Non-local dispersal equations with almost periodic dependence. II. Asymptotic dynamics of Fisher-KPP equations

This series of two papers is devoted to the study of the principal spectral theory of nonlocal dispersal operators with almost periodic dependence and the study of the asymptotic dynamics of nonlinear nonlocal dispersal equations with almost periodic dependence. In the first part of the series, we investigated the principal spectral theory of nonlocal dispersal operators from two aspects: top Lyapunov exponents and generalized principal eigenvalues. Among others, we provided various characterizations of the top Lyapunov exponents and generalized principal eigenvalues, established the relations between them, and studied the effect of time and space variations on them. In this second part of the series, we study the asymptotic dynamics of nonlinear nonlocal dispersal equations with almost periodic dependence applying the principal spectral theory developed in the first part. In particular, we study the existence, uniqueness, and stability of almost periodic solutions of Fisher KPP equations with nonlocal dispersal and almost periodic dependence. By the properties of the asymptotic dynamics of nonlocal dispersal Fisher-KPP equations, we also establish a new property of the generalized principal eigenvalues of nonlocal dispersal operators in this second part of the series.

Vanishing-spreading dichotomy in a two-species chemotaxis competition system with a free boundary

Predicting the evolution of expanding population is critical to control biological threats such as invasive species and virus explosion. In this paper, we consider a two species chemotaxis system of parabolic-parabolic-elliptic type with Lotka-Volterra type competition terms and a free boundary. Such a model with a free boundary describes the spreading of new or invasive species subject to the influence of some chemical substances in an environment with a free boundary representing the spreading front. We first find conditions on the parameters which guarantee the global existence and boundedness of classical solutions with nonnegative initial functions. Next, we investigate vanishing-spreading dichotomy scenarios for positive solutions. It is shown that the vanishing-spreading dichotomy in the generalized sense always occurs; that the vanishing spreading dichotomy in the strong sense occurs when the competition between two species is weak-weak competition; and that the vanishing spreading dichotomy in the weak sense occurs when the competition between two species is weak-strong competition.

Almost automorphically forced flows on $S^1$ or $\mathbb{R}$ in one-dimensional almost periodic semilinear heat equations

In this paper, we consider the asymptotic dynamics of the skew-product semiflow generated by the following time almost-periodically forced scalar reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation}\label{eq0} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\, 0<x<L \end{equation} with periodic boundary condition \begin{equation} \label{bdc1} u(t,0)=u(t,L),\quad u_x(t,0)=u_x(t,L), \end{equation} where $f$ is uniformly almost periodic in $t$. In particular, we study the topological structure of the limit sets of the skew-product semiflow. It is proved that any compact minimal invariant set (throughout this paper, we refer to it as a minimal set) can be residually embedded into an invariant set of some almost automorphically-forced flow on a circle $S^1=\mathbb{R}/L\mathbb{Z}$. Particularly, if $f(t,u,p)=f(t,u,-p)$, then the flow on a minimal set topologically conjugates to an almost periodically-forced minimal flow on $\mathbb{R}$. Moreover, it is proved that the $ω$-limit set of any bounded orbit contains at most two minimal sets that cannot be obtained from each other by phase translation. In addition, we further consider the asymptotic dynamics of the skew-product semiflow generated by \eqref{eq0} with Neumann boundary condition \begin{equation*} \label{bcd2} u_x(t,0)=u_x(t,L)=0, \end{equation*} or Dirichlet boundary condition \begin{equation*}\label{bdc3} u(t,0)=u(t,L)=0. \end{equation*} Under certain direct assumptions on $f$, it is proved in this paper that the flow on any minimal set of \eqref{eq0}, with Neumann boundary condition or Dirichlet boundary condition, topologically conjugates to an almost periodically-forced minimal flow on $\mathbb{R}$. Finally, a counterexample is given to show that even for quasi-periodic equations, the results we obtain here cannot be further improved in general.

Logistic type attraction-repulsion chemotaxis systems with a free boundary or unbounded boundary. II. Spreading-vanishing dichotomy in a domain with a free boundary

The current series of research papers is to investigate the asymptotic dynamics in logistic type chemotaxis models in one space dimension with a free boundary or unbounded boundary. Such a model with a free boundary describes the spreading of a new or invasive species subject to the influence of some chemical substances in an environment with a free boundary representing the spreading front. In this first of the series, we investigated the dynamical behaviors of logistic type chemotaxis models on the half line $\mathbb{R}^+$, which are formally corresponding limit systems of the free boundary problems. In the second of the series, we establish the spreading-vanishing dichotomy in chemoattraction-repulsion systems with a free boundary as well as with double free boundaries.

Long time behavior of random and nonautonomous Fisher-KPP equations. Part I. Stability of equilibria and spreading speeds

In the current series of two papers, we study the long time behavior of the following random Fisher-KPP equation $$ u_t =u_{xx}+a(θ_tω)u(1-u),\quad x\in\mathbb{R} $$ where $ω\inΩ$, $(Ω, \mathcal{F},\mathbb{P})$ is a given probability space, $θ_t$ is an ergodic metric dynamical system on $Ω$, and $a(ω)>0$ for every $ω\inΩ$. We also study the long time behavior of the following nonautonomous Fisher-KPP equation, $$ u_t=u_{xx}+a_0(t)u(1-u),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}$$ where $a_0(t)$ is a positive locally Hölder continuous function. In this first part of the series, we investigate the stability of positive equilibria and the spreading speeds. Under some proper assumption on $a(ω)$, we show that the constant solution $u=1$ of (1) is asymptotically stable with respect to strictly positive perturbations and show that (1) has a deterministic spreading speed interval $[2\sqrt{\underline a}, 2\sqrt{\bar a}]$, where $\underline{a}$ and $\bar a$ are the least and the greatest means of $a(\cdot)$, respectively, and hence the spreading speed interval is linearly determinant. It is shown that the solution of (1) with the initial function which is bounded away from $0$ for $x\ll -1$ and is $0$ for $x\gg 1$ propagates at the speed $2\sqrt {\hat a}$, where $\hat a$ is the average of $a(\cdot)$. Under some assumption on $a_0(\cdot)$, we also show that the constant solution $u=1$ of (2) is asymptotically stably and (2) admits a bounded spreading speed interval. It is not assumed that $a(ω)$ and $a_0(t)$ are bounded above and below by some positive constants. The results obtained in this part are new and extend the existing results in literature on spreading speeds of Fisher-KPP equations. In the second part of the series, we will study the existence and stability of transition fronts of (1) and (2).

Non-wandering points for autonomous/periodic parabolic equations on the circle

We study the properties of non-wandering points of the following scalar reaction-diffusion equation on the circle $S^1$, \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f$ is independent of $t$ or $T$-periodic in $t$. Assume that the equation admits a compact global attractor. It is proved that, any non-wandering point is a limit point of the system (that is, it is a point in some $ω$-limit set). More precisely, in the autonomous case, it is proved that any non-wandering point is either a fixed point or generates a rotating wave on the circle. In the periodic case, it is proved that any non-wandering point is a periodic point or generates a rotating wave on a torus. In particular, if $f(t,u,-u_x)=f(t,u,u_x)$, then any non-wandering point is a fixed point in the autonomous case, and is a periodic point in the periodic case.

Persistence and spreading speeds of parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel models in shifting environments

The current paper is concerned with the persistence and spreading speeds of the following Keller-Segel chemoattraction system in shifting environments, \begin{equation}\label{abstract-eq1} \begin{cases} u_t=u_{xx}-χ(uv_x)_x +u(r(x-ct)-bu),\quad x\in\R\cr 0=v_{xx}- νv+μu,\quad x\in\R, \end{cases} \end{equation} where $χ$, $b$, $ν$, and $μ$ are positive constants, { $c\in\R$ }, $r(x)$ is Hölder continuous, bounded, $r^*=\sup_{x\in\R}r(x)>0$, $r(\pm \infty):=\lim_{x\to \pm\infty}r(x)$ exist, and $r(x)$ satisfies either $r(-\infty)<0<r(\infty)$, or $r(\pm\infty)<0$. Assume $b>χμ$ and $b\ge \big(1+\frac{1}{2}\frac{(\sqrt{r^*}-\sqrtν)_+}{(\sqrt{r^*}+\sqrtν)}\big)χμ$. In the case that $r(-\infty)<0<r(\infty)$, it is shown that if the moving speed $c>c^*:=2\sqrt{r^*}$, then the species becomes extinct in the habitat. If the moving speed $ -c^*\leq c<c^*$, then the species will persist and spread along the shifting habitat at the asymptotic spreading speed $c^*$. If the moving speed $c<-c^*$, then the species will spread in the both directions at the asymptotic spreading speed $c^*$. In the case that $r(\pm\infty)<0$, it is shown that if $|c|>c^*$, then the species will become extinct in the habitat. If $λ_{\infty}$, defined to be the generalized principle eigenvalue of the operator $u\to u_{xx}+cu_{x}+r(x)u$, is negative and the degradation rate $ν$ of the chemo-attractant is grater than or equal to some number $ν^*$, then the species will also become extinct in the habitat. If $λ_{\infty}>0$, then the species will persist surrounding the good habitat.

Pointwise persistence in full chemotaxis models with logistic source on bounded heterogeneous environments

The current paper is concerned with pointwise persistence in full chemotaxis models with local as well as nonlocal time and space dependent logistic source in bounded domains. We first prove the global existence and boundedness of nonnegative classical solutions under some conditions on the coefficients in the models. Next, under the same conditions on the coefficients, we show that pointwise { persistence} occurs, that is, any globally defined positive solution is bounded below by a positive constant independent of its initial condition when the time is large enough. It should be pointed out that in \cite{TaoWin15}, the authors established the persistence of mass for globally defined positive solutions, which indicates that any extinction phenomenon, if occurring at all, necessarily must be spatially local { in }nature, whereas the population as a whole always persists. The pointwise persistence proved in the current paper implies that not only the population as a whole persists, but also it persists at any location eventually. It also implies the existence of strictly positive entire solutions.

Criteria for the Existence of Principal Eigenvalues of Time Periodic Cooperative Linear Systems with Nonlocal Dispersal

The current paper {establishes} criteria for the existence of principal eigenvalues of time periodic cooperative linear nonlocal dispersal systems with Direchlet type, Neumann type or periodic type boundary conditions. It is shown that such a nonlocal dispersal system has a principal eigenvalue in the following cases: the nonlocal dispersal distance is sufficiently small; the spatial inhomogeneity satisfies a so called vanishing condition; or the spatial inhomogeneity is nearly globally homogeneous. Moreover, it is shown that the principal eigenvalue of a time periodic cooperative linear nonlocal dispersal system (if it exists) is algebraically simple. A linear nonlocal dispersal system may not have a principal eigenvalue. The results established in the current paper extend those in literature for time independent or periodic nonlocal dispersal equations to time periodic cooperative nonlocal dispersal systems and {will} serve as {a} basic tool for the study of cooperative nonlinear systems with nonlocal dispersal.

Existence of Traveling wave solutions of parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis systems

The current paper is devoted to the study of traveling wave solutions of the following parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis systems, $$ \begin{cases} u_{t}= Δu-χ\nabla \cdot (u \nabla v) + u(a-bu),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N τv_t=Δv-v+u, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N, \end{cases} $$ where $u(x,t)$ represents the population density of a mobile species and $v(x,t)$ represents the population density of a chemoattractant, and $χ$ represents the chemotaxis sensitivity. We prove that for every $τ>0$, there is $0<χ_τ^*<\frac{b}{2}$ such that for every $0<χ<χ_τ^*$, there exist two positive numbers $2\sqrt a \le c^{*}(χ,τ)<c^{**}(χ,τ)$ satisfying that for every $ c\in [ c^{*}(χ,τ)\,\ c^{**}(χ,τ))$ and $ξ\in S^{N-1}$, the system has a traveling wave solution $(u(x,t),v(x,t))=(U(x\cdotξ-ct;τ),V(x\cdotξ-ct;τ))$ with speed $c$ connecting the constant solutions $(\frac{a}{b},\frac{a}{b})$ and $(0,0)$, and it does not have such traveling wave solutions of speed less than $2\sqrt a$. Moreover, $$ \lim_{χ\to 0^+}c^{**}(χ,τ)=\infty,$$ $$ \lim_{χ\to 0^+}c^{*}(χ,τ)=\begin{cases} 2\sqrt{a}\qquad \qquad \qquad\ \text{if} \quad 0<a\leq \frac{1+τa}{(1-τ)_+}\cr \frac{1+τa}{(1-τ)_{+}}+\frac{a(1-τ)_{+}}{1+τa}\quad \text{if} \quad a\geq \frac{1+τa}{(1-τ)_+}, \end{cases} $$ and $$ \lim_{x\to -\infty}\frac{U(x;τ)}{e^{-μx}}=1, $$ where $μ$ is the only solution of the equation $μ+\frac{a}μ=c$ in the interval $(0, \min\{\sqrt a, \sqrt{\frac{1+τa}{(1-τ)_+}}\})$. Furthermore, it hods that $\lim_{τ\to 0^+}χ_τ^*=\frac{b}{2}$.

Principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet spaces of positive random dynamical systems. III. Parabolic equations and delay systems

This is the third part in a series of papers concerned with principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet subspaces of positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. The current part focuses on applications of general theory, developed in the authors' paper "Principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet spaces of positive random dynamical systems. I. General theory," Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 365 (2013), pp. 5329-5365, to positive continuous-time random dynamical systems on infinite dimensional ordered Banach spaces arising from random parabolic equations and random delay systems. It is shown under some quite general assumptions that measurable linear skew-product semidynamical systems generated by random parabolic equations and by cooperative systems of linear delay differential equations admit measurable families of generalized principal Floquet subspaces, and generalized principal Lyapunov exponents.

Spectral theory for nonlocal dispersal operators with time periodic indefinite weight functions and applications

In this paper, we study the spectral theory for nonlocal dispersal operators with time periodic indefinite weight functions subject to Dirichlet type, Neumann type and spatial periodic type boundary conditions. We first obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique positive principal spectrum point for such operators. We then investigate upper bounds of principal spectrum points and sufficient conditions for the principal spectrum points to be principal eigenvalues. Finally we discuss the applications to nonlinear mathematical models from biology.

Spreading Speeds and Traveling waves of a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with logistic source on R^N

In this paper, we study the spreading speeds and traveling wave solutions of the PDE $$ \begin{cases} u_{t}= Δu-χ\nabla \cdot (u \nabla v) + u(1-u),\ \ x\in\mathbb{R}^N 0=Δv-v+u, \ \ x\in\mathbb{R}^N, \end{cases} $$ where $u(x,t)$ and $v(x,t)$ represent the population and the chemoattractant densities, respectively, and $χ$ is the chemotaxis sensitivity. It has been shown in an earlier work by the authors of the current paper that, when $0<χ<1$, for every nonnegative uniformly continuous and bounded function $u_0(x)$, the system has a unique globally bounded classical solution $(u(x,t;u_0),v(x,t;u_0))$ with initial condition $u(x,0;u_0)=u_0(x)$. Furthermore, if $0<χ<\frac{1}{2}$, then the constant steady-state solution $(1,1)$ is asymptotically stable with respect to strictly positive perturbations. In the current paper, we show that if $0<χ<1$, then there are nonnegative constants $c_{-}^*(χ)\leq c_+^*(χ)$ such that for every nonnegative initial function $u_0(\cdot)$ with nonempty compact support $$ \lim_{t\to\infty} \sup_{|x|\le ct} \big[|u(x,t;u_0)-1|+|v(x,t;u_0)-1|\big]=0\ \ \forall\ 0<c<c_{-}^*(χ) $$ and $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}\sup_{|x|\geq ct} \big[ u(x,t;u_0)+v(x,t;u_0)\big]=0\ \ \forall\ c>c_{+}^*(χ).$$ We also show that if $0<χ<\frac{1}{2}$, there is a positive constant $c^*(χ)$ such that for every $c\ge c^*(χ)$, the system has a traveling wave solution $(u(x,t),v(x,t))$ with speed $c$ and connecting $(1,1)$ and $(0,0)$, that is, $(u(x,t),v(x,t))=(U(x-ct),V(x-ct))$ for some functions $U(\cdot)$ and $V(\cdot)$ satisfying $(U(-\infty),V(-\infty))=(1,1)$ and $(U(\infty),V(\infty))=(0,0)$. Moreover, $$ \lim_{χ\to 0}c^*(χ)=\lim_{χ\to 0}c_+^*(χ)=\lim_{χ\to 0}c_-^*(χ)=2. $$ We first give a detailed study in the case $N=1$ and next we extend these results to the case $N\ge 2$.

Structure of $ω$-limit Sets for Almost-periodic Parabolic Equations on $S^1$ with Reflection Symmetry

The structure of the $ω$-limit sets is thoroughly investigated for the skew-product semiflow which is generated by a scalar reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f$ is uniformly almost periodic in $t$ and satisfies $f(t,u,u_x)=f(t,u,-u_x)$. We show that any $ω$-limit set $Ω$ contains at most two minimal sets. Moreover, any hyperbolic $ω$-limit set $Ω$ is a spatially-homogeneous $1$-cover of hull $H(f)$. When $\dim V^c(Ω)=1$ ($V^c(Ω)$ is the center space associated with $Ω$), it is proved that either $Ω$ is a spatially-homogeneous, or $Ω$ is a spatially-inhomogeneous $1$-cover of $H(f)$.

Approximations of Random Dispersal Operators/Equations by Nonlocal Dispersal Operators/Equations

It first proves that the solutions of properly rescaled nonlocal dispersal initial-boundary value problems converge to the solutions of the corresponding random dispersal initial-boundary value problems. Next, it proves that the principal spectrum points of nonlocal dispersal operators with properly rescaled kernels converge to the principal eigenvalues of the corresponding random dispersal operators. Finally, it proves that the unique positive time periodic solutions of nonlocal dispersal KPP equations with properly rescaled kernels converge to the unique positive time periodic solutions of the corresponding random dispersal KPP equations.

Diffusive KPP Equations with Free Boundaries in Time Almost Periodic Environments: I. Spreading and Vanishing Dichotomy

In this series of papers, we investigate the spreading and vanishing dynamics of time almost periodic diffusive KPP equations with free boundaries. Such equations are used to characterize the spreading of a new species in time almost periodic environments with free boundaries representing the spreading fronts. In this first part, we show that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy occurs for such free boundary problems, that is, the species either successfully spreads to all the new environment and stabilizes at a time almost periodic positive solution, or it fails to establish and dies out eventually. The results of this part extend the existing results on spreading-vanishing dichotomy for time and space independent, or time periodic and space independent, or time independent and space periodic diffusive KPP equations with free boundaries. The extension is nontrivial and is ever done for the first time.

Diffusive KPP Equations with Free Boundaries in Time Almost Periodic Environments: II. Spreading Speeds and Semi-Wave

In this series of papers, we investigate the spreading and vanishing dynamics of time almost periodic diffusive KPP equations with free boundaries. Such equations are used to characterize the spreading of a new species in time almost periodic environments with free boundaries representing the spreading fronts. In the first part of the series, we showed that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy occurs for such free boundary problems (see [16]). In this second part of the series, we investigate the spreading speeds of such free boundary problems in the case that the spreading occurs. We first prove the existence of a unique time almost periodic semi-wave solution associated to such a free boundary problem. Using the semi-wave solution, we then prove that the free boundary problem has a unique spreading speed.

Regularity and stability of transition fronts in nonlocal equations with time heterogeneous ignition nonlinearity

The present paper is devoted to the investigation of various properties of transition fronts in nonlocal equations in heterogeneous media of ignition type, whose existence has been established by the authors of the present paper in a previous work. It is first shown that the transition front is continuously differentiable in space with uniformly bounded and uniformly Lipschitz continuous space partial derivative. This is the first time that regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal equations is ever studied. It is then shown that the transition front is uniformly steep. Finally, asymptotic stability, in the sense of exponentially attracting front like initial data, of the transition front is studied.

Regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal dispersal evolution equations

It is known that solutions of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations do not become smoother in space as time elapses. This lack of space regularity would cause a lot of difficulties in studying transition fronts in nonlocal equations. In the present paper, we establish some general criteria concerning space regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal dispersal evolution equations with a large class of nonlinearities, which allows the applicability of various techniques for reaction-diffusion equations to nonlocal equation, and hence serves as an initial and fundamental step for further studying various qualitative properties of transition fronts such as stability and uniqueness. We also prove the existence of continuously differentiable and increasing interface location functions, which give a better characterization of the propagation of transition fronts and are of great technical importance.

Spreading Speeds and Linear Determinacy for Two Species Competition Systems with Nonlocal Dispersal in Periodic Habitats

The current paper is concerned with the existence of spreading speeds and linear determinacy for two species competition systems with nonlocal dispersal in time and space periodic habitats. The notion of spreading speed intervals for such a system is first introduced via the natural features of spreading speeds. The existence and lower bounds of spreading speed intervals are then established. When the periodic dependence of the habitat is only on the time variable, the existence of a single spreading speed is proved. It also shows that, under certain conditions, the spreading speed interval in any direction is a singleton, and, moreover, the linear determinacy holds.

Stability, Uniqueness and Recurrence of Generalized Traveling Waves in Time Heterogeneous Media of Ignition Type

The present paper is devoted to the study of stability, uniqueness and recurrence of generalized traveling waves of reaction-diffusion equations in time heterogeneous media of ignition type, whose existence has been proven by the authors of the present paper in a previous work. It is first shown that generalized traveling waves exponentially attract wave-like initial data. Next, properties of generalized traveling waves, such as space monotonicity and exponential decay ahead of interface, are obtained. Uniqueness up to space translations of generalized traveling waves is then proven. Finally, it is shown that the wave profile of the unique generalized traveling wave is of the same recurrence as the media. In particular, if the media is time almost periodic, then so is the wave profile of the unique generalized traveling wave.

Transition fronts in nonlocal equations with time heterogeneous ignition nonlinearity

The present paper is devoted to the study of transition fronts in nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations with time heterogeneous nonlinearity of ignition type. It is proven that such an equation admits space monotone transition fronts with finite speed and space regularity in the sense of uniform Lipschitz continuity. Our approach is first constructing a sequence of approximating front-like solutions and then proving that the approximating solutions converge to a transition front. We take advantage of the idea of modified interface location, which allows us to characterize the finite speed of approximating solutions in the absence of space regularity, and leads directly to uniform exponential decaying estimates.

Transition fronts in nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media

The present paper is devoted to the study of transition fronts of nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. We first construct transition fronts with prescribed interface location functions, which are natural generalizations of front location functions in homogeneous media. It it shown that these transition fronts have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Then, by the general results on space regularity of transition fronts of nonlocal evolution equations proven in the authors' earlier work (\cite{ShSh14-4}), these transition fronts are continuously differentiable in space. We show that their space partial derivatives have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Finally, we study the asymptotic stability of transition fronts. It is shown that transition fronts attract those solutions whose initial data decays as fast as transition fronts near infinity and essentially above zero near negative infinity.

The current paper is devoted to the investigation of wave propagation phenomenon in reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearity in time heterogeneous and random media. It is proven that such equations in time heterogeneous media admit transition fronts or generalized traveling wave solutions with time dependent profiles and that such equations in time random media admit generalized traveling wave solutions with random profiles. Important properties of generalized traveling wave solutions, including the boundedness of propagation speeds and the uniform decaying estimates of the propagation fronts, are also obtained.

Liouville Type Property and Spreading Speeds of KPP Equations in Periodic Media with Localized Spatial Inhomogeneity

The current paper is devoted to the study of semilinear dispersal evolution equations of the form $$ u_t(t,x)=(\mathcal{A}u)(t,x)+u(t,x)f(t,x,u(t,x)),\quad x\in\mathcal{H}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}=\RR^N$ or $\ZZ^N$, $\mathcal{A}$ is a random dispersal operator or nonlocal dispersal operator in the case $\mathcal{H}=\RR^N$ and is a discrete dispersal operator in the case $\mathcal{H}=\ZZ^N$, and $f$ is periodic in $t$, asymptotically periodic in $x$ (i.e. $f(t,x,u)-f_0(t,x,u)$ converges to 0 as $\|x\|\to\infty$ for some time and space periodic function $f_0(t,x,u)$), and is of KPP type in $u$. It is proved that Liouville type property for such equations holds, that is, time periodic strictly positive solutions are unique. It is also proved that if $u\equiv 0$ is a linearly unstable solution to the time and space periodic limit equation of such an equation, then it has a unique stable time periodic strictly positive solution and has a spatial spreading speed in every direction.

One-dimensional random attractor and rotation number of the stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation

This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic dynamics of the stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. It is shown that for any positive damping and diffusion coefficients, the equation possesses a random attractor, and when the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficiently large, the random attractor is a one-dimensional random horizontal curve regardless of the strength of noise. Hence its dynamics is not chaotic. It is also shown that the equation has a rotation number provided that the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficiently large, which implies that the solutions tend to oscillate with the same frequency eventually and the so called frequency locking is successful.

Principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet spaces of positive random dynamical systems. I. General theory

This is the first of a series of papers concerned with principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet subspaces of positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. It focuses on the development of general theory. First, the notions of generalized principal Floquet subspaces, generalized principal Lyapunov exponents, and generalized exponential separations for general positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces are introduced, which extend the classical notions of principal Floquet subspaces, principal Lyapunov exponents, and exponential separations for strongly positive deterministic systems in strongly ordered Banach to general positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. Under some quite general assumptions, it is then shown that a positive random dynamical system in an ordered Banach space admits a family of generalized principal Floquet subspaces, a generalized principal Lyapunov exponent, and a generalized exponential separation. We will consider in the forthcoming parts applications of the general theory developed in this part to positive random dynamical systems arising from a variety of random mappings and differential equations, including random Leslie matrix models, random cooperative systems of ordinary differential equations, and random parabolic equations.

Spreading Speeds and Traveling Waves of Nonlocal Monostable Equations in Time and Space Periodic Habitats

This paper is devoted to the investigation of spatial spreading speeds and traveling wave solutions of monostable evolution equations with nonlocal dispersal in time and space periodic habitats. It has been shown in an earlier work by the first two authors of the current paper that such an equation has a unique time and space periodic positive stable solution $u^*(t,x)$. In this paper, we show that such an equation has a spatial spreading speed $c^*(ξ)$ in the direction of any given unit vector $ξ$. A variational characterization of $c^*(ξ)$ is given. Under the assumption that the nonlocal dispersal operator associated to the linearization of the monostable equation at the trivial solution $0$ has a principal eigenvalue, we also show that the monostable equation has a continuous periodic traveling wave solution connecting $u^*(\cdot,\cdot)$ and $0$ propagating in any given direction of $ξ$ with speed $c>c^*(ξ)$.

This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic dynamics of a class of coupled second order oscillators driven by white noises. It is shown that any system of such coupled oscillators with positive damping and coupling coefficients possesses a global random attractor. Moreover, when the damping and the coupling coefficients are sufficiently large, the global random attractor is a one-dimensional random horizontal curve regardless of the strength of the noises, and the system has a rotation number, which implies that the oscillators in the system tend to oscillate with the same frequency eventually and therefore the so called frequency locking is successful. The results obtained in this paper generalize many existing results on the asymptotic dynamics for a single second order noisy oscillator to systems of coupled second order noisy oscillators. They show that coupled damped second order oscillators with large damping have similar asymptotic dynamics as the limiting coupled first order oscillators as the damping goes to infinite and also that coupled damped second order oscillators have similar asymptotic dynamics as their proper space continuous counterparts, which are of great practical importance.

Positive Stationary Solutions and Spreading Speeds of KPP Equations in Locally Spatially Inhomogeneous Media

The current paper is concerned with positive stationary solutions and spatial spreading speeds of KPP type evolution equations with random or nonlocal or discrete dispersal in locally spatially inhomogeneous media. It is shown that such an equation has a unique globally stable positive stationary solution and has a spreading speed in every direction. Moreover, it is shown that the localized spatial inhomogeneity of the medium neither slows down nor speeds up the spatial spreading in all the directions.

Traveling Wave Solutions of Spatially Periodic Nonlocal Monostable Equations

This paper deals with front propagation dynamics of monostable equations with nonlocal dispersal in spatially periodic habitats. In the authors' earlier works, it is shown that a general spatially periodic monostable equation with nonlocal dispersal has a unique spatially periodic positive stationary solution and has a spreading speed in every direction. In this paper, we show that a spatially periodic nonlocal monostable equation with certain spatial homogeneity or small nonlocal dispersal distance has a unique stable periodic traveling wave solutions connecting its unique spatially periodic positive stationary solution and the trivial solution in every direction for all speeds greater than the spreading speed in that direction.
