Endpoint factorization and next-to-leading power resummation of gluon thrust

Endpoint divergences in the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power factorization theorems prevent a straightforward application of standard methods to resum large logarithmic power-suppressed corrections in collider physics. We study the power-suppressed configuration of the thrust distribution in the two-jet region, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair. With the aid of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we derive a factorization formula where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences and can be written in terms of renormalized hard, (anti) collinear, and soft functions in four dimensions. This framework enables us to perform the first resummation of the endpoint-divergent SCET$_{\rm I}$ observables at the leading logarithmic accuracy using exclusively renormalization-group methods.

Gravitational soft theorem from emergent soft gauge symmetries

We consider and derive the gravitational soft theorem up to the sub-subleading power from the perspective of effective Lagrangians. The emergent soft gauge symmetries of the effective Lagrangian provide a transparent explanation of why soft graviton emission is universal to sub-subleading power, but gauge boson emission is not. They also suggest a physical interpretation of the form of the soft factors in terms of the charges related to the soft transformations and the kinematics of the multipole expansion. The derivation is done directly at Lagrangian level, resulting in an operatorial form of the soft theorems. In order to highlight the differences and similarities of the gauge-theory and gravitational soft theorems, we include an extensive discussion of soft gauge-boson emission from scalar, fermionic and vector matter at subleading power.

Isotope dependence of muon decay in orbit

The decay $μ^-\to e^- \barν_eν_μ$ of a muon that is bound to a nucleus poses an unavoidable background for experiments such as Mu2e, COMET, and DeeMe searching for lepton-flavor-violating $μ^-\to e^-$ conversion and thus requires a precise understanding. We calculate the electron-energy spectra of muon decays in orbit near the electron energy endpoint for all stable isotopes and estimate uncertainties due to the nuclear charge distribution. Our results enable background studies of mixed or enriched target materials that are necessary for the next generation of $μ^-\to e^-$ conversion experiments.

Isotope dependence of muon-to-electron conversion

The lepton-flavor-violating conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of a nucleus is one of the most sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model and the experiments Mu2e, COMET, and DeeMe will explore uncharted terrain in the near future. An observation of this $μ^-\to e^-$ conversion process opens up the possibility to distinguish the underlying operator or new-physics model by exploiting the target-nucleus dependence of the conversion rate. To facilitate the choice of optimal targets we provide $μ^-\to e^-$ conversion rates for all stable isotopes and estimate nuclear-structure uncertainties. Our results enable studies of mixed or enriched target materials that are particularly promising for distinguishing scenarios in which the muon converts either on protons or neutrons.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Resummation for future colliders

Resummation techniques are essential for high-precision phenomenology at current and future high-energy collider experiments. Perturbative computations of cross sections often suffer from large logarithmic corrections, which must be resummed to all orders to restore the reliability of predictions from first principles. The precise understanding of the all-order structure of field theories allows for fundamental tests of the Standard Model and new physics searches. In this white paper, we review recent progress in modern resummation techniques and outline future directions. In particular, we focus on the resummation beyond leading power, the joint resummation of different classes of logarithms relevant for jets and their substructure, small-$x$ resummation in the high-energy regime and the QCD fragmentation process in the small-$z_h$ limit.

Snowmass White Paper: Effective Field Theories for Dark Matter Phenomenology

The quest to discover the nature of dark matter continues to drive many of the experimental and observational frontiers in particle physics, astronomy, and cosmology. While there are no definitive signatures to date, there exists a rich ecosystem of experiments searching for signals for a broad class of dark matter models, at different epochs of cosmic history, and through a variety of processes with different characteristic energy scales. Given the multitude of candidates and search strategies, effective field theory has been an important tool for parametrizing the possible interactions between dark matter and Standard Model probes, for quantifying and improving model-independent uncertainties, and for robust estimation of detection rates in the presence of large perturbative corrections. This white paper summarizes a wide range of effective field theory applications for connecting dark matter theories to experiments.

Soft-collinear gravity beyond the leading power

We construct "soft-collinear gravity", the effective field theory which describes the interaction of collinear and soft gravitons with matter (and themselves), to all orders in the soft-collinear power expansion. Despite the absence of collinear divergences in gravity at leading power, the construction exhibits remarkable similarities with soft-collinear effective theory of QCD (gauge fields). It reveals an emergent soft background gauge symmetry, which allows for a manifestly gauge-invariant representation of the interactions in terms of a soft covariant derivative, the soft Riemann tensor, and a covariant generalisation of the collinear light-cone gauge metric field. The gauge symmetries control both the unsuppressed collinear field components and the inherent inhomogeneity in $λ$ of the invariant objects to all orders, resulting in a consistent expansion.

The analytic two-loop soft function for leading-jet $p_T$

We present the calculation of the two-loop soft function for the transverse momentum distribution of the leading jet produced in association with any colour-singlet system (e.g.~a Higgs or a $Z$ boson). This constitutes a central ingredient for the resummation of the above distribution as well as the jet-vetoed cross section at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, both of which play an important role in the precision physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider. The calculation is performed in soft-collinear effective theory with an appropriate regularisation of the rapidity divergences that occur in the phase-space integrals. We obtain analytic results by employing an exponential regulator and by taking a Laurent expansion in the jet radius $R$. All expressions are presented as ancillary files with this article.

Leading-logarithmic threshold resummation of Higgs production in gluon fusion at next-to-leading power

We sum the leading logarithms $α_s^n \ln^{2 n-1}(1-z)$, n=1,2,... near the kinematic threshold $z=m_H^2/\hat{s}\to 1$ at next-to-leading power in the expansion in (1-z) for Higgs production in gluon fusion. We highlight the new contributions compared to Drell-Yan production in quark-antiquark annihilation and show that the final result can be obtained to all orders by the substitution of the colour factor $C_F\to C_A$, confirming previous fixed-order results and conjectures. We also provide a numerical analysis of the next-to-leading power leading logarithms, which indicates that they are numerically relevant.

Bound muon decay spectrum in the leading logarithmic accuracy

We compute the dominant, logarithmically enhanced radiative corrections to the electron spectrum in the bound muon decay in the whole experimentally interesting range. The corrected spectrum fits well the TWIST results. The remaining theoretical error, dominated by the nuclear charge distribution, can be reduced in the muon-electron conversion searches by measuring the spectrum slightly below the New Physics signal window.

Lepton Number Violation and `Diracness' of massive neutrinos composed of Majorana states

Majorana neutrinos naturally lead to a Lepton Number Violation (LNV). A superposition of Majorana states can mimic Dirac-type neutrinos, leading to its conservation (LNC). We demonstrate on the example of specific observables related to high and low energy processes how a strength of LNV correlates with neutrino parameters such as CP-phases, flavor mixings, mass ratios. We stress the coaction between low and high energy studies for putting phenomenological models to a quantitative test. Secondly, we conclude that in order to fully study the role of heavy neutrinos in search for New Physics (NP) signals, a departure from trivial scenarios assuming degeneracy in mass and no flavor mixing or CP-phases becomes necessary for a proper physical analysis.

Light-by-light scattering in the Lamb shift and the bound electron g factor

We compute an $\mathcal{O}\left(α^2(Zα)^6\right)$ contribution to the hydrogen-atom Lamb shift arising from the light-by-light scattering. Analogous diagrams, with one atomic electric field insertion replaced by an external magnetic field, contribute to the gyromagnetic factor of the bound electron at $\mathcal{O}\left(α^2(Zα)^4\right)$. We also calculate the contribution to the gyromagnetic factor from the muon magnetic loop.

High-energy electrons from the muon decay in orbit: radiative corrections

We determine the $\mathcal{O}(α)$ correction to the energy spectrum of electrons produced in the decay of muons bound in atoms. We focus on the high-energy end of the spectrum that constitutes a background for the muon-electron conversion and will be precisely measured by the upcoming experiments Mu2e and COMET. The correction suppresses the background by about 15\%.

Michel decay spectrum for a muon bound to a nucleus

The spectrum of electrons from muons decaying in an atomic bound state is significantly modified by their interaction with the nucleus. Somewhat unexpectedly, its first measurement, at the Canadian laboratory TRIUMF, differed from basic theory. We show, using a combination of techniques developed in atomic, nuclear, and high-energy physics, that radiative corrections eliminate the discrepancy. In addition to solving that outstanding problem, our more precise predictions are potentially useful for interpreting future high-statistics muon experiments that aim to search for exotic interactions at $10^{-16}$ sensitivity.

Muon decay spin asymmetry

We compute the spin asymmetry of the muon decay through O(alpha^2) in perturbative QED. These two-loop corrections are about a factor five (twenty) smaller than the current statistical (systematic) uncertainty of the most precise measurement, performed by the TWIST collaboration. We point out that at O(alpha^2) the asymmetry requires a careful definition due to multi-lepton final states and suggest to use familiar QCD techniques to define it in an infra-red safe way. We find that the TWIST measurement of the asymmetry is in excellent agreement with the Standard Model.

Oscillation of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos from muon decay in the case of a general interaction

We analyse the possibility of distinguishing Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in future neutrino factory experiments in which neutrinos are produced in muon decay when, in addition to a vector type as in the SM, there are also scalar interactions. We check this possibility in an experiment with a near detector, where the observed neutrinos do not oscillate, and in a far detector, after the neutrino oscillations. Neglecting higher-order corrections, even neutrino observation in the near detector does not give a chance to differentiate their character. However, this possibility appears in the leading-order after the neutrino oscillations observed in far detector.

Real and complex random neutrino mass matrices and theta13

Recently it has been shown that one of the basic parameters of the neutrino sector, so called theta13 angle is very small, but quite probably non-zero. We argue that the small value of theta13 can still be reproduced easily by a wide spectrum of randomly generated models of neutrino masses. For that we consider real and complex neutrino mass matrices, also including sterile neutrinos. A qualitative difference between results for real and complex mass matrices in the region of small theta13 values is observed. We show that statistically the present experimental data prefers random models of neutrino masses with sterile neutrinos.

rho^0-gamma mixing in the neutral channel pion form factor |F_pi|^2 and its role in comparing e^+ e^- with tau spectral functions

We study the effect of rho^0-gamma mixing in e^+e^- to pi^+pi^- and its relevance for the comparison of the square modulus of the pion from-factor |F^(e)_pi|^2, as measured in e^+e^- annihilation experiments, and |F^(tau)_pi|^2 the corresponding quantity obtained after accounting for known isospin breaking effects by an isospin rotation from the tau-decay spectra. After correcting the tau data for the missing rho-gamma mixing contribution, besides the other known isospin symmetry violating corrections, the pi pi I=1 part of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g-2 are fully compatible between tau based and e^+e^- based evaluations. tau data thus confirm result obtained with e^+e^- data. Our evaluation based on all e^+e^- data including more recent BaBar and KLOE data yields a_mu^(had)=690.75(4.72) x 10^{-10} (e^+e^- based), while including tau data we find a_mu^(had)=690.96(4.65) X 10^{-10} (e^+e^-+tau based). This backs the ~3 sigma deviation between theory and experiment. For the tau di-pion branching fraction we find B^{CVC}_{pi pi^0}=25.20 \pm0.0.17\pm0.28 from e^+e^-+CVC, while B_{pi pi^0}=25.34\pm0.0.06\pm0.08 is evaluated directly from the tau spectra.

Neutrino production states and NSI

The problems of neutrino production states, prepared to the oscillation process, in the case of non standard interactions, are briefly discussed. Quantum neutrino states are determined from the dynamics of a production process. We show, that even in models where only left-handed neutrinos are introduced, the standard adopted procedure is valid only approximately. Entanglement between neutrino masses or between masses, flavour and spins cause, that their quantum states are mixed.
