Use of $Z$ polarization in $e^+e^- \to ZH$ to measure the triple-Higgs coupling

It is shown that a certain angular asymmetry of charged leptons produced in the decay of $Z$ in the process $e^+e^- \to ZH$, related to a tensor polarization component of the $Z$, can be used to constrain the anomalous triple-Higgs coupling, independent of the other anomalous couplings like the $ZZH$ coupling which dominate at tree level. This is because the angular asymmetry is odd under na\" ive time reversal, and hence dependent on loop-level contributions. At a future $e^+e^-$ collider like the International Linear Collider (ILC), for example, a limit of about $3.4$ might be placed on the ratio of the actual triple Higgs coupling to that predicted in the standard model for a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 30 fb$^{-1}$ with electron and positron beams having longitudinal polarization of $-80\%$ and $+30\%$, respectively.

Study of anomalous gauge-Higgs couplings using $Z$ boson polarization at LHC

We estimate model-independent bounds that could be obtained on the anomalous $ZZH$ vertex using polarization parameters of the $Z$ boson produced in the Higgstrahlung process at the LHC. We calculate the eight independent polarization parameters from the spin density matrix elements of the $Z$, which can probe underlying new physics contributions to $ZH$ production. By using the approach that connects these polarization observables to the coefficients in the angular distribution of the decay products of the $Z$, we estimate the limits on the anomalous $ZZH$ coupling that can be obtained at the 14 TeV LHC.

Probing anomalous gauge-Higgs couplings using $Z$ boson polarization at $e^+ e^-$ colliders

We study possible new physics interactions in the $ZZH$ vertex contributing to the Higgsstrahlung process $e^+ e^- \to ZH$ at proposed future $e^+e^-$ colliders using the polarization of the $Z$ as a probe. We calculate the spin density matrix of the $Z$ for the process and determine the eight independent polarization parameters of the $Z$ boson which have the potential to constrain the anomalous couplings. We study angular asymmetries using the decay leptons from the $Z$ boson which are simply related to the polarization observables. We also estimate the limits that can be placed on the anomalous couplings using measurements of these angular asymmetries at centre of mass energies of 250 GeV and 500 GeV and various combinations of polarized $e^+$ and $e^-$ beams.

Effective fermion-Higgs interactions at an $e^+e^-$ collider with polarized beams

We consider the possibility of new physics giving rise to effective interactions of the form $e^+e^-Hf \bar f$, where $f$ represents a charged lepton $\ell$ or a (light) quark $q$, and $H$ the recently discovered Higgs boson. Such vertices would give contributions beyond the standard model to the Higgs production processes $e^+e^- \to H\ell^+\ell^-$ and $e^+e^- \to H q \bar q$ at a future $e^+e^-$ collider. We write the most general form for these vertices allowed by Lorentz symmetry. Assuming that such interactions contribute in addition to the standard model production processes, where the final-state fermion pair comes from the decay of the $Z$ boson, we obtain the differential cross section for the processes $e^+e^- \to H\ell^+\ell^-$ and $e^+e^- \to Hq\bar q$ to linear order in the effective interactions. We propose several observables with differing CP and T properties which, if measured, can be used to constrain the couplings occurring in interaction vertices. We derive possible limits on these couplings that may be obtained at a collider with centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 500 fb$^{-1}$. We also carry out the analysis assuming that both the electron and positron beams can be longitudinally polarized, and find that the sensitivity to the couplings can be improved by a factor of 2-4 by a specific choice of the signs of the polarizations of both the electron and positron beams for the same integrated luminosity.

Unraveling the CP phase of top-Higgs coupling in associated production at the LHC

We study the sensitivity of top polarization observables to the CP phase $ζ_t$ in the top Yukawa coupling in the process $pp\to thj$ at the 14 TeV high-luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). We calculate the top polarization in this process as well as an azimuthal asymmetry of the charged lepton arising from the decay of the top in the lab frame. We find that the dependence of this lab-frame azimuthal asymmetry on the phase $ζ_t$ closely resembles the dependence of the top polarization on $ζ_t$. As compared to the cross section, which is sensitive to $ζ_t$ for larger values, the lepton azimuthal asymmetry can provide a sensitive measurement of $ζ_t$ for smaller values.

Longitudinal top polarisation measurement and anomalous $Wtb$ coupling

Kinematical distributions of decay products of the top quark carry information on the polarisation of the top as well as on any possible new physics in the decay of the top quark. We construct observables in the form of asymmetries in the kinematical distributions to probe their effects. Charged-lepton angular distributions in the decay are insensitive to anomalous couplings to leading order. Hence these can be a robust probe of top polarisation. However, these are difficult to measure in the case of highly boosted top quarks as compared to energy distributions of decay products. These are then sensitive, in general, to both top polarisation and top anomalous couplings. We compare various asymmetries for their sensitivities to the longitudinal polarisation of the top quark as well as to possible new physics in the $Wtb$ vertex, paying special attention to the case of highly boosted top quarks. We perform a $χ^2$- analysis to determine the regions in the longitudinal polarisation of the top quark and the couplings of the $Wtb$ vertex constrained by different combinations of the asymmetries. Moreover, we find that use of observables sensitive to the longitudinal top polarisation can add to the sensitivity to which the $Wtb$ vertex can be probed.

Polarization of the top quark as a probe of its chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings in single-top production at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to top quark chromomagnetic (CMDM) and chromoelectric (CEDM) dipole moments and $Wtb$ effective couplings in single-top production in association with a $W^-$ boson, followed by semileptonic decay of the top. We calculate the top polarization and the effects of these anomalous couplings on it at two centre-of-mass (cm) energies, 8 TeV and 14 TeV. As a measure of top polarization, we look at decay-lepton angular distributions in the laboratory frame, without requiring reconstruction of the rest frame of the top, and study the effect of the anomalous couplings on these distributions. We construct certain asymmetries to study the sensitivity of these distributions to top-quark couplings. The Wt single-top production mode helps to isolate the anomalous $ttg$ and $Wtb$ couplings, in contrast to top-pair production and other single-top production modes, where other new-physics effects can also contribute. We determine individual limits on the dominant couplings, viz., the real part of the CMDM $Reρ_2$, the imaginary part of the CEDM $Imρ_3$, and the real part of the tensor Wtb coupling $Ref_{2r}$, which may be obtained by utilizing these asymmetries at the LHC. We also obtain simultaneous limits on pairs of these couplings taking two couplings to be non-zero at a time.

New Physics in $e^+e^- \rightarrow Z γ$ at the ILC with polarized beams: Explorations beyond conventional anomalous triple gauge boson coupling

One of the most-studied signals for physics beyond the standard model in the production of gauge bosons in electron-positron collisions is that due to the anomalous triple gauge boson couplings in the $Z γ$ final state. In this work, we study the implications of this at the ILC with polarized beams for signals that go beyond traditional anomalous triple neutral gauge boson couplings. Here we report a dimension-8 CP-conserving $Z γZ$ vertex that has not found mention in the literature. We carry out a systematic study of the anomalous couplings in general terms and arrive at a classification. We then obtain linear-order distributions with and without CP violation. Furthermore, we place the study in the context of general BSM interactions represented by $e^+e^- Z γ$ contact interactions. We set up a correspondence between the triple gauge boson couplings and the four-point contact interactions. We also present sensitivities on these anomalous couplings, which will be achievable at the ILC with realistic polarization and luminosity.

Measuring the charged Higgs mass and distinguishing between models with top-quark observables

We study the process of single-top production in association with a charged Higgs boson at the LHC and discuss how top-quark polarization and an azimuthal asymmetry $A_φ$ of the charged lepton from top decay can be used in some extensions of the Standard Model to determine or constrain the charged Higgs boson mass. We also discuss some scenarios where these variables can be used to distinguish between different models.

Probing chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings of the top quark using its polarization in pair production at hadron colliders

The Tevatron, where the top quark was discovered, and the currently functional Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with copiously produced top pairs, enable a detailed study of top-quark properties. In particular, they can be used to test the couplings of the top quark to gauge bosons. Several extensions of the standard model (SM) can give rise to anomalous couplings of the top quark to gauge bosons, in particular, the gluons. In this work we examine how top-quark polarization, which is predicted to be negligibly small in the SM, can be used to measure chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings of the top quark to gluons. We lay special emphasis on the use of angular distributions and asymmetries of charged leptons arising from top decay as measures of top polarization and hence of these anomalous couplings. Sensitivities that may be reached at the Tevatron and the LHC are obtained.

CP violation in tbW couplings at the LHC

We study in a model-independent way anomalous CP-violating tbW effective couplings that might arise from new physics in the processes pp-> tW^- X and pp-> tbar W^+X, followed by semileptonic decay of t and tbar. These processes have a dependence on effective tbW couplings both in the production process as well as in the decay of the t or tbar. We propose several CP-violating asymmetries constructed out of variables in the two processes, including t and tbar polarization, and energy and azimuthal angles of the decay particles. We find that it is feasible to probe a certain CP-violating combination of anomalous couplings at the per cent level at the LHC for centre-of-mass energy 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 10 fb^{-1}.

Generalized top-spin analysis and new physics in $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions with beam polarization

A generalized top-spin analysis proposed some time ago in the context of Standard Model and subsequently studied in varying contexts is now applied primarily to the case of $e^+e^-\rightarrow t\bar{t}$ with transversely polarized beams. This extends our recent work with new physics couplings of scalar ($S$) and tensor ($T$) types. We carry out a comprehensive analysis assuming only the electron beam to be transversely polarized, which is sufficient to probe these interactions, and also eliminates any azimuthal angular dependence due to standard model or new physics of vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) type interactions. We then consider new physics of general four-Fermi type of $V$ and $A$ type with both beams transversely polarized and discuss implications with longitudinal polarization as well. The generalized spin bases are all investigated in the presence of either longitudinal or transverse beam polarization to look for appreciable deviation from the SM prediction in case of the new physics. 90% confidence level limits are obtained on the interactions for the generalized spin bases with realistic integrated luminosity. In order to achieve this we present a general discussion based on helicity amplitudes and derive a general transformation matrix that enables us to treat the spin basis. We find that beamline basis combined with transverse polarization provides an excellent window of opportunity both for $S$, $T$ and $V$, $A$ new physics, followed by the off diagonal basis. The helicity basis is shown to be the best in case of longitudinal polarization to look for new physics effectsdue to $V$ and $A$.

Isolating CP-violating γZZ coupling in e+e- \to γZ with transverse beam polarizations

We revisit the process $e^+e^- \to γZ$ at the ILC with transverse beam polarization in the presence of anomalous CP-violating $γZ Z$ coupling $λ_1$ and $γγZ$ coupling $λ_2$. We point out that if the final-state spins are resolved, then it becomes possible to fingerprint the anomalous coupling {\rm Re}$λ_1$.90% confidence level limit on {\rm Re}$λ_1$ achievable at ILC with center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV or 800 GeV with realistic initial beam polarization and integrated luminosity is of the order of few times of $10^{-2}$ when the helicity of $Z$ is used and $10^{-3}$ when the helicity of $γ$ is used. The resulting corrections at quadratic order to the cross section and its influence on these limits are also evaluated and are shown to be small. The benefits of such polarization programmes at the ILC are compared and contrasted for the process at hand. We also discuss possible methods by which one can isolate events with a definite helicity for one of the final-state particles.

Probing anomalous tbW couplings in single-top production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to anomalous tbW couplings in single-top production in association with a W^- boson followed by semileptonic decay of the top. We calculate top polarization and the effects of these anomalous couplings to it at two centre-of-mass (cm) energies of 7 TeV and 14 TeV. As a measure of top polarization, we look at various laboratory frame distributions of its decay products, viz., lepton angular and energy distributions and b-quark angular distributions, without requiring reconstruction of the rest frame of the top, and study the effect of anomalous couplings on these distributions. We construct certain asymmetries to study the sensitivity of these distributions to anomalous tbW couplings. We find that 1σlimits on real and imaginary parts of the dominant anomalous coupling Ref_{2R} which may be obtained by utilizing these asymmetries at the LHC with cm energy of 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 10 fb^{-1} will be significantly better than the expectations from direct measurements of cross sections and some other variables at the LHC and over an order of magnitude better than the indirect limits.

Probing top charged-Higgs production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider

We study single top production in association with a charged Higgs in the type II two Higgs doublet model at the Large Hadron Collider. The polarization of the top, reflected in the angular distributions of its decay products, can be a sensitive probe of new physics in its production. We present theoretically expected polarizations of the top for top charged-Higgs production, which is significantly different from that in the closely related process of t-W production in the Standard Model. We then show that an azimuthal symmetry, constructed from the decay lepton angular distribution in the laboratory frame, is a sensitive probe of top polarization and can be used to constrain parameters involved in top charged-Higgs production.

Top polarization, forward-backward asymmetry and new physics

We consider how the measurement of top polarization at the Tevatron can be used to characterise and discriminate among different new physics models that have been suggested to explain the anomalous top forward-backward asymmetry reported at the Tevatron. This has the advantage of catching the essence of the parity violating effect characteristic to the different suggested new physics models. Other observables constructed from these asymmetries are shown to be useful in discriminating between the models, even after taking into account the statistical errors. Finally, we discuss some signals at the 7 TeV LHC.

Decay-lepton correlations as probes of anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions in e+e- --> ZH with polarized beams

We examine the contributions of various couplings in general ZZH and gammaZH interactions arising from new physics to the Higgs production process e+e- --> HZ, followed by the decay of the Z into a charged-lepton pair. We take into account possible longitudinal or transverse beam polarization likely to be available at a linear collider. We show how expectation values of certain simple observables in suitable combinations with appropriate longitudinal beam polarizations can be used to disentangle various couplings from one another. Longitudinal polarization can also improve the sensitivity for measurement of several couplings. A striking result is that using transverse polarization, one of the gammaZH couplings, not otherwise accessible, can be determined independently of all other couplings.

On measurement of top polarization as a probe of $t \bar t$ production mechanisms at the LHC

In this note we demonstrate the use of top polarization in the study of $t \bar t$ resonances at the LHC, in the possible case where the dynamics implies a non-zero top polarization. As a probe of top polarization we construct an asymmetry in the decay-lepton azimuthal angle distribution (corresponding to the sign of $\cosϕ_\ell$) in the laboratory. The asymmetry is non-vanishing even for a symmetric collider like the LHC, where a positive $z$ axis is not uniquely defined. The angular distribution of the leptons has the advantage of being a faithful top-spin analyzer, unaffected by possible anomalous $tbW$ couplings, to linear order. We study, for purposes of demonstration, the case of a $Z'$ as might exist in the little Higgs models. We identify kinematic cuts which ensure that our asymmetry reflects the polarization in sign and magnitude. We investigate possibilities at the LHC with two energy options: $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV and $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, as well as at the Tevatron. At the LHC the model predicts net top quark polarization of the order of a few per cent for $M_{Z'} \simeq 1200 $ GeV, being as high as $10 %$ for a smaller mass of the $Z'$ of $700$ GeV and for the largest allowed coupling in the model, the values being higher for the $7$ TeV option. These polarizations translate to a deviation from the standard-model value of azimuthal asymmetry of up to about $4%$ ($7%$) for $14$ ($7$) TeV LHC, whereas for the Tevatron, values as high as $12%$ are attained. For the $14$ TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 10 fb$^{-1}$, these numbers translate into a $3 σ$ sensitivity over a large part of the range $500 \lesssim M_{Z'} \lesssim 1500 $ GeV.

Top-spin analysis of new scalar and tensor interactions in e^+ e^- collisions with beam polarization

We utilize top polarization in the process e+ e-\rightarrow t\bar{t} at the ILC with transverse beam polarization to probe interactions of the scalar and tensor type beyond the standard model and to disentangle their individual contributions. 90% confidence level limits on the interactions with realistic integrated luminosity are presented and are found to improve by an order of magnitude compared to the case when the spin of the top quark is not measured. Sensitivities of the order of a few times 10^{-3} TeV^{-2} for real and imaginary parts of both scalar and tensor couplings at \sqrt{s}=500 and 800 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb^{-1} and completely polarized beams is shown to be possible. A powerful model-independent framework for inclusive measurements is employed to describe the spin-momentum correlations and their C, P and T properties is presented in a technical appendix.

Angular distributions as a probe of anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions at a linear collider with polarized beams

We examine the contribution of general Z*ZH and gamma*ZH three-point interactions arising from new physics to the Higgs production process e+e- -> HZ. From Lorentz covariance, each of these vertices may be written in terms of three (complex) form factors, whose real and imaginary parts together make six independent couplings. We take into account possible longitudinal or transverse beam polarization likely to be available at a linear collider. We show how partial cross sections and angular asymmetries in suitable combinations with appropriate beam polarizations, can be used to disentangle various couplings from one another. A striking result is that using transverse polarization, one of the gammaZH couplings, not otherwise accessible, can be determined independently of all other couplings. Transverse polarization also helps in the independent determination of a combination of two other couplings, in contrast to a combination of four accessible with unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beams. We also obtain the sensitivity of the various observables in constraining the new-physics interactions at a linear collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV with longitudinal or transverse polarization.

Strong gauge boson scattering at the LHC

In the standard model with electroweak symmetry breaking through the Higgs mechanism, electroweak gauge-boson scattering amplitudes are large if the Higgs boson is heavy, and electroweak gauge interactions become strong. In theories with electroweak symmetry breaking through alternative mechanisms, there could be a strongly interacting gauge sector, possibly with resonances in an accessible energy region. In general, the scattering of longitudinally polarized massive gauge bosons can give information on the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking. At energies below the symmetry breaking scale, the equivalence theorem relates the scattering amplitudes to those of the "would-be" Goldstone modes. In the absence of Higgs bosons, unitarity would be restored by some new physics which can be studied through WW scattering. Some representatives models are discussed. Isolating WW scattering at a hadron collider from other contributions involving W emission from parton lines needs a good understanding of the backgrounds. Resonances, if they exist below about a TeV, would be feasible of observation at the LHC.

Charged lepton distributions as a probe of contact e+e-HZ interactions at a linear collider with polarized beams

We examine very general four-point interactions arising from new physics and contributing to the Higgs production process e+e- -> HZ. We write all possible forms for these interactions consistent with Lorentz invariance. We allow the possibility of CP violation. Contributions to the process from anomalous ZZH and gamma ZH interactions studied earlier arise as a special case of our four-point amplitude. We consider the decay of Z into a charged lepton pair and obtain expressions for angular distributions of charged leptons arising from the interference of the four-point contribution with the standard-model contribution. We take into account possible longitudinal or transverse beam polarization likely to be available at a linear collider. We examine several correlations which can be used to study the various form factors present in the e+e-HZ contact interactions. We also obtain the sensitivity of these correlations in constraining the new-physics interactions at a linear collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV with longitudinal or transverse polarization.

Decay of Spin-One Particle into Two Photons in Presence of Uniform External Magnetic Field

Yang's theorem states that an initial J=1 state cannot decay into two photons. Because of this result some reactions relating to elementary particles or atomic transitions can be ruled out. The theorem is not valid in the presence of background electric or magnetic fields. In this work we show that the decay of a J=1 particle into two photons is permitted by Bose symmetry and rotational invariance when the background of the decay process is not pure vacuum but contains an external classical magnetic/electric field. We also discuss constraints on these amplitudes from {\bf CP} invariance.

Probing CP-violating Higgs contributions in gamma-gamma -> f anti-f through fermion polarization

We discuss the use of fermion polarization for studying neutral Higgs bosons at a photon collider. To this aim we construct polarization asymmetries which can isolate the contribution of a Higgs boson $ϕ$ in $γγ\to f \bar f$, $f=τ/t$, from that of the QED continuum. This can help in getting information on the $γγϕ$ coupling in case $ϕ$ is a CP eigenstate. We also construct CP-violating asymmetries which can probe CP mixing in case $ϕ$ has indeterminate CP. Furthermore, we take the MSSM with CP violation as an example to demonstrate the potential of these asymmetries in a numerical analysis. We find that these asymmetries are sensitive to the presence of a Higgs boson as well as its CP properties over a wide range of MSSM parameters. In particular, the method suggested can cover the region where a light Higgs boson may have been missed by LEP due to CP violation in the Higgs sector, and may be missed as well at the LHC.

Transverse beam polarization and CP violation in e+ e- -> gamma Z with contact interactions

We consider the most general gauge-invariant, chirality-conserving contact interactions in the process e +e- -> gamma Z, of the type proposed Abraham and Lampe, in order to explore the possibility of CP violation at future linear colliders in the presence of polarized beams. We hereby extend recent work on CP violation due to anomalous triple-gauge boson vertices. We isolate combinations of couplings which are genuinely CP violating, pointing out which of these can only be studied with the use of transverse polarization. We place constraints on these couplings that could arise from suitably defined CP-odd asymmetries, considering realistic polarization (either longitudinal or transverse) of 80% and 60% for the electron and positron beams respectively, and with an integrated luminosity \int dt L of 500 fb^{-1} at a centre of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=500 GeV.

CP-Violation in the Production of Tau-Leptons at TESLA with Beam Polarization

We study the prospects of discovering CP-violation in the production of tau-leptons in the reaction {e+e- --> tau+tau- at TESLA, an e+e- linear collider with center-of-mass energies of 500 or even 800 GeV. Non-vanishing expectation values of certain correlations between the momenta of the decay products of the two tau leptons would signalthe presence of CP-violation beyond the standard model. We study how longitudinal beam polarization of the electron and positron beams will enhance these correlations. We find that T-odd and T-even vector correlations are well suited for the measurements of the real and imaginary parts of the electric dipole form factors. We expect measurements of the real part with a precision of roughly 10^-20 ecm and of the imaginary part of 10^-17 ecm. This compares well with the size of the expected effects in many extensions of the standard model.

Predictive Framework with a Pair of Degenerate Neutrinos at a high scale

Radiative generation of the solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ is discussed in the presence of leptonic CP violation. We assume that both the solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are zero at a high scale and the weak radiative corrections generate them. It is shown that all leptonic mass matrices satisfying these requirements lead to a unique prediction $Δ_{\odot} \cos 2θ_{\odot}\approx 4 δ_τ\sin^2 θ_A |m_{ee}|^2$ for the solar scale in terms of the radiative correction parameter $δ_τ$, the physical solar (atmospheric) mixing angles $θ_{odot} (θ_A)$ and the Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This relation is independent of the mixing matrix and CP-violating phases at the high scale. The presence of CP-violating phases leads to dilution in the solar mixing angle defined at the high scale. Because of this, bi-maximal mixing pattern at the high energy leads to large but non-maximal solar mixing in the low-energy theory. An illustrative model with this feature is discussed.

QCD corrections to decay-lepton polar and azimuthal angular distributions in e+e- -> t tbar in the soft-gluon approximation

QCD corrections to order alpha_s in the soft-gluon approximation to angular distributions of decay charged leptons in the process e+e- -> t tbar followed by semileptonic decay of t or tbar, are obtained in the e+e- centre-of-mass frame. As compared to distributions in the top rest frame, these have the advantage that they would allow direct comparison with experiment without the need to reconstruct the top rest frame. The results also do not depend on the choice of a spin quantization axis for t or tbar. Analytic expression for the triple distribution in the polar angle of t and polar and azimuthal angles of the lepton is obtained. Analytic expression is also derived for the distribution in the charged-lepton polar angle. Numerical values are discussed for total c.m. energies of 400 GeV, 800 GeV and 1500 GeV.

Study of CP Property of the Higgs at a Photon Collider using $γγ\to t\bar t\to l X $

We study possible effects of CP violation in the Higgs sector on $t\bar t$ production at a $γγ$-collider. These studies are performed in a model-independent way in terms of six form-factors $\{\Re(S_γ), \Im(S_γ), \Re(P_γ), \Im(P_γ), S_t, P_t\}$ which parametrize the CP mixing in the Higgs sector, and a strategy for their determination is developed. We observe that the angular distribution of the decay lepton from $t/\bar t$ produced in this process is independent of any CP violation in the $tbW$ vertex and hence best suited for studying CP mixing in the Higgs sector. Analytical expressions are obtained for the angular distribution of leptons in the c.m. frame of the two colliding photons for a general polarization state of the incoming photons. We construct combined asymmetries in the initial state lepton (photon) polarization and the final state lepton charge. They involve CP even ($x$'s) and odd ($y$'s) combinations of the mixing parameters. We study limits up to which the values of $x$ and $y$, with only two of them allowed to vary at a time, can be probed by measurements of these asymmetries, using circularly polarized photons. We use the numerical values of the asymmetries predicted by various models to discriminate among them. We show that this method can be sensitive to the loop-induced CP violation in the Higgs sector in the MSSM.

Longitudinal quark polarization in e+e- --> t tbar and chromoelectric and chromomagnetic dipole couplings of the top quark

The effect of anomalous chromomagnetic (mu) and chromoelectric couplings (d) of the gluon to the top quark are considered in e+ e- --> t tbar, with unpolarized and longitudinally polarized electron beams. The total cross section, as well as t and tbar polarizations are calculated to order alpha_s in the presence of the anomalous couplings. One of the two linear combinations of t and tbar polarizations is CP even, while the other is CP odd. The limits that could be obtained at a typical future linear collider with an integrated luminosity of 50 1/fb and a total c.m. energy of 500 GeV on the most sensitive CP-even combination of anomalous couplings are estimated as -3 < Re(mu) < 2 for Im(mu) = 0 = d, and sqrt{Im(mu)^2 + |d|^2} < 2.25 for Re(mu) = 0. There is an improvement by roughly a factor of 2 at 1000 GeV. On the other hand, from the CP-odd combination, we derive the possible complementary bounds as -3.6 < Im(mu^* d) < 3.6 for Im(d) = 0, and -10 < Im(d) < 10 for Im(mu^* d) = 0, at a c.m. energy of 500 GeV. The corresponding limit for 1000 GeV is almost an order of magnitude better for Im(mu^* d), though somewhat worse for Im(d). Results for the c.m. energies 500 GeV and 1000 GeV, if combined, would yield independen limits on the two CP-violating parameters of -0.8 < Im(mu^* d) < 0.8 and -11 < Im(d) < 11.

Vacuum Solutions of Neutrino Anomalies Through a Softly Broken U(1) symmetry

We discuss an extended SU(2)XU(1) model which naturally leads to mass scales and mixing angles relevant for understanding both the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies in terms of the vacuum oscillations of the three known neutrinos. The model uses a softly broken L_e-L_μ-L_τ symmetry and contains a heavy scale M_H\sim 10^{15} GeV. The L_e-L_μ-L_τ symmetric neutrino masses solve the atmospheric neutrino anomaly while breaking of L_e-L_μ-L_τ generates highly suppressed radiative mass scale Δ_S\sim 10^{-10} eV^2 needed for the vacuum solution of the solar neutrino problem. All the neutrino masses in the model are inversely related to M_H, thus providing seesaw-type of masses without invoking any heavy right-handed neutrinos. Possible embedding of the model into an SU(5) grand unified theory is discussed.

Electric dipole moment of top quark and CP-violating asymmetries in gamma gamma -> t tbar

CP-violating asymmetries due to a possible electric dipole interaction of the top quark in the production and subsequent decay of top quark-top antiquark pair in photon-photon collisions are studied. The asymmetries defined can be used to determine the imaginary part of the electric dipole form factors. A gamma-gamma collider with photon beams generated from laser back-scattering off electron beams with an integrated geometric luminosity of 20 fb^{-1} can put a limit of the order of 10^{-17} e cm on the imaginary part of the electric dipole form factor of the top quark if the electron beams have longitudinal polarization and the laser beams have circular polarization.

Single-quark spin asymmetries in e+ e- ---> t tbar and anomalous gluon couplings

The effect of anomalous chromoelectric couplings of the gluon to the top quark are considered in e+ e- --> t tbar. The total cross section, as well as t and tbar polarizations are calculated to order alpha_s in the presence of the anomalous couplings. One of the two linear combinations of t and tbar polarizations is CP even, while the other is CP odd. Limits that could be obtained at a future linear collider on CP-odd combinations of anomalous couplings are determined.

Decay-lepton angular distribution in polarized $e^+e^- \to \tt$ and $CP$-violating dipole couplings of the top quark

In the presence of an electric dipole coupling of $t \bar t$ to a photon, and an analogous ``weak" dipole coupling to the $Z$, $CP$ violation in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow t \bar t$ leads to the polarization of the top and anti-top. This polarization can be analyzed by studying the energy and angular distributions of a decay charged lepton (anti-lepton) when the top (anti-top) decays leptonically. We have obtained analytic expressions for these distributions when either $t$ or $\overline t$ decays leptonically. We study two types of simple $CP$-violating angular asymmetries which do not need tof simple $CP$-violating angular asymmetries which do not need the full reconstruction of the $t$ or $\bar t$. These together can help to determine the electric and weak dipole form factors independently. We have also shown how the use of longitudinal beam polarization can help to do this with only one asymmetry measurement, and to imprhelp to do this with only one asymmetry measurement, and to improve the sensitivity.

CP violation at colliders

The prospects of experimental detection of $CP$ violation at $e^+e^-$ and $pp/p\overline{p}$ colliders are reviewed. After a general discussion on the quantities which can measure $CP$ violation and on the implications of the $CPT$ theorem, various possibilities of measuring $CP$ violation arising outside the standard model are taken up. $CP$ violation in leptonic processes, especially polarization effects in $e^+e^-\rightarrow l^+l^-$ are discussed next. $CP$ violation in $t\overline{t}$ and $W^+W^-$ production and decay is also described. CP-Violatiing Asymmetries in $e^+e^-\ra t\bar{t}$ with Longitudinally Polarized Elecrtons

New CP-violating asymmetries of decay leptons in $e^+\,e^-\;\ra\;t\,\bar{t}$, arising from electric and weak dipole couplings of $t\,\bar{t}$ to $γ$ and $Z$, are examined in the case of unpolarized and longitudinally polarized electrons. The new asymmetries measured together with the old ones can help to determine independently the real and imaginary parts of the electric as well as weak dipole couplings. Longitudinal beam polarization, if present, obviates the need for the simultaneous measurement of more than one asymmetry, and enhances considerably the sensitivity to the CP-violating parameters. Numerical results are presented for the Next Linear Collider with $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV and $\int{\cal L}\,dt\;=\;10\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$.

Effect of longitudinal electron polarization in the measurement of the $τ$ weak dipole moment in $e^+e^-$ collisions

We show that certain CP-odd momentum correlations in the production and subsequent decay of tau pairs in $e^+e^-$ collisions get enhanced when the electron beam is longitudinally polarized. Analytic expressions for these correlations are obtained when $τ^+τ^-$ have a ``weak" dipole form factor (WDFF) coupling to $Z$ in the case of two-body decay modes of the $τ$. Expressions of the variance of these correlations due to the standard model interactions are also presented. For $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $Z$ peak, a sensitivity of about $10^{-17} e$ cm for the real part of the $τ$ WDFF and $3\times 10^{-17} e$ cm for the imaginary part of the $τ$ WDFF can be reached using $π$ and $ρ$ channels (which are the most sensitive channels) in $τ$ decay, with $10^6\, Z$'s likely to be available at the SLC at Stanford with $e^-$ polarization of 62\%-75\%.

Test of $CP$ Violating Neutral Gauge Boson Vertices in $ e^+ e^- \rightarrow γZ $

Forward-backward asymmetry in the process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow γZ$ is proposed as a test for $CP$--violating anomalous $γγZ$ and $ γZ Z$ couplings. Longitudinally polarized electron beams may be used to disentangle the effects of these couplings. We estimate possible limits that can be obtained from $e^+ e^-$ colliders at centre-of-mass energies of 200 GeV and 500 GeV.

Weak dipole moment of $τ$ in $e^+e^-$ collisions with longitudinally polarized electrons

It is pointed out that certain CP-odd momentum correlations in the production and subsequent decay of tau pairs in $e^+e^-$ collisions get enhanced when the $e^-$ is longitudinally polarized. Analytic expressions for these correlations are obtained for the single-pion decay mode of $τ$ when $τ^+τ^-$ have a ``weak" dipole form factor (WDFF) coupling to $Z$ . For $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $Z$ peak, a sensitivity of about 1-5$\times 10^{-17}$\mbox{$e$ cm} for the $τ$ WDFF can be reached using a {\em single} $τ^+τ^-$ decay channel, with $10^6\, Z$'s likely to be available at the SLC at Stanford with $e^-$ polarization of 62\%-75\%.
