Hamiltonian reduction for affine Grassmannian slices and truncated shifted Yangians

Generalized affine Grassmannian slices provide geometric realizations for weight spaces of representations of semisimple Lie algebras. They are also Coulomb branches, symplectic dual to Nakajima quiver varieties. In this paper, we prove that neighbouring generalized affine Grassmannian slices are related by Hamiltonian reduction by the action of the additive group. We also prove a weaker version of the same result for their quantizations, algebras known as truncated shifted Yangians.

Perfect bases in representation theory: three mountains and their springs

In order to give a combinatorial descriptions of tensor product multiplicites for semisimple groups, it is useful to find bases for representations which are compatible with the actions of Chevalley generators of the Lie algebra. There are three known examples of such bases, each of which flows from geometric or algebraic mountain. Remarkably, each mountain gives the same combinatorial shadow: the crystal B(infty) and the Mirkovic-Vilonen polytopes. In order to distinguish between the three bases, we introduce measures supported on these polytopes. We also report on the interaction of these bases with the cluster structure on the coordinate ring of the maximal unipotent subgroup.

Symplectic resolutions, symplectic duality, and Coulomb branches

Symplectic resolutions are an exciting new frontier of research in representation theory. One of the most fascinating aspects of this study is symplectic duality: the observation that these resolutions come in pairs with matching properties. The Coulomb branch construction allows us to produce and study many of these dual pairs. These notes survey much recent work in this area including quantization, categorification, and enumerative geometry. We particularly focus on ADE quiver varieties and affine Grassmannian slices.

Associated graded of Hodge modules and categorical sl_2 actions

One of the most mysterious aspects of Saito's theory of Hodge modules are the Hodge and weight filtrations that accompany the pushforward of a Hodge module under an open embedding. In this paper we consider the open embedding in a product of complementary Grassmannians given by pairs of transverse subspaces. The push-forward of the structure sheaf under this open embedding is an important Hodge module from the viewpoint of geometric representation theory and homological knot invariants. We compute the associated graded of this push-forward with respect to the induced Hodge filtration as well as the resulting weight filtration. The main tool is a categorical $\sl_2$ action on the category of $\D_h$-modules on Grassmannians. Along the way we also clarify the interaction of kernels for $\D_h$-modules with the associated graded functor. Both of these results may be of independent interest.

The Mirkovic-Vilonen basis and Duistermaat-Heckman measures

Using the geometric Satake correspondence, the Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles in the affine Grasssmannian give bases for representations of a semisimple group G . We prove that these bases are "perfect", i.e. compatible with the action of the Chevelley generators of the positive half of the Lie algebra g. We compute this action in terms of intersection multiplicities in the affine Grassmannian. We prove that these bases stitch together to a basis for the algebra C[N] of regular functions on the unipotent subgroup. We compute the multiplication in this MV basis using intersection multiplicities in the Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian, thus proving a conjecture of Anderson. In the third part of the paper, we define a map from C[N] to a convolution algebra of measures on the dual of the Cartan subalgebra of g. We characterize this map using the universal centralizer space of G. We prove that the measure associated to an MV basis element equals the Duistermaat-Heckman measure of the corresponding MV cycle. This leads to a proof of a conjecture of Muthiah. Finally, we use the map to measures to compare the MV basis and Lusztig's dual semicanonical basis. We formulate conjectures relating the algebraic invariants of preprojective algebra modules (which underlie the dual semicanonical basis) and geometric invariants of MV cycles. In the appendix, we use these ideas to prove that the MV basis and the dual semicanonical basis do not coincide in SL_6.

The quantum Hikita conjecture

The Hikita conjecture relates the coordinate ring of a conical symplectic singularity to the cohomology ring of a symplectic resolution of the dual conical symplectic singularity. We formulate a quantum version of this conjecture, which relates the quantized coordinate ring of the first variety to the quantum cohomology of a symplectic resolution of the dual variety. We prove this conjecture for hypertoric varieties and for the Springer resolution. Our paper includes an appendix, written by Ben Webster, which studies highest weights for quantizations of symplectic resolutions with isolated torus actions.

On category $\mathcal{O}$ for affine Grassmannian slices and categorified tensor products

Truncated shifted Yangians are a family of algebras which naturally quantize slices in the affine Grassmannian. These algebras depend on a choice of two weights $λ$ and $μ$ for a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, which we will assume is simply-laced. In this paper, we relate the category $\mathcal{O}$ over truncated shifted Yangians to categorified tensor products: for a generic integral choice of parameters, category $\mathcal{O}$ is equivalent to a weight space in the categorification of a tensor product of fundamental representations defined by the third author using KLRW algebras. We also give a precise description of category $\mathcal{O}$ for arbitrary parameters using a new algebra which we call the parity KLRW algebra. In particular, we confirm the conjecture of the authors that the highest weights of category $\mathcal{O}$ are in canonical bijection with a product monomial crystal depending on the choice of parameters. This work also has interesting applications to classical representation theory. In particular, it allows us to give a classification of simple Gelfand-Tsetlin modules of $U(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ and its associated W-algebras.

On a reducedness conjecture for spherical Schubert varieties and slices in the affine Grassmannian

We study spherical Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian. These Schubert varieties have a natural conjectural modular description due to Finkelberg-Mirković. This modular description is easily seen to be set-theoretically correct, but it is not obviously scheme-theoretically correct. We prove that this modular description is correct in many cases. We also link this modular description to the reducedness conjecture from Kamnitzer-Webster-Weekes-Yacobi for tranverse slices in the affine Grassmannian.

A combinatorial geometric Satake equivalence

The geometric Satake correspondence provides an equivalence of categories between the Satake category of spherical perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian and the category of representations of the dual group. In this note, we define a combinatorial version of the Satake category using irreducible components of fibres of the convolution morphism. We then prove an equivalence of coboundary categories between this combinatorial Satake category and the category of crystals of the dual group.

Webs and quantum skew Howe duality

We give a diagrammatic presentation in terms of generators mod relations of the representation category of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$. More precisely, we produce all the relations among $\rm{SL}_n$-webs, thus describing the full subcategory tensor-generated by fundamental representations $\bigwedge^k \mathbb{C}^n$ (this subcategory can be idempotent completed to recover the entire representation category). Our result answers a question posed by Kuperberg [arXiv:q-alg/9712003] and affirms conjectures of Kim [arXiv:math.QA/0310143] and Morrison [arXiv:0704.1503]. Our main tool is an application of quantum skew Howe duality.

Affine Mirković-Vilonen polytopes

Each integrable lowest weight representation of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra g has a crystal in the sense of Kashiwara, which describes its combinatorial properties. For a given g, there is a limit crystal, usually denoted by B(-\infty), which contains all the other crystals. When g is finite dimensional, a convex polytope, called the Mirković-Vilonen polytope, can be associated to each element in B(-\infty). This polytope sits in the dual space of a Cartan subalgebra of g, and its edges are parallel to the roots of g. In this paper, we generalize this construction to the case where g is a symmetric affine Kac-Moody algebra. The datum of the polytope must however be complemented by partitions attached to the edges parallel to the imaginary root δ. We prove that these decorated polytopes are characterized by conditions on their normal fans and on their 2-faces. In addition, we discuss how our polytopes provide an analog of the notion of Lusztig datum for affine Kac-Moody algebras. Our main tool is an algebro-geometric model for B(-\infty) constructed by Lusztig and by Kashiwara and Saito, based on representations of the completed preprojective algebra Λ of the same type as g. The underlying polytopes in our construction are described with the help of Buan, Iyama, Reiten and Scott's tilting theory for the category Λ-mod. The partitions we need come from studying the category of semistable Λ-modules of dimension-vector a multiple of δ.

Categorification of Lie algebras [d'apres Rouquier, Khovanov-Lauda]

Given a vector space with an action of a semi-simple Lie algebra, we can try to "categorify" this representation, which means finding a category where the generators of the Lie algebra act by functors. Such categorical representations arise naturally in geometric representation theory and in modular representation theory of symmetric groups. A framework for studying categorical representations was introduced by Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda. Their definitions are algebraic/diagrammatic, but are connected to the topology of quiver varieties by the work of Rouquier and Varagnolo-Vasserot. In this paper, we give a survey of the above circle of ideas.

Yangians and quantizations of slices in the affine Grassmannian

We study quantizations of transverse slices to Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian. The quantization is constructed using quantum groups called shifted Yangians --- these are subalgebras of the Yangian we introduce which generalize the Brundan-Kleshchev shifted Yangian to arbitrary type. Building on ideas of Gerasimov-Kharchev-Lebedev-Oblezin, we prove that a quotient of the shifted Yangian quantizes a scheme supported on the transverse slices, and we formulate a conjectural description of the defining ideal of these slices which implies that the scheme is reduced. This conjecture also implies the conjectural quantization of the Zastava spaces for PGL(n) of Finkelberg-Rybnykov.

Cyclic sieving, rotation, and geometric representation theory

We study rotation of invariant vectors in tensor products of minuscule representations. We define a combinatorial notion of rotation of minuscule Littelmann paths. Using affine Grassmannians, we show that this rotation action is realized geometrically as rotation of components of the Satake fibre. As a consequence, we have a basis for invariant spaces which is permuted by rotation (up to global sign). Finally, we diagonalize the rotation operator by showing that its eigenspaces are given by intersection homology of quiver varieties. As a consequence, we generalize Rhoades' work on the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Rank 2 affine MV polytopes

We give a realization of the infinity crystal for affine sl(2) using decorated polygons. The construction and proof are combinatorial, making use of Kashiwara and Saito's characterization of the infinity crystal in terms of the * involution. The polygons we use have combinatorial properties suggesting they are the analogues in this case of the Mirkovic-Vilonen polytopes defined by Anderson and the third author in finite type. Using Kashiwara's similarity of crystals we also give MV polytopes for $A_2^{(2)}$, the only other rank two affine Kac-Moody algebra.

Réflexions dans un cristal

Let g = n^- + h + n^+ be a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra. Let B(\infty) be the Kashiwara crystal of U_q(n^-), let λbe a dominant integral weight, let T_λ= {t_λ} be the crystal with one element of weight λ, and let B(λ) \subset B(\infty) \otimes T_λbe the crystal of the integrable representation of highest weight λ. We compute the descending string parameters of an element b \otimes t_λin B(λ) in terms of the Lusztig parameters of b.

Lectures on geometric constructions of the irreducible representations of GL_n

We give an exposition of three geometric constructions of the irreducible representations of GL_n. In particular, we discuss Borel-Weil theory, the Ginzburg construction, and the geometric Satake construction. We also explain how to deduce the Ginzburg construction from the geometric Satake equivalence. These are lecture notes for a lecture series at the Summer School on geometric representation theory and extended affine Lie algebras held at University of Ottawa in June 2009.

Categorical geometric skew Howe duality

We categorify the R-matrix isomorphism between tensor products of minuscule representations of U_q(sl(n)) by constructing an equivalence between the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the corresponding convolution products in the affine Grassmannian. The main step in the construction is a categorification of representations of U_q(sl(2)) which are related to representations of U_q(sl(n)) by quantum skew Howe duality. The resulting equivalence is part of the program of algebro-geometric categorification of Reshitikhin-Turaev tangle invariants developed by the first two authors.

Knot homology via derived categories of coherent sheaves II, sl(m) case

Using derived categories of equivariant coherent sheaves we construct a knot homology theory which categorifies the quantum sl(m) knot polynomial. Our knot homology naturally satisfies the categorified MOY relations and is conjecturally isomorphic to Khovanov-Rozansky homology. Our construction is motivated by the geometric Satake correspondence and is related to Manolescu's by homological mirror symmetry.
