DynaTrain: Fast Online Parallelism Switching for Elastic LLM Training

Modern large language model (LLM) training is inherently dynamic: resource fluctuations, RLHF phase shifts, and cluster elasticity continually reshape the optimal parallelism layout, posing a significant challenge to existing training frameworks built around a static execution model. We present DynaTrain, a distributed training system for sub-second, online reconfiguration across arbitrary multi-dimensional parallelism. At its core, we propose a Virtual Parameter Space (VPS) abstraction that unifies all distributed training states under one logical coordinate space, turning any parallelism configuration into a deterministic mapping and collapsing complex transition into manageable geometric intersections. On top of VPS, a state routing-and-transition layer executes rank-local transfers under a memory-aware, deadlock-free schedule, and an Elastic Device Manager overlaps new-world construction with ongoing training to mask topology-change cost. On dense and MoE models up to 235B parameters, DynaTrain reconfigures a 70B dense model in under 2s and a 235B MoE model in 4.36s, outperforming state-of-the-art checkpoint-based and elastic systems by up to three orders of magnitude while preserving correctness.

$D^+D^-$ hadronic atom and its production in $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ collisions

There must be Coulomb bound states of a pair of hadrons, which are stable against the strong interaction, with opposite electric charges. Such bound states are hadronic atoms. We study the properties and the production of the ground-state $D^+D^-$ hadronic atom $A_{D^+D^-}$, called dionium, with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=0^{++}$. Using a nonrelativistic effective field theory for the $D^0\bar{D}^0$-$D^+D^-$ coupled-channel system, the mass of the ground-state dionium is predicted to be $(3739.3 \pm 0.1)~\text{MeV}$, with the binding energy reduced by about 10% compared to the Coulomb binding energy due to the strong interaction. Its width for the decay into the neutral $D^0\bar D^0$ channel is predicted to be $1.8^{+1.4}_{-0.6}$ keV using lattice inputs for the $D\bar D$ strong interaction. The cross section for the inclusive prompt production of the dionium at CMS and LHCb and that for the direct production $p\bar p\to A_{D^+D^-}$ at PANDA are estimated at an order-of-magnitude level. In particular, we expect that $\mathcal{O}(10^3\sim 10^5)$ events of the reaction chain $p\bar p\to A_{D^+D^-}\to D^0\bar D^0 \to K^-π^+K^+π^-$ can be collected at PANDA, and valuable information on the charmed meson interaction and on understanding charmoniumlike states will be obtained.

A Safe Semi-supervised Graph Convolution Network

In the semi-supervised learning field, Graph Convolution Network (GCN), as a variant model of GNN, has achieved promising results for non-Euclidean data by introducing convolution into GNN. However, GCN and its variant models fail to safely use the information of risk unlabeled data, which will degrade the performance of semi-supervised learning. Therefore, we propose a Safe GCN framework (Safe-GCN) to improve the learning performance. In the Safe-GCN, we design an iterative process to label the unlabeled data. In each iteration, a GCN and its supervised version(S-GCN) are learned to find the unlabeled data with high confidence. The high-confidence unlabeled data and their pseudo labels are then added to the label set. Finally, both added unlabeled data and labeled ones are used to train a S-GCN which can achieve the safe exploration of the risk unlabeled data and enable safe use of large numbers of unlabeled data. The performance of Safe-GCN is evaluated on three well-known citation network datasets and the obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework over several graph-based semi-supervised learning methods.

AMCAD: Adaptive Mixed-Curvature Representation based Advertisement Retrieval System

Graph embedding based retrieval has become one of the most popular techniques in the information retrieval community and search engine industry. The classical paradigm mainly relies on the flat Euclidean geometry. In recent years, hyperbolic (negative curvature) and spherical (positive curvature) representation methods have shown their superiority to capture hierarchical and cyclic data structures respectively. However, in industrial scenarios such as e-commerce sponsored search platforms, the large-scale heterogeneous query-item-advertisement interaction graphs often have multiple structures coexisting. Existing methods either only consider a single geometry space, or combine several spaces manually, which are incapable and inflexible to model the complexity and heterogeneity in the real scenario. To tackle this challenge, we present a web-scale Adaptive Mixed-Curvature ADvertisement retrieval system (AMCAD) to automatically capture the complex and heterogeneous graph structures in non-Euclidean spaces. Specifically, entities are represented in adaptive mixed-curvature spaces, where the types and curvatures of the subspaces are trained to be optimal combinations. Besides, an attentive edge-wise space projector is designed to model the similarities between heterogeneous nodes according to local graph structures and the relation types. Moreover, to deploy AMCAD in Taobao, one of the largest ecommerce platforms with hundreds of million users, we design an efficient two-layer online retrieval framework for the task of graph based advertisement retrieval. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets and A/B tests on online traffic are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Artificial Intelligence Enables Real-Time and Intuitive Control of Prostheses via Nerve Interface

Objective: The next generation prosthetic hand that moves and feels like a real hand requires a robust neural interconnection between the human minds and machines. Methods: Here we present a neuroprosthetic system to demonstrate that principle by employing an artificial intelligence (AI) agent to translate the amputee's movement intent through a peripheral nerve interface. The AI agent is designed based on the recurrent neural network (RNN) and could simultaneously decode six degree-of-freedom (DOF) from multichannel nerve data in real-time. The decoder's performance is characterized in motor decoding experiments with three human amputees. Results: First, we show the AI agent enables amputees to intuitively control a prosthetic hand with individual finger and wrist movements up to 97-98% accuracy. Second, we demonstrate the AI agent's real-time performance by measuring the reaction time and information throughput in a hand gesture matching task. Third, we investigate the AI agent's long-term uses and show the decoder's robust predictive performance over a 16-month implant duration. Conclusion & significance: Our study demonstrates the potential of AI-enabled nerve technology, underling the next generation of dexterous and intuitive prosthetic hands.

Cross section measurements of the processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0}$ and $ωη$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Born cross sections of the processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0}$ and $e^+e^- \rightarrow ωη$ are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. A simple $s^{-n}$ dependence for the continuum process can describe the measured Born cross sections. No significant contributions from the $ψ(4160)$, $Y(4230)$, $Y(4360)$, $ψ(4415)$, $Y(4660)$ resonances are found, which indicates relative small branching fractions for these resonances into the $ωπ^{0}$ and $ωη$ final states.

DFG-NAS: Deep and Flexible Graph Neural Architecture Search

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been intensively applied to various graph-based applications. Despite their success, manually designing the well-behaved GNNs requires immense human expertise. And thus it is inefficient to discover the potentially optimal data-specific GNN architecture. This paper proposes DFG-NAS, a new neural architecture search (NAS) method that enables the automatic search of very deep and flexible GNN architectures. Unlike most existing methods that focus on micro-architectures, DFG-NAS highlights another level of design: the search for macro-architectures on how atomic propagation (\textbf{\texttt{P}}) and transformation (\textbf{\texttt{T}}) operations are integrated and organized into a GNN. To this end, DFG-NAS proposes a novel search space for \textbf{\texttt{P-T}} permutations and combinations based on message-passing dis-aggregation, defines four custom-designed macro-architecture mutations, and employs the evolutionary algorithm to conduct an efficient and effective search. Empirical studies on four node classification tasks demonstrate that DFG-NAS outperforms state-of-the-art manual designs and NAS methods of GNNs.

Graph Attention MLP with Reliable Label Utilization

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have recently achieved state-of-the-art performance in many graph-based applications. Despite the high expressive power, they typically need to perform an expensive recursive neighborhood expansion in multiple training epochs and face a scalability issue. Moreover, most of them are inflexible since they are restricted to fixed-hop neighborhoods and insensitive to actual receptive field demands for different nodes. We circumvent these limitations by introducing a scalable and flexible Graph Attention Multilayer Perceptron (GAMLP). With the separation of the non-linear transformation and feature propagation, GAMLP significantly improves the scalability and efficiency by performing the propagation procedure in a pre-compute manner. With three principled receptive field attention, each node in GAMLP is flexible and adaptive in leveraging the propagated features over the different sizes of reception field. We conduct extensive evaluations on the three large open graph benchmarks (e.g., ogbn-papers100M, ogbn-products and ogbn-mag), demonstrating that GAMLP not only achieves the state-of-art performance, but also additionally provide high scalability and efficiency.

Graph Attention Multi-Layer Perceptron

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved great success in many graph-based applications. However, the enormous size and high sparsity level of graphs hinder their applications under industrial scenarios. Although some scalable GNNs are proposed for large-scale graphs, they adopt a fixed $K$-hop neighborhood for each node, thus facing the over-smoothing issue when adopting large propagation depths for nodes within sparse regions. To tackle the above issue, we propose a new GNN architecture -- Graph Attention Multi-Layer Perceptron (GAMLP), which can capture the underlying correlations between different scales of graph knowledge. We have deployed GAMLP in Tencent with the Angel platform, and we further evaluate GAMLP on both real-world datasets and large-scale industrial datasets. Extensive experiments on these 14 graph datasets demonstrate that GAMLP achieves state-of-the-art performance while enjoying high scalability and efficiency. Specifically, it outperforms GAT by 1.3\% regarding predictive accuracy on our large-scale Tencent Video dataset while achieving up to $50\times$ training speedup. Besides, it ranks top-1 on both the leaderboards of the largest homogeneous and heterogeneous graph (i.e., ogbn-papers100M and ogbn-mag) of Open Graph Benchmark.

Information Gain Propagation: a new way to Graph Active Learning with Soft Labels

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved great success in various tasks, but their performance highly relies on a large number of labeled nodes, which typically requires considerable human effort. GNN-based Active Learning (AL) methods are proposed to improve the labeling efficiency by selecting the most valuable nodes to label. Existing methods assume an oracle can correctly categorize all the selected nodes and thus just focus on the node selection. However, such an exact labeling task is costly, especially when the categorization is out of the domain of individual expert (oracle). The paper goes further, presenting a soft-label approach to AL on GNNs. Our key innovations are: i) relaxed queries where a domain expert (oracle) only judges the correctness of the predicted labels (a binary question) rather than identifying the exact class (a multi-class question), and ii) new criteria of maximizing information gain propagation for active learner with relaxed queries and soft labels. Empirical studies on public datasets demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art GNN-based AL methods in terms of both accuracy and labeling cost.

Instance-wise Prompt Tuning for Pretrained Language Models

Prompt Learning has recently gained great popularity in bridging the gap between pretraining tasks and various downstream tasks. It freezes Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) and only tunes a few task-related parameters (prompts) for downstream tasks, greatly reducing the cost of tuning giant models. The key enabler of this is the idea of querying PLMs with task-specific knowledge implicated in prompts. This paper reveals a major limitation of existing methods that the indiscriminate prompts for all input data in a task ignore the intrinsic knowledge from input data, resulting in sub-optimal performance. We introduce Instance-wise Prompt Tuning (IPT), the first prompt learning paradigm that injects knowledge from the input data instances to the prompts, thereby providing PLMs with richer and more concrete context information. We devise a series of strategies to produce instance-wise prompts, addressing various concerns like model quality and cost-efficiency. Across multiple tasks and resource settings, IPT significantly outperforms task-based prompt learning methods, and achieves comparable performance to conventional finetuning with only 0.5% - 1.5% of tuned parameters.

Measurement of $Λ$ baryon polarization in $e^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$ GeV

Using a data sample of $ψ(3770)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{-1}$, we report a measurement of $Λ$ spin polarization in $e^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$ GeV. The significance of polarization is found to be 2$σ$ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the $Λ\barΛ$ helicity states. This phase can be interpreted in terms of psionic form factors, and is determined to be $ΔΦ^Ψ$ = $Φ^Ψ_{E} - Φ^Ψ_{M}$ = $(71^{+66}_{-46}$ $\pm$ 5)$^{\circ}$. Similarly, the ratio between the form factors is found to be $R^ψ$ = $|G^Ψ_{E}/G^Ψ_{M}|$ = $0.48^{+0.12}_{-0.07}$ $\pm$ 0.04. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the $D \to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^-π^+π^0$ coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated ${D\bar{D}}$ decays

The decays $D\to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^-π^+π^0$ are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ pairs produced through the process $e^+e^- \to ψ(3770) \to D\bar{D}$, exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$. Here $D$ indicates a quantum superposition of a $D^0$ and a $\bar{D}^0$ meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle $γ$ of the Unitarity Triangle in $B^- \to DK^-$ decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be $R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$ and $R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04$, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are $δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ$ and $δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ$, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the $D \to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of $γ$ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6$^\circ$.

The branching fraction for this decay is determined to be $\mathcal{B}_{ψ(3686)\to ωK_{S}^{0}K^{0}_{S}}$=$(7.04\pm0.39\pm0.36)$$\times10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Taking the world averages of the branching fractions of $D^0\to K_S^0ϕ$, $D^0\to K_S^0η$, $D^0\to K_S^0ω$, and $D^0\to K_S^0η^{\prime}$, the $K_S^0$-$K_L^0$ asymmetry $\mathcal{R}(D^0)$ in these decay modes are obtained. The CP asymmetries in these decays are also determined. No significant $CP$ violation is observed.

By analyzing an electron-positron collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.93\,\rm fb^{-1}$ taken at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we obtain for the first time the absolute branching fractions for seven $D^0$ and $D^+$ hadronic decay modes and search for the hadronic decay $D^0\to K^0_S K^0_Sπ^0$ with much improved sensitivity. The results are ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^0_Sπ^0π^0π^0 )=( 7.64\pm 0.30\pm 0.29)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0π^0π^0 )=( 9.54\pm 0.30\pm 0.31)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^0_Sπ^+π^-π^0π^0)=(12.66\pm 0.45\pm 0.43)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^0π^0 )=(29.04\pm 0.62\pm 0.87)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^+π^-π^0)=(15.28\pm 0.57\pm 0.60)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^0π^0π^0)=( 5.54\pm 0.44\pm 0.32)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^-π^+π^+π^0π^0 )=( 4.95\pm 0.26\pm 0.19)\times 10^{-3}$, ${\mathcal B}({D^0\to K^0_S K^0_Sπ^0}) < 1.57 \times 10^{-4}$ at the 90\% confidence level. Here the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The newly studied decays greatly enrich the knowledge of the $D\to \bar Kπππ$ and $D\to \bar Kππππ$ hadronic decays, and open a bridge to access more two-body hadronic $D$ decays containing scalar, vector, axial and tensor mesons in the charm sector.

Model Degradation Hinders Deep Graph Neural Networks

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved great success in various graph mining tasks. However, drastic performance degradation is always observed when a GNN is stacked with many layers. As a result, most GNNs only have shallow architectures, which limits their expressive power and exploitation of deep neighborhoods. Most recent studies attribute the performance degradation of deep GNNs to the \textit{over-smoothing} issue. In this paper, we disentangle the conventional graph convolution operation into two independent operations: \textit{Propagation} (\textbf{P}) and \textit{Transformation} (\textbf{T}).Following this, the depth of a GNN can be split into the propagation depth ($D_p$) and the transformation depth ($D_t$). Through extensive experiments, we find that the major cause for the performance degradation of deep GNNs is the \textit{model degradation} issue caused by large $D_t$ rather than the \textit{over-smoothing} issue mainly caused by large $D_p$. Further, we present \textit{Adaptive Initial Residual} (AIR), a plug-and-play module compatible with all kinds of GNN architectures, to alleviate the \textit{model degradation} issue and the \textit{over-smoothing} issue simultaneously. Experimental results on six real-world datasets demonstrate that GNNs equipped with AIR outperform most GNNs with shallow architectures owing to the benefits of both large $D_p$ and $D_t$, while the time costs associated with AIR can be ignored.

NAFS: A Simple yet Tough-to-beat Baseline for Graph Representation Learning

Recently, graph neural networks (GNNs) have shown prominent performance in graph representation learning by leveraging knowledge from both graph structure and node features. However, most of them have two major limitations. First, GNNs can learn higher-order structural information by stacking more layers but can not deal with large depth due to the over-smoothing issue. Second, it is not easy to apply these methods on large graphs due to the expensive computation cost and high memory usage. In this paper, we present node-adaptive feature smoothing (NAFS), a simple non-parametric method that constructs node representations without parameter learning. NAFS first extracts the features of each node with its neighbors of different hops by feature smoothing, and then adaptively combines the smoothed features. Besides, the constructed node representation can further be enhanced by the ensemble of smoothed features extracted via different smoothing strategies. We conduct experiments on four benchmark datasets on two different application scenarios: node clustering and link prediction. Remarkably, NAFS with feature ensemble outperforms the state-of-the-art GNNs on these tasks and mitigates the aforementioned two limitations of most learning-based GNN counterparts.

Novel coupled channel framework connecting quark model and lattice QCD: an investigation on near-threshold $D_s$ states

A novel framework is proposed to extract near-threshold resonant states from finite-volume energy levels of lattice QCD and is applied to elucidate structures of the positive parity $D_s$. The quark model, the quark-pair-creation mechanism and $D^{(*)}K$ interaction are incorporated into the Hamiltonian effective field theory. The bare $1^+$ $c\bar s$ states are almost purely given by the states with heavy-quark spin bases. The physical $D^*_{s0}(2317)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2460)$ are the mixtures of bare $c\bar s$ core and $D^{(*)}K$ component, while the $D^*_{s1}(2536)$ and $D^*_{s2}(2573)$ are almost dominated by bare $c\bar{s}$. Furthermore, our model reproduces the clear level crossing of the $D^*_{s1}(2536)$ with the scattering state at a finite volume.

The singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+}$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $7.3σ$ by using 3.9 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.612 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. The branching fraction of $Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+}$ is measured to be $(6.6\pm1.2_{\rm stat}\pm0.4_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}$. PaSca: a Graph Neural Architecture Search System under the Scalable Paradigm

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance in various graph-based tasks. However, as mainstream GNNs are designed based on the neural message passing mechanism, they do not scale well to data size and message passing steps. Although there has been an emerging interest in the design of scalable GNNs, current researches focus on specific GNN design, rather than the general design space, limiting the discovery of potential scalable GNN models. This paper proposes PasCa, a new paradigm and system that offers a principled approach to systemically construct and explore the design space for scalable GNNs, rather than studying individual designs. Through deconstructing the message passing mechanism, PasCa presents a novel Scalable Graph Neural Architecture Paradigm (SGAP), together with a general architecture design space consisting of 150k different designs. Following the paradigm, we implement an auto-search engine that can automatically search well-performing and scalable GNN architectures to balance the trade-off between multiple criteria (e.g., accuracy and efficiency) via multi-objective optimization. Empirical studies on ten benchmark datasets demonstrate that the representative instances (i.e., PasCa-V1, V2, and V3) discovered by our system achieve consistent performance among competitive baselines. Concretely, PasCa-V3 outperforms the state-of-the-art GNN method JK-Net by 0.4\% in terms of predictive accuracy on our large industry dataset while achieving up to $28.3\times$ training speedups.

It is based on an $e^+e^-$ collision sample consisting of $10.6\times10^{6}$ pairs of $D^0\bar{D}^0$ mesons collected by the BESIII detector at $\sqrt{s}$=3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93~fb$^{-1}$. A data-driven method is used to ensure the reliability of the background modeling. No significant $D^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν$ signal is observed in data and an upper limit of the branching fraction is set to be $2.1\times 10^{-4}$ at the 90$\%$ confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint on charmed-hadron decays into dineutrino final states.

Search for the decay $h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ$

A search for the decay $h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ$ is performed using a sample of $h_c$ produced in the reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-h_c$. The data samples were collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.189 and 4.437 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb$^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching ratio $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ)/\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowγη_c\rightarrowγK^+K^-π^0)$ and on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ)$ are determined to be $7.5\times10^{-2}$ and $4.7\times10^{-4}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, respectively. The latter is derived from the former using the measured branching fraction of the normalization channel. This is the first determination of the upper limit of the decay $h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ$.

The investigations of the $P$-wave $B_s$ states combining quark model and lattice QCD in the coupled channel framework

Combining the quark model, the quark-pair-creation mechanism and $B^{(*)}\bar K$ interaction, we have investigated the near-threshold $P$-wave $B_s$ states in the framework of the Hamiltonian effective field theory. With the heavy quark flavor symmetry, all the parameters are determined in the $D_s$ sector by fitting the lattice data. The masses of the bottom-strange partners of the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)$ and $D^{*}_{s1}(2460)$ are predicted to be $M_{B^{*}_{s0}}=5730.2_{-1.5}^{+2.4}$ MeV and $M_{B^{*}_{s1}}= 5769.6_{-1.6}^{+2.4}$ MeV, respectively, which are well consistent with the lattice QCD simulation. The two $P$-wave $B_s$ states are the mixtures of the bare $\bar b s$ core and $B^{(*)}\bar K$ component. Moreover, we find a crossing point between the energy levels with and without the interaction Hamiltonian in the finite volume spectrum in the $0^+$ case, which corresponds to a CDD (Castillejo-Dalitz-Dyson) zero in the $T$-matrix of the $B\bar K$ scattering. This CDD zero will help deepen the insights of the near-threshold states and can be examined by future lattice calculation.

TransBO: Hyperparameter Optimization via Two-Phase Transfer Learning

With the extensive applications of machine learning models, automatic hyperparameter optimization (HPO) has become increasingly important. Motivated by the tuning behaviors of human experts, it is intuitive to leverage auxiliary knowledge from past HPO tasks to accelerate the current HPO task. In this paper, we propose TransBO, a novel two-phase transfer learning framework for HPO, which can deal with the complementary nature among source tasks and dynamics during knowledge aggregation issues simultaneously. This framework extracts and aggregates source and target knowledge jointly and adaptively, where the weights can be learned in a principled manner. The extensive experiments, including static and dynamic transfer learning settings and neural architecture search, demonstrate the superiority of TransBO over the state-of-the-arts.

Unified Normalization for Accelerating and Stabilizing Transformers

Solid results from Transformers have made them prevailing architectures in various natural language and vision tasks. As a default component in Transformers, Layer Normalization (LN) normalizes activations within each token to boost the robustness. However, LN requires on-the-fly statistics calculation in inference as well as division and square root operations, leading to inefficiency on hardware. What is more, replacing LN with other hardware-efficient normalization schemes (e.g., Batch Normalization) results in inferior performance, even collapse in training. We find that this dilemma is caused by abnormal behaviors of activation statistics, including large fluctuations over iterations and extreme outliers across layers. To tackle these issues, we propose Unified Normalization (UN), which can speed up the inference by being fused with other linear operations and achieve comparable performance on par with LN. UN strives to boost performance by calibrating the activation and gradient statistics with a tailored fluctuation smoothing strategy. Meanwhile, an adaptive outlier filtration strategy is applied to avoid collapse in training whose effectiveness is theoretically proved and experimentally verified in this paper. We demonstrate that UN can be an efficient drop-in alternative to LN by conducting extensive experiments on language and vision tasks. Besides, we evaluate the efficiency of our method on GPU. Transformers equipped with UN enjoy about 31% inference speedup and nearly 18% memory reduction. Code will be released at https://github.com/hikvision-research/Unified-Normalization.

ZOOMER: Boosting Retrieval on Web-scale Graphs by Regions of Interest

We introduce ZOOMER, a system deployed at Taobao, the largest e-commerce platform in China, for training and serving GNN-based recommendations over web-scale graphs. ZOOMER is designed for tackling two challenges presented by the massive user data at Taobao: low training/serving efficiency due to the huge scale of the graphs, and low recommendation quality due to the information overload which distracts the recommendation model from specific user intentions. ZOOMER achieves this by introducing a key concept, Region of Interests (ROI) in GNNs for recommendations, i.e., a neighborhood region in the graph with significant relevance to a strong user intention. ZOOMER narrows the focus from the whole graph and "zooms in" on the more relevant ROIs, thereby reducing the training/serving cost and mitigating the information overload at the same time. With carefully designed mechanisms, ZOOMER identifies the interest expressed by each recommendation request, constructs an ROI subgraph by sampling with respect to the interest, and guides the GNN to reweigh different parts of the ROI towards the interest by a multi-level attention module. Deployed as a large-scale distributed system, ZOOMER supports graphs with billions of nodes for training and thousands of requests per second for serving. ZOOMER achieves up to 14x speedup when downsizing sampling scales with comparable (even better) AUC performance than baseline methods. Besides, both the offline evaluation and online A/B test demonstrate the effectiveness of ZOOMER.

Cross sections for the reactions $e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-π^+π^-(π^0)$, $K^+K^-K^+K^-(π^0)$, $π^+π^-π^+π^-(π^0)$, $p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0)$ in the energy region between 3.773 and 4.600 GeV

Using the data samples collected in the energy range from 3.773 to 4.600 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the dressed cross sections as a function of center-of-mass energy for $e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-π^+π^-(π^0)$, $K^+K^-K^+K^-(π^0)$, $π^+π^-π^+π^-(π^0)$, and $p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0)$. The cross sections for $e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-K^+K^-π^0$, $p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0)$ are the first measurements. Cross sections for the other five channels are much more precise than previous results in this energy region. We also search for charmonium and charmonium-like resonances, such as the $Y(4230)$, decaying into the same final states. We find evidence of the $ψ(4040)$ decaying to $π^+π^-π^+π^-π^0$ with a statistical significance of $3.6σ$. Upper limits are provided for other decays since no clear signals are observed.

Measurement of the $e^{+}e^{-}\toΣ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$ cross sections at center-of-mass energies from $2.3864$ to $3.0200$ GeV

The Born cross sections of $e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$ are measured at center-of-mass energies from $2.3864$ to $3.0200$ GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of $328.5$ pb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The analysis makes use of a novel reconstruction method for energies near production threshold, while a single-tag method is employed at other center-of-mass energies. The measured cross sections are consistent with earlier results from BaBar, with a substantially improved precision. The cross-section lineshape can be well described by a perturbative QCD-driven energy function. In addition, the effective form factors of the $Σ^{0}$ baryon are determined. The results provide precise experimental input for testing various theoretical predictions.

We find significant $η_{\rm c}$ production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow η_{\rm c}π^+ π^-π^0$ at $\sqrt{s}$ of 4.23 GeV and 4.26 GeV and observe a significant energy-dependent Born cross section that we measure to be consistent with the production via the intermediate $Y(4260)$ resonance. In addition, we perform a search for a charmonium-like $Z_{\rm c}$ state close to the $D\bar{D}$ threshold that decays to $η_{\rm c}π$, involving ground state charmonium, and observe no signal. Photoproduction of strange hidden-charm and hidden-bottom states

Recently BESIII collaboration discovered a charged strange hidden-charm state $Z_{cs}$(3985) in the $D_s^-D^{*0} + D_s^{*-}D^{0}$ spectrum. A higher $Z'_{cs}$ state coupling to $\bar{D}_s^{*-}D^{*0}$ is expected by SU(3)-flavor symmetry, and their bottom partners are anticipated by heavy quark flavor symmetry. Here we study the photoproduction of these exotic states and investigate carefully the background from Pomeron exchange. Our results indicate that the maximal photoproduction cross section of strange partner is around 1 $\sim$ 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of the corresponding non-strange states. The possibility of searching for them in future electron-ion colliders (EIC) is briefly discussed.

Weak phases and CP-symmetry tests in sequential decays of entangled double-strange baryons

Using a sample of $1.31\times10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the electron-positron collider BEPCII, we analyse the full $J/ψ\to$ $Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+$, $Ξ^-\to Λπ^-$, $Λ\to pπ^-$, $\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+$, $\overlineΛ\to\overline{p}π^+$ decay chain. A new method, exploiting the fact that the $Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+$ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the complete decay chains are reconstructed, is applied for the first time. This enables precision measurements of the decay parameters for the $Ξ^-\toΛπ^-$ decay ($α_Ξ$, $ϕ_Ξ$) as well as the $\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+$ decay ($\overlineα_Ξ$, $\overlineϕ_Ξ$). From the decay parameters, two independent CP tests were performed, quantified by the observables $A_{\rm CP}^Ξ$ and $Δϕ_Ξ$. Our results, $A_{\rm CP}^Ξ$ = $(6.0\pm13.4\pm5.6)\times10^{-3}$ and $Δϕ_Ξ= (-4.8\pm13.7\pm2.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm rad}$, are consistent with CP symmetry. Furthermore, our method enables a separation of strong and weak $Ξ\toΛπ$ decay amplitudes. This results in the first direct measurement of the weak phase difference for any baryon decay. The result is found to be $(ξ_{P} - ξ_{S}) = (1.2\pm3.4\pm0.8)\times10^{-2}$ rad and is one of the most precise tests of CP symmetry for strange baryons. The strong phase difference is measured to be $(δ_P - δ_S) = (-4.0\pm3.3\pm1.7)\times10^{-2}$ rad. In addition, we provide an independent measurement of the recently debated $Λ$ decay parameter, $α_Λ = 0.757 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008 $. The $Λ\overlineΛ$ asymmetry is measured to be $A_{\rm CP}^Λ = (-3.7\pm11.7\pm9.0)\times10^{-3}$.

$Σ^{+}$ and $\barΣ^-$ polarization in the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays

From $1310.6\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ and $448.1\times10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII experiment, we report the first observation of $Σ^{+}$ and $\barΣ^{-}$ spin polarization in $e^+e^-\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ(3686)) \rightarrow Σ^{+} \barΣ^{-}$ decays. The relative phases of the form factors $ΔΦ$ have been measured to be $(-15.5\pm0.7\pm0.5)^{\circ}$ and $(21.7\pm4.0\pm0.8)^{\circ}$ with $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ data, respectively. The non-zero value of $ΔΦ$ allows for a direct and simultaneous measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters of $Σ^{+}\rightarrow p π^{0}~(α_0 = -0.998\pm0.037\pm0.009)$ and $\barΣ^{-}\rightarrow \bar{p} π^{0}~(\barα_0 = 0.990\pm0.037\pm0.011)$, the latter value being determined for the first time. The average decay asymmetry, $(α_{0} - \barα_{0})/2$, is calculated to be $-0.994\pm0.004\pm0.002$. The CP asymmetry $A_{\rm CP,Σ} = (α_0 + \barα_0)/(α_0 - \barα_0) = -0.004\pm0.037\pm0.010$ is extracted for the first time, and is found to be consistent with CP conservation.

Erratum to "Measurement of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-$ cross section between 600 and 900 MeV using initial state radiation"

In Phys. Lett. B 753, 629-638 (2016) [arXiv:1507.08188] the BESIII collaboration published a cross section measurement of the process $e^+e^-\to π^+ π^-$ in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV. In this erratum we report a corrected evaluation of the statistical errors in terms of a fully propagated covariance matrix. The correction also yields a reduced statistical uncertainty for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which now reads as $a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}(600 - 900\,\mathrm{MeV}) = (368.2 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}$. The central values of the cross section measurement and of $a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}$, as well as the systematic uncertainties remain unchanged.

Fine-Grained Image Captioning with Global-Local Discriminative Objective

Significant progress has been made in recent years in image captioning, an active topic in the fields of vision and language. However, existing methods tend to yield overly general captions and consist of some of the most frequent words/phrases, resulting in inaccurate and indistinguishable descriptions (see Figure 1). This is primarily due to (i) the conservative characteristic of traditional training objectives that drives the model to generate correct but hardly discriminative captions for similar images and (ii) the uneven word distribution of the ground-truth captions, which encourages generating highly frequent words/phrases while suppressing the less frequent but more concrete ones. In this work, we propose a novel global-local discriminative objective that is formulated on top of a reference model to facilitate generating fine-grained descriptive captions. Specifically, from a global perspective, we design a novel global discriminative constraint that pulls the generated sentence to better discern the corresponding image from all others in the entire dataset. From the local perspective, a local discriminative constraint is proposed to increase attention such that it emphasizes the less frequent but more concrete words/phrases, thus facilitating the generation of captions that better describe the visual details of the given images. We evaluate the proposed method on the widely used MS-COCO dataset, where it outperforms the baseline methods by a sizable margin and achieves competitive performance over existing leading approaches. We also conduct self-retrieval experiments to demonstrate the discriminability of the proposed method.

The main concern here is to investigate the final state distribution in the phase space in order to extract the feeble pentaquark signal from the large non-resonant background. Inclusive charged and neutral particle multiplicity distributions in $χ_{cJ}$ and $J/ψ$ decays

Using a sample of 106 million $ψ(3686)$ decays, $ψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ} (J = 0, 1, 2)$ and $ψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ} \to γJ/ψ$ $(J = 1, 2)$ events are utilized to study inclusive $χ_{cJ} \to$ anything, $χ_{cJ} \to$ hadrons, and $J/ψ\to$ anything distributions, including distributions of the number of charged tracks, electromagnetic calorimeter showers, and $π^0$s, and to compare them with distributions obtained from the BESIII Monte Carlo simulation. Information from each Monte Carlo simulated decay event is used to construct matrices connecting the detected distributions to the input predetection "produced" distributions. Assuming these matrices also apply to data, they are used to predict the analogous produced distributions of the decay events. Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation.

Mechanical Properties of Atomically Thin Boron Nitride and the Role of Interlayer Interactions

Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets are important two-dimensional nanomaterials with many unique properties distinct from those of graphene, but the investigation of their mechanical properties still greatly lacks. Here we report that high-quality single-crystalline mono- and few-layer BN nanosheets are one of the strongest electrically insulating materials. More intriguingly, few-layer BN shows mechanical behaviors quite different from those of few-layer graphene under indentation. In striking contrast to graphene, whose strength decreases by more than 30% when the number of layers increases from 1 to 8, the mechanical strength of BN nanosheets is not sensitive to increasing thickness. We attribute this difference to the distinct interlayer interactions and hence sliding tendencies in these two materials under indentation. The significantly better mechanical integrity of BN nanosheets makes them a more attractive candidate than graphene for several applications, e.g. as mechanical reinforcements.

A resonance with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ is observed with mass $M$ = (2177.5 $\pm$ 4.8 (stat) $\pm$ 19.5 (syst)) MeV/${ \it{c}^{\mathrm{2}}}$ and width $Γ$ = (149.0 $\pm$ 15.6 (stat) $\pm$ 8.9 (syst)) MeV with a statistical significance larger than 10$σ$. The observed structure could be identified with the $ϕ(2170)$, then the ratio of partial width between the $ϕη^{\prime}$ by BESIII and $ϕη$ by BABAR is ($\mathcal{B}^{R}_{ϕη}Γ^{R}_{ee})/{(\mathcal{B}^{R}_{ϕη^{\prime}}Γ^{R}_{ee})}$ = 0.23 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.18 (syst), which is smaller than the prediction of the $s\bar{s}g$ hybrid models by several orders of magnitude.

Observation of the $Y(4220)$ and $Y(4360)$ in the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ$

The cross sections of the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ$ at center-of-mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$) between 3.81 and 4.60 GeV are measured with high precision by using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Three structures are observed by analyzing the lineshape of the measured cross sections, and a maximum-likelihood fit including three resonances is performed by assuming the lowest lying structure is the $ψ(4040)$. For the other resonances, we obtain masses of $(4218.7 \pm 4.0 \pm 2.5)$ and $(4380.4 \pm 14.2 \pm 1.8)$ MeV/c$^{2}$ with corresponding widths of $(82.5 \pm 5.9 \pm 0.5)$ and $(147.0 \pm 63.0 \pm 25.8)$ MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The measured resonant parameters are consistent with those of the $Y(4220)$ and $Y(4360)$ from pr evious measurements of different final states. For the first time, we observe the decays of the $Y(4220)$ and $Y(4360)$ into $ηJ/ψ$ final states.

Photoproduction of hidden-bottom pentaquark and related topics

Due to the discovery of the hidden-charm pentaquark $P_c$ states by the LHCb collaboration, the interests on the candidates of hidden-bottom pentaquark $P_b$ states are increasing. They are anticipated to exist as the analogues of the $P_c$ states in the bottom sector and predicted by many models. We give an exploration of searching for a typical $P_b$ in the $γp \to Υp$ reaction, which shows a promising potential to observe it at an electron-ion collider. The possibility of searching for $P_b$ in open-bottom channels are also briefly discussed. Meanwhile, the $t$-channel non-resonant contribution, which in fact covers several interesting topics at low energies, is systematically investigated.

Search for New Hadronic Decays of $h_c$ and Observation of $h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$

Ten hadronic final states of the $h_c$ decays are investigated via the process $ψ(3686)\rightarrow π^0 h_c$, using a data sample of $(448.1 \pm 2.9) \times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel $h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ is observed for the first time with a significance of $6.0 σ$. The corresponding branching fraction is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}) =(3.3 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.6)\times 10^{-3}$ (the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematical). Evidence for the decays $h_c\rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{0} η$ and $h_c\rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}$ is found with a significance of $3.6 σ$ and $3.8 σ$, respectively. The corresponding branching fractions (and upper limits) are obtained to be $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{0} η) =(7.2 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.3)\times 10^{-3}$ $(< 1.8 \times 10^{-2})$ and $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}) =(2.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3}$ $(<4.7\times 10^{-3})$. Upper limits on the branching fractions for the final states $h_c \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$, $K^{+}K^{-}η$, $K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}η$, $2(K^{+}K^{-})π^{0}$, $K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}η$, $K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, and $p\bar{p}π^{0}π^{0}$ are determined at a confidence level of 90\%.

Hindered magnetic dipole transitions between P-wave bottomonia and coupled-channel effects

In the hindered magnetic dipole transitions of heavy quarkonia, the coupled-channel effects originating from the coupling of quarkonia to a pair of heavy and anti-heavy mesons can play a dominant role. Here, we study the hindered magnetic dipole transitions between two $P$-wave bottomonia, $χ_b(n P)$ and $h_b(n^\prime P)$, with $n\neq n^\prime$. In these processes the coupled-channel effects are expected to lead to partial widths much larger than the quark model predictions. We estimate these partial widths which, however, are very sensitive to unknown coupling constants related to the vertices $χ_{b0}(nP)B\bar B$. A measurement of the hindered M1 transitions can shed light on the coupled-channel dynamics in these transitions and hence on the size of the coupling constants. We also suggest to check the coupled-channel effects by comparing results from quenched and fully dynamical lattice QCD calculations.

Invisible QCD as Dark Energy

We account for the late time acceleration of the Universe by extending the QCD color to a $SU(3)$ invisible sector (IQCD). If the Invisible Chiral symmetry is broken in the early universe, a condensate of dark pions (dpions) and dark gluons (dgluons) forms. The condensate naturally forms due to strong dynamics similar to the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio mechanism. As the Universe evolves from early times to present times the interaction energy between the dgluon and dpion condensate dominates with a negative pressure equation of state and causes late time acceleration. We conclude with a stability analysis of the coupled perturbations of the dark pions and dark gluons.

Remarks on the $P_c$ structures and triangle singularities

It was proposed that the narrow $P_c(4450)$ structure observed by the LHCb Collaboration in the reaction $Λ_b\to J/ψp K$ might be due to a triangle singularity around the $χ_{c1}$--proton threshold at 4.45~GeV. We discuss the occurrence of a similar triangle singularity in the $J/ψp$ invariant mass distribution for the decay $Λ_b\to J/ψp π$, which could explain the bump around 4.45~GeV in the data. More precise measurements of this process would provide valuable information towards an understanding of the $P_c$ structures.

How to reveal the exotic nature of the P_c(4450)

The LHCb Collaboration announced two pentaquark-like structures in the $J/ψp$ invariant mass distribution. We show that the current information on the narrow structure at 4.45 GeV is compatible with kinematical effects of the rescattering from $χ_{c1} p$ to $J/ψp$: First, it is located exactly at the $χ_{c1} p$ threshold. Second, the mass of the four-star well-established $Λ(1890)$ is such that a leading Landau singularity from a triangle diagram can coincidentally appear at the $χ_{c1} p$ threshold, and third, there is a narrow structure at the $χ_{c1}\,p$ threshold but not at the $χ_{c0} p$ and $χ_{c2} p$ thresholds. In order to check whether that structure corresponds to a real exotic resonance, one has to measure the process $Λ_b^0\to K^-χ_{c1} p$. If the $P_c(4450)$ structure exists in the $χ_{c1} p$ invariant mass distribution as well, then the structure cannot be just a kinematical effect but is a real resonance, otherwise, one cannot conclude the $P_c(4450)$ to be another exotic hadron. In addition, it is also worthwhile to measure the decay $Υ(1S)\to J/ψp \bar p$: a narrow structure at 4.45 GeV but not at the $χ_{c0} p$ and $χ_{c2} p$ thresholds would exclude the possibility of a pure kinematical effect.

A Fast, robust algorithm for power line interference cancellation in neural recording

Power line interference may severely corrupt neural recordings at 50/60 Hz and harmonic frequencies. In this paper, we present a robust and computationally efficient algorithm for removing power line interference from neural recordings. The algorithm includes four steps. First, an adaptive notch filter is used to estimate the fundamental frequency of the interference. Subsequently, based on the estimated frequency, harmonics are generated by using discrete-time oscillators, and then the amplitude and phase of each harmonic are estimated through using a modified recursive least squares algorithm. Finally, the estimated interference is subtracted from the recorded data. The algorithm does not require any reference signal, and can track the frequency, phase, and amplitude of each harmonic. When benchmarked with other popular approaches, our algorithm performs better in terms of noise immunity, convergence speed, and output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). While minimally affecting the signal bands of interest, the algorithm consistently yields fast convergence and substantial interference rejection in different conditions of interference strengths (input SNR from -30 dB to 30 dB), power line frequencies (45-65 Hz), and phase and amplitude drifts. In addition, the algorithm features a straightforward parameter adjustment since the parameters are independent of the input SNR, input signal power, and the sampling rate. The proposed algorithm features a highly robust operation, fast adaptation to interference variations, significant SNR improvement, low computational complexity and memory requirement, and straightforward parameter adjustment. These features render the algorithm suitable for wearable and implantable sensor applications, where reliable and real-time cancellation of the interference is desired.

Application of Multilayer Feedforward Neural Networks in Predicting Tree Height and Forest Stock Volume of Chinese Fir

Wood increment is critical information in forestry management. Previous studies used mathematics models to describe complex growing pattern of forest stand, in order to determine the dynamic status of growing forest stand in multiple conditions. In our research, we aimed at studying non-linear relationships to establish precise and robust Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) models to predict the precise values of tree height and forest stock volume based on data of Chinese fir. Results show that Multilayer Feedforward Neural Networks with 4 nodes (MLFN-4) can predict the tree height with the lowest RMS error (1.77); Multilayer Feedforward Neural Networks with 7 nodes (MLFN-7) can predict the forest stock volume with the lowest RMS error (4.95). The training and testing process have proved that our models are precise and robust.

Production of charm-strange hadronic molecules at the LHC

We explore the inclusive hadroproduction of the D_{s0}^*(2317), D_{s1}(2460) and D_{sJ}(2860) states at the Large Hadron Collider under the assumption that these hadrons are S-wave meson-meson molecules. In addition, the D_{s2}(2910), a predicted bound state of the D_2(2460)K system, is also discussed. We first derive a factorisation formula for the production rates based on effective field theory. Then we make use of two MC event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of pairs of charmed mesons and kaons. Using effective field theory to handle the final state interaction among the meson pairs, we give an estimate of the inclusive production rates for these particles at the order-of-magnitude accuracy. Our results show that the cross sections for the pp --> D_{s0}^*(2317) and pp --> D_{s1}(2460) at the LHC are at O(1 μb) level, while the ones for the pp --> D_{sJ}(2860) and the pp --> D_{s2}(2910) are smaller by about one order of magnitude. Such estimates suggest that these four exotic states could be copiously produced at the LHC. A study of these states at the LHC will thus provide valuable information on hadron spectroscopy as well as hadron interactions.

Production of the bottom analogues and the spin partner of the X(3872) at hadron colliders

Using the Monte Carlo event generator tools Pythia and Herwig, we simulate the production of bottom/charm meson and antimeson pairs at hadron colliders in proton-proton/antiproton collisions. With these results, we derive an order-of-magnitude estimate for the production rates of the bottom analogues and the spin partner of the $X(3872)$ as hadronic molecules at the LHC and Tevatron experiments. We find that the cross sections for these processes are at the nb level, so that the current and future data sets from the Tevatron and LHC experiments offer a significant discovery potential. We further point out that the $X_b/X_{b2}$ should be reconstructed in the $γΥ(nS) (n=1,2,3)$, $Υ(1S)π^+π^-π^0$, or $χ_{bJ}π^+π^-$ instead of the $Υ(nS)π^+π^-$ final states.

Unsupervised Spike Sorting Based on Discriminative Subspace Learning

Spike sorting is a fundamental preprocessing step for many neuroscience studies which rely on the analysis of spike trains. In this paper, we present two unsupervised spike sorting algorithms based on discriminative subspace learning. The first algorithm simultaneously learns the discriminative feature subspace and performs clustering. It uses histogram of features in the most discriminative projection to detect the number of neurons. The second algorithm performs hierarchical divisive clustering that learns a discriminative 1-dimensional subspace for clustering in each level of the hierarchy until achieving almost unimodal distribution in the subspace. The algorithms are tested on synthetic and in-vivo data, and are compared against two widely used spike sorting methods. The comparative results demonstrate that our spike sorting methods can achieve substantially higher accuracy in lower dimensional feature space, and they are highly robust to noise. Moreover, they provide significantly better cluster separability in the learned subspace than in the subspace obtained by principal component analysis or wavelet transform.

BEEC: An event generator for simulating the $B_c$ meson production at an $e^+e^-$ collider

The $B_c$ meson is a doubly heavy quark-antiquark bound state and carries flavors explicitly, which provides a fruitful laboratory for testing potential models and understanding the weak decay mechanisms for heavy flavors. In view of the prospects in $B_c$ physics at the hadronic colliders as Tevatron and LHC, $B_c$ physics is attracting more and more attention. It has been shown that a high luminosity $e^+e^-$ collider running around the $Z^0$-peak is also helpful for studying the properties of $B_c$ meson and has its own advantages. For the purpose, we write down an event generator for simulating $B_c$ meson production through $e^+e^-$ annihilation according to relevant publications. We name it as BEEC, in which the color-singlet $S$-wave and $P$-wave $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium states together with the color-octet $S$-wave $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium states can be generated. BEEC can also be adopted to generate the similar charmonium and bottomnium states via the semi-exclusive channels $e^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrow |(Q\bar{Q})[n]\rangle +Q +\bar{Q}$ with $Q=b$ and $c$ respectively. To increase the simulation efficiency, we simplify the amplitude as compact as possible by using the improved trace technology. BEEC is a Fortran programme written in a PYTHIA-compatible format and is written in a modularization structure, one may apply it to various situations or experimental environments conveniently by using the GNU C compiler {\bf make}. A method to improve the efficiency of generating unweighted events within PYTHIA environment has been suggested. Moreover, BEEC will generate a standard Les Houches Event data file that contains useful information of the meson and its accompanying partons, which can be conveniently imported into PYTHIA to do further hadronization and decay simulation.

Heavy Quarkonium Production through the Semi-Exclusive $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation Channels around the $Z^0$ Peak

Within the framework of the non-relativistic QCD, we present a detailed discussion on the heavy quarkonium production at the leading order in $α_s$ at a $e^+ e^-$ collider with the collision energy around the $Z^0$ peak. Quarkonia are produced through the semi-exclusive channels $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow |H_{Q\bar{Q}}\rangle +X$ with $X=Q\bar{Q}$ or $gg$, where $Q$ indicates a heavy quark (respectively $b$ or $c$). It is noted that in addition to the color-singlet 1S-level quarkonium states, the 2S and 1P color-singlet states and the color-octet $|(Q\bar{Q})[1^3S_1^{({\bf 8})}]g\rangle$ state also provide sizable contributions. The heavy quarkonium transverse momentum and rapidity distributions for the $e^+ e^-$ collision energy $E_{cm}=m_Z$ are presented. For both charmonium and bottomonium production via the $Z^0$ propagator, there is approximate "spin degeneracy" between the spin-triplet and spin-singlet quarkonium states. Uncertainties for the total cross sections are estimated by taking $m_c=1.50\pm0.15$ GeV and $m_b=4.90\pm0.15$ GeV. Around $E_{cm}=m_{Z}$, due to the $Z^0$-boson resonance effect, total cross sections for the channels via the $Z^0$-propagator become much larger than the channels via the virtual photon propagator. We conclude that, in addition to the $B$ factories as BaBar and Belle and the hadronic colliders as Tevatron and LHC, such a super $Z$-factory will present an excellent platform for studying the heavy quarkonium properties.

$B_c$ Meson Production around the $Z^0$ Peak at a High Luminosity $e^+ e^-$ Collider

Considering the possibility to build an $e^+ e^-$ collider at the energies around the $Z^0$-boson resonance with a planned luminosity so high as ${\cal L}\propto 10^{34}\sim 10^{36}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ (super $Z$-factory), we make a detailed discussion on the $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium production through $e^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrow (c\bar{b})[n]+b+\bar{c}$ within the framework of non-relativistic QCD. To simplify the hard-scattering amplitude as much as possible and to derive analytic expressions for the purpose of future events simulation, we adopt the "improved trace technology" to do our calculation, which deals with the hard scattering amplitude directly at the amplitude level other than the conventional way at the squared-amplitude level. Total cross-section uncertainties caused by the quark masses are predicted by taking $m_c=1.50\pm0.30$ GeV and $m_b=4.90\pm0.40$ GeV. If all higher $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium states decay to the ground state $B_c$ ($|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1S_0]>$) with 100% efficiency, we obtain $σ_{e^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrow B_{c}+b+\bar{c}} =5.190^{+6.222}_{-2.419}$ pb, which shows that about $10^5 \sim 10^7$ $B_c$ events per operation year can be accumulated in the super $Z$-factory. If taking the collider energy runs slightly off the $Z^0$-peak, i.e. $\sqrt{S}=(1.00\pm0.05) m_Z$, the total cross-section shall be lowered by about one-order from its peak value. Such a super $Z$-factory shall provide another useful platform to study the properties of $B_c$ meson, or even the properties of its excited $P$-wave states, in addition to its production at the hadronic colliders Tevatron and LHC.

Excited Heavy Quarkonium Production at the LHC through $W$-Boson Decays

Sizable amount of heavy-quarkonium events can be produced through $W$-boson decays at the LHC. Such channels will provide a suitable platform to study the heavy-quarkonium properties. The "improved trace technology", which disposes the amplitude ${\cal M}$ at the amplitude-level, is helpful for deriving compact analytical results for complex processes. As an important new application, in addition to the production of the lower-level Fock states $|(Q\bar{Q'})[1S]>$ and $|(Q\bar{Q'})[1P]>$, we make a further study on the production of higher-excited $|(Q\bar{Q'})>$-quarkonium Fock states $|(Q\bar{Q'})[2S]>$, $|(Q\bar{Q'})[3S]>$ and $|(Q\bar{Q'})[2P]>$. Here $|(Q\bar{Q'})>$ stands for the $|(c\bar{c})>$-charmonium, $|(c\bar{b})>$-quarkonium and $|(b\bar{b})>$-bottomonium respectively. We show that sizable amount of events for those higher-excited states can also be produced at the LHC. Therefore, we need to take them into consideration for a sound estimation.

Heavy Quarkonium Production at LHC through $W$ Boson Decays

The production of the heavy $(c\bar{c})$-quarkonium, $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium and $(b\bar{b})$-quarkonium states ($(Q\bar{Q'})$-quarkonium for short), via the $W^+$ semi-inclusive decays, has been systematically studied within the framework of the non-relativistic QCD. In addition to the two color-singlet $S$-wave states, we also discuss the production of the four color-singlet $P$-wave states $|(Q\bar{Q'})(^1P_1)_{\bf 1}>$ and $(Q\bar{Q'})(^3P_J)_{\bf 1}>$ (with $J=(1,2,3)$) together with the two color-octet components $|(Q\bar{Q'})(^1S_0)_{\bf 8}>$ and $|(Q\bar{Q'})(^3S_1)_{\bf 8}>$. Improved trace technology is adopted to derive the simplified analytic expressions at the amplitude level, which shall be useful for dealing with the following cascade decay channels. At the LHC with the luminosity ${\cal L}\propto 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ and the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=14$ TeV, sizable heavy-quarkonium events can be produced through the $W^+$ boson decays, i.e. $2.57\times10^6$ $η_c$, $2.65\times10^6$ $J/Ψ$ and $2.40\times10^6$ $P$-wave charmonium events per year can be obtained; and $1.01\times10^5$ $B_c$, $9.11\times10^4$ $B^*_c$ and $3.16\times10^4$ $P$-wave $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium events per year can be obtained. Main theoretical uncertainties have also been discussed. By adding the uncertainties caused by the quark masses in quadrature, we obtain $Γ_{W^+\to (c\bar{c})+c\bar{s}} =524.8^{+396.3}_{-258.4}$ KeV, $Γ_{W^+\to (c\bar{b})+b\bar{s}} =13.5^{+4.73}_{-3.29}$ KeV, $Γ_{W^+\to (c\bar{b})+c\bar{c}}= 1.74^{+1.98}_{-0.73}$ KeV and $Γ_{W^+\to (b\bar{b})+c\bar{b}}= 38.6^{+13.4}_{-9.69}$ eV.

Production of the $P$-Wave Excited $B_c$-States through the $Z^0$ Boson Decays

In Ref.[7],we have dealt with the production of the two color-singlet $S$-wave $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium states $B_c(|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1S_0]>)$ and $B^*_c(|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^3S_1]>)$ through the $Z^0$ boson decays. As an important sequential work, we make a further discussion on the production of the more complicated $P$-wave excited $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium states, i.e. $|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1P_1]>$ and $|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^3P_J]>$ (with $J=(1,2,3)$). More over, we also calculate the channel with the two color-octet quarkonium states $|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 8}[^1S_0]g>$ and $|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 8}[^3S_1]g>$, whose contributions to the decay width maybe at the same order of magnitude as that of the color-singlet $P$-wave states according to the naive nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics scaling rules. The $P$-wave states shall provide sizable contributions to the $B_c$ production, whose decay width is about 20% of the total decay width $Γ_{Z^0\to B_c}$. After summing up all the mentioned $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium states' contributions, we obtain $Γ_{Z^0\to B_c} =235.9^{+352.8}_{-122.0}$ KeV, where the errors are caused by the main uncertainty sources.

Sybil accounts are fake identities created to unfairly increase the power or resources of a single malicious user. Researchers have long known about the existence of Sybil accounts in online communities such as file-sharing systems, but have not been able to perform large scale measurements to detect them or measure their activities. In this paper, we describe our efforts to detect, characterize and understand Sybil account activity in the Renren online social network (OSN). We use ground truth provided by Renren Inc. to build measurement based Sybil account detectors, and deploy them on Renren to detect over 100,000 Sybil accounts. We study these Sybil accounts, as well as an additional 560,000 Sybil accounts caught by Renren, and analyze their link creation behavior. Most interestingly, we find that contrary to prior conjecture, Sybil accounts in OSNs do not form tight-knit communities. Instead, they integrate into the social graph just like normal users. Using link creation timestamps, we verify that the large majority of links between Sybil accounts are created accidentally, unbeknownst to the attacker. Overall, only a very small portion of Sybil accounts are connected to other Sybils with social links. Our study shows that existing Sybil defenses are unlikely to succeed in today's OSNs, and we must design new techniques to effectively detect and defend against Sybil attacks.

$Z_0$ Boson Decays to $B^{(*)}_c$ Meson and Its Uncertainties

The programming new $e^{+}e^-$ collider with high luminosity shall provide another useful platform to study the properties of the doubly heavy $B_c$ meson in addition to the hadronic colliders as LHC and TEVATRON. Under the `New Trace Amplitude Approach', we calculate the production of the spin-singlet $B_c$ and the spin-triplet $B^*_c$ mesons through the $Z^0$ boson decays, where uncertainties for the production are also discussed. Our results show $Γ_{(^1S_0)}= 81.4^{+102.1}_{-40.5}$ KeV and $Γ_{(^3S_1)}=116.4^{+163.9}_{-62.8}$ KeV, where the errors are caused by varying $m_b$ and $m_c$ within their reasonable regions.
