Superconductivity in the nodal-line compound La$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$

Owing to the specific topological states in nodal-line semimetals, novel topological superconductivity is expected to emerge in these systems. In this letter, by combination of the first-principles calculations and resistivity, susceptibility and specific heat measurements, we demonstrate that La$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$ is a topologically nontrivial nodal-ring semimetal protected by the gliding-mirror symmetry even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Meanwhile, we discover bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature of $\sim$1.1 K, and an upper critical field of $\sim$0.41 T. These findings demonstrate that La$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$ provides a material platform for studying novel superconductivity in the nodal-ring system.

Metamagnetic transitions and anomalous magnetoresistance in EuAg$_4$As$_2$ single crystal

In this paper, the magnetic and transport properties were systematically studied for EuAg$_4$As$_2$ single crystals, crystallizing in a centrosymmetric trigonal CaCu$_4$P$_2$ type structure. It was confirmed that two magnetic transitions occur at $\textit{T}$$_{N1}$ = 10 K and $\textit{T}$$_{N2}$ = 15 K, respectively. With the increasing field, the two transitions are noticeably driven to lower temperature. At low temperatures, applying a magnetic field in the $\textit{ab}$ plane induces two successive metamagnetic transitions. For both $\textit{H}$ $\parallel$ $\textit{ab}$ and $\textit{H}$ $\parallel$ $\textit{c}$, EuAg$_4$As$_2$ shows a positive, unexpected large magnetoresistance (up to 202\%) at low fields below 10 K, and a large negative magnetoresistance (up to -78\%) at high fields/intermediate temperatures. Such anomalous field dependence of magnetoresistance may have potential application in the future magnetic sensors. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams of EuAg$_{4}$As$_{2}$ were constructed for both $\textit{H}$ $\parallel$ $\textit{ab}$ and $\textit{H}$ $\parallel$ $\textit{c}$.

Prediction of Ternary Fluorooxoborates with Coplanar Triangle Units [BOxF3-x]x- From First-Principles

Ten new ternary fluorooxoborate structures were obtained from first-principles prediction. Coplanar aligned triangle structure units [BO2F]2- and [BOF2]- like [BO3]3- in borates were found from the computational simulation. We identified new covalent coordination patterns of the F atom connected with the B atoms which are located in the bridging site, -B--F--B-. Besides, one molecular crystal with [B4O4F4] molecular unit was attached.

Upward curvature of the upper critical field and the V-shaped pressure dependence of $T_c$ in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

The temperature evolution of the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$ was determined via resistivity measurements down to 0.5 K. A pronounced positive curvature in the $H_{c2}$-$T$ phase diagram was observed in the whole temperature range below $T_c$. The Seebeck coefficient $S(T)$ in the temperature range 5K$\leq$$T$$\leq$350K was found to be negative in sign, modest in magnitude and non-linear in temperature. In addition, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ under hydrostatic pressure shows a marked non-monotonic variation, decreasing initially with the applied pressure up to $P_c$$\sim$5-10 kbar but then rising with further pressurization. The underlying physical mechanisms of all these findings have been discussed.

Landau level states on a topological insulator thin film

We analyze the four-dimensional Hamiltonian proposed to describe the band structure of the single-Dirac-cone family of topological insulators in the presence of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field. Surface Landau level(LL) states appear, decoupled from the bulk levels and following the quantized energy dispersion of a purely two-dimensional surface Dirac Hamiltonian. A small hybridization gap splits the degeneracy of the central n=0 LL with dependence on the film thickness and the field strength that can be obtained analytically. Explicit calculation of the spin and charge densities show that surface LL states are localized within approximately one quintuple layer from the surface termination. Some new surface-bound LLs are shown to exist at a higher Landau level index.

Skyrmion Lattice in Two-Dimensional Chiral Magnet

We develop a theory of the magnetic field-induced formation of Skyrmion crystal state in chiral magnets in two spatial dimensions, motivated by the recent discovery of the Skyrmionic phase of magnetization in thin film of Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Si and in the A-phase of MnSi. Ginzburg-Landau functional of the chiral magnet re-written in the CP$^1$ representation is shown to be a convenient framework for the analysis of the Skyrmion states. Phase diagram of the model at zero temperature gives a sequence of ground states, helical spin $\rightarrow$ Skyrme crystal $\rightarrow$ ferromagnet, as the external field $B$ increases, in good accord with the thin-film experiment. In close analogy with Abrikosov's derivation of the vortex lattice solution in type-II superconductor, the CP$^1$ mean-field equation is solved and shown to reproduce the Skyrmion crystal state.

Hierarchy of Spin and Valley Symmetry Breaking in Quantum Hall Single Layer Graphene

We explore several microscopic mechanisms for breaking the $n=0$ fourfold Landau level degeneracy in a single-layer graphene. Valley-scattering random potential, Zeeman interaction, and electron-phonon coupling are considered in the presence of SU(4)-symmetric Coulomb exchange interaction. Among all the mechanisms considered, it is the electron-phonon coupling combined with the Zeeman interaction which leads to the full splitting of the $n=0$ Landau levels. A recent controversy of "valley-first" or "spin-first" breaking of SU(4) symmetry of the $n=0$ graphene Landau level is examined in light of our results. Existence of midgap states between Landau levels of opposite valley polarity are demonstrated.
