A Rindler Road to Carrollian Worldsheets

The tensionless limit of string theory has recently been formulated in terms of worldsheet Rindler physics. In this paper, by considering closed strings moving in background Rindler spacetimes, we provide a concrete exemplification of this phenomenon. We first show that strings probing the near-horizon region of a generic non-extremal blackhole become tensionless thereby linking a spacetime Carroll limit to a worldsheet Carroll limit. Then, considering strings in $d$-dimensional Rindler spacetime we find a Rindler structure induced on the worldsheet. Novelties, including folds, appear on the closed string worldsheet pertaining to the formation of the worldsheet horizon. The closed string becomes segmented at these folding points and different segments go into the formation of closed strings in the different Rindler wedges. The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) or the Conformal Carroll algebra emerges from the closed string Virasoro algebra as the horizon is hit. Quantum states on these accelerated worldsheets are discussed and we show the formation of boundary states from gluing conditions of the different segments of the accelerated closed string.

From CFTs to theories with Bondi-Metzner-Sachs symmetries: Complexity and out-of-time-ordered correlators

We probe the contraction from $2d$ relativistic CFTs to theories with Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries, or equivalently Conformal Carroll symmetries, using diagnostics of quantum chaos. Starting from an Ultrarelativistic limit on a relativistic scalar field theory and following through at the quantum level using an oscillator representation of states, one can show the CFT$_2$ vacuum evolves smoothly into a BMS$_3$ vacuum in the form of a squeezed state. Computing circuit complexity of this transmutation using the covariance matrix approach shows clear divergences when the BMS point is hit or equivalently when the target state becomes a boundary state. We also find similar behaviour of the circuit complexity calculated from methods of information geometry. Furthermore, we discuss the hamiltonian evolution of the system and investigate Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) and operator growth complexity, both of which turn out to scale polynomially with time at the BMS point.

Observation of Griffiths-like phase in the quaternary Heusler compound NiFeTiSn

The quaternary Heusler compound NiFeTiSn can be considered to be derived from the exotic pseudogap-compound Fe2TiSn by the replacement of one Fe atom by Ni. In contrast to Fe2TiSn, which shows a disorder-induced ferromagnetic phase, the ground state of NiFeTiSn is antiferromagnetic with the signature of spin canting. Interestingly, NiFeTiSn shows a Griffiths-like phase characterized by isolated ferromagnetic clusters before attaining the antiferromagnetic state. The Griffiths-like phase is possibly associated with the antisite disorder between Fe and Ti sites as evident from our powder X-ray diffraction study. The compound also shows rather an unusual temperature dependence of resistivity, which can be accounted for by the prevailing structural disorder in the system. NiFeTiSn turned out to be a rare example where a Griffiths-like phase is observed in a semiconducting 3d transition metal-based intermetallic compound with an antiferromagnetic ground state.

zkHawk: Practical Private Smart Contracts from MPC-based Hawk

Cryptocurrencies have received a lot of research attention in recent years following the release of the first cryptocurrency Bitcoin. With the rise in cryptocurrency transactions, the need for smart contracts has also increased. Smart contracts, in a nutshell, are digitally executed contracts wherein some parties execute a common goal. The main problem with most of the current smart contracts is that there is no privacy for a party's input to the contract from either the blockchain or the other parties. Our research builds on the Hawk project that provides transaction privacy along with support for smart contracts. However, Hawk relies on a special trusted party known as a manager, which must be trusted not to leak each party's input to the smart contract. In this paper, we present a practical private smart contract protocol that replaces the manager with an MPC protocol such that the function to be executed by the MPC protocol is relatively lightweight, involving little overhead added to the smart contract function, and uses practical sigma protocols and homomorphic commitments to prove to the blockchain that the sum of the incoming balances to the smart contract matches the sum of the outgoing balances.

Rindler on the Worldsheet

We construct the tensionless limit of bosonic string theory in terms of a family of worldsheets with increasing acceleration and show that the null string emerges in the limit of infinite acceleration when the Rindler horizon is hit. We discover a novel phenomenon we call null string complementarity, which gives two distinct observer dependent pictures of the emergence of open string physics from closed strings in the tensionless limit. The closed string vacuum as observed by the inertial worldsheet turns into a D-instanton in the tensionless limit, while in the complementary picture from the accelerated worldsheet one sees the emergence of a D-25 brane. We finally discuss approaching the Rindler horizon through time evolution at constant acceleration and also show how an open string picture arises very naturally.

A Tale of Three. Tensionless strings and vacuum structure

Within the premise of canonical quantisation, we re-examine the quantum structure of bosonic tensionless string theory. In the classical theory, the worldsheet metric degenerates and the Bondi-Metnzer-Sachs (BMS) algebra arises as the residual symmetries on fixing the tensionless equivalent of the conformal gauge. In the quantum regime, we find, on careful examination, that there are multiple ways to impose constraints to restrict the physical Hilbert space, which in turn lead to three distinct choices of tensionless vacua. We analyse these vacua in detail, commenting on various aspects like the central charges and the spectrum around each of them.

Exotic Origins of Tensionless Superstrings

A new type of tensionless superstring theory, called the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring, has been recently introduced. This is characterised by a residual symmetry algebra on the worldsheet richer in structure than the previously known symmetry algebra related to Homogeneous tensionless superstring. In this paper, we investigate theories of tensile superstring that the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring with manifestly real fermions could arise from. We provide two different candidates for these parent tensile theories. The nature of the limit dictates that these theories have some exotic features.

Machine Learning for Health: Personalized Models for Forecasting of Alzheimer Disease Progression

In this thesis the aim is to work on optimizing the modern machine learning models for personalized forecasting of Alzheimer Disease (AD) Progression from clinical trial data. The data comes from the TADPOLE challenge, which is one of the largest publicly available datasets for AD research (ADNI dataset). The goal of the project is to develop machine learning models that can be used to perform personalized forecasts of the participants cognitive changes (e.g., ADAS-Cog13 scores) over the time period of 6,12, 18 and 24 months in the future and the change in Clinical Status (CS) i.e., whether a person will convert to AD within 2 years or not. This is important for informing current clinical trials and better design of future clinical trials for AD. We will work with personalized Gaussian processes as machine learning models to predict ADAS-Cog13 score and Cox model along with a classifier to predict the conversion in a patient within 2 years. This project is done with the collaboration with researchers from the MIT MediaLab.

SimPatch: A Nearest Neighbor Similarity Match between Image Patches

Measuring the similarity between patches in images is a fundamental building block in various tasks. Naturally, the patch-size has a major impact on the matching quality, and on the consequent application performance. We try to use large patches instead of relatively small patches so that each patch contains more information. We use different feature extraction mechanisms to extract the features of each individual image patches which forms a feature matrix and find out the nearest neighbor patches in the image. The nearest patches are calculated using two different nearest neighbor algorithms in this paper for a query patch for a given image and the results have been demonstrated in this paper.

D1 string dynamics in curved backgrounds with fluxes

We study various rotating and oscillating D-string configurations in some general backgrounds with fluxes. In particular, we look for solutions to the equations of motion of various rigidly rotating D-strings in $AdS_3$ background with mixed flux, and in the intersecting D-brane geometries. We find out relations among various conserved charges corresponding to the breathing and rotating D-string configurations.

Multi-spike strings in $AdS_3$ with mixed three-form fluxes

The string sigma model in $AdS_3\times S^3$ supported by mixed three-form fluxes has recently been proved to be integrable which led to a plethora of work in this background including proposals for S matrix and study of semiclassical string profiles. Motivated by this, in this paper, we present a study of `spiky' strings in this background. We analyze the string profiles in detail and also find the dispersion relation between the charges in the `long' string limit after solving the equations of motion perturbatively upto the leading order in the Neveu-Schwarz flux $b$. We find that the dispersion for 2 spikes gets corrected by the term $-\frac{b^2}{2}\log S$. We also discuss the fate of the solution in the limit of pure NS-NS flux.

On circular strings in $(AdS_3 \times S^3)_{\varkappa}$

The so called one-parameter (often called $\varkappa$) deformed $AdS$ string sigma models have attracted a lot of attention lately in the study of integrability in string theory. We construct various circular string solutions in the $(AdS_3 \times S^3)_{\varkappa}$ background and describe the characteristics of such solutions qualitatively. We study the Bohr-Sommerfeld like quantization for these string states to characterise the motion. Further we find a `long' string limit of such circular strings in the $\varkappa$-deformed $AdS_3$ and find a novel dependence of the oscillation number on the energy in the next to leading order expansion.

Tuning of thermoelectric properties with changing Se content in Sb2Te3

Polycrystalline Sb 2 Te 3-x Se x (0.0 < x < 1.0) samples were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The structural analysis showed that up to the maximal concentration of Se, the samples possess the Rhombohedral crystal symmetry (space group R 3 m ). Increase of Se content increases the resistivity of the samples. Variation of phonon frequencies, observed from Raman spectroscopic study, depict anomalous behaviour around x = 0.2. The sample Sb 2 Te 2.8 Se 0.2 also shows maximum Seebeck coefficient, carrier concentration and thermoelectric power factor. Nature of scattering mechanism controlling the thermopower data has been explored. The thermoelectric properties of the synthesized materials have been analyzed theoretically in the frame of Boltzmann equation approach.

A note on oscillating strings in $AdS_3 \times S^3$ with mixed three-form fluxes

We present a detailed study of the pulsating string solutions in AdS3 x S3 supported by both RR and NS-NS fluxes. This background has recently been proved to be integrable. We find the dispersion relation between the energy, oscillation number and other conserved charges when the NS-NS flux turned on is small. We further discuss the fate of the string solutions in pure RR and NS-NS cases.

Defect induced structural and thermoelectric properties of Sb2Te3 alloy

Structural and thermoelectric properties of metallic and semiconducting Sb2Te3 are reported. X-Ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that semiconducting sample have higher defect density. Nature and origin of possible defects are highlighted. Semiconducting Sb2Te3 hosts larger numbers of defects, which act as scattering center and give rise to the increased value of resistivity, thermopower and power factor. Thermopower data indicates p-type nature of the synthesized samples. It is evidenced that the surface states are often mixed with the bulk state, giving rise to metallicity in Sb2Te3. Role of different scattering mechanism on the thermoelectric property of Sb2Te3 is discussed.

The effect of quenching from different temperatures on Bi 0.88 Sb 0.12 alloy

Structural, thermal, resistive and magnetic properties of melt quenched Bi 0.88 Sb 0.12 alloys are reported. The samples are heated at three different temperatures, followed by rapid quenching in liquid nitrogen. Large temperature difference between liquidus and solidus lines, led to microscopic in-homogeneity in the alloy. The effect of quenching from different temperatures in polycrystalline Bi 0.88 Sb 0.12 alloy has been studied. The parameters such as strain, unit cell volume, and resistivity are found to increase with temperature. Thermal variation of resistivity depicts non monotonic temperature dependence. The total negative susceptibility increases and band gap of semiconducting Bi 0.88 Sb 0.12 samples decreases with increasing temperature.

Magnetoresistive property study of direct and indirect band gap thermoelectric Bi-Sb alloys

We report magnetoresistive properties of direct and indirect band gap Bismuth-Antimony (Bi-Sb) alloys. Band gap increases with magnetic field. Large positive magnetoresistance (MR) approaching to 400 % is observed. Low field MR experiences quadratic growth and at high field it follows a nearly linear behavior without sign of saturation. Carrier mobility extracted from low field MR data, depicts remarkable high value. Correlation between MR and mobility is revealed. We demonstrate that the strong nearly linear MR at high field can be well understood by classical method, co-build by Parish and Littlewood.

On the Rotating and Oscillating strings in $(AdS_3\times S^3)_{\varkappa}$

We study rigidly rotating strings in the $\varkappa$-deformed $AdS_3 \times S^3$ background. We find out two classes of solutions corresponding to the giant magnon and single spike solutions of the string rotating in two $S^2_{\varkappa}$ subspace of rotations reduced along two different isometries. We verify that the dispersion relations reduce to the well known relation in the $\varkappa\rightarrow 0$ limit. We further study some oscillating string solutions in the $S^3_{\varkappa}$ subspace.

Semiclassical Strings in Supergravity PFT

Puff Field Theory (PFT) is an example of a non-local field theory which arises from a novel embedding of D-branes in Melvin universe. We study several rotating and pulsating string solutions of the F-string equations of motion in the supergravity dual of the PFT. Further, we find a PP-wave geometry from this nonlocal spacetime by applying a Penrose limit and comment on its similarity with the maximally supersymmetric PP-wave background.

Spiky strings on AdS3 x S3 with NS-NS flux

We study rigidly rotating strings in the background of AdS3 x S3 with Neveu-Schwarz (NS) fluxes. We find two interesting limiting cases corresponding to the known giant magnon and the new single spike solution of strings in the above background and write down the dispersion relations among various conserved charges. We use proper regularization to find the correct relations among them. We further study the circular and infinite spiky strings on AdS and study their properties.

Correlation between defect and magnetism of Ar9+ implanted and un-implanted Zn0.95Mn0.05O thin films suitable for electronic application

Sol-gel derived thin films of Zn0.95Mn0.05O have been implanted with Ar9+ ions with doses viz. 5x10e14 ions/cm2 (low), 1x10e15 ions/cm2 (intermediate) and 1x10e16 ions/cm2 (high). Structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties of the films have been investigated. Structural study confirmed single phase, wurtzite structure of the films. The absence of impurity phase has been confirmed from several measurements. Ion implantation induces a large concentration of point defects into the films as identified from optical study. All films exhibit well above room temperature (RT) intrinsic ferromagnetism (FM) as evidenced from field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements. The magnetization attains the maximum value for high dose of Ar9+ ion implanted film. It shows RT saturation magnetization (MS) value of 0.69emu/gm. The observed FM has been correlated with proportion of intrinsic defects, such as, zinc and oxygen vacancies and the values of MS. Defect induced formation of bound magnetic polaron actually controls the FM. The utility of these films in transparent spin electronic device has also been exhibited.

Temperature-dependent structural property and power factor of n type thermoelectric Bi0.90Sb0.10 and Bi0.86Sb0.14 alloys

Thermal variation of structural property, linear thermal expansion coefficient, resistivity, thermopower and power factor of polycrystalline Bi1-xSbx (x=0.10, 0.14) samples are reported. Temperature-dependent powder diffraction experiments indicate that samples do not undergo any structural phase transition. Rietveld refinement technique has been used to perform detailed structural analysis. Temperature dependence of thermal expansion coefficient is found to be stronger for Bi0.90Sb0.10. Also, power factor for direct band gap Bi0.90Sb0.10 is higher as compared to that for indirect band gap Bi0.86Sb0.14. Role of electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering on resistivity, thermopower and power factor have been discussed.

Modification of structural and magnetic properties of Zn0.96 Mn0.04O samples by Li3+ ion irradiation

Zn0.96Mn0.04O samples were synthesized by solid state reaction technique to explore their magnetic behavior. Structural, morphological and magnetic properties of the samples have been found to be modified by 50 MeV Li+3 ion beam irradiation. The samples exhibit impurity phase and upon irradiation it disappears. Rietveld refinement analysis indicates that substitutional incorporation of Mn in the host lattice increases with irradiation. Grain size decreases with irradiation. Field dependent magnetization (M-H) measurement explicitly indicates ferromagnetic (FM) nature. It has been established from temperature dependent magnetization (M-T) measurement (500 Oe) and ac susceptibility (χ-T) measurement that ferromagnetism in the system seems to be mainly intrinsic; though superparamagnetic Mn nanoparticles also has a minor role. The analysis of M-T data at comparatively high field (5000-Oe) provides an estimation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange, which acts as a reducing agent for observed magnetic moment. The value of saturation magnetization has been increased upon irradiation and is highly correlated with dissolution of impurity phase. Actually structural property has been modified with ion irradiation and this modification may cause some definite positive change in magnetic property.

Sb concentration dependent structural and resistive properties of polycrystalline Bi-Sb alloys

Polycrystalline Bi-Sb alloys have been synthesized over a wide range of antimony concentration (8 at% to 20 at%) by solid state reaction method. In depth structural analysis using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature dependent resistivity measurement of synthesized samples have been performed. XRD data confirmed single phase nature of polycrystalline samples and revealed that complete solid solution is formed between bismuth and antimony. Rietveld refinement technique, utilizing MAUD software, has been used to perform detail structural analysis of the samples and lattice parameters of synthesized Bi-Sb alloys have been estimated. Lattice parameter and unit cell volume decreases monotonically with increasing antimony content. The variation of lattice parameters with antimony concentration depicts a distinct slope change beyond 12 at% Sb content sample. Band gap has been estimated from the thermal variation of resistivity data, with the 12% Sb content sample showing maximum value. It has been observed that, with increasing antimony concentration the transition from direct to indirect gap semiconductor is intimately related to the variation of the estimated lattice parameters. Band diagram for the polycrystalline Bi-Sb alloy system has also been proposed.

Structural, Morphological, Optical and Magnetic Property of Mn doped Ferromagnetic ZnO thin film

The structural, optical and magnetic properties of the Zn1-xMnxO (0 < x < 0.05) thin films synthesized by sol-gel technique have been analyzed in the light of modification of the electronic structure and disorder developed in the samples due to Mn doping. The films are of single phase in nature and no formation of any secondary phase has been detected from structural analysis. Absence of magnetic impurity phase in these films confirmed from morphological study also. Increasing tendency of lattice parameters and unit cell volume has been observed with increasing Mn doping concentration. The incorporation of Mn2+ ions introduces disorder in the system. That also leads to slight degradation in crystalline quality of the films with increasing doping. The grain size reduces with increase in Mn doping proportion. The band gaps shows red shift with doping and the width of localized states shows an increasing tendency with doping concentration. It is due to the formation of impurity band and trapping of Mn atoms, which leads to the generation of the defect states within the forbidden band. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra shows gradual decrease of intensity of exitonic and defect related peaks with increasing Mn doping. Defect mediated intrinsic ferromagnetism has been observed even at room temperaturenfor 5at% Mn doped ZnO film. The strong presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction reduces the observed ferromagnetic moments.

Effect of 50 MeV Li3+ irradiation on structural and electrical properties of Mn doped ZnO

The present work aims to study the effect of ion irradiation on structural and electrical properties and their correlation with the defects in Zn1-xMnxO type system. Zn1-xMnxO (x = 0.02, 0.04) samples have been synthesized by solid-state reaction method and have been irradiated with 50 MeV Li3+ ions. The concomitant changes have been probed by x-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature dependent electrical resistivity and positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy. XRD result shows single phase wurtzite structure for Zn0.98Mn0.02O, whereas for Zn0.96Mn0.04O sample an impurity phase has been found apart from the usual peaks of ZnO. Ion irradiation dissolves this impurity peak. Grain size of the samples found to be uniform. For Zn0.98Mn0.02O, the observed sharp decrease in room temperature resistivity (RhoRT) with irradiation is consistent with the lowering of FWHM of the XRD peaks. However for Zn0.96Mn0.04O, RhoRT decreases for initial fluence but increases for further increase of fluence. All the irradiated Zn0.98Mn0.02O samples show metal-semiconductor transition in temperature dependent resistivity measurement at low temperature. But all the irradiated Zn0.96Mn0.04O samples show semiconducting nature in the whole range of temperature. Results of room temperature resistivity, XRD and PAL measurements are consistent with each other.

Defects induced ferromagnetism in Mn doped ZnO

Single phase Mn doped (2 at %) ZnO samples have been synthesized by solid-state reaction technique. Before the final sintering at 500 C, the mixed powders have been milled for different milling periods (6, 24, 48 and 96 hours). The grain sizes of the samples are very close to each other (~ 32 \pm 4 nm). However, the defective state of the samples is different from each other as manifested from the variation of magnetic properties and electrical resistivity with milling time. All the samples have been found to be ferromagnetic with clear hysteresis loops at room temperature. The maximum value for saturation magnetization (0.11 μ_B / Mn atom) was achieved for 96 hours milled sample. Electrical resistivity has been found to increase with increasing milling time. The most resistive sample bears the largest saturation magnetization. Variation of average positron lifetime with milling time bears a close similarity with that of the saturation magnetization. This indicates the key role played by open volume vacancy defects, presumably zinc vacancies near grain surfaces, in inducing ferromagnetic order in Mn doped ZnO. To attain optimum defect configuration favorable for ferromagnetism in this kind of samples proper choice of milling period and annealing conditions is required.

Nernst quantum oscillations in bulk semi-metals

With a widely available magnetic field of 10 T, one can attain the quantum limit in bismuth and graphite. At zero magnetic field, these two elemental semi-metals host a dilute liquid of carriers of both signs. When the quantum limit is attained, all quasi-particles are confined to a few Landau tubes. Each time a Landau tube is squeezed before definitely leaving the Fermi surface, the Nernst response sharply peaks. In bismuth, additional Nernst peaks, unexpected in the non-interacting picture, are resolved beyond the quantum limit. The amplitude of these unexpected Nernst peaks is larger in the samples with the longest electron mean-free-path.

Synthesis and characterization of single phase Mn doped ZnO

Different samples of Zn1-xMnxO series have been prepared by conventional solid state sintering method. It has been identified, up to what extent of doping enable us to synthesize single-phase polycrystalline Mn doped ZnO samples which is one of the prerequisite for dilute magnetic semiconductor and we have analyzed its certain other physical aspects. In synthesizing the samples proportion of Mn varies from 1 at% to 5 at%. However the milling times have been varied (6, 12, 24, 48 & 96 hours) for only 2 at% Mn doped samples while for other samples (1, 3, 4 & 5 at% Mn doped) the milling time has been kept fixed at 96 hours. Room temperature X-Ray diffraction (XRD) data reveal that all of the prepared samples up to 3 at% of Mn doping exhibit wurtzite-type structure, no segregation of Mn and/or its oxides has been found. The 4 at% Mn doped samples show a weak peak of ZnMn2O4 apart from usual other peaks of ZnO and the intensity of this impurity peak has been further increased for 5 at% of Mn doping. So beyond 3 at% doping single-phase behavior is destroyed. Band gap for all the 2 at% Mn doped samples have been estimated as between 3.21 to 3.19 eV and reason for this low band gap values has been explained through the grain boundary trapping model. The room temperature resistivity measurement shows increase of resistivity up to 48 hours of milling and with further milling it saturates. The defect state of these samples has been investigated by using positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy technique. Here all the relevant lifetime parameters of positron i.e. free annihilation (tau 1), at defect site (tau 2) and average (tau av) increases with milling time.

Extension of Max-Min Ant System with Exponential Pheromone Deposition Rule

The paper presents an exponential pheromone deposition approach to improve the performance of classical Ant System algorithm which employs uniform deposition rule. A simplified analysis using differential equations is carried out to study the stability of basic ant system dynamics with both exponential and constant deposition rules. A roadmap of connected cities, where the shortest path between two specified cities are to be found out, is taken as a platform to compare Max-Min Ant System model (an improved and popular model of Ant System algorithm) with exponential and constant deposition rules. Extensive simulations are performed to find the best parameter settings for non-uniform deposition approach and experiments with these parameter settings revealed that the above approach outstripped the traditional one by a large extent in terms of both solution quality and convergence time.
