Inflation and long-range force from clockwork $D$-term

Cosmic inflation driven by the vacuum energy associated with the $D$-term of a supersymmetric abelian gauge group and a possible existence of long-range force mediated by an ultra-light gauge boson $Z^\prime$ are two extreme examples of models based on extra $U(1)$ symmetries. Large vacuum energy sets the scale of inflation while the scales of long-range forces induced by anomaly free extra gauged $U(1)$ symmetries are constrained by neutrino oscillations, binary pulsar timings and invisible neutrino decay. There exists a difference of about 40 orders of magnitude between the scales of these two. Also, gauge couplings associated with the long-range forces are very small compared to the standard model couplings and the one required for inflation. We propose a framework based on clockwork mechanism in which these vastly different scales and associated new physics can coexist without invoking any arbitrarily small or large parameter in the fundamental theory. A chain of $U(1)$ is introduced with characteristic nearest-neighbour interactions. A large $D$-term introduced at one end governs the dynamics of inflation. $Z^\prime$ is localized on the other end of the chain, and it can be massless or can get naturally suppressed mass. The standard model fields can be charged under one of the intermediate $U(1)$ in the chain to give rise to their small effective coupling $g^\prime$ with $Z^\prime$. Constraints on $g^\prime$ and $M_{Z^\prime}$ are discussed in the context of the long-range forces of type $L_μ- L_τ$, $L_e - L_μ$ and $B-L$. These, along with the inflation observables, are used to constraint the parameters of the underlying clockwork model.

Generalised $μ$-$τ$ symmetries and calculable gauge kinetic and mass mixing in $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ models

Extensions of the standard model with a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry contain gauge invariant kinetic mixing, $\sinχ$, and gauge non-invariant mass mixing, $δM^2$, between the hypercharge and the new gauge boson $Z'$. These represent a priori incalculable but phenomenologically important parameters of the theory. They become calculable if there exist spontaneously or softly broken symmetries which forbid them at tree level but allow their generation at the loop level. We discuss various symmetries falling in this category in the context of the gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ models and their interplay with lepton mixing. It is shown that one gets phenomenologically inconsistent lepton mixing parameters if these symmetries are exact. Spontaneous breaking of these symmetries can lead to consistent lepton mixing and also generates finite and calculable values of these parameters at one or two loop order depending on the underlying symmetry. We calculate these parameters in two specific cases: (i) the standard seesaw model with $μ$-$τ$ symmetry broken by the masses of the right-handed neutrinos and (ii) in a model containing a pair of vectorlike charged leptons which break $μ$-$τ$ symmetry. In case (i), the right-handed neutrinos are the only source of gauge mixing. The kinetic mixing parameters are suppressed and vanish if the right-handed neutrinos decouple from the theory. In contrast, there exists a finite gauge mixing in case (ii) which survives even when the masses of vectorlike leptons are taken to infinity, exhibiting non-decoupling behaviour. The seesaw model discussed here represents a complete framework with practically no kinetic mixing and hence can survive a large number of experimental probes used to rule out specific ranges in the coupling $g^\prime$ and mass $M_{Z^\prime}$. The model can generate non-universality in tau decays, which can be tested in future experiments.

Generalized $μ$-$τ$ symmetry and discrete subgroups of O(3)

The generalized $μ$-$τ$ interchange symmetry in the leptonic mixing matrix $U$ corresponds to the relations: $|U_{μi}|=|U_{τi}|$ with $i=1,2,3$. It predicts maximal atmospheric mixing and maximal Dirac CP violation given $θ_{13} \neq 0$. We show that the generalized $μ$-$τ$ symmetry can arise if the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices are invariant under specific residual symmetries contained in the finite discrete subgroups of $O(3)$. The groups $A_4$, $S_4$ and $A_5$ are the only such groups which can entirely fix $U$ at the leading order. The neutrinos can be (a) non-degenerate or (b) partially degenerate depending on the choice of their residual symmetries. One obtains either vanishing or very large $θ_{13}$ in case of (a) while only $A_5$ can provide $θ_{13}$ close to its experimental value in the case (b). We provide an explicit model based on $A_5$ and discuss a class of perturbations which can generate fully realistic neutrino masses and mixing maintaining the generalized $μ$-$τ$ symmetry in $U$. Our approach provides generalization of some of the ideas proposed earlier in order to obtain the predictions, $θ_{23}=π/4$ and $δ_{\rm CP} = \pm π/2$.

Neutrino masses and mixing from flavour antisymmetry

We discuss consequences of assuming ($i$) that the (Majorana) neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ displays flavour antisymmetry, $S_ν^T M_νS_ν=-M_ν$ with respect to some discrete symmetry $S_ν$ contained in $SU(3)$ and ($ii$) $S_ν$ together with a symmetry $T_l$ of the Hermitian combination $M_lM_l^\dagger$ of the charged lepton mass matrix forms a finite discrete subgroup $G_f$ of $SU(3)$ whose breaking generates these symmetries. Assumption ($i$) leads to at least one massless neutrino and allows only four textures for the neutrino mass matrix in a basis with a diagonal $S_ν$ if it is assumed that the other two neutrinos are massive. Two of these textures contain a degenerate pair of neutrinos.Assumption ($ii$) can be used to determine the neutrino mixing patterns. We work out these patterns for two major group series $Δ(3 N^2)$ and $Δ(6 N^2)$ as $G_f$. It is found that all $Δ(6 N^2)$ and $Δ(3 N^2)$ groups with even $N$ contain some elements which can provide appropriate $S_ν$. Mixing patterns can be determined analytically for these groups and it is found that only one of the four allowed neutrino mass textures is consistent with the observed values of the mixing angles $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$. This texture corresponds to one massless and a degenerate pair of neutrinos which can provide the solar pair in the presence of some perturbations. The well-known groups $A_4$ and $S_4$ provide examples of the groups in respective series allowing correct $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$. An explicit example based on $A_4$ and displaying a massless and two quasi degenerate neutrinos is discussed.

A massless neutrino and lepton mixing patterns from finite discrete subgroups of U(3)

Finite discrete subgroups of $U(3)$ as possible flavour symmetries $G_f$ for a massless neutrinos with predictive mixing angles are studied. This is done by assuming that a residual symmetry $S_ν$ appropriate for describing a massless neutrino is contained in $G_f$. It is shown that all the groups $G_f$ admitting three dimensional faithful irreducible representation and generated from a specific set of $3\times 3$ matrices imply only one of the three flavour compositions for the massless state namely, unmixed, maximally mixed with equal probabilities and bimaximally mixed with probabilities (0,1/2,1/2) and their permutations. This result holds irrespective of the order of $G_f$ and the choice of $S_ν$ within it. All of these lead to unfavourable leading order prediction for the solar mixing angle. Neutrino mixing pattern is then numerically investigated in case of subgroups of $U(3)$ with order less than 512 and it is found that only one of these can lead to a massless neutrino and leading order predictions for all the mixing angles close to their experimental values. Ways to correct for the solar angle prediction are proposed and two concrete examples giving the observed mixing pattern are discussed.

Discrete flavour symmetries for degenerate solar neutrino pair and their predictions

Flavour symmetries appropriate for describing a neutrino spectrum with degenerate solar pair and a third massive or massless neutrino are discussed. We demand that the required residual symmetries of the leptonic mass matrices be subgroups of some discrete symmetry group $G_f$. $G_f$ can be a subgroup of SU(3) if the third neutrino is massive and we derive general results on the mixing angle predictions for various discrete subgroups of SU(3). The main results are: (a) All the SU(3) subgroups of type C fail in simultaneously giving correct $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$. (b) All the groups of type D can predict a relation $\cos^2θ_{13} \sin^2θ_{23}=\frac{1}{3}$ among the mixing angles which appears to be a good zeroth order approximation. Among these, various $Δ(6n^2)$ groups with $n\geq 8$ can simultaneously lead also to $\sin^2 θ_{13}$ in agreement with global fit at 3$σ$. (c) The group $Σ(168)\cong PSL(2,7)$ predicts near to the best fit value for $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ within the 1$σ$ range. All discrete subgroups of U(3) with order $<512$ and having three dimensional irreducible representation are considered as possible $G_f$ when the third neutrino is massless. Only seven of them are shown to be viable and three of these can correctly predict $θ_{13}$ and/or $θ_{23}$. The solar angle remains undetermined at the leading order in all the cases due to degeneracy in the masses. A class of general perturbations which can correctly reproduce all the observables are discussed in the context of several groups which offer good leading order predictions.

Horizontal symmetries of leptons with a massless neutrino

Residual symmetry $G_ν$ of neutrino mass matrix with a massless neutrino and embedding of $G_ν$ and the residual symmetry $G_l$ of the charged lepton mass matrix into finite discrete groups $G$ is discussed. Massless neutrino results if $G_ν$ and hence $G$ are subgroups of $U(3)$ rather than of $SU(3)$. Structure of the resulting leptonic mixing matrix $U_{PMNS}$ is discussed in three specific examples based on groups (a) $Σ(3N^3)$, (b) $Σ(2N^2)$ and (c) $S_4(2) \equiv A_4\rtimes Z_4$. $Σ(3N^3)$ groups are able to reproduce either the second or the third column of $U_{PMNS}$ correctly. $Σ(2N^2)$ groups lead to prediction $θ_{13}=0$, $θ_{23}=\fracπ{4}$ for the reactor and atmospheric mixing angles respectively if neutrino mass hierarchy is inverted. Solar angle remains undetermined in this case. This also gets determined when $G=S_4(2)$ which can give bi-maximal mixing for inverted hierarchy. Examples (b) and (c) provide a good zeroth order approximation to realistic leptonic mixing with a massless neutrino. We also present an example of the specific model based on $S_4(2)$ symmetry in which a massless neutrino and viable leptonic mixing angles are obtained.

How good is μ-τsymmetry after results on non-zero θ_{13}?

Viability of the μ-τinterchange symmetry imposed as an approximate symmetry (1) on the neutrino mass matrix {\cal M}_{νf} in the flavour basis (2) simultaneously on the charged lepton mass matrix M_l and the neutrino mass matrix M_νand (3) on the underlying Lagrangian is discussed in the light of recent observation of a non-zero reactor mixing angle θ_{13}. In case (1), μ-τsymmetry breaking may be regarded as small (less than 20-30%) only for the inverted or quasidegenerate neutrino mass spectrum and the normal hierarchy would violate it by a large amount. The case (2) is more restrictive and the requirement of relatively small breaking allows only the quasidegenerate spectrum. If neutrinos obtain their masses from the type-I seesaw mechanism then small breaking of the μ-τsymmetry in the underlying Lagrangian may result in a large breaking in {\cal M}_{νf} and even the hierarchical neutrino spectrum may also be consistent with mildly broken μ-τsymmetry of the Lagrangian. Neutrinoless double beta decay provides a good means of distinguishing above scenarios. In particular, non-observation of signal in future experiments such as GERDA would rule out scenarios (1) and (2).

Pseudo-Dirac neutrinos via mirror-world and depletion of UHE neutrinos

We propose a possible particle physics explanation of the non-observation of muon neutrino events at IceCube coincident with GRB gamma ray at the rates predicted by the standard Bahcall-Waxman model, in terms of neutrino oscillations. Our model is based on assuming that (a) all neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac particles and (b) there exists a mirror world interacting gravitationally with the observed world. This scenario has three sterile neutrinos associated with each flavour of ordinary neutrinos. Very tiny mass splitting between these neutrinos is assumed to arise from lepton number violating dimension five operators suppressed by the Planck scale. We show that if a mass splitting of 10^(-15) eV^2 is induced between the four mass eigenstates of a given species, then its flux will be suppressed at IceCube energies by a factor of 4 which could be the explanation of the IceCube observation that the muon neutrino flux is lower than expected. Hierarchies in mass splitting among different flavours may result in different amount of suppression of each flavour and based on this, we predict a difference in the flavour ratios of the observed neutrinos which is significantly different compared to the standard prediction of nu_e:nu_mu:nu_tau=1:1:1 which could serve as a test for this model.

Minimal extension of tri-bimaximal mixing and generalized Z_2 X Z_2 symmetries

We discuss consequences of combining the effective $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry of the tri-bimaximal neutrino mass matrix with the CP symmetry. Imposition of such generalized $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetries leads to predictive neutrino mass matrices determined in terms of only four parameters and leads to non-zero $θ_{13}$ and maximal atmospheric mixing angle and CP violating phase. It is shown that an effective generalized $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry of the mass matrix can arise from the $A_4$ symmetry with specific vacuum alignment. The neutrino mass matrix in the considered model has only three real parameters and leads to determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale as a function of the reactor angle $θ_{13}$.

Yukawa coupling unification in SO(10) with positive μ and a heavier gluino

The t-b-tau unification with positive Higgs mass parameter μ in the minimal supersymmetric standard model prefers "just so" Higgs splitting and a light gluino < 500 GeV which appears to be ruled out by the recent LHC searches. We reanalyze constraints on soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in this scenario allowing independent splittings among squarks and Higgs doublets at the grand unification scale and show that it is possible to obtain t-b-tau unification and satisfy experimental constraints on gluino mass without raising supersymmetry breaking scale to very high value ~ 20 TeV. We discuss the origin of independent squark and Higgs splittings in realistic SO(10) models. Just so Higgs splitting can be induced without significantly affecting the t-b-tau unification in SO(10) models containing Higgs fields transforming as 10+\bar{126}+126+210. This splitting arises in the presence of non-universal boundary conditions from mixing between 10 and other Higgs fields. Similarly, if additional matter fields are introduced then their mixing with the matter multiplet 16 is shown to generate the squark splitting required to raise the gluino mass within the t-b-tau unified models with positive μ.

Fermion Masses in SO(10) Models

We examine many SO(10) models for their viability or otherwise in explaining all the fermion masses and mixing angles. This study is carried out for both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models and with minimal ($10+\bar{126}$) and non-minimal ($10+\bar{126}+120$) Higgs content. Extensive numerical fits to fermion masses and mixing are carried out in each case assuming dominance of type-II or type-I seesaw mechanism. Required scale of the B-L breaking is identified in each case. In supersymmetric case, several sets of data at the GUT scale with or without inclusion of finite supersymmetric corrections are used. All models studied provide quite good fits if the type-I seesaw mechanism dominates while many fail if the type-II seesaw dominates. This can be traced to the absence of the $b$-$τ$ unification at the GUT scale in these models. The minimal non-supersymmetric model with type-I seesaw dominance gives excellent fits. In the presence of a $45_H$ and an intermediate scale, the model can also account for the gauge coupling unification making it potentially interesting model for the complete unification. Structure of the Yukawa coupling matrices obtained numerically in this specific case is shown to follow from a very simple U(1) symmetry and a Froggatt-Nielsen singlet.

Viability of the exact tri-bimaximal mixing at M_{GUT} in SO(10)

General structures of the charged lepton and the neutrino mixing matrices leading to tri-bimaximal leptonic mixing are determined. These are then integrated into an SO(10) model within which detailed fits to fermion masses and mixing angles are given. It is shown that one can obtain excellent fits to all the fermion masses and quark mixing angles keeping tri-bimaximal leptonic mixing intact. Different perturbations to the basic structure are considered and those which can or which cannot account for the recent T2K and MINOS results on the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}^l$ are identified.

Fermion number conservation and two Higgs doublet models without tree level flavour changing neutral currents

The charged fermion mass matrices are always invariant under $U(1)^3$ symmetry linked to the fermion number transformation. A class of two Higgs doublet models (2HDM) can be identified by requiring that the definition of this symmetry in an arbitrary weak basis be independent of Higgs parameters such as the ratio of the Higgs vacuum expectation values. The tree level flavour changing neutral currents normally present in 2HDM are absent in this class of models but unlike the type I or type II Higgs doublet models, the charged Higgs couplings in these models contain additional flavour dependent CP violating phases. These phases can account for the recent hints of the beyond standard model CP violation in the $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixing. In particular, there is a range of parameters in which new phases do not contribute to the $K$ meson CP violation but give identical new physics contribution to the $B_d$ and $B_s$ meson mixing. Specific model realizations of the above scenario are briefly discussed.

Implications of CP violating 2HDM in B physics

The charged fermion mass matrices are invariant under $U(1)^3$ symmetry linked to the fermion number transformation. Under the condition that the definition of this symmetry in arbitrary weak basis does not depend upon Higgs parameters such as ratio of vacuum expectation values, a class of two Higgs doublet models (2HDM) can be identified in which tree level flavor changing neutral currents normally present in 2HDM are absent. However unlike the type I or type II Higgs doublet models, the charged Higgs couplings in these models contain additional flavor dependent CP violating phases. These phases can account for the recent hints of the beyond standard model CP violation in the $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixing. In particular, there is a range of parameters in which new phases do not contribute to the $K$ meson CP violation but give identical new physics phases in the $B_d$ and $B_s$ meson mixing.

Quasi-degenerate neutrinos in SO(10)

Quark lepton universality inherent in grand unified theories based on $SO(10)$ gauge group generically leads to hierarchical neutrino masses. We propose a specific ansatz for the structure of Yukawa matrices in $SO(10)$ models which differ from this generic expectations and lead to quasi degenerate neutrinos through the type-I seesaw mechanism. Consistency of this ansatz is demonstrated through a detailed fits to fermion masses and mixing angles all of which can be explained with reasonable accuracy in a model which uses the Higgs fields transforming as $10,120$ and $\overline{126}$ representations of $SO(10)$. The proposed ansatz is shown to follow from an extended model based on the three generations of the vector like fermions and an $O(3)$ flavour symmetry. Successful numerical fits are also discussed in earlier proposed models which used combination of the type-I and type-II seesaw mechanisms for obtaining quasi degenerate neutrinos. Large neutrino mixing angles emerge as a consequence of neutrino mass degeneracy in both these cases.

Fermion Masses and Mixings in a $μ$-$τ$ symmetric SO(10)

$μ$-$τ$ symmetry imposed on the neutrino mass matrix in the flavour basis is known to be quite predictive. We integrate this very specific neutrino symmetry into a more general framework based on the supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theory. As in several other models, the fermion mass spectrum is determined by Hermitian mass matrices resulting from the renormalizable Yukawa couplings of the 16-plet of fermions with the Higgs fields transforming as $10, \bar{126},120$ representations of the SO(10) group. The $μ$-$τ$ symmetry is spontaneously broken through the 120-plet. Consequences of this scheme are considered for fermion masses using both type-I and type-II seesaw mechanism. This scenario is shown to lead to a generalized CP invariance of the mass matrices and vanishing CP violating phases if the Yukawa couplings are invariant under the $μ$-$τ$ symmetry. Small explicit breaking of the $μ$-$τ$ symmetry is then shown to provide a very good understanding of all the fermion masses and mixing. Detailed fits to the fermion spectrum are presented in several scenarios. One obtains a very good fit to all observables in the context of the type-I seesaw mechanism but type-II seesaw model also provides a good description except for the overall scale of the neutrino masses. Three major predictions on the leptonic mixing parameters in the type-I seesaw case are (1) the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}^{l}$ close to maximal, (2) $θ_{13}^{l}$ close to the present upper bound and (3) negative but very small Dirac CP violating phase in the neutrino oscillations.

Higgs induced FCNC as a source of new physics in $b\to s $ transitions

The observations in the $B_{s}$ sector suggest the existence of some new physics contribution to the $B_S-\bar{B}_s$ mixing. We study the implications of a hypothesis that this contribution is generated by the Higgs induced flavour changing neutral currents. We concentrate on the specific $b\to s$ transition which is described by two complex FCNC parameters $F_{23}$ and $F_{32}$ and parameters in the Higgs sector. Model independent constraints on these parameters are derived from the $B_S-\bar{B}_s$ mixing and are used to predict the branching ratios for $\bar{B}_s\to μ^+μ^-$ and $\bar{B}_d\to \bar{K}μ^+μ^-$ numerically by considering general variations in the Higgs parameters assuming that Higgs sector conserves CP. Taking the results on $B_{s}^0-\bar{B}_{s}^0$ mixing derived by the global analysis of UTfit group as a guide we present the general constraints on $F_{23}^*F_{32}$ in terms of the pseudo-scalar mass $M_A$. The former is required to be in the range $\sim (1-5) \times 10^{-11} M_A^2 {\rm GeV}^{-2}$ if the Higgs induced FCNC represent the dominant source of new physics. The phases of these couplings can account for the large CP violating phase in the $B_{s}^0-\bar{B}_{s}^0$ mixing except when $F_{23}=F_{32}$. The Higgs contribution to $\bar{B}_s\to μ^+μ^-$ branching ratio can be large, close to the present limit while it remains close to the standard model value in case of the process $\bar{B}_d\to \bar{K}μ^+μ^-$ for all the models under study. We identify and discuss various specific examples which can naturally lead to suppressed FCNC in the $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ mixing allowing at the same time the required values for $F_{23}^*$ and $F_{32}$.

Type I seesaw mechanism for quasi degenerate neutrinos

We discuss symmetries and scenarios leading to quasi-degenerate neutrinos in type-I seesaw models. The existence of degeneracy in the present approach is not linked to any specific structure for the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix $y_D$ and holds in general. Basic input is the application of the minimal flavour violation principle to the leptonic sector. Generalizing this principle, we assume that the structure of the right handed neutrino mass matrix is determined by $y_D$ and the charged lepton Yukawa coupling matrix $y_l$ in an effective theory invariant under specific groups ${\cal G}_F$ contained in the full symmetry group of the kinetic energy terms. ${\cal G}_F$ invariance also leads to specific structure for the departure from degeneracy. The neutrino mass matrix (with degenerate mass $m_0$) resulting after seesaw mechanism has a simple form ${\cal M}_ν\approx m_0(I-p y_ly_l^T)$ in one particular scenario based on supersymmetry. This form is shown to lead to correct description of neutrino masses and mixing angles. The thermal leptogenesis after inclusion of flavour effects can account for the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe within the present scenario. Rates for lepton flavour violating processes can occur at observable levels in the supersymmetric version of the scenario.

Non-vanishing $U_{e3}$ and $\cos{2 θ_{23}}$ from a broken $Z_2$ symmetry

It is shown that the neutrino mass matrices in the flavour basis yielding a vanishing $U_{e3}$ are characterized by invariance under a class of $Z_2$ symmetries. A specific $Z_2$ in this class also leads to a maximal atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$. The breaking of that $Z_2$ can be parameterized by two dimensionless quantities, $\e$ and $\e'$; the effects of $\e, \e' \neq 0$ are studied perturbatively and numerically. The induced value of $\ue3$ strongly depends on the neutrino mass hierarchy. We find that $\ue3$ is less than 0.07 for a normal mass hierarchy, even when $\e, \e' \sim 30 %$. For an inverted mass hierarchy $\ue3$ tends to be around 0.1 but can be as large as 0.17. In the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, $\ue3$ could be close to its experimental upper bound 0.2. In contrast, $| \cos{2θ_{23}} |$ can always reach its experimental upper bound 0.28. We propose a specific model, based on electroweak radiative corrections in the MSSM, for $\e$ and $\e'$. In that model, both $\ue3$ and $| \cos{2 θ_{23}} |$, could be close to their respective experimental upper bounds if neutrinos are quasi-degenerate.

Bi-maximal mixing and Bilinear R violation

We perform a general analytic study of feasibility of obtaining a combined explanation for the deficits in the solar and the atmospheric neutrino fluxes with two large mixing angles in supersymmetric model with bilinear R parity violations. The required hierarchy among the solar and atmospheric neutrino mass scales follows in this framework in the presence of an approximate Higgs - slepton universality at the weak scale. The solar mixing angle is shown to be related to non-universality in slepton mass terms specifically to differences in soft parameters of the first two leptonic generations. It is shown that this flavour universality violation should be as strong as the Higgs-slepton universality violation if solar neutrino mixing angle is to be large. The standard supergravity models with universal boundary conditions at a high scale lead to the required Higgs-slepton universality violations but the predicted violation of flavour universality among the first two generations is much smaller than required. This model therefore cannot provide an explanation of large solar neutrino mixing angle unless some universality violations in soft supersymmetry breaking parameters are introduced at a high scale itself.

Predictive Framework with a Pair of Degenerate Neutrinos at a high scale

Radiative generation of the solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ is discussed in the presence of leptonic CP violation. We assume that both the solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are zero at a high scale and the weak radiative corrections generate them. It is shown that all leptonic mass matrices satisfying these requirements lead to a unique prediction $Δ_{\odot} \cos 2θ_{\odot}\approx 4 δ_τ\sin^2 θ_A |m_{ee}|^2$ for the solar scale in terms of the radiative correction parameter $δ_τ$, the physical solar (atmospheric) mixing angles $θ_{odot} (θ_A)$ and the Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This relation is independent of the mixing matrix and CP-violating phases at the high scale. The presence of CP-violating phases leads to dilution in the solar mixing angle defined at the high scale. Because of this, bi-maximal mixing pattern at the high energy leads to large but non-maximal solar mixing in the low-energy theory. An illustrative model with this feature is discussed.

preprint2002arXiv

Radiative origin of solar scale and U_{e3}

We make a general study of possibility of generating solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ and the CHOOZ angle $U_{e3}$ radiatively by assuming that they are zero at some high scale. The most general neutrino mass matrix leading to this result is determined in a CP conserving theory. This matrix contains four independent parameters which can be fixed in terms of physical observables. The standard weak radiative corrections then lead to non-zero $Δ_{\odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ without drastically altering the other tree level results. As a consequence, both $Δ_{\odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ are predicted in terms of other physically observable parameters. These predictions are insensitive to specific form of the neutrino mass matrix. The solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are strongly correlated with the effective neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. In particular, the LMA solution to the solar neutrino problem arise for $m_{ee}$ close to the present experimental limit. An example of specific texture is presented which predicts maximal atmospheric mixing and $\tan^2 θ_{\odot}\approx 0.5$ for the solar mixing angle $θ_{\odot}$.

Vacuum Solutions of Neutrino Anomalies Through a Softly Broken U(1) symmetry

We discuss an extended SU(2)XU(1) model which naturally leads to mass scales and mixing angles relevant for understanding both the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies in terms of the vacuum oscillations of the three known neutrinos. The model uses a softly broken L_e-L_μ-L_τ symmetry and contains a heavy scale M_H\sim 10^{15} GeV. The L_e-L_μ-L_τ symmetric neutrino masses solve the atmospheric neutrino anomaly while breaking of L_e-L_μ-L_τ generates highly suppressed radiative mass scale Δ_S\sim 10^{-10} eV^2 needed for the vacuum solution of the solar neutrino problem. All the neutrino masses in the model are inversely related to M_H, thus providing seesaw-type of masses without invoking any heavy right-handed neutrinos. Possible embedding of the model into an SU(5) grand unified theory is discussed.

Neutrino Mass Constraints on R violation and HERA anomaly

R parity violating trilinear couplings $λ'_{1jk}$ of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) are constrained from the limit on the electron neutrino mass. Strong limits on these couplings follow from the earlier neglected contribution due to sneutrino vacuum expectation values. The limits on most of the $λ'_{1jk}$ couplings derived here are stronger than the existing ones for a wide range in parameters of MSSM. These limits strongly constrain the interpretation of recent HERA results in $e^+ p$ scattering in terms of production of squarks through $R$ violating couplings. In particular, the interpretation in terms of $\tilde{t}_L$ production off strange quark as suggested recently is not viable for wide ranges in MSSM parameters.

Automatic CP Invariance and Flavor Symmetry

The approximate conservation of $CP$ can be naturally understood if it arises as an automatic symmetry of the renormalizable Lagrangian. We present a specific realistic example with this feature. In this example, the global Peccei-Quinn symmetry and gauge symmetries of the model make the renormalizable Lagrangian $CP$ invariant but allow non zero hierarchical masses and mixing among the three generations. The left-right and a horizontal $U(1)_H$ symmetry is imposed to achieve this. The non-renormalizable interactions invariant under these symmetries violate $CP$ whose magnitude can be in the experimentally required range if $U(1)_H$ is broken at very high, typically, near the grand unification scale.
