Experimental test of Non-Commutative Quantum Gravity by VIP-2 Lead

Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) violations induced by space-time non-commutativity, a class of universality for several models of Quantum Gravity, are investigated by the VIP-2 Lead experiment at the Gran Sasso underground National Laboratory of INFN. The VIP-2 Lead experimental bound on the non-commutative space-time scale $Λ$ excludes $θ$-Poincaré far above the Planck scale for non vanishing ``electric-like" components of $θ_{μν}$, and up to $6.9 \cdot 10^{-2}$ Planck scales if they are null. Therefore, this new bound represents the tightest one so far provided by atomic transitions tests. This result strongly motivates high sensitivity underground X-ray measurements as critical tests of Quantum Gravity and of the very microscopic space-time structure.

Gravitational-Wave Signatures of Chiral-Symmetric Technicolor

A chiral-symmetric technicolor model successfully reconciles the tension between electroweak precision tests and traditional technicolor models. Focusing on its simplest realization preserving the conventional Higgs mechanism, we study its primordial gravitational wave signatures originating from first order phase transitions in the early Universe. We found that abundant phase transition patterns arise from a physically viable parameter space. Besides, we have also found gravitational wave signals possibly visible by future experiments, such as LISA, BBO and u-DECIGO. Our results stress the importance of gravitational wave detectors in exploring new physics complementary to ground colliders in the multi-messenger astronomy era.

Sequential measurements, TQFTs, and TQNNs

We introduce novel methods for implementing generic quantum information within a scale-free architecture. For a given observable system, we show how observational outcomes are taken to be finite bit strings induced by measurement operators derived from a holographic screen bounding the system. In this framework, measurements of identified systems with respect to defined reference frames are represented by semantically-regulated information flows through distributed systems of finite sets of binary-valued Barwise-Seligman classifiers. Specifically, we construct a functor from the category of cone-cocone diagrams (CCCDs) over finite sets of classifiers, to the category of finite cobordisms of Hilbert spaces. We show that finite CCCDs provide a generic representation of finite quantum reference frames (QRFs). Hence the constructed functor shows how sequential finite measurements can induce TQFTs. The only requirement is that each measurement in a sequence, by itself, satisfies Bayesian coherence, hence that the probabilities it assigns satisfy the Kolmogorov axioms. We extend the analysis so develop topological quantum neural networks (TQNNs), which enable machine learning with functorial evolution of quantum neural 2-complexes (TQN2Cs) governed by TQFTs amplitudes, and resort to the Atiyah-Singer theorems in order to classify topological data processed by TQN2Cs. We then comment about the quiver representation of CCCDs and generalized spin-networks, a basis of the Hilbert spaces of both TQNNs and TQFTs. We finally review potential implementations of this framework in solid state physics and suggest applications to quantum simulation and biological information processing.

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) Science Book (2021 Edition)

Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. The LHAASO Collaboration organized an editorial working group and finished all editorial work of this science book, to summarize the instrumental features and outline the prospects of scientific researches with the LHAASO experiment.

Contactless generation and trapping of hydrodynamic knots in sessile droplets by acoustic screw dislocations

Hydrodynamics knots are not only promising elementary structures to study mass and momentum transfer in turbulent flows, but also potent analogs for other topological problems arising in particle physics. However, experimental studies of knots are highly challenging due to the limited control over knot generation and difficult observation of the resulting fast-paced multiscale flow evolution. In this paper, we propose using acoustic streaming to tie hydrodynamic knots in fluids. The method is contactless, almost instantaneous and is relatively insensitive to viscosity. Importantly, it allows starting from quite arbitrary three dimensional flow structures without relying on external boundary conditions. We demonstrate our approach by using an acoustic screw dislocation to tie a knot in a sessile droplet. We observe an inversion of the knot chirality (measured by the hydrodynamic helicity) as the topological charge of the screw dislocation is increased. Combined with recent progress in acoustic field synthesis, this work opens a window to study more complex hydrodynamic knot topologies at a broader range of space and timescales.

Critical Insight into the Cosmological Sector of Loop Quantum Gravity

This article sheds new light on the problem of cosmological reduction in Loop Quantum Gravity. We critically analyze Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity -- an attempt to extract the cosmological sector of the full theory. We reconsider the reduction procedure applied to the states of the kinematical Hilbert space, developing a comparative analysis with previous efforts in the literature. We show that the constraints of the model were formerly instantiated in an inconsistent fashion, leading to an overconstrained dynamics and an ill-defined Hilbert space. We then scrutinize alternative implementations of symmetry-reduction. While remaining unaffected by the shortcomings encountered in Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity, these latter procedures bridge the gap between the full theory and former endeavors in Loop Quantum Cosmology.

Generalized Holographic Principle, Gauge Invariance and the Emergence of Gravity a la Wilczek

We show that a generalized version of the holographic principle can be derived from the Hamiltonian description of information flow within a quantum system that maintains a separable state. We then show that this generalized holographic principle entails a general principle of gauge invariance. When this is realized in an ambient Lorentzian space-time, gauge invariance under the Poincare group is immediately achieved. We apply this pathway to retrieve the action of gravity. The latter is cast a la Wilczek through a similar formulation derived by MacDowell and Mansouri, which involves the representation theory of the Lie groups SO(3,2) and SO(4,1).

Non Bunch Davies group coherent states, and their quantum signatures in CMB observables

We approach the problem of finding generalized states for matter fields in a de Sitter universe, moving from a group theoretical point of view. This has profound consequences for cosmological perturbations during inflation, and for other CMB observables. In a systematic derivation, we find all the allowed generalities that such a state may have, within the requirements of coherent states. Furthermore, we show their relation to the more familiar excited initial states, often used in inflation.

Probing new physics with multi-vacua quantum tunnelings beyond standard model through gravitational waves

We report on a novel phenomenon of particle cosmology, which features specific cosmological phase transitions via quantum tunnelings through multiple vacua. The latter is inspired by the axiverse ideas and enables us to probe the associated new physics models through a potential observation of specific patterns in the stochastic gravitational waves background. Multiple vacua may induce the nucleation of co-existing bubbles over the phase transition epoch, hence enhancing the overall process of bubbles' nucleation. Our detailed analysis of semi-analytical and numerical solutions to the bounce equations of the path integral in three vacua case has enabled us to determine the existence of three instanton solutions. This new mechanism of cosmological phase transitions clearly predicts a possibly sizeable new source of gravitational waves, with its energy spectrum being featured with particular patterns, which could be probed by the future gravitational wave interferometers.

Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity with matter: eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian operator in isotropic cosmology

Introducing a new method, we demonstrate how the action of reduced operators can be derived without resorting to a recoupling theory and how they exactly reproduce the results obtained in the standard approach of Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity (QRLG). This is particularly relevant while dealing with volume operator when dealing with the coupling of matter fields to gravity. Apart from reinforcing the close link between QRLG and loop quantum cosmology (LQC), this procedure also sheds new light on the issue of how to extract the continuum limit, without resorting to the large-$j$ expansion, thereby pointing towards a new approach to tackle this problem.

Analogous BMS Symmetry in QED and Quantum Anomaly in Dirac and Weyl Semimetals

We show that the asymptotic infinite dimensional enlarged gauge symmetries constructed for QED are anomalous in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. This symmetry is particularly important in particle physics for its analogy with the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries in gravity, as well as for its connection with QED soft IR theorems. This leads to observable effects, because of the induction of a new current in the material, which carries a memory of the BMS symmetry precursor.

Conformal Bootstrap in dS/CFT and Topological Quantum Gravity

We show that the correspondence among $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$, the 1D Schwarzian Model, Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and 2+1D Topological Quantum Gravity can be extended to the case of $dS_{3}/CFT_{2}$. The $R$-matrix, related to the gravitational scattering amplitude near the horizon of $dS_{3}$ black hole, corresponds (on the side of the holographic projection) to a crossing kernel in the Schwarzian Model. The $R$-matrix is related to the 6j-symbol of SU$(1,1)$. We also find that in the Euclidean $dS_{3}$ a new Kac-Moody symmetry of instantons emerges out. We dub these new solutions {\it Kac-Moodions}. A one-to-one correspondence of Kac-Moodion levels and SU$(2)$ spin representations is established. Every instanton then corresponds to spin representations deployed in Topological Quantum Gravity. The instantons are directly connected to the Black Hole entropy, as punctures on its horizon. This strongly supports the recent proposal, in arXiv:1707.00347, that a Kac-Moody symmetry of gravitational instantons is related to the black hole information processing. We also comment on a further correspondence that can be established between the Schwarzian Model and non-commutative spacetimes in 2+1D, passing through the equivalence with Topological Quantum Gravity with cosmological constant, in the limit when the latter vanishes.

Gravitational Instability of Exotic Compact Objects

Exotic compact objects with physical surfaces a Planckian distance away from where the horizon would have been are inspired in quantum gravity. Most of these objects are defined by a classical spacetime metric, such as boson stars, gravastars and wormholes. We show that these classical objects are gravitationally unstable because accretion of ordinary and dark matter, and gravitational waves forces them to collapse to a black hole by the Hoop conjecture. To avoid collapse, their surface must be a macroscopic distance away from the horizon or they must violate the null energy condition.

A new look at scalar perturbations in loop quantum cosmology: (un)deformed algebra approach using self dual variables

Scalar cosmological perturbations in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) is revisited in a covariant manner, using self dual Ashtekar variables. For real-valued Ashtekar-Barbero variables, this `deformed algebra' approach has been shown to implement holonomy corrections from loop quantum gravity (LQG) in a consistent manner, albeit deforming the algebra of modified constraints in the process. This deformation has serious conceptual ramifications, not the least of them being an effective `signature-change' in the deep quantum regime. In this paper, we show that working with self dual variables lead to an undeformed algebra of hypersurface deformations, even after including holonomy corrections in the effective constraints. As a necessary consequence, the diffeomorphism constraint picks up non-perturbative quantum corrections thus hinting at a modification of the underlying space-time structure, a novel ingredient compared to the usual treatment of (spatial) diffeomorphisms in LQG. This work extends a similar result obtained in the context of spherically symmetric gravity coupled to a scalar field, suggesting that self dual variables could be better suited than their real counterparts to treat inhomogeneous LQG models.

A note on the semiclassicality of cosmological perturbations

Moving from the consideration that matter fields must be treated in terms of their fundamental quantum counterparts, we show straightforward arguments, within the framework of ordinary quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, in order to convince readers that cosmological perturbations must be addressed in term of the semiclassical limit of the expectation value of quantum fields. We first take into account cosmological perturbations originated by a quantum scalar field, and then extend our treatment in order to account for the expectation values of bilinears of Dirac fermion fields. The latter can indeed transform as scalar quantities under diffeomorphisms, as well as all the other bilinear of the Dirac fields that belong to the Clifford algebra. This is the first of a series of works that is intended to prove that cosmological quantum perturbations can actually be accounted for in terms of Dirac fermion fields, which must be treated as fundamental quantum objects, and their dynamics.

A Unified picture of Dark Matter and Dark Energy from Invisible QCD

It has been shown in a companion paper that the late time acceleration of the universe can be accounted for by an extension of the QCD color to a $SU(3)$ invisible sector (IQCD). In this work we discuss a unified framework such the scale of dark chiral-breaking dictates both the accelerated expansion of the universe, and the origin of dark matter. We find that the strong and gravitational dynamics of dark quarks and gluons evolve to eventually form exotic dark stars. We discuss the dynamical complexity of these dark compact objects in light of dark big bang nucleosynthesis. We argue how IQCD favors a halo composed of very compact dark neutron stars, strange/quark stars and black holes, with masses $M_{MACHO}< 10^{-7}M_{\odot}$. This avoids limit from MACHO and EROS collaborations as well as limit from clusters. We also discuss possible phenomenological implications in dark matter searches. We argue that dark supernovae and dark binaries can emit very peculiar gravitational waves signal testable by the LIGO/VIRGO collaboration and future projects dedicated to these aspects.

Bouncing cosmologies with dark matter and dark energy

We review matter bounce scenarios where the matter content is dark matter and dark energy. These cosmologies predict a nearly scale-invariant power spectrum with a slightly red tilt for scalar perturbations and a small tensor-to-scalar ratio. Importantly, these models predict a positive running of the scalar index, contrary to the predictions of the simplest inflationary and ekpyrotic models, and hence could potentially be falsified by future observations. We also review how bouncing cosmological space-times can arise in theories where either the Einstein equations are modified or where matter fields that violate the null energy condition are included.

Planck-scale-modified dispersion relations in FRW spacetime

In recent years Planck-scale modifications of the dispersion relation have been attracting increasing interest also from the viewpoint of possible applications in astrophysics and cosmology, where spacetime curvature cannot be neglected. Nonetheless the interplay between Planck-scale effects and spacetime curvature is still poorly understood, particularly in cases where curvature is not constant. These challenges have been so far postponed by relying on an ansatz, first introduced by Jacob and Piran. We here propose a general strategy of analysis of the effects of modifications of dispersion relation in FRW spacetimes, applicable both to cases where the relativistic equivalence of frames is spoiled ("preferred-frame scenarios") and to the alternative possibility of "DSR-relativistic theories", theories that are fully relativistic but with relativistic laws deformed so that the modified dispersion relation is observer independent. We show that the Jacob-Piran ansatz implicitly assumes that spacetime translations are not affected by the Planck-scale, while under rather general conditions the same Planck-scale quantum-spacetime structures producing modifications of the dispersion relation also affect translations. Through the explicit analysis of one of the effects produced by modifications of the dispersion relation, an effect amounting to Planck-scale corrections to travel times, we show that our concerns are not merely conceptual but rather can have significant quantitative implications.

Dynamics of Gauge Field Inflation

We analyze the existence and stability of dynamical attractor solutions for cosmological inflation driven by the coupling between fermions and a gauge field. Assuming a spatially homogeneous and isotropic gauge field and fermion current, the interacting fermion equation of motion reduces to that of a free fermion up to a phase shift. Consistency of the model is ensured via the Stuckelberg mechanism. We prove the existence of exactly one stable solution, and demonstrate the stability numerically. Inflation arises without fine tuning, and does not require postulating any effective potential or non-standard coupling.

Fermi-bounce Cosmology and scale invariant power-spectrum

We develop a non-singular bouncing cosmology using a non-trivial coupling of general relativity to fermionic fields. The usual Big Bang singularity is avoided thanks to a negative energy density contribution from the fermions. Our theory is ghost-free since the fermionic operator that generates the bounce is equivalent to torsion, which has no kinetic terms. The physical system consists of standard general relativity plus a topological sector for gravity, and fermionic matter described by Dirac fields with a non-minimal coupling. We show that a scale invariant power-spectrum generated in the contracting phase can be recovered by suitable choices of fermion number density and bare mass, thus providing a possible alternative to the inflationary scenario.

Fermi-bounce cosmology and the fermion curvaton mechanism

A nonsingular bouncing cosmology can be achieved by introducing a fermion field with BCS condensation occurring at high energy scales. In this paper we are able to dilute the anisotropic stress near the bounce by means of releasing the gap energy density near the phase transition between the radiation and condensate states. In order to explain the nearly scale-invariant CMB spectrum, another fermion field is required. We investigate one possible curvaton mechanism by involving one another fermion field without condensation where the mass is lighter than the background field. We show that, by virtue of the fermion curvaton mechanism, our model can satisfy the latest cosmological observations very well, and that the fermion species involved may realize a cosmological see-saw mechanism after one finely tunes model parameters.

Singularity avoidance in classical gravity from four-fermion interaction

We derive the dynamics of the gravitational collapse of a homogeneous and spherically symmetric cloud in a classical set-up endowed with a topological sector of gravity and a non-minimal coupling to fermions. The effective theory consists of the Einstein-Hilbert action plus Dirac fermions interacting through a four-fermion vertex. At the classical level, we obtain the same picture that has been recently studied by some of us within a wide range of effective theories inspired by a super-renormalizable and asymptotically free theory of gravity. The classical singularity is replaced by a bounce, beyond which the cloud re-expands indefinitely. We thus show that, even at a classical level, if we allow for a non-minimal coupling of gravity to fermions, event horizons may never form for a suitable choice of some parameters of the theory.

Chern-Simons Inflation and Baryogenesis

We present a model of inflation based on the interaction between a homogeneous and isotropic configuration of a U(1) gauge field and fermionic charge density $\mathcal{J}_{0}$. The regulated fermionic charge density is generated from a Bunch-Davies vacuum state using the methods of Koksma and Prokopec \cite{Koksma:2009tc}, and is found to redshift as $1/a(η)$. The time-like component of gauge field is sourced by the fermionic charge leading to a growth in the gauge field $A(η)_{0}\sim a(η)$. As a result inflation is dominated by the energy density contained in the gauge field and fermionic charge interaction, $A_{0}\, \mathcal{J}^{0}$, which remains constant during inflation. We also provide a mechanism to generate a net lepton asymmetry. The coupling of a pseudo scalar to the Chern-Simons term converts the gauge field fluctuations into lepton number and all three Sahkarov conditions are satisfied during inflation. Finally, the rapid oscillation of the pseudo scalar field near its minimum thermalizes the gauge field and ends inflation. We provide the necessary initial condition on the gauge field and fermionic charge to simultaneously generate enough e-folds and baryon asymmetry index.

Gravitational origin of the weak interaction's chirality

We present a new unification of the electro-weak and gravitational interactions based on the joining the weak SU(2) gauge fields with the left handed part of the space-time connection, into a single gauge field valued in the complexification of the local Lorentz group. Hence, the weak interactions emerge as the right handed chiral half of the space-time connection, which explains the chirality of the weak interaction. This is possible, because, as shown by Plebanski, Ashtekar, and others, the other chiral half of the space-time connection is enough to code the dynamics of the gravitational degrees of freedom. This unification is achieved within an extension of the Plebanski action previously proposed by one of us. The theory has two phases. A parity symmetric phase yields, as shown by Speziale, a bi-metric theory with eight degrees of freedom: the massless graviton, a massive spin two field and a scalar ghost. Because of the latter this phase is unstable. Parity is broken in a stable phase where the eight degrees of freedom arrange themselves as the massless graviton coupled to an SU(2) triplet of chirally coupled Yang-Mills fields. It is also shown that under this breaking a Dirac fermion expresses itself as a chiral neutrino paired with a scalar field with the quantum numbers of the Higgs.

Inflation in (Super-)renormalizable Gravity

We investigate a (super-)renormalizable and ghost-free theory of gravity, showing that under a natural (exponential) ansatz of the form factor and a suitable truncation it can give rise to the Starobinsky inflationary theory in cosmological frameworks, and thus offering a theoretical justification of its origin. We study the corresponding inflationary evolution and we examine the generation of curvature perturbations, adapting the $f(R)$-like equations in a symmetry-reduced FLRW metric. Furthermore, we analyze how the ultraviolet regime of a simply renormalizable and unitary theory of gravity is also compatible with the Starobinsky action, and hence we show that such a theory could account for an inflationary phase of the Universe in the ultraviolet regime.

Horava-Lifshitz theory as a Fermionic Aether in Ashtekar gravity

We show how Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory appears naturally in the Ashtekar formulation of relativity if one postulates the existence of a fermionic field playing the role of aether. The spatial currents associated with this field must be switched off for the equivalence to work. Therefore the field supplies the preferred frame associated with breaking refoliation (time diffeomorphism) invariance, but obviously the symmetry is only spontaneously broken if the field is dynamic. When Dirac fermions couple to the gravitational field via the Ashtekar variables, the low energy limit of HL gravity, recast in the language of Ashtekar variables, naturally emerges (provided the spatial fermion current identically vanishes). HL gravity can therefore be interpreted as a time-like current, or a Fermi aether, that fills space-time, with the Immirzi parameter, a chiral fermionic coupling, and the fermionic charge density fixing the value of the parameter $λ$ determining HL theory. This reinterpretation sheds light on some features of HL theory, namely its good convergence properties.

The Hidden Quantum Groups Symmetry of Super-renormalizable Gravity

In this paper we consider the relation between the super-renormalizable theories of quantum gravity (SRQG) studied in [arXiv:1110.5249v2, arXiv:1202.0008] and an underlying non-commutativity of spacetime. For one particular super-renormalizable theory we show that at linear level (quadratic in the Lagrangian) the propagator of the theory is the same we obtain starting from a theory of gravity endowed with θ-Poincaré quantum groups of symmetry. Such a theory is over the so called θ-Minkowski non-commuative spacetime. We shed new light on this link and show that among the theories considered in [arXiv:1110.5249v2, arXiv:1202.0008], there exist only one non-local and Lorentz invariant super-renormalizable theory of quantum gravity that can be described in terms of a quantum group symmetry structure. We also emphasize contact with pre-existent works in the literature and discuss preservation of the equivalence principle in our framework.

Coherent states for FLRW space-times in loop quantum gravity

We construct a class of coherent spin-network states that capture proprieties of curved space-times of the Friedmann-Lamaître-Robertson-Walker type on which they are peaked. The data coded by a coherent state are associated to a cellular decomposition of a spatial ($t=$const.) section with dual graph given by the complete five-vertex graph, though the construction can be easily generalized to other graphs. The labels of coherent states are complex $SL(2, \mathbbm{C})$ variables, one for each link of the graph and are computed through a smearing process starting from a continuum extrinsic and intrinsic geometry of the canonical surface. The construction covers both Euclidean and Lorentzian signatures; in the Euclidean case and in the limit of flat space we reproduce the simplicial 4-simplex semiclassical states used in Spin Foams.

Towards a Loop Quantum Gravity and Yang-Mills Unification

We propose a new method of unifying gravity and the Standard Model by introducing a spin-foam model. We realize a unification between an SU(2) Yang-Mills interaction and 3D general relativity by considering a Spin(4) Plebanski action. The theory is quantized a la spin-foam by implementing the analogue of the simplicial constraints for the broken phase of the Spin(4) SO(4) symmetry. A natural 4D extension of the theory is shown. We also present a way to recover 2-point correlation functions between the connections as a first way to implement scattering amplitudes between particle states, aiming to connect Loop Quantum Gravity to new physical predictions.

A brief overview of quantum field theory with deformed symmetries and their relation with quantum gravity

In this letter we outline some reasons for considering a quantum field theory symmetric under quantum groups and we sketch some results obtained with collaborators in the k-Poincare framework. We deal with this latter as a toy model towards an effective and low-energy theory of quantum gravity, the new physically relevant effects of which are Planck-scale suppressed.

Big Bounce in Dipole Cosmology

We derive the cosmological Big Bounce scenario from the dipole approximation of Loop Quantum Gravity. We show that a non-singular evolution takes place for any matter field and that, by considering a massless scalar field as a relational clock for the dynamics, the semi-classical proprieties of an initial state are preserved on the other side of the bounce. This model thus enhances the relation between Loop Quantum Cosmology and the full theory.

Interplay between curvature and Planck-scale effects in astrophysics and cosmology

Several recent studies have considered the implications for astrophysics and cosmology of some possible nonclassical properties of spacetime at the Planck scale. The new effects, such as a Planck-scale-modified energy-momentum (dispersion) relation, are often inferred from the analysis of some quantum versions of Minkowski spacetime, and therefore the relevant estimates depend heavily on the assumption that there could not be significant interplay between Planck-scale and curvature effects. We here scrutinize this assumption, using as guidance a quantum version of de Sitter spacetime with known Inonu-Wigner contraction to a quantum Minkowski spacetime. And we show that, contrary to common (but unsupported) beliefs, the interplay between Planck-scale and curvature effects can be significant. Within our illustrative example, in the Minkowski limit the quantum-geometry deformation parameter is indeed given by the Planck scale, while in the de Sitter picture the parameter of quantization of geometry depends both on the Planck scale and the curvature scalar. For the much-studied case of Planck-scale effects that intervene in the observation of gamma-ray bursts we can estimate the implications of "quantum spacetime curvature" within robust simplifying assumptions. For cosmology at the present stage of the development of the relevant mathematics one cannot go beyond semiheuristic reasoning, and we here propose a candidate approximate description of a quantum FRW geometry, obtained by patching together pieces (with different spacetime curvature) of our quantum de Sitter. This semiheuristic picture, in spite of its limitations, provides rather robust evidence that in the early Universe the interplay between Planck-scale and curvature effects could have been particularly significant.

Testing quantum-spacetime relativity with gamma-ray telescopes

Observations of gamma-ray bursts are being used to test for a momentum dependence of the speed of photons, partly motivated by preliminary results reported in analyses of some quantum-spacetime scenarios. The relationship between time of arrival, momentum of the photon and redshift of the source which is used for these purposes assumes a "breakdown" of relativistic symmetries, meaning that it is a preferred-frame scenario which does not satisfy the Relativity Principle. The alternative hypothesis of a "deformation" of relativistic symmetries, which preserves the Relativity Principle by adopting deformed laws of relativistic transformation between observers, could not so far be tested in gamma-ray-burst observations because it was not known how to formulate it in expanding spacetimes. We here provide such a formulation, and we find that also for the symmetry-deformation scenario the analysis of gamma-ray-burst data take us very close to the desired "Planck-scale sensitivity".

Triangulated Loop Quantum Cosmology: Bianchi IX and inhomogenous perturbations

We develop the "triangulated" version of loop quantum cosmology, recently introduced in the literature. We focus on the "dipole" cosmology, where space is a three-sphere and the triangulation is formed by two tetrahedra. We show that the discrete fiducial connection has a simple and appealing geometrical interpretation and we correct the ansatz on the relation between the model variables and the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker scale factor. The modified ansatz leads to the convergence of the Hamiltonian constraint to the continuum one. We then ask which degrees of freedom are captured by this model. We show that the model is rich enough to describe the (anisotropic) Bianchi IX Universe, and give the explicit relation between the Bianchi IX variables and the variables of the model. We discuss the possibility of using this path in order to define the quantization of the Bianchi IX Universe. The model contains more degrees of freedom than Bianchi IX, and therefore captures some inhomogeneous degrees of freedom as well. Inhomogeneous degrees of freedom can be expanded in representations of the SU(2) Bianchi IX isometry group, and the dipole model captures the lowest integer representation of these, connected to hyper-spherical harmonic of angular momentum j=1.

Heisenberg Evolution in a Quantum Theory of Noncommutative Fields

A quantum theory of noncommutative fields was recently proposed by Carmona, Cortez, Gamboa and Mendez (hep-th/0301248). The implications of the noncommutativity of the fields, intended as the requirements $[ϕ,ϕ^{+}]=θδ^{3}(x-x^{\prime}), [π,π^{+}]=Bδ^{3}(x-x^{\prime}) $, were analyzed on the basis of an analogy with previous results on the so-called ``noncommutative harmonic oscillator construction". Some departures from Lorentz symmetry turned out to play a key role in the emerging framework. We first consider the same hamiltonian proposed in hep-th/0301248, and we show that the theory can be analyzed straightforwardly within the framework of Heisenberg evolution equation without any need of making reference to the ``noncommutative harmonic oscillator construction". We then consider a rather general class of alternative hamiltonians, and we observe that violations of Lorentz invariance are inevitably encountered. These violations must therefore be viewed as intrinsically associated with the proposed type of noncommutativity of fields, rather than as a consequence of a specific choice of Hamiltonian.
