pi and phi-gamma-pi couplings, to the polarization observables of the phi photoproduction from proton are calculated. We make use of Pomeron-photon analogy and a relativistic harmonic oscillator quark model. We find that some of the double polarization observables are very sensitive to a possible (s s-bar) admixture in the proton. It arises from the difference in the spin structures of the three different amplitudes. This suggests that such measurements could be very useful to probe the strangeness content in the proton.

Heavy Quark Symmetry and the Skyrme Model

We present a consistent way of describing heavy baryons containing a heavy quark as bound states of an $SU(2)$ soliton and heavy mesons. The resulting mass formula reveals the heavy quark symmetry explicitly. By extending the model to the orbitally excited states, we establish the generic structure of the heavy baryon spectrum. As anticipated from the heavy quark spin symmetry, the $c$-factor denoting the hyperfine splitting constant {\em vanishes} and the baryons with the same angular momentum of light degrees of freedom form degenerate doublets. This approach is also applied to the pentaquark exotic baryons, where the conventional $c$-factor plays no more a role of the hyperfine constant. After diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of order $N_c^{-1}$, we get the degenerate doublets, which implies the vanishing of genuine hyperfine splitting.

Heavy-Quark Symmetry and Skyrmions

We review recent development on combining heavy-quark symmetry and chiral symmetry in the skyrmion structure of the baryons containing one or more heavy quarks, c (charmed) and b (bottom). We describe two approaches: One going from the chiral symmetry regime of light quarks to the heavy-quark symmetry regime which will be referred to as ``bottom-up" approach and the other going down from the heavy-quark limit to the realistic finite-mass regime which will be referred to as ``top-down." A possible hidden connection between the two symmetry limits is suggested. This review is based largely on the work done -- some unpublished -- by the authors since several years.
