Normal forms of para-CR hypersurfaces

We consider hypersurfaces of finite type in a direct product space ${\mathbb R}^2 \times {\mathbb R}^2$, which are analogues to real hypersurfaces of finite type in ${\mathbb C}^2$. We shall consider separately the cases where such hypersurfaces are regular and singular, in a sense that corresponds to Levi degeneracy in hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^2$. For the regular case, we study formal normal forms and prove convergence by following Chern and Moser. The normal form of such an hypersurface, considered as the solution manifold of a 2nd order ODE, gives rise to a normal form of the corresponding 2nd order ODE. For the degenerate case, we study normal forms for weighted $\ell$-jets. Furthermore, we study the automorphisms of finite type hypersurfaces.

Sard Property for the endpoint map on some Carnot groups

In Carnot-Caratheodory or sub-Riemannian geometry, one of the major open problems is whether the conclusions of Sard's theorem holds for the endpoint map, a canonical map from an infinite-dimensional path space to the underlying finite-dimensional manifold. The set of critical values for the endpoint map is also known as abnormal set, being the set of endpoints of abnormal extremals leaving the base point. We prove that a strong version of Sard's property holds for all step-2 Carnot groups and several other classes of Lie groups endowed with left-invariant distributions. Namely, we prove that the abnormal set lies in a proper analytic subvariety. In doing so we examine several characterizations of the abnormal set in the case of Lie groups.

Singular multicontact structures

We describe the automorphisms of a singular multicontact structure, that is a generalisation of the Martinet distribution. Such a structure is interpreted as a para-CR structure on a hypersurface M of a direct product space R^2 x R^2. We introduce the notion of a finite type singularity analogous to CR geometry and, along the way, we prove extension results for para-CR functions and mappings on embedded para-CR manifolds into the ambient space.

Ultrarigid tangents of sub-Riemannian nilpotent groups

We show that the tangent cone at the identity is not a complete quasiconformal invariant for sub-Riemannian nilpotent groups. Namely, we show that there exists a nilpotent Lie group equipped with left invariant sub-Riemannian metric that is not locally quasiconformally equivalent to its tangent cone at the identity. In particular, such spaces are not locally bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic. The result is based on the study of Carnot groups that are rigid in the sense that their only quasiconformal maps are the translations and the dilations.

Isometries of Carnot groups and subFinsler homogeneous manifolds

We show that isometries between open sets of Carnot groups are affine. This result generalizes a result of Hamenstadt. Our proof does not rely on her proof. In addition, we study global isometries of general homogeneous manifolds equipped with left-invariant subFinsler distances. We show that each isometry is determined by the blow up at one point. For proving the results, we consider the action of isometries on the space of Killing vector fields. We make use of results by Capogna-Cowling and by Gleason-Montgomery-Zippin for obtaining smoothness of the isometric action.

A Liouville type theorem for Carnot groups

L. Capogna and M. Cowling showed that if $ϕ$ is 1-quasiconformal on an open subset of a Carnot group G, then composition with $ϕ$ preserves Q-harmonic functions, where Q denotes the homogeneous dimension of G. Then they combine this with a regularity theorem for Q-harmonic functions to show that $ϕ$ is in fact $C^\infty$. As an application, they observe that a Liouville type theorem holds for some Carnot groups of step 2. In this article we argue, using the Engel group as an example, that a Liouville type theorem can be proved for every Carnot group. Indeed, the fact that 1-quasiconformal maps are smooth allows us to obtain a Liouville type theorem by applying the Tanaka prolongation theory.

Multicontact mappings on Hessenberg manifolds

This thesis was inspired by work of M. Cowling, F. De Mari, A. Koranyi and M. Reimann, who studied multicontact structures for the homogeneous manifolds G/P, where G is a semisimple Lie group and P is the minimal parabolic subgroup of G. The multicontact structure here arises naturally by the nilpotent component N of the Iwasawa decomposition of G, which is an open and dense subset of G/P. In the thesis two problems are addressed. The first one concerns the representation of simple Lie algebras in terms of polynomial algebras. More precisely, a polynomial basis for split simple Lie algebras is explicitly given in a suitable choice of coordinates. The second problem investigates the multicontact structure on Hessenberg manifolds. These manifolds can be locally viewed as quotient of the nilpotent component in the Iwasawa decomposition of semisimple Lie groups. Then the multicontact structure is inherited by the one in the Iwasawa nilpotent case. Rigidity with respect to this structure is studied and proved for a large subclass of Hessenberg manifolds.
