Autonomous Market Intelligence: Agentic AI Nowcasting Predicts Stock Returns

Can fully agentic AI nowcast stock returns? We deploy a state-of-the-art Large Language Model to evaluate the attractiveness of each Russell 1000 stock daily, starting from April 2025 when AI web interfaces enabled real-time search. Our data contribution is unique along three dimensions. First, the nowcasting framework is completely out-of-sample and free of look-ahead bias by construction: predictions are collected at the current edge of time, ensuring the AI has no knowledge of future outcomes. Second, this temporal design is irreproducible -- once the information environment passes, it can never be recreated. Third, our framework is 100% agentic: we do not feed the model news, disclosures, or curated text; it autonomously searches the web, filters sources, and synthesises information into quantitative predictions. We find that AI possesses genuine stock selection ability, but only for identifying top winners. Longing the 20 highest-ranked stocks generates a daily Fama-French five-factor plus momentum alpha of 18.4 basis points and an annualised Sharpe ratio of 2.43. Critically, these returns derive from an implementable strategy trading highly liquid Russell 1000 constituents, with transaction costs representing less than 10\% of gross alpha. However, this predictability is highly concentrated: expanding beyond the top tier rapidly dilutes alpha, and bottom-ranked stocks exhibit returns statistically indistinguishable from the market. We hypothesise that this asymmetry reflects online information structure: genuinely positive news generates coherent signals, while negative news is contaminated by strategic corporate obfuscation and social media noise.

Electrical manipulation of plasmon-phonon polaritons in heterostructures of graphene on biaxial crystals

Phonon polaritons in natural anisotropic crystals hold great promise for infrared nano-optics. However, the direct electrical control of these polaritons is difficult, preventing the development of active polaritonic devices. Here we propose the heterostructures of graphene on a biaxial crystal (α-phase molybdenum trioxide) slab and theoretically study the hybridized plasmon-phonon polaritons with dependence on the Fermi level of graphene from three aspects: dispersion relationships, iso-frequency contours, and the quantum spin Hall effects. We demonstrate the distinct wavelength tunability of the plasmon-phonon polaritons modes and the optical topologic transitions from open (hyperbolic) to closed (bow-tie-like) iso-frequency contours as the increase of the Fermi level of graphene. Furthermore, we observe the tunable quantum spin Hall effects of the plasmon-phonon polaritons, manifesting propagation direction switching by the Fermi level tuning of the graphene. Our findings open opportunities for novel electrically tunable polaritonic devices and programmable quantum optical networks.

Half a Dozen Real-World Applications of Evolutionary Multitasking, and More

Until recently, the potential to transfer evolved skills across distinct optimization problem instances (or tasks) was seldom explored in evolutionary computation. The concept of evolutionary multitasking (EMT) fills this gap. It unlocks a population's implicit parallelism to jointly solve a set of tasks, hence creating avenues for skills transfer between them. Despite it being early days, the idea of EMT has begun to show promise in a range of real-world applications. In the backdrop of recent advances, the contribution of this paper is twofold. First, a review of several application-oriented explorations of EMT in the literature is presented; the works are assimilated into half a dozen broad categories according to their respective application domains. Each of these six categories elaborates fundamental motivations to multitask, and contains a representative experimental study (referred from the literature). Second, a set of recipes is provided showing how problem formulations of general interest, those that cut across different disciplines, could be transformed in the new light of EMT. Our discussions emphasize the many practical use-cases of EMT, and is intended to spark future research towards crafting novel algorithms for real-world deployment.
