GROWTH on S190426c II: GROWTH-India Telescope search for an optical counterpart with a custom image reduction and candidate vetting pipeline

S190426c / GW190426_152155 was the first probable neutron star - black hole merger candidate detected by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration. We undertook a tiled search for optical counterparts of this event using the 0.7m GROWTH-India Telescope. Over a period of two weeks, we obtained multiple observations over a 22.1 deg^2 area, with a 17.5% probability of containing the source location. Initial efforts included obtaining photometry of sources reported by various groups, and a visual search for sources in all galaxies contained in the region. Subsequently, we have developed an image subtraction and candidate vetting pipeline with ~ 94% efficiency for transient detection. Processing the data with this pipeline, we find several transients, but none that are compatible with kilonova models. We present the details of our observations, working of our pipeline, results from the search, and our interpretations of the non-detections that will work as a pathfinder during the O4 run of LVK.

India's first robotic eye for time domain astrophysics: the GROWTH-India telescope

We present the design and performance of the GROWTH-India telescope, a 0.7 m robotic telescope dedicated to time-domain astronomy. The telescope is equipped with a 4k back-illuminated camera giving a 0.82-degree field of view and sensitivity of m_g ~20.5 in 5-min exposures. Custom software handles observatory operations: attaining high on-sky observing efficiencies (>~ 80%) and allowing rapid response to targets of opportunity. The data processing pipelines are capable of performing PSF photometry as well as image subtraction for transient searches. We also present an overview of the GROWTH-India telescope's contributions to the studies of Gamma-ray Bursts, the electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave sources, supernovae, novae and solar system objects.

Investigating the observational properties of Type Ib supernova SN 2017iro

We report results of optical imaging and low-resolution spectroscopic monitoring of supernova (SN) 2017iro that occurred in the nearby ($\sim$\,31 Mpc) galaxy NGC 5480. The \ion{He}{1} 5876 Å\, feature present in the earliest spectrum (--\,7 d) classified it as a Type Ib SN. The follow-up observations span from --\,7 to +\,266 d with respect to the $B$-band maximum. With a peak absolute magnitude in $V$-band, ($M_{V}$)\,=\,$-17.76\pm0.15$ mag and bolometric luminosity (log$_{10}$\,L)\,=\,42.39\,$\pm$\, 0.09 erg s$^{-1}$, SN 2017iro is a moderately luminous Type Ib SN. The overall light curve evolution of SN 2017iro is similar to SN 2012au and SN 2009jf during the early (up to $\sim$100 d) and late phases ($>$150 d), respectively. The line velocities of both \ion{Fe}{2} 5169 Å\, and \ion{He}{1} 5876 Å\, are $\sim$\,9000 km s$^{-1}$ near the peak. The analysis of the nebular phase spectrum ($\sim$\,+209 d) indicates an oxygen mass of $\sim$\,0.35 M$_{\odot}$. The smaller [\ion{O}{1}]/[\ion{Ca}{2}] flux ratio of $\sim$\,1 favours a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass in the range $\sim$\,13--15 M$_{\odot}$, most likely in a binary system, similar to the case of iPTF13bvn. The explosion parameters are estimated by applying different analytical models to the quasi-bolometric light curve of SN 2017iro. $^{56}$Ni mass synthesized in the explosion has a range of $\sim$\,0.05\,--\,0.10 M$_{\odot}$, the ejecta mass $\sim$1.4\,--\,4.3 M$_{\odot}$ and the kinetic energy $\sim$\,0.8\,--\,1.9\,$\times$ 10$^{51}$ erg.

Metamaterial-based octave-wide terahertz bandpass filters

We present octave-wide bandpass filters in the terahertz (THz) region based on bilayer-metamaterial (BLMM) structures. The passband region has a super-Gaussian shape with a maximum transmittance approaching 70% and a typical stopband rejection of 20 dB. The design is based on a metasurface consisting of a metallic square-hole array deposited on a transparent polymer, which is stacked on top of an identical metasurface with a sub-wavelength separation. The superimposed metasurface structures were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and fabricated using a photolithography process. Experimental characterization of these structures between 0.3 to 5.8 THz is performed with a time-domain THz spectroscopy system. Good agreement between experiment and simulation results is observed. We also demonstrate that two superimposed BLMM (2BLMM) devices increase the steepness of the roll-offs to more than 85 dB/octave and enable a superior stopband rejection approaching 40 dB while the maximum transmittance remains above 64%. This work paves the way toward new THz applications, including the detection of THz pulses centered at specific frequencies, and an enhanced time-resolved detection sensitivity towards molecular vibrations that are noise dominated by a strong, off-resonant, driving field.

Orbital entangled antiferromagnetoc order and spin-orbit-distortion exciton in $\rm Sr_2VO_4$

With electron filling $n=1$ in the $\rm Sr_2VO_4$ compound, the octahedrally coordinated $t_{\rm 2g}$ orbitals are strongly active due to tetragonal distortion induced crystal field tuning by external agent such as pressure. Considering the full range of crystal field induced tetragonal splitting in a realistic three-orbital model, collective spin-orbital excitations are investigated using the generalized self consistent and fluctuation approach. The variety of self consistent states obtained including orbital entangled ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders reflects the rich spin-orbital physics resulting from the interplay between the band, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field, and Coulomb interaction terms. The behavior of the calculated energy scales of collective excitations with crystal field is consistent with that of the transition temperatures with pressure as obtained from susceptibility and resistivity anomalies in high-pressure studies.

Photometric calibrations and characterization of the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager, the first-light axial port instrument for the 3.6m DOT

In the present work, recent characterization results of the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager (a first light instrument of the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope; DOT) and photometric calibrations are discussed, along with measurements of the extinction coefficients and sky brightness values at the location of the 3.6m DOT site based on the imaging data taken between 2016 and 2021. For the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager, all given combinations of gains (1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 e$^-$/ADU) and readout noise values for the three readout speeds (100 kHz, 500 kHz, and 1 MHz) are verified using the sky flats and bias frames taken during early 2021; measured values resemble well with the theoretical ones. Using color-color and color-magnitude transformation equations, color coefficients ($α$) and zero-points ($β$) are determined to constrain and examine their long-term consistencies and any possible evolution based on $UBVRI$ observations of several Landolt standard fields observed during 2016-2021. Our present analysis exhibits consistency among estimated $α$ values within the 1$σ$ and does not show any noticeable trend with time. We also found that the photometric errors and limiting magnitudes computed using the CCD Imager data follow the simulated ones published earlier. The average extinction coefficients, their seasonal variations, and zenith night-sky brightness values for the moon-less nights for all ten Bessell and SDSS filters are also estimated and found comparable to those reported for other good astronomical sites.

Ransomware Detection using Process Memory

Ransomware attacks have increased significantly in recent years, causing great destruction and damage to critical systems and business operations. Attackers are unfailingly finding innovative ways to bypass detection mechanisms, whichencouraged the adoption of artificial intelligence. However, most research summarizes the general features of AI and induces many false positives, as the behavior of ransomware constantly differs to bypass detection. Focusing on the key indicating features of ransomware becomes vital as this guides the investigator to the inner workings and main function of ransomware itself. By utilizing access privileges in process memory, the main function of the ransomware can be detected more easily and accurately. Furthermore, new signatures and fingerprints of ransomware families can be identified to classify novel ransomware attacks correctly. The current research used the process memory access privileges of the different memory regions of the behavior of an executable to quickly determine its intent before serious harm can occur. To achieve this aim, several well-known machine learning algorithms were explored with an accuracy range of 81.38 to 96.28 percents. The study thus confirms the feasibility of utilizing process memory as a detection mechanism for ransomware.

SN 2017hpa: A carbon-rich type Ia supernova

We present the optical (UBVRI) and ultraviolet (Swift-UVOT) photometry, and optical spectroscopy of Type Ia supernova SN 2017hpa. We study broadband UV+optical light curves and low resolution spectroscopy spanning from $-13.8$ to $+108$~d from the maximum light in $B$-band. The photometric analysis indicates that SN 2017hpa is a normal type Ia with $Δm_{B}(15) = 0.98\pm0.16$ mag and $M_{B}=-19.45\pm0.15$ mag at a distance modulus of $μ= 34.08\pm0.09$ mag. The $(uvw1-uvv)$ colour evolution shows that SN 2017hpa falls in the NUV-blue group. The $(B-V)$ colour at maximum is bluer in comparison to normal type Ia supernovae. Spectroscopic analysis shows that the Si II 6355 absorption feature evolves rapidly with a velocity gradient, $\dot{v}=128\pm 7$ km s$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$. The pre-maximum phase spectra show prominent C II 6580 Å absorption feature. The C II 6580 Å line velocity measured from the observed spectra is lower than the velocity of Si II 6355 Å, which could be due to a line of sight effect. The synthetic spectral fits to the pre-maximum spectra using syn++ indicate the presence of a high velocity component in the Si II absorption, in addition to a photospheric component. Fitting the observed spectrum with the spectral synthesis code TARDIS, the mass of unburned C in the ejecta is estimated to be $\sim 0.019$~$M_{\odot}$. The peak bolometric luminosity is $L^{bol}_{peak} = 1.43\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The radiation diffusion model fit to the bolometric light curve indicates $0.61\pm0.02$ $M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni is synthesized in the explosion.

SN 2020ank: a bright and fast-evolving H-deficient superluminous supernova

We investigate the observational properties of a hydrogen-deficient superluminous supernova (SLSN) SN 2020ank (at z = 0.2485), with the help of early phase observations carried out between $-$21 and +52 d since $g$-band maximum. Photometrically, SN 2020ank is one of the brightest SLSN ($M_{g,peak}$ $\sim$ $-$21.84 $\pm$ 0.10 mag), having fast pre-peak rising and post-peak decaying rates. The bolometric light curve of SN 2020ank exhibits a higher peak luminosity ($L_{max}$) of $\sim$(3.9 $\pm$ 0.7) $\times$ 10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and appears to be symmetric around the peak with $L^{rise}_{max}$/e $\approx$ $L^{fall}_{max}$/e $\approx$ 15 d. The semi-analytical light-curve modelling using the MINIM code suggests a spin down millisecond magnetar with $P_i$ $\sim$2.2 $\pm$ 0.5 ms and $B$ $\sim$(2.9 $\pm$ 0.1) $\times$ $10^{14}$ G as a possible powering source for SN 2020ank. The possible magnetar origin and excess ultraviolet flux at early epochs indicate a central-engine based powering source for SN 2020ank. Near-peak spectra of SN 2020ank are enriched with the W-shaped O II features but with the weaker signatures of C II and Fe III. Using the estimated rise time of $\sim$27.9 d and the photospheric velocity of $\sim$12050 km s$^{-1}$, we constrain the ejecta mass to $\sim$7.2 $M_{\odot}$ and the kinetic energy of $\sim$6.3 $\times$ 10$^{51}$ erg. The near-peak spectrum of SN 2020ank exhibits a close spectral resemblance with that of fast-evolving SN 2010gx. The absorption features of SN 2020ank are blueshifted compared to Gaia16apd, suggesting a higher expansion velocity. The spectral similarity with SN 2010gx and comparatively faster spectral evolution than PTF12dam (a slow-evolving SLSN) indicate the fast-evolving behavior of SN 2020ank.

SN 2020sck: deflagration in a carbon-oxygen white dwarf

We present optical UBVRI photometry and low-to-medium resolution spectroscopic observations of type Iax SN 2020sck spanning -5.5 d to +67 d from maximum light in the B-band. From the photometric analysis we find $Δm_{\rm{B}}$(15) = 2.03$\pm$0.05 mag and $M_{\rm{B}}$=-17.81$\pm$0.22 mag. Radiation diffusion model fit to the quasi-bolometric light curve indicates 0.13$\pm$0.02 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni and 0.34 $M_{\rm \odot}$ of ejecta are synthesized in the explosion. Comparing the observed quasi-bolometric light curve with angle-averaged bolometric light curve of three-dimensional pure deflagration explosion of $M_{\rm{ch}}$ carbon-oxygen white dwarf, we find agreement with a model in which 0.16 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni and 0.37 $M_{\odot}$ of ejecta is formed. By comparing the +1.4 day spectrum of SN 2020sck with synthetic spectrum generated using SYN++, we find absorption features due to C II, C III and O I. These are unburned materials in the explosion and indicate a C-O white dwarf. One dimensional radiative transfer modeling of the spectra with TARDIS shows higher density in the ejecta near the photosphere and a steep decrease in the outer layers with an ejecta composition dominated mostly by C, O, Si, Fe, and Ni. The star formation rate of the host galaxy computed from the luminosity of the H$α$ ($λ$6563) line is 0.09 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ indicating a relatively young stellar environment.

Kilonova Luminosity Function Constraints based on Zwicky Transient Facility Searches for 13 Neutron Star Mergers

We present a systematic search for optical counterparts to 13 gravitational wave (GW) triggers involving at least one neutron star during LIGO/Virgo's third observing run. We searched binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star black hole (NSBH) merger localizations with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and undertook follow-up with the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration. The GW triggers had a median localization of 4480 deg^2, median distance of 267 Mpc and false alarm rates ranging from 1.5 to 1e-25 per yr. The ZTF coverage had a median enclosed probability of 39%, median depth of 20.8mag, and median response time of 1.5 hr. The O3 follow-up by the GROWTH team comprised 340 UVOIR photometric points, 64 OIR spectra, and 3 radio. We find no promising kilonova (radioactivity-powered counterpart) and we convert the upper limits to constrain the underlying kilonova luminosity function. Assuming that all kilonovae are at least as luminous as GW170817 at discovery (-16.1mag), we calculate our joint probability of detecting zero kilonovae is only 4.2%. If we assume that all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag (extrapolated peak magnitude of GW170817) and fade at 1 mag/day (similar to GW170817), the joint probability of zero detections is 7%. If we separate the NSBH and BNS populations, the joint probability of zero detections, assuming all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag, is 9.7% for NSBH and 7.9% for BNS mergers. Moreover, <57% (<89%) of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag assuming flat (fading) evolution, at 90% confidence. If we further account for the online terrestrial probability for each GW trigger, we find that <68% of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag. Comparing to model grids, we find that some kilonovae must have Mej < 0.03 Msun or Xlan>1e-4 or phi>30deg to be consistent with our limits. (Abridged)

Optical studies of two stripped envelope supernovae SN 2015ap (Type Ib) and SN 2016P (Type Ic)

We present the photometric and spectroscopic studies of a Type Ib SN 2015ap and a Type Ic SN 2016P. SN 2015ap is one of the bright (M$_{V}$ = $-$18.04 mag) Type Ib while SN 2016P lies at an average value among the Type Ic SNe (M$_{V}$ = $-$17.53 mag). Bolometric light curve modelling of SNe 2015ap and 2016P indicates that both the SNe are powered by $^{56}$Ni + magnetar model with $^{56}$Ni masses of 0.01 M$_{\odot}$ and 0.002 M$_{\odot}$, ejecta masses of 3.75 M$_{\odot}$ and 4.66 M$_{\odot}$, spin period P$_{0}$ of 25.8 ms and 36.5 ms and magnetic field B$_{p}$ of 28.39 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ Gauss and 35.3 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ Gauss respectively. The early spectra of SN 2015ap shows prominent lines of He with a "W" feature due to Fe complexes while other lines of Mg II, Na I and Si II are present in both SNe 2015ap and 2016P. Nebular phase [O I] profile indicates an asymmetric profile in SN 2015ap. The [O I]/[Ca II] ratio and nebular spectral modelling of SN 2015ap hints towards a progenitor mass between 12 $-$ 20 M$_{\odot}$.

Perturbations in Tachyon Dark Energy and their Effect on Matter Clustering

A non-canonical scalar tachyon field is a viable candidate for dark energy and has been found to be in good agreement with observational data. Background data alone cannot completely rule out degeneracy between this model and others. To further constrain the parameters, apart from the distance measurements, we study perturbations in the tachyon scalar field and how they affect matter clustering. We consider two tachyon potentials for this study, an inverse square potential and an exponential potential. We study the evolution of the gravitational potential, matter density contrast, and dark energy density contrast, and compare them with the evolution in the $ΛCDM $ model. Although perturbations in dark energy at sub-Hubble scales are negligible in comparison with matter perturbations, they cannot be ignored at Hubble and super-Hubble scales ($λ_p > 1000$ Mpc). We also study the evolution of growth function and growth rate of matter, and find that the growth rate is significantly suppressed in dark energy dominated era with respect to the growth rate for $ΛCDM$ model. A comparison of these models with Redshift Space Distortion growth rate data is presented by way of calculating $fσ_8(z)$. There is a tension of $2.9σ$ ($2.26σ$ ) between growth rate data and Planck-2015 (Planck-2018) Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation data for $ΛCDM$ model. We present constraints on free parameters of these models and show that perturbations in the tachyon scalar field reduce this tension between different data sets.

Flash ionization signatures in the type Ibn supernova SN 2019uo

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the type Ibn supernova (SN) 2019uo, the second ever SN Ibn with flash ionization (He II, C III, N III) features in its early spectra. SN 2019uo displays a rapid post-peak luminosity decline of 0.1 mag d$^{-1}$ similar to most of the SNe Ibn, but is fainter ($M^V_{max} = -18.30 \pm 0.24$ mag) than a typical SN Ibn and shows a color evolution that places it between SNe Ib and the most extreme SNe Ibn. SN 2019uo shows P-cygni He I features in the early spectra which gradually evolves and becomes emission dominated post peak. It also shows faster evolution in line velocities as compared to most other members of the type Ibn subclass. The bolometric light curve is fairly described by a $^{56}$Ni + circumstellar interaction model.

Electronic structure, spin excitations, and orbital ordering in a three-orbital model for iron pnictides

A three-orbital itinerant-electron model involving d_{xz}, d_{yz} and d_{xy} Fe 3d orbitals is proposed for iron pnictides towards understanding the (π,0) ordered magnetism and magnetic excitations in these materials. It is shown that this model at half filling yields a gapped (π,0) magnetic state with high degree of robustness and stability, and simultaneously reproduces several experimentally observed features such as the electronic structure, spin excitations, as well as the ferro orbital order between the d_{xz} and d_{yz} orbitals.

Magneto-orbital coupling in iron pnictides

A magneto-orbital coupling mechanism is proposed to account for the weak energy gap at the Fermi energy in the $(π,0)$ ordered SDW state of a realistic three band model for iron pnictides involving $d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$, and $d_{xy}$ Fe orbitals. The orbital mixing terms between the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ orbitals, which are important in reproducing the orbital composition of the elliptical electron pockets at $(\pm π,0)$ and $(0,\pm π)$, are shown to play a key role in the energy gap formation in the SDW state.

Multi-orbital quantum antiferromagnetism in iron pnictides --- effective spin couplings and quantum corrections to sublattice magnetization

Towards understanding the multi-orbital quantum antiferromagnetism in iron pnictides, effective spin couplings and spin fluctuation induced quantum corrections to sublattice magnetization are obtained in the $(π,0)$ AF state of a realistic three band interacting electron model involving $xz$, $yz$, and $xy$ Fe 3d orbitals. The $xy$ orbital is found to be mainly responsible for the generation of strong ferromagnetic spin coupling in the $b$ direction, which is critically important to fully account for the spin wave dispersion as measured in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The ferromagnetic spin coupling is strongly suppressed as the $xy$ band approaches half filling, and is ascribed to particle-hole exchange in the partially filled $xy$ band. The strongest AF spin coupling in the $a$ direction is found to be in the orbital off diagonal sector involving the $xz$ and $xy$ orbitals. First order quantum corrections to sublattice magnetization are evaluated for the three orbitals, and yield a significant $37\%$ average reduction from the Hartree-Fock value.

Orbital order, spin waves, and doping effects in the $(π,0)$ SDW state --- comparative study of the three band models for iron pnictides

Aimed at identifying the role of microscopic Hamiltonian parameters on spin wave excitations, orbital order, and magnetic moments in the $(π,0)$ SDW state, two different three band models for iron pnictides are compared --- one at two-third filling ($n=4$) and another at half filling $(n=3)$ --- both of which yield qualitatively correct Fermi surface structure in the paramagnetic state. Spin wave analysis of the model at $n=4$ shows instability of the SDW state, which is attributed to weakly developed magnetic moments and weak magnetic couplings due to overfilling, as inferred from the observed stabilization of the SDW state and enhancement of magnetic excitation energies upon hole doping. In contrast, the model at $n=3$ (half filling) yields a gapped SDW state with well developed magnetic moments and the calculated spin wave excitations are in excellent agreement with INS experiments. The sign of the orbital order ($n_{xz} - n_{yz} \approx +0.2$) is also in agreement with experiments. Both the zone boundary spin wave energies in the F and AF directions as well as the orbital order are shown to peak near half filling, highlighting the correlation between orbital order and SDW state stabilization.

The role of orbital order in the stabilization of the $(π,0)$ ordered magnetic state in a minimal two-band model for iron pnictides

Spin wave excitations and stability of the ($π,0$) ordered magnetic state are investigated in a minimal two-band itinerant-electron model for iron pnictides. Presence of hopping anisotropy generates a strong ferro-orbital order in the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ Fe orbitals. The orbital order sign is as observed in experiments. The induced ferro-orbital order strongly enhances the spin wave energy scale and stabilizes the magnetic state by optimizing the strength of the emergent AF and F spin couplings through optimal band fillings in the two orbitals. The calculated spin-wave dispersion is in quantitative agreement with neutron scattering measurements. Finite inter-orbital Hund's coupling is shown to further enhance the spin wave energies state by coupling the two magnetic sub-systems. A more realistic two-band model with less hopping anisotropy is also considered which yields not only the circular hole pockets, also correct ferro-orbital order and emergent F spin coupling.

Magnon self energy in the correlated ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model: spin-charge coupling effects on magnon excitations in manganites

Magnon self energy due to spin-charge coupling is calculated for the correlated ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model using a diagrammatic expansion scheme. Systematically incorporating correlation effects in the form of self-energy and vertex corrections, the expansion scheme explicitly preserves the continuous spin rotation symmetry and hence the Goldstone mode. Due to a near cancellation of the correlation-induced quantum correction terms at intermediate coupling and optimal band filling relevant for ferromagnetic manganites, the renormalized magnon energies for the correlated FKLM are nearly independent of correlation term. Even at higher band fillings, despite exhibiting overall non-Heisenberg behavior, magnon dispersion in the Γ-X direction retains nearly Heisenberg form. Therefore, the experimentally observed doping dependent zone-boundary magnon softening must be ascribed to spin-orbital coupling effects.

An effective quantum parameter for strongly correlated metallic ferromagnets

The correlated motion of electrons in multi-orbital metallic ferromagnets is investigated in terms of a realistic Hubbard model with {\cal N}-fold orbital degeneracy and arbitrary intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions U and J using a Goldstone-mode-preserving non-perturbative scheme. An effective quantum parameter '\hbar'=\frac{U^2+({\cal N}-1)J^2}{(U+({\cal N}-1)J)^2} is obtained which determines, in analogy with 1/S for quantum spin systems and 1/N for the N-orbital Hubbard model, the strength of correlation-induced quantum corrections to magnetic excitations. The rapid suppression of this quantum parameter with Hund's coupling J, especially for large {\cal N}, provides fundamental insight into the phenomenon of strong stabilization of metallic ferromagnetism by orbital degeneracy and Hund's coupling. This approach is illustrated for the case of ferromagnetic iron and the half metallic Heusler alloy Co_2 Mn Si. For realistic values for iron, the calculated spin stiffness and Curie temperature values obtained are in quantitative agreement with measurements. Significantly, the contribution of long wavelength modes is shown to yield a nearly ~25% reduction in the calculated Curie temperature. Finally, an outline is presented for extending the approach to generic multi-band metallic ferromagnets including realistic band-structure features of non-degenerate orbitals and inter-orbital hopping as obtained from LDA calculations.

Exact eigenstate analysis of finite-frequency conductivity in graphene

We employ the exact eigenstate basis formalism to study electrical conductivity in graphene, in the presence of short-range diagonal disorder and inter-valley scattering. We find that for disorder strength, $W \ge$ 5, the density of states is flat. We, then, make connection, using the MRG approach, with the work of Abrahams \textit{et al.} and find a very good agreement for disorder strength, $W$ = 5. For low disorder strength, $W$ = 2, we plot the energy-resolved current matrix elements squared for different locations of the Fermi energy from the band centre. We find that the states close to the band centre are more extended and falls of nearly as $1/E_l^{2}$ as we move away from the band centre. Further studies of current matrix elements versus disorder strength suggests a cross-over from weakly localized to a very weakly localized system. We calculate conductivity using Kubo Greenwood formula and show that, for low disorder strength, conductivity is in a good qualitative agreement with the experiments, even for the on-site disorder. The intensity plots of the eigenstates also reveal clear signatures of puddle formation for very small carrier concentration. We also make comparison with square lattice and find that graphene is more easily localized when subject to disorder.

Magnetic excitations in iron pnictides

Spin wave dispersion and damping are investigated in the metallic SDW state of different itinerant electron models including a small interlayer hopping. Magnetic excitations in iron pnictides are shown to be well understood in terms of physical mechanisms characteristic of metallic magnets, such as carrier-induced ferromagnetic spin couplings, intra-band particle-hole excitations, and the spin-charge coupling mechanism, which is also important in ferromagnetic manganites.

Role of Hund's coupling in stabilization of the (0,pi) ordered SDW state within the minimal two-band model for iron pnictides

Spin wave excitations and stability of the (0,pi) ordered SDW state are investigated within the minimal two-band model for iron pnictides including a Hund's coupling term. The SDW state is shown to be stable in two distinct doping regimes --- finite hole doping in the lower SDW band for small second neighbour hoppings, and small electron doping in the upper SDW band for comparable first and second neighbour hoppings. In both cases, Hund's coupling strongly stabilizes the SDW state due to generation of additional ferromagnetic spin couplings involving the inter-orbital part of the particle-hole propagator. Spin wave energies for the two-band model are very similar to the one-band t-t' Hubbard model results obtained earlier, and are in agreement with inelastic neutron scattering studies of iron pnictides.

Signature effects of spin clustering and distribution of spin couplings on magnetization behaviour in Ni-Fe-Mo and Ni-Fe-W alloys

The spontaneous magnetization as a function of temperature is investigated for a number of disordered Ni-Fe-Mo and Ni-Fe-W alloys using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, with a focus on the low-T behavior as well as the critical exponents associated with the magnetic phase transition. While the low-T magnetization is found to be well described by Bloch's T^{3/2} law, an extraordinary enhancement of the spin-wave parameter B and the reduced coefficient B_{3/2}=BT_C ^{3/2} are observed with increasing Fe dilution as compared to conventional 3d ferromagnets, whereas the critical amplitudes are found to decrease systematically. Recent locally self-consistent calculations of finite-temperature spin dynamics in a generic diluted magnet provide an understanding in terms of two distinct energy scales associated with weakly coupled bulk spins in the FM matrix and strongly coupled cluster spins. In view of similar behaviour observed in diluted magnetic semiconductors and other ferromagnetic alloys, it is proposed that these distinctive features corresponding to the three important temperature regimes provide macroscopic indicators of signature effects of spin clustering on magnetization behaviour in disordered ferromagnets.

Onset and melting of local orbital order

The onset and melting of locally staggered charge/orbital correlations is investigated within a two-orbital correlated electron model with inter-orbital and inter-site Coulomb interactions. Beyond the critical doping concentration x_c ~ 0.2, the (pi,pi,pi) staggered orbital order in the ferromagnet is found to be stabilized at finite temperature. The CE-type orbital correlation exhibits a sharp onset close to the Curie temperature and rapid thermal melting, which provides quantitative understanding of the (pi/2,pi/2,0) feature observed near T_c in neutron scattering experiments. In the zig-zag AF state, the CE-type orbital correlations are found to be even more readily stabilized, but only within a narrow doping regime around x=0.5.

Orbital fluctuations, spin-orbital coupling, and anomalous magnon softening in an orbitally degenerate ferromagnet

The correlated motion of electrons in the presence of strong orbital fluctuations and correlations is investigated with respect to magnetic couplings and excitations in an orbitally degenerate ferromagnet. Introduction of the orbital degree of freedom results in a class of diagrams representing spin-orbital coupling which become particularly important near the orbital ordering instability. Low-energy staggered orbital fluctuation modes, particularly with momentum near (π/2,π/2,0) (corresponding to CE-type orbital correlations), are shown to generically yield strong intrinsically non-Heisenberg (1-\cos q)^2 magnon self energy correction, resulting in no spin stiffness reduction, but strongly suppressed zone-boundary magnon energies in the Gamma-X direction. The zone-boundary magnon softening is found to be strongly enhanced with increasing hole doping and for narrow-band materials, which provides insight into the origin of zone-boundary anomalies observed in ferromagnetic manganites.

Spin-charge and spin-orbital coupling effects on spin dynamics in ferromagnetic manganites

Correlation-induced spin-charge and spin-orbital coupling effects on spin dynamics in ferromagnetic manganites are calculated with realistic parameters in order to provide a quantitative comparison with experimental results for spin stiffness, magnon dispersion, magnon damping, anomalous zone-boundary magnon softening, and Curie temperature. The role of orbital degeneracy, orbital ordering, and orbital correlations on spin dynamics in different doping regimes is highlighted.

Orbital degeneracy, Hund's coupling, and band ferromagnetism: effective quantum parameter, suppression of quantum corrections, and enhanced stability

An effective quantum parameter is obtained for the band ferromagnet in terms of orbital degeneracy and Hund's coupling. This quantum parameter determines, in analogy with 1/N for the generalized Hubbard model and 1/S for quantum spin systems, the strength of quantum corrections to spin stiffness and spin-wave energies. Quantum corrections are obtained by incorporating correlation effects in the form of self-energy and vertex corrections within a spin-rotationally-symmetric approach in which the Goldstone mode is explicitly preserved order by order. It is shown that even a relatively small Hund's coupling is rather efficient in strongly suppressing quantum corrections, especially for large N, resulting in strongly enhanced stability of the ferromagnetic state. This mechanism for the enhancement of ferromagnetism by Hund's coupling implicitly involves a subtle interplay of lattice, dimensionality, band dispersion, spectral distribution, and band filling effects.

Clustering induced suppression of ferromagnetism in diluted magnets

Ferromagnetism in diluted magnets in the compensated regime p << x is shown to be suppressed by the formation of impurity spin clusters. The majority bulk spin couplings are shown to be considerably weakened by the preferential accumulation of holes in spin clusters, resulting in low-energy magnon softening and enhanced low-temperature decay of magnetic order. A locally self-consistent magnon renormalization analysis of spin dynamics shows that although strong intra-cluster correlations tend to prolong global order, T_c is still reduced compared to the ordered case.

Spin waves in a band ferromagnet: spin-rotationally symmetric study with self-energy and vertex corrections

First-order quantum corrections to the transverse spin-fluctuation propagator are obtained within a systematic inverse-degeneracy 1/N expansion, which provides a spin-rotationally symmetric scheme for including self-energy and vertex corrections while preserving the Goldstone mode. An expression is obtained for the spin-wave stiffness constant including all first-order quantum corrections, and the dominant contribution is shown to yield a strong reduction due to a correlation-induced enhancement in the exchange-energy gain upon spin twisting. The quantum reduction factor U/W highlights the subtlety in the characteristic competition in a band ferromagnet between interaction U and bandwidth W. Quantum corrections also yield an intrinsic spin-wave damping mechanism due to coupling between spin and charge fluctuations.

Anisotropic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice -- spin dynamics in Ho Mn O_3

The recent neutron-scattering data for spin-wave dispersion in $\rm Ho Mn O_3$ are well described by an anisotropic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice with a planar (XY) spin anisotropy. Best fit indicates that magnetic excitations in $\rm Ho Mn O_3$ correspond to the strong-coupling limit $U/t > \sim 15$, with planar exchange energy $J=4t^2/U \simeq 2.5$meV and planar anisotropy $ΔU \simeq 0.35$meV.

Ferromagnetism in the t-t' Hubbard model: interplay of lattice, band dispersion, and interaction effects studied within a Goldstone-mode preserving scheme

Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model is investigated on sc, bcc, and fcc lattices using a systematic inverse-degeneracy ($1/{\cal N}$) expansion which incorporates self-energy and vertex corrections such that spin-rotation symmetry and the Goldstone mode are explicitly preserved. First-order quantum corrections to magnon energies are evaluated for several cases, providing a comprehensive picture of the interplay of lattice, band dispersion, and interaction effects on the stability of the ferromagnetic state with respect to both long- and short-wavelength fluctuations. Our results support the belief that ferromagnetism is a generic feature of the Hubbard model at intermediate and strong coupling provided the DOS is sufficiently asymmetric and strongly peaked near band edge, as for fcc lattice with finite $t'$. For short-wavelength modes, behavior of a characteristic energy scale $ω^* \sim T_c$ (magnon-DOS-peak energy) is in excellent agreement with the $T_c$ vs. $n$ behavior within DMFT, both with respect to the stable range of densities ($0.20 < n < 0.85$) as well as the optimal density $n=0.65$. However, our finding of vanishing spin stiffness near optimal density highlights the role of long-wavelength fluctuations in further reducing the stable range of densities.
