A4-based see-saw model for realistic neutrino masses and mixing

We present an $A4$-based model where neutrino masses arise from a combination of see-saw mechanisms. The model is motivated by several small mixing and mass parameters indicated by the data. These are $θ_{13}$, the solar mass splitting, and the small deviation of $θ_{23}$ from maximal mixing (= $π/4$). We take the above as indications that at some level the small quantities are well-approximated by zero. In particular the mixing angles, to a zero order, should be either 0 or $π/4$. Accordingly, in this model the Type-II see-saw dominates and generates the larger atmospheric mass splitting and sets $θ_{23} = π/4$. The other mixing angles are vanishing as is the solar splitting. We show how the $A4$ assignment for the lepton doublets leads to this form. We also specify the $A4$ properties of the right-handed neutrinos which result in a smaller Type-I see-saw contribution that acts as a perturbation and shifts the angles $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{13}$ into the correct range and the desired value of $Δm^2_{solar}$ is produced. The $A4$ symmetry results in relationships between these quantities as well as with a small deviation of $θ_{23}$ from $π/4$. If the right-handed neutrino mass matrix, $M_R$, is chosen real then there is no leptonic CP-violation and only Normal Ordering is admissible. If $M_R$ is complex then Inverted Ordering is also allowed with the proviso that the CP-phase, $δ$, is large, i.e., $\sim π/2$ or $-π/2$. The preliminary results from NO$ν$A favouring Normal Ordering and $δ$ near $-π/2$ imply quasi-degenerate neutrino masses in this model.

Implications of the CMS search for W_R on Grand Unification

The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has reported a 2.8$σ$ excess in the $(2e)(2jets)$ channel around 2.1 TeV. Interpretation of this data is reconsidered in terms of the production of a right-handed weak gauge boson, $W_R$, of the left-right symmetric model and in an $SO(10)$ grand unified theory abiding by the Extended Survival Hypothesis. The left-right symmetric model can be consistent with this excess if (a) the heavy right-handed neutrino has a mass near $W_R$, or (b) if $g_L \neq g_R$, or (c) the right-handed CKM matrix is nontrivial. Combinations of the above possibilities are also viable. A $W_R$ with a mass in the TeV region if embedded in $SO(10)$ is not compatible with $g_L = g_R$. Rather, it implies $0.64 \leq g_R/g_L \leq 0.78$. Further, a unique symmetry-breaking route -- the order being left-right discrete symmetry breaking first, followed by $SU(4)_C$ and finally $SU(2)_R$ -- to the standard model is picked out. The $L \leftrightarrow R$ discrete symmetry has to be broken at around $10^{16}$ GeV. The grand unification scale is pushed to $10^{18}$ GeV making the detection of proton decay in ongoing searches rather unlikely. The $SU(4)_C$ breaking scale can be at its allowed lower limit of $10^6$ GeV so that $n - \bar{n}$ oscillation or flavour changing processes such as $K_L \rightarrow μe$ and $B_{d,s} \rightarrow μe$ may be detectable. The Higgs scalar multiplets responsible for $SO(10)$ symmetry breaking at various stages are uniquely identified so long as one adheres to a minimalist principle. We also remark, {\em en passant}, about a partially unified Pati-Salam model.

Are the small neutrino oscillation parameters all related?

Neutrino oscillations reveal several small parameters, namely, $θ_{13}$, the solar mass splitting {\em vis-à-vis} the atmospheric one, and the deviation of $θ_{23}$ from maximal mixing. Can these small quantities all be traced to a single source and, if so, how could that be tested? Here a see-saw model for neutrino masses is presented wherein a dominant term generates the atmospheric mass splitting with maximal mixing in this sector, keeping $θ_{13} = 0$ and zero solar splitting. A Type-I see-saw perturbative contribution results in non-zero values of $θ_{13}$, $Δm^2_{solar}$, $θ_{12}$, as well as allows $θ_{23}$ to deviate from $π/4$ in consistency with the data while interrelating them all. CP-violation is a natural consequence and is large ($δ\sim π/2, 3π/2$) for inverted mass ordering. The model will be tested as precision on the neutrino parameters is sharpened.

KK-number non-conserving decays: Signal of n = 2 excitations of Extra-Dimensional Models at the LHC

In the simplest universal extra-dimension models Kaluza-Klein (KK) parity distinguishes the states with odd and even KK-number. We calculate the coupling of a 2n-level top quark to a top quark and the Higgs scalar (both n = 0 states), absent at the tree level, which is mediated by strong interactions at one-loop. We show that the strength of this coupling is independent of n. We observe that the decay due to this coupling, which conserves KK-parity, can be a few per cent of the phase space suppressed decay to two n-level states which proceeds through tree-level couplings. We explore the prospects of verification of this result at the Large Hadron Collider through the production of an n = 2 KK top-antitop pair both of which subsequently decay to a zero mode top quark/antiquark and a Higgs boson.

Obstacles to extending R-parity violation to Supersymmetric SU(5)

We explore the consequences of promoting bilinear R-parity violation, usually formulated in the minimal supersymmetric standard model framework, to a supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory. We observe that the limits on proton decay and neutrino mass place tight constraints on the bilinear SU(5) R-parity violating parameters creating a different doublet-triplet issue which cannot be resolved by an extension of the usual fine-tuning in the symmetry breaking scalar sector. If the parameters are made to satisfy the constraints, albeit unnaturally, there remains no room for the possibility to correct the SU(5) fermion mass ratios by introducing R-parity violation.

Relating small neutrino masses and mixing

Experiments on neutrino oscillations have uncovered several small parameters, $θ_{13}$ being a prominent one. Others are the solar mass splitting {\em vis-à-vis} the atmospheric one and the deviation of $θ_{23}$ from maximal mixing. In this talk we elaborate on a neutrino mass model based on the see-saw mechanism in which the mixing angles to start with are either vanishing ($θ_{13}$ and $θ_{12}$) or $π/4$ ($θ_{23}$). The atmospheric mass splitting is taken as a part of this initial structure but the solar splitting is absent. A perturbative contribution, originating from a Type-I see-saw, results in non-zero values of $θ_{13}$, $θ_{12}$, $Δm^2_{solar}$, and shifts $θ_{23}$ slightly from $π/4$, interrelating them all. The model incorporates CP-violation, the phase $δ$ being close to 3$π$/2 for (a) quasi-degeneracy or (b) inverted mass ordering. It will be put to test as the neutrino parameters get better determined.

Kinetic mixing and symmetry breaking dependent interactions of the dark photon

We examine spontaneous symmetry breaking of a renormalisable U(1) x U(1) gauge theory coupled to fermions when kinetic mixing is present. We do not assume that the kinetic mixing parameter is small. A rotation plus scaling is used to remove the mixing and put the gauge kinetic terms in the canonical form. Fermion currents are also rotated in a non-orthogonal way by this basis transformation. Through suitable redefinitions the interaction is cast into a diagonal form. This framework, where mixing is absent, is used for subsequent analysis. The symmetry breaking determines the fermionic current which couples to the massless gauge boson. The strength of this coupling as well as the couplings of the massive gauge boson are extracted. This formulation is used to consider a gauged model for dark matter by identifying the massless gauge boson with the photon and the massive state to its dark counterpart. Matching the coupling of the residual symmetry with that of the photon sets a lower bound on the kinetic mixing parameter. We present analytical formulae of the couplings of the dark photon in this model and indicate some physics consequences.

LHC limits on KK-parity non-conservation in the strong sector of universal extra-dimension models

In five-dimensional universal extra-dimensional models compactified on an $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold four-dimensional kinetic terms are allowed at the two fixed points. If these terms are unequal then Kaluza-Klein (KK) parity is broken. Within such a framework we consider resonant production of the n = 1 KK-gluon at the Large Hadron Collider and its subsequent decay to $t\bar{t}$, where both production and decay are KK-parity non-conserving. We use, for the first time, the exclusion data for a $t\bar{t}$ resonance obtained by the ATLAS collaboration to limit the mass ranges of quark and gluon excitations of the KK-parity-violating model which are found to be in the ballpark of 900 GeV.

Boundary Localized Terms in Universal Extra-Dimensional Models through a Dark Matter perspective

In universal extra dimension (UED) models with one compactified extra dimension, a Z_2 symmetry, termed KK-parity, ensures the stability of the lightest Kaluza-Klein particle (LKP). This symmetry leads to two fixed points. In non-minimal versions of UED boundary-localised terms (BLT) for different fields are included at these fixed points and KK-parity may be violated. However, BLTs with same strength at both points induce a new Z_2 symmetry which restores the stability of the LKP. We show that the BLTs serve to relax the bounds set on the compactification scale in UED by the dark matter relic density requirement. At the same time, the precision of the dark matter measurements severely correlates the BLT parameters of gauge bosons and fermions. Depending on the parameter values, the LKP can be chosen to be the level-1 photon, which is essentially the B^(1), or the level-1 Z-boson, basically the W_3^(1). We find that in the latter case the relic density is too small for a W_3^(1) with a \sim 1 TeV mass. We also explore the prospects of direct detection of an LKP which matches the observed dark matter relic density.

Smallness of θ_{13} and the size of the Solar Mass Splitting: Are they related?

Compared to the other neutrino mixing angles θ_{13} is small. The solar mass splitting is about two orders smaller than the atmospheric splitting. We show that it is possible that both are perturbative effects on a more symmetric structure. The perturbation also affects the solar mixing angle and can make alternate mixing patterns such as tribimaximal, bimaximal, or other variants equally viable. For real perturbations this can be accomplished only for normal mass ordering and with the lightest neutrino mass less than 10^{-2} eV. Both mass orderings can be accommodated by going over to complex perturbations provided the lightest neutrino is heavier. The CP-phase in the lepton sector that emerges distinguishes between different mixing models.

Universal Extra-Dimensional models with boundary localized kinetic terms: Probing at the LHC

In universal extra-dimensional models a conserved $Z_2$ parity ensures the stability of the lightest Kaluza-Klein particle, a potential dark-matter candidate. We show here that boundary-localized kinetic terms, in general, do not preserve this symmetry. We examine the single production of a Kaluza-Klein excitation of the photon and its decay to zero-mode fermion-antifermion pairs in the presence of such terms. We explore how experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN can help constrain the boundary-localized kinetic terms for different choices of the compactification radius.

Universal Extra-Dimensional models with boundary terms: Probing at the LHC

In universal extra-dimensional models a conserved Z_2 parity stabilizes the lightest Kaluza-Klein particle, a dark-matter candidate. Boundary-localized kinetic terms, in general, do not preserve this symmetry. We examine, in the presence of such terms, the single production of Kaluza-Klein excitations of the neutral electroweak gauge bosons and their decay to zero-mode fermion-antifermion pairs. We explore how experiments at the Large Hadron Collider constrain the boundary-localized kinetic terms for different compactification radii.

Perturbative generation of theta_{13} from tribimaximal neutrino mixing

Solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations are consistent with a tribimaximal form of the mixing matrix $U$ of the lepton sector. Exact tribimaximal mixing leads to $θ_{13}=0$. Recent results from the Daya Bay and RENO experiments have established a non-zero value of $θ_{13}$. Keeping the leading behaviour of $U$ as tribimaximal we perform a model-independent perturbative calculation to incorporate a non-vanishing $θ_{13}$. We identify the nature of the perturbation matrix and consider the possibility of the solar neutrino splitting also resulting from it. We calculate up to first order in perturbation theory and evaluate the deviations proportional to $\sin θ_{13}$ while including CP-nonconservation. Finally, we briefly discuss a gauge model where such an addition to the neutrino mass matrix arises through one-loop effects.

Light neutrinos from massless texture and below TeV seesaw scale

We present general conditions on Dirac and Majorana mass terms under which a type-I seesaw mechanism can lead to three exactly massless neutrinos at the tree level. We depict several examples where the conditions are satisfied and relate some of them to an underlying U(1) symmetry. We show that higher order corrections may generate the small observed masses and this may be achieved even when the heavy Majorana neutrinos are at the electroweak scale or a little higher.

An SO(10) model with adjoint fermions for double seesaw neutrino masses

An $SO(10)$ model where the $10_H$ and $120_H$ representations are used for generating fermion masses is quite predictive, though due to the absence of $SU(2)_{L,R}$ triplet/singlet fields it cannot give rise to neutrino masses through the usual type-I or type-II seesaw mechanisms. In this paper for neutrino masses we propose an extension of such an $SO(10)$ model by adding fermions in the adjoint representation (${45}_F$) and a symmetry breaking scalar $\bar{16}_H$. The $\bar{16}_H$ couples the adjoint fermions to the standard fermions in ${16}_F$ and induces neutrino masses through the `double seesaw' mechanism. In order to enhance the predictivity of the model we impose $μ-τ$ flavour symmetry on the Yukawa matrices for $10_H$ and $\bar{16}_H$ whereas for the $120_H$ it is assumed to be antisymmetric. We discuss the conditions that the mass matrices must obey so that the model can reproduce the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern.

GUTs with dim-5 interactions: Gauge Unification and Intermediate Scales

Dimension-5 corrections to the gauge kinetic term of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) may capture effects of quantum gravity or string compactification. Such operators modify the usual gauge coupling unification prediction in a calculable manner. Here we examine SU(5), SO(10), and E(6) GUTs in the light of all such permitted operators and calculate the impact on the intermediate scales and the unification programme. We show that in many cases at least one intermediate scale can be lowered to even 1-10 TeV, where a neutral Z' and possibly other states are expected.

Inverse see-saw, leptogenesis, observable proton decay and $Δ^{\pm\pm}_{\rm R}$ in SUSY SO(10) with heavy W_R

We explore low-scale leptogenesis in a class of supersymmetric SO(10) models using extra singlet neutrinos and the Higgs representations {126}_H\oplus {\ovl{126}}_H as well as {16}_H \oplus {\bar {16}}_H. A singlet neutrino, which can be as light as 10^5-10^6 GeV, decays through its small mixings with right-handed neutrinos creating a lepton asymmetry which is shown to be flavor dependent. While the doublet vacuum expectation value in {\ovl{16}}_H triggers the generation of desired mixings, it also induces a large RH triplet vev that breaks the LR intermediate gauge symmetry and gives large RH neutrino masses. Manifest unification of gauge couplings and generation of heavy RH neutrino masses are achieved by renormalizable interactions. The canonical (Type-I) see-saw contributions to the light neutrino mass matrix cancel out while the Type-II see-saw contribution is negligible. Determining the parameters of the dominant inverse see-saw formula using the underlying quark-lepton symmetry and neutrino oscillation data, we show how leptogenesis under the gravitino constraint is successfully implemented. New formulas for the decay rate and the asymmetry parameter are derived leading to baryon asymmetry within the observed range. The model is found to work for hierarchical as well as inverted hierarchical light neutrino masses. Testable predictions of the model are RH doubly charged Higgs bosons which may be leptophilic and accessible to the Tevatron, LHC or a linear collider. In a model-independent manner, the Drell-Yan pair production cross section is shown to be bounded between 59%-79% of their left-handed counterparts with same mass. In contrast to single-step breaking SUSY GUTs, which predict a long proton lifetime for p\to e^+π^0, here this lifetime is substantially reduced, bringing it within one order of the current experimental limit.

Exploring the Universal Extra Dimension at the LHC

Besides supersymmetry, the other prime candidate of physics beyond the standard model (SM), crying out for verification at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is extra-dimension. To hunt for effects of Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of known fermions and bosons is very much in the agenda of the LHC. These KK states arise when the SM particles penetrate in the extra space-like dimension(s). In this paper, we consider a 5d scenario, called `Universal Extra Dimension', where the extra space coordinate, compactified on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$, is accessed by {\em all} the particles. The KK number ($n$) is conserved at all tree level vertices. This entails the production of KK states in pairs and renders the lightest KK particle stable, which leaves the detector carrying away missing energy. The splitting between different KK flavors is controlled by the zero mode masses and the bulk- and brane-induced one-loop radiative corrections. We concentrate on the production of an $n=1$ KK electroweak gauge boson in association with an $n=1$ KK quark. This leads to a signal consisting of {\em only one} jet, one or more leptons and missing $p_T$. For definiteness we usually choose the inverse radius of compactification to be $R^{-1} = 500$ GeV, which sets the scale of the lowest lying KK states. We show on a case-by-case basis (depending on the number of leptons in the final state) that with 10 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV this signal can be detected over the SM background by imposing appropriate kinematic cuts. We record some of the expectations for a possible intermediate LHC run at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10 TeV and also exhibit the integrated luminosity required to obtain a 5$σ$ signal as a function of $R^{-1}$.

Power law scaling in Universal Extra Dimension scenarios

We study the power law running of gauge, Yukawa and quartic scalar couplings in the universal extra dimension scenario where the extra dimension is accessed by all the standard model fields. After compactifying on an $S_1 /Z_2$ orbifold, we compute one-loop contributions of the relevant Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers to the above couplings up to a cutoff scale $Λ$. Beyond the scale of inverse radius, once the KK states are excited, these couplings exhibit power law dependence on $Λ$. As a result of faster running, the gauge couplings tend to unify at a relatively low scale, and we choose our cutoff also around that scale. For example, for a radius $R \sim 1 TeV^{-1}$, the cutoff is around 30 TeV. We then examine the consequences of power law running on the triviality and vacuum stability bounds on the Higgs mass. We also comment that the supersymmetric extension of the scenario requires $R^{-1}$ to be larger than $\sim 10^{10}$ GeV in order that the gauge couplings remain perturbative up to the scale where they tend to unify.

Exploration prospects of a long baseline Beta Beam neutrino experiment with an iron calorimeter detector

A high intensity source of a single neutrino flavour with known spectrum is most desirable for precision measurements, the consensus direction for the future. The beta beam is an especially suitable option for this. We discuss the prospects of a very long baseline beta beam experiment with a magnetized iron calorimeter detector. In particular, with the source at CERN and the detector at the proposed India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) the baseline is near the `magic' value where the effect of the CP phase is small. We observe that this experiment will be well suited to determine the sign of $m_3^2 - m_2^2$ and will be capable of probing $θ_{13}$ down to about 1$^\circ$.

Probing Universal Extra Dimension at the International Linear Collider

In the context of an universal extra-dimensional scenario, we consider production of the first Kaluza-Klein electron positron pair in an $e^+e^-$ collider as a case-study for the future International Linear Collider. The Kaluza-Klein electron decays into a nearly degenerate Kaluza-Klein photon and a standard electron, the former carrying away missing energy. The Kaluza-Klein electron and photon states are heavy with their masses around the inverse radius of compactification, and their splitting is controlled by radiative corrections originating from bulk and brane-localised interactions. We look for the signal event $e^+e^- +$ large missing energy for $\sqrt s = 1$ TeV and observe that with a few hundred fb$^{-1}$ luminosity the signal will be readily detectable over the standard model background. We comment on how this signal may be distinguished from similar events from other new physics.

R-parity-violating trilinear couplings and recent neutrino data

The nontrivial structure of the neutrino mass matrix, suggested by the recent Super-Kamiokande results and data from other neutrino experiments, can be reproduced in R-parity-violating supersymmetric theories. This requires sets of products of R-parity-violating trilinear couplings to take appropriately chosen values. It is shown that the existing constraints on these couplings are satisfied by these choices.

Solar Neutrino Oscillation Diagnostics at Superkamiokande and Sno

Results for solar neutrino detection from the SuperKamiokande collaboration have been presented recently while those from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are expected in the near future. These experiments are sensitive to the 8B neutrinos from the sun, the shape of whose spectrum is well-known but the normalisation is less certain. We propose several variables, insensitive to the absolute flux of the incident beam, which probe the shape of the observed spectrum and can sensitively signal neutrino oscillations. They provide methods to extract the neutrino mixing angle and mass splitting from the data and also to distinguish oscillation to sequential neutrinos from those to a sterile neutrino.

Accelerator, reactor and atmospheric neutrino data: a three flavour oscillation analysis

We perform a three flavour analysis of the atmospheric, accelerator and reactor neutrino data from the Kamiokande, LSND and Bugey experiments respectively. Choosing the values of ${Δ{m}}^2$ obtained from two flavour fits of the first two experiments, the allowed ranges of the three generation mixing angles are determined. The accelerator experiments CHORUS and NOMAD are found to be most sensitive to regions of the allowed parameter space which correspond to genuine three generation solutions for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly.

Resonant neutrino oscillations and shock revival in type-II supernovae

The role of matter enhanced resonant neutrino oscillations in reviving a stalled shock in a type-II supernova through delayed neutrino heating is investigated. Searching $R$-parity-violating supersymmetry in semileptonic $B$-decays

If $R$-parity is broken and the photino, although unstable, does not decay within the detector, then in new semileptonic $B$-decay modes a light ($\sim$ 2--3 GeV) photino can be produced carrying missing energy. However, the photino, being massive, arranges a different kinematical configuration for the visible decay products as compared to a standard semileptonic event where the neutrino carries the missing energy. We study the above kinematic distributions in an attempt to explore the above scenario.
