Bayes posterior convergence for loss functions via almost additive Thermodynamic Formalism

Statistical inference can be seen as information processing involving input information and output information that updates belief about some unknown parameters. We consider the Bayesian framework for making inferences about dynamical systems from ergodic observations, where the Bayesian procedure is based on the Gibbs posterior inference, a decision process generalization of standard Bayesian inference where the likelihood is replaced by the exponential of a loss function. In the case of direct observation and almost-additive loss functions, we prove an exponential convergence of the a posteriori measures a limit measure. Our estimates on the Bayes posterior convergence for direct observation are related and extend those in a recent paper by K. McGoff, S. Mukherjee and A. Nobel. Our approach makes use of non-additive thermodynamic formalism and large deviation properties instead of joinings.

The involution kernel and the dual potential for functions in the Walters family

Our notation: Points in $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{Z}-\{0\}} =\{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}\times \{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}=Ω^{-} \times Ω^{+}$, are denoted by $( y|x) =(...,y_2,y_1|x_1,x_2,...)$, where $(x_1,x_2,...) \in \{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}$, and $(y_1,y_2,...) \in \{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}$. The bijective map $\hatσ(...,y_2,y_1|x_1,x_2,...)= (...,y_2,y_1,x_1|x_2,...)$ is called the bilateral shift and acts on $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{Z}-\{0\}}$. Given $A: \{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}=Ω^+\to \mathbb{R}$ we express $A$ in the variable $x$, like $A(x)$. In a similar way, given $B: \{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}=Ω^{-}\to \mathbb{R}$ we express $B$ in the variable $y$, like $B(y)$. Finally, given $W: Ω^{-} \times Ω^{+}\to \mathbb{R}$, we express $W$ in the variable $(y|x)$, like $W(y|x)$. By abuse of notation we write $A(y|x)=A(x)$ and $B(y|x)=B(y).$ The probability $μ_A$ denotes the equilibrium probability for $A: \{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$. Given a continuous potential $A: Ω^+\to \mathbb{R}$, we say that the continuous potential $A^*: Ω^{-}\to \mathbb{R}$ is the dual potential of $A$, if there exists a continuous $W: Ω^{-} \times Ω^{+}\to \mathbb{R}$, such that, for all $(y|x) \in \{0,1\}^{\mathbb{Z}-\{0\}}$ $$ A^* (y) = \left[ A \circ \hatσ^{-1} + W \circ \hatσ^{-1} - W \right] (y|x). $$ We say that $W$ is an involution kernel for $A$. The function $W$ allows you to define an spectral projection in the linear space of the main eigenfunction of the Ruelle operator for $A$. Given $A$, we describe explicit expressions for $W$ and the dual potential $A^*$, for $A$ in a family of functions introduced by P. Walters. We present conditions for $A$ to be symmetric and to be of twist type.

Entropy, pressure, ground states and calibrated sub-actions for linear dynamics

Denote by $X$ a Banach space and by $T : X \to X$ a bounded linear operator with non-trivial kernel satisfying suitable conditions. We consider the concepts of entropy - for $T$-invariant probability measures - and pressure for Hölder continuous potentials. We also prove the existence of ground states (the limit when temperature goes to zero) associated with such class of potentials when the Banach space $X$ is equipped with a Schauder basis. We produce an example concerning weighted shift operators defined on the Banach spaces $c_0(\mathbb{R})$ and $l^p(\mathbb{R})$, $1 \leq p < +\infty$, where our results do apply. In addition, we prove the existence of calibrated sub-actions when the potential satisfies certain regularity conditions using properties of the so-called Mañé potential. We also exhibit examples of selection at zero temperature and explicit sub-actions in the class of Hölder continuous potentials.

Thermodynamic Formalism for Haar systems in Noncommutative Integration: transverse functions and entropy of transverse measures

We consider here a class of groupoids obtained via an equivalence relation (the subgroupoids of pair groupoids). We generalize to Haar Systems in these groupoids some results related to entropy and pressure which are well known in Thermodynamic Formalism. We introduce a transfer operator, where the equivalence relation (which defines the groupoid) plays the role of the dynamics and the corresponding transverse function plays the role of the {\it a priori} probability. We also introduce the concept of invariant transverse probability and of entropy for an invariant transverse probability, as well as of pressure for transverse functions. Moreover, we explore the relation between quasi-invariant probabilities and transverse measures. Our results are on measurable category.

On the thin boundary of the fat attractor

For, $0<λ<1$, consider the transformation $T(x) = d x $ (mod 1) on the circle $S^1$, a $C^1$ function $A:S^1 \to \mathbb{R}$, and, the map $F(x,s) = ( T(x) , λ\, s + A(x))$, $(x,s)\in S^1 \times \mathbb{R}$. We denote $\mathcal{B}= \mathcal{B}_λ$ the upper boundary of the attractor (known as fat attractor). We are interested in the regularity of $\mathcal{B}_λ$, and, also in what happens in the limit when $λ\to 1$. We also address the analysis of the following conjecture which were proposed by R. Bamón, J. Kiwi, J. Rivera-Letelier and R. Urzúa: for any fixed $λ$, $C^1$ generically on the potential $A$, the upper boundary $\mathcal{B}_λ$ is formed by a finite number of pieces of smooth unstable manifolds of periodic orbits for $F$. We show the proof of the conjecture for the class of $C^2$ potentials $A(x)$ satisfying the twist condition (plus a combinatorial condition). We do not need the generic hypothesis for this result. We present explicit examples. On the other hand, when $λ$ is close to $1$ and the potential $A$ is generic a more precise description can be done. In this case the finite number of pieces of $C^1$ curves on the boundary have some special properties. Having a finite number of pieces on this boundary is an important issue in a problem related to semi-classical limits and micro-support. This was consider in a recent published work by A. Lopes and J. Mohr. Finally, we present the general analysis of the case where $A$ is Lipschitz and its relation with Ergodic Transport

Phase Transitions in One-dimensional Translation Invariant Systems: a Ruelle Operator Approach

We consider a family of potentials f, derived from the Hofbauer potentials, on the symbolic space Omega=\{0,1\}^\mathbb{N} and the shift mapping $σ$ acting on it. A Ruelle operator framework is employed to show there is a phase transition when the temperature varies in the following senses: the pressure is not analytic, there are multiple eigenprobabilities for the dual of the Ruelle operator, the DLR-Gibbs measure is not unique and finally the Thermodynamic Limit is not unique. Additionally, we explicitly calculate the critical points for these phase transitions. Some examples which are not of Hofbauer type are also considered. The non-uniqueness of the Thermodynamic Limit is proved by considering a version of a Renewal Equation. We also show that the correlations decay polynomially and that each one of these Hofbauer potentials is a fixed point for a certain renormalization transformation.

Semiclassical limits, Lagrangian states and coboundary equations

Assume that $f$ is a continuous transformation $f:S^1 \to S^1$. We consider here the cases where $f$ is either the transformation $f(z)=z^2$ or $f$ is a smooth diffeomorphism of the circle $S^1$. Consider a fixed continuous potential $τ:S^1=[0,1) \to \mathbb{R}$, $ν\in \mathbb{R}$ and $φ:S^1 \to \mathbb{C}$ (a quantum state). The transformation $\hat F_ν$ acting on $φ:S^1 \to \mathbb{C}$, $\hat F_ν(φ) = ϕ$, defined by $\displaystyle ϕ(z) = \hat F_ν (φ(z)) = φ(f(z))e^{iντ(z)}$ describes a discrete time dynamical evolution of the quantum state $φ$. Given $S: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ we define the Lagrangian state $$φ_{x}^S(z) = \sum_{k\in\mathbb{Z}} e^{\frac{iS (z-k)}{\hbar}} e^{-\frac{(z-k-x)^2}{4\hbar}}.$$ In this case $\hat F_ν(φ_{x}^S(z)) = \sum_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}e^{\frac{iS (f(z)-k)}{\hbar}}e^{-\frac{(f(z)-k-x)^2}{4\hbar}}e^{iντ(z)}$. Under suitable conditions on $S$ the micro-support of $φ^S_x (z)$, when $\hbar \to 0$, is $(x,S'(x))$. One of meanings of the semiclassical limit in Quantum Mechanics is to take $ν=\frac{1}{\hbar}$ and $\hbar \to 0$. We address the question of finding $S$ such that $φ^S_x$ satisfies the property: $ \forall x$, we have that $\hat{F}_ν(φ^S_x)$ has micro-support on the graph of $y\to S'(y)$ (which is the micro-support of $φ^S_x$). In other words: which $S$ is such that $\hat{F}_ν$ leaves the micro-support of $φ^S_x$ invariant? This is related to a coboundary equation for $τ$, twist conditions and the boundary of the fat attractor.

Transport and large deviations for Schrodinger operators and Mather measures

In this mainly survey paper we consider the Lagrangian $ L(x,v) = \frac{1}{2} \, |v|^2 - V(x) $, and a closed form $w$ on the torus $ \mathbb{T}^n $. For the associated Hamiltonian we consider the the Schrodinger operator ${\bf H}_β=\, -\,\frac{1}{2 β^2} \, Δ+V$ where $β$ is large real parameter. Moreover, for the given form $β\, w$ we consider the associated twist operator ${\bf H}_β^w$. We denote by $({\bf H}_β^w)^*$ the corresponding backward operator. We are interested in the positive eigenfunction $ ψ_β$ associated to the the eigenvalue $ E_β$ for the operator ${\bf H}_β^{w} $. We denote $ ψ_β^*$ the positive eigenfunction associated to the the eigenvalue $ E_β$ for the operator $({\bf H}_β^{w})^* $. Finally, we analyze the asymptotic limit of the probability $ν_β= ψ_β\, ψ_β^*$ on the torus when $β\to \infty$. The limit probability is a Mather measure. We consider Large deviations properties and we derive a result on Transport Theory. We denote $L^{-}(x,v) = \frac{1}{2} \, |v|^2 - V(x) - w_x(v) $ and $L^{+}(x,v) = \frac{1}{2} \, |v|^2 - V(x) + w_x(v) $. We are interest in the transport problem from $μ_{-}$ (the Mather measure for $L^{-}$) to $μ_{+}$ (the Mather measure for $L^{+}$) for some natural cost function. In the case the maximizing probability is unique we use a Large Deviation Principle due to N. Anantharaman in order to show that the conjugated sub-solutions $u$ and $u^*$ define an admissible pair which is optimal for the dual Kantorovich problem.

A detailed proof of the von Neumann's Quantum Ergodic Theorem

We present a simplified proof of the von Neumann's Quantum Ergodic Theorem. This important result was initially published in german by J. von Neumann in 1929. We are interested here in the time evolution $ψ_t$, $t\geq 0$, (for large times) under the Schrodinger equation associated to a given fixed Hamiltonian $H : \mathcal{H} \to \mathcal{H}$ and a general initial condition $ψ_0$. The dimension of the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is finite.

Duality between Eigenfunctions and Eigendistributions of Ruelle and Koopman operators via an integral kernel

We consider the classical dynamics given by a one sided shift on the Bernoulli space of $d$ symbols. We study, on the space of Hölder functions, the eigendistributions of the Ruelle operator with a given potential. Our main theorem shows that for any isolated eigenvalue, the eigendistributions of such Ruelle operator are dual to eigenvectors of a Ruelle operator with a conjugate potential. We also show that the eigenfunctions and eigendistributions of the Koopman operator satisfy a similar relationship. To show such results we employ an integral kernel technique, where the kernel used is the involution kernel.

Generic properties for random repeated quantum iterations

We denote by $M^n$ the set of $n$ by $n$ complex matrices. Given a fixed density matrix $β:\mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}^n$ and a fixed unitary operator $U : \mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n$, the transformation $Φ: M^n \to M^n$ $$ Q \to Φ(Q) =\, \text{Tr}_2 (\,U \, ( Q \otimes β)\, U^*\,)$$ describes the interaction of $Q$ with the external source $β$. The result of this is $Φ(Q)$. If $Q$ is a density operator then $Φ(Q)$ is also a density operator. The main interest is to know what happen when we repeat several times the action of $Φ$ in an initial fixed density operator $Q_0$. This procedure is known as random repeated quantum iterations and is of course related to the existence of one or more fixed points for $Φ$. In \cite{NP}, among other things, the authors show that for a fixed $β$ there exists a set of full probability for the Haar measure such that the unitary operator $U$ satisfies the property that for the associated $Φ$ there is a unique fixed point $ Q_Φ$. Moreover, there exists convergence of the iterates $Φ^n (Q_0) \to Q_Φ$, when $n \to \infty$, for any given $Q_0$ We show here that there is an open and dense set of unitary operators $U: \mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n $ such that the associated $Φ$ has a unique fixed point. We will also consider a detailed analysis of the case when $n=2$. We will be able to show explicit results. We consider the $C^0$ topology on the coefficients of $U$. In this case we will exhibit the explicit expression on the coefficients of $U$ which assures the existence of a unique fixed point for $Φ$. Moreover, we present the explicit expression of the fixed point $Q_Φ$

On Bertelson-Gromov Dynamical Morse Entropy

In this mainly expository paper we present a detailed proof of several results contained in a paper by M. Bertelson and M. Gromov on Dynamical Morse Entropy. This is an introduction to the ideas presented in that work. Suppose $M$ is compact oriented connected $C^\infty$ manifold of finite dimension. Assume that $f_0 :M \to [0,1]$ is a surjective Morse function. For a given natural number $n$, consider the set $M^n$ and for $x=(x_0,x_1,...,x_{n-1}) \in M^n$, denote $ f_n (x) = \frac{1}{n} \, \sum_{j=0}^{n-1} f_0 (x_j).$ The Dynamical Morse Entropy describes for a fixed interval $I\subset [0,1]$ the asymptotic growth of the number of critical points of $f_n$ in $I$, when $n \to \infty$. The part related to the Betti number entropy does not requires the differentiable structure. One can describe generic properties of potentials defined in the $XY$ model of Statistical Mechanics with this machinery.

Large Deviations for stationary probabilities of a family of continuous time Markov chains via Aubry-Mather theory

We consider a family of continuous time symmetric random walks indexed by $k\in \mathbb{N}$, $\{X_k(t),\,t\geq 0\}$. For each $k\in \mathbb{N}$ the matching random walk take values in the finite set of states $Γ_k=\frac{1}{k}(\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z})$ which is a subset of the unitary circle. The stationary probability for such process converges to the uniform distribution on the circle, when $k\to \infty$. We disturb the system considering a fixed $C^2$ potential $V: \mathbb{S}^1 \to \mathbb{R}$ and we will denote by $V_k$ the restriction of $V$ to $Γ_k$. Then, we define a non-stochastic semigroup generated by the matrix $k\,\, L_k + k\,\, V_k$, where $k\,\, L_k $ is the infinifesimal generator of $\{X_k(t),\,t\geq 0\}$. From the continuous time Perron's Theorem one can normalized such semigroup, and, then we get another stochastic semigroup which generates a continuous time Markov Chain taking values on $Γ_k$. The stationary probability vector for such Markov Chain is denoted by $π_{k,V}$. We assume that the maximum of $V$ is attained in a unique point $x_0$ of $\mathbb{S}^1$, and from this will follow that $π_{k,V}\to δ_{x_0}$. Our main goal is to analyze the large deviation principle for the family $π_{k,V}$, when $k \to\infty$. The deviation function $I^V$, which is defined on $ \mathbb{S}^1$, will be obtained from a procedure based on fixed points of the Lax-Oleinik operator and Aubry-Mather theory.

The Dual Potential, the involution kernel and Transport in Ergodic Optimization

Consider the shift $σ$ acting on the Bernoulli space $Σ={1,2,...,n}^\mathbb{N}$. We denote $\hatΣ= {1,2,...,n}^\mathbb{Z}$. We analyze several properties of the maximizing probability $μ_{\infty,A}$ of a Holder potential $A: Σ\to \mathbb{R}$. Associated to $A(x)$, via the involution kernel, $W: \hatΣ \to \mathbb{R}$, it is known that can we get the dual potential $A^*(y)$, where $(x,y)\in \hatΣ$. Consider $μ_{\infty, A^*}$ a maximizing probability for $A^*$. We would like to consider the transport problem from $μ_{\infty,A}$ to $μ_{\infty,A^*}$. In this case, it is natural to consider the cost function $c(x,y) = I(x) - W(x,y) +γ$, where $I$ is the deviation function. The pair of functions for the Kantorovich Transport dual Problem are $(-V,-V^*$), where we denote the two calibrated sub-actions by $V$ and $V^*$, respectively, for $A$ and $A^*$ for $μ_{\infty,A}$. We analyze the graph property for the optimal plan $\hatμ$.

A Ruelle Operator for continuous time Markov Chains

We consider a generalization of the Ruelle theorem for the case of continuous time problems. We present a result which we believe is important for future use in problems in Mathematical Physics related to $C^*$-Algebras We consider a finite state set $S$ and a stationary continuous time Markov Chain $X_t$, $t\geq 0$, taking values on S. We denote by $Ω$ the set of paths $w$ taking values on S (the elements $w$ are locally constant with left and right limits and are also right continuous on $t$). We consider an infinitesimal generator $L$ and a stationary vector $p_0$. We denote by $P$ the associated probability on ($Ω, {\cal B}$). This is the a priori probability. All functions $f$ we consider bellow are in the set ${\cal L}^\infty (P)$. From the probability $P$ we define a Ruelle operator ${\cal L}^t, t\geq 0$, acting on functions $f:Ω\to \mathbb{R}$ of ${\cal L}^\infty (P)$. Given $V:Ω\to \mathbb{R}$, such that is constant in sets of the form $\{X_0=c\}$, we define a modified Ruelle operator $\tilde{\cal L}_V^t, t\geq 0$. We are able to show the existence of an eigenfunction $u$ and an eigen-probability $ν_V$ on $Ω$ associated to $\tilde{\cal L}^t_V, t\geq 0$. We also show the following property for the probability $ν_V$: for any integrable $g\in {\cal L}^\infty (P)$ and any real and positive $t$ $$ \int e^{-\int_0^t (V \circ Θ_s)(.) ds} [ (\tilde{\cal L}^t_V (g)) \circ θ_t ] d ν_V = \int g d ν_V$$ This equation generalize, for the continuous time Markov Chain, a similar one for discrete time systems (and which is quite important for understanding the KMS states of certain $C^*$-algebras).

A thermodynamic formalism for continuous time Markov chains with values on the Bernoulli Space: entropy, pressure and large deviations

Through this paper we analyze the ergodic properties of continuous time Markov chains with values on the one-dimensional spin lattice 1,...,d}^N (also known as the Bernoulli space). Initially, we consider as the infinitesimal generator the operator $L={\mc L}_A -I$, where \mc L_A is a discrete time Ruelle operator (transfer operator), and A:{1,...,d}^N \to R is a given fixed Lipschitz function. The associated continuous time stationary Markov chain will define the\emph{a priori}probability. Given a Lipschitz interaction V:\{1,...,d\}^{\bb N}\to \mathbb{R}, we are interested in Gibbs (equilibrium) state for such $V$. This will be another continuous time stationary Markov chain. In order to analyze this problem we will use a continuous time Ruelle operator (transfer operator) naturally associated to V. Among other things we will show that a continuous time Perron-Frobenius Theorem is true in the case V is a Lipschitz function. We also introduce an entropy, which is negative, and we consider a variational principle of pressure. Finally, we analyze large deviations properties for the empirical measure in the continuous time setting using results by Y. Kifer.

Entropy and Variational Principle for one-dimensional Lattice Systems with a general a-priori probability: positive and zero temperature

We generalize several results of the classical theory of Thermodynamic Formalism by considering a compact metric space $M$ as the state space. We analyze the shift acting on $M^\mathbb{N}$ and consider a general a-priori probability for defining the Transfer (Ruelle) operator. We study potentials $A$ which can depend on the infinite set of coordinates in $M^\mathbb{N}.$ We define entropy and by its very nature it is always a nonpositive number. The concepts of entropy and transfer operator are linked. If M is not a finite set there exist Gibbs states with arbitrary negative value of entropy. Invariant probabilities with support in a fixed point will have entropy equal to minus infinity. In the case $M=S^1$, and the a-priori measure is Lebesgue $dx$, the infinite product of $dx$ on $(S^1)^\mathbb{N}$ will have zero entropy. We analyze the Pressure problem for a Hölder potential $A$ and its relation with eigenfunctions and eigenprobabilities of the Ruelle operator. Among other things we analyze the case where temperature goes to zero and we show some selection results. Our general setting can be adapted in order to analyze the Thermodynamic Formalism for the Bernoulli space with countable infinite symbols. Moreover, the so called XY model also fits under our setting. In this last case M is the unitary circle $S^1$. We explore the differentiable structure of $(S^1)^\mathbb{N}$ by considering potentials which are of class $C^1$ and we show some properties of the corresponding main eigenfunctions.

Selection of measure and a Large Deviation Principle for the general XY model

We consider $(M,d)$ a connected and compact manifold and we denote by $X$ the Bernoulli space $M^{\mathbb{N}}$. The shift acting on $X$ is denoted by $σ$. We analyze the general XY model, as presented in a recent paper by A. T. Baraviera, L. M. Cioletti, A. O. Lopes, J. Mohr and R. R. Souza. Denote the Gibbs measure by $μ_{c}:=h_{c}ν_{c}$, where $h_{c}$ is the eigenfunction, and, $ν_{c}$ is the eigenmeasure of the Ruelle operator associated to $cf$. We are going to prove that any measure selected by $μ_{c}$, as $c\to +\infty$, is a maximizing measure for $f$. We also show, when the maximizing probability measure is unique, that it is true a Large Deviation Principle, with the deviation function $R_{+}^{\infty}=\sum_{j=0}^\infty R_{+} (σ^f)$, where $R_{+}:= β(f) + V\circσ- V - f$, and, $V$ is any calibrated subaction.

Duality Theorems in Ergodic Transport

We analyze several problems of Optimal Transport Theory in the setting of Ergodic Theory. In a certain class of problems we consider questions in Ergodic Transport which are generalizations of the ones in Ergodic Optimization. Another class of problems is the following: suppose $σ$ is the shift acting on Bernoulli space $X=\{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}$, and, consider a fixed continuous cost function $c:X \times X\to \mathbb{R}$. Denote by $Π$ the set of all Borel probabilities $π$ on $X\times X$, such that, both its $x$ and $y$ marginal are $σ$-invariant probabilities. We are interested in the optimal plan $π$ which minimizes $\int c d π$ among the probabilities on $Π$. We show, among other things, the analogous Kantorovich Duality Theorem. We also analyze uniqueness of the optimal plan under generic assumptions on $c$. We investigate the existence of a dual pair of Lipschitz functions which realizes the present dual Kantorovich problem under the assumption that the cost is Lipschitz continuous. For continuous costs $c$ the corresponding results in the Classical Transport Theory and in Ergodic Transport Theory can be, eventually, different. We also consider the problem of approximating the optimal plan $π$ by convex combinations of plans such that the support projects in periodic orbits.

Ergodic Transport Theory and Piecewise Analytic Subactions for Analytic Dynamics

We consider a piecewise analytic real expanding map $f: [0,1]\to [0,1]$ of degree $d$ which preserves orientation, and a real analytic positive potential $g: [0,1] \to \mathbb{R}$. We assume the map and the potential have a complex analytic extension to a neighborhood of the interval in the complex plane. We also assume $\log g$ is well defined for this extension. It is known in Complex Dynamics that under the above hypothesis, for the given potential $β\,\log g$, where $β$ is a real constant, there exists a real analytic eigenfunction $ϕ_β$ defined on $[0,1]$ (with a complex analytic extension) for the Ruelle operator of $β\,\log g$. Under some assumptions we show that $\frac{1}β\, \log ϕ_β$ converges and is a piecewise analytic calibrated subaction. Our theory can be applied when $\log g(x)=-\log f'(x)$. In that case we relate the involution kernel to the so called scaling function.

Piecewise Analytic Subactions for Analytic Dynamics

We consider a piecewise analytic expanding map f: [0,1]-> [0,1] of degree d which preserves orientation, and an analytic positive potential g: [0,1] -> R. We address the analysis of the following problem: for a given analytic potential beta log g, where beta is a real constant, it is well known that there exists a real analytic (with a complex analytic extension to a small complex neighborhood of [0,1]) eigenfunction phi_beta for the Ruelle operator. One can ask: what happen with the function phi_beta, when beta goes to infinity. The domain of analyticity can change with beta. The correct question should be: is 1/ beta log phi_beta analytic in the limit, when beta goes to infinity ? Under a uniqueness assumption, this limit, when beta goes to infinity, is in fact a calibrated subaction V (see bellow definition). We show here that under certain conditions and for a certain class of generic potentials this continuous function is piecewise analytic (but not analytic). In a few examples one can get that the subaction is analytic (we need at least to assume that the maximizing probability has support in a unique fixed point).

Wigner measures and the semi-classical limit to the Aubry-Mather measure

In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the semi-classical limit of Wigner measures defined on the tangent bundle of the one-dimensional torus. In particular we show the convergence of Wigner measures to the Mather measure on the tangent bundle, for energy levels above the minimum of the effective Hamiltonian. The Wigner measures $μ_h$ we consider are associated to $ψ_h,$ a distinguished critical solution of the Evans' quantum action given by $ψ_h=a_h\,e^{i\frac{u_h}h}$, with $a_h(x)=e^{\frac{v^*_h(x)-v_h(x)}{2h}}$, $u_h(x)=P\cdot x+\frac{v^*_h(x)+v_h(x)}{2},$ and $v_h,v^*_h$ satisfying the equations -\frac{h\, Δv_h}{2}+ 1/2 \, | P + D v_h \,|^2 + V &= \bar{H}_h(P), \frac{h\, Δv_h^*}{2}+ 1/2 \, | P + D v_h^* \,|^2 + V &= \bar{H}_h(P), where the constant $\bar{H}_h(P)$ is the $h$ effective potential and $x$ is on the torus. L.\ C.\ Evans considered limit measures $|ψ_h|^2$ in $\mathbb{T}^n$, when $h\to 0$, for any $n\geq 1$. We consider the limit measures on the phase space $\mathbb{T}^n\times\mathbb{R}^n$, for $n=1$, and, in addition, we obtain rigorous asymptotic expansions for the functions $v_h$, and $v^*_h$, when $h\to 0$.

A Thermodynamic Formalism for density matrices in Quantum Information

We consider new concepts of entropy and pressure for stationary systems acting on density matrices which generalize the usual ones in Ergodic Theory. Part of our work is to justify why the definitions and results we describe here are natural generalizations of the classical concepts of Thermodynamic Formalism (in the sense of R. Bowen, Y. Sinai and D. Ruelle). It is well-known that the concept of density operator should replace the concept of measure for the cases in which we consider a quantum formalism. We consider the operator $Λ$ acting on the space of density matrices $\mathcal{M}_N$ over a finite $N$-dimensional complex Hilbert space $$ Λ(ρ):=\sum_{i=1}^k tr(W_iρW_i^*)\frac{V_iρV_i^*}{tr(V_iρV_i^*)}, $$ where $W_i$ and $V_i$, $i=1,2,..., k$ are linear operators in this Hilbert space. In some sense this operator is a version of an Iterated Function System (IFS). Namely, the $V_i\,(.)\,V_i^*=:F_i(.)$, $i=1,2,...,k$, play the role of the inverse branches (i.e., the dynamics on the configuration space of density matrices) and the $W_i$ play the role of the weights one can consider on the IFS. In this way a family $W:=\{W_i\}_{i=1,..., k}$ determines a Quantum Iterated Function System (QIFS). We also present some estimates related to the Holevo bound.

Large deviations and Aubry-Mather measures supported in nonhyperbolic closed geodesics

We obtain a large deviation function for the stationary measures of twisted Brownian motions associated to the Lagrangians $L_λ(p,v)=\frac{1}{2}g_{p}(v,v)- λω_{p}(v)$, where $g$ is a $C^{\infty}$ Riemannian metric in a compact surface $(M,g)$ with nonpositive curvature, $ω$ is a closed 1-form such that the Aubry-Mather measure of the Lagrangian $L(p,v)=\frac{1}{2}g_{p}(v,v)-ω_{p}(v)$ has support in a unique closed geodesic $γ$; and the curvature is negative at every point of $M$ but at the points of $γ$ where it is zero. We also assume that the Aubry set is equal to the Mather set. The large deviation function is of polynomial type, the power of the polynomial function depends on the way the curvature goes to zero in a neighborhood of $γ$. This results has interesting counterparts in one-dimensional dynamics with indifferent fixed points and convex billiards with flat points in the boundary of the billiard. A previous estimate by N. Anantharaman of the large deviation function in terms of the Peierl's barrier of the Aubry-Mather measure is crucial for our result.

Quantum Stochastic Processes, Quantum Iterated Function Systems and Entropy

We describe some basic results for Quantum Stochastic Processes and present some new results about a certain class of processes which are associated to Quantum Iterated Function Systems (QIFS). We discuss questions related to the Markov property and we present a definition of entropy which is induced by a QIFS. This definition is a natural generalization of the Shannon-Kolmogorov entropy from Ergodic Theory. This definition is different from the one in the paper "A Thermodynamic Formalism for density matrices in Quantum Information" by the same authors.

Selection of measures for a potential with two maxima at the zero temperature limit

For the subshift of finite type $§=\{0,1,2\}^{\N}$ we study the convergence at temperature zero of the Gibbs measure associated to a non-locally constant Hölder potential which admits only two maximizing measures. These measures are Dirac measures at two different fixed points. The potential is flattest at one of these two fixed points. The question we are interested is: which of these probabilities the invariant Gibbs state will select when temperature goes to zero? We prove that on the one hand the Gibbs measure converges, and at the other hand it does not necessarily converge to the measures where the potential is the flattest. We consider a family of potentials of the above form; for some of them there is the selection of a convex combination of the two Dirac measures, and for others there is a selection of the Dirac measure associated to the flattest point. In the first case this is contrary to what was expected if we consider the analogous problem in Aubry-Mather theory by N. Anantharaman, R. Iturriaga, P. Padilla and H. Sanchez-Morgado. The invariant probability is obtained by the junction of the eigen-function and the eigen-probability. A curious phenomena that happens in our examples is that the eigen-measure and the eigen-function have opposite behavior. When $β\to \infty$, the eigen-measure became exponential bigger around $0^\infty$, when compared to points around $1^\infty$. For the eigen-function the opposite happens.

The effective potential and transshipment in thermodynamic formalism at temperature zero

Denote the points in {1,2,..,r}^{Z}= {1,2,..,r}^{N} x {1,2,..,r}^{N} by ({y}^*, {x}). Given a Lipschitz continuous observable A: {1,2,..,r}^{Z} \to {R} , we define the map {G}^+: {H}\to {H} by {G}^+(ϕ)({y}^*) = \sup_{μ\in {M}_σ} [\int_{\{1,2,..,r\}^{N}} ( A({y}^*, {x}) + ϕ({x})) dμ({x}) + h_μ(σ) ], where: σis the left shift map acting on {1,2,..,r}^{N}; {M}_σdenotes the set of σ-invariant Borel probabilities; h_μ(σ) indicates the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy; {H } is the Banach space of Lipschitz real-valued functions on {1,2,..,r}^{N}. We show there exist a unique ϕ^+ \in {H } and a unique λ^+\in {R} such that {G}^+ (ϕ^+) = ϕ^+ + λ^+. We say that ϕ^+ is the effective potential associated to A. This also defines a family of $σ$-invariant Borel probabilities μ_{{y}^*} on {1,2,..,r}^{N}, indexed by the points {y}^* \in {1,2,..,r}^{N}. Finally, for A fixed and for variable positive real values β, we consider the same problem for the Lipschitz observable βA. We investigate then the asymptotic limit when β\to \infty of the effective potential (which depends now on β) as well as the above family of probabilities. We relate the limit objects with an ergodic version of Kantorovich transshipment problem. In statistical mechanics β\propto 1/T, where T is the absolute temperature. In this way, we are also analyzing the problem related to the effective potential at temperature zero.

Zeta measures and Thermodynamic Formalism for temperature zero

We address the analysis of the following problem: given a real Hölder potential $f$ defined on the Bernoulli space and $μ_f$ its equilibrium state, it is known that this shift-invariant probability can be weakly approximated by probabilities in periodic orbits associated to certain zeta functions. Given a Hölder function $f>0$ and a value $s$ such that $0<s<1$, we can associate a shift-invariant probability $ν_{s}$ such that for each continuous function $k$ we have \[\int k dν_{s}=\frac{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\sum_{x\in Fix_{n}}e^{sf^{n}(x)-nP(f)}\frac{k^{n}(x)}{n}}{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\sum_{x\in Fix_{n}}e^{sf^{n}(x)-nP(f)}},\] where $P(f)$ is the pressure of $f$, $Fix_n$ is the set of solutions of $σ^n(x)=x$, for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$, and $f^{n}(x) = f(x) + f(σ(x)) + f(σ^2(x))+... + f(σ^{n-1} (x)).$ We call $ν_{s}$ a zeta probability for $f$ and $s$. It is known that $ν_s \to μ_{f}$, when $s \to 1$. We consider for each value $c$ the potential $c f$ and the corresponding equilibrium state $μ_{c f}$. What happens with $ν_{s}$ when $c$ goes to infinity and $s$ goes to one? This question is related to the problem of how to approximate the maximizing probability for $f$ by probabilities on periodic orbits. We study this question and also present here the deviation function $I$ and Large Deviation Principle for this limit $c\to \infty, s\to 1$. We will make an assumption: $\lim_{c\to \infty, s\to 1} c(1-s)= L>0$. We do not assume here the maximizing probability for $f$ is unique.
