More on the SW-QNM correspondence

We exploit the recently proposed correspondence between gravitational perturbations and quantum Seiberg-Witten curves to compute the spectrum of quasi-normal modes of asymptotically flat Kerr Newman black holes and establish detailed gauge/gravity dictionaries for a large class of black holes, D-branes and fuzzballs in diverse dimensions. QNM frequencies obtained from the quantum periods of $SU(2)$ ${\cal N}=2$ SYM with $N_f=3$ flavours are compared against numerical results, WKB (eikonal) approximation and geodetic motion showing remarkable agreement. Starting from the master example relating quasi-normal modes of Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$ to $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=4$, we illustrate the procedure for some simple toy-models that allow analytic solutions. We also argue that the AGT version of the gauge/gravity correspondence may give precious hints as to the physical/geometric origin of the quasi-normal modes/Seiberg-Witten connection and further elucidate interesting properties (such as tidal Love numbers and grey-body factors) that can help discriminating black holes from fuzzballs.

Partonic behavior of string scattering amplitudes from holographic QCD models

We study the emergence of partonic behavior in scattering processes at large Mandelstam's variable $s$ from string amplitudes in holographic backgrounds. We generalize the approach of Polchinski and Strassler (2001) in two ways. (i) We analyze several holographic confining backgrounds in particular the hard wall model, the soft wall model and Witten's model. (ii) In addition to deriving the asymptotic behavior of the amplitudes at fixed angle and in the Regge limit, we also expand the amplitudes around their poles, integrate over the holographic direction and then re-sum the expansion. Due to dependence of the string tension on the holographic coordinate, the resulting singularities take the form of branch points rather than poles and the amplitudes display branch cuts and acquire a finite imaginary part. This may signal the failure of the PS prescription to reproduce the correct analytic structure at low energies. We also observe that the peaks are more pronounced in the region of small $s$ but fade away for large $s$. In the fixed angle approximation we find in the hard and soft wall models that ${\cal A}\sim s^{2-Δ/2}$ whereas in Witten's model ${\cal A} \sim s^{3-Δ/2}$ and ${\cal A} \sim s^{7/3-2Δ/3}$ for the 11D and 10D formulations, respectively. In the Regge regime ${\cal A}\sim {s^{2}}\,t^{-2+α}\,(\log{s/ t})^{-1+α}$ where $α$ is the power found in the fixed angle regime. Using the pole expansion the result for each model is $Re[{\cal A}] \sim s^{-1}$, $Im[{\cal A}] \sim s^α$. We compute the corresponding amplitudes for mesons using open strings and find qualitatively similar results as for closed strings.

Perturbative higher-derivative terms in N=6 asymmetric orbifolds

We analyse the perturbative four-point amplitudes in the simplest string theory examples of T-fold backgrounds, which enjoy N=6 supersymmetries in four dimensions. There are two theories defined as asymmetric orbifolds of order 2 and 3, respectively. The perturbative spectrum and the one-loop four-point amplitudes are shown to be invariant under an arithmetic symplectic group defined over the Hurwitz (respectively Eisenstein) quaternions. The supersymmetry constraints on the low energy effective couplings are determined and we conjecture the U-duality group of the theory and the non-perturbative completion of the six-derivative coupling as a rank one theta series. We discuss the non-perturbative spectrum of BPS states in the light of our analysis.

Turning black-holes and D-branes inside out their photon-spheres

Very much as extremal Reissner-Nordstöm BHs, D3-branes and their intersecting bound-states in lower dimensions enjoy a remarkable symmetry under conformal inversions that exchange the horizon with infinity and keep the photon-sphere fixed. We explore the implications of this symmetry for the dynamics of massless and massive BPS particles. In particular we find a remarkable identity between the scattering angle of a probe impinging from infinity and the in-spiraling angle of a probe with the very same energy and angular momentum falling into the horizon from inside the photon-sphere. We argue for the identity of the radial actions and Shapiro time-delays for the two processes, when a cutoff regulator or an AdS ambient is adopted. We spell out the detailed conditions for the inversion symmetry to hold in the case of large BPS BHs in four dimensions. We address conformal inversions for other BHs and Dp-branes with photon-spheres in various dimensions with flat or AdS asymptotics. We briefly discuss the fate of the symmetry at the quantum level as well as for non spherically symmetric BHs and branes and sketch potential implications for the holographic correspondence.

Turning rotating D-branes and BHs inside out their photon-halo

We extend our investigation on Couch-Torrence conformal inversions of BHs and D-branes in various directions. We analyse asymptotically flat rotating charged BHs in $D=4$, in particular extremal rotating BHs in STU supergavity, and find invariance for special choices of the charges. Due to the dependence of the critical radii on the impact parameter(s), the relation between the scattering angle for geodesics outside the photon-halo and the in-spiralling angle for geodesics inside the photon-halo is modified by the inclusion of a boundary term. We also consider rotating BHs in $D=5$ and rotating D3-branes and find invariance under generalised Couch-Torrence inversions for special choices of the angular momenta. Alas we don't find any similar symmetry for smooth horizonless geometries. Moreover, relying on the surprising connection between classical BH perturbation theory and quantum Seiberg-Witten curves for ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theories, we study scalar wave equations in these backgrounds and identify the near super-radiant modes produced in near-extremal BH mergers. Finally, we study scalar fluctuations around Kerr-Newman BHs in AdS$_4$ and find stringent conditions for generalised Couch-Torrence symmetry that are relaxed in the extremal case or by allowing a rescaling of the wave function.

Spinning-off stringy electro-magnetic memories

We extend and generalise the string corrections to the EM memory to the Type I superstring including spin effects. Very much as in the simpler bosonic string context, the relevant corrections are non-perturbative in $α'$, slowly decaying (as $1/R$) at large distances and modulated in retarded time $u=t-R$. For spin $N$ states in the first Regge trajectory they entail a sequence of $N$ derivatives wrt $u$ on the `parent' $N=0$ amplitude. We also briefly discuss how to include loop effects, that broaden and shift the string resonances, and how to modify our analysis for macroscopic semi-classical quasi-BPS coherent states, whose collisions may lead to detectable string memory signals in viable Type I models.

Suspended Fixed Points

We study the orientifold of the ${\mathcal{N}} = 1$ superconformal field theories describing D3-branes probing the Suspended Pinch Point singularity, as well as the orientifolds of non-chiral theories obtained by a specific orbifold $\mathbb{Z}_n$ of SPP. We find that these models realize a mechanism analogous to the one recently found for the orientifold of the complex Calabi-Yau cone over the Pseudo del Pezzo surface PdP$_{3c}$: they all flow to a new IR fixed point such that the value of the $a$-charge is less than half the one of the oriented theory. We also find that the value of $a$ coincides with the charge of specific orientifolds of the toric singularities $L^{(\bar{n},\bar{n},\bar{n})}$ with $\bar{n}=3n/2$ for $n$ even or $L^{(\bar{n},\bar{n}+1,\bar{n})}$ with $\bar{n}=(3n{-}1)/2$ for $n$ odd, suggesting the existence of an IR duality.

Chaos at the rim of black hole and fuzzball shadows

We study the scattering of massless probes in the vicinity of the {\it photon-sphere} of asymptotically AdS black holes and horizon-free microstate geometries (fuzzballs). We find that these exhibit a chaotic behaviour characterised by exponentially large deviations of nearby trajectories. We compute the Lyapunov exponent $λ$ governing the exponential growth in $d$ dimensions and show that it is bounded from above by $λ_b = \sqrt{d{-}3}/2b_{\rm min}$ where $b_{\rm min}$ is the minimal impact parameter under which a massless particle is swallowed by the black hole or gets trapped in the fuzzball for a very long time. Moreover we observe that $λ$ is typically below the advocated bound on chaos $λ_H=2πκ_B T/\hbar$, that in turn characterises the radial fall into the horizon, but the bound is violated in a narrow window near extremality, where the photon-sphere coalesces with the horizon. Finally, we find that fuzzballs are characterised by Lyapunov exponents smaller than those of the corresponding BH's suggesting the possibility of discriminating the existence of micro-structures at horizon scales via the detection of ring-down modes with time scales $λ^{-1}$ longer than those expected for a BH of the given mass and spin.

Mass Deformations of Unoriented Quiver Theories

We study the interplay between mass deformations and unoriented projections of super-conformal quiver gauge theories resulting from D3-branes at (toric) Calabi-Yau singularities. We focus on simple orbifold cases ($\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_4$) and their non-orbifold descendants. This allows us to generalize the construction rules and clarify points that have been previously overlooked. In particular we spell out the conditions of anomaly cancellations as well as super-conformal invariance that typically require the introduction of flavour branes, which in turn may spoil toric symmetry. Finally, we discuss duality cascades in this context and the interplay between Seiberg/toric duality and unoriented projection with (or without) mass deformations.

String Memories ... openly retold

We identify string corrections to the EM memory effect. Though largely negligible in the low-energy limit, the effect become relevant in high-energy collisions and in extreme events. We illustrate our findings in a simple unoriented bosonic string model. Thanks to the coherent effect of the infinite tower of open string resonances, the corrections are non-perturbative in $α'$, modulated in retarded time and slowly decaying even at large distances from the source. Remarkably compact expressions obtain for special choices of the kinematics in tree-level 4-point amplitudes. We discuss further corrections occurring at higher-points and the exponential damping resulting from broadening and shifting of the massive poles due to loops. Finally we estimate the range of the parameters and masses for detectability in semi-realistic (Type I) contexts and propose a rationale for this string memory effect.

The multipolar structure of fuzzballs

We extend and refine a general method to extract the multipole moments of arbitrary stationary spacetimes and apply it to the study of a large family of regular horizonless solutions to $ {\cal N}{\,=\,}2$ four-dimensional supergravity coupled to four Abelian gauge fields. These microstate geometries can carry angular momentum and have a much richer multipolar structure than the Kerr black hole. In particular they break the axial and equatorial symmetry, giving rise to a large number of nontrivial multipole moments. After studying some analytical examples, we explore the four-dimensional parameter space of this family with a statistical analysis. We find that microstate mass and spin multipole moments are typically (but not always) larger that those of a Kerr black hole with the same mass and angular momentum. Furthermore, we find numerical evidence that some invariants associated with the (dimensionless) moments of these microstates grow monotonically with the microstate size and display a global minimum at the black-hole limit, obtained when all centers collide. Our analysis is relevant in the context of measurements of the multipole moments of dark compact objects with electromagnetic and gravitational-wave probes, and for observational tests to distinguish fuzzballs from classical black holes.

Accelerating strangelets via Penrose process in non-BPS fuzzballs

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays may include strangelets, a form of Strange Quark Matter, among their components. We briefly review their properties and discuss how they can be accelerated via Penrose process taking place in singular rotating Kerr black holes or in their smooth, horizonless counterparts in string theory, according to the fuzzball proposal. We focus on non-BPS solutions of the JMaRT kind and compute the efficiency of Penrose process that turns out not to be bounded unlike for Kerr BHs.

DDF operators, open string coherent states and their scattering amplitudes

We study interactions of string coherent states in the DDF (after Di Vecchia, Del Giudice, Fubini) formalism. For simplicity we focus on open bosonic strings. After reviewing basic properties of DDF operators and of excited open strings, we present some classical profiles and show how they become more and more compact as the number of harmonics increases at fixed mass. We then compute various three- and four-point amplitudes with insertions of coherent states, tachyons and vector bosons on the boundary of the disk relying on a convenient choice of reference null momenta. We find that the amplitudes exponentiate in a rather subtle and interesting way. We then study the high-energy fixed-angle limit, dominated by a saddle-point when coherent states are present, and the soft behaviour as the momentum of a vector boson is taken to zero. We briefly comment on generalisation of our analysis to multiple intersecting and magnetised D-branes and to closed strings.

Exotic see-saw mechanism for neutrinos and leptogenesis in a Pati-Salam model

We discuss non-perturbative corrections to the neutrino sector, in the context of a D-brane Pati-Salam-like model, that can be obtained as a simple alternative to $SO(10)$ GUT's in theories with open and unoriented strings. In such D-brane models, exotic stringy instantons can correct the right-handed neutrino mass matrix in a calculable way, thus affecting mass hierarchies and modifying the see-saw mechanism to what we name exotic see-saw. For a wide range of parameters, a compact spectrum of right-handed neutrino masses can occur that gives rise to a predictive scenario for low energy observables. This model also provides a viable mechanism for Baryon Asymmetry in the Universe (BAU) through leptogenesis. Finally, a Majorana mass for the neutron is naturally predicted in the model, leading to potentially testable neutron-antineutron oscillations. Combined measurements in neutrino and neutron-antineutron sectors could provide precious informations on physics at the quantum gravity scale.

Exploring soft constraints on effective actions

We study effective actions for simultaneous breaking of space-time and internal symmetries. Novel features arise due to the mixing of Goldstone modes under the broken symmetries which, in contrast to the usual Adler's zero, leads to non-vanishing soft limits. Such scenarios are common for spontaneously broken SCFT's. We explicitly test these soft theorems for $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM in the Coulomb branch both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. We explore the soft constraints systematically utilizing recursion relations. In the pure dilaton sector of a general CFT, we show that all amplitudes up to order $s^{n} \sim \partial^{2n}$ are completely determined in terms of the $k$-point amplitudes at order $s^k$ with $k \leq n$. Terms with at most one derivative acting on each dilaton insertion are completely fixed and coincide with those appearing in the conformal DBI, i.e. DBI in AdS. With maximal supersymmetry, the effective actions are further constrained, leading to new non-renormalization theorems. In particular, the effective action is fixed up to eight derivatives in terms of just one unknown four-point coefficient and one more coefficient for ten-derivative terms. Finally, we also study the interplay between scale and conformal invariance in this context.

Instanton corrections to the effective action of N=4 SYM

We compute the one-instanton effective action of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group Sp(2N). The result can be written in a very compact and manifestly supersymmetric form involving an integral over the superspace of an irrational function of the N=4 on-shell superfields. In the Coulomb branch, the instanton corrects both the MHV and next-to-next-MHV higher derivative terms D^4F^{2n+2} and F^{2n+4}. We confirm at the non-perturbative level the non-renormalization theorems for MHV F^{2n+2} terms that are expected to receive perturbative corrections only at n-loops. We compute also the one and two-loop corrections to the D^4F^4 term and show that its completion under SL(2,Z) duality is consistent with the one-instanton results of U(2) gauge group.

On the soft limit of closed string amplitudes with massive states

We extend our analysis of the soft behaviour of string amplitudes with massive insertions to closed strings at tree level (sphere). Relying on our previous results for open strings on the disk and on KLT formulae we check universality of the soft behaviour for gravitons to sub-leading order for superstring amplitudes and show how this gets modified for bosonic strings. At sub-sub-leading order we argue in favour of universality for superstrings on the basis of OPE of the vertex operators and gauge invariance for the soft graviton. The results are illustrated by explicit examples of 4-point amplitudes with one massive insertion in any dimension, including D=4, where use of the helicity spinor formalism drastically simplifies the expressions. As a by-product of our analysis we confirm that the `single valued projection' holds for massive amplitudes, too. We briefly comment on the soft behaviour of the anti-symmetric tensor and on loop corrections.

Revisiting light stringy states in view of the 750 GeV diphoton excess

We investigate light massive string states that appear at brane intersections. They replicate the massless spectrum in a richer fashion and may be parametrically lighter than standard Regge excitations. We identify the first few physical states and determine their BRST invariant vertex operators. In the supersymmetric case we reconstruct the super-multiplet structure. We then compute some simple interactions, such as the decay rate of a massive scalar or vector into two massless fermions. Finally we suggest an alternative interpretation of the 750 GeV diphoton excess at LHC in terms of a light massive string state, a replica of the Standard Model Higgs.

Simplifying one-loop amplitudes in superstring theory

We show that 4-point vector boson one-loop amplitudes, computed in ref.[1] in the RNS formalism, around vacuum configurations with open unoriented strings, preserving at least N=1 SUSY in D=4, satisfy the correct supersymmetry Ward identities, in that they vanish for non MHV configurations (++++) and (-+++). In the MHV case (--++) we drastically simplify their expressions. We then study factorisation and the limiting IR and UV behaviour and find some unexpected results. In particular no massless poles are exposed at generic values of the modular parameter. Relying on the supersymmetric properties of our bosonic amplitudes, we extend them to manifestly supersymmetric super-amplitudes and compare our results with those obtained in the D=4 hybrid formalism, pointing out difficulties in reconciling the two approaches for contributions from N=1,2 sectors.

Neutron Majorana mass from Exotic Instantons in a Pati-Salam model

We show how exotic stringy instantons can generate an effective interaction between color diquark sextets in a Pati-Salam model, inducing a Majorana mass term for the neutron. In particular, we discuss a simple quiver theory for a Pati-Salam like model, as an example in which the calculations of exotic instantons' effects are simple and controllable. We discuss some different possibilities in order to generate $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation testable in the next generation of experiments, Majorana mass matrices for neutrini and a Post-Sphaleron Baryogenesis scenario. Connections with Dark Matter issues and the Higgs mass Hierarchy problem are discussed, in view of implications for LHC and rare processes physics. The model may be viewed as a completion of Left-Right symmetry, alternative to a GUT-inspired scenario. Combined measures in Neutron-Antineutron physics, FCNC, LHC, Dark Matter could rule out the proposed model or uncover aspects of physics at the Planck scale!

On the soft limit of open string disk amplitudes with massive states

We discuss the soft behaviour of open string amplitudes with gluons and massive states in any dimension. Notwithstanding non-minimal couplings of massive higher spin states to gluons, relying on OPE and factorization, we argue that the leading and sub-leading terms are universal and identical to the ones in Yang-Mills theories. In order to illustrate this, we compute some 4-point amplitudes on the disk involving gluons, massive states and, for the bosonic string, tachyons. For the superstring, we revisit the structure of the massive super-multiplets at the first massive level and rewrite the amplitudes in D = 4 in the spinor helicity formalism, that we adapt to accommodate massive higher spin states. We also check the validity of a recently obtained formula relating open superstring amplitudes for mass-less states at tree-level to SYM amplitudes, by factorisation on two-particle massive poles. Finally we analyse the holomorphic soft limit of superstring amplitudes with one massive insertion.

Un-oriented Quiver Theories for Majorana Neutrons

In the context of un-oriented open string theories, we identify quivers whereby a Majorana mass for the neutron is indirectly generated by exotic instantons. We discuss two classes of (Susy) Standard Model like quivers, depending on the embedding of SU(2)_W in the Chan-Paton group. In both cases, the main mechanism involves a vector-like pair mixing through a non-perturbative mass term. We also discuss possible relations between the phenomenology of Neutron-Antineutron oscillations and LHC physics in these models. In particular, a vector-like pair of color-triplet scalars or color-triplet fermions could be directly detected at LHC, compatibly with n-\bar{n} limits. Finally we briefly comment on Pati-Salam extensions of our models.

Light stringy states

We carefully study the spectrum of open strings localized at the intersections of D6-branes and identify the lowest massive 'twisted' states and their vertex operators, paying particular attention to the signs of the intersection angles. We argue that the masses of the lightest states scale as M^2 ~ θM^2_s and can thus be parametrically smaller than the string scale. Relying on previous analyses, we compute scattering amplitudes of massless 'twisted' open strings and study their factorization, confirming the presence of the light massive states as sub-dominant poles in one of the channels.

Mass-deformed Brane Tilings

We study renormalization group flows among N=1 SCFTs realized on the worldvolume of D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau singularities, thus admitting a brane tiling description. The flows are triggered by masses for adjoint or vector-like pairs of bifundamentals and are generalizations of the Klebanov-Witten construction of the N=1 theory for the conifold starting from the N=2 theory for the C^2/Z_2 orbifold. In order to preserve the toric condition pairs of masses with opposite signs have to be switched on. We offer a geometric interpretation of the flows as complex deformations of the Calabi-Yau singularity preserving the toric condition. For orbifolds, we support this interpretation by an explicit string amplitude computation of the gauge invariant mass terms generated by imaginary self-dual 3-form fluxes in the twisted sector. In agreement with the holographic a-theorem, the volume of the Sasaki-Einstein 5-base of the Calabi-Yau cone always increases along the flow.

More on Soft Theorems: Trees, Loops and Strings

We study soft theorems in a broader context, addressing their fate at loop level and their universality in effective field theories and string theory. We argue that for gauge theories in the planar limit, loop-level soft gluon theorems can be made manifest already at the integrand level. In particular, we show that the planar integrand for N=4 SYM satisfies the tree-level soft theorem to all orders in perturbation theory and provide strong evidence to this effect for integrands in N<4 SYM. We consider soft theorems for non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and gravity, and show the validity of integrand soft theorem, while loop corrections to the integrated soft theorems are intimately tied to the presence of conformal anomalies. We then address the question of universality of the soft theorems for various theories. In effective field theories with F^3 and R^3 interactions, the soft theorems are not modified. However for gravity theories with R^2 phi interactions, the sub-sub-leading order soft graviton theorem, which is beyond what is implied by the extended BMS symmetry, requires modifications at tree level for non-supersymmetric theories, and at loop level for N<5 supergravity due to anomalies. Finally, for superstring amplitudes at finite alpha', via explicit calculation for lower-point examples as well as world-sheet OPE analysis for arbitrary multiplicity, we show that the superstring amplitudes satisfy the same soft theorem as its field-theory counterpart. This is no longer true for bosonic closed strings due to the presence of R^2 phi interactions.

Neutron Majorana mass from exotic instantons

We show how a Majorana mass for the Neutron could result from non-perturbative quantum gravity effects peculiar to string theory. In particular, "exotic instantons" in un-oriented string compactifications with D-branes extending the (supersymmetric) standard model could indirectly produce an effective operator delta{m} n^t n+h.c. In a specific model with an extra vector-like pair of `quarks', acquiring a large mass proportional to the string mass scale (exponentially suppressed by a function of the string moduli fields), delta{m} can turn out to be as low as 10^{-24}-10^{-25} eV. The induced neutron-antineutron oscillations could take place with a time scale tau_{n\bar{n}} > 10^8 s, that could be tested by the next generation of experiments. On the other hand, proton decay and FCNC's are automatically strongly suppressed and are compatible with the current experimental limits. Depending on the number of brane intersections, the model may also lead to the generation of Majorana masses for R-handed neutrini. Our proposal could also suggest neutron-neutralino or neutron-axino oscillations, with implications in UCN, Dark Matter Direct Detection, UHECR and Neutron-Antineutron oscillations. This suggests to improve the limits on neutron-antineutron oscillations, as a possible test of string theory and quantum gravity.

Simplifying instanton corrections to N=4 SYM correlators

We compute instanton corrections to non-minimal correlation functions of chiral primary operators in the N=4 super Yang-Mills super-current multiplet. Using a representation in terms of Mellin integrals, we find that these corrections can be written as conformal integrals in AdS_5 times certain "kinematic" prefactors that are independent of the instanton moduli. We then consider the consecutive, pairwise light-like limit x_{i, i+1}^2 -> 0 of such correlators, and prove that the ratio between the instanton contribution and the corresponding tree-level expression vanishes in this limit. We also speculate on the extension to the non-perturbative level of the proposed duality with polygonal Wilson loops and briefly discuss its potential implications for scattering amplitudes.

Unoriented Quivers with Flavour

We discuss unoriented quivers with flavour that arise from D3-branes at local orbifold singularities, in the presence of Omega-planes and non-compact D7-branes. We produce a wide class of unoriented quiver gauge theories, including new instances of N=1 superconformal theories. We then consider unoriented D-brane instanton corrections of both `gauge' and `exotic' kinds. In particular, we show that conformal symmetry can be dynamically broken via the generation of exotic superpotentials. Finally we discuss aspects of the recently proposed N=1 remnant of N=4 S-duality. We identify new candidate dual pairs for the C^3/Z_n series of unoriented quiver gauge theories with n odd.

Freezing E3-brane instantons with fluxes

E3-instantons that generate non-perturbative superpotentials in IIB N=1 compactifications are more frequent than currently believed. Worldvolume fluxes will typically lift the E3-brane geometric moduli and their fermionic superpartners, leaving only the two required universal fermionic zero-modes. We consistently incorporate SL(2, Z) monodromies and world-volume fluxes in the effective theory of the E3-brane fermions and study the resulting zero-mode spectrum, highlighting the relation between F-theory and perturbative IIB results. This leads us to a IIB derivation of the index for generation of superpotential terms, which reproduces and generalizes available results. Furthermore, we show how worldvolume fluxes can be explicitly constructed in a one-modulus compactification, such that an E3-instanton has exactly two fermonic zero-modes. This construction is readily applicable to numerous scenarios.

Heterotic T-folds with a small number of neutral moduli

We discuss non-geometric supersymmetric heterotic string models in D=4, in the framework of the free fermionic construction. We perform a systematic scan of models with four a priori left-right asymmetric Z_2 projections and shifts. We analyze some 2^{20} models, identifying 18 inequivalent classes and addressing variants generated by discrete torsions. They do not contain geometrical or trivial neutral moduli, apart from the dilaton. However, we show the existence of flat directions in the form of exactly marginal deformations and identify patterns of symmetry breaking where product gauge groups, realized at level one, are broken to their diagonal at higher level. We also describe an "inverse Gepner map" from Heterotic to Type II models that could be used, in certain non geometric settings, to define "effective" topological invariants.

Magnetized E3-brane instantons in F-theory

We discuss E3-brane instantons in N=1 F-theory compactifications to four dimensions and clarify the structure of E3-E3 zero modes for general world-volume fluxes. We consistently incorporate SL(2,Z) monodromies and highlight the relation between F-theory and perturbative IIB results. We explicitly show that world-volume fluxes can lift certain fermionic zero-modes, whose presence would prevent the generation of non-perturbative superpotential terms, and we discuss in detail the geometric interpretation of the zero-mode lifting mechanism. We provide a IIB derivation of the index for generation of superpotential terms and of its modification to include world-volume fluxes, which reproduces and generalizes available results. We apply our general analysis to the explicit, though very simple, example of compactification on P^3 and its orientifold weak-coupling limit. In particular, we provide an example in which a non-rigid divisor with fluxes contributes to the superpotential.

Unoriented D-brane instantons

We give a pedagogical introduction to D-brane instanton effects in vacuum configurations with open and unoriented strings. We focus on quiver gauge theories for unoriented D-branes at orbifold singularities and describe in some detail the Z_3 case, where both `gauge' and `exotic' instantons can generate non-perturbative super potentials, and the Z_5 case, where supersymmetry breaking may arise from the combined effect of `gauge' instantons and a FI D-term.

On closed-string twist-field correlators and their open-string descendants

In a recent paper we have proposed the possibility that the lightest massive string states could be identified with open strings living at intersections of D-branes forming small angles. In this note, we reconsider the relevant twist-field correlation functions and perform the analysis of the sub-dominant physical poles in the various channels. Our derivation is new in that it is based on the algebraic procedure for the construction of open string models starting from their closed-string `parents' rather than on the stress-tensor method. We also indicate possible generalizations and diverse applications of our approach.

Observations on Arithmetic Invariants and U-Duality Orbits in N =8 Supergravity

We establish a relation between time-like, light-like and space-like orbits of the non-compact E{7(7)}(R)symmetry and discrete E{7(7)}(Z) invariants. We discuss the U-duality invariant formula for the degeneracy of states d(Q) which in the approximation of large occupation numbers reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for regular black holes with AdS_2 horizon. We explain why the states belonging to light-like orbits, corresponding to classical solutions of "light black holes with null singularity", decouple from the corresponding index. We also present a separate U-duality invariant formula for the class of light-like orbits specified by discrete E{7(7)}(Z) invariants. We conclude that the present study of the non-perturbative sector of the theory does not reveal any contradiction with the conjectured all-loop perturbative finiteness of D=4 N=8 supergravity.

On Exact Symmetries and Massless Vectors in Holographic Flows and other Flux Vacua

We analyze the isometries of Type IIB flux vacua based on the Papadopolous-Tseytlin ansatz and identify the related massless bulk vector fields. To this end we devise a general ansatz, valid in any flux compactification, for the fluctuations of the metric and p-forms that diagonalizes the coupled equations. We then illustrate the procedure in the simple case of holographic flows driven by the RR 3-form flux only. Specifically we study the fate of the isometries of the Maldacena-Nunez solution associated to wrapped D5-branes.

We then study on-shell tri-linear couplings of these Higher Spin states and confirm that BPS states with arbitrary spin cannot decay into lower spin states in perturbation theory. Finally, we consider scattering of vector bosons off higher spin BPS states and extract form factors and polarization effects in various limits.

Pair Production of small Black Holes in Heterotic String Theories

We study pair production of small BPS BH's in heterotic strings compactified on tori and in the FHSV model. After recalling the identification of small BH's in the perturbative BPS spectrum, we compute the tree-level amplitudes for processes initiated by massless vector bosons or gravitons. We then analyze the resulting cross sections in terms of energy and angular distributions. Finally, we briefly comment on scenari with large extra dimensions and on generalizations of our results to non-BPS, non-extremal and rotating BH's.

Perturbative and Non-perturbative N =8 Supergravity

We study extremal black holes, their ADM mass and area of the horizon in N = 8 supergravity. Contrary to intuition gained from N = 2, 4 theories, in N = 8 supergravity BPS states may become massless only at the boundary of moduli space. We show that stringy states described in [1], which have no mass gap and survive in the toroidal compactification in addition to massless states of perturbative N = 8 supergravity, display a null singularity in four-dimensional space-time, when viewed as solutions of N = 8 Einstein equations. We analyze known methods of resolving such singularities and explain why they do not work in D=4, N = 8 supergravity. We discuss possible implications for the issue of UV finiteness of the four-dimensional N = 8 perturbation theory.

Precision Spectroscopy and Higher Spin symmetry in the ABJM model

We revisit Kaluza-Klein compactification of 11-d supergravity on S^7/Z_k using group theory techniques that may find application in other flux vacua with internal coset spaces. Among the SO(2) neutral states, we identify marginal deformations and fields that couple to the recently discussed world-sheet instanton of Type IIA on CP^3. We also discuss charged states, dual to monopole operators, and the Z_k projection of the Osp(4|8) singleton and its tensor products. In particular, we show that the doubleton spectrum may account for N=6 higher spin symmetry enhancement in the limit of vanishing 't Hooft coupling in the boundary Chern-Simons theory.

Notes on unoriented D-brane instantons

In the first lecture, we discuss basic aspects of worldsheet and penta-brane instantons as well as (unoriented) D-brane instantons, which is our main focus here, and threshold corrections to BPS-saturated couplings. The second lecture is devoted to non-perturbative superpotentials generated by `gauge' and `exotic' instantons living on D3-branes at orientifold singularities. In the third lecture we discuss the interplay between worldsheet and D-string instantons on $T^4/Z_2$. We focus on a 4-fermi amplitude, give Heterotic and perturbative Type I descriptions, and offer a multi D-string instanton interpretation. We conclude with possible interesting developments.

On gauge couplings and thresholds in Type I Gepner models and otherwise

We derive general formulae for tree level gauge couplings and their one-loop thresholds in Type I models based on genuinely interacting internal N=2 SCFT's, such as Gepner models. We illustrate our procedure in the simple yet non-trivial instance of the Quintic. We briefly address the phenomenologically more relevant issue of determining the Weinberg angle in this class of models. Finally we initiate the study of the correspondence between `magnetized' or `coisotropic' D-branes in Gepner models and twisted representations of the underlying N=2 SCA.

Massive higher spins and holography

We review recent progress towards the understanding of higher spin gauge symmetry breaking in AdS space from a holographic vantage point. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, N=4 SYM theory at vanishing coupling constant should be dual to a theory in AdS which exhibits higher spin gauge symmetry enhancement. When the SYM coupling is non-zero, all but a handful of HS currents are violated by anomalies, and correspondingly local higher spin symmetry in the bulk gets spontaneously broken. In agreement with previous results and holographic expectations, we find that, barring one notable exception (spin 1 eating spin 0), the Goldstone modes responsible for HS symmetry breaking in AdS have non-vanishing mass even in the limit in which the gauge symmetry is restored. We show that spontaneous breaking a' la Stueckelberg implies that the mass of the relevant spin s'=s-1 Goldstone field is exactly the one predicted by the correspondence.

Higher Spin Symmetry and N=4 SYM

We assemble the spectrum of single-trace operators in free N=4 SU(N) SYM theory into irreducible representations of the Higher Spin symmetry algebra hs(2,2|4). Higher Spin representations or YT-pletons are associated to Young tableaux (YT) corresponding to representations of the symmetric group compatible with the cyclicity of color traces. After turning on interactions, YT-pletons decompose into infinite towers of representations of the superconformal algebra PSU(2,2|4) and anomalous dimensions are generated. We work out the decompositions of tripletons with respect to the N=4 superconformal algebra PSU(2,2|4) and compute their one anomalous dimensions at large N. We then focus on operators/states sitting in semishort superconformal multiplets. By passing them through a semishort-sieve that removes superdescendants, we derive compact expressions for the partition function of semishort primaries.

Holographic three-point functions: one step beyond the tradition

Within the program of holographic renormalization, we discuss the computation of three-point correlation functions along RG flows. We illustrate the procedure in two simple cases. In an RG flow to the Coulomb branch of N=4 SYM theory we derive a compact and finite expression for the three-point function of lowest CPO's dual to inert scalars. In the GPPZ flow, that captures some features of N=1 SYM theory, we compute the three-point function with insertion of two inert scalars and one active scalar that mixes with the stress tensor. By amputating the external legs at the mass poles we extract the trilinear coupling of the corresponding superglueballs. Finally we outline the procedure for computing three-point functions with insertions of the stress tensor as well as of (broken) R-symmetry currents.

On stringy AdS_5 x S^5 and higher spin holography

We derive the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein descendants of string excitations on AdS_5 x S^5. String states are organized in long multiplets of the AdS supergroup SU(2,2|4,R) with a rich pattern of shortenings at the higher spin enhancement point λ=0. The string states holographically dual to the higher spin currents of SYM theory in the strict zero coupling limit are identified together with the corresponding Goldstone particles responsible for the Higgsing of the higher spin symmetry at λ\neq 0. Exploiting higher spin symmetry we propose a very simple yet effective mass formula and establish a one-to-one correspondence between the complete spectrum of Δ_0 <= 4 string states and relevant/marginal single-trace deformations in N=4 SYM theory at large N. To this end, we describe how to efficiently enumerate scaling operators in `free' YM theory, with the inclusion of fermionic `letters', by resorting to Polya theory. Comparison between the spectra of 1/4-BPS states is also presented. Finally, we discuss how to organize the spectrum of N=4 SYM theory in SU(2,2|4,R) supermultiplets by means of some kind of `Eratostenes's sieve'.

Surprises from the Resolution of Operator Mixing in N = 4 SYM

We reexamine the problem of operator mixing in N = 4 SYM. Particular attention is paid to the correct definition of composite gauge invariant local operators, which is necessary for the computation of their anomalous dimensions beyond lowest order. As an application we reconsider the case of operators with naive dimension Delta_0=4, already studied in the literature. Stringent constraints from the resummation of logarithms in power behaviours are exploited and the role of the generalized N = 4 Konishi anomaly in the mixing with operators involving fermions is discussed. A general method for the explicit (numerical) resolution of the operator mixing and the computation of anomalous dimensions is proposed. We then resolve the order g^2 mixing for the 15 (purely scalar) singlet operators of naive dimension Δ_0=6. Rather surprisingly we find one isolated operator which has a vanishing anomalous dimension up to order g^4, belonging to an apparently long multiplet. We also solve the order g^2 mixing for the 26 operators belonging to the representation 20' of SU(4). We find an operator with the same one-loop anomalous dimension as the Konishi multiplet.

Holographic Renormalization

We systematically develop the procedure of holographic renormalization for RG flows dual to asymptotically AdS domain walls. All divergences of the on-shell bulk action can be cancelled by adding covariant local boundary counterterms determined by the near-boundary behavior of bulk fields. This procedure defines a renormalized action from which correlation functions are obtained by functional differentiation. The correlators are finite and well behaved at coincident points. Ward identities, corrected for anomalies, are satisfied. The correlators depend on parts of the solution of the bulk field equations which are not determined by near-boundary analysis. In principle a full nonlinear solution is required, but one can solve linearized fluctuation equations to define a bulk-to-boundary propagator from which 2-point correlation functions are easily obtained. We carry out the procedure explicitly for two known RG flows obtained from the maximal gauged D=5 supergravity theory, obtaining new results on correlators of vector currents and related scalar operators and giving further details on a recent analysis of the stress tensor sector.

Properties of the Konishi multiplet in N=4 SYM theory

We study perturbative and non-perturbative properties of the Konishi multiplet in N=4 SYM theory in D=4 dimensions. We compute two-, three- and four-point Green functions with single and multiple insertions of the lowest component of the multiplet, and of the lowest component of the supercurrent multiplet. These computations require a proper definition of the renormalized operator and lead to an independent derivation of its anomalous dimension. The O(g^2) value found in this way is in agreement with previous results. We also find that instanton contributions to the above correlators vanish. From our results we are able to identify some of the lowest dimensional gauge-invariant composite operators contributing to the OPE of the correlation functions we have computed. We thus confirm the existence of an operator belonging to the representation 20', which has vanishing anomalous dimension at order g^2 and g^4 in perturbation theory as well as at the non-perturbative level, despite the fact that it does not obey any of the known shortening conditions.

A Note on Toroidal Compactifications of the Type I Superstring and Other Superstring Vacuum Configurations with 16 Supercharges

We show that various disconnected components of the moduli space of superstring vacua with 16 supercharges admit a rationale in terms of BPS un-orientifolds, i.e. type I toroidal compactifications with constant non-vanishing but quantized vacuum expectation values of the NS-NS antisymmetric tensor. These include various heterotic vacua with reduced rank, known as CHL strings, and their dual type II (2,2) superstrings below D=6. Type I vacua without open strings allow for an interpretation of several disconnected components with N_V=10-D. An adiabatic argument relates these unconventional type I superstrings to type II (4,0) superstrings without D-branes. The latter are connected by U-duality below D=6 to type II (2,2) superstrings. We also comment on the relation between some of these vacua and compactifications of the putative M-theory on unorientable manifolds as well as F-theory vacua.

Open Strings on the Neveu-Schwarz Pentabrane

We analyze the propagation of open and unoriented strings on the Neveu-Schwarz pentabrane (N5-brane) along the lines of a similar analysis for the SU(2) WZNW models. We discuss the two classes of open descendants of the diagonal models and a series of Z_2 projected models which exist only for even values of the level k and correspond to branes at D-type orbifold singularities. The resulting configurations of branes and planes are T-dual to those relevant to the study of dualities in super Yang-Mills theories. The association of Chan-Paton factors to D-brane multiplicities is possible in the semi-classical limit k -> infinity, but due to strong curvature effects is unclear for finite k. We show that the introduction of a magnetic field implies a twist of the SU(2) current algebra in the open-string sector leading to spacetime supersymmetry breaking.

Explicit Construction of Yang-Mills Instantons on ALE Spaces

We describe the explicit construction of Yang-Mills instantons on ALE spaces, following the work of Kronheimer and Nakajima. For multicenter ALE metrics, we determine the abelian instanton connections which are needed for the construction in the non-abelian case. We compute the partition function of Maxwell theories on ALE manifolds and comment on the issue of electromagnetic duality. We discuss the topological characterization of the instanton bundles as well as the identification of their moduli spaces. We generalize the 't Hooft ansatz to SU(2) instantons on ALE spaces and on other hyper-Kahler manifolds. Specializing to the Eguchi-Hanson gravitational background, we explicitly solve the ADHM equations for SU(2) gauge bundles with second Chern class 1/2, 1 and 3/2.

Twelve-Dimensional Aspects of Four-Dimensional N=1 Type I Vacua

Four-dimensional supergravity theories are reinterpreted in a 12-dimensional F-theory framework. The O(8) symmetry of N=8 supergravity is related to a reduction of F-theory on T_8, with the seventy scalars formally associated, by O(8) triality, to a fully compactified four-form A_4. For the N=1 type I model recently obtained from the type IIB string on the Z orbifold, we identify the Kähler manifold of the untwisted scalars in the unoriented closed sector with the generalized Siegel upper-half plane Sp(8,R)/(SU(4) \times U(1)). The SU(4) factor reflects the holonomy group of Calabi-Yau fourfolds.

Deep Inelastic Scattering in Improved Lattice QCD. II. The second moment of structure functions

In this paper we present the 1-loop perturbative computation of the renormalization constants and mixing coefficients of the lattice quark operators of rank three whose hadronic elements enter in the determination of the second moment of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) structure functions. We have employed in our calculations the nearest-neighbor improved ``clover-leaf'' lattice QCD action. The interest of using this action in Monte Carlo simulations lies in the fact that all terms which in the continuum limit are effectively of order $a$ ($a$ being the lattice spacing) have been demonstrated to be absent from on-shell hadronic lattice matrix elements. We have limited our computations to the quenched case, in which quark operators do not mix with gluon operators. We have studied the transformation properties under the hypercubic group of the operators up to the rank five (which are related to moments up to the fourth of DIS structure functions), and we discuss the choice of the operators considered in this paper together with the feasibility of lattice computations for operators of higher ranks. To perform the huge amount of calculations required for the evaluation of all the relevant Feynman diagrams, we have extensively used the symbolic manipulation languages Schoonschip and Form.
