Cosmology from Strong Interactions

The wealth of theoretical and phenomenological information about Quantum Chromodynamics at short and long distances collected so far in major collider measurements has profound implications in cosmology. We provide a brief discussion on the major implications of the strongly coupled dynamics of quarks and gluons as well as on effects due to their collective motion on the physics of the early universe and in astrophysics.

Dark Energy and Neutrino Superfluids

We show that the neutrino mass, the dark matter and the dark energy can be explained in a unified framework, postulating a new invisible Born-Infeld field, which we name "non-linear dark photon", undergoing a meV-scale dynamical transmutation and coupled to neutrinos. Dark energy genesis is dynamically explained as a byproduct of the dark photon condensation, inducing the bare massless neutrinos to acquire an effective mass around the meV scale. It is fascinating to contemplate the channel induced by the non-linear dark photon leading to the pairing of the non-relativistic neutrinos, hence generating a cosmological superfluid state. As a consequence, the appearance of a light neutrino composite boson is predicted, providing a good cold dark matter candidate. In particular, if our model is enriched by an extra global Lepton number $U_L(1)$ symmetry, then the neutrino pair can be identified with a composite Majoron field with intriguing phenomenological implications for the neutrinoless-double-beta-decay ($0νββ$). Our model carries interesting phenomenological implications since dark energy, dark matter and the neutrino mass are time-varying dynamical variables, as a consequence of the non-linear Born-Infeld interaction terms. Limits arising from PLANCK+SNe+BAO collaborations data are also discussed. Finally, our model allows for an inverse hierarchy of neutrino masses, with interesting implications for the JUNO experiment.

Experimental test of Non-Commutative Quantum Gravity by VIP-2 Lead

Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) violations induced by space-time non-commutativity, a class of universality for several models of Quantum Gravity, are investigated by the VIP-2 Lead experiment at the Gran Sasso underground National Laboratory of INFN. The VIP-2 Lead experimental bound on the non-commutative space-time scale $Λ$ excludes $θ$-Poincaré far above the Planck scale for non vanishing ``electric-like" components of $θ_{μν}$, and up to $6.9 \cdot 10^{-2}$ Planck scales if they are null. Therefore, this new bound represents the tightest one so far provided by atomic transitions tests. This result strongly motivates high sensitivity underground X-ray measurements as critical tests of Quantum Gravity and of the very microscopic space-time structure.

Induced Gravitational Waves from Multi-Sound Speed Resonances during Cosmological Inflation

We explore the possibility of multi-parametric resonances from time varying sound speed during cosmological inflation. In particular, we fix our set-up to the simpler case beyond a single oscillation model already explored in literature: two sinusoidal harmonics around a constant sound speed equal to one. We find that, within the perturbative regime, except for some certain extreme corners of the parameter space, the primordial density spectrum is characterized by two groups of amplified peaks centered around two critical oscillatory frequencies of the sound speed. As a general result, we show that the energy spectrum of the secondary induced GWs from the inflationary era has a single major broad peak, whereas the one from the radiation dominated phase consists of one/two principle peak-like configuration(s) for relatively small/large ratio of two oscillatory frequencies. The GW relic stochastic backgrounds carry a gravitational memory of the parametric resonances during inflation. GW signals from double sound speed resonances can be tested in complementary channels from Pulsar-timing radio-astronomy, space and terrestrial GW interferometers.

Inflation, SUSY breaking, and primordial black holes in modified supergravity coupled to chiral matter

We propose a novel model of the modified (Starobinsky-like) old-minimal-type supergravity coupled to a chiral matter superfield, that can {\it simultaneously} describe multi-field inflation, primordial black hole (PBH) formation, dark matter (DM), and spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking after inflation in a Minkowski vacuum. The PBH masses in our supergravity model of double slow-roll inflation, with a short phase of "ultra-slow-roll" between two slow-roll phases, are close to $10^{18}$ g. We find that a significant PBH fraction in the allowed mass window can be supplemented by spontaneous SUSY breaking in the vacuum with the gravitino mass close to the scalaron (inflaton) mass M of the order $10^{13}$ GeV. Our supergravity model favors the {\it composite} nature of DM as a mixture of PBH and heavy gravitinos as the lightest SUSY particles. The composite DM significantly relaxes fine-tuning needed for the whole PBH-DM. The PBH-DM fraction is derived, and the second-order gravitational wave background induced by the enhanced scalar perturbations is calculated. Those gravitational waves may be accessible by the future space-based gravitational interferometers.

Interpreting B-anomalies within an extended 331 gauge theory

In light of the recent $R_{K^{(*)}}$ data on neutral current flavour anomalies in $B \to K^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays, we re-examine their quantitative interpretation in terms of an extended 331 gauge theory framework. We achieve this by adding two extra lepton species with novel 331 charges, while ensuring that the model remains anomaly free. In contrast to the canonical 331 models, the gauge charges of the first and second lepton families differ from each other, allowing lepton flavour universality violation. We further expand the model by adding the neutral fermions required to provide an adequate description for small neutrino masses.

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) Science Book (2021 Edition)

Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. The LHAASO Collaboration organized an editorial working group and finished all editorial work of this science book, to summarize the instrumental features and outline the prospects of scientific researches with the LHAASO experiment.

Topological portals from matter to antimatter

We discuss possibilities of generating a Majorana mass for the neutron from topological quantum gravity effects which survive at mesoscopic scales from decoherence. We show how virtual micro-black hole (BH) pairs with skyrme/baryon hairs induce a neutron-antineutron transition which can be tested in next generation of experiments. Such effects do not destabilize the proton. We also discuss how BHs with mix ordinary and mirror baryon hairs can mediate neutron-mirror neutron mixings.

Generalized Holographic Principle, Gauge Invariance and the Emergence of Gravity a la Wilczek

We show that a generalized version of the holographic principle can be derived from the Hamiltonian description of information flow within a quantum system that maintains a separable state. We then show that this generalized holographic principle entails a general principle of gauge invariance. When this is realized in an ambient Lorentzian space-time, gauge invariance under the Poincare group is immediately achieved. We apply this pathway to retrieve the action of gravity. The latter is cast a la Wilczek through a similar formulation derived by MacDowell and Mansouri, which involves the representation theory of the Lie groups SO(3,2) and SO(4,1).

Gravitational footprints of massive neutrinos and lepton number breaking

We investigate the production of primordial Gravitational Waves (GWs) arising from First Order Phase Transitions (FOPTs) associated to neutrino mass generation in the context of type-I and inverse seesaw schemes. We examine both "high-scale" as well as "low-scale" variants, with either explicit or spontaneously broken lepton number symmetry $U(1)_L$ in the neutrino sector. In the latter case, a pseudo-Goldstone majoron-like boson may provide a candidate for cosmological dark matter. We find that schemes with softly-broken $U(1)_L$ and with single Higgs-doublet scalar sector lead to either no FOPTs or too weak FOPTs, precluding the detectability of GWs in present or near future measurements. Nevertheless, we found that, in the majoron-like seesaw scheme with spontaneously broken $U(1)_L$ at finite temperatures, one can have strong FOPTs and non-trivial primordial GW spectra which can fall well within the frequency and amplitude sensitivity of upcoming experiments, including LISA, BBO and u-DECIGO. However, GWs observability clashes with invisible Higgs decay constraints from the LHC. A simple and consistent fix is to assume the majoron-like mass to lie above the Higgs-decay kinematical threshold. We also found that the majoron-like variant of the low-scale seesaw mechanism implies a different GW spectrum than the one expected in the high-scale seesaw. This feature will be testable in future experiments. Our analysis shows that GWs can provide a new and complementary portal to test the neutrino mass generation mechanism.

Gravitino and Polonyi production in supergravity

We study production of gravitino and Polonyi particles in the minimal Starobinsky-Polonyi $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity with inflaton belonging to a massive vector supermultiplet. Our model has only one free parameter given by the scale of spontaneous SUSY breaking triggered by Polonyi chiral superfield. The vector supermultiplet generically enters the action non-minimally, via an arbitrary real function. This functon is chosen to generate the inflaton scalar potential of the Starobinsky model. Our supergravity model can be reformulated as an abelian supersymmetric gauge theory with the vector gauge superfield coupled to two (Higgs and Polonyi) chiral superfields interacting with supergravity, where the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. We find that Polonyi and gravitino particles are efficiently produced during inflation. After inflation, perturbative decay of inflaton also produces Polonyi particles that rapidly decay into gravitinos. As a result, a coherent picture of inflation and dark matter emerges, where the abundance of produced gravitinos after inflation fits the CMB constraints as a Super Heavy Dark Matter (SHDM) candidate. Our scenario avoids the notorous gravitino and Polonyi problems with the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and DM overproduction.

Holographic Naturalness

The Holographic Naturalness (HN) is a new paradigm towards an explanation of the Cosmological Constant (CC) and the Higgs Hierarchy (HH) in the Universe. Motivated by the Holographic Principle, and inspired by the (A)dS/CFT correspondence, we elaborate on the possibility and on the cosmological consequences of a fundamental intrinsic disorder and temperature in "vacuo". We postulate that the zero vacuum entropy is provided by a large number of quantum hair fields, the "hairons". The quantum hairon gas in space-time induces an effective decoherence effect to the Standard Model (SM) particle sector. This is leading to an entropic reinterpretation of UV divergent contributions to CC and HH: we will show that, in both the cases, the large number of re-scatterings on the hairon ensamble suppresses any radiative instabilities. The CC and HH problems are illusions envisaged by a conscious observer, having access on the limited amount of informations from SM tests: both the issues are originated from our ignorance of the hidden entropy intrinsically stored in the space-time. The HN suggests to search for effective decoherence effects in particle physics observables such as effective CPT, Unitarity and Energy violations. Regarding the HH, the HN does not introduce any new particles or interactions around the TeV-scale: we do not expect for any signatures, at LHC and any future high energy colliders, related to the Higgs UV completion in a Wilsonian sense.

Holographic Naturalness and Cosmological Relaxation

We rediscuss the main Cosmological Problems as illusions originated from our ignorance of the hidden information holographically stored in {\it vacuo}. The Cosmological vacuum state is full of a large number of dynamical quantum hairs, dubbed {\it hairons}, which dominate the Cosmological Entropy. We elaborate on the Cosmological Constant (CC) problem, in both the dynamical and time-constant possibilities. We show that all dangerous quantum mixings between the CC and the Planck energy scales are exponentially suppressed as an entropic collective effect of the hairon environment. As a consequence, the dark energy scale is UV insensitive to any planckian corrections. On the other hand, the inflation scale is similarly stabilized from any radiative effects. In the case of the Dark energy, we show the presence of a holographic entropic attractor, favoring a time variation of $Λ\rightarrow 0$ in future rather than a static CC case; i.e. $w>-1$ Dynamical DE is favored over a CC or a $w<-1$ phantom cosmology. In both the inflation and dark energy sectors, we elaborate on the Trans-Planckian problem, in relation with the recently proposed Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC). We show that the probability for any sub-planckian wavelength modes to survive after inflation is completely negligible as a holographic wash-out mechanism. In other words, the hairons provide for a holographic decoherence of the transplanckian modes in a holographic scrambling time. This avoids the TCC strong bounds on the Inflaton and DE potentials.

preprint2020arXiv

Holographic Naturalness and Topological Phase Transitions

We show that our Universe lives in a topological and non-perturbative vacuum state full of a large amount of hidden quantum hairs, the hairons. We will discuss and elaborate on theoretical evidences that the quantum hairs are related to the gravitational topological winding number in vacuo. Thus, hairons are originated from topological degrees of freedom, holographically stored in the de Sitter area. The hierarchy of the Planck scale over the Cosmological Constant (CC) is understood as an effect of a Topological Memory intrinsically stored in the space-time geometry. Any UV quantum destabilizations of the CC are re-interpreted as Topological Phase Transitions, related to the desapparence of a large ensamble of topological hairs. This process is entropically suppressed, as a tunneling probability from the N- to the 0-states. Therefore, the tiny CC in our Universe is a manifestation of the rich topological structure of the space-time. In this portrait, a tiny neutrino mass can be generated by quantum gravity anomalies and accommodated into a large N-vacuum state. We will re-interpret the CC stabilization from the point of view of Topological Quantum Computing. An exponential degeneracy of topological hairs non-locally protects the space-time memory from quantum fluctuations as in Topological Quantum Computers.

Multi-boundary entanglement in Chern-Simons theory with finite gauge groups

We study the multi-boundary entanglement structure of the states prepared in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensional Chern-Simons theory with finite discrete gauge group $G$. The states in (1+1)-$d$ are associated with Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with multiple $S^1$ boundaries and we use replica trick to compute the entanglement entropy for such states. In (2+1)-$d$, we focus on the states associated with torus link complements which live in the tensor product of Hilbert spaces associated with multiple $T^2$. We present a quantitative analysis of the entanglement structure for both abelian and non-abelian groups. For all the states considered in this work, we find that the entanglement entropy for direct product of groups is the sum of entropy for individual groups, i.e. $\text{EE}(G_1 \times G_2) = \text{EE}(G_1)+\text{EE}(G_2)$. Moreover, the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing out a subset of the total Hilbert space has a positive semidefinite partial transpose on any bi-partition of the remaining Hilbert space.

New Non-commutative and Higher Derivatives Quantum Mechanics from GUPs

We explore a new class of Non-linear GUPs (NLGUP) showing the emergence of a new non-commutative and higher derivatives quantum mechanics. Within it, we introduce the shortest fundamental scale as a UV fixed point in the NLGUP commutators [X, P] = i\hbar f(P), having in mind a fundamental highest energy threshold related to the Planck scale. We show that this leads to lose commutativity of space coordinates, that start to be dependent by the angular momenta of the system. On the other hand, non-linear GUP must lead to a redefinition of the Schrodinger equation to a new non-local integral-differential equation. We also discuss the modification of the Dyson series in time-dependent perturbative approaches. This may suggest that, in NLGUPs, non-commutativity and higher derivatives may be intimately interconnected within a unified and coherent algebra. We also show that Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations are extended with higher space-derivatives according to the NLGUP. We compute momenta-dependent corrections to the dispersion velocity, showing that the Lorentz invariance is deformed. We comment on possible implications in tests of light dispersion relations from Gamma-Ray-Bursts or Blazars, with potential interests for future experiments such as LHAASO, HAWC and CTA.

Probing new physics with multi-vacua quantum tunnelings beyond standard model through gravitational waves

We report on a novel phenomenon of particle cosmology, which features specific cosmological phase transitions via quantum tunnelings through multiple vacua. The latter is inspired by the axiverse ideas and enables us to probe the associated new physics models through a potential observation of specific patterns in the stochastic gravitational waves background. Multiple vacua may induce the nucleation of co-existing bubbles over the phase transition epoch, hence enhancing the overall process of bubbles' nucleation. Our detailed analysis of semi-analytical and numerical solutions to the bounce equations of the path integral in three vacua case has enabled us to determine the existence of three instanton solutions. This new mechanism of cosmological phase transitions clearly predicts a possibly sizeable new source of gravitational waves, with its energy spectrum being featured with particular patterns, which could be probed by the future gravitational wave interferometers.

Self-consistent approach for measuring the energy spectra and composition of cosmic rays and determining the properties of hadronic interactions at high energy

Air showers, produced by the interaction of energetic cosmic rays with the atmosphere, are an excellent alternative to study particle physics at energies beyond any human-made particle accelerator. For that, it is necessary to identify first the mass composition of the primary cosmic ray (and its energy). None of the existing high energy interaction models have been able to reproduce coherently all air shower observables over the entire energy and zenith angle phase space. This is despite having tried all possible combinations for the cosmic ray mass composition. This proposal outlines a self-consistent strategy to study high energy particle interactions and identify the energy spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays. This strategy involves the participation of different particle accelerators and astrophysics experiments. This is important to cover the entire cosmic ray energy range and a larger phase-space of shower observables to probe the high energy interaction models.

Analogous BMS Symmetry in QED and Quantum Anomaly in Dirac and Weyl Semimetals

We show that the asymptotic infinite dimensional enlarged gauge symmetries constructed for QED are anomalous in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. This symmetry is particularly important in particle physics for its analogy with the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries in gravity, as well as for its connection with QED soft IR theorems. This leads to observable effects, because of the induction of a new current in the material, which carries a memory of the BMS symmetry precursor.

Conformal Bootstrap in dS/CFT and Topological Quantum Gravity

We show that the correspondence among $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$, the 1D Schwarzian Model, Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and 2+1D Topological Quantum Gravity can be extended to the case of $dS_{3}/CFT_{2}$. The $R$-matrix, related to the gravitational scattering amplitude near the horizon of $dS_{3}$ black hole, corresponds (on the side of the holographic projection) to a crossing kernel in the Schwarzian Model. The $R$-matrix is related to the 6j-symbol of SU$(1,1)$. We also find that in the Euclidean $dS_{3}$ a new Kac-Moody symmetry of instantons emerges out. We dub these new solutions {\it Kac-Moodions}. A one-to-one correspondence of Kac-Moodion levels and SU$(2)$ spin representations is established. Every instanton then corresponds to spin representations deployed in Topological Quantum Gravity. The instantons are directly connected to the Black Hole entropy, as punctures on its horizon. This strongly supports the recent proposal, in arXiv:1707.00347, that a Kac-Moody symmetry of gravitational instantons is related to the black hole information processing. We also comment on a further correspondence that can be established between the Schwarzian Model and non-commutative spacetimes in 2+1D, passing through the equivalence with Topological Quantum Gravity with cosmological constant, in the limit when the latter vanishes.

Gravitational Instability of Exotic Compact Objects

Exotic compact objects with physical surfaces a Planckian distance away from where the horizon would have been are inspired in quantum gravity. Most of these objects are defined by a classical spacetime metric, such as boson stars, gravastars and wormholes. We show that these classical objects are gravitationally unstable because accretion of ordinary and dark matter, and gravitational waves forces them to collapse to a black hole by the Hoop conjecture. To avoid collapse, their surface must be a macroscopic distance away from the horizon or they must violate the null energy condition.

$\infty-\infty$: vacuum energy and virtual black-holes

We discuss other contributions to the vacuum energy of quantum field theories and quantum gravity, which have not been considered in literature. As is well known, the presence of virtual particles in vacuum provides the so famous and puzzling contributions to the vacuum energy. As is well known, these mainly come from loop integrations over the four-momenta space. However, we argue that these also imply the presence of a mass density of virtual particles in every volume cell of space-time. The most important contribution comes from quantum gravity $S^{2}\times S^{2}$ bubbles, corresponding to virtual black hole pairs. The presence of virtual masses could lead to another paradox: the space-time itself would have an intrinsic virtual mass density contribution leading to a disastrous contraction - as is known, no negative masses exist in general relativity. We dub this effect {\it the cosmological problem of second type}: if not other counter-terms existed, the vacuum energy would be inevitably destabilized by virtual-mass contributions. It would be conceivable that the cosmological problem of second type could solve the first one. Virtual masses renormalize the vacuum energy to an unpredicted parameter, as in the renormalization procedure of the Standard Model charges. In the limit of $M_{Pl}\rightarrow \infty$ (Pauli-Villars limit), virtual black holes have a mass density providing an infinite counter-term to the vacuum energy divergent contribution $M_{Pl} \rightarrow \infty$ (assuming $M_{UV}=M_{Pl}$). Therefore, in the same Schwinger-Feynman-Tomonaga attitude, the problem of a divergent vacuum energy could be analogous to the {\it put-by-hand} procedure used for Standard Model parameters.

A Unified picture of Dark Matter and Dark Energy from Invisible QCD

It has been shown in a companion paper that the late time acceleration of the universe can be accounted for by an extension of the QCD color to a $SU(3)$ invisible sector (IQCD). In this work we discuss a unified framework such the scale of dark chiral-breaking dictates both the accelerated expansion of the universe, and the origin of dark matter. We find that the strong and gravitational dynamics of dark quarks and gluons evolve to eventually form exotic dark stars. We discuss the dynamical complexity of these dark compact objects in light of dark big bang nucleosynthesis. We argue how IQCD favors a halo composed of very compact dark neutron stars, strange/quark stars and black holes, with masses $M_{MACHO}< 10^{-7}M_{\odot}$. This avoids limit from MACHO and EROS collaborations as well as limit from clusters. We also discuss possible phenomenological implications in dark matter searches. We argue that dark supernovae and dark binaries can emit very peculiar gravitational waves signal testable by the LIGO/VIRGO collaboration and future projects dedicated to these aspects.

Born-Infeld condensate as a possible origin of neutrino masses and dark energy

We discuss the possibility that a Born-Infeld condensate coupled to neutrinos can generate both neutrino masses and an effective cosmological constant. In particular, an effective field theory is provided capable of dynamically realizing the neutrino superfluid phase firstly suggested by Ginzburg and Zharkov. In such a case, neutrinos acquire a mass gap inside the Born-Infeld ether forming a long-range Cooper pair. Phenomenological implications of the approach are also discussed.

Chaotization inside Quantum Black Holes

We show how the horizon geometry and entropy of a Semiclassical Black Hole can be reconstructed from a system of $N>>1$ horizonless conic singularities with average opening angle at the horizon $\langle Θ\rangle=2π$. This conclusion is strongly motivated by a generalized Wheeler-De Witt equation for quantum black holes. We will argument how infalling information will be inevitably chaotized in these systems. A part of the initial probability density will be trapped inside the system, in back and forth scatterings among conic singularities, for a characteristic time close to the Semiclassical BH life-time. Further implications on information paradoxes are discussed.

Dark Energy and Dark Matter from Yang-Mills Condensate and the Peccei-Quinn mechanism

We analyze a model of cold axion Dark Matter weakly coupled with a dark gluon condensate, reproducing Dark Energy. We first review how to recover the Dark Energy behavior using the functional renormalization group approach, and ground our study on the properties of the effective Lagrangian, to be determined non-perturbatively. Then, within the context of $G_{SM}\times SU(2)_{D}\times U(1)_{PQ}$, we consider YMC interactions with QCD axions. Direct generation of a Majorana mass for the Neutron from Exotic Instantons

We discuss a new mechanism in which non-perturbative quantum gravity effects directly generate a Majorana mass for the neutron. In particular, in string theory, exotic instantons can generate an effective six quark operator by calculable mixed disk amplitudes. In a low string scale scenario, with $M_{S}\simeq 10÷10^{5}\, \rm TeV$, a neutron-antineutron oscillation can be reached in the next generation of experiments. we argue that protons and neutralinos are not destabilized and that dangerous FCNCs are not generated. We show an example of quiver theories, locally free by tadpoles and anomalies, reproducing MSSM plus a Majorana neutron and a Majorana neutrino. These models naturally provide a viable baryogenesis mechanism by resonant RH neutrino decays, as well as a stable WIMP-like dark matter. We also discuss how LHC data will provide useful inputs for our model, in the immediate future, testing several different regions of the parameter space. Such a mechanism represents a simple and calculable counter-example to the Wilsonian UV completion of effective non-renormalizable operators.

Dynamical R-parity violations from exotic instantons

We show how R-parity can be dynamically broken by non-perturbative quantum gravity effects. In particular, in D-brane models, Exotic instantons provide a simple and calculable mechanism for the generation of R-parity violating bilinear, trilinear and higher order superpotential terms. We show examples of MSSM-like D-brane models, in which one Exotic Instanton induces only one term among the possible R-parity violating superpotentials. Naturally, the idea can be generalized for other gauge groups. As a consequence, a dynamical violation of R-parity does not necessarily destabilize the proton, i.e. a strong fine tuning is naturally avoided, in our case. For example, a Lepton violating superpotential term can be generated without generating Baryon violating terms, and viceversa. This has strong implications in phenomenology: neutrino, neutron-antineutron, electric dipole moments, dark matter and LHC physics.

Exotic see-saw mechanism for neutrinos and leptogenesis in a Pati-Salam model

We discuss non-perturbative corrections to the neutrino sector, in the context of a D-brane Pati-Salam-like model, that can be obtained as a simple alternative to $SO(10)$ GUT's in theories with open and unoriented strings. In such D-brane models, exotic stringy instantons can correct the right-handed neutrino mass matrix in a calculable way, thus affecting mass hierarchies and modifying the see-saw mechanism to what we name exotic see-saw. For a wide range of parameters, a compact spectrum of right-handed neutrino masses can occur that gives rise to a predictive scenario for low energy observables. This model also provides a viable mechanism for Baryon Asymmetry in the Universe (BAU) through leptogenesis. Finally, a Majorana mass for the neutron is naturally predicted in the model, leading to potentially testable neutron-antineutron oscillations. Combined measurements in neutrino and neutron-antineutron sectors could provide precious informations on physics at the quantum gravity scale.

More about Neutron Majorana mass from Exotic Instantons: an alternative mechanism in Low-Scale String theory

We discuss an alternative for Baryon-violating six quarks transitions, in the contest of low scale string theory. In particular, with $M_{S}=10÷10^{3}\rm TeV$, such a transition can be mediated by two color-triplets,through a quartic coupling with down-quarks,generated by exotic instantons, in a calculable and controllable way. We show how FCNCs limits on color-triplet massare well compatible with $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation ones. If a $n-\bar{n}$ transition were found, this would be an indirect hint for our model. This would strongly motivate researches of direct channels in proton-proton colliders. In fact, our model can be directly tested in a experimentally challenging $100÷1000\, \rm TeV$ proton-proton collider, searching for our desired color-triplet states and an evidence for exotic instantons resonances, in addition to stringy Regge resonances, anomalous $Z'$-bosons and gauged megaxion. In particular, our scenario can be related to the $750\, \rm GeV$ diphoton hint identifying it with the gauged megaxion dual to the $B$-field. On the other hand, this scenario is compatible with TeV-ish color triplets visible at LHC and with $1÷10\, \rm TeV$- string scale, {\it i.e} stringy resonances at LHC.

We show that in semiclassical regime the formation of trapped periodic semiclassical orbits inside the sys- tem is unavoidable. String completion of an $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ electroweak model

The extended electroweak $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ symmetry framework "explaining" the number of fermion families is revisited. While $331$-based schemes can not easily be unified within the conventional field theory sense, we show how to do it within an approach based on D-branes and (un)oriented open strings, on Calabi-Yau singularities. We show how the theory can be UV-completed in a quiver setup, free of gauge and string anomalies. Lepton and baryon numbers are perturbatively conserved, so neutrinos are Dirac-type, and their lightness results from a novel TeV scale seesaw mechanism. Dynamical violation of baryon number by exotic instantons could induce neutron-antineutron oscillations, with proton decay and other dangerous R-parity violating processes strictly forbidden.

The fate of Schwarzschild-de Sitter Black Holes in $f(R)$ gravity

The semiclassical effects of antievaporating black holes can be discussed in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity. In particular, the Bousso-Hawking-Nojiri-Odinstov antievaporation instability of degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes (the so called Nariai space-time) leads to a dynamical increasing of black hole horizon in $f(R)$ gravity. This phenomenon causes the following transition: emitting marginally trapped surfaces become space-like surfaces before the effective Bekenstein-Hawking emission time. As a consequence, Bousso-Hawking thermal radiation cannot be emitted in an antievaporating Nariai black hole. Possible implications in cosmology and black hole physics are also discussed.

We discuss the gravitino problem in contest of the Exotic see-saw mechanism for neutrinos and Leptogenesis, UV completed by intersecting D-branes Pati-Salam models. In the Exotic see-saw model, supersymmetry is broken at high scales $M_{SUSY}>10^{9}\, \rm GeV$ and this seems in contradiction with gravitino bounds from inflation and baryogenesis. However, if gravitino is the Lightest Stable Supersymmetric Particle, it will not decay into other SUSY particles, avoiding the gravitino problem and providing a good Cold Dark Matter. Gravitini are Super Heavy Dark Particles and they can be produced by non-adiabatic expansion during inflation. Intriguingly, from bounds on the correct abundance of dark matter, we also constrain the neutrino sector. We set a limit on the exotic instantonic coupling of $<10^{-2}÷10^{-3}$. This also sets important constrains on the Calabi-Yau compactifications and on the string scale. This model strongly motivates very high energy DM indirect detection of neutrini and photons of $10^{11}÷10^{13}\, \rm GeV$: gravitini can decay on them in a cosmological time because of soft R-parity breaking effective operators.

'Exotic vector-like pair' of color-triplet scalars

We propose a minimal extension of Standard Model, generating a Majorana mass for neutron, connected with a mechanism of Post-Sphaleron Baryogenesis. We consider an `exotic vector-like pair' of color-triplet scalars, an extra Majorana fermion $ψ$, and a scalar field $ϕ$, giving mass to $ψ$. The vector-like pair is defined `exotic' because of a peculiar mass term of the color-triplet scalars, violating Baryon number as $ΔB=1$. A Post-Sphaleron Baryogenesis is realized through $ϕ$-decays into six quarks (antiquarks), or through $ψ$-decays into three quarks (antiquarks). This model suggests some intriguing B-violating signatures, testable in the next future, in Neutron-Antineutron physics and LHC. We also discuss limits from FCNC. Sterile fermion can also be light as $1-100\, \rm GeV$. In this case, the sterile fermion could be (meta)-stable and $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation can be indirectly generated by two $n-ψ$, $ψ-\bar{n}$ oscillations, without needing of an effective Majorana mass for neutron. Majorana fermion $ψ$ can be a good candidate for WIMP-like dark matter.

Neutron Majorana mass from Exotic Instantons in a Pati-Salam model

We show how exotic stringy instantons can generate an effective interaction between color diquark sextets in a Pati-Salam model, inducing a Majorana mass term for the neutron. In particular, we discuss a simple quiver theory for a Pati-Salam like model, as an example in which the calculations of exotic instantons' effects are simple and controllable. We discuss some different possibilities in order to generate $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation testable in the next generation of experiments, Majorana mass matrices for neutrini and a Post-Sphaleron Baryogenesis scenario. Connections with Dark Matter issues and the Higgs mass Hierarchy problem are discussed, in view of implications for LHC and rare processes physics. The model may be viewed as a completion of Left-Right symmetry, alternative to a GUT-inspired scenario. Combined measures in Neutron-Antineutron physics, FCNC, LHC, Dark Matter could rule out the proposed model or uncover aspects of physics at the Planck scale!

Neutron-antineutron transition as a test-bed for dynamical CPT violations

We show a simple mechanism for a dynamical CPT violation in the neutron sector. In particular, we show a {\it CPT-violating see-saw mechanism}, generating a Majorana mass and a CPT violating mass for the neutron. CPT-violating see-saw involves a sterile partner of the neutron, living in a hidden sector, in which CPT is spontaneously broken. In particular, neutrons (antineutrons) can communicate with the hidden sector through non-perturbative quantum gravity effects called {\it exotic instantons}. Exotic instantons dynamically break R-parity, generating one effective vertex between the neutron and its sterile partner. In this way, we show how a small CPT violating mass term for the neutron is naturally generated. This model can be tested in the next generation of experiments in neutron-antineutron physics. This strongly motivates researches of CPT-violating effects in neutron-antineutron physics, as a test-bed for dynamical CPT-violations in SM.

Nonlocal quantum field theory without acausality and nonunitarity at quantum level: is SUSY the key?

The realization of a nonlocal quantum field theory without losing unitarity, gauge invariance and causality is investigated. It is commonly retained that such a formulation is possible at tree level, but at quantum level acausality reappears at one loop. We suggest the the problem of acausality is, in a broad sense, similar to the one about anomalies in quantum field theory. By virtue of this analogy, we suggest that acausal diagrams resulting from the fermionic sector and the bosonic one might cancel each other, with a suitable content of fields and suitable symmetries. As a simple example, we show how supersymmetry can alleviate this problem in a simple and elegant way, i.e., by leading to exact cancellations of harmful diagrams, to all orders of perturbation theory, in the case of a nonlocal Wess-Zumino model. On the other hand, the same is true for a super Yang-Mills model, but in this case, other important acausal diagrams are also originating from supersymmetric D-terms. As a consequence, we conjecture that, for a generic gauge theory, an infinite number of superfields are needed in order to obtain a complete cancellation between all diagrams. This framework is naturally occurring in string theory, where infinite Kaluza-Klein towers of higher-spin fields are generally predicted.

Quantum chaos inside Black Holes

We show how semiclassical black holes can be reinterpreted as an effective geometry, composed of a large ensamble of horizonless naked singularities (eventually smoothed at the Planck scale). We call this new items {\it frizzyballs}, which can be rigorously defined by euclidean path integral approach. This has interesting implications regarding information paradoxes. We demonstrate that infalling information will chaotically propagate inside this system before going to the full quantum gravity regime (Planck scale).

Un-oriented Quiver Theories for Majorana Neutrons

In the context of un-oriented open string theories, we identify quivers whereby a Majorana mass for the neutron is indirectly generated by exotic instantons. We discuss two classes of (Susy) Standard Model like quivers, depending on the embedding of SU(2)_W in the Chan-Paton group. In both cases, the main mechanism involves a vector-like pair mixing through a non-perturbative mass term. We also discuss possible relations between the phenomenology of Neutron-Antineutron oscillations and LHC physics in these models. In particular, a vector-like pair of color-triplet scalars or color-triplet fermions could be directly detected at LHC, compatibly with n-\bar{n} limits. Finally we briefly comment on Pati-Salam extensions of our models.

Unitarization and Causalization of Non-local quantum field theories by Classicalization

We suggest that classicalization can cure non-local quantum field theories from acausal divergences in scattering amplitudes, restoring unitarity and causality. In particular, in "trans-non-local" limit, the formation of non-perturbative classical configurations, called {\it classicalons}, in scatterings like $ϕϕ\rightarrow ϕϕ$, can avoid typical acausal divergences.

External stability for Spherically Symmetric Solutions in Lorentz Breaking Massive Gravity

We discuss spherically symmetric solutions for point-like sources in Lorentz-breaking massive gravity theories. This analysis is valid for Stückelberg's effective field theory formulation, for Lorentz Breaking Massive Bigravity and general extensions of gravity leading to an extra term $-Sr^γ$ added to the Newtonian potential. The approach consists in analyzing the stability of the geodesic equations, at the first order (deviation equation). The main result is a strong constrain in the space of parameters of the theories. This motivates higher order analysis of geodesic perturbations in order to understand if a class of spherically symmetric Lorentz-breaking massive gravity solutions, for self-gravitating systems, exists. Stable and phenomenologically acceptable solutions are discussed in the no-trivial case $S\neq 0$.

Neutron Majorana mass from exotic instantons

We show how a Majorana mass for the Neutron could result from non-perturbative quantum gravity effects peculiar to string theory. In particular, "exotic instantons" in un-oriented string compactifications with D-branes extending the (supersymmetric) standard model could indirectly produce an effective operator delta{m} n^t n+h.c. In a specific model with an extra vector-like pair of `quarks', acquiring a large mass proportional to the string mass scale (exponentially suppressed by a function of the string moduli fields), delta{m} can turn out to be as low as 10^{-24}-10^{-25} eV. The induced neutron-antineutron oscillations could take place with a time scale tau_{n\bar{n}} > 10^8 s, that could be tested by the next generation of experiments. On the other hand, proton decay and FCNC's are automatically strongly suppressed and are compatible with the current experimental limits. Depending on the number of brane intersections, the model may also lead to the generation of Majorana masses for R-handed neutrini. Our proposal could also suggest neutron-neutralino or neutron-axino oscillations, with implications in UCN, Dark Matter Direct Detection, UHECR and Neutron-Antineutron oscillations. This suggests to improve the limits on neutron-antineutron oscillations, as a possible test of string theory and quantum gravity.
