Basis for time crystal phenomena in ultra-cold atoms bouncing on an oscillating mirror

We consider classical dynamics of a 1D system of $N$ particles bouncing on an oscillating mirror in the presence of gravitational field. The particles behave like hard balls and they are resonantly driven by the mirror. We identify the manifolds the particles move on and derive the effective secular Hamiltonian for resonant motion of the particles. Proper choice of time periodic oscillations of the mirror allows for engineering of the effective behaviour of the particles. In particular, the system can behave like a $N$-dimensional fictitious particle moving in an $N$-dimensional crystalline structure. Our classical analysis constitutes a basis for quantum research of novel time crystal phenomena in ultra-cold atoms bouncing on an oscillating atom mirror.

Gravitational time dilation, free fall, and matter waves

We demonstrate that a de Broglie wave of a particle in a gravitational field turns towards the region of a smaller gravitational potential, causing the particle to fall. This turning is caused by clocks running slower in the smaller potential. We use the analogy of ocean waves that are slower in shallower water and turn towards beaches. This approach explains the free fall qualitatively and quantitatively without postulating motion along geodesics and with only elementary algebra.

Negative energy states in pionic hydrogen

Probabilities of finding an antiparticle in an atom or ion containing a particle of spin 1/2 or spin 0 are determined. The spin 1/2 case was previously solved by Hans Bethe and his work is summarized. The spin 0 case is treated numerically for an arbitrary atomic number and analytically for small atomic numbers. The main tool for the spin 0 case is the Feshbach-Villars representation of the Klein-Gordon equation.

Pion Beta Decay and CKM Unitarity

Pion beta decay, $π^+\to π^0 e^+ν(γ)$, provides a theoretically clean $\pm 0.3\%$ determination of the CKM matrix element $V_{\text{ud}}$. That value falls short of super-allowed nuclear beta decays where an order of magnitude better precision already exists. We advocate a new strategy for utilizing pion beta decay, based on its role in determining ${V_{\text{us}} / V_{\text{ud}}}$ via the ratio $R_V=Γ\left(K\to πl ν(γ)\right)/Γ\left(π^+\to π^0 e^+ν(γ)\right)$. $R_V$ measures $ { f_+^K(0) |V_{\text{us}}| / f_+^π(0) |V_{\text{ud}}| }$ and is insensitive to the Fermi constant and some radiative corrections. Its dependence on the ratio of form factors may also prove useful for lattice gauge theory calculations. Employing a lattice based value ${ f_+^K(0) / f_+^π(0) } = 0.970(2)$, we find $V_{\text{us}}/V_{\text{ud}}=0.22918(88)$ compared to $V_{\text{us}}/V_{\text{ud}}=0.23131(45)$ obtained from $R_A=Γ(K\to μν(γ))/Γ(π\to μν(γ))$. Those vector and axial-vector based $V_{\text{us}}/V_{\text{ud}}$ values exhibit a 2.2$σ$ discrepancy. That tension may be relieved by a shift in the lattice $ { f_+^K(0) / f_+^π(0) } $ towards the consistency range 0.961(4), changes in experimental input or new physics. Other implications of $R_V$ and $R_A$ are also discussed.

Bound muon decay spectrum in the leading logarithmic accuracy

We compute the dominant, logarithmically enhanced radiative corrections to the electron spectrum in the bound muon decay in the whole experimentally interesting range. The corrected spectrum fits well the TWIST results. The remaining theoretical error, dominated by the nuclear charge distribution, can be reduced in the muon-electron conversion searches by measuring the spectrum slightly below the New Physics signal window.

Light-by-light scattering in the Lamb shift and the bound electron g factor

We compute an $\mathcal{O}\left(α^2(Zα)^6\right)$ contribution to the hydrogen-atom Lamb shift arising from the light-by-light scattering. Analogous diagrams, with one atomic electric field insertion replaced by an external magnetic field, contribute to the gyromagnetic factor of the bound electron at $\mathcal{O}\left(α^2(Zα)^4\right)$. We also calculate the contribution to the gyromagnetic factor from the muon magnetic loop.

On normality of f.pk-structures on g-manifolds

We consider higher dimensional generalisations of normal almost contact structures, the so called f.pk-structures where parallelism spans a Lie algebra g (f.pk-g-structures). Two types of these structures are discussed. In the first case, we construct an almost complex structure on a product manifold mirroring K-structures. We show that the natural normality condition can be satisfied only when g is abelian. The second case we consider is when the Lie algebra in question is 3-dimensional, but the almost complex structure on a product is constructed in a different manner. In both cases the normality conditions are expressed in terms of the structure tensors.

High-energy electrons from the muon decay in orbit: radiative corrections

We determine the $\mathcal{O}(α)$ correction to the energy spectrum of electrons produced in the decay of muons bound in atoms. We focus on the high-energy end of the spectrum that constitutes a background for the muon-electron conversion and will be precisely measured by the upcoming experiments Mu2e and COMET. The correction suppresses the background by about 15\%.

Anomalous magnetic moment of the positronium ion

We determine the gyromagnetic factor of the positronium ion, a three-body system consisting of two electrons and a positron, including first relativistic corrections. We find that the g-factor is modified by a term -0.51(1)alpha^2, exceeding 15 times the alpha^2 correction for a free electron. We compare this effect with analogous results found previously in atomic positronium and in hydrogen-like ions.

Michel decay spectrum for a muon bound to a nucleus

The spectrum of electrons from muons decaying in an atomic bound state is significantly modified by their interaction with the nucleus. Somewhat unexpectedly, its first measurement, at the Canadian laboratory TRIUMF, differed from basic theory. We show, using a combination of techniques developed in atomic, nuclear, and high-energy physics, that radiative corrections eliminate the discrepancy. In addition to solving that outstanding problem, our more precise predictions are potentially useful for interpreting future high-statistics muon experiments that aim to search for exotic interactions at $10^{-16}$ sensitivity.

preprint2014arXiv

Muon decay spin asymmetry

We compute the spin asymmetry of the muon decay through O(alpha^2) in perturbative QED. These two-loop corrections are about a factor five (twenty) smaller than the current statistical (systematic) uncertainty of the most precise measurement, performed by the TWIST collaboration. We point out that at O(alpha^2) the asymmetry requires a careful definition due to multi-lepton final states and suggest to use familiar QCD techniques to define it in an infra-red safe way. We find that the TWIST measurement of the asymmetry is in excellent agreement with the Standard Model.

preprint2012arXiv

Binding energy of the positronium negative ion via dimensional scaling

We determine the binding energy of the negative positronium ion in the limits of one spatial dimension and of infinitely many dimensions. The numerical result for the one-dimensional ground state energy seems to be a rational number, suggesting the existence of an analytical solution for the wave function. We construct a perturbation expansion around the infinitely-dimensional limit to compute an accurate estimate for the physical three-dimensional case. That result for the energy agrees to five significant figures with variational studies.

Charged-Particle Decay at Finite Temperature

Radiative corrections to the decay rate of charged fermions caused by the presence of a thermal bath of photons are calculated in the limit when temperatures are below the masses of all charged particles involved. The cancellation of finite-temperature infrared divergences in the decay rate is described in detail. Temperature-dependent radiative corrections to a two-body decay of a hypothetical charged fermion and to electroweak decays of a muon are given. We touch upon possible implications of these results for charged particles in the early Universe.

Bounds on majoron emission from muon to electron conversion experiments

In models where lepton number is considered to be a spontaneously-broken global symmetry a massless Goldstone boson, the majoron (J), appears. We describe a procedure to explore the muon-electron-majoron coupling using the results from mu-e conversion search experiments. To accomplish that, we determine how the energy spectrum of the muon decay into an electron and a majoron is modified by binding effects in a muonic atom. We find that the future mu-to-e conversion experiments may be able to produce bounds on the mu->eJ rate which are comparable with the present ones from direct searches.

Muon decay in orbit: spectrum of high-energy electrons

Experimental searches for lepton-flavor-violating coherent muon-to-electron conversion in the field of a nucleus, have been proposed to reach the unprecedented sensitivity of 10^(-16) - 10^(-18) per stopped muon. At that level, they probe new interactions at effective-mass scales well beyond 1000 TeV. However, they must contend with background from ordinary bound muon decay. To better understand the background-spectrum shape and rate, we have carried out a detailed analysis of Coulombic-bound-state muon decay, including nuclear recoil. Implications for future experiments are briefly discussed.

Photon-photon scattering: a tutorial

Long-established results for the low-energy photon-photon scattering, gamma gamma --> gamma gamma, have recently been questioned. We analyze that claim and demonstrate that it is inconsistent with experience. We demonstrate that the mistake originates from an erroneous manipulation of divergent integrals and discuss the connection with another recent claim about the Higgs decay into two photons. We show a simple way of correctly computing the low-energy gamma gamma scattering.

Magnetic moment of a bound electron

Theoretical predictions underlying determinations of the fine structure constant alpha and the electron-to-proton mass ratio m_e/m_p are reviewed, with the emphasis on the bound electron magnetic anomaly g-2. The theory of the interaction of hydrogen-like ions with a magnetic field is discussed. The status of efforts aimed at the determination of O(alpha (Z alpha)^5) and O(alpha^2 (Z alpha)^5) corrections to the g factor is presented. The reevaluation of analogous corrections to the Lamb shift and the hyperfine splitting is summarized.

preprint2010arXiv

Radiative-nonrecoil corrections of order alpha^2 (Z alpha)^5 to the Lamb shift

We present results for the corrections of order alpha^2 (Z alpha)^5 to the Lamb shift. We compute all the contributing Feynman diagrams in dimensional regularization and a general covariant gauge using a mixture of analytical and numerical methods. We confirm results obtained by other groups and improve their precision. Values of the 32 master integrals for this and similar problems are provided.

Dipole Excitation of Dipositronium

The energy interval between the ground and the P-wave excited states of the recently discovered positronium molecule Ps_2 is evaluated, including the relativistic and the leading logarithmic radiative corrections, E_P-E_S = 0.181 586 7(8) a.u. The P-state, decaying usually via annihilation, is found to decay into the ground state by an electric dipole transition 19 percent of the time. Anticipated observation of this transition will provide insight into this exotic system.

Refinements in electroweak contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

Effects of strong interactions on the two loop electroweak radiative corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ=(g_μ-2)/2$, are examined. Short-distance logs are shown to be unaffected. Computation of long-distance contributions is improved by use of an effective field theory approach that preserves the chiral properties of QCD and accounts for constraints from the operator product expansion. Small, previously neglected, two loop contributions, suppressed by a $1-4\sin^2θ_W$ factor, are computed and the complete three loop leading short-distance logs are reevaluated. These refinements lead to a reduction in uncertainties and a slight shift in the total electroweak contribution to $a_μ^{\rm EW} = 154(1)(2)\times 10^{-11}$ where the first error corresponds to hadronic uncertainties and the second is primarily due to the allowed Higgs mass range.

Precision Measurements and CKM Unitarity

Determinations of $\vud$ and $\vus$ along with their implications for the unitarity test $\vud^2+\vus^2+\vub^2=1$ are discussed. The leading two loop radiative corrections to neutron $β$-decay are evaluated and used to derive a refined relationship $\vud^2 τ_n (1+3g_A^2)=4908(4)$sec. Employing $\vud =0.9740(5)$ from superallowed nuclear decays and the measured neutron lifetime $τ_n = 885.7(7)$sec, leads to the precise prediction $g_A=1.2703(8)$ which is compared with current direct experimental values. Various extractions of $\vus$ are described and updated. The long accepted Particle Data Group value of $\vus$ from fitted $K_{e3}$ decay rates suggests a deviation from CKM unitarity but it is contradicted by more recent experimental results which confirm unitarity with good precision. An outlook for possible future advances is given.

Three-loop QCD corrections and b-quark decays

We present three-loop (NNNLO) corrections to the heavy-to-heavy quark transitions in the limit of equal initial and final quark masses. In analogy with the previously found NNLO corrections, the bulk of the result is due to the beta_0^2 alpha_s^3 corrections. The remaining genuine three-loop effects for the semileptonic b --> c decays are estimated to increase the decay amplitude by 0.2(2)%. The perturbative series for the heavy-heavy axial current converges very well.

Semileptonic b --> u decays: lepton invariant mass spectrum

We compute O(alpha_s^2) QCD corrections to the lepton invariant mass spectrum in the decay b --> u l nu_l, relevant for the determination of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}|. Our method can also be used to evaluate moments of the lepton energy distribution with an O(alpha_s^2) accuracy. The abelian part of our result gives the neutrino invariant mass spectrum in the muon decay and, upon integration, the O(alpha^2) correction to the muon lifetime.

preprint1998arXiv

Two-loop QCD corrections to semileptonic b decays at an intermediate recoil

We present complete O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the decay b-->c+l+nu at the point where the invariant mass of the leptons sqrt{q^2} equals the c quark mass. We use this result, together with previously obtained corrections at the ends of the q^2 spectrum, to estimate the total width of the semileptonic b-->c decay with O(alpha_s^2) accuracy, essential for the |V_{cb}| determination.

preprint1997arXiv

Complete O(alpha_s^2) Corrections to Zero-Recoil Sum Rules for B-->D* Transitions

We present the complete O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the unit operator in the zero-recoil sum rule for the B-->D* transition. We include both perturbative and power-suppressed nonperturbative effects in a manner consistent with the operator product expansion. The impact of these corrections on |V_cb| extracted from semileptonic B-->D* decays near zero recoil is discussed. The mixing of the heavy quark kinetic operator with the unit operator at the two loop level is obtained. O(alpha_s) corrections to a number of power-suppressed operators are calculated.

Techniques for computing two-loop QCD corrections to b-->c transitions

We have recently presented the complete O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the semileptonic decay width of the b quark at maximal recoil. Here we discuss various technical aspects of that calculation and further applications of similar methods. In particular, we describe an expansion which facilitates the phase space integrations and the treatment of the mixed real-virtual corrections, for which Taylor expansion does not work and the so-called eikonal expansion must be employed. Several terms of the expansion are given for the O(alpha_s^2) QCD corrections to the differential semileptonic decay width of the b --quark at maximal recoil. We also demonstrate how the light quark loop corrections to the top quark decay rate can be obtained using the same methods. We briefly discuss the application of these techniques to the calculation of the O(alpha_s^2) correction to zero recoil sum rules for heavy flavor transitions.

preprint1997arXiv

Two-loop QCD corrections to semileptonic b decays at maximal recoil

We present a complete $O(α_s^2)$ correction to the differential width of the inclusive semileptonic decay $b\to clν_l$ at the kinematical point of vanishing invariant mass of the leptons, $q^2=0$. Together with the recently computed $O(α_s^2)$ correction at the upper boundary of the lepton invariant mass spectrum, this new information permits an estimate of the $O(α_s^2)$ effect in the total inclusive semileptonic decay width $b\to clν_l$. We argue that the non-BLM part of the $O(α_s^2)$ correction gives at most 1% correction to the inclusive semileptonic decay width $b\to clν_l$. This significantly improves the credibility of extracting $|V_{cb}|$ from the inclusive semileptonic decays of the b-hadrons.

Computing Techniques for Two-Loop Corrections to Anomalous Magnetic Moments of Leptons

Two-loop electroweak corrections to the electron, muon, and tau lepton anomalous magnetic moments have been computed recently. Effects of hadronic contributions to the photon propagator in two-loop QED corrections have also been reanalysed. The common technique used in both calculations was asymptotic expansion of Feynman diagrams in the ratio of lepton mass to some heavy mass scale. In this talk we present some details of this method paying particular attention to the expansion of multi-scale diagrams.

preprint1996arXiv

Electroweak corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

The bosonic two-loop electroweak radiative corrections to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ\equiv (g_μ-2)/2$, are presented. We find $Δa_μ^{\rm EW}({\rm 2\,loop\, bosonic})/ a_μ^{\rm EW}({\rm 1\,loop})\approx {α\over π}\left(-3.6 \ln\left({M_W^2\over m_μ^2}\right) +0.10 \right)\approx -0.11$ for $M_{\rm Higgs}\approx 250$ GeV. Combining that result with our previous two-loop fermionic calculation, we obtain an overall 22.6\% reduction in $a_μ^{\rm EW}$ from $195\times 10^{-11}$ to $151(4)\times 10^{-11}$. Implications for the full standard model prediction and an upcoming high precision measurement of $a_μ$ are briefly discussed. We also give the two-loop electroweak corrections to the anomalous magnetic moments of electron and tau lepton; they result in a reduction of the one-loop estimates by 35\% and 15\%, respectively.

preprint1996arXiv

Two-loop QCD corrections to $b\to c$ transitions at zero recoil

Complete two-loop QCD corrections to $b\to c$ transitions are presented in the limit of zero recoil. Vector and axial-vector coefficients $η_{A,V}$ are calculated analytically in the limit of equal beauty and charm masses, and a series appoximation is obtained for the general mass case. $η_A$ is crucial for the determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{cb}$. The two-loop effects enhance the one-loop corrections by 21\%, removing a major theoretical uncertainty in the value of $|V_{cb}|$. Including two-loop QCD effects and previously neglected electroweak and Coulomb corrections we find $|V_{cb}| = 0.0379 \pm 0.0020({\rm stat}) \pm 0.0025({\rm syst}) \pm 0.0011({\rm theory})$.

Electroweak Fermion-loop Contributions to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment

The two-loop electroweak corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, generated by fermionic loops, are calculated. An interesting role of the top quark in the anomaly cancellation is observed. New corrections, including terms of order $G_μαm_t^2$, are computed and a class of diagrams previously thought to vanish are found to be important. The total fermionic correction is $-(23\pm 3) \times 10^{-11}$ which decreases the electroweak effects on $g-2$, predicted from one-loop calculations, by 12\%. We give an updated theoretical prediction for $g-2$ of the muon.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections To Polarized Møller Scattering Asymmetries

One loop electroweak radiative corrections to left-right parity violating Møller scattering ($e^-e^-\to e^-e^-$) asymmetries are presented. They reduce the standard model (tree level) prediction by 40$\pm 3$ \% where the main shift and uncertainty stem from hadronic vacuum polarization loops. A similar reduction also occurs for the electron-electron atomic parity violating interaction. That effect can be attributed to an increase of $\sin^2θ_W(q^2)$ by $3\%$ in running from $q^2=m_Z^2$ to 0. The sensitivity of the asymmetry to ``new physics'' is also discussed.

Recent Results on QCD Corrections to Semileptonic $b$-Decays

We summarize recent results on QCD corrections to various observables in semileptonic $b$ quark decays. For massless leptons in the final state we present effects of such corrections on triple differential distribution of leptons which are important in studies of polarized $b$ quark decays. Analogous formulas for distributions of neutrinos are applicable in decays of polarized $c$ quarks. In the case of decays with a $τ$ lepton in the final state mass effect of $τ$ has to be included. In this case we concentrate on corrections to the total decay width.

preprint1994arXiv

Radiative corrections to $b\to cτ\batν_τ$

Analytical calculation is presented of the QCD radiative corrections to the rate of the process $b\to cτ\barν_τ$ and to the $τ$ lepton longitudinal polarization in $τ\barν_τ$ rest frame. The results are given in the form of one dimensional infrared finite integrals over the invariant mass of the leptons. We argue that this form may be optimal for phenomelogical applications due to a possible breakdown of semilocal hadron-parton duality in decays of heavy flavours.

Two-loop renormalization group analysis of hadronic decays of a charged Higgs boson

We calculate next-to-leading QCD corrections to the decay $H^+ \to u\bar d$ for generic up and down quarks in the final state. A recently developed algorithm for evaluation of massive two-loop Feynman diagrams is employed to calculate renormalization constants of the charged Higgs boson. The origin and summation of large logarithmic corrections to the decay rate of the top quark into a lighter charged Higgs boson is also explained.
