Resonant Dynamics and the Instability of the Box Minkowski Model

We revisit the box Minkowski model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 221101 (2012)] and provide a strong argument that, subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition, it is unstable toward black hole formation for arbitrarily small generic perturbations. Using weakly nonlinear perturbation theory, we derive the resonant system, which compared to systems with the anti-de Sitter asymptotics, has extra resonant terms, and study its properties, including conserved quantities. We find that the generic solution of the resonant system becomes singular in finite time. Surprisingly, the additional resonant interactions do not significantly affect the singular evolution. Furthermore, we find that the interaction coefficients take a relatively simple form, making this a particularly attractive toy model of turbulent gravitational instability.

Characteristic approach to the soliton resolution

As a toy model for understanding the soliton resolution phenomenon we consider a characteristic initial boundary value problem for the 4$d$ equivariant Yang-Mills equation outside a ball. Our main objective is to illustrate the advantages of employing outgoing null (or asymptotically null) foliations in analyzing the relaxation processes due to the dispersal of energy by radiation. In particular, within this approach it is evident that the endstate of evolution must be non-radiative (meaning vanishing flux of energy at future null infinity). In our toy model such non-radiative configurations are given by a static solution (called the half-kink) plus an alternating chain of $N$ decoupled kinks and antikinks. We show numerically that the configurations $N=0$ (static half-kink) and $N=1$ (superposition of the static half-kink and the antikink which recedes to infinity) appear as generic attractors and we determine a codimension-one borderline between their basins of attraction. The rates of convergence to these attractors are analyzed in detail.

On the oscillations and future asymptotics of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type III cosmologies with a massive scalar field

We analyse spatially homogenous cosmological models of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type III with a massive scalar field as matter model. Our main result concerns the future asymptotics of these spacetimes and gives the dominant time behaviour of the metric and the scalar field for all solutions for late times. This metric is forever expanding in all directions, however in one spatial direction only at a logarithmic rate, while at a power-law rate in the other two. Although the energy density goes to zero, it is matter dominated in the sense that the metric components differ qualitatively from the corresponding vacuum future asymptotics. Our results rely on a conjecture for which we give strong analytical and numerical support. For this we apply methods from the theory of averaging in nonlinear dynamical systems. This allows us to control the oscillations entering the system through the scalar field by the Klein-Gordon equation in a perturbative approach.

The structure of the singular ring in Kerr-like metrics

The Kerr geometry is believed to represent the exterior spacetime of astrophysical black holes. We here re-analyze the geometry of Kerr-like metrics (Kerr, Kerr-Newman, Kerr-de Sitter, and Kerr-anti de Sitter), paying particular attention to the region near the singular set. We find that, although the Kretschmann scalar vanishes at the singular set along a given direction, a certain combination of curvature invariants diverges regardless of the direction of approach. We also find that the two-dimensional geometry induced by the spacetime metric on the orbits of the isometry group also possesses a singularity regardless of the direction of approach. Likewise, the two-dimensional geometry in the directions orthogonal to the isometry orbits is $C^{2}$-divergent, but extends continuously at the singular set as a cone with opening angle $4π$. We conclude by showing that tidal forces lead to infinite stresses on neighboring geodesics that approach the singular set, destroying any such observers in finite proper time. Those geodesics that come in from infinity and do not hit the singular set but approach it are found to need tremendous energy to get close to the singular set, experiencing an acceleration transversal to the equatorial plane which grows without bound when the minimal distance of approach goes to zero. While establishing these results, we also present an alternative description of some other known properties, as well as introducing toroidal coordinates that provide a hands-on description of the double-covering for the geometry near the singular set.

Threshold for blowup for the supercritical cubic wave equation

We consider the focusing cubic wave equation in the energy supercritical case, i.e., in dimensions $d \geq 5$. For this model an explicit nontrivial self-similar blowup solution was recently found by the first and third author in \cite{GlogicSchoerkhuber}. Furthermore, the solution is proven to be co-dimension one stable in $d=7$. In this paper, we study the equation from a numerical point of view. For $d=5$ and $d=7$ in the radial case, we provide evidence that this solution is at the threshold between generic ODE blowup and dispersion. In addition, we investigate the spectral problem that underlies the stability analysis and compute the spectrum in general supercritical dimensions.

Dynamics at the threshold for blowup for supercritical wave equations outside a ball

We consider spherically symmetric supercritical focusing wave equations outside a ball. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods, we show that the threshold for blowup is given by a codimension-one stable manifold of the unique static solution with exactly one unstable direction. We analyze in detail the convergence to this critical solution for initial data fine-tuned to the threshold.

Dynamics of Nonlinear Waves on Bounded Domains

This thesis is concerned with dynamics of conservative nonlinear waves on bounded domains. In general, there are two scenarios of evolution. Either the solution behaves in an oscillatory, quasiperiodic manner or the nonlinear effects cause the energy to concentrate on smaller scales leading to a turbulent behaviour. Which of these two possibilities occurs depends on a model and the initial conditions. In the quasiperiodic scenario there exist very special time-periodic solutions. They result for a delicate balance between dispersion and nonlinear interaction. The main body of this dissertation is concerned with construction (by means of perturbative and numerical methods) of time-periodic solutions for various nonlinear wave equations on bounded domains. While turbulence is mainly associated with hydrodynamics, recent research in General Relativity has also revealed turbulent phenomena. Numerical studies of a self-gravitating massless scalar field in spherical symmetry gave evidence that anti-de Sitter space is unstable against black hole formation. On the other hand there appeared many examples of asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions which evade turbulent behaviour and appear almost periodic for long times. We discuss here these two contrasting scenarios putting special attention to the construction and properties of strictly time-periodic solutions. We analyze different models where solutions of this type exist. Moreover, we describe similarities and differences among these models concerning properties of time-periodic solutions and methods used for their construction.

Resonant dynamics and the instability of anti-de Sitter spacetime

We consider spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant in five dimensions and analyze evolution of small perturbations of anti-de Sitter spacetime using the recently proposed resonant approximation. We show that for typical initial data the solution of the resonant system develops an oscillatory singularity in finite time. This result hints at a possible route to establishing instability of AdS under arbitrarily small perturbations.

What drives AdS unstable?

We calculate the spectrum of linear perturbations of standing wave solutions discussed in [Phys. Rev. D 87, 123006 (2013)], as the first step to investigate the stability of globally regular, asymptotically AdS, time-periodic solutions discovered in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111 051102 (2013)]. We show that while this spectrum is only asymptotically nondispersive (as contrasted with the pure AdS case), putting a small standing wave solution on the top of AdS solution indeed prevents the turbulent instability. Thus we support the idea advocated in previous works that nondispersive character of the spectrum of linear perturbations of AdS space is crucial for the conjectured turbulent instability.

Lecture Notes on Turbulent Instability of Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

In these lecture notes we discuss recently conjectured instability of anti-de Sitter space, resulting in gravitational collapse of a large class of arbitrarily small initial perturbations. We uncover the technical details used in the numerical study of spherically symmetric Einstein-massless scalar field system with negative cosmological constant that led to the conjectured instability.

Time-periodic solutions in Einstein AdS - massless scalar field system

We construct time-periodic solutions for a system of self-gravitating massless scalar field, with negative cosmological constant, in d+1 spacetime dimensions at spherical symmetry, both perturbatively and numerically. We estimate the convergence radius of the formally obtained perturbative series and argue that it is greater then zero. Moreover, this estimate coincides with the boundary of the convergence domain of our numerical method and the threshold for the black-hole formation. Then we confirm our results with a direct numerical evolution. This also gives strong evidence for nonlinear stability of the constructed time-periodic solutions.

Equivariant wave maps exterior to a ball

We consider the exterior Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for equivariant wave maps from 3+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime into the three-sphere. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods we show that, for a given topological degree of the map, all solutions starting from smooth finite energy initial data converge to the unique static solution (harmonic map). The asymptotics of this relaxation process is described in detail. We hope that our model will provide an attractive mathematical setting for gaining insight into dissipation-by-dispersion phenomena, in particular the soliton resolution conjecture.
