Active Learning for Deep Visual Tracking

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied to the single target tracking task in recent years. Generally, training a deep CNN model requires numerous labeled training samples, and the number and quality of these samples directly affect the representational capability of the trained model. However, this approach is restrictive in practice, because manually labeling such a large number of training samples is time-consuming and prohibitively expensive. In this paper, we propose an active learning method for deep visual tracking, which selects and annotates the unlabeled samples to train the deep CNNs model. Under the guidance of active learning, the tracker based on the trained deep CNNs model can achieve competitive tracking performance while reducing the labeling cost. More specifically, to ensure the diversity of selected samples, we propose an active learning method based on multi-frame collaboration to select those training samples that should be and need to be annotated. Meanwhile, considering the representativeness of these selected samples, we adopt a nearest neighbor discrimination method based on the average nearest neighbor distance to screen isolated samples and low-quality samples. Therefore, the training samples subset selected based on our method requires only a given budget to maintain the diversity and representativeness of the entire sample set. Furthermore, we adopt a Tversky loss to improve the bounding box estimation of our tracker, which can ensure that the tracker achieves more accurate target states. Extensive experimental results confirm that our active learning-based tracker (ALT) achieves competitive tracking accuracy and speed compared with state-of-the-art trackers on the seven most challenging evaluation benchmarks.

Vanishing dissipation limit to the planar rarefaction wave for the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations

We study the vanishing dissipation limit of the three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations to the corresponding 3D full Euler equations. Our results are twofold. First, we prove that the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations admit a family of smooth solutions that converge to the planar rarefaction wave solution of the 3D compressible Euler equations with arbitrary strength. Second, we obtain a uniform convergence rate in terms of the viscosity and heat-conductivity coefficients. For this multi-dimensional problem, we first need to introduce the hyperbolic wave to recover the physical dissipations of the inviscid rarefaction wave profile as in our previous work [29] on the two-dimensional (2D) case. However, due to the 3D setting that makes the analysis significantly more challenging than the 2D problem, the hyperbolic scaled variables for the space and time could not be used to normalize the dissipation coefficients as in the 2D case. Instead, the analysis of the 3D case is carried out in the original non-scaled variables, and consequently the dissipation terms are more singular compared with the 2D scaled case. Novel ideas and techniques are developed to establish the uniform estimates. In particular, more accurate {\it a priori} assumptions with respect to the dissipation coefficients are crucially needed for the stability analysis, and some new observations on the cancellations of the physical structures for the flux terms are essentially used to justify the 3D limit. Moreover, we find that the decay rate with respect to the dissipation coefficients is determined by the nonlinear flux terms in the original variables for the 3D limit in this paper, but fully determined by the error terms in the scaled variables for the 2D case in [29].

Weak solutions to the stationary Cahn-Hillard/Navier-Stokes equations for compressible fluids

We are concerned with the Cahn-Hilliard/Navier-Stokes equations for the stationary compressible flows in a three-dimensional bounded domain. The governing equations consist of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations describing the compressible fluid flows and the stationary Cahn-Hilliard type diffuse equation for the mass concentration difference. We prove the existence of weak solutions when the adiabatic exponent $γ$ satisfies $γ>\frac{4}{3}$. The proof is based on the weighted total energy estimates and the new techniques developed to overcome the difficulties from the capillary stress.

A Kato-type criterion for vanishing viscosity near the Onsager's critical regularity

We consider a vanishing viscosity sequence of weak solutions of the three-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations on a bounded domain. In a seminal paper [25] Kato showed that for sufficiently regular solutions, the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to having vanishing viscous dissipation in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity. We prove that Kato's criterion holds for Hölder continuous solutions with the regularity index arbitrarily close to the Onsager's critical exponent through a new boundary layer foliation and a global mollification.

Global regularity of the three-dimensional fractional micropolar equations

The global well-posedness of the smooth solution to the three-dimensional (3D) incompressible micropolar equations is a difficult open problem. This paper focuses on the 3D incompressible micropolar equations with fractional dissipations $( Δ)^αu$ and $(-Δ)^βw$.Our objective is to establish the global regularity of the fractional micropolar equations with the minimal amount of dissipations. We prove that, if $α\geq \frac{5}{4}$, $β\geq 0$ and $α+β\geq\frac{7}{4}$, the fractional 3D micropolar equations always possess a unique global classical solution for any sufficiently smooth data. In addition, we also obtain the global regularity of the 3D micropolar equations with the dissipations given by Fourier multipliers that are logarithmically weaker than the fractional Laplacian.

Large Time Behavior and Diffusion Limit for a System of Balance Laws From Chemotaxis in Multi-dimensions

We consider the Cauchy problem for a system of balance laws derived from a chemotaxis model with singular sensitivity in multiple space dimensions. Utilizing energy methods, we first prove the global well-posedness of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem when only the energy of the first order spatial derivatives of the initial data is sufficiently small, and the solutions are shown to converge to the prescribed constant equilibrium states as time goes to infinity. Then we prove that the solutions of the fully dissipative model converge to those of the corresponding partially dissipative model when the chemical diffusion coefficient tends to zero.

Magnetic effects on the solvability of 2D MHD boundary layer equations without resistivity in Sobolev spaces

In this paper, we are concerned with the magnetic effect on the Sobolev solvability of boundary layer equations for the 2D incompressible MHD system without resistivity. The MHD boundary layer is described by the Prandtl type equations derived from the incompressible viscous MHD system without resistivity under the no-slip boundary condition on the velocity. Assuming that the initial tangential magnetic field does not degenerate, a local-in-time well-posedness in Sobolev spaces is proved without the monotonicity condition on the velocity field. Moreover, we show that if the tangential magnetic field shear layer is degenerate at one point, then the linearized MHD boundary layer system around the shear layer profile is ill-posed in the Sobolev settings provided that the initial velocity shear flow is non-degenerately critical at the same point.

Nonlinear stability and existence of vortex sheets for inviscid liquid-gas two-phase flow

We are concerned with the vortex sheet solutions for the inviscid two-phase flow in two dimensions. In particular, the nonlinear stability and existence of compressible vortex sheet solutions under small perturbations are established by using a modification of the Nash-Moser iteration technique, where a priori estimates for the linearized equations have a loss of derivatives. Due to the jump of the normal derivatives of densities of liquid and gas, we obtain the normal estimates in the anisotropic Sobolev space, instead of the usual Sobolev space. New ideas and techniques are developed to close the energy estimates and derive the tame estimates for the two-phase flows.

Stationary Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations for the diffuse interface model of compressible flows

A system of partial differential equations for a diffusion interface model is considered for the stationary motion of two macroscopically immiscible, viscous Newtonian fluids in a three-dimensional bounded domain. The governing equations consist of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations for compressible fluids and a stationary Cahn-Hilliard type equation for the mass concentration difference. Approximate solutions are constructed through a two-level approximation procedure, and the limit of the sequence of approximate solutions is obtained by a weak convergence method. New ideas and estimates are developed to establish the existence of weak solutions with a wide range of adiabatic exponent.

Isometric Immersion of Complete Surfaces with Slowly Decaying Negative Gauss Curvature

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. When the Gauss curvature is negative, the isometric immersion problem is considered in this paper through the Gauss-Codazzi system for the second fundamental forms. It is shown that if the Gauss curvature satisfies an integrability condition, the surface has a global smooth isometric immersion in the three-dimensional Euclidean space even if the Gauss curvature decays very slowly at infinity. The new idea of the proof is based on the novel observations on the decay properties of the Riemann invariants of the Gauss-Codazzi system. The weighted Riemann invariants are introduced and a comparison principle is applied with properly chosen control functions.

Isometric Immersion of Surface with Negative Gauss Curvature and the Lax-Friedrichs Scheme

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space is considered through the Gauss-Codazzi equations for the first and second fundamental forms. The large $L^\infty$ solution is obtained which leads to a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion. The approximate solutions are constructed by the the Lax-Friedrichs finite-difference scheme with the fractional step. The uniform estimate is established by studying the equations satisfied by the Riemann invariants and using the sign of the nonlinear part. The $H^{-1}$ compactness is also derived. A compensated compactness framework is applied to obtain the existence of large $L^\infty$ solution to the Gauss-Codazzi equations for the surfaces more general than those in literature.

Isometric Immersions of Surfaces with Two Classes of Metrics and Negative Gauss Curvature

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces with negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space is studied in this paper. The global weak solutions to the Gauss-Codazzi equations with large data in $L^\infty$ are obtained through the vanishing viscosity method and the compensated compactness framework. The $L^\infty$ uniform estimate and $H^{-1}$ compactness are established through a transformation of state variables and construction of proper invariant regions for two types of given metrics including the catenoid type and the helicoid type. The global weak solutions in $L^\infty$ to the Gauss-Codazzi equations yield the $L^\infty$ isometric immersions of surfaces with the given metrics.

Linear Stability of Compressible Vortex Sheets in Two-Dimensional Elastodynamics

The linear stability of rectilinear compressible vortex sheets is studied for two-dimensional isentropic elastic flows. This problem has a free boundary and the boundary is characteristic. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the linear stability of the rectilinear vortex sheets. More precisely, it is shown that, besides the stable supersonic zone, the elasticity exerts an additional stable subsonic zone. A new feature for elastic flow is found that there is a class of states in the interior of subsonic zone where the stability of such states is weaker than the stability of other states in the sense that there is an extra loss of tangential derivatives with respect to the source terms. This is a new feature which Euler flows do not possess. One of the difficulties for the elastic flow is that the non-differentiable points of the eigenvalues may coincide with the roots of the Lopatinskii determinant. As a result, the Kreiss symmetrization cannot be applied directly. Instead, we perform an upper triangularization of the system to separate only the outgoing modes at all points in the frequency space, so that an exact estimate of the outgoing modes can be obtained. Moreover, all the outgoing modes are shown to be zero due to the $L^2$-regularity of solutions. The estimates for the incoming modes can be derived directly from the Lopatinskii determinant. This new approach avoids the lengthy computation and estimates for the outgoing modes when Kreiss symmetrization is applied. This method can also be applied to the Euler flows and MHD flows.

A free boundary problem for the incompressible neo-Hookean elastodynamics is studied in two and three spatial dimensions. The a priori estimates in Sobolev norms of solutions with the physical vacuum condition are established through a geometrical point of view. Some estimates on the second fundamental form and velocity of the free surface are also obtained.

The accretion rate independence of horizontal branch oscillation in XTE J1701-462

We study the temporal and energy spectral properties of the unique neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-462. After assuming the HB/NB vertex as a reference position of accretion rate, the horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) of the HB/NB vertex is roughly 50 Hz. It indicates that the HBO is independent with the accretion rate or the source intensity. The spectral analysis shows $R_{\rm{in}}\propto\dot{M}_{\rm{Disk}}^{2.9\pm0.09}$ in the HB/NB vertex and $R_{\rm{in}}\propto\dot{M}_{\rm{Disk}}^{1.7\pm0.06}$ in the NB/FB vertex, which implies that different accretion rate may be produced in the HB/NB vertex and the NB/FB vertex. The Comptonization component could be fitted by constrained broken power law (CBPL) or nthComp. Different with GX 17+2, the frequencies of HBO positively correlate with the inner disk radius, which contradict with the prediction of Lense-Thirring precession model. XTE J1701-462, both in the Cyg-like phase and in the Sco-like phase, follows a positive correlation between the break frequency of broad band noise and the characteristic frequency of HBO, which is called the W-K relation. An anticorrelation between the frequency of HBO and photon energy is observed. Moreover, the rms of HBO increases with photon energy till ~10 keV. We discuss the possible origin of HBO from corona in XTE J1701-462.

Almost sure existence of Navier-Stokes Equations with randomized data in the whole space

This paper considers the supercritical Navier-Stokes equations posed in the whole space $\R^d$, with suitably randomized initial data, in the weak solution setting. The global weak solutions are constructed for a large set of initial data in $H^{-s}(\R^d)$ for some $s>0$ via a probabilistic argument, and this in turn implies the almost sure existence.

The existence and long time dynamics of globally defined weak solutions for the coupled system are established, using weak convergence methods, compactness and interpolation arguments. The symmetry and traceless properties of the Q-tensor play key roles in this process.

Global Weak Solutions to the Equations of Compressible Flow of Nematic Liquid Crystals in Two Dimensions

We consider weak solutions to a two-dimensional simplified Ericksen-Leslie system of compressible flow of nematic liquid crystals. An initial-boundary value problem is first studied in a bounded domain. By developing new techniques and estimates to overcome the difficulties induced by the supercritical nonlinearity in the equations of angular momentum on the direction field, and adapting the standard three-level approximation scheme and the weak convergence arguments for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, we establish the global existence of weak solutions under a restriction imposed on the initial energy including the case of small initial energy. Then the Cauchy problem with large initial data is investigated, and we prove the global existence of large weak solutions by using the domain expansion technique and the rigidity theorem, provided that the second component of initial data of the direction field satisfies some geometric angle condition.

The existence of global weak solutions is established through an approximation scheme, energy estimates, and weak convergence.

On Multi-dimensional Compressible Flows of Nematic Liquid Crystals with Large Initial Energy in a Bounded Domain

We study the global existence of weak solutions to a multi-dimensional simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for compressible flows of nematic liquid crystals with large initial energy in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, where N=2 or 3. By exploiting a maximum principle, Nirenberg's interpolation inequality and a smallness condition imposed on the $N$-th component of initial direction field $\mf{d}_0$ to overcome the difficulties induced by the supercritical nonlinearity $|\nabla{\mathbf d}|^2{\mathbf d}$ in the equations of angular momentum, and then adapting a modified three-dimensional approximation scheme and the weak convergence arguments for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, we establish the global existence of weak solutions to the initial-boundary problem with large initial energy and without any smallness condition on the initial density and velocity.

The initial-boundary value problem for the density-dependent incompressible flow of liquid crystals is studied in a three-dimensional bounded smooth domain. For the initial density away from vacuum, the existence and uniqueness is established for both the local strong solution with large initial data and the global strong solution with small data. It is also proved that when the strong solution exists, a weak solution with the same data must be equal to the unique strong solution.

A Fluid Dynamic Formulation of the Isometric Embedding Problem in Differential Geometry

The isometric embedding problem is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. A longstanding problem is considered in this paper to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold which can be realized as isometric immersions into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. A remarkable connection between gas dynamics and differential geometry is discussed. It is shown how the fluid dynamics can be used to formulate a geometry problem. The equations of gas dynamics are first reviewed. Then the formulation using the fluid dynamic variables in conservation laws of gas dynamics is presented for the isometric embedding problem in differential geometry.

Incompressible magnetohydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations

The hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations is considered for weak solutions. Using relative entropy estimate about an absolute Maxwellian, an incompressible Electron-Magnetohydrodynamics-Fourier limit for solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Blotzmann equations over any periodic spatial domain in $\R^3$ is studied. It is shown that any properly scaled sequence of renormalized solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations has fluctuations that (in the weak $L^1$ topology) converge to an infinitesimal Maxwellian with fluid variables that satisfy the incompressibility and Boussinesq relations. It is also shown that the limits of the velocity, the electric field, and the magnetic field are governed by a weak solution of an incompressible electron-magnetohydrodynamics system for all time.

Local strong solution to the compressible magnetohydrodynamic flow with large data

The three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) isentropic flow with zero magnetic diffusivity is studied. The vanishing magnetic diffusivity causes significant difficulties due to the loss of dissipation of the magnetic field. The existence and uniqueness of local in time strong solution with large initial data is established. The strong solution has weaker regularity than the classical solution. A generalized Lax-Milgram theorem and a Schauder-Tychonoff-type fixed point argument are applied with novel techniques and estimates for the strong solution.

Then the weak stability of the renormalized solutions to the Cauchy problem of VMB is established using the compactness of velocity averages and a renormalized formulation. Furthermore, the large time behavior of the renormalized solutions to VMB is studied and it is proved that the density of particles tends to a local Maxwellian as the time goes to infinity.

Global Existence for the Multi-Dimensional Compressible Viscoelastic flows

The global solutions in critical spaces to the multi-dimensional compressible viscoelastic flows are considered. The global existence of the Cauchy problem with initial data close to an equilibrium state is established in Besov spaces. Using uniform estimates for a hyperbolic-parabolic linear system with convection terms, we prove the global existence in the Besov space which is invariant with respect to the {scaling} of the associated equations. Several important estimates are achieved, including a smoothing effect on the velocity, and the $L^1-$decay of the density and deformation gradient.

Isometric Immersions and Compensated Compactness

A fundamental problem in differential geometry is to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold ${\mathcal M}^2$ which can be realized as isometric immersions into $\R^3$. This problem can be formulated as initial and/or boundary value problems for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type whose mathematical theory is largely incomplete. In this paper, we develop a general approach, which combines a fluid dynamic formulation of balance laws for the Gauss-Codazzi system with a compensated compactness framework, to deal with the initial and/or boundary value problems for isometric immersions in $\R^3$. The compensated compactness framework formed here is a natural formulation to ensure the weak continuity of the Gauss-Codazzi system for approximate solutions, which yields the isometric realization of two-dimensional surfaces in $\R^3$. As a first application of this approach, we study the isometric immersion problem for two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with strictly negative Gauss curvature. We prove that there exists a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion of the two-dimensional manifold in $\R^3$ satisfying our prescribed initial conditions. T
