An extension of the Rådström Cancellation Theorem to Cornets

The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of cornets, which form a particular subclass of ordered semigroups also equipped with a multiplication by natural numbers. The most important standard examples for cornets are the families of the nonempty subsets and the nonempty fuzzy subsets of a vector space. In a cornet, the convexity, nonnegativity, Archimedean property, boundedness, closedness of an element can be defined naturally. The basic properties related to these notions are established. The main result extends the Cancellation Principle discovered by Rådström in 1952.

Applications of the Bielecki renorming technique

The renorming technique allows one to apply the Banach Contraction Principle for maps which are not contractions with respect to the original metric. This method was invented by Bielecki and manifested in an extremely elegant proof of the Global Existence and Uniqueness Theorem for ODEs. The present paper provides further extensions and applications of Bielecki's method to problems stemming from the theory of functional analysis and functional equations.

Characterization of approximately monotone and approximately Hölder functions

A real valued function $f$ defined on a real open interval $I$ is called $Φ$-monotone if, for all $x,y\in I$ with $x\leq y$ it satisfies $$ f(x)\leq f(y)+Φ(y-x), $$ where $Φ:[0,\ell(I)[\,\to\mathbb{R}_+$ is a given nonnegative error function, where $\ell(I)$ denotes the length of the interval $I$. If $f$ and $-f$ are simultaneously $Φ$-monotone, then $f$ is said to be a $Φ$-Hölder function. In the main results of the paper, using the notions of upper and lower interpolations, we establish a characterization for both classes of functions. This allows one to construct $Φ$-monotone and $Φ$-Hölder functions from elementary ones, which could be termed the building blocks for those classes. In the second part, we deduce Ostrowski- and Hermite--Hadamard-type inequalities from the $Φ$-monotonicity and $Φ$-Hölder properties, and then we verify the sharpness of these implications. We also establish implications in the reversed direction.

Decision making via generalized Bajraktarević means

We define decision-making functions which arise from studying the multidimensional generalization of the weighted Bajraktarević means. It allows a nonlinear approach to optimization problems. These functions admit several interesting (from the point of view of decision-making) properties, for example, delegativity (which states that each subgroup of decision-makers can aggregate their decisions and efforts), casuativity (each decision affects the final outcome except two trivial cases) and convexity-type properties. Beyond establishing the most important properties of such means, we solve their equality problem, we introduce a notion of synergy and characterize the null-synergy decision-making functions of this type.

On additive functions with additional derivation properties

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of a generalized derivation which derivates a prescribed family of smooth vector-valued functions of several variables. The basic calculus rules are established and then a result derived which shows that if a function $f$ satisfies an addition theorem whose determining operation is derivable with respect to an additive function $d$, then the function $f$ is itself derivable with respect to $d$. As an application of this approach, new proof of a generalization of a recent result of Maksa is obtained. We also extend the result of Nishiyama and Horinouchi and formulate two open problems.

Additive solvability and linear independence of the solutions of a system of functional equations

The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand, the additive solvability of the system of functional equations \[d_{k}(xy)=\sum_{i=0}^{k}Γ(i,k-i) d_{i}(x)d_{k-i}(y) \qquad (x,y\in \R,\,k\in\{0,\ldots,n\}) \] is studied, where $Δ_n:=\big\{(i,j)\in\Z\times\Z\mid 0\leq i,j\mbox{and}i+j\leq n\big\}$ and $Γ\colonΔ_n\to\R$ is a symmetric function such that $Γ(i,j)=1$ whenever $i\cdot j=0$. On the other hand, the linear dependence and independence of the additive solutions $d_{0},d_{1},\dots,d_{n}\colon \R\to\R$ of the above system of equations is characterized. As a consequence of the main result, for any nonzero real derivation $d\colon\R\to\R$, the iterates $d^0,d^1,\dots,d^n$ of $d$ are shown to be linearly independent, and the graph of the mapping $x\mapsto (x,d^1(x),\dots,d^n(x))$ to be dense in $\R^{n+1}$.

Computer aided solution of the invariance equation for two-variable Gini means

Our aim is to solve the so-called invariance equation in the class of two-variable Gini means ${G_{p,q}:p,q\in\R}$, i.e., to find necessary and sufficient conditions on the 6 parameters $a,b,c,d,p,q$ such that the identity [G_{p,q}\big(G_{a,b}(x,y),G_{c,d}(x,y)\big)=G_{p,q}(x,y) \qquad (x,y \in \R_+)] be valid. We recall that, for $p\neq q$, the Gini mean $G_{p,q}$ is defined by [G_{p,q}(x,y):=(\dfrac{x^p+y^p}{x^q+y^q})^{\frac1{p-q}}\qquad (x,y \in \R_+).] The proof uses the computer algebra system Maple V Release 9 to compute a Taylor expansion up to 12th order, which enables us to describe all the cases of the equality.

Computer aided solution of the invariance equation for two-variable Stolarsky means

We solve the so-called invariance equation in the class of two-variable Stolarsky means ${S_{p,q}:p,q\in\R}$, i.e., we find necessary and sufficient conditions on the 6 parameters $a,b,c,d,p,q$ such that the identity [S_{p,q}\big(S_{a,b}(x,y),S_{c,d}(x,y)\big)=S_{p,q}(x,y) \qquad (x,y \in \R_+)] be valid. We recall that, for $pq(p-q)\neq 0$ and $x\neq y$, the Stolarsky mean $S_{p,q}$ is defined by [S_{p,q}(x,y):=(\dfrac{q(x^p-y^p)}{p(x^q-y^q)})^{\frac1{p-q}}.] In the proof first we approximate the Stolarsky mean and we use the computer algebra system Maple V Release 9 to compute the Taylor expansion of the approximation up to 12th order, which enables us to describe all the cases of the equality.

Implications between approximate convexity properties and approximate Hermite-Hadamard inequalities

In this paper, the connection between the functional inequalities $$ f\Big(\frac{x+y}{2}\Big)\leq\frac{f(x)+f(y)}{2}+α_J(x-y) \qquad (x,y\in D)$$ and $$ \int_0^1f\big(tx+(1-t)y\big)ρ(t)dt \leqλf(x)+(1-λ)f(y) +α_H(x-y) \qquad (x,y\in D)$$ is investigated, where $D$ is a convex subset of a linear space, $f:D\to\R$, $α_H,α_J:D-D\to\R$ are even functions, $λ\in[0,1]$, and $ρ:[0,1]\to\R_+$ is an integrable nonnegative function with $\int_0^1ρ(t)dt=1$.

On strong $(α,\F)$-convexity

In this paper, strongly $(α,T)$-convex functions, i.e., functions $f:D\to \R$ satisfying the functional inequality $$ f(tx+(1-t)y)\leq tf(x)+(1-t)f(y)-tα\big((1-t)(x-y)\big)-(1-t)α\big(t(y-x)\big)$$ for $x,y\in D$ and $t\in T\cap[0,1]$ are investigated. Here $D$ is a convex set in a linear space, $α$ is a nonnegative function on $D-D$, and $T\subseteq\R$ is a nonempty set. The main results provide various characterizations of strong $(α,T)$-convexity in the case when $T$ is a subfield of $\R$.
