Integrated subtraction terms and finite remainders for arbitrary processes with massless partons at colliders in the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme

We present integrated subtraction terms and finite remainders for arbitrary processes with massless partons at hadron and lepton colliders in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme. These results provide the very last ingredients needed to make this scheme a fully local, analytic and process-independent framework for treating infrared singularities at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The explicit infrared finiteness of all required contributions, as well as their process-independence, puts these results on par with subtraction schemes developed for next-to-leading order computations and opens up a clear path towards the automation of next-to-next-to-leading order computations in QCD.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to dilepton production at the LHC in the high invariant mass region

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan production of a pair of massless leptons in the high invariant mass region. Our computation is fully differential with respect to the final state particles. At relatively low values of the dilepton invariant mass, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 200$ GeV, we find unexpectedly large mixed QCD-electroweak corrections at the level of -1%. At higher invariant masses, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 1$ TeV, we observe that these corrections can be well approximated by the product of QCD and electroweak corrections. Hence, thanks to the well-known Sudakov enhancement of the latter, they increase at large invariant mass and reach e.g. -3% at $m_{\ell \ell} = 3$ TeV. Finally, we note that the inclusion of mixed corrections reduces the theoretical uncertainty related to the choice of electroweak input parameters to below the percent level.

Non-factorisable contribution to $t$-channel single-top production

We compute the non-factorisable ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$ corrections to $t$-channel single-top quark production at the LHC. These peculiar corrections arise because of interactions between the heavy- and the light-quark lines and appear for the very first time at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We find that the non-factorisable corrections change the single-top production cross section and the relevant kinematic distributions in this process by about half a percent.

On linear power corrections in certain collider observables

We study linear power corrections ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}/Q)$ to certain collider observables. We present arguments that prove that such corrections cannot appear in observables that are inclusive with respect to QCD radiation, such as total cross sections as well as rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of color-neutral particles. Although our calculations are carried out in a simplified framework, our arguments and conclusions are applicable, with some reservations, to processes both at lepton and hadron colliders. We also show how an improved understanding of the origin of linear power corrections allows us to simplify their calculation. As an application, we compute the leading non-perturbative corrections to the $C$-parameter and the thrust in $e^+e^-$ annihilation in a generic three-jet configuration.

Anomalous couplings in associated $VH$ production with Higgs decay to massive $b$ quarks at NNLO in QCD

We combine the NNLO QCD description of Higgs boson production in association with an electroweak vector boson $V = W~{\rm or}~Z$ with a similarly-precise description of Higgs boson decays into a pair of massive $b$ quarks and with the anomalous couplings that modify interactions of the Higgs and electroweak vector bosons. The resulting numerical code provides the most advanced theoretical tool to investigate such anomalous couplings in the associated Higgs boson production process. We study the impact of anomalous couplings on fiducial cross sections and differential distributions and argue that, with increased QCD precision, smaller anomalous couplings become accessible in kinematic regions where the effects of higher-dimensional operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory remain small and the EFT expansion is under control.

NNLO QCD corrections to weak boson fusion Higgs boson production in the $H \to b\bar b$ and $H \to WW^* \to 4l$ decay channels

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to Higgs boson production in weak boson fusion followed by its decay to a $b\bar b$ pair or to a pair of leptonically-decaying $W$ bosons. Our calculation allows us to compute realistic fiducial cross sections and assess the impact of fiducial cuts applied to the Higgs boson decay products on the magnitude of QCD radiative corrections in weak boson fusion.

On phase-space integrals with Heaviside functions

We discuss peculiarities that arise in the computation of real-emission contributions to observables that contain Heaviside functions. A prominent example of such a case is the zero-jettiness soft function in SCET, whose calculation at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD is an interesting problem. Since the zero-jettiness soft function distinguishes between emissions into different hemispheres, its definition involves $θ$-functions of light-cone components of emitted soft partons. This prevents a direct use of multi-loop methods, based on reverse unitarity, for computing the zero-jettiness soft function in high orders of perturbation theory. We propose a way to bypass this problem and illustrate its effectiveness by computing various non-trivial contrbutions to the zero-jettiness soft function at NNLO and N3LO in perturbative QCD.

Bottom quark mass effects in associated $WH$ production with $H \to b\bar{b}$ decay through NNLO QCD

We present a computation of NNLO QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson in association with a $W$ boson at the LHC followed by the decay of the Higgs boson to a $b\bar{b}$ pair. At variance with previous NNLO QCD studies of the same process, we treat $b$ quarks as massive. An important advantage of working with massive $b$ quarks is that it makes the use of flavor jet algorithms unnecessary and allows us to employ conventional jet algorithms to define $b$ jets. We compare NNLO QCD descriptions of the associated $WH(b\bar{b})$ production with massive and massless $b$ quarks and also contrast them with the results provided by parton showers. We find ${\cal O}(5\%)$ differences in fiducial cross sections computed with massless and massive $b$ quarks. We also observe that much larger differences between massless and massive results, as well as between fixed-order and parton-shower results, can arise in selected kinematic distributions.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to W-boson production in hadron collisions

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the fully-differential production of an on-shell $W$ boson. Decays of $W$ bosons to lepton pairs are included in the leading order approximation. The required two-loop virtual corrections are computed analytically for arbitrary values of the electroweak gauge boson masses. Analytic results for integrated subtraction terms are obtained within a soft-collinear subtraction scheme optimized to accommodate the structural simplicity of infra-red singularities of mixed QCD-electroweak contributions. Numerical results for mixed corrections to the fiducial cross section of $pp \to W^+ \to l^+ ν$ and selected kinematic distributions in this process are presented.

Analytic results for deep-inelastic scattering at NNLO QCD with the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme

We present analytic results that describe fully-differential NNLO QCD corrections to deep-inelastic scattering processes within the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme. This is the last building block required for the application of this scheme to computations of NNLO QCD corrections to arbitrary processes at hadron colliders.

Mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections to on-shell $Z$ boson production at the LHC

We compute the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections to the production of on-shell $Z$ bosons at the LHC at a fully-exclusive level. We also include the factorised NLO QCD correction to $Z$ boson production and NLO QED correction to $Z$ boson decay into two leptons. We make use of an abelianised version of the nested soft-collinear subtraction formalism to perform this computation. We study the phenomenological impact of the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections for a number of observables relevant for LHC phenomenology.

Quark beam function at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD in the generalized large-$N_c$ approximation

We present the matching coefficient for the quark beam function at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD in the generalized large $N_c$-approximation, $N_c \sim N_f \gg 1$. Although several refinements are still needed to make this result interesting for phenomenological applications, our computation shows that a fully-differential description of simple color singlet production processes at a hadron collider at N$^3$LO in perturbative QCD is within reach.

Higgs boson decay to two photons and the dispersion relations

We discuss the computation of the Higgs boson decay amplitude to two photons through the W-loop using dispersion relations. The imaginary part of the form factor F_W(s) that parametrizes this decay is unambiguous in four dimensions. When it is used to calculate the unsubtracted dispersion integral, the finite result for the form factor F_W(s) is obtained. However, the F_W(s) obtained in this way differs by a constant term from the result of a diagrammatic computation, based on dimensional regularization. It is easy to accommodate the missing constant by writing a once-subtracted dispersion relation for F_W(s) but it is unclear why the subtraction needs to be done. The goal of this paper is to investigate this question in detail. We show that the correct constant can be recovered within a dispersive approach in a number of ways that, however, either require an introduction of an ultraviolet regulator or unphysical degrees of freedom; unregulated and unsubtracted computations in the unitary gauge are insufficient, in spite of the fact that such computations give a finite result.

On the light quark mass effects in Higgs boson production in gluon fusion

Production of Higgs bosons at the LHC is affected by the contribution of light quarks, that mediate the gg \to Hg transition. Although their impact is suppressed by small Yukawa couplings, it is enhanced by large logarithms of the ratio of the Higgs boson mass or its transverse momentum to light quark masses. We study the origin of this enhancement, focusing on the abelian corrections to gg \to Hg amplitudes of the form (C_F alphas L^{2})^n, where $L \in { ln(s/mb^2), ln(p_\perp^2/mb^2) }. We show how these non-Sudakov double logarithmic terms can be resummed to all orders in the strong coupling constant. Interestingly, we find that the transverse momentum dependence of these corrections is very weak due to a peculiar cancellation between different logarithmic terms. Although the abelian part of QCD corrections is not expected to be dominant, it can be used to estimate missing higher-order corrections to light quark contributions to Higgs boson production at the LHC.

QCD corrections to vector boson pair production in gluon fusion including interference effects with off-shell Higgs at the LHC

We compute next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production of two massive electroweak bosons in gluon fusion. We consider both the prompt production process $gg \to VV$ and the production mediated by an exchange of an s-channel Higgs boson, $gg \to H^* \to V V$. We include final states with both on- and off-shell vector bosons with leptonic decays. The gluonic production of vector bosons is a loop-induced process, including both massless and massive quarks in the loop. For $gg \to ZZ$ production, we obtain the NLO QCD corrections to the massive loops through an expansion around the heavy top limit. This approximation is valid below the top production threshold, giving a broad range of invariant masses between the Higgs production and the top production thresholds in which our results are valid. We explore the NLO QCD effects in $gg \to ZZ$ focusing, in particular, on the interference between prompt and Higgs-mediated processes. We find that the QCD corrections to the interference are large and similar in size to the corrections to both the signal and the background processes. At the same time, we observe that corrections to the interference change rapidly with the four-lepton invariant mass in the region around the ZZ production threshold. We also study the interference effects in $gg \to WW$ production where, due to technical limitations, we only consider contributions of massless loops. We find that the QCD corrections to the interference in this case are somewhat larger than those for either the signal or the background.

Two-loop $gg \to Hg$ amplitude mediated by a nearly massless quark

We analytically compute the two-loop scattering amplitude $gg \to Hg$ assuming that the mass of the quark, that mediates the ggH interaction, is vanishingly small. Our computation provides an important ingredient required to improve the theoretical description of the top-bottom interference effect in Higgs boson production in gluon fusion, and to elucidate its impact on the Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution.

Fiducial cross sections for Higgs boson production in association with a jet at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

We extend the recent computation of Higgs boson production in association with a jet through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD by including decays of the Higgs boson to electroweak vector bosons. This allows us to compute fiducial cross sections and kinematic distributions including realistic selection criteria for the Higgs boson decay products. As an illustration, we present results for $pp \to H + j \to γγ+ j$ closely following the ATLAS 8 TeV analysis and for $pp \to H+ j \to W W + j \to e^+ μ^- ν\bar ν+ j $ in a CMS-like 13 TeV setup.

Higgs boson production in association with a jet at next-to-next-to-leading order

We present precise predictions for Higgs boson production in association with a jet. Our calculation is accurate to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD in the Higgs Effective Field Theory and constitutes the first complete NNLO computation for Higgs production with a final-state jet in hadronic collisions. We include all relevant phenomenological channels and present fully-differential results as well as total cross sections for the LHC. Our NNLO predictions reduce the unphysical scale dependence by more than a factor of two and enhance the total rate by about twenty percent compared to NLO QCD predictions. Our results demonstrate for the first time satisfactory convergence of the perturbative series.

Non-planar master integrals for the production of two off-shell vector bosons in collisions of massless partons

We present the calculation of all non-planar master integrals that are needed to describe production of two off-shell vector bosons in collisions of two massless partons through NNLO in perturbative QCD. The integrals are computed analytically using differential equations in external kinematic variables and expressed in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. These results provide the last missing ingredient needed for the computation of two-loop amplitudes that describe the production of two gauge bosons with different invariant masses in hadron collisions.

Production of two Z-bosons in gluon fusion in the heavy top quark approximation

We compute QCD radiative corrections to the continuum production of a pair of Z-bosons in the annihilation of two gluons. We only consider the contribution of the top quark loops and we treat them assuming that $m_t$ is much larger than any other kinematic invariant in the problem. We estimate the QCD corrections to $pp \to ZZ$ using the first non-trivial term in the expansion in the inverse top quark mass and we compare them to QCD corrections of the signal process, $pp \to H \to ZZ$.

QCD corrections to $W^+W^-$ production through gluon fusion

We compute the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the $gg \to W^+ W^- \to l^+_1 ν_1 l^-_2 \bar ν_2$ process, mediated by a massless quark loop, at the LHC. This process first contributes to the hadroproduction of $W^+W^-$ at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$, but, nevertheless, has a sizable impact on the total production rate. We find that the NLO QCD corrections to the $gg \to W^+W^-$ process amount to ${\cal O}(50)$%, and increase the NNLO QCD cross sections of $pp \to W^+W^-$ by approximately two percent, at both the 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC. We also compute the NLO corrections to gluonic $W^+W^-$ production within a fiducial volume used by the ATLAS collaboration in their 8 TeV measurement of the $W^+W^-$ production rate and find that the QCD corrections are significantly smaller than in the inclusive case. While the current experimental uncertainties are still too large to make these differences relevant, the observed strong dependence of perturbative corrections on kinematic cuts underscores that extrapolation from a fiducial measurement to the total cross section is an extremely delicate matter, and calls for the direct comparison of fiducial volume measurements with corresponding theoretical computations.

QCD corrections to ZZ production in gluon fusion at the LHC

We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of two Z-bosons in the annihilation of two gluons at the LHC. Being enhanced by a large gluon flux, these corrections provide distinct and, potentially, the dominant part of the N$^3$LO QCD contributions to Z-pair production in proton collisions. The $gg \to ZZ$ annihilation is a loop-induced process that receives the dominant contribution from loops of five light quarks, that are included in our computation in the massless approximation. We find that QCD corrections increase the $gg \to ZZ$ production cross section by ${\cal O}(50\%-100\%)$ depending on the values of the renormalization and factorization scales used in the leading order computation, and the collider energy. The large corrections to $gg \to ZZ$ channel increase the $pp \to ZZ$ cross section by about six to eight percent, exceeding the estimated theoretical uncertainty of the recent NNLO QCD calculation.

Two-loop helicity amplitudes for the production of two off-shell electroweak bosons in gluon fusion

We compute the part of the two-loop virtual amplitude for the process $gg \to V_1 V_2 \to (l_1 \bar l'_{1}) (l_2 \bar l'_2)$, where $V_{1,2}$ are arbitrary electroweak gauge bosons, that receives contributions from loops of massless quarks. Invariant masses of electroweak bosons are allowed to be different from each other. Our result provides an important ingredient for improving the description of gluon fusion contribution to the production of four-lepton final states at the LHC.

Two-loop helicity amplitudes for the production of two off-shell electroweak bosons in quark-antiquark collisions

Knowledge of two-loop QCD amplitudes for processes $q\bar q \to V_1 V_2 \to (l_1\bar l'_1)(l_2 \bar l'_2)$ is important for improving the theoretical description of four-lepton production in hadron collisions. In this paper we compute these helicity amplitudes for all intermediate vector bosons, $V_1 V_2 = γ^*γ^*, WW, ZZ, WZ, W γ^*$, including off-shell effects and decays to leptons.

Constraining anomalous HVV interactions at proton and lepton colliders

In this paper, we study the extent to which CP parity of a Higgs boson, and more generally its anomalous couplings to gauge bosons, can be measured at the LHC and a future electron-positron collider. We consider several processes, including Higgs boson production in gluon and weak boson fusion and production of a Higgs boson in association with an electroweak gauge boson. We consider decays of a Higgs boson including $ZZ, WW, γγ$, and $Z γ$. Matrix element approach to three production and decay topologies is developed and applied in the analysis. A complete Monte Carlo simulation of the above processes at proton and $e^+e^-$ colliders is performed and verified by comparing it to an analytic calculation. Prospects for measuring various tensor couplings at existing and proposed facilities are compared.

Muon decay spin asymmetry

We compute the spin asymmetry of the muon decay through O(alpha^2) in perturbative QED. These two-loop corrections are about a factor five (twenty) smaller than the current statistical (systematic) uncertainty of the most precise measurement, performed by the TWIST collaboration. We point out that at O(alpha^2) the asymmetry requires a careful definition due to multi-lepton final states and suggest to use familiar QCD techniques to define it in an infra-red safe way. We find that the TWIST measurement of the asymmetry is in excellent agreement with the Standard Model.

On the NNLO QCD corrections to single-top production at the LHC

We present a fully-differential calculation of the NNLO QCD corrections to the t-channel mechanism for producing single top quarks at the LHC. We work in the structure function approximation, computing QCD corrections to the light- and heavy-quark lines separately and neglecting the dynamical cross-talk between the two. The neglected contribution, which appears at NNLO for the first time, is color-suppressed and is expected to be sub-dominant. Within this approximation, we find that, for the total cross section, NNLO QCD corrections are in the few percent range and, therefore, are comparable to NLO QCD corrections. We also find that the scale independence of the theoretical prediction for single-top production improves significantly once NNLO QCD corrections are included. Furthermore, we show how these results change if a cut on the transverse momentum of the top quark is applied and derive the NNLO QCD prediction for the ratio of single top and single anti-top production cross sections at the 8 TeV LHC.

On the spin and parity of a single-produced resonance at the LHC

The experimental determination of the properties of the newly discovered boson at the Large Hadron Collider is currently the most crucial task in high energy physics. We show how information about the spin, parity, and, more generally, the tensor structure of the boson couplings can be obtained by studying angular and mass distributions of events in which the resonance decays to pairs of gauge bosons, $ZZ, WW$, and $γγ$. A complete Monte Carlo simulation of the process $pp \to X \to VV \to 4f$ is performed and verified by comparing it to an analytic calculation of the decay amplitudes $X \to VV \to 4f$. Our studies account for all spin correlations and include general couplings of a spin $J=0,1,2$ resonance to Standard Model particles. We also discuss how to use angular and mass distributions of the resonance decay products for optimal background rejection. It is shown that by the end of the 8 TeV run of the LHC, it might be possible to separate extreme hypotheses of the spin and parity of the new boson with a confidence level of 99% or better for a wide range of models. We briefly discuss the feasibility of testing scenarios where the resonances is not a parity eigenstate.

Remarks on the effect of bound states and threshold in g-2

Recently, the contribution of positronium bound states to the electron anomalous magnetic moment was computed in Refs.[1,2]. It was argued there that this O(alpha^5) contribution is missed if electron g-2 is calculated within conventional perturbative QED and, as such, it must be added to the perturbative five-loop result. We show that this conclusion is flawed and that no additional contributions to g-2 are generated in QED beyond the perturbation theory.

Two-loop planar master integrals for the production of off-shell vector bosons in hadron collisions

We describe the calculation of all planar master integrals that are needed for the computation of NNLO QCD corrections to the production of two off-shell vector bosons in hadron collisions. The most complicated representatives of integrals in this class are the two-loop four-point functions where two external lines are on the light-cone and two other external lines have different invariant masses. We compute these and other relevant integrals analytically using differential equations in external kinematic variables and express our results in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. The case of two equal off-shellnesses, recently considered in Ref. [1], appears as a particular case of our general solution.

Virtual corrections to Higgs boson pair production in the large top quark mass limit

We calculate the three-loop matching coefficient $C_{HH}$, required for a consistent description of Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion through next-to-next-to-leading order QCD in the heavy top quark approximation. We also compute the $gg \to HH$ amplitude in $m_t \to \infty$ approximation in the full theory and show its consistency with an earlier computation in heavy-top effective theory.

A complete next-to-leading order QCD description of resonant $Z'$ production and decay into $t\bar t$ final states

We discuss QCD radiative corrections to the production of a heavy neutral resonance $Z'$ at the LHC assuming that it decays into a $ t\bar t$ final state. Compared to previous studies, our computation includes top quark decays as well as interference between the $Z'$ signal process and the QCD $t \bar t$ background. The interference contribution appears for the first time at next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD and requires new one-loop amplitudes that are not present when signal and background are treated separately. We describe some examples of how QCD radiative corrections may influence both the exclusion limits and studies of properties of the new resonance, once it is discovered.

Constraining the Higgs boson width with ZZ production at the LHC

We point out that existing measurements of $pp \to ZZ$ cross-section at the LHC in a broad range of ZZ invariant masses allow one to derive a model-independent upper bound on the Higgs boson width, thanks to strongly enhanced off-shell Higgs contribution. Using CMS data and considering events in the interval of ZZ invariant masses from 100 to 800 GeV, we find $Γ_H \le 38.8 \times Γ_H^{SM} \approx 163$ MeV, at the $95\%$ confidence level. Restricting ZZ invariant masses to $M_{ZZ} \ge 300$ GeV range, we estimate that this bound can be improved to $Γ_H \le 21 \times Γ_H^{SM} \approx 88$ MeV. Under the assumption that all couplings of the Higgs boson to Standard Model particles scale in a universal way, our result can be translated into an upper limit on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to invisible final states. We obtain $Br(H \to inv) < 0.84 (0.78)$, depending on the range of ZZ invariant masses that are used to constrain the width. We believe that an analysis along these lines should be performed by experimental collaborations in the near future and also in the run II of the LHC. We estimate that such analyses can, eventually, be sensitive to the Higgs boson width as small as $Γ_H \sim 10 \times Γ_H^{SM}$.

Higgs boson production in association with a jet at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD

We report on a calculation of the cross-section for Higgs boson production in gluon fusion in association with a hadronic jet at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. The computational technique is discussed in detail. We show explicitly how to employ known soft and collinear limits of scattering amplitudes to construct subtraction terms for NNLO computations. Cancellation of singularities is demonstrated numerically for the collinearly-subtracted $gg \to H + j $ cross-section through NNLO and the finite $σ_{gg \to Hj}$ cross-section is computed through ${\cal O}(α_s^5)$ as a function of the center-of-mass collision energy. We present numerical results for the gluon-fusion contribution to Higgs production in association with a jet at the LHC. The NNLO QCD corrections significantly reduce the residual scale dependence of the cross-section. The computational method that we describe in this paper is applicable to the calculation of NNLO QCD corrections to any other $ 2 \to 2$ process at a hadron collider

On the $O(α_s^2)$ corrections to $b \to X_u e \bar ν$ inclusive decays

We present $O(α_s^2)$ QCD corrections to the fully-differential decay rate of a $b$-quark into inclusive semileptonic charmless final states. Our calculation provides genuine two-loop QCD corrections, beyond the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) approximation, to any infra-red safe partonic observable that can be probed in $b \to X_u e \bar ν$ decays. Kinematic cuts that closely match those used in experiments can be fully accounted for. To illustrate these points, we compute the non-BLM corrections to moments of the hadronic invariant mass and the hadronic energy with cuts on the lepton energy and the hadronic invariant mass. Our results remove one of the sources of theoretical uncertainty that affect the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ from charmless inclusive B-decays.

On the Higgs boson pair production at the LHC

We compute the production cross section of a pair of Standard Model Higgs bosons at the LHC at next-to-leading order in QCD, including corrections in inverse powers of the top quark mass. We calculate these power corrections through ${\cal O}(1/M_t^8)$ and study their relevance for phenomenology of the double Higgs production. We find that power corrections are significant, even for moderate values of partonic center-of-mass energies, and that convergence of the $1/M_t$ expansion can be dramatically improved by factorizing the leading order cross section with full $M_t$-dependence.

Signal-background interference effects for $gg \to H \to W^+ W^-$ beyond leading order

We study the effect of QCD corrections to the $gg\to H\to W^+ W^-$ signal-background interference at the LHC for a heavy Higgs boson. We construct a soft-collinear approximation to the NLO and NNLO corrections for the background process, which is exactly known only at LO. We estimate its accuracy by constructing and comparing the same approximation to the exact result for the signal process, which is known up to NNLO, and we conclude that we can describe the signal-background interference to better than ten percent accuracy. We show that our result implies that, in practice, a fairly good approximation to higher-order QCD corrections to the interference may also be obtained by rescaling the known LO result by a K-factor computed using the signal process.

Charged-Particle Decay at Finite Temperature

Radiative corrections to the decay rate of charged fermions caused by the presence of a thermal bath of photons are calculated in the limit when temperatures are below the masses of all charged particles involved. The cancellation of finite-temperature infrared divergences in the decay rate is described in detail. Temperature-dependent radiative corrections to a two-body decay of a hypothetical charged fermion and to electroweak decays of a muon are given. We touch upon possible implications of these results for charged particles in the early Universe.

Gluon fusion contribution to W+W- + jet production

We describe the computation of the $gg \to W^+W^-g$ process that contributes to the production of two $W$-bosons and a jet at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While formally of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD, this process can be evaluated separately from the bulk of NNLO QCD corrections because it is finite and gauge-invariant. It is also enhanced by the large gluon flux and by selection cuts employed in the Higgs boson searches in the decay channel $ H \to W^+W^-$, as was first pointed out by Binoth {\it et al.} in the context of $gg \to W^+W^-$ production. For cuts employed by the ATLAS collaboration, we find that the gluon fusion contribution to $pp \to W^+W^-j$ enhances the background by about ten percent and can lead to moderate distortions of kinematic distributions which are instrumental for the ongoing Higgs boson searches at the LHC. We also release a public code to compute the NLO QCD corrections to this process, in the form of an add-on to the package {\tt MCFM}.

One-loop calculations in quantum field theory: from Feynman diagrams to unitarity cuts

The success of the experimental program at the Tevatron re-inforced the idea that precision physics at hadron colliders is desirable and, indeed, possible. The Tevatron data strongly suggests that one-loop computations in QCD describe hard scattering well. Extrapolating this observation to the LHC, we conclude that knowledge of many short-distance processes at next-to-leading order may be required to describe the physics of hard scattering. While the field of one-loop computations is quite mature, parton multiplicities in hard LHC events are so high that traditional computational techniques become inefficient. Recently new approaches based on unitarity have been developed for calculating one-loop scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. These methods are especially suitable for the description of multi-particle processes in QCD and are amenable to numerical implementations. We present a systematic pedagogical description of both conceptual and technical aspects of the new methods.

The VVA correlator at three loops in perturbative QCD

It is known that the correlator of one axial and two vector currents, that receives leading contributions through one-loop fermion triangle diagrams, is not modified by QCD radiative corrections at two loops. It was suggested that this non-renormalization of the VVA correlator persists in higher orders in perturbative QCD as well. To check this assertion, we compute the three-loop QCD corrections to the VAA-correlator u sing the technique of asymptotic expansions. We find that these corrections do not vanish and that they are proportional to the QCD beta-function.

Tree amplitudes and color decomposition in broken SU(2)

We propose a color decomposition for general tree amplitudes in a SU(2) gauge theory which is spontaneously broken via the Higgs mechanism. Working in the unitary gauge, we construct color-ordered amplitudes by explicitly presenting a set of color-ordered Feynman rules. Those primitive amplitudes are gauge-invariant, and they preserve perturbative unitarity in the high-energy limit. Serving as building blocks of color-dressed tree amplitudes, they allow for efficient evaluation of tree-level scattering amplitudes involving gauge bosons and the Higgs boson via the Berends-Giele recursion relations for color-ordered currents. We demonstrate the efficiency of this computational scheme by calculating on-shell amplitudes for scattering of five, six and nine W-bosons in the limit of vanishing Weinberg angle.

A subtraction scheme for NNLO computations

We use the known soft and collinear limits of tree- and one-loop scattering amplitudes -- computed over a decade ago -- to explicitly construct a subtraction scheme for next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) computations. Our approach combines partitioning of the final-state phase space together with the technique of sector decomposition, following recent suggestions in Ref. [1]. We apply this scheme to a toy example: the NNLO QED corrections to the decay of the Z boson to a pair of massless leptons. We argue that the main features of this subtraction scheme remain valid for computations of processes of arbitrary complexity with NNLO accuracy.

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly: constituent quark loops and QCD effects

The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can be estimated by computing constituent quark loops. Such an estimate is very sensitive to the numerical values of the constituent quark masses. These can be fixed by computing the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly within the same model. In this Letter, we demonstrate the stability of this framework against first-order perturbative QCD corrections.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for W+W+jj production at the LHC

Because the LHC is a proton-proton collider, sizable production of two positively charged W-bosons in association with two jets is possible. This process leads to a distinct signature of same sign high-pt leptons, missing energy and jets. We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the QCD-mediated part of pp -> W+W+jj. These corrections reduce the dependence of the production cross-section on the renormalization and factorization scale to about +- 10 percent. We find that a large number of W+W+jj events contain a relatively hard third jet. The presence of this jet should help to either pick up the W+W+jj signal or to reject it as an unwanted background.

NLO QCD corrections for W^+W^- pair production in association with two jets at hadron colliders

We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the pair production of W-bosons in association with two jets at the Tevatron and the LHC. This process is an important background to heavy Higgs-boson production in association with two jets, either in gluon or weak boson fusion. We consider leptonic decays of W-bosons and include all the spin correlations exactly. For natural choices of the renormalization scale, the NLO QCD corrections to pp(ppbar) -> W^+W^-jj are moderate but different for various values of the center-of-mass collision energy at the LHC and the Tevatron, emphasizing the need to compute them explicitly.

QCD corrections to top quark pair production in association with a photon at hadron colliders

We compute QCD corrections to the production of a ttbar pair in association with a hard photon at the Tevatron and the LHC. This process allows a direct measurement of the top quark electromagnetic couplings that, at the moment, are only loosely constrained. We include top quark decays, treating them in the narrow width approximation, and retain spin correlations of final-state particles. Photon radiation off top quark decay products is included in our calculation and yields a significant contribution to the cross-section. We study next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the ppbar -> ttbar+gamma process at the Tevatron for the selection criteria used in a recent measurement by the CDF collaboration. We also discuss the impact of QCD corrections to the pp -> ttbar+gamma process on the measurement of the top quark electric charge at the 14 TeV LHC.

The four-dimensional helicity scheme and dimensional reconstruction

The four-dimensional helicity regularization scheme is often used in one-loop QCD computations. It was recently argued in Ref. [1] that this scheme is inconsistent beyond the one-loop order in perturbation theory. In this paper, we clarify the reason for this inconsistency by studying the perturbative expansion of the vector current correlator in one-flavor QED through three-loop order. We develop a simple, practical way to fix the four-dimensional helicity scheme using the idea of dimensional reconstruction, and demonstrate its application in several illustrative examples.

Top quark pair production in association with a jet: QCD corrections and jet radiation in top quark decays

We consider top quark pair production in association with a hard jet through next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Top quark decays are treated in the narrow width approximation and spin correlations are retained throughout the computation. We include hard jet radiation by top quark decay products and explore their importance for basic kinematic distributions at the Tevatron and the LHC. Our results suggest that QCD corrections and jet radiation in decays can lead to significant changes in shapes of basic distributions and, therefore, need to be included for the description of ttbar+jet production. We compare the shape of the transverse momentum distribution of a top quark pair recently measured by the D0 collaboration with the result of our computation and find reasonable agreement.

Top quark spin correlations at the Tevatron and the LHC

Spin correlations of top quarks produced in hadron collisions have not been observed experimentally with large significance. In this Letter, we propose a new variable that may enable demonstration of the existence of spin correlations with 3-4 sigma significance using just a few hundred dilepton events both at the Tevatron and the LHC. Such number of dilepton events has been observed at the Tevatron. At the LHC, it will become available once integrated luminosity of a few hundred inverse picobarns is collected.

Next-to-leading order QCD effects and the top quark mass measurements at the LHC

It is anticipated that a number of techniques to measure the top quark mass at the LHC will yield m_top with uncertainties of about 0.5-1 percent. These uncertainties are mostly theoretical; they are usually estimated using parton shower Monte Carlo programs whose reliability at this level of precision is difficult to assess. The goal of this paper is to contrast those estimates with the results of NLO QCD computations for a few observables, often discussed in the context of high-precision top quark mass measurements at the LHC. In particular, we study the NLO QCD corrections to the invariant mass distribution of a charged lepton and a B-meson in lepton+jets channels. In the dilepton channel we investigate the invariant mass distribution of a charged lepton and a b-jet, the average energy of the two leptons and the average energy of the b-jets from top decays.

NLO QCD corrections to five-jet production at LEP and the extraction of alpha_s(M_Z)

The highest exclusive jet multiplicity studied at LEP experiments is five. In this paper we compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to e+e- annihilation to five jets, essentially closing the (pure) perturbative QCD studies of exclusive jetty final states at LEP. We compare fixed-order perturbative results with ALEPH data. We estimate hadronization corrections to five-jet observables using the event generator SHERPA, which employs the CKKW procedure to combine a reliable perturbative treatment of high-multiplicity jet final states with parton showers. We show that a competitive value of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1156 +0.0041 -0.0034 can be extracted from the distribution of the five-jet resolution parameter and the five-jet rate at LEP1 and LEP2.

NLO QCD corrections to top quark pair production in association with one hard jet at hadron colliders

We compute the QCD corrections to the production of a top quark pair in association with one hard jet at the Tevatron and the LHC, using the method of generalized D-dimensional unitarity. Top quark decays are included at leading order in perturbative QCD. We present kinematic distributions of top quark decay products in lepton plus jets and dilepton final states at the Tevatron and the LHC, using realistic selection cuts. We confirm a strong reduction of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry for the process ttbar+jet at the Tevatron at next-to-leading order, first observed by Dittmaier, Uwer and Weinzierl. We argue that there is a natural way to understand this reduction and that it does not imply a breakdown of the perturbative expansion for the asymmetry.

Spin determination of single-produced resonances at hadron colliders

We study the production of a single resonance at the LHC and its decay into a pair of Z bosons. We demonstrate how full reconstruction of the final states allows us to determine the spin and parity of the resonance and restricts its coupling to vector gauge bosons. Full angular analysis is illustrated with the simulation of the production and decay chain including all spin correlations and the most general couplings of spin-zero, -one, and -two resonances to Standard Model matter and gauge fields. We note implications for analysis of a resonance decaying to other final states.

Generalized unitarity at work: first NLO QCD results for hadronic W+3jet production

We compute the leading color, next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the dominant partonic channels for the production of a W boson in association with three jets at the Tevatron and the LHC. This is the first application of generalized unitarity for realistic one-loop calculations. The method performs well in this non-trivial test and offers great promise for the future.

Second order QCD corrections to inclusive semileptonic b \to Xc l \bar ν_l decays with massless and massive lepton

We extend previous computations of the second order QCD corrections to semileptonic b \to c inclusive transitions, to the case where the charged lepton in the final state is massive. This allows accurate description of b \to c τ\bar ν_τdecays. We review techniques used in the computation of O(α_s^2) corrections to inclusive semileptonic b \to c transitions and present extensive numerical studies of O(α_s^2) QCD corrections to b \to c l \bar ν_l decays, for l =e, τ.

O(α_s^2) corrections to semileptonic decay b \to c l \bar ν_l

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to b \to c l \bar ν_l decay rate at a fully differential level. Arbitrary cuts on kinematic variables of the decay products can be imposed. Our computation can be used to study the NNLO QCD corrections to the total decay rate as well as to the lepton energy, hadronic invariant mass and hadronic energy moments and to incorporate those corrections into global fits of inclusive semileptonic B-decays.

Perturbative Heavy Quark Fragmentation Function through O(alpha_s^2)

We derive the initial condition for the perturbative fragmentation function of a heavy quark through order O(alpha_s^2) in the MS-bar scheme. This initial condition is useful for computing heavy quark (or lepton, in case of QED) energy distributions from calculations with massless partons. In addition, the initial condition at O(alpha_s^2) can be used to resum collinear logarithms ln(Q^2/m^2) in heavy quark energy spectrum with next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy by solving the DGLAP equation.

The photon energy spectrum in B-> X_s + γin perturbative QCD through O(α_s^2)

We derive the dominant part of the O(α_s^2) correction to the photon energy spectrum in the inclusive decay B-> X_s+gamma. The detailed knowledge of the spectrum is important for relating the theoretical calculations of the B-> X_s + γdecay rate and the experimental measurements where a cut on the photon energy is applied. In addition, moments of the photon energy spectrum are used for the determination of the b-quark mass and other fundamental parameters of heavy quark physics. Our calculation reduces the theoretical uncertainty associated with uncalculated higher orders effects and shows that, for B-> X_s+γ, QCD radiative corrections to the photon energy spectrum are under theoretical control.

Higgs boson production at hadron colliders: differential cross sections through next-to-next-to-leading order

We present a calculation of the fully differential cross section for Higgs boson production in the gluon fusion channel through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We apply the method introduced in \cite{Anastasiou:2003gr} to compute double real emission corrections. Our calculation permits arbitrary cuts on the final state in the reaction $hh \to H + X$. It can be easily extended to include decays of the Higgs boson into observable final states. In this Letter, we discuss the most important features of the calculation, and present some examples of physical applications that illustrate the range of observables that can be studied using our result. We compute the NNLO rapidity distribution of the Higgs boson, and also calculate the NNLO rapidity distribution with a veto on jet activity.

High-precision QCD at hadron colliders: electroweak gauge boson rapidity distributions at NNLO

We compute the rapidity distributions of W and Z bosons produced at the Tevatron and the LHC through next-to-next-to leading order in QCD. Our results demonstrate remarkable stability with respect to variations of the factorization and renormalization scales for all values of rapidity accessible in current and future experiments. These processes are therefore ``gold-plated'': current theoretical knowledge yields QCD predictions accurate to better than one percent. These results strengthen the proposal to use W and Z production to determine parton-parton luminosities and constrain parton distribution functions at the LHC. For example, LHC data should easily be able to distinguish the central parton distribution fit obtained by MRST from that obtained by Alekhin.

NLO Higgs boson rapidity distribution at hadron colliders

We describe a new method, based on an extension of the unitarity cutting rules proposed earlier, which is very efficient for the algorithmic evaluation of phase-space integrals for various differential distributions. As a first application, we compute the next-to-leading order normalized rapidity distribution of the CP-even and the CP-odd Higgs boson produced in hadron collisions through gluon fusion. We work in the heavy top-quark approximation; we find that the NLO corrections at the LHC are approximately 5% in the zero rapidity region.

Semileptonic b --> u decays: lepton invariant mass spectrum

We compute O(alpha_s^2) QCD corrections to the lepton invariant mass spectrum in the decay b --> u l nu_l, relevant for the determination of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}|. Our method can also be used to evaluate moments of the lepton energy distribution with an O(alpha_s^2) accuracy. The abelian part of our result gives the neutrino invariant mass spectrum in the muon decay and, upon integration, the O(alpha^2) correction to the muon lifetime.

Two-loop QCD corrections to semileptonic b decays at an intermediate recoil

We present complete O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the decay b-->c+l+nu at the point where the invariant mass of the leptons sqrt{q^2} equals the c quark mass. We use this result, together with previously obtained corrections at the ends of the q^2 spectrum, to estimate the total width of the semileptonic b-->c decay with O(alpha_s^2) accuracy, essential for the |V_{cb}| determination.

Complete O(alpha_s^2) Corrections to Zero-Recoil Sum Rules for B-->D* Transitions

We present the complete O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the unit operator in the zero-recoil sum rule for the B-->D* transition. We include both perturbative and power-suppressed nonperturbative effects in a manner consistent with the operator product expansion. The impact of these corrections on |V_cb| extracted from semileptonic B-->D* decays near zero recoil is discussed. The mixing of the heavy quark kinetic operator with the unit operator at the two loop level is obtained. O(alpha_s) corrections to a number of power-suppressed operators are calculated.

Techniques for computing two-loop QCD corrections to b-->c transitions

We have recently presented the complete O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the semileptonic decay width of the b quark at maximal recoil. Here we discuss various technical aspects of that calculation and further applications of similar methods. In particular, we describe an expansion which facilitates the phase space integrations and the treatment of the mixed real-virtual corrections, for which Taylor expansion does not work and the so-called eikonal expansion must be employed. Several terms of the expansion are given for the O(alpha_s^2) QCD corrections to the differential semileptonic decay width of the b --quark at maximal recoil. We also demonstrate how the light quark loop corrections to the top quark decay rate can be obtained using the same methods. We briefly discuss the application of these techniques to the calculation of the O(alpha_s^2) correction to zero recoil sum rules for heavy flavor transitions.

Two-loop QCD corrections to semileptonic b decays at maximal recoil

We present a complete $O(α_s^2)$ correction to the differential width of the inclusive semileptonic decay $b\to clν_l$ at the kinematical point of vanishing invariant mass of the leptons, $q^2=0$. Together with the recently computed $O(α_s^2)$ correction at the upper boundary of the lepton invariant mass spectrum, this new information permits an estimate of the $O(α_s^2)$ effect in the total inclusive semileptonic decay width $b\to clν_l$. We argue that the non-BLM part of the $O(α_s^2)$ correction gives at most 1% correction to the inclusive semileptonic decay width $b\to clν_l$. This significantly improves the credibility of extracting $|V_{cb}|$ from the inclusive semileptonic decays of the b-hadrons.
