Dynamical implications of convexity beyond dynamical convexity

We establish sharp dynamical implications of convexity on symmetric spheres that do not follow from dynamical convexity. It allows us to show the existence of elliptic and non-hyperbolic periodic orbits and to furnish new examples of dynamically convex contact forms, in any dimension, that are not equivalent to convex ones via contactomorphisms that preserve the symmetry. Moreover, these examples are $C^1$-stable in the sense that they are actually not equivalent to convex ones via contactomorphisms that are $C^1$-close to those preserving the symmetry. We also show the multiplicity of symmetric non-hyperbolic and symmetric (not necessarily non-hyperbolic) closed Reeb orbits under suitable pinching conditions.

On contact invariants of non-simply connected Gorenstein toric contact manifolds

The first two authors showed in~\cite{AM1} how the Conley-Zehnder index of any contractible periodic Reeb orbit of a non-degenerate toric contact form on a good toric contact manifold with zero first Chern class, i.e. a Gorenstein toric contact manifold, can be explicitly computed using moment map data. In this paper we show that the same explicit method can be used to compute Conley-Zehnder indices of non-contractible periodic Reeb orbits. Under appropriate conditions, the (finite) number of such orbits in a given free homotopy class and with a given index is a contact invariant of the underlying contact manifold. We compute these invariants for two sets of examples that satisfy these conditions: $5$-dimensional contact manifolds that arise as unit cosphere bundles of $3$-dimensional lens spaces, and $2n+1$-dimensional Gorenstein contact lens spaces. As applications, we will see that these invariants can be used to show that diffeomorphic lens spaces might not be contactomorphic and that there are homotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of some lens spaces that do not contain any contactomorphism. Following a suggestion by one referee, we will also see that this type of applications can be proved alternatively by looking at the total Chern class of these canonical contact structures on lens spaces.

On the mean Euler characteristic of Gorenstein toric contact manifolds

We prove that the mean Euler characteristic of a Gorenstein toric contact manifold, i.e. a good toric contact manifold with zero first Chern class, is equal to half the normalized volume of the corresponding toric diagram and give some applications. A particularly interesting one, obtained using a result of Batyrev and Dais, is the following: twice the mean Euler characteristic of a Gorenstein toric contact manifold is equal to the Euler characteristic of any crepant toric symplectic filling, i.e. any toric symplectic filling with zero first Chern class.

Multiplicity of periodic orbits for dynamically convex contact forms

We give a sharp lower bound for the number of geometrically distinct contractible periodic orbits of dynamically convex Reeb flows on prequantizations of symplectic manifolds that are not aspherical. Several consequences of this result are obtained, like a new proof that every bumpy Finsler metric on $S^n$ carries at least two prime closed geodesics, multiplicity of elliptic and non-hyperbolic periodic orbits for dynamically convex contact forms with finitely many geometrically distinct contractible closed orbits and precise estimates of the number of even periodic orbits of perfect contact forms. We also slightly relax the hypothesis of dynamical convexity. A fundamental ingredient in our proofs is the common index jump theorem due to Y. Long and C. Zhu.

Brieskorn Manifolds, Positive Sasakian Geometry, and Contact Topology

Using $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology, in particular its mean Euler characteristic, of the natural filling of links of Brieskorn-Pham polynomials, we prove the existence of infinitely many inequivalent contact structures on various manifolds, including in dimension 5 the k-fold connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$ and certain rational homology spheres. We then apply our result to show that on these manifolds the moduli space of classes of positive Sasakian structures has infinitely many components. We also apply our results to give lower bounds on the number of components of the moduli space of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on certain homotopy spheres. Finally a new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics of real dimension 20 on $S^5$ is exhibited.

On the Conley Conjecture for Reeb Flows

In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many closed Reeb orbits for a certain class of contact manifolds. This result can be viewed as a contact analogue of the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture. The manifolds for which the contact Conley conjecture is established are the pre-quantization circle bundles with aspherical base. As an application, we prove that for a surface of genus at least two with a non-vanishing magnetic field, the twisted geodesic flow has infinitely many periodic orbits on every low energy level.

Local contact homology and applications

We introduce a local version of contact homology for an isolated periodic orbit of the Reeb flow and prove that its rank is uniformly bounded for isolated iterations. Several applications are obtained, including a generalization of Gromoll-Meyer's theorem on the existence of infinitely many simple periodic orbits, resonance relations and conditions for the existence of non-hyperbolic periodic orbits.

On the existence of three closed magnetic geodesics for subcritical energies

We consider exact magnetic flows on closed orientable surfaces. We show that for almost every energy $κ$ below Mañé's critical value of the universal covering there are always at least three distinct closed magnetic geodesics with energy $κ$. If in addition the energy level is assumed to be non-degenerate we prove existence of infinitely many closed magnetic geodesics.

Closed Reeb orbits on the sphere and symplectically degenerate maxima

We show that the existence of one simple closed Reeb orbit of a particular type (a symplectically degenerate maximum) forces the Reeb flow to have infinitely many periodic orbits. We use this result to give a different proof of a recent theorem of Cristofaro-Gardiner and Hutchings asserting that every Reeb flow on the standard contact three-sphere has at least two periodic orbits. Our methods are based on adapting the machinery originally developed for proving the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture to the contact setting.

Equivariant symplectic homology of Anosov contact structures

We show that the differential in positive equivariant symplectic homology or linearized contact homology vanishes for non-degenerate Reeb flows with a continuous invariant Lagrangian subbundle (e.g. Anosov Reeb flows). Several applications are given, including obstructions to the existence of these flows and abundance of periodic orbits for contact forms representing an Anosov contact structure.

Remarks on Lagrangian intersections in toric manifolds

We consider two natural Lagrangian intersection problems in the context of symplectic toric manifolds: displaceability of torus orbits and of a torus orbit with the real part of the toric manifold. Our remarks address the fact that one can use simple cartesian product and symplectic reduction considerations to go from basic examples to much more sophisticated ones. We show in particular how rigidity results for the above Lagrangian intersection problems in weighted projective spaces can be combined with these considerations to prove analogous results for all monotone toric symplectic manifolds. We also discuss non-monotone and/or non-Fano examples, including some with a continuum of non-displaceable torus orbits.

On the growth rate of leaf-wise intersections

We define a new variant of Rabinowitz Floer homology that is particularly well suited to studying the growth rate of leaf-wise intersections. We prove that for closed manifolds $M$ whose loop space is "complicated", if $Σ$ is a non-degenerate fibrewise starshaped hypersurface in $T^*M$ and $ϕ$ is a generic Hamiltonian diffeomorphism then the number of leaf-wise intersection points of $ϕ$ in $Σ$ grows exponentially in time. Concrete examples of such manifolds $M$ are the connected sum of two copies of $S^2 \times S^2$, the connected sum of $T^4$ and $CP^2$, or any surface of genus greater than one.

Positive topological entropy of Reeb flows on spherizations

Let M be a closed manifold whose based loop space is ``complicated''. Examples are rationally hyperbolic manifolds and manifolds whose fundamental group has exponential growth. We prove that the topological entropy of any Reeb flow on the spherization of T*M is positive. Moreover, given q in M, for almost every q' in M the number of Reeb orbits from the fiber over q to the fiber over q' grows exponentially in time. If M is a surface of higher genus, we also obtain exponential growth of the number of closed Reeb orbits.

Hofer-Zehnder capacity and Hamiltonian circle actions

We introduce the Hofer-Zehnder $G$-semicapacity $c_{HZ}^G(M,\om)$ of a symplectic manifold $(M,\om)$ with respect to a subgroup $G \subset π_1(M)$ ($c_{HZ}(M,\om) \leq c^G_{HZ}(M,\om)$) and prove that if $(M,\om)$ is tame and there exists an open subset $U \subset M$ admitting a Hamiltonian free circle action with order greater than two then $U$ has bounded Hofer-Zehnder $G$-semicapacity, where $G \subset π_1(M)$ is the subgroup generated by the orbits of the action, provided that the index of rationality of $(M,\om)$ is sufficiently great (for instance, if $[\om]|_{π_2(M)}=0$). We give a lot of applications of this result. Using P. Biran's decomposition theorem, we prove the following: let $(M^{2n},\Om)$ be a closed Kähler manifold ($n>2$) with $[\Om] \in H^2(M,\Z)$ and $Σ$ a complex hypersurface representing the Poincaré dual of $k[\Om]$, for some $k \in \N$. Suppose either that $\Om$ vanishes on $π_2(Σ)$ or that $k>2$. Then there exists a decomposition of $M\setminusΣ$ into an open dense connected subset with finite Hofer-Zehnder capacity and an isotropic CW-complex. Moreover, we prove that if $(M,Σ)$ is subcritical then $M\setminusΣ$ has finite Hofer-Zehnder capacity. We also show that given a hyperbolic surface $M$ and $TM$ endowed with the twisted symplectic form $\om_0 + π^*\Om$, where $\Om$ is the area form on $M$, then the Hofer-Zehnder $G$-semicapacity of the domain bounded by the hypersurface of kinetic energy $k$ minus the zero section $M_0$ is finite if $k\leq 1/2$, where $G \subset π_1(TM\setminus M_0)$ is the subgroup generated by the fibers of $SM$.
