Kohn-Sham equations with functionals from the strictly-correlated regime: Investigation with a spectral renormalization method

We re-adapt a spectral renormalization method, introduced in nonlinear optics, to solve the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations of density functional theory (DFT), with a focus on functionals based on the strictly-correlated electrons (SCE) regime, which are particularly challenging to converge. Important aspects of the method are: (i) the eigenvalues and the density are computed simultaneously; (ii) it converges using randomized initial guesses; (iii) easy to implement. Using this method we could converge for the first time the Kohn-Sham equations with functionals that include the next leading term in the strong-interaction limit of density functional theory, the so-called zero-point energy (ZPE) functional as well as with an interaction-strength-interpolation (ISI) functional that includes both the exact SCE and ZPE terms. This work is the first building block for future studies on quantum systems confined in low dimensions with different statistics and long-range repulsions, such as localization properties of fermions and bosons with strong long-range repulsive interactions in the presence of a random external potential.

Large coupling-strength expansion of the Møller-Plesset adiabatic connection: From paradigmatic cases to variational expressions for the leading terms

We study in detail the first three leading terms of the large coupling-strength limit of the adiabatic connection that has as weak-interaction expansion the Møller-Plesset perturbation theory. We first focus on the H atom, both in the spin-polarized and the spin-unpolarized case, reporting numerical and analytical results. In particular, we derive an asymptotic equation that turns out to have simple analytical solutions for certain channels. The asymptotic H atom solution for the spin-unpolarized case is then shown to be variationally optimal for the many-electron spin-restricted closed-shell case, providing expressions for the large coupling-strength density functionals up to the third leading order. We also analyze the H2 molecule and the uniform electron gas.

Generalized Uncertainty Principle and Analogue of Quantum Gravity in Optics

The design of optical systems capable of processing and manipulating ultra-short pulses and ultra-focused beams is highly challenging with far reaching fundamental technological applications. One key obstacle routinely encountered while implementing sub-wavelength optical schemes is how to overcome the limitations set by standard Fourier optics. A strategy to overcome these difficulties is to utilize the concept of generalized uncertainty principle (G-UP) that has been originally developed to study quantum gravity. In this paper we propose to use the concept of G-UP within the framework of optics to show that the generalized Schrodinger equation describing short pulses and ultra-focused beams predicts the existence of a minimal spatial or temporal scale which in turn implies the existence of maximally localized states. Using a Gaussian wavepacket with complex phase, we derive the corresponding generalized uncertainty relation and its maximally localized states. We numerically show that the presence of nonlinearity helps the system to reach its maximal localization. Our results may trigger further theoretical and experimental tests for practical applications and analogues of fundamental physical theories.

Integrable nonlocal nonlinear equations

A nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation was recently found by the authors and shown to be an integrable infinite dimensional Hamiltonian equation. Unlike the classical (local) case, here the nonlinearly induced "potential" is $PT$ symmetric thus the nonlocal NLS equation is also $PT$ symmetric. In this paper, new {\it reverse space-time} and {\it reverse time} nonlocal nonlinear integrable equations are introduced. They arise from remarkably simple symmetry reductions of general AKNS scattering problems where the nonlocality appears in both space and time or time alone. They are integrable infinite dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical systems. These include the reverse space-time, and in some cases reverse time, nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger, modified Korteweg-deVries (mKdV), sine-Gordon, $(1+1)$ and $(2+1)$ dimensional three-wave interaction, derivative NLS, "loop soliton", Davey-Stewartson (DS), partially $PT$ symmetric DS and partially reverse space-time DS equations. Linear Lax pairs, an infinite number of conservation laws, inverse scattering transforms are discussed and one soliton solutions are found. Integrable reverse space-time and reverse time nonlocal discrete nonlinear Schrödinger type equations are also introduced along with few conserved quantities. Finally, nonlocal Painlevé type equations are derived from the reverse space-time and reverse time nonlocal NLS equations.

Constant-intensity waves and their modulation instability in non-Hermitian potentials

In all of the diverse areas of science where waves play an important role, one of the most fundamental solutions of the corresponding wave equation is a stationary wave with constant intensity. The most familiar example is that of a plane wave propagating in free space. In the presence of any Hermitian potential, a wave's constant intensity is, however, immediately destroyed due to scattering. Here we show that this fundamental restriction is conveniently lifted when working with non-Hermitian potentials. In particular, we present a whole new class of waves that have constant intensity in the presence of linear as well as of nonlinear inhomogeneous media with gain and loss. These solutions allow us to study, for the first time, the fundamental phenomenon of modulation instability in an inhomogeneous environment. Our results pose a new challenge for the experiments on non-Hermitian scattering that have recently been put forward.

Continuous and discrete Schrodinger systems with PT-symmetric nonlinearities

We investigate the dynamical behavior of continuous and discrete Schrodinger systems exhibiting parity-time (PT) invariant nonlinearities. We show that such equations behave in a fundamentally different fashion than their nonlinear Schrodinger counterparts. In particular, the PT-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger equation can simultaneously support both bright and dark soliton solutions. In addition, we study a two-element discretized version of this PT nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By obtaining the underlying invariants, we show that this system is fully integrable and we identify the PT-symmetry breaking conditions. This arrangement is unique in the sense that the exceptional points are fully dictated by the nonlinearity itself.
