Three perspectives on categorical symmetric Howe duality

In this paper, we consider the categorical symmetric Howe duality introduced by Khovanov, Lauda, Sussan and Yonezawa. While originally defined from a purely diagrammatic perspective, this construction also has geometric and representation-theoretic interpretations, corresponding to certain perverse sheaves on spaces of quiver representations and the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over $\mathfrak{gl}_n$. In particular, we show that the "deformed Webster algebras" discussed in work of Khovanov-Lauda-Sussan-Yonezawa manifest a Koszul duality between blocks of the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, and the constructible sheaves on representations of a linear quiver invariant under a certain parabolic in the group that acts by changing bases. Furthermore, we show that this duality intertwines translation functors with a diagrammatic categorical action. Includes an appendix by the author and Jerry Guan.

Quantizations of conical symplectic resolutions I: local and global structure

We re-examine some topics in representation theory of Lie algebras and Springer theory in a more general context, viewing the universal enveloping algebra as an example of the section ring of a quantization of a conical symplectic resolution. While some modification from this classical context is necessary, many familiar features survive. These include a version of the Beilinson-Bernstein localization theorem, a theory of Harish-Chandra bimodules and their relationship to convolution operators on cohomology, and a discrete group action on the derived category of representations, generalizing the braid group action on category O via twisting functors. Our primary goal is to apply these results to other quantized symplectic resolutions, including quiver varieties and hypertoric varieties. This provides a new context for known results about Lie algebras, Cherednik algebras, finite W-algebras, and hypertoric enveloping algebras, while also pointing to the study of new algebras arising from more general resolutions.

Quantizations of conical symplectic resolutions II: category $\mathcal O$ and symplectic duality

We define and study category $\mathcal O$ for a symplectic resolution, generalizing the classical BGG category $\mathcal O$, which is associated with the Springer resolution. This includes the development of intrinsic properties parallelling the BGG case, such as a highest weight structure and analogues of twisting and shuffling functors, along with an extensive discussion of individual examples. We observe that category $\mathcal O$ is often Koszul, and its Koszul dual is often equivalent to category $\mathcal O$ for a different symplectic resolution. This leads us to define the notion of a symplectic duality between symplectic resolutions, which is a collection of isomorphisms between representation theoretic and geometric structures, including a Koszul duality between the two categories. This duality has various cohomological consequences, including (conjecturally) an identification of two geometric realizations, due to Nakajima and Ginzburg/Mirković-Vilonen, of weight spaces of simple representations of simply-laced simple algebraic groups. An appendix by Ivan Losev establishes a key step in the proof that $\mathcal O$ is highest weight.

On category $\mathcal{O}$ for affine Grassmannian slices and categorified tensor products

Truncated shifted Yangians are a family of algebras which naturally quantize slices in the affine Grassmannian. These algebras depend on a choice of two weights $λ$ and $μ$ for a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, which we will assume is simply-laced. In this paper, we relate the category $\mathcal{O}$ over truncated shifted Yangians to categorified tensor products: for a generic integral choice of parameters, category $\mathcal{O}$ is equivalent to a weight space in the categorification of a tensor product of fundamental representations defined by the third author using KLRW algebras. We also give a precise description of category $\mathcal{O}$ for arbitrary parameters using a new algebra which we call the parity KLRW algebra. In particular, we confirm the conjecture of the authors that the highest weights of category $\mathcal{O}$ are in canonical bijection with a product monomial crystal depending on the choice of parameters. This work also has interesting applications to classical representation theory. In particular, it allows us to give a classification of simple Gelfand-Tsetlin modules of $U(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ and its associated W-algebras.

Centers of KLR algebras and cohomology rings of quiver varieties

Attached to a weight space in an integrable highest weight representation of a simply-laced Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, there are two natural commutative algebras: the cohomology ring of a quiver variety and the center of a cyclotomic KLR algebra. In this note, we describe a natural geometric map between these algebras in terms of quantum coherent sheaves on quiver varieties. The cohomology ring of an algebraic symplectic variety can be interpreted as the Hochschild cohomology of a quantization of this variety in the sense of Bezrukavnikov and Kaledin. On the other hand, cyclotomic KLR algebras appear as Ext-algebras of certain particular sheaves, and thus its center receives a canonical map from the Hochschild cohomology of the category. We show that this map is an isomorphism in finite type, and injective in general. We further note that the Kirwan surjectivity theorem for quivers of finite type is an easy corollary of these results. The most important property of this map is its compatibility with actions of the current algebra on both the cohomology of quiver varieties and on the Hochschild cohomology of any category with a categorical action of $\mathfrak{g}$. The structure of these current algebra actions allow us to show the desired results.

Quiver Schur algebras and q-Fock space

We develop a graded version of the theory of cyclotomic q-Schur algebras, in the spirit of the work of Brundan-Kleshchev on Hecke algebras and of Ariki on q-Schur algebras. As an application, we identify the coefficients of the canonical basis on a higher level Fock space with q-analogues of the decomposition numbers of cyclotomic q-Schur algebras. We present cyclotomic q-Schur algebras as a quotient of a convolution algebra arising in the geometry of quivers; hence we call these quiver Schur algebras. These algebras are also presented diagrammatically, similar in flavor to a recent construction of Khovanov and Lauda. They are also manifestly graded and so equip the cyclotomic q-Schur algebra with a non-obvious grading. On the way we construct a graded cellular basis of this algebra, resembling the constructions for cyclotomic Hecke algebras by Mathas, Hu, Brundan and the first author. The quiver Schur algebra is also interesting from the perspective of higher representation theory. The sum of Grothendieck groups of certain cyclotomic quotients is known to agree with a higher level Fock space. We show that our graded version defines a higher q-Fock space (defined as a tensor product of level 1 q-deformed Fock spaces). Under this identification, the indecomposable projective modules are identified with the canonical basis and the Weyl modules with the standard basis. This allows us to prove the already described relation between decomposition numbers and canonical bases.

Knot invariants and higher representation theory I: diagrammatic and geometric categorification of tensor products

In this paper, we study 2-representations of 2-quantum groups (in the sense of Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda) categorifying tensor products of irreducible representations. Our aim is to construct knot homologies categorifying Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of knots for arbitrary representations, which will be done in a follow-up paper. We consider an algebraic construction of these categories, via an explicit diagrammatic presentation, generalizing the cyclotomic quotient of the quiver Hecke algebra. One of our primary results is that these categories coincide when both are defined. We also investigate finer structure of these categories. Like many similar representation-theoretic categories, they are standardly stratified and satisfy a double centralizer property with respect to their self-dual modules. The standard modules of the stratification play an important role, as Vermas do in more classical representation theory, as test objects for functors. The existence of these representations has consequences for the structure of previously studied categorifications; it allows us to prove the non-degeneracy of Khovanov and Lauda's 2-category (that its Hom spaces have the expected dimension) in all symmetrizable types, and that the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras are symmetric Frobenius.

Knot invariants and higher representation theory II: the categorification of quantum knot invariants

We construct knot invariants categorifying the quantum knot variants for all representations of quantum groups. We show that these invariants coincide with previous invariants defined by Khovanov for sl(2) and sl(3) and by Mazorchuk-Stroppel and Sussan for sl(n). Our technique uses categorifications of the tensor product representations of Kac-Moody algebras and quantum groups, constructed a prequel to this paper. These categories are based on the pictorial approach of Khovanov and Lauda. In this paper, we show that these categories are related by functors corresponding to the braiding and (co)evaluation maps between representations of quantum groups. Exactly as these maps can be used to define quantum invariants attached to any tangle, their categorifications can be used to define knot homologies.

Yangians and quantizations of slices in the affine Grassmannian

We study quantizations of transverse slices to Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian. The quantization is constructed using quantum groups called shifted Yangians --- these are subalgebras of the Yangian we introduce which generalize the Brundan-Kleshchev shifted Yangian to arbitrary type. Building on ideas of Gerasimov-Kharchev-Lebedev-Oblezin, we prove that a quotient of the shifted Yangian quantizes a scheme supported on the transverse slices, and we formulate a conjectural description of the defining ideal of these slices which implies that the scheme is reduced. This conjecture also implies the conjectural quantization of the Zastava spaces for PGL(n) of Finkelberg-Rybnykov.

Singular blocks of parabolic category O and finite W-algebras

We show that each integral infinitesimal block of parabolic category O (including singular ones) for a semi-simple Lie algebra can be realized as a full subcategory of a "thick" category O over a finite W-algebra for the same Lie algebra. The nilpotent used to construct this finite W-algebra is determined by the central character of the block, and the subcategory taken is that killed by a two-sided ideal depending on the original parabolic. The equivalences in question are induced by those of Milicic-Soergel and Losev. We also give a proof of a result of some independent interest: the singular blocks of parabolic category O can be geometrically realized as "partial Whittaker sheaves" on partial flag varieties.

Cramped subgroups and generalized Harish-Chandra modules

Let G be a reductive complex Lie group with Lie algebra g. We call a subgroup H of G {\bf cramped} if there is an integer b(G,H) such that each finite dimensional representation of G has a non-trivial invariant subspace of dimension less than b(G,H). We show that a subgroup is cramped if and only if the moment map from T^*(K/L) to k^* is surjective, where K and L are compact forms of G and H. We will use this in conjunction with sufficient conditions for crampedness given by Willenbring and Zuckerman (2004) to prove a geometric lemma on the intersections between adjoint orbits and Killing orthogonals to subgroups. We will also discuss applications of the techniques of symplectic geometry to the generalized Harish-Chandra modules introduced by Penkov and Zuckerman (2004), of which our results on crampedness are special cases.

Small linearly equivalent $G$-sets and a construction of Beaulieu

Two $G$-sets ($G$ a finite group) are called linearly equivalent over a commutative ring $k$ if the permutation representations $k[X]$ and $k[Y]$ are isomorphic as modules over the group algebra $kG$. Pairs of linearly equivalent non-isomorphic $G$-sets have applications in number theory and geometry. We characterize the groups $G$ for which such pairs exist for any field, and give a simple construction of these pairs. If $k$ is $\Q$, these are precisely the non-cyclic groups. For any non-cyclic group, we prove that there exist $G$-sets which are non-isomorphic and \lineq over $\Q$, of cardinality $\leq 3(#G)/2$. Also, we investigate a construction of P. Beaulieu which allows us to construct pairs of transitive linearly equivalent $S_n$-sets from arbitrary $G$-sets for an arbitrary group $G$. We show that this construction works over all fields and use it construct, for each finite set $\mc P$ of primes, $S_n$-sets linearly equivalent over a field $k$ if and only if the characteristic of $k$ lies in $\mc P$.

A Deodhar type stratification on the double flag variety

We describe a stratification on the double flag variety $G/B^+\times G/B^-$ of a complex semisimple algebraic group $G$ analogous to the Deodhar stratification on the flag variety $G/B^+$, which is a refinement of the stratification into orbits both for $B^+\times B^-$ and for the diagonal action of $G$, just as Deodhar's stratification refines the orbits of $B^+$ and $B^-$. We give a coordinate system on each stratum, and show that all strata are coisotropic subvarieties. Also, we discuss possible connections to the positive and cluster geometry of $G/B^+\times G/B^-$, which would generalize results of Fomin and Zelevinsky on double Bruhat cells and Marsh and Rietsch on double Schubert cells.

A geometric model for Hochschild homology of Soergel bimodules

An important step in the calculation of the triply graded link homology theory of Khovanov and Rozansky is the determination of the Hochschild homology of Soergel bimodules for SL(n). We present a geometric model for this Hochschild homology for any simple group G, as equivariant intersection homology of B x B-orbit closures in G. We show that, in type A these orbit closures are equivariantly formal for the conjugation T-action. We use this fact to show that in the case where the corresponding orbit closure is smooth, this Hochschild homology is an exterior algebra over a polynomial ring on generators whose degree is explicitly determined by the geometry of the orbit closure, and describe its Hilbert series, proving a conjecture of Jacob Rasmussen.

Khovanov-Rozansky homology via a canopolis formalism

In this paper, we describe a canopolis (i.e. categorified planar algebra) formalism for Khovanov and Rozansky's link homology theory. We show how this allows us to organize simplifications in the matrix factorizations appearing in their theory. In particular, it will put the equivalence of the original definition of Khovanov-Rozansky homology and the definition using Soergel bimodules in a more general context, allow us to give a new proof of the invariance of triply graded homology and give new analysis of the behavior of triply graded homology under the Reidemeister IIb move.
