A Unified Approach to High Density: Pion Fluctuations in Skyrmion Matter

As the first in a series of systematic work on dense hadronic matter, we study the properties of the pion in dense medium using Skyrme's effective Lagrangian as a unified theory of the hadronic interactions applicable in the large $N_c$ limit. Dense baryonic matter is described as the ground state of a skyrmion matter which appears in two differentiated phases as a function of matter density: i) at high densities as a stable cubic-centered (CC) half-skyrmion crystal; ii) at low densities as an unstable face-centered cubic (FCC) skyrmion crystal. We substitute the latter by a stable inhomogeneous phase of lumps of dense matter, which represents a naive Maxwell construction of the phase transition. This baryonic dense medium serves as a background for the pions whose effective {\em in-medium} Lagrangian we construct by allowing time-dependent quantum fluctuations on the classical dense matter field. We find that the same parameter which describes the phase transition for baryonic matter, the expectation value of the $σ$ field, also describes the phase transition for the dynamics of the {\em in-medium} pion. Thus, the structure of the baryonic ground state $crucially$ determines the behavior of the pion in the medium. As matter density increases, $<σ>$ decreases, a phenomenon which we interpret to signal, in terms of the parameters of the effective pion Lagrangian $f_π^*$ and $m_π^*$, the restoration of chiral symmetry at high density. Our calculation shows also the important role played by the higher powers in the density as it increases and chiral symmetry is being restored. This feature is likely to be generic at high density although our ground state may not be the true ground state.

Meson Exchange Effect on Color Superconductivity

We investigate the effects of pion and gluon exchanges on the formation of two-flavor color superconductivity at moderate density, $μ<1 GeV$. The chiral quark model proposed by Manohar and Georgi containing pions as well as gluons is employed to show that the pion exchange reduces substantially the value of the superconducting gap gotten with the gluon exchange only. It turns out that the pion exchanges produce a repulsion between quark-quark pair in a spin and isospin singlet state. We suggest that the phase consisiting of pions, gluons and quarks is one of the candidates of in-medium QCD phase at moderate density.

Meson Mass at Large Baryon Chemical Potential in Dense QCD

We reexamine the quark mass induced term in chiral Lagrangian in color-flavor locking phase in dense QCD, and show that the meson mass term is determined by three independent invariants under chiral-axial symmetry, and a meson mass is given in terms of the quark mass, gap, and the chemical potential by $m_π^2\sim m_q^2Δ\barΔ/μ^2\ln(μ^2/Δ^2)$. Thus mesons become massless as $μ\to\infty$.

The Rotation Average in Lightcone Time-Ordered Perturbation Theory

We present a rotation average of the two-body scattering amplitude in the lightcone time($τ$)-ordered perturbation theory. Using a rotation average procedure, we show that the contribution of individual time-ordered diagram can be quantified in a Lorentz invariant way. The number of time-ordered diagrams can also be reduced by half if the masses of two bodies are same. In the numerical example of $ϕ^{3}$ theory, we find that the higher Fock-state contribution is quite small in the lightcone quantization.

The Solar Proton Burning Process Revisited In Chiral Perturbation Theory

The proton burning process p + p -> d + e(+) + ν(e), important for the stellar evolution of main-sequence stars of mass equal to or less than that of the Sun, is computed in effective field theory using chiral perturbation expansion to the next-to-next-to leading chiral order. This represents a model-independent calculation consistent with low-energy effective theory of QCD comparable in accuracy to the radiative np capture at thermal energy previously calculated by first using very accurate two-nucleon wavefunctions backed up by an effective field theory technique with a finite cut-off. The result obtained thereby is found to support within theoretical uncertainties the previous calculation of the same process by Bahcall and his co-workers.

$η-η^{\prime}$ Mixture in Chiral Bag

The $η-η^{\prime}$ mixture is discussed in the chiral bag model to calculate the pseudoscalar octet-singlet mixing angle consistent with the experimental data. The color anomaly is taken into account with the modified boundary conditions, which shows the relation between the $η^{\prime}$ mass and the gluon condensate inside the chiral bag. We show, however, that $η-η^{\prime}$ mixing angle can follow the Cheshire Cat Principle, i.e., insensitivity to the bag radius.

The Role of Lambda(1405) in Kaon-Proton Interactions

S-wave $K^-p$ scattering into various channels near threshold are analyzed in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory with $Λ(1405)$ introduced as an independent field. This is the approach that predicted the critical density $2<=ρ_c/ρ_0 <=3$ for negatively charged kaon condensation. We show that chiral perturbation expansion treating the $Λ(1405)$ as elementary is consistent with {\it all} threshold data including a double-charge-exchange process suppressed at leading order of chiral expansion in the absence of the $Λ(1405)$. We also discuss S-wave $K^+ p$ scattering phase shifts at low energy.

Heavy Quark Symmetry and the Skyrme Model

We present a consistent way of describing heavy baryons containing a heavy quark as bound states of an $SU(2)$ soliton and heavy mesons. The resulting mass formula reveals the heavy quark symmetry explicitly. By extending the model to the orbitally excited states, we establish the generic structure of the heavy baryon spectrum. As anticipated from the heavy quark spin symmetry, the $c$-factor denoting the hyperfine splitting constant {\em vanishes} and the baryons with the same angular momentum of light degrees of freedom form degenerate doublets. This approach is also applied to the pentaquark exotic baryons, where the conventional $c$-factor plays no more a role of the hyperfine constant. After diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of order $N_c^{-1}$, we get the degenerate doublets, which implies the vanishing of genuine hyperfine splitting.

Heavy-Quark Symmetry and Skyrmions

We review recent development on combining heavy-quark symmetry and chiral symmetry in the skyrmion structure of the baryons containing one or more heavy quarks, c (charmed) and b (bottom). We describe two approaches: One going from the chiral symmetry regime of light quarks to the heavy-quark symmetry regime which will be referred to as ``bottom-up" approach and the other going down from the heavy-quark limit to the realistic finite-mass regime which will be referred to as ``top-down." A possible hidden connection between the two symmetry limits is suggested. This review is based largely on the work done -- some unpublished -- by the authors since several years.

Radiative Neutron-Proton Capture in Effective Chiral Lagrangians

We calculate the cross-section for the thermal $n+p\rightarrow d+γ$ process in chiral perturbation theory to next-to-next-to-leading order using heavy-fermion formalism. The exchange current correction is found to be $(4.5\pm 0.3)~\%$ in amplitude and the chiral perturbation at one-loop order gives the cross section $σ_{th}^{np}=(334\pm 2)\ {\mbox mb}$ which is in agreement with the experimental value $(334.2\pm 0.5)\ {\mbox mb}$. Together with the axial charge transitions, this provides a strong support for the power of chiral Lagrangians for nuclear physics.

Chiral Dynamics and Heavy-Fermion Formalism in Nuclei: I. Exchange Axial Currents

Chiral perturbation theory in heavy-fermion formalism is developed for meson-exchange currents in nuclei and applied to nuclear axial- charge transitions. Calculation is performed to the next-to-leading order in chiral expansion which involves graphs up to one loop. The result turns out to be very simple. The previously conjectured notion of "chiral filter mechanism" in the time component of the nuclear axial current and the space component of the nuclear electromagnetic current is verified to that order. As a consequence, the phenomenologically observed soft-pion dominance in the nuclear process is given a simple interpretation in terms of chiral symmetry in nuclei. In this paper, we focus on the axial current, relegating the EM current which can be treated in a similar way to a separate paper. We discuss the implication of our result on the enhanced axial-charge transitions observed in heavy nuclei and clarify the relationship between the phenomenological meson-exchange description and the chiral Lagrangian description.
