Restricting $q^2 l^2$ operators from $π^0 \rightarrow μe$

In this paper we consider semileptonic lepton flavor violating operators of the type $q^2l^2$ in low energy effective theory (LEFT). At the chiral scale, we match these operators to chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) and place constraints from the process $π^0\rightarrow μ^+ \,\, e^-$. These bounds are shown to depend on the chiral nature of the operators. The scalar operators are significantly more constrained compared to the vector operators. We then compare the limits from $μ\to e$ conversion in Nuclei and show that the limits on scalar operators are within an order of magnitude of the corresponding limits from $μ\to e$ conversion in Ti. On the other hand, the limits on vector operators are however much weaker. Towards the end, we evolve the LEFT operators to W-boson mass scale using RGE, and match them to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) operators. We, then, derive the constraints on the parameter space of Leptoquark models that could generate these SMEFT operators at tree level.

Diluting SUSY flavour problem on the Landscape

We consider an explicit effective field theory example based on the Bousso-Polchinski framework with a large number N of hidden sectors contributing to supersymmetry breaking. Each contribution comes from four form quantized fluxes, multiplied by random couplings. The soft terms in the observable sector in this case become random variables, with mean values and standard deviations which are computable. We show that this setup naturally leads to a solution of the flavor problem in low-energy supersymmetry if N is sufficiently large. We investigate the consequences for flavor violating processes at low-energy and for dark matter.

Bulk RS models, Electroweak Precision tests and the 125 GeV Higgs

We present upto date electroweak fits of various Randall Sundrum (RS) models. We consider the bulk RS model, deformed RS and the custodial RS models. For the bulk RS case we find the lightest Kaluza Klein (KK) mode of the gauge boson to be $\sim 8$ TeV while for the custodial case it is $\sim 3$ TeV. The deformed model is the least fine tuned of all which can give a good fit for KK masses $< 2$ TeV depending on the choice of the model parameters. We also comment on the fine tuning in each case.

Gravitational rescue of minimal gauge mediation

Gravity mediation supersymmetry breaking become comparable to gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking contributions when messenger masses are close to the GUT scale. By suitably tuning the gravity contributions one can then modify the soft supersymmetry breaking sector to generate a large stop mixing parameter and a light higgs mass of 125 GeV. In this kind of hybrid models, however the nice features of gauge mediation like flavour conservation etc, are lost. To preserve the nice features, gravitational contributions should become important for lighter messenger masses and should be important only for certain fields. This is possible when the hidden sector contains multiple (at least two) spurions with hierarchical vaccum expectation values. In this case, the gravitational contribtutions can be organised to be `just right'. We present a complete model with two spurion hidden sector where the gravitational contribution is from a warped flavour model in a Randall-Sundrum setting. Along the way, we present simple expressions to handle renormalisation group equations when supersymmetry is broken by two different sectors at two different scales.

A little more Gauge Mediation and the light Higgs mass

We consider minimal models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking with an extra $U(1)$ factor in addition to the Standard Model gauge group. A $U(1)$ charged, Standard Model singlet is assumed to be present which allows for an additional NMSSM like coupling, $λH_u H_d S$. The U(1) is assumed to be flavour universal. Anomaly cancellation in the MSSM sector requires additional coloured degrees of freedom. The $S$ field can get a large vacuum expectation value along with consistent electroweak symmetry breaking. It is shown that the lightest CP even Higgs boson can attain mass of the order of 125 GeV.

Anatomy of Higgs mass in Supersymmetric Inverse Seesaw Models

We compute the one loop corrections to the CP even Higgs mass matrix in the supersymmetric inverse seesaw model to single out the different cases where the radiative corrections from the neutrino sector could become important. It is found that there could be a significant enhancement in the Higgs mass even for Dirac neutrino masses of $\mathcal{O}$(30) GeV if the left-handed sneutrino soft mass is comparable or larger than the right-handed neutrino mass. In the case where right-handed neutrino masses are significantly larger than the supersymmety breaking scale, the corrections can utmost account to an upward shift of 3 GeV. For very heavy multi TeV sneutrinos, the corrections replicate the stop corrections at 1-loop. We further show that general gauge mediation with inverse seesaw model naturally accommodates a 125 GeV Higgs with TeV scale stops.

Limiting two-Higgs-doublet models

We update the constraints on two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs) focusing on the parameter space relevant to explain the present muon $g$$-$$2$ anomaly, $Δa_μ$, in four different types of models, type I, II, "lepton specific" (or X) and "flipped" (or Y). We show that the strong constraints provided by the electroweak precision data on the mass of the pseudoscalar Higgs, whose contribution may account for $Δa_μ$, are evaded in regions where the charged scalar is degenerate with the heavy neutral one and the mixing angles $α$ and $β$ satisfy the Standard Model limit $β-α\approx π/2$. We combine theoretical constraints from vacuum stability and perturbativity with direct and indirect bounds arising from collider and $B$~physics. Possible future constraints from the electron $g$$-$$2$ are also considered. If the 126 GeV resonance discovered at the LHC is interpreted as the light CP-even Higgs boson of the 2HDM, we find that only models of type X can satisfy all the considered theoretical and experimental constraints.

Constraints on axino warm dark matter from X-ray observation at the Chandra telescope and SPI

A sufficiently long lived warm dark matter could be a source of X-rays observed by satellite based X-ray telescopes. We consider axinos and gravitinos with masses between 1 keV and 100 keV in supersymmetric models with small R-parity violation. We show that axino dark matter receives significant constraints from X-ray observations of Chandra and SPI, especially for the lower end of the allowed range of the axino decay constant $f_{a}$, while the gravitino dark matter remains unconstrained.

Flavored Co-annihilations

Neutralino dark matter in supersymmetric models is revisited in the presence of flavor violation in the soft supersymmetry breaking sector. We focus on flavor violation in the sleptonic sector and study the implications for the co-annihilation regions. Flavor violation is introduced by a single $\tildeμ_R-\tildeτ_R$ insertion in the slepton mass matrix. Limits on this insertion from BR($τ\to μ+ γ$) are weak in some regions of the parameter space where cancellations happen within the amplitudes. We look for overlaps in parameter space where both the co-annihilation condition as well as the cancellations within the amplitudes occur. In mSUGRA, such overlap regions are not existent, whereas they are present in models with non-universal Higgs boundary conditions (NUHM). The effect of flavor violation is two fold: (a) it shifts the co-annihilation regions towards lighter neutralino masses (b) the co-annihilation cross sections would be modified with the inclusion of flavor violating diagrams which can contribute significantly. Even if flavor violation is within the presently allowed limits, this is sufficient to modify the thermally averaged cross-sections by about (10-15)% in mSUGRA and (20-30)% in NUHM, depending on the parameter space. In the overlap regions, the flavor violating cross sections become comparable and in some cases even dominant to the flavor conserving ones. A comparative study of the channels is presented for mSUGRA and NUHM cases.

Introduction to MSSM

These lecture notes are from a first course on the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The level of the notes is introductory and pedagogical. Standard Model, basic supersymmetry algebra and its representations are considered as prerequisites. The topics covered include particle content, structure of the lagrangian, supersymmetry breaking soft terms, electroweak symmetry breaking and the sparticle mass spectrum. Popular supersymmetry breaking models like minimal supergravity and gauge mediation are also introduced.

Lepton Masses and Flavor Violation in Randall Sundrum Model

Lepton masses and mixing angles via localization of 5D fields in the bulk are revisited in the context of Randall-Sundrum models. The Higgs is assumed to be localized on the IR brane. Three cases for neutrino masses are considered: (a) The higher dimensional LH.LH operator (b) Dirac masses (c) Type I see-saw with bulk Majorana mass terms. Neutrino masses and mixing as well as charged lepton masses are fit in the first two cases using $χ^2$ minimisation for the bulk mass parameters, while varying the $\mathcal{O}(1)$ Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 4. Lepton flavour violation is studied for all the three cases. It is shown that large negative bulk mass parameters are required for the right handed fields to fit the data in the LH LH case. This case is characterized by a very large Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectrum and relatively weak flavour violating constraints at leading order. The zero modes for the charged singlets are composite in this case and their corresponding effective 4-D Yukawa couplings to the KK modes could be large. For the Dirac case, good fits can be obtained for the bulk mass parameters, $c_i$, lying between 0 and 1. However, most of the `best fit regions' are ruled out from flavour violating constraints. In the bulk Majorana terms case, we have solved the profile equations numerically. We give example points for inverted hierarchy and normal hierarchy of neutrino masses. Lepton flavor violating rates are large for these points. We then discuss various minimal flavor violation (MFV) schemes for Dirac and bulk Majorana cases. In the Dirac case with MFV hypothesis, it is possible to simultaneously fit leptonic masses and mixing angles and alleviate lepton flavor violating constraints for Kaluza-Klein modes with masses of around 3 TeV. Similar examples are also provided in the Majorana case.

Postcards from oases in the desert: phenomenology of SUSY with intermediate scales

The presence of new matter fields charged under the Standard Model gauge group at intermediate scales below the Grand Unification scale modifies the renormalization group evolution of the gauge couplings. This can in turn significantly change the running of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters, in particular the gaugino and the scalar masses. In the absence of new large Yukawa couplings we can parameterise all the intermediate scale models in terms of only two parameters controlling the size of the unified gauge coupling. As a consequence of the modified running, the low energy spectrum can be strongly affected with interesting phenomenological consequences. In particular, we show that scalar over gaugino mass ratios tend to increase and the regions of the parameter space with neutralino Dark Matter compatible with cosmological observations get drastically modified. Moreover, we discuss some observables that can be used to test the intermediate scale physics at the LHC in a wide class of models.

SUSEFLAV: program for supersymmetric mass spectra with seesaw mechanism and rare lepton flavor violating decays

Accurate supersymmetric spectra are required to confront data from direct and indirect searches of supersymmetry. \SUSEFLAV is a numerical tool which is capable of computing supersymmetric spectra accurately for various supersymmetric breaking scenarios applicable even in the presence of flavor violation. The program solves MSSM RGEs with complete $3\times3$ flavor mixing at 2-loop level and one loop finite threshold corrections to all MSSM parameters by incorporating radiative electroweak symmetry breaking conditions. The program also incorporates the Type-I seesaw mechanism with three massive right handed neutrinos at user defined mass scales and mixing. It also computes branching ratios of flavor violating processes such as $l_j \rightarrow l_iγ$, $l_j \rightarrow 3 ~l_i$, $b \rightarrow sγ$ and supersymmetric contributions to flavor conserving quantities such as $(g_μ-2)$. A large choice of executables suitable for various operations of the program are provided.

Bounds on fourth generation induced Lepton Flavour Violating double insertions in Supersymmetry

We derive bounds on leptonic double mass insertions of the type $δ^{l}_{i4} δ^{l}_{4j}$ in four generational MSSM, using the present limits on $l_i \to l_j + γ$. Two main features distinguish the rates of these processes in MSSM4 from MSSM3 : (a) tan$β$ is restricted to be very small $\lesssim 3 $ and (b) the large masses for the fourth generation leptons. In spite of small $\tanβ$, there is an enhancement in amplitudes with $llrr$($δ_{i4}^{ll}δ_{4j}^{rr}$) type insertions which pick up the mass of the fourth generation lepton, $m_{τ'}$. We find these bounds to be at least two orders of magnitude more stringent than those in MSSM3.

Four Generations: SUSY and SUSY Breaking

We revisit four generations within the context of supersymmetry. We compute the perturbativity limits for the fourth generation Yukawa couplings and show that if the masses of the fourth generation lie within reasonable limits of their present experimental lower bounds, it is possible to have perturbativity only up to scales around 1000 TeV. Such low scales are ideally suited to incorporate gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, where the mediation scale can be as low as 10-20 TeV. The minimal messenger model, however, is highly constrained. While lack of electroweak symmetry breaking rules out a large part of the parameter space, a small region exists, where the fourth generation stau is tachyonic. General gauge mediation with its broader set of boundary conditions is better suited to accommodate the fourth generation.

Type I seesaw mechanism for quasi degenerate neutrinos

We discuss symmetries and scenarios leading to quasi-degenerate neutrinos in type-I seesaw models. The existence of degeneracy in the present approach is not linked to any specific structure for the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix $y_D$ and holds in general. Basic input is the application of the minimal flavour violation principle to the leptonic sector. Generalizing this principle, we assume that the structure of the right handed neutrino mass matrix is determined by $y_D$ and the charged lepton Yukawa coupling matrix $y_l$ in an effective theory invariant under specific groups ${\cal G}_F$ contained in the full symmetry group of the kinetic energy terms. ${\cal G}_F$ invariance also leads to specific structure for the departure from degeneracy. The neutrino mass matrix (with degenerate mass $m_0$) resulting after seesaw mechanism has a simple form ${\cal M}_ν\approx m_0(I-p y_ly_l^T)$ in one particular scenario based on supersymmetry. This form is shown to lead to correct description of neutrino masses and mixing angles. The thermal leptogenesis after inclusion of flavour effects can account for the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe within the present scenario. Rates for lepton flavour violating processes can occur at observable levels in the supersymmetric version of the scenario.

Large D-terms, hierarchical soft spectra and moduli stabilisation

We derive general expressions for soft terms in supergravity where D-terms contribute significantly to the supersymmetry breaking in addition to the standard F-type breaking terms. Such D-terms can strongly influence the scalar mass squared terms, while having limited impact on gaugino masses and the B-terms. We present parameterisations for the soft terms when D-terms dominate over F-terms or become comparable with them. Novel patterns emerge which can be tested phenomenologically. In a mixed anomaly-D mediated scenario, the scalars have masses from D-mediation, whereas gaugino masses are generated by anomaly mediation. As an application of this analysis, we show that while the "split supersymmetry" like mass spectrum with one fine tuned Higgs is not an automatic outcome of these scenarios, explicit models can be constructed where it can be realised. Finally, we show that large D-mediated supersymmetry breaking can be realised in string models based on intersecting D-branes. Examples are presented where the moduli are stabilised in the presence of large D-terms using non-perturbative gaugino condensation like effects.

Seesaw and Lepton Flavour Violation in SUSY SO(10)

That $μ\to e, γ$ and $τ\to μ,γ$ are sensitive probes of SUSY models with a see-saw mechanism is a well accepted fact. Here we propose a `top-down' approach in a general SUSY SO(10) scheme. In this framework, we show that at least one of the neutrino Yukawa couplings is as large as the top Yukawa coupling. This leads to a strong enhancement of these leptonic flavour changing decay rates. We examine two `extreme' cases, where the lepton mixing angles in the neutrino Yukawa couplings are either small (CKM-like) or large (PMNS-like). In these two cases, we quantify the sensitivity of leptonic radiative decays to the SUSY mass spectrum. In the PMNS case, we find that the ongoing experiments at the B-factories can completely probe the spectrum up to gaugino masses of 500 GeV (any tan $β$). Even in the case of CKM-like mixings, large regions of the parameter space will be probed in the near future, making these two processes leading candidates for indirect SUSY searches.

Bi-maximal mixing and Bilinear R violation

We perform a general analytic study of feasibility of obtaining a combined explanation for the deficits in the solar and the atmospheric neutrino fluxes with two large mixing angles in supersymmetric model with bilinear R parity violations. The required hierarchy among the solar and atmospheric neutrino mass scales follows in this framework in the presence of an approximate Higgs - slepton universality at the weak scale. The solar mixing angle is shown to be related to non-universality in slepton mass terms specifically to differences in soft parameters of the first two leptonic generations. It is shown that this flavour universality violation should be as strong as the Higgs-slepton universality violation if solar neutrino mixing angle is to be large. The standard supergravity models with universal boundary conditions at a high scale lead to the required Higgs-slepton universality violations but the predicted violation of flavour universality among the first two generations is much smaller than required. This model therefore cannot provide an explanation of large solar neutrino mixing angle unless some universality violations in soft supersymmetry breaking parameters are introduced at a high scale itself.

Neutrino Mass Constraints on R violation and HERA anomaly

R parity violating trilinear couplings $λ'_{1jk}$ of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) are constrained from the limit on the electron neutrino mass. Strong limits on these couplings follow from the earlier neglected contribution due to sneutrino vacuum expectation values. The limits on most of the $λ'_{1jk}$ couplings derived here are stronger than the existing ones for a wide range in parameters of MSSM. These limits strongly constrain the interpretation of recent HERA results in $e^+ p$ scattering in terms of production of squarks through $R$ violating couplings. In particular, the interpretation in terms of $\tilde{t}_L$ production off strange quark as suggested recently is not viable for wide ranges in MSSM parameters.
