Novel Spatial Profiles of Population Distribution of Two Diffusive SIS Epidemic Models with Mass Action Infection Mechanism and Small Movement Rate for the Infected Individuals

In this paper, we are concerned with two SIS epidemic reaction-diffusion models with mass action infection mechanism of the form SISI, and study the spatial profile of population distribution as the movement rate of the infected individuals is restricted to be small. For the model with a constant total population number, our results show that the susceptible population always converges to a positive constant which is indeed the minimum of the associated risk function, and the infected population either concentrates at the isolated highest-risk points or aggregates only on the highest-risk intervals once the highest-risk locations contain at least one interval. In sharp contrast, for the model with a varying total population number which is caused by the recruitment of the susceptible individuals and death of the infected individuals, our results reveal that the susceptible population converges to a positive function which is non-constant unless the associated risk function is constant, and the infected population may concentrate only at some isolated highest-risk points, or aggregate at least in a neighborhood of the highest-risk locations or occupy the whole habitat, depending on the behavior of the associated risk function and even its smoothness at the highest-risk locations. Numerical simulations are performed to support and complement our theoretical findings.

Global classical solutions for a class of reaction-diffusion system with density-suppressed motility

This paper is concerned with a class of reaction-diffusion system with density-suppressed motility \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_{t}=Δ(γ(v) u)+αu F(w), & x \in Ω, \quad t>0, \\ v_{t}=D Δv+u-v, & x \in Ω, \quad t>0, \\ w_{t}=Δw-u F(w), & x \in Ω, \quad t>0, %\frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}=\frac{\partial v}{\partial ν}=\frac{\partial w}{\partial ν}=0, & x \in \partial Ω, \quad t>0, \\ %(u, v, w)(x, 0)=\left(u_{0}, v_{0}, w_{0}\right)(x), & x \in Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain Ω⊂Rn (n≤2)Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n~(n\leq 2), where α>0α>0 and D>0D>0 are constants. The random motility function γγ satisfies \begin{equation*} γ\in C^3((0,+\infty)),\ γ>0,\ γ'<0\,\ \text{on}\,\ (0,+\infty) \ \ \text{and}\ \ \lim_{v\rightarrow+\infty}γ(v)=0. \end{equation*} %and %\begin{equation*} %\lim_{x\rightarrow+\infty}γ(x)=0. %\end{equation*} The intake rate function FF satisfies \begin{equation*} F\in C^1([0,+\infty)),\,F(0)=0\,\ \text{and}\ \,F>0\,\ \text{on}\,\ (0,+\infty). \end{equation*} We show that the above system admits a unique global classical solution for all non-negative initial data u0∈C0(Ω‾), v0∈W1,∞(Ω), w0∈W1,∞(Ω). u_0\in C^0(\overlineΩ),\,v_0\in W^{1,\infty}(Ω),\,w_0\in W^{1,\infty}(Ω). Moreover, if there exist k>0k>0 and v‾>0\overline{v}>0 such that \begin{equation*} \inf_{v>\overline{v}}v^kγ(v)>0, \end{equation*} then the global solution is bounded uniformly in time.

Boundedness and asymptotics of a reaction-diffusion system with density-dependent motility

We consider the initial-boundary value problem of a system of reaction-diffusion equations with density-dependent motility \begin{equation*}\label{e1}\tag{∗\ast} \begin{cases} u_t=Δ(γ(v)u)+αu F(w) -θu, &x\in Ω, ~~t>0,\\ v_t=DΔv+u-v,& x\in Ω, ~~t>0,\\ w_t=Δw-uF(w),& x\in Ω, ~~t>0, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}=\frac{\partial v}{\partial ν}= \frac{\partial w}{\partial ν}=0,&x\in \partialΩ, ~~t>0,\\ (u,v,w)(x,0)=(u_0,v_0,w_0)(x), & x\inΩ, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in a bounded domain Ω⊂R2Ω\subset\R^2 with smooth boundary, αα and θθ are non-negative constants and νν denotes the outward normal vector of ∂Ω\partial Ω. The random motility function γ(v)γ(v) and functional response function F(w)F(w) satisfy the following assumptions: \begin{itemize} \item γ(v)∈C3([0,∞)), 0<γ1≤γ(v)≤γ2, ∣γ′(v)∣≤ηγ(v)\in C^{3}([0,\infty)),~0<γ_{1}\leqγ(v)\leq γ_2, \ |γ'(v)|\leq η for all v≥0v\geq0; \item F(w)∈C1([0,∞)),F(0)=0,F(w)>0 in (0,∞) and F′(w)>0 on  [0,∞)F(w)\in C^1([0,\infty)), F(0)=0,F(w)>0 \ \mathrm{in}~(0,\infty)~\mathrm{and}~F'(w)>0 \ \mathrm{on}\ \ [0,\infty) \end{itemize} for some positive constants γ1,γ2γ_1, γ_2 and ηη. Based on the method of weighted energy estimates and Moser iteration, we prove that the problem \eqref{e1} has a unique classical global solution uniformly bounded in time. Furthermore we show that if θ>0θ>0, the solution (u,v,w)(u,v,w) will converge to (0,0,w∗)(0,0,w_*) in L∞L^\infty with some w∗>0w_*>0 as time tends to infinity, while if θ=0θ=0, the solution (u,v,w)(u,v,w) will asymptotically converge to (u∗,u∗,0)(u_*,u_*,0) in L∞L^\infty with u∗=1∣Ω∣(∥u0∥L1+α∥w0∥L1)u_*=\frac{1}{|Ω|}(\|u_0\|_{L^1}+α\|w_0\|_{L^1}) if D>0D>0 is suitably large.

Critical mass on the Keller-Segel system with signal-dependent motility

This paper is concerned with the global boundedness and blowup of solutions to the Keller-Segel system with density-dependent motility in a two-dimensional bounded smooth domain with Neumman boundary conditions. We show that if the motility function decays exponentially, then a critical mass phenomenon similar to the minimal Keller-Segel model will arise. That is there is a number m∗>0m_*>0, such that the solution will globally exist with uniform-in-time bound if the initial cell mass (i.e. L1L^1-norm of the initial value of cell density) is less than m∗m_*, while the solution may blow up if the initial cell mass is greater than m∗m_*.

Global boundedness of the fully parabolic Keller-Segel system with signal-dependent motilities

This paper establishes the global uniform-in-time boundedness of solutions to the following Keller-Setel system with signal-dependent diffusion and chemotaxis \begin{equation}\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} u_t=\nabla\cdot(γ(v)\nabla u - uϕ(v)\nabla v),\quad & x\in Ω, t>0,\\ v_t = dΔv- v+u,\quad & x\in Ω, t>0 \end{array}\right.\end{equation} in a bounded domain Ω⊂RN(N≤4)Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N(N\leq4) with smooth boundary, where the density-dependent motility functions γ(v)γ(v) and ϕ(v)ϕ(v) denote the diffusive and chemotactic coefficients, respectively. The model was originally proposed by Keller and Segel in \cite{Keller-1} to describe the aggregation phase of Dictyostelium discoideum cells, where the two motility functions satisfy a proportional relation χ(v)=(α−1)γ′(v)χ(v)=(α-1)γ'(v) with α>0α>0 denoting the ratio of effective body length (i.e. distance between receptors) to the step size. The major technical difficulty in the analysis is the possible degeneracy of diffusion. In this work, we show that if γ(v)>0γ(v)>0 and ϕ(v)>0ϕ(v)>0 are smooth on [0,∞)[0,\infty) and satisfy inf⁡v≥0dγ(v)vϕ(v)(vϕ(v)+d−γ(v))+>N2,\inf_{v\geq0} \frac{dγ(v)}{vϕ(v)(vϕ(v)+d-γ(v))_+}>\frac{N}{2}, then the above Keller-Segel system subject to Neumann boundary conditions admits classical solutions uniformly bounded in time. The main idea of proving our results is the estimates of a weighted functional ∫Ωupv−qdx\int_Ωu^{p}v^{-q}dx for p>N2p>\frac{N}{2} by choosing a suitable exponent pp depending on the unknown vv, by which we are able to derive a uniform L∞L^\infty-norm of vv and hence rule out the diffusion degeneracy.

Large Time Behavior and Diffusion Limit for a System of Balance Laws From Chemotaxis in Multi-dimensions

We consider the Cauchy problem for a system of balance laws derived from a chemotaxis model with singular sensitivity in multiple space dimensions. Utilizing energy methods, we first prove the global well-posedness of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem when only the energy of the first order spatial derivatives of the initial data is sufficiently small, and the solutions are shown to converge to the prescribed constant equilibrium states as time goes to infinity. Then we prove that the solutions of the fully dissipative model converge to those of the corresponding partially dissipative model when the chemical diffusion coefficient tends to zero.

The Keller-Segel system with logistic growth and signal-dependent motility

The paper is concerned with the following chemotaxis system with nonlinear motility functions \begin{equation}\label{0-1}\tag{∗\ast} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla \cdot (γ(v)\nabla u- uχ(v)\nabla v)+μu(1-u), &x\in Ω, ~~t>0, 0=Δv+ u-v,& x\in Ω, ~~t>0,\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x), & x\in Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation} with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain Ω⊂R2Ω\subset \R^2 with smooth boundary, where the motility functions γ(v)γ(v) and χ(v)χ(v) satisfy the following conditions \begin{itemize} \item {\color{black}(γ,χ)∈[C2[0,∞)]2(γ,χ)\in [C^2[0,\infty)]^2} with γ(v)>0γ(v)>0 and {\color{black} ∣χ(v)∣2γ(v)\frac{|χ(v)|^2}{γ(v)} is bounded for all v≥0v\geq 0.} %for all v≥0v\geq 0 and lim⁡v→∞∣χ(v)∣2γ(v)\lim\limits_{v\to\infty}\frac{|χ(v)|^2}{γ(v)} exists. \end{itemize} By employing the method of energy estimates , we establish the existence of globally bounded solutions of \eqref{0-1} with μ>0μ>0 for any u0∈W1,∞(Ω)u_0 \in W^{1, \infty}(Ω). Then based on a Lyapunov function, we show that all solutions (u,v)(u,v) of \eqref{0-1} will exponentially converge to the unique constant steady state (1,1)(1,1) provided μ>K016μ>\frac{K_0}{16} with K0=max⁡0≤v≤∞∣χ(v)∣2γ(v)K_0=\max\limits_{0\leq v \leq \infty}\frac{|χ(v)|^2}{γ(v)}.

Travelling wave solutions of the density-suppressed motility model

In this paper, we study the traveling wave solutions to the density-suppressed motility model describing the ``self-trapping'' mechanism that induces spatio-temporal pattern formations observed in the experiment. We establish the existence of traveling wavefronts with a minimal wave speed and discuss the selection of wave profiles supplemented with numerical simulations illustrating the wave patterns which are well consistent with experimental observations.

Mathematical Analysis of a Kinetic Model for Cell Movement in Network Tissues

Mesenchymal motion describes the movement of cells in biological tissues formed by fiber networks. An important example is the migration of tumor cells through collagen networks during the process of metastasis formation. We investigate the mesenchymal motion model proposed by T. Hillen (J. Math. Biol. 53:585-616, 2006) in higher dimensions. We formulate the problem as an evolution equation in a Banach space of measure-valued functions and use methods from semigroup theory to show the global existence of classical solutions. We investigate steady states of the model and show that patterns of network type exist as steady states. For the case of constant fiber distribution, we find an explicit solution and we prove the convergence to the parabolic limit.
