Gravitational waves from the vacuum decay with LISA

We investigate the gravitational wave spectrum resulted from the cosmological first-order phase transition. We compare two models; one is a scalar field model without gravitation, while the other is a scalar field model with gravitation. Based on the sensitivity curves of the LISA space-based interferometer on the stochastic gravitational-wave background, we compare the difference between the gravitational wave spectra of the former and the latter cases resulted from the bubble collision process. Especially, we calculated the speed of the bubble wall before collision for the two models numerically. We show that the difference between the amplitudes of those spectra can clearly distinguish between the two models. We expect that the LISA with Signal to Noise Ratio =10 could observe the spectrum as the fast first-order phase transition.

Is Local $H_0$ At Odds With Dark Energy EFT?

Local $H_0$ determinations currently fall in a window between $H_0 \sim 70$ km/s/Mpc (TRGB) and $H_0 \sim 76$ km/s/Mpc (Tully-Fisher). In contrast, BAO data calibrated in an early $Λ$CDM universe are largely consistent with Planck-$Λ$CDM, $H_0 \sim 67.5$ km/s/Mpc. Employing a generic two parameter family of evolving equations of state (EoS) for dark energy (DE) $w_{\textrm{DE}}(z)$ and mock BAO data, we demonstrate that if i) $w_{\textrm{DE}}(z=0) < -1$ and ii) integrated DE density less than $Λ$CDM, then $H_0$ increases. EoS that violate these conditions at best lead to modest $H_0$ increases within $1 σ$. Tellingly, Quintessence and K-essence satisfy neither condition, whereas coupled Quintessence can only satisfy ii). Beyond these seminal DE Effective Field Theories (EFTs), we turn to explicit examples. Working model agnostically in an expansion in powers of redshift $z$, we show that Brans-Dicke/$f(R)$ and Kinetic Gravity Braiding models within the Horndeski class can lead to marginal and modest increases in $H_0$, respectively. We confirm that as far as increasing $H_0$ is concerned, no DE EFT model can outperform the phenomenological two parameter family of the DE models. Evidently, the late universe may no longer be large enough to accommodate $H_0$, BAO and DE described by EFT.

Violation of bound on chaos for charged probe in Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole

We investigate the conjectured bound on the Lyapunov exponent for a charged particle with angular motion in the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole. The Lyapunov exponent is calculated based on the effective Lagrangian. We show that the negative cosmological constant reduces the chaotic behavior of the particle, namely, it decreases the Lyapunov exponent. Hence, the bound is more effective in the AdS spacetime than in the flat spacetime. Nevertheless, we find that the bound can be violated when the angular momenta of the black hole are turned on. Moreover, we show that in an extremal black hole, the bound is more easily violated compared to the nonextremal black hole.

Rotating black holes with an anisotropic matter field

We present a family of new rotating black hole solutions to Einstein's equations that generalizes the Kerr-Newman spacetime to include an anisotropic matter. The geometry is obtained by employing the Newman-Janis algorithm. In addition to the mass, the charge and the angular momentum, an additional hair exists thanks to the negative radial pressure of the anisotropic matter. The properties of the black hole are analyzed in detail including thermodynamics. This black hole can be used as a better engine than the Kerr-Newman one in extracting energy.

Conductivities in an anisotropic medium

In order to imitate anisotropic medium of a condensed matter system, we take into account an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion model as a dual gravity theory where the anisotropy is caused by different momentum relaxations. This gravity model allows an anisotropic charged black hole solution. On this background, we investigate how the linear responses of vector modes like electric, thermoelectric, and thermal conductivities rely on the anisotropy. We find that the electric conductivity in low frequency limit shows a Drude peak and that in the intermediate frequency regime it reveals the power law behavior. Especially, when the anisotropy increases the exponent of the power law becomes smaller. In addition, we find that there exist a critical value for the anisotropy at which the DC conductivity reaches to its maximum value.

Cosmic Censorship of Rotating Anti-de Sitter Black Hole

We test the validity of cosmic censorship in the rotating anti-de Sitter black hole. For this purpose, we investigate whether the extremal black hole can be overspun by the particle absorption. The particle absorption will change the mass and angular momentum of the black hole, which is analyzed using the Hamilton-Jacobi equations consistent with the laws of thermodynamics. We have found that the mass of the extremal black hole increases more than the angular momentum. Therefore, the outer horizon of the black hole still exists, and cosmic censorship is valid.

Fubini instantons in Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation

We investigate various types of Fubini instantons in Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation, which describe the decay of the vacuum state at a hilltop potential through the tunneling without a barrier. It is shown that the vacuum states are modified by the non-minimally coupled higher-curvature term. Accordingly, we present the new type of solutions describing the tunneling from new vacuum states in anti-de Sitter and de Sitter backgrounds. The decay probabilities of vacuum states are also influenced. Consequently, we show that the semiclassical exponents can be decreased for specific parameter ranges, which make the tunneling probabilities enhanced.

Primordial gravitational waves from the space-condensate inflation model

We consider the space-condensate inflation model to study the primordial gravitational waves generated in the early Universe. We calculate the energy spectrum of gravitational waves induced by the space-condensate inflation model for full frequency range with assumption that the phase transition between two consecutive regimes to be abrupt during evolution of the Universe. The suppression of energy spectrum is found in our model for the decreasing frequency of gravitational waves depending on the model parameter. To realize the suppression of energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves, we study an existence of the early phase transition during inflation for the space-condensate inflation model.

Dynamics of magnetic shells and information loss problem

We investigate dynamics of magnetic thin-shells in three dimensional anti de Sitter background. Because of the magnetic field, an oscillatory solution is possible. This oscillating shell can tunnel to a collapsing shell or a bouncing shell, where both of tunnelings induce an event horizon and a singularity. In the entire path integral, via the oscillating solution, there is a non-zero probability to maintain a trivial causal structure without a singularity. Therefore, due to the path integral, the entire wave function can conserve information. Since an oscillating shell can tunnel after a number of oscillations, in the end, it will allow an infinite number of different branchings to classical histories. This system can be a good model of the effective loss of information, where information is conserved by a solution that is originated from gauge fields.

Gravitational waves from cosmic bubble collisions

Cosmic bubbles are nucleated through the quantum tunneling process. After nucleation they would expand and undergo collisions with each other. In this paper, we focus in particular on collisions of two equal-sized bubbles and compute gravitational waves emitted from the collisions. First, we study the mechanism of the collisions by means of a real scalar field and its quartic potential. Then, using this model, we compute gravitational waves from the collisions in a straightforward manner. In the quadrupole approximation, time-domain gravitational waveforms are directly obtained by integrating the energy-momentum tensors over the volume of the wave sources, where the energy-momentum tensors are expressed in terms of the scalar field, the local geometry and the potential. We present gravitational waveforms emitted during (i) the initial-to-intermediate stage of strong collisions and (ii) the final stage of weak collisions: the former is obtained numerically, in \textit{full General Relativity} and the latter analytically, in the flat spacetime approximation. We gain qualitative insights into the time-domain gravitational waveforms from bubble collisions: during (i), the waveforms show the non-linearity of the collisions, characterized by a modulating frequency and cusp-like bumps, whereas during (ii), the waveforms exhibit the linearity of the collisions, featured by smooth monochromatic oscillations.

Holographic Nucleons in the Nuclear Medium

We investigate the nucleon's rest mass and dispersion relation in the nuclear medium which is holographically described by the thermal charged AdS geometry. On this background, the chiral condensate plays an important role to determine the nucleon's mass in both the vacuum and the nuclear medium. It also significantly modifies the nucleon's dispersion relation. The nucleon's mass in the high density regime increases with density as expected, while in the low density regime it slightly decreases. We further study the splitting of the nucleon's masses caused by the isospin interaction with the nuclear medium.

Instability of Black Holes with a Gauss-Bonnet Term

We investigate the fragmentation instability of hairy black holes in the theory with a Gauss$-$Bonnet(GB) term in asymptotically flat spacetime. Our approach is through the non-perturbative fragmentation instability. By this approach, we investigate whether the initial black hole can be broken into two black holes by comparing the entropy of the initial black hole with the sum of those of two fragmented black holes. The relation between the black hole instability and the GB coupling with dilaton hair are presented. We describe the phase diagrams with respect to the mass of the black hole solutions and coupling constants. We find that a perturbatively stable black hole can be unstable under fragmentation.

Instability of Rotating Anti-de Sitter Black Holes

We study the instability of higher-dimensional rotating anti-de Sitter black holes through fragmentation. Fragmentation occurs when black holes rotate too fast to sustain their horizon, and then the black holes are broken into small pieces. Using this process, we test the stability of AdS black holes and discover the dynamical upper bounds of the angular momentum and the cosmological constant. We show that AdS black holes can exist stably within limited parameter ranges in the general dimensions. The parameter ranges are obtained numerically in terms of angular momentum and cosmological constant.

Instantons near a tachyonic top in anti de Sitter and the no-boundary regulator

We investigate instantons near a tachyonic top in an anti de Sitter (AdS) background. If the mass scale around the hill-top is above the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound, then the top is classically stable. When the BF bound is satisfied, it is already known that there can exist instantons with a non-zero probability, though fine-tunings of the potential are required. On the other hand, we may consider a possibility to obtain instantons with a non-zero probability for more natural shape of potentials. We found that the no-boundary regulator is useful to assign a non-zero probability for general instantons near the tachyonic top with a consistent framework. To use the no-boundary regulator, we need to introduce the complexification of fields. One interesting feature is that, for these AdS instantons, the classicality may not be satisfied after the Wick rotation and hence after the nucleation. This magnifies a novel difference between dS and AdS; a semi-classical boundary observer in AdS may notice the dispersion of quantum fields as a kind of uncertainty, while every semi-classical observers in dS are classicalized individually and hence there is no semi-classical observer who can see the quantum dispersion of the scalar field.

Observational constraints on inflation with the nonlinear sigma fields in light of Plank 2015

We study an inflation model with a nonlinear sigma field which has $SO(3)$ symmetry. The background solution of the nonlinear sigma field is proportional to the space coordinates linearly while keeping the homogeneous and isotropic background spacetime. We calculate the observable quantities including the power spectra of the scalar and tensor modes, the spectral indices, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the running of the spectral indices, and then constrain our model with the Planck 2015 observational data.

Oscillating Fubini instantons in curved space

A Fubini instanton is a bounce solution which describes the decay of a vacuum state located at the top of the tachyonic potential {\it via} the tunneling without a barrier. We investigate various types of Fubini instantons of a self-gravitating scalar field under a tachyonic quartic potential. With gravity taken into account, we show there exist various types of unexpected solutions including oscillating bounce solutions. We present numerically oscillating Fubini bounce solutions in anti-de Sitter and de Sitter spaces. We construct the parametric phase diagrams of the solutions, which is the extension of our previous work. Of particular significance is that there always exist solutions in all parameter spaces in anti-de Sitter space. The regions are divided depending on the number of oscillations. On the other hand, de Sitter space allows solutions with codimension-one in parameter spaces. We numerically evaluate semiclassical exponents which give the finite tunneling probabilities.

Revisiting slow-roll inflation in nonminimal derivative coupling with potentials

We investigate the slow-roll inflation in the nonminimal derivative coupling (NDC) model with exponential, quadric, and quartic potentials. It was known that this model provides an enhanced slow-roll inflation induced by gravitationally enhanced friction even for a steep exponential potential. In the phase portrait, the inflationary attractor is described by the slow-roll equation. Introducing the autonomous form, the inflation is regarded as an emergence from the saddle point and it leaves this fixed point along the slow-roll equation. We show explicitly that if one uses the NDC with potentials, the slow-roll inflation is easier to be implemented than the canonical coupling with the same potentials.

The nucleation of false vacuum bubbles with compact geometries

We investigate and classify the possible types of false vacuum bubbles in Einstein gravity. The false vacuum bubbles can occur only if gravity is taken into account. We show that there exist solutions only with compact geometries. The analytic computations for the radius and nucleation rate of a vacuum bubble are evaluated using the thin-wall approximation. We discuss possible cosmological implications of our new solutions.

Time Evolution of Entanglement Entropy in Quenched Holographic Superconductors

We investigate the dynamical evolution of entanglement entropy in a holographic superconductor model by quenching the source term of the dual charged scalar operator. By access to the full background geometry, the holographic entanglement entropy is calculated for a strip geometry at the AdS boundary. It is found that the entanglement entropy exhibits a robust non-monotonic behaviour in time, independent of the strength of Gaussian quench and the size of the strip: it first displays a small dip, then grows linearly, and finally saturates. In particular, the linear growth velocity of the entanglement entropy has an upper bound for strip with large width; The equilibrium value of the non-local probe at late time shows a power law scaling behaviour with respect to the quench strength; Moreover, the entanglement entropy can uncover the dynamical transition at certain critical quench strength which happens to coincide with the one obtained form the dynamical evolution of scalar order parameter.

Chaos in Lifshitz Spacetimes

We investigate the chaotic behavior of a circular test string in the Lifshitz spacetimes considering the critical exponent $z$ as an external control parameter. It is demonstrated that two primary tools to observe chaos in this system are Poincaré section and Lyapunov exponent. Finally, the numerical result shows that if $z=1$, the string dynamics is regular, while in a case slightly larger than $z=1$, the dynamics can be irregular and chaotic.

Dynamical Condensation in a Holographic Superconductor Model with Anisotropy

We study dynamical condensation process in a holographic superconductor model with anisotropy. The time-dependent numerical solution is constructed for the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with complex scalar in asymptotic AdS spacetime. The introduction of dilaton field generates the anisotropy in boundary spatial directions. In analogy of isotropic case, we have two black hole solutions below certain critical temperature $T_c$, the anisotropic charged black hole with and without scalar hair, corresponding respectively to the supercooled normal phase and superconducting phase in the boundary theory. We observe a nonlinear evolution from a supercooled anisotropic black hole without scalar hair to a anisotropic hairy black hole. Via AdS/CFT correspondence, we extract time evolution of the condensate operator, which shows an exponential growth and subsequent saturation, similar to the isotropic case. Furthermore, we obtain a nontrivial time evolution of the boundary pressure, while in isotropic case it remains a constant. We also generalize quasinormal modes calculation to anisotropic black holes and shows scalar quasinormal modes match with relaxation time scale of the condensate operator. In addition, we present the final temperature and anisotropic pressure as functions of initial temperature and background anisotropy.

Euclidean quantum gravity and stochastic inflation

In this paper, we compare dispersions of a scalar field in Euclidean quantum gravity with stochastic inflation. We use Einstein gravity and a minimally coupled scalar field with a quadratic potential. We restrict our attention to small mass and small field cases. In the Euclidean approach, we introduce the ground state wave function which is approximated by instantons. We used a numerical technique to find instantons that satisfy classicality. In the stochastic approach, we introduce the probability distribution of Hubble patches that can be approximated by locally homogeneous universes down to a smoothing scale. We assume that the ground state wave function should correspond to the stationary state of the probability distribution of the stochastic universe. By comparing the dispersion of both approaches, we conclude three main results. (1) For a statistical distribution with a certain value, we can find a corresponding instanton in the Euclidean side, and it should be a complex-valued instanton. (2) The size of the universe of the Euclidean approach corresponds to the smoothing scale of the stochastic side; the universe is homogeneous up to the Euclidean instanton. (3) In addition, as the mass increases up to a critical value, both approaches break at the same time. Hence, generation of classical inhomogeneity in the stochastic approach and the instability of classicality in the Euclidean approach are related.

Nucleon mass splitting in the isospin medium

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we investigate a nucleon mass splitting and nucleon-pion coupling in the isospin medium. We find that there exists a nucleon mass splitting which is exactly given by the half of the meson mass splitting because nucleon has the half isospin charge of the charged mesons. In addition, we also investigate the nucleon-pion coupling, which requires the modification of the known Abelian-type unitary gauge fixing term because non-Abelian fluctuations should be taken into account in the isospin medium. In this paper, after constructing an appropriate unitary gauge fixing term, we find that in spite of the nucleon's and meson's mass splittings, there is no nucleon-pion coupling splitting in the isospin medium.

Observational constraints on slow-roll inflation coupled to a Gauss-Bonnet term

We study slow-roll inflation with a Gauss-Bonnet term that is coupled to an inflaton field nonminimally. We investigate the inflationary solutions for a specific type of the nonminimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term and inflaton potential both analytically and numerically. We also calculate the observable quantities such as the power spectra of the scalar and tensor modes, the spectral indices, the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the running spectral indices. Finally, we constrain our result with the observational data by Planck and BICEP2 experiment.

Properties of Holographic Mesons on Dense Medium

We study the energy dispersions of holographic light mesons and their decay constants on dense nuclear medium. As the spatial momenta of mesons along the boundary direction increase, both observables of the mesons not only increase but also split according to the isospin charges. The decay constant of the negative meson is more large than that of the positive meson of the same type due to the chemical potentials of the background nucleons.

Worldsheet one-loop energy correction to IIA Giant Magnon

We compute one-loop corrections to the energy of a IIA giant magnon solution in the $AdS_4 \times CP^3$ background by using the standard quantum field theory (QFT) techniques. The string action is expanded around the solution to the quadratic order in the fluctuation fields. The resulting action has 2D coordinate dependent-coefficients, a feature that complicates the analysis. The solution contains a worldsheet velocity parameter $v$, and is expanded in terms of the parameter. A perturbative analysis is carried out by treating the $v$-dependent parts as vertices. The energy is computed by first putting the system in a box of length $L$ and Fourier-transforming the fields into the discrete momentum modes. We compare our result with the results obtained by the algebraic curve method.

Black hole complementarity and firewall in two dimensions

In connection with black hole complementarity, we study the possibility of the duplication of information in the RST model which is an exactly soluble quantized model in two dimensions. We find that the duplication of information can be observed without resort to assuming an excessively large number of scalar fields. If we introduce a firewall, then we can circumvent this problem; however, the firewall should be outside the event horizon.

Correlation functions of the ABJM model

In the ABJM model, we study the three-point function of two heavy operators and an (ir)relevant one. Following the AdS/CFT correspondence, the structure constant in the large 't Hooft coupling limit can be factorized into two parts. One is the structure constant with a marginal operator, which is fully determined by the physical quantities of heavy operator and gives rise to the consistent result with the RG analysis. The other can be expressed as the universal form depending only on the conformal dimension of an (ir)relevant operator. We also investigate the new size effect of a circular string dual to a certain closed spin chain.

Correlators of massive string states with conserved currents

We calculate correlation functions of the R-current or the stress-energy tensor T_{μν} with two non-protected operators dual to generic massive string states with rotation in S^5, in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Field theory Ward identities make predictions about the all-loop behaviour of these correlators. In particular, they restrict the fusion coefficient to be proportional to the R-charge of the operators or to their dimension, respectively, with certain coefficients of proportionality. We reproduce these predictions, at strong coupling, using string theory. Furthermore, we point out that the recently observed strong coupling factorisation of 4-point correlators is consistent with conformal symmetry and puts constraints on the strong coupling expressions of 4-point correlators involving R-currents or the stress-energy tensor.

Fubini instantons in curved space

We study Fubini instantons of a self-gravitating scalar field. The Fubini instanton describes the decay of a vacuum state under tunneling instead of rolling in the presence of a tachyonic potential. The tunneling occurs from the maximum of the potential, which is a vacuum state, to any arbitrary state, belonging to the tunneling without any barrier. We consider two different types of the tachyonic potential. One has only a quartic term. The other has both the quartic and quadratic terms. We show that, there exist several kinds of new O(4)-symmetric Fubini instanton solution, which are possible only if gravity is taken into account. One type of them has the structure with $Z_2$ symmetry. This type of the solution is possible only in the de Sitter background. We discuss on the interpretation of the solutions with $Z_2$ symmetry.

Holographic meson mass splitting in the Nuclear Matter

We study the holographic light meson spectra and their mass splitting in the nuclear medium. In order to describe the nuclear matter, we take into account the thermal charged AdS geometry with two flavor charges, which can be reinterpreted as the number densities of proton and neutron after some field redefinitions. We show that the meson mass splitting occurs when there exists the density difference between proton and neutron. Depending on the flavor charge, the mass of the positively (negatively) charged meson increases (decreases) as the density difference increases, whereas the neutral meson mass is independent of the density difference. In the regime of the large nucleon density with a relatively large number difference between proton and neutron, we find that negatively charged pion becomes massless in the nuclear medium, so the pion condensate can occur. We also investigate the binding energy of a heavy quarkonium in the nuclear medium, in which the binding energy of a heavy quarkonium becomes weaker as the density difference increases.

Inside and outside stories of black-branes in anti de Sitter space

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics inside and outside of black-branes in anti de Sitter space by numerical simulations using double-null formalism. We prepare a charged planar matter shell which, due to a negative cosmological constant, collapses and dynamically forms a black-brane with an apparent horizon, a singularity and a Cauchy horizon. The gravitational collapse cannot form a naked overcharged black-brane and hence weak cosmic censorship is safe. Although mass inflation occurs, the effect is much milder than in the case of charged black holes; hence, strong cosmic censorship seems not to be safe. We observed the scalar field dynamics outside the horizon. There should remain a non-trivial scalar field combination - 'charge cloud' - between the horizon and the boundary. This can give some meaning in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Is the firewall consistent?: Gedanken experiments on black hole complementarity and firewall proposal

In this paper, we discuss the black hole complementarity and the firewall proposal at length. Black hole complementarity is inevitable if we assume the following five things: unitarity, entropy-area formula, existence of an information observer, semi-classical quantum field theory for an asymptotic observer, and the general relativity for an in-falling observer. However, large N rescaling and the AMPS argument show that black hole complementarity is inconsistent. To salvage the basic philosophy of the black hole complementarity, AMPS introduced a firewall around the horizon. According to large N rescaling, the firewall should be located close to the apparent horizon. We investigate the consistency of the firewall with the two critical conditions: the firewall should be near the time-like apparent horizon and it should not affect the future infinity. Concerning this, we have introduced a gravitational collapse with a false vacuum lump which can generate a spacetime structure with disconnected apparent horizons. This reveals a situation that there is a firewall outside of the event horizon, while the apparent horizon is absent. Therefore, the firewall, if it exists, not only does modify the general relativity for an in-falling observer, but also modify the semi-classical quantum field theory for an asymptotic observer.

No-boundary measure and preference for large e-foldings in multi-field inflation

The no-boundary wave function of quantum gravity usually assigns only very small probability to long periods of inflation. This was a reason to doubt about the no-boundary wave function to explain the observational universe. We study the no-boundary proposal in the context of multi-field inflation to see whether the number of fields changes the situation. For a simple model, we find that indeed the no-boundary wave function can give higher probability for sufficient inflation, but the number of fields involved has to be very high.

Status report: black hole complementarity controversy

Black hole complementarity was a consensus among string theorists for the interpretation of the information loss problem. However, recently some authors find inconsistency of black hole complementarity: large N rescaling and AMPS argument. According to AMPS, the horizon should be a firewall so that one cannot penetrate there for consistency. There are some controversial discussions on the firewall. Apart from these papers, the authors suggest an assertion using a semi-regular black hole model and we conclude that the firewall, if it exists, should affect to asymptotic observer. In addition, if any opinion does not consider the duplication experiment and the large N rescaling, then the argument is difficult to accept.

The Battle of the Bulge: Decay of the Thin, False Cosmic String

We consider the decay of cosmic strings that are trapped in the false vacuum in a theory of scalar electrodynamics in 3+1 dimensions. We restrict our analysis to the case of thin-walled cosmic strings which occur when large magnetic flux trapped inside the string. Thus the string looks like a tube of fixed radius, at which it is classically stable. The core of the string contains magnetic flux in the true vacuum, while outside the string, separated by a thin wall, is the false vacuum. The string decays by tunnelling to a configuration which is represented by a bulge, where the region of true vacuum within, is ostensibly enlarged. The bulge can be described as the meeting, of a kink soliton anti-soliton pair, along the length of the string. It can be described as a bulge appearing in the initial string, starting from the string of small, classically stable radius, expanding to a fat string of large, classically unstable (to expansion) radius and then returning back to the string of small radius along its length. This configuration is the bounce point of a corresponding O(2) symmetric instanton, which we can determine numerically. Once the bulge appears it explodes in real time. The kink soliton anti-soliton pair recede from each other along the length of the string with a velocity that quickly approaches the speed of light, leaving behind a fat tube. At the same time the radius of the fat tube that is being formed, expands (transversely) as it is no longer classically stable, converting false vacuum to the true vacuum with ever diluting magnetic field within. The rate of this expansion is determined by the energy difference between the true vacuum and the false vacuum. Our analysis could be applied to a network, of cosmic strings formed in the very early universe or vortex lines in a superheated superconductor.

Transport in non-conformal holographic fluids

We have considered non-conformal fluid dynamics whose gravity dual is a certain Einstein dilaton system with Liouville type dilaton potential, characterized by an intrinsic parameter $η$. We have discussed the Hawking-Page transition in this framework using hard-wall model and it turns out that the critical temperature of the Hawking-Page transition encapsulates a non-trivial dependence on $η$. We also obtained transport coefficients such as AC conductivity, shear viscosity and diffusion constant in the hydrodynamic limit, which show non-trivial $η$ dependent deviations from those in conformal fluids, although the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density is found to saturate the universal bound. Some of the retarded correlators are also computed in the high frequency limit for case study.

Tunneling decay of false vortices

We consider the decay of vortices trapped in the false vacuum of a theory of scalar electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions. The potential is inspired by models with intermediate symmetry breaking to a metastable vacuum that completely breaks a U(1) symmetry, while in the true vacuum the symmetry is unbroken. The false vacuum is unstable through the formation of true vacuum bubbles; however, the rate of decay can be extremely long. On the other hand, the false vacuum can contain metastable vortex solutions. These vortices contain the true vacuum inside in addition to a unit of magnetic flux and the appropriate topologically nontrivial false vacuum outside. We numerically establish the existence of vortex solutions which are classically stable; however, they can decay via tunneling. In general terms, they tunnel to a configuration which is a large, thin-walled vortex configuration that is now classically unstable to the expansion of its radius. We compute an estimate for the tunneling amplitude in the semi-classical approximation. We believe our analysis would be relevant to superconducting thin films or superfluids.

Bubble collision with gravitation

In this paper, we study vacuum bubble collisions with various potentials including gravitation, assuming spherical, planar, and hyperbolic symmetry. We use numerical calculations from double-null formalism. Spherical symmetry can mimic the formation of a black hole via multiple bubble collisions. Planar and especially hyperbolic symmetry describes two bubble collisions. We study both cases, when two true vacuum regions have the same field value or different field values, by varying tensions. For the latter case, we also test symmetric and asymmetric bubble collisions, and see details of causal structures. If the colliding energy is sufficient, then the vacuum can be destabilized, and it is also demonstrated. This double-null formalism can be a complementary approach in the context of bubble collisions.

Holographic Charged Fluid with Anomalous Current at Finite Cutoff Surface in Einstein-Maxwell Gravity

The holographic charged fluid with anomalous current in Einstein-Maxwell gravity has been generalized from the infinite boundary to the finite cutoff surface by using the gravity/fluid correspondence. After perturbing the boosted Reissner-Nordstrom (RN)-AdS black brane solution of the Einstein-Maxwell gravity with the Chern-Simons term, we obtain the first order perturbative gravitational and Maxwell solutions, and calculate the stress tensor and charged current of the dual fluid at finite cutoff surfaces which contains undetermined parameters after demanding regularity condition at the future horizon. We adopt the Dirichlet boundary condition and impose the Landau frame to fix these parameters, finally obtain the dependence of transport coefficients in the dual stress tensor and charged current on the arbitrary radical cutoff $r_c$. We find that the dual fluid is not conformal, but it has vanishing bulk viscosity, and the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio is universally $1/4π$. Other transport coefficients of the dual current turns out to be cutoff-dependent. In particular, the chiral vortical conductivity expressed in terms of thermodynamic quantities takes the same form as that of the dual fluid at the asymptotic AdS boundary, and the chiral magnetic conductivity receives a cutoff-dependent correction which vanishes at the infinite boundary.

Holographic Instanton Liquid and chiral transition

In the presence of uniform D-instanton charges, quarks can be confined although gluons are not, because baryon vertices are allowed due to the net repulsive force on the on the probe D-branes. Since there is no scale in the geometry itself apart from the horizon size, there is no Hawking-Page transition. As a consequence, the D7 brane embedding can encode the effect of the the finite temperature as well as finite baryon density even for low temperature. The probe D-brane embedding, however, undergoes a chiral phase transition according to the temperature and density parameter. We studied such phase transitions and calculated the constituent quark mass, chiral condensation and the binding energy of baryons as function of the density. The baryon vertex melting is identified as the quark deconfinement. We draw phase diagram according to these transitions.

Non-conformal Hydrodynamics in Einstein-dilaton Theory

In the Einestein-dilaton theory with a Liouville potential parameterized by $η$, we find a Schwarzschild-type black hole solution. This black hole solution, whose asymptotic geometry is described by the warped metric, is thermodynamically stable only for $0 \le η< 2$. Applying the gauge/gravity duality, we find that the dual gauge theory represents a non-conformal thermal system with the equation of state depending on $η$. After turning on the bulk vector fluctuations with and without a dilaton coupling, we calculate the charge diffusion constant, which indicates that the life time of the quasi normal mode decreases with $η$. Interestingly, the vector fluctuation with the dilaton coupling shows that the DC conductivity increases with temperature, a feature commonly found in electrolytes.

Oscillating instanton solutions in curved space

We investigate oscillating instanton solutions of a self-gravitating scalar field between degenerate vacua. We show that there exist O(4)-symmetric oscillating solutions in a de Sitter background. The geometry of this solution is finite and preserves the $Z_{2}$ symmetry. The nontrivial solution corresponding to tunneling is possible only if the effect of gravity is taken into account. We present numerical solutions of this instanton, including the phase diagram of solutions in terms of the parameters of the present work and the variation of energy densities. Our solutions can be interpreted as solutions describing an instanton-induced domain wall or braneworld-like object rather than a kink-induced domain wall or braneworld. The oscillating instanton solutions have a thick wall and the solutions can be interpreted as a mechanism providing nucleation of the thick wall for topological inflation. We remark that $Z_{2}$ invariant solutions also exist in a flat and anti-de Sitter background, though the physical significance is not clear.

Phases of a holographic QCD with gluon condensation at finite Temperature and Density

We study the phase diagram of a holographic QCD using the probe D7 brane in black D3 geometry with finite D-instanton charge. Due to quasi-confining nature of the geometry, baryon vertex can exist outside the horizon so that we can find D7 brane embeddings with finite baryon density and finite chiral condensation as well as an embedding where only quarks are possible but chiral condensation can be zero or non-zero. We study the phase transition and phase diagram between these phases. We also calculated constituent quark mass and binding energy of baryons as fucntion of the density.

Physical Response Functions of Strongly Coupled Massive Quantum Liquids

We study physical properties of strongly coupled massive quantum liquids from their spectral functions using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The generic model that we consider is dense, heavy fundamental matter coupled to SU(N_c) super Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature above the deconfinement phase transition but below the scale set by the baryon number density. In this setup, we study the current-current correlators of the baryon number density using new techniques that employ a scaling behavior in the dual geometry. Our results, the AC conductivity, the quasi-particle spectrum and the Drude-limit parameters like the relaxation time are simple temperature-independent expressions that depend only on the mass-squared to density ratio and display a crossover between a baryon- and meson-dominated regime. We concentrated on the (2+1)-dimensional defect case, but in principle our results can also be generalized straightforwardly to other cases.

The no-boundary measure in string theory: Applications to moduli stabilization, flux compactification, and cosmic landscape

We investigate the no-boundary measure in the context of moduli stabilization. To this end, we first show that for exponential potentials, there are no classical histories once the slope exceeds a critical value. We also investigate the probability distributions given by the no-boundary wave function near maxima of the potential. These results are then applied to a simple model that compactifies 6D to 4D (HBSV model) with fluxes. We find that the no-boundary wave function effectively stabilizes the moduli of the model. Moreover, we find the a priori probability for the cosmological constant in this model. We find that a negative value is preferred, and a vanishing cosmological constant is not distinguished by the probability measure. We also discuss the application to the cosmic landscape. Our preliminary arguments indicate that the probability of obtaining anti de Sitter space is vastly greater than for de Sitter.

Worldsheet S-matrix of beta-deformed SYM

We compute perturbative worldsheet S-matrix of beta-deformed AdS/CFT in the strong and weak `t Hooft coupling limit to compare with exact S-matrix. For the purpose we take near BMN limit of TsT-transformed AdS_5 x S^5 with the twisted boundary condition and compute the S-matrix on worldsheet using light-cone gauge fixed Lagrangian. For the weak coupling side, we compute the S-matrix in the SU(3) sector by applying coordinate Bethe ansatz method to the one-loop dilatation operator obtained from the deformed super Yang-Mills theory. These analysis support the conjectured exact S-matrix in the leading order for both sides of beta-deformed AdS/CFT along with appropriate twisted boundary conditions.

A Holographic Model of Strange Metals

We give a review on our recent work arXiv:1006.0779 [hep-th] and arXiv:1006.1719 [hep-th], in which properties of holographic strange metals were investigated. The background is chosen to be anisotropic scaling solution in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory with a Liouville potential. The effects of bulk Maxwell field, an extra U(1) gauge field and probe D-branes on the DC conductivity, the DC Hall conductivity and the AC conductivity are extensively analyzed. We classify behaviors of the conductivities according to the parameter ranges in the bulk theory and characterize conditions when the holographic results can reproduce experimental data.

Conductivity in the anisotropic background

By using the gauge/gravity duality, we investigate the dual field theories of the anisotropic backgrounds, which are exact solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a Liouville potential. When we turn on the bulk gauge field fluctuation $A_x$ with a non-trivial dilaton coupling, the AC conductivity of this dual field theory is proportional to the frequency with an exponent depending on parameters of the anisotropic background. In some parameter regions, we find that this conductivity can have the negative exponent like the strange metal. In addition, we also investigate another U(1) gauge field fluctuation, which is not coupled with a dilaton field. We classify all possible conductivities of this system and find that the exponent of the conductivity is always positive.

Correlation functions of magnon and spike

After considering a solitonic string moving in the Poincare $AdS$ and two-dimensional sphere, we calculate the two-point correlation function of magnon and spike in the semi-classical limit without any explicit solution. We also calculate the three-point correlation functions between two heavy and one light operators. We find that the coupling between two heavy and one light operators in the string side is the exactly same as one obtained from the gauge theory by using the RG analysis.

Creation of a black hole pair with a domain wall

We study the creation of a black hole (BH) pair separated by a domain wall, in the presence of a cosmological constant. We construct the solution representing a BH pair with a domain wall and compute the Euclidean action to evaluate the probability of the pair creation in the background with a preexisting domain wall. The BHs can be either neutral or magnetically charged ones. We compare the results of the charged case with those of the neutral case with the same cosmological constant. We find that the production rate of a charged BH pair is always suppressed in comparison with that of the neutral one in both four and five dimensions, irrespective of the sign of the cosmological constant. The Euclidean action is equal to the minus of the entropy. Since the horizon area of a BH is decreased as the magnitude of its charge is increased in general, the decreasing creation rate can be understood in terms of the increasing charge. We obtain the explicit confirmation on the relation between the pair creation rate of the charged BHs and the area of horizons in both the four- and five-dimensional cases in the presence of a cosmological constant. The singularity of the domain wall universe with charged BHs, as distinct from that with neutral BHs, can be avoided.

Dynamics of false vacuum bubbles in Brans-Dicke theory

We study the dynamics of false vacuum bubbles in the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity by using the thin shell or thin wall approximation. We consider a false vacuum bubble that has a different value for the Brans-Dicke field between the inside false vacuum region and the outside true vacuum region. Within a certain limit of field values, the difference of field values makes the effective tension of the shell negative. This allows new expanding false vacuum bubbles to be seen by the outside observer, which are disallowed in Einstein gravity.

Holographic Meson Spectra in the Dense Medium with Chiral Condensate

We study two $1/N_c$ effects on the meson spectra by using the AdS/CFT correspondence where the $1/N_c$ corrections from the chiral condensate and the quark density are controlled by the gravitational backreaction of the massive scalar field and U(1) gauge field respectively. The dual geometries with zero and nonzero current quark masses are obtained numerically. We discuss meson spectra and binding energy of heavy quarkonium with the subleading corrections in the hard wall model.

Mass inflation in f(R) gravity: A conjecture on the resolution of the mass inflation singularity

We study gravitational collapse of a charged black hole in f(R) gravity using double-null formalism. We require cosmological stability to f(R) models; we used the Starobinsky model and the R + (1/2)cR^2 model. Charged black holes in f(R) gravity can have a new type of singularity due to higher curvature corrections, the so-called f(R)-induced singularity, although it is highly model-dependent. As the advanced time increases, the internal structure will approach the Cauchy horizon, which may not be an inner apparent horizon. There is mass inflation as one approaches the Cauchy horizon and hence the Cauchy horizon may be a curvature singularity with nonzero area. However, the Ricci scalar is finite for an out-going null observer. This can be integrated as follows: Cosmologically stable higher curvature corrections of the Ricci scalar made it bounded even in the presence of mass inflation. Finally, we conjecture that if there is a general action including general higher curvature corrections with cosmological stability, then the corrections can make all curvature components finite even in the presence of mass inflation. This might help us to resolve the problem of inner horizon instability of regular black hole models.

Nucleation and evolution of false vacuum bubbles in scalar-tensor gravity

In this presentation, we discuss the nucleation and subsequent evolution of false vacuum bubbles in the scalar-tensor gravity. First, we transform the scalar-tensor type theory of gravity to the standard Brans-Dicke type. Second, we transform the Brans-Dicke type theory from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame. For a certain potential, a true vacuum bubble in the Einstein frame can be transformed to a false vacuum bubble in the Jordan frame by a conformal transformation. Thus, in the Jordan frame, the nucleation of a false vacuum bubble can be possible and its subsequent evolution can be described with the help of thin-wall approximation. False vacuum bubbles have physical importance: a set of false vacuum bubbles might generate a negative energy bath and it has further theoretical implications.

Nucleation of vacuum bubbles in Brans-Dicke type theory

In this paper, we explore the nucleation of vacuum bubbles in the Brans-Dicke type theory of gravity. In the Euclidean signature, we evaluate the fields at the vacuum bubbles as solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion as well as the bubble nucleation probabilities by integrating the Euclidean action. We illustrate three possible ways to obtain vacuum bubbles: true vacuum bubbles for ω>-3/2, false vacuum bubbles for ω<-3/2, and false vacuum bubbles for ω>-3/2 when the vacuum energy of the false vacuum in the potential of the Einstein frame is less than that of the true vacuum. After the bubble is nucleated at the t=0 surface, we can smoothly interpolate the field combinations to some solutions in the Lorentzian signature and consistently continue their subsequent evolutions. Therefore, we conclude that, in general scalar-tensor theories like this Brans-Dicke type theories, which may include and represent certain features of string theory, vacuum bubbles come in false vacuum bubbles as well as in true vacuum bubbles, as long as a special condition is assumed on the potential.

RG flow of transport quantities

The RG flow equation of various transport quantities are studied in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, in the fixed as well as fluctuating background geometry both for the Maxwellian and DBI type of actions. The regularity condition on the flow equation of the conductivity at the horizon for the DBI action reproduces naturally the leading order result of {\it Hartnoll et al.}, [{\it JHEP}, {\bf 04}, 120 (2010)]. Motivated by the result of {\it van der Marel et al.}, [{\it science}, {\bf 425}, 271 (2003], we studied, analytically, the conductivity versus frequency plane by dividing it into three distinct parts: $ω<T, ω>T$ and $ω>> T$. In order to compare, we choose 3+1 dimensional bulk spacetime for the computation of the conductivity. In the $ω<T$ range, the conductivity does not show up the Drude like form in any spacetime dimensions. In the $ω> T$ range and staying away from the horizon, for the DBI action with unit dynamical exponent, non-zero magnetic field and charge density, the conductivity goes as $ω^{-2/3}$, whereas the phase of the conductivity, goes as, $ArcTan(Imσ^{xx}/Reσ^{xx})=π/6$ and $ArcTan(Imσ^{xy}/Reσ^{xy})=-π/3$. There exists a universal quantity at the horizon that is the phase angle of conductivity, which either vanishes or an integral multiple of $π$. Furthermore, we calculate the temperature dependence to the thermoelectric and the thermal conductivity at the horizon. The charge diffusion constant for the DBI action is studied.

Three Roads to Probe-Brane Superconductivity

We study a defect system of two parallel D5 probe branes in a large-N_c D3 background. Using the non-abelian DBI action, we study three different fields that can give rise to a superconducting phase transition: A vector (p-wave), a scalar corresponding to a non-trivial "separation"' of the branes in the (3+1) field theory directions and a scalar corresponding to a separation in the "internal" S^5 (both s-wave). Comparing these phases first in the α'^2 expansion, we find that the internal scalar has the largest critical temperature and is always thermodynamically preferred. Further, there is an interesting attractor behavior. Taking a simplified version of the full DBI action that preserves its regularity and geometry, we find that the divergences of the α'^2 expansion are resolved and some second order transitions turn into first order ones. In addition to some other changes of the phase diagram due to the structure of the DBI action, we observe that the ground state degeneracy of the unbroken theory is lifted. We also isolate the unphysical artifacts of our simplification.

Geodesic motions in extraordinary string geometry

The geodesic properties of the extraordinary vacuum string solution in (4+1) dimensions are analyzed by using Hamilton-Jacobi method. The geodesic motions show distinct properties from those of the static one. Especially, any freely falling particle can not arrive at the horizon or singularity. There exist stable null circular orbits and bouncing timelike and null geodesics. To get into the horizon {or singularity}, a particle need to follow a non-geodesic trajectory. We also analyze the orbit precession to show that the precession angle has distinct features for each geometry such as naked singularity, black string, and wormhole.

Holographic 1/Nc correction from the chiral condensate

We investigate a gravity solution containing the gravitational backreaction of the massive scalar field dual to the chiral condensate, which corresponds to $1/N_c$ correction. In general, condensation changes the vacuum structure, so the present dual geometry is appropriate to describe the chiral condensate vacuum in the gauge theory side. After constructing the dual geometry numerically and applying the hard wall model we study the effect of the $1/N_c$ correction on the lightest meson spectra, which improves the values for lightest meson masses into the observations. In addition, we investigate the chiral condensate dependence the binding energy of heavy quarkonium.

Instanton solutions mediating tunneling between the degenerate vacua in curved space

We investigate the instanton solution between the degenerate vacua in curved space. We show that there exist $O(4)$-symmetric solutions not only in de Sitter but also in both flat and anti-de Sitter space. The geometry of the new type of solutions is finite and preserves the $Z_2$ symmetry. The nontrivial solution corresponding to the tunneling is possible only if gravity is taken into account. The numerical solutions as well as the analytic computations using the thin-wall approximation are presented. We expect that these solutions do not have any negative mode as in the instanton solution.

Meson spectra in a gluon condensate background

We study the spectra of light mesons as well as the dissociation of a quarkonium and monopole-anti monopole bound state in a gluon condensate background. In order to describe the confining phase we introduce an IR cutoff in two ways, namely the hard wall and the braneless approaches. We find that the meson spectra strongly depend on the gluon condensate in the braneless approach, while they do not in the hard wall model. The latter result appears to be a more probable feature of QCD.

Notes on Properties of Holographic Strange Metals

We investigate properties of holographic strange metals in $p+2$-dimensions, generalizing the analysis performed in arXiv:0912.1061. The bulk spacetime is $p+2$-dimensional Lifshitz black hole, while the role of charge carriers is played by probe D-branes. We mainly focus on massless charge carriers, where most of the results can be obtained analytically. We obtain exact results for the free energy and calculate the entropy density, the heat capacity as well as the speed of sound at low temperature. We obtain the DC conductivity and DC Hall conductivity and find that the DC conductivity takes a universal form in the large density limit, while the Hall conductivity is also universal in all dimensions. We also study the resistivity in different limits and clarify the condition for the linear dependence on the temperature, which is a key feature of strange metals. We show that our results for the DC conductivity are consistent with those obtained via Kubo formula and we obtain the charge diffusion constant analytically. The corresponding properties of massive charge carriers are also discussed in brief.

Particle Probe of Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is probed through particle geodesics. Gravitational force of KS black hole becomes weaker than that of Schwarzschild around horizon and interior space. Particles can be always scattered or trapped in new closed orbits, unlike those falling forever in Schwarzschild black. The properties of null and timelike geodesics are classified with values of coupling constants. The precession rates of the orbits are evaluated. The time trajectories are also classified under different values of coupling constants for both null and timelike geodesics. Physical phenomena that may be observable are discussed.

Probing Smearing Effect by Point-Like Graviton in Plane-Wave Matrix Model

We investigate the interaction between flat membrane and point-like graviton in the plane-wave matrix model. The one-loop effective potential in the large distance limit is computed and is shown to be of r^{-3} type where r is the distance between two objects. This type of interaction has been interpreted as the one incorporating the smearing effect due to the configuration of flat membrane in plane-wave background. Our result supports this interpretation and provides one more evidence about it.

Quantum finite-size effects for dyonic magnons in the AdS_4 x CP^3

We compute quantum corrections to finite-size effects for various dyonic giant magnons in the AdS_4 x CP^3 in two different approaches. The off-shell algebraic curve method is used to quantize the classical string configurations in semi-classical way and to compute the corrections to the string energies. These results are compared with the F-term Lüscher formula based on the S-matrix of the AdS_4 / CFT_3. The fact that the two results match exactly provides another stringent test for the all-loop integrability conjecture and the exact S-matrix based on it.

Zero Sound in Effective Holographic Theories

We investigate zero sound in $D$-dimensional effective holographic theories, whose action is given by Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton terms. The bulk spacetimes include both zero temperature backgrounds with anisotropic scaling symmetry and their near-extremal counterparts obtained in 1006.2124 [hep-th], while the massless charge carriers are described by probe D-branes. We discuss thermodynamics of the probe D-branes analytically. In particular, we clarify the conditions under which the specific heat is linear in the temperature, which is a characteristic feature of Fermi liquids. We also compute the retarded Green's functions in the limit of low frequency and low momentum and find quasi-particle excitations in certain regime of the parameters. The retarded Green's functions are plotted at specific values of parameters in $D=4$, where the specific heat is linear in the temperature and the quasi-particle excitation exists. Domain wall universe in the Einstein-Born-Infeld theory

In this Letter, we discuss the dynamics of a domain wall universe embedded into the charged black hole spacetime of the Einstein-Born-Infeld (EBI) theory. There are four kinds of possible spacetime structures, i.e., those with no horizon, the extremal one, those with two horizons (as the Reissner-Nordstr$\rm{\ddot o}$m black hole), and those with a single horizon (as the Schwarzshild black hole). We derive the effective cosmological equations on the wall. In contrast to the previous works, we take the contribution of the electrostatic energy on the wall into account. By examining the properties of the effective potential, we find that a bounce can always happen outside the (outer) horizon. For larger masses of the black hole, the height of the barrier between the horizon and bouncing point in the effective potential becomes smaller, leading to longer time scales of bouncing process. These results are compared with those in the previous works.

The effect of gluon condensate on holographic heavy quark potential

The gluon condensate is very sensitive to the QCD deconfinement transition since its value changes drastically with the deconfinement transition. We calculate the gluon condensate dependence of the heavy quark potential in AdS/CFT to study how the property of the heavy quarkonium is affected by a relic of the deconfinement transition. We observe that the heavy quark potential becomes deeper as the value of the gluon condensate decreases. We interpret this as a dropping of the heavy quarkonium mass just above the deconfinement transition, which is similar to the results obtained from QCD sum rule and from a bottom-up AdS/QCD model.

The vacuum bubbles in de Sitter background and black hole pair creation

We study the possible types of the nucleation of vacuum bubbles. We classify vacuum bubbles in de Sitter background and present some numerical solutions. The thin-wall approximation is employed to obtain the nucleation rate and the radius of vacuum bubbles. With careful analysis we confirm that Parke's formula is also applicable to the large true vacuum bubbles. The nucleation of the false vacuum bubble in de Sitter background is also evaluated. The tunneling process in the potential with degenerate vacua is analyzed as the limiting cases of the large true vacuum bubble and false vacuum bubble. Next, we consider the pair creation of black holes in the background of bubble solutions. We obtain static bubble wall solutions of junction equation with black hole pair. The masses of created black holes are uniquely determined by the cosmological constant and surface tension on the wall. Finally, we obtain the rate of pair creation of black holes.

M-brane bound states and the supersymmetry of BPS solutions in the Bagger-Lambert theory

We continue our study of BPS equations and supersymmetric configurations in the Bagger-Lambert theory. The superalgebra allows three different types of central extensions which correspond to compounds of various M-theory objects: M2-branes, M5-branes, gravity waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles which intersect or have overlaps with the M2-branes whose dynamics is given by the Bagger-Lambert action. As elementary objects they are all 1/2-BPS, and multiple intersections of $n$-branes generically break the supersymmetry into $1/2^n$, as it is well known. But a particular composite of M-branes can preserve from 1/16 up to 3/4 of the original ${\cal N}=8$ supersymmetries as previously discovered. Lie algebra cohomology and group structure of gauge theories

We explicitly construct the adjoint operator of coboundary operator and obtain the Hodge decomposition theorem and the Poincaré duality for the Lie algebra cohomology of the infinite-dimensional gauge transformation group. We show that the adjoint of the coboundary operator can be identified with the BRST adjoint generator $Q^{\dagger}$ for the Lie algebra cohomology induced by BRST generator $Q$. We also point out an interesting duality relation - Poincaré duality - with respect to gauge anomalies and Wess-Zumino-Witten topological terms. We consider the consistent embedding of the BRST adjoint generator $Q^{\dagger}$ into the relativistic phase space and identify the noncovariant symmetry recently discovered in QED with the BRST adjoint Nöther charge $Q^{\dagger}$.
