Pseudo-rotations vs. Rotations

Continuing the study of Hamiltonian pseudo-rotations of projective spaces, we focus on the conjecture that the fixed-point data set (the actions and the linearized flows at one-periodic orbits) of a pseudo-rotation exactly matches that data for a suitable unique true rotation even though the two maps can have very different dynamics. We prove this conjecture in several instances, e.g., for strongly non-degenerate pseudo-rotations of ${{\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}}^2$ with some notable exceptions, which we call ghost pseudo-rotations. The existence of ghost pseudo-rotations is a completely open question. The conjecture is closely related to the properties of the action and index spectra of pseudo-rotations, and ghost pseudo-rotations, if they exist, satisfy all known restrictions on the fixed-point data for pseudo-rotations but these data are distinctly different from the data for any rotation. The main new ingredient of the proofs is purely combinatorial and of independent interest. This is the index divisibility theorem connecting the divisibility properties of the Conley--Zehnder index sequence for the iterates of a map with the properties of its spectrum.

From pseudo-rotations to holomorphic curves via quantum Steenrod squares

In the context of symplectic dynamics, pseudo-rotations are Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms with finite and minimal possible number of periodic orbits. These maps are of interest in both dynamics and symplectic topology. We show that a closed, monotone symplectic manifold, which admits a non-degenerate pseudo-rotation, must have a deformed quantum Steenrod square of the top degree element, and hence non-trivial holomorphic spheres. This result (partially) generalizes a recent work by Shelukhin and complements the results by the authors on non-vanishing Gromov-Witten invariants of manifolds admitting pseudo-rotations.

On the spectral characterization of Besse and Zoll Reeb flows

A closed contact manifold is called Besse when all its Reeb orbits are closed, and Zoll when they have the same minimal period. In this paper, we provide a characterization of Besse contact forms for convex contact spheres and Riemannian unit tangent bundles in terms of $S^1$-equivariant spectral invariants. Furthermore, for restricted contact type hypersurfaces of symplectic Euclidean spaces, we give a sufficient condition for the Besse property via the Ekeland-Hofer capacities.

Conley Conjecture Revisited

We show that whenever a closed symplectic manifold admits a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many simple periodic orbits, the manifold has a spherical homology class of degree two with positive symplectic area and positive integral of the first Chern class. This theorem encompasses all known cases of the Conley conjecture (symplectic CY and negative monotone manifolds) and also some new ones (e.g., weakly exact symplectic manifolds with non-vanishing first Chern class). The proof hinges on a general Lusternik-Schnirelmann type result that, under some natural additional conditions, the sequence of mean spectral invariants for the iterations of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism never stabilizes. We also show that for the iterations of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many periodic orbits the sequence of action gaps between the "largest" and the "smallest" spectral invariants remains bounded and, as consequence, establish some new cases of the $C^\infty$-generic existence of infinitely many simple periodic orbits.

Lusternik-Schnirelmann Theory and Closed Reeb Orbits

We develop a variant of Lusternik-Schnirelmann theory for the shift operator in equivariant Floer and symplectic homology. Our key result is that the spectral invariants are strictly decreasing under the action of the shift operator when periodic orbits are isolated. As an application, we prove new multiplicity results for simple closed Reeb orbits on the standard contact sphere, the unit cotangent bundle to the sphere and some other contact manifolds. We also show that the lower Conley--Zehnder index enjoys a certain recurrence property and revisit and reprove from a different perspective a variant of the common jump theorem of Long and Zhu. This is the second, combinatorial ingredient in the proof of the multiplicity results.

Fragility and Persistence of Leafwise Intersections

In this paper we study the question of fragility and robustness of leafwise intersections of coisotropic submanifolds. Namely, we construct a closed hypersurface and a sequence of Hamiltonians $C^0$-converging to zero such that the hypersurface and its images have no leafwise intersections, showing that some form of the contact type condition on the hypersurface is necessary in several persistence results. In connection with recent results in continuous symplectic topology, we also show that $C^0$-convergence of hypersurfaces, Hamiltonian diffeomorphic to each other, does not in general force $C^0$-convergence of the characteristic foliations.

On the Conley Conjecture for Reeb Flows

In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many closed Reeb orbits for a certain class of contact manifolds. This result can be viewed as a contact analogue of the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture. The manifolds for which the contact Conley conjecture is established are the pre-quantization circle bundles with aspherical base. As an application, we prove that for a surface of genus at least two with a non-vanishing magnetic field, the twisted geodesic flow has infinitely many periodic orbits on every low energy level.

Perfect Reeb flows and action-index relations

We study non-degenerate Reeb flows arising from perfect contact forms, i.e., the forms with vanishing contact homology differential. In particular, we obtain upper bounds on the number of simple closed Reeb orbits for such forms on a variety of contact manifolds and certain action-index resonance relations for the standard contact sphere. Using these results, we reprove a theorem due to Bourgeois, Cieliebak and Ekholm characterizing perfect Reeb flows on the standard contact three-sphere as non-degenerate Reeb flows with exactly two simple closed orbits.

The Conley Conjecture and Beyond

This is (mainly) a survey of recent results on the problem of the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and Reeb flows. We focus on the Conley conjecture, proved for a broad class of closed symplectic manifolds, asserting that under some natural conditions on the manifold every Hamiltonian diffeomorphism has infinitely many (simple) periodic orbits. We discuss in detail the established cases of the conjecture and related results including an analog of the conjecture for Reeb flows, the cases where the conjecture is known to fail, the question of the generic existence of infinitely many periodic orbits, and local geometrical conditions that force the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits. We also show how a recently established variant of the Conley conjecture for Reeb flows can be applied to prove the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits of a low-energy charge in a non-vanishing magnetic field on a surface other than a sphere.

Periodic Orbits of Hamiltonian Systems Linear and Hyperbolic at Infinity

We consider Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the Euclidean space, generated by compactly supported time-dependent perturbations of hyperbolic quadratic forms. We prove that, under some natural assumptions, such a diffeomorphism must have simple periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period when it has fixed points which are not necessary from a homological perspective.

Hyperbolic Fixed Points and Periodic Orbits of Hamiltonian Diffeomorphisms

We prove that for a certain class of closed monotone symplectic manifolds any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point must necessarily have infinitely many periodic orbits. Among the manifolds in this class are complex projective spaces, some Grassmannians, and also certain product manifolds such as the product of a projective space with a symplectically aspherical manifold of low dimension. A key to the proof of this theorem is the fact that the energy required for a Floer connecting trajectory to approach an iterated hyperbolic orbit and cross its fixed neighborhood is bounded away from zero by a constant independent of the order of iteration. This result, combined with certain properties of the quantum product specific to the above class of manifolds, implies the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits.

On Non-contractible Periodic Orbits of Hamiltonian Diffeomorphisms

We prove that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed symplectic manifold equipped with an atoroidal symplectic form has simple non-contractible periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period, provided that the diffeomorphism has a non-degenerate (or even isolated and homologically non-trivial) periodic orbit with non-zero homology class and the set of one-periodic orbits in that class is finite.

Action-Index Relations for Perfect Hamiltonian Diffeomorphisms

We show that the actions and indexes of fixed points of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many periodic points must satisfy certain relations, provided that the quantum cohomology of the ambient manifold meets an algebraic requirement satisfied for projective spaces, Grassmannians and many other manifolds. We also refine a previous result on the Conley conjecture for negative monotone symplectic manifolds, due to the second and third authors, and show that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of such a manifold must have simple periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period whenever its fixed points are isolated.

Action and Index Spectra and Periodic Orbits in Hamiltonian Dynamics

The main theme of this paper is the connection between the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits for a Hamiltonian system and the behavior of its action or index spectrum under iterations. We use the action and index spectra to show that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed, rational manifold with zero first Chern class has infinitely many periodic orbits and that, for a general rational manifold, the number of geometrically distinct periodic orbits is bounded from below by the ratio of the minimal Chern number and half of the dimension. These generalizations of the Conley conjecture follow from another result proved here asserting that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a symplectically degenerate maximum on a closed rational manifold has infinitely many periodic orbits. We also show that for a broad class of manifolds and/or Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms the minimal action--index gap remains bounded for some infinite sequence of iterations and, as a consequence, whenever a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism has finitely many periodic orbits, the actions and mean indices of these orbits must satisfy a certain relation. Furthermore, for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the n-dimensional complex projective space with exactly n+1 periodic orbits a stronger result holds. Namely, for such a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, the difference of the action and the mean index on a periodic orbit is independent of the orbit, provided that the symplectic structure on the projective space is normalized to be in the same cohomology class as the first Chern class.
