Microscopic evidence of a field-induced critical spin-liquid state in a frustrated metal

A field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) state is an extraordinary phenomenon, hitherto unobserved in metallic frustrated compounds. Recent bulk measurements have revealed intriguing field-induced magnetic states in metallic frustrated CePdAl. However, the nature of these field-induced states, potentially including a QSL state, remains unclear due to the lack of detailed microscopic investigation. To elucidate these field-induced states, we employed the transverse-field muon spin relaxation/rotation (TF-$μ$SR) technique, applying various magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis in single-crystalline CePdAl over a broad temperature range (100~K-100~mK). Our $μ$SR data indicate that field-induced low-temperature states for fields B$\leq B_{c2}(=3.4~T)$ exhibit long-range magnetic order, whereas for B>$B_{c2}$ they yield contrasting behavior. Notably, at 3.75 T, the transverse relaxation rate ($λ_T$) diverges following a power-law dependence below 800~mK along with an indication of finite frustration, whereas the Knight shift is temperature independent. These observations corroborate the signature of a critical spin-liquid (CSL) with antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Furthermore, at 4.3 T, a non-Fermi liquid state is observed where frustration is absent. This comprehensive microscopic study strongly suggests the existence of a CSL state in a metallic frustrated system.

Time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order in a kagome superconductor

The kagome lattice, the most prominent structural motif in quantum physics, benefits from inherent nontrivial geometry to host diverse quantum phases, ranging from spin-liquid phases, topological matter to intertwined orders, and most rarely unconventional superconductivity. Recently, charge sensitive probes have suggested that the kagome superconductors AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit unconventional chiral charge order, which is analogous to the long-sought-after quantum order in the Haldane model or Varma model. However, direct evidence for the time-reversal symmetry-breaking of the charge order remains elusive. Here we utilize muon spin relaxation to probe the kagome charge order and superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place just below the charge ordering temperature and persists into the superconducting state. Remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. We further show the multigap nature of superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5 and that the T_c/lambda_{ab}^{-2} ratio is comparable to those of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Our results point to time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order intertwining with unconventional superconductivity in the correlated kagome lattice.

Long-range magnetic order in the ${\tilde S}=1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeS$_2$

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.

Pressure induced topological quantum phase transition in Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2

We report the pressure (p_max = 1.5 GPa) evolution of the crystal structure of the Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2 by means of neutron diffraction experiments. We find that the fundamental non-centrosymmetric structure T_d is fully suppressed and transforms into a centrosymmertic 1T' structure at a critical pressure of p_cr = 1.2 GPa. This is strong evidence for a pressure induced quantum phase transition (QPT) between topological to a trivial electronic state. Although the topological QPT has strong effect on magnetoresistance, it is interesting that the superconducting critical temperature T_c, the superfluid density, and the SC gap all change smoothly and continuously across p_cr and no sudden effects are seen concomitantly with the suppression of the T_d structure. This implies that the T_c, and thus the SC pairing strength, is unaffected by the topological QPT. However, the QPT requires the change in the SC gap symmetry from non-trivial s+- to a trivial s++ state, which we discuss in this work. Our systematic characterizations of the structure and superconducting properties associated with the topological QPT provide deep insight into the pressure induced phase diagram in this topological quantum material.

Strong- to weak-coupling superconductivity in high-$T_c$ bismuthates: revisiting the phase diagram via $μ$SR

Several decades after the discovery of superconductivity in bismuthates, the strength of their electron-phonon coupling and its evolution with doping remain puzzling. To clarify these issues, polycrystalline hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_3$ ($0.1 \le x \le 0.6$) samples were systematically synthesized and their bulk- and microscopic superconducting properties were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR), respectively. The phase diagram of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_3$ was reliably extended up to $x = 0.6$, which is still found to be a bulk superconductor. The lattice parameter $a$ increases linearly with K-content, implying a homogeneous chemical doping. The low-temperature superfluid density, measured via transverse-field (TF)-$μ$SR, indicates an isotropic fully-gapped superconducting state with zero-temperature gaps $Δ_0/k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ = 2.15, 2.10, and 1.75, and magnetic penetration depths $λ_0$ = 219, 184, and 279 nm for $x$ = 0.3, 0.4, and 0.6, respectively. A change in the superconducting gap, from a nearly ideal BCS value (1.76 $k_\mathrm{B}$$T_c$ in the weak coupling case) in the overdoped $x$ = 0.6 region, to much higher values in the optimally-doped case, implies a gradual decrease in electron-phonon coupling with doping.

Using uniaxial stress to probe the relationship between competing superconducting states in a cuprate with spin-stripe order

We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models.

Tunable Berry Curvature Through Magnetic Phase Competition in a Topological Kagome Magnet

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and material science. Along these lines, several kagome magnets have appeared as the most promising platforms. However, the magnetic nature of these materials in the presence of topological state remains an unsolved issue. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the kagome magnet Co_3Sn_2S_2. Using muon spin-rotation, we present evidence for competing magnetic orders in the kagome lattice of this compound. Our results show that while the sample exhibits an out-of-plane ferromagnetic ground state, an in-plane antiferromagnetic state appears at temperatures above 90 K, eventually attaining a volume fraction of 80% around 170 K, before reaching a non-magnetic state. Strikingly, the reduction of the anomalous Hall conductivity above 90 K linearly follows the disappearance of the volume fraction of the ferromagnetic state. We further show that the competition of these magnetic phases is tunable through applying either an external magnetic field or hydrostatic pressure. Our results taken together suggest the thermal and quantum tuning of Berry curvature field via external tuning of magnetic order. Our study shows that Co_3Sn_2S_2 is a rare example where the magnetic competition drives the thermodynamic evolution of the Berry curvature field, thus tuning its topological state.

Cooperative coupling of static magnetism and bulk superconductivity in the stripe phase of La_2-xBa_xCuO_4: Pressure- and doping-dependent studies

Static spin-stripe order and superconductivity were systematically studied in La_2-xBa_xCuO_4 (0.11 - 0.17) at ambient pressure by means of magnetization and muSR experiments. We find that all the investigated La_2-xBa_xCuO_4 samples exhibit static spin-stripe order and that the quasi two-dimensional superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c1 and the static spin-stripe order temperature T_so have very similar values throughout the phase diagram. Moreover, the magnetic and the SC properties of the x = 0.155 (LBCO-0.155) and x = 0.17 (LBCO-0.17) samples were studied under hydrostatic pressure. As a remarkable result, in these bulk cuprate superconductors the three-dimensional SC transition temperature T_c and T_so nearly coincide at all pressure investigated (0 - 2.3 GPa). We also observed a pressure induced transition from long-range spin stripe order to a disordered magnetic state at 1.6 GPa in LBCO-0.155, coexisting with a SC state with substantial superfluid density. In LBCO-0.17 a disordered magnetic state is present at all p. The present results indicate that static magnetic order and SC pairing correlations develop in a cooperative fashion in La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, and provide a new route of understanding the complex interplay between static magnetism and superconductivity in the stripe phase of cuprates.

Coexistence of low moment magnetism and superconductivity in tetragonal FeS and suppression of $T_\mathrm{c}$ under pressure

We report local probe ($μ$SR) measurements on the recently discovered tetragonal FeS superconductor which has been predicted to be electronically very similar to superconducting FeSe. Most remarkably, we find that low moment ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}μ_\mathrm{B})$ disordered magnetism with a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 20$ K microscopically coexists with bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{c}=4.3(1)$ K. From transverse field $μ$SR we obtain an in-plane penetration depth $λ_\mathrm{ab}(0)=223(2)$ nm for FeS. The temperature dependence of the corresponding superfluid density $λ_\mathrm{ab}^{-2}(T)$ indicates a fully gapped superconducting state and is consistent with a two gap s-wave model. Additionally, we find that the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}$ of FeS continuously decreases for hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa.

Field-induced transition of the magnetic ground state from A-type antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order in CsCo2Se2

We report on the magnetic properties of CsCo$_2$Se$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure, which we have characterized through a series of magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. We find that CsCo$_2$Se2$_2$ undergoes a phase transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered state with a Néel temperature of $T_{\rm N} \approx$ 66 K. The nearest neighbour interactions are ferromagnetic as observed by the positive Curie-Weiss temperature of $Θ\approx$ 51.0 K. We find that the magnetic structure of CsCo$_2$Se$_2$ consists of ferromagnetic sheets, which are stacked antiferromagnetically along the tetragonal \textit{c}-axis, generally referred to as A-type antiferromagnetic order. The observed magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment at $T$ = 1.5 K is found to be only 0.20(1)$μ_{\rm Bohr}$/Co. Already in comparably small magnetic fields of $μ_0 H_{MM}$(5K) $\approx$ 0.3 T, we observe a metamagnetic transition that can be attributed to spin-rearrangements of CsCo$_2$Se$_2$, with the moments fully ferromagnetically saturated in a magnetic field of $μ_0 H_{\rm FM}$(5K) $\approx$ 6.4 T. We discuss the entire experimentally deduced magnetic phase diagram for CsCo$_2$Se$_2$ with respect to its unconventionally weak magnetic coupling. Our study characterizes CsCo$_2$Se$_2$, which is chemically and electronically posed closely to the $A_xFe_{2-y}Se_2$ superconductors, as a host of versatile magnetic interactions.

High pressure magnetic state of MnP probed by means of muon-spin rotation

We report a detailed $μ$SR study of the pressure evolution of the magnetic order in the manganese based pnictide MnP, which has been recently found to undergo a superconducting transition under pressure once the magnetic ground state is suppressed. Using the muon as a volume sensitive local magnetic probe, we identify a ferromagnetic state as well as two incommensurate helical states (with propagation vectors ${\bf Q}$ aligned along the crystallographic $c-$ and $b-$directions, respectively) which transform into each other through first order phase transitions as a function of pressure and temperature. Our data appear to support that the magnetic state from which superconductivity develops at higher pressures is an incommensurate helical phase.

High pressure research using muons at the Paul Scherrer Institute

Pressure, together with temperature and magnetic field, is an important thermodynamical parameter in physics. Investigating the response of a compound or of a material to pressure allows to elucidate ground states, investigate their interplay and interactions and determine microscopic parameters. Pressure tuning is used to establish phase diagrams, study phase transitions and identify critical points. Muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) is now a standard technique making increasing significant contribution in condensed matter physics, material science research and other fields. In this review, we will discuss specific requirements and challenges to perform muSR experiments under pressure, introduce the high-pressure muon facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland) and present selected results obtained by combining the sensitivity of the muSR technique with pressure.

Magnetic ordering in the ultra-pure site-diluted spin chain materials SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$

Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.

Probing the pairing symmetry in the over-doped Fe-based superconductor Ba_0.35Rb_0.65Fe_2As_2 as a function of hydrostatic pressure

We report muon spin rotation experiments on the magnetic penetration depth lambda and the temperature dependence of lambda^{-2} in the over-doped Fe-based high-temperature superconductor (Fe-HTS) Ba_{1-x}Rb_ xFe_2As_2 (x = 0.65) studied at ambient and under hydrostatic pressures up to p = 2.3 GPa. We find that in this system lambda^{-2}(T) is best described by d-wave scenario. This is in contrast to the case of the optimally doped x = 0.35 system which is known to be a nodeless s^{+-}-wave superconductor. This suggests that the doping induces the change of the pairing symmetry from s^{+-} to d-wave in Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. In addition, we find that the d-wave order parameter is robust against pressure, suggesting that d is the common and dominant pairing symmetry in over-doped Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. Application of pressure of p = 2.3 GPa causes a decrease of lambda(0) by less than 5 %, while at optimal doping x = 0.35 a significant decrease of lambda(0) was reported. The superconducting transition temperature T_c as well as the gap to T_c ratio 2Delta/k_BT_c show only a modest decrease with pressure. By combining the present data with those previously obtained for optimally doped system x = 0.35 and for the end member x = 1 we conclude that the SC gap symmetry as well as the pressure effects on the SC quantities strongly depend on the Rb doping level. These results are discussed in the light of the putative Lifshitz transition, i.e., a disappearance of the electron pockets in the Fermi surface of Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} upon hole doping.

Influence of hydrostatic pressure on the bulk magnetic properties of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We report on the magnetic properties of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ upon the application of hydrostatic pressure $P$ by means of macroscopic and local-probe techniques. In contrast to previously reported resistivity measurements, our dc magnetization data unambiguously demonstrate a non-monotonic $P$-dependence for $T_{N}$, i.~e., the critical transition temperature to the magnetic phase. More strikingly, we closely reproduce the recently calculated behaviour for $T_{N}$ under the assumption that $P$ lowers the $U/W$ ratio (i.~e., Coulomb repulsion energy over electronic bandwidth). Zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy measurements confirm that the local magnetic configuration is only weakly perturbed by low $P$ values, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The current results experimentally support the preservation of a $4$-in/$4$-out ground state and, simultaneously, a departure from the single-band $j_{\text{eff}} = 1/2$ model across the accessed region of the phase diagram.

Mutual independence of critical temperature and superfluid density under pressure in optimally electron-doped superconducting LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

The superconducting properties of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ in conditions of optimal electron-doping are investigated upon the application of external pressure up to $\sim 23$ kbar. Measurements of muon-spin spectroscopy and dc magnetometry evidence a clear mutual independence between the critical temperature $T_{c}$ and the low-temperature saturation value for the ratio $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superfluid density over effective band mass of Cooper pairs). Remarkably, a dramatic increase of $\sim 30$ % is reported for $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at the maximum pressure value while $T_{c}$ is substantially unaffected in the whole accessed experimental window. We argue and demonstrate that the explanation for the observed results must take the effect of non-magnetic impurities on multi-band superconductivity into account. In particular, the unique possibility to modify the ratio between intra-band and inter-bands scattering rates by acting on structural parameters while keeping the amount of chemical disorder constant is a striking result of our proposed model.

Oxygen Isotope Effects on Lattice Properties of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8)

A novel negative oxygen-isotope (16O/18O) effect (OIE) on the low-temperature tetragonal phase transition temperature T_{LTT} was observed in La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. The corresponding OIE exponent alpha(T_{LTT}) = - 0.36(5) has the same sign as alpha(T_{so}) = -0.57(6) found for the spin-stripe order temperature T_so. The fact that the LTT transition is accompanied by charge ordering (CO) implies the presence of an OIE also for the CO temperature T_co. Furthermore, a temperature dependent shortening of the c-axis with the heavier isotope is observed. These results combined with model calculations demonstrate that anharmonic electron-lattice interactions are essential for all transitions observed in the stripe phase of cuprates.

Pressure-induced electronic phase separation of magnetism and superconductivity in CrAs

The recent discovery of pressure induced superconductivity in the binary helimagnet CrAs has attracted much attention. How superconductivity emerges from the magnetic state and what is the mechanism of the superconducting pairing are two important issues which need to be resolved. In the present work, the suppression of magnetism and the occurrence of superconductivity in CrAs as a function of pressure ($p$) were studied by means of muon spin rotation. The magnetism remains bulk up to $p\simeq3.5$~kbar while its volume fraction gradually decreases with increasing pressure until it vanishes at $p\simeq$7~kbar. At 3.5 kbar superconductivity abruptly appears with its maximum $T_c \simeq 1.2$~K which decreases upon increasing the pressure. In the intermediate pressure region ($3.5\lesssim p\lesssim 7$~kbar) the superconducting and the magnetic volume fractions are spatially phase separated and compete for phase volume. Our results indicate that the less conductive magnetic phase provides additional carriers (doping) to the superconducting parts of the CrAs sample thus leading to an increase of the transition temperature ($T_c$) and of the superfluid density ($ρ_s$). A scaling of $ρ_s$ with $T_c^{3.2}$ as well as the phase separation between magnetism and superconductivity point to a conventional mechanism of the Cooper-pairing in CrAs.

Strong enhancement of conventional superconductivity near a quantum critical point of (Ca,Sr)_3Ir_4Sn_13

Competing electronic states are found in the large majority of unconventional superconductors, including high-Tc cuprates, iron based superconductors and many heavy fermion systems. The complex interplay is reflected in phase diagrams as a function of doping or other tuning parameters involving besides superconducting other phases (often magnetic) and quantum critical points. Superconductivity is also found in the vicinity of charge density wave (CDW) order in phase diagrams reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by magnetic fluctuations. There is however less knowledge about the interplay of superconductivity and CDW compared to the magnetic analogon. Here we report about microscopic studies by muon spin rotation as a function of pressure of the Ca_3Ir_4Sn_13 and Sr_3Ir_4Sn_13 cubic compounds, which display superconductivity and a structural phase transition associated with the formation of a CDW. We find a strong enhancement of the superfluid density and of the coupling strength above a pressure of about 1.6 GPa giving direct evidence of the presence of a quantum critical point separating a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase. The superconducting order parameter in both phases are found to have the same s-wave symmetry. In spite of the conventional phonon-mediated BCS character of this compound, the dependence of the effective superfluid density on the critical temperature puts this system in the "Uemura" plot close to unconventional superconductors.

Negative Oxygen Isotope Effect on the Static Spin Stripe Order in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8)

Large negative oxygen-isotope (16O/18O) effects (OIE's) on the static spin-stripe ordering temperature T_so and the magnetic volume fraction V_m were observed in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) by means of muon spin rotation experiments. The corresponding OIE exponents were found to be alpha_(T_so) = -0.57(6) and alpha_(V_m) = -0.71(9), which are sign reversed to alpha_(T_c) = 0.46(6) measured for the superconducting transition temperature T_c. This indicates that the electron-lattice interaction is involved in the stripe formation and plays an important role in the competition between bulk superconductivity and static stripe order in the cuprates.

Spin-lattice coupling induced weak dynamical magnetism in EuTiO_3 at high temperatures

EuTiO_3, which is a G-type antiferromagnet below T_N = 5.5 K, has some fascinating properties at high temperatures, suggesting that macroscopically hidden dynamically fluctuating weak magnetism exists at high temperatures. This conjecture is substantiated by magnetic field dependent magnetization measurements, which exhibit pronounced anomalies below 200 K becoming more distinctive with increasing magnetic field strength. Additional results from muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments provide evidence for weak fluctuating bulk magnetism induced by spin-lattice coupling which is strongly supported in increasing magnetic field.

Effect of pressure on the Cu and Pr magnetism in Nd(1-x)Pr(x)Ba2Cu3O7 investigated by muon spin rotation

The effect of pressure on the copper and praseodymium magnetic order in the system Nd(1-x)$Pr(x)Ba2Cu3$O7 with x=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1 was investigated by means of the muon spin rotation (muSR) technique. It was found that the effect of pressure on the Neel temperatures of both copper and praseodymium is positive for the whole range of Pr concentrations (0.3<x<1) studied. These findings are in contrast with a number of previous reports and clarify some of the puzzles related to the effect of pressure on superconductivity and magnetism in the praseodymium-substituted R}(1-x)$Pr(x)Ba2Cu3O7 systems, where R is a rare earth element.

Lattice and polarizability mediated spin activity in EuTiO_3

EuTiO_3 is shown to exhibit novel strong spin-charge-lattice coupling deep in the paramagnetic phase. Its existence is evidenced by an, until now, unknown response of the paramagnetic susceptibility at temperatures exceeding the structural phase transition temperature T_S = 282K. The "extra" features in the susceptibility follow the rotational soft zone boundary mode temperature dependence above and below T_S. The theoretical modeling consistently reproduces this behavior and provides reasoning for the stabilization of the soft optic mode other than quantum fluctuations.

Magnetic structure of superconducting Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2 as revealed by single-crystal neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of superconducting Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2 is unambiguously determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction. A long-range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments along the c-direction is revealed below the magnetic phase transition temperature Tc = 17 K. In addition, the antiferromagnetism of the Fe2+ moments still survives and the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition is also observed, although the transition temperatures of the Fe-spin density wave (SDW) order and the structural phase transition are significantly suppressed to Tn = 70 K and Ts = 90 K, respectively, compared to the parent compound EuFe2As2.We present the microscopic evidences for the coexistence of the Eu-ferromagnetism (FM) and the Fe-SDW in the superconducting crystal. The superconductivity (SC) competes with the Fe-SDW in Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2.Moreover, the comparison between Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 indicates a considerable influence of the rare-earth element Eu on the magnetism of the Fe sublattice.

Muon-spin rotation and magnetization studies of chemical and hydrostatic pressure effects in EuFe_{2}(As_{1-x}P_{x})_{2}

The magnetic phase diagram of EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ was investigated by means of magnetization and muon-spin rotation studies as a function of chemical (isovalent substitution of As by P) and hydrostatic pressure. The magnetic phase diagrams of the magnetic ordering of the Eu and Fe spins with respect to P content and hydrostatic pressure are determined and discussed. The present investigations reveal that the magnetic coupling between the Eu and the Fe sublattices strongly depends on chemical and hydrostatic pressure. It is found that chemical and hydrostatic pressure have a similar effect on the Eu and Fe magnetic order.

Nonlinear pressure dependence of T_N in almost multiferroic EuTiO_3

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition temperature T_N of EuTiO_3 has been studied as a function of pressure p. The data reveal a nonlinear dependence of T_N on p with T_N increasing with increasing pressure. The exchange interactions exhibit an analogous dependence on p as T_N (if the absolute value of the nearest neighbor interaction is considered) and there is evidence that the AFM transition is robust with increasing pressure. The corresponding Weiss temperature Θ_W remains anomalous since it always exhibits positive values. The data are analyzed within the Bloch power law model and provide excellent agreement with experiment.

Superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide: LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2

We report superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure composed of alternating superconducting BiSe2 and blocking LaO layers. The superconducting transition temperature is TC = 2.6K, as revealed from DC magnetization, resistivity and muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments. DC magnetization measurements indicate a superconducting volume fraction of approximately 80%, which is at least twice higher in comparison to that found in corresponding sulphide LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Importantly, the bulk character of superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 was confirmed by muSR.

Tuning the static spin-stripe phase and superconductivity in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) by hydrostatic pressure

Magnetization and muon spin rotation experiments were performed in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p = 2.2 GPa. It was found that the magnetic volume fraction of the static stripe phase strongly decreases linearly with pressure, while the superconducting volume fraction increases by the same amount. This demonstrates competition between bulk superconductivity and static magnetic order in the stripe phase of La_1.875Ba_0.125CuO_4 and that these phenomena occur in mutually exclusive spatial regions. The present results also reveal that the static spin-stripe phase still exists at pressures, where the long-range low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) structure is completely suppressed. This indicates that the long-range LTT structure is not necessary for stabilizing the static spin order in La_1.875Ba_0.125CuO_4.

The transition temperature of the structural instability of the system increases nonlinearly to higher temperatures with increasing x. This is interpreted theoretically by a substantial alteration in the dynamics caused by a change in the double-well potential from broad and shallow to narrow and deep.

Hybrid paramagnon phonon modes at elevated temperatures in EuTiO3

EuTiO3 (ETO) has recently experienced an enormous revival of interest because of its possible multiferroic properties which are currently in the focus of research. Unfortunately ETO is an unlikely candidate for enlarged multifunctionality since the mode softening - typical for ferroelectrics - remains incomplete, and the antiferromagnetic properties appear at 5.5K only. However, a strong coupling between lattice and Eu spins exists and leads to the appearance of a magnon-phonon-hybrid mode at elevated temperatures as evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), muon spin rotation (μSR) experiments and model predictions based on a coupled spin-polarizability Hamiltonian. This novel finding supports the notion of strong magneto-dielectric (MD) effects being realized in ETO and opens new strategies in material design and technological applications.

Here we show that this displacive second order structural phase transition can be shifted to higher temperatures by the application of an external magnetic field (increased by 4 K for mu_{0}H = 9 T). This observed field dependence is in agreement with theoretical predictions based on a coupled spin-anharmonic-phonon interaction model.

Superconductivity and magnetism in RbxFe2-ySe2: Impact of thermal treatment on mesoscopic phase separation

An extended study of the superconducting and normal-state properties of various as-grown and post-annealed RbxFe2-ySe2 single crystals is presented. Magnetization experiments evidence that annealing of RbxFe2-ySe2 at 413 K, well below the onset of phase separation Tp=489 K, neither changes the magnetic nor the superconducting properties of the crystals. In addition, annealing at 563 K, well above Tp, suppresses the superconducting transition temperature Tc and leads to an increase of the antiferromagnetic susceptibility accompanied by the creation of ferromagnetic impurity phases, which are developing with annealing time. However, annealing at T=488K=Tp increases Tc up to 33.3 K, sharpens the superconducting transition, increases the lower critical field, and strengthens the screening efficiency of the applied magnetic field. Resistivity measurements of the as-grown and optimally annealed samples reveal an increase of the upper critical field along both crystallographic directions as well as its anisotropy. Muon spin rotation and scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments suggest the coexistence of two phases below Tp: a magnetic majority phase of Rb2Fe4Se5 and a non-magnetic minority phase of Rb0.5Fe2Se2. Both microscopic techniques indicate that annealing the specimens just at Tp does not affect the volume fraction of the two phases, although the magnetic field distribution in the samples changes substantially. This suggests that the microstructure of the sample, caused by mesoscopic phase separation, is modified by annealing just at Tp, leading to an improvement of the superconducting properties of RbxFe2-ySe2 and an enhancement of Tc.

Muon spin rotation study of the intercalated graphite superconductor CaC6 at low temperatures

Muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments were performed on the intercalated graphite CaC6 in the normal and superconducting state down to 20 mK. In addition, AC magnetization measurements were carried out resulting in an anisotropic upper critical field Hc2, from which the coherence lengths xi_ab(0)=36.3(1.5) nm and xi_c(0)=4.3(7) nm were estimated. The anisotropy parameter gamma_H= H_c2_ab/H_c2_c increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. A single isotropic s-wave description of superconductivity cannot account for this behaviour. From magnetic field dependent muSR experiments the absolute value of the in-plane magnetic penetretion depth lambda_ab=78(3) nm was determined. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density rho_s(T) is slightly better described by a two-gap than a single-gap model.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the magnetic penetration depth in the Fe-based superconductor Ba_(1-x)Rb_(x)Fe2As2

Measurements of the magnetic penetration depth (lambda) in the Fe-based superconductor Ba_(1-x)Rb_xFe_2As_2 (x=0.3, 0.35, 0.4) were carried out using the muon-spin rotation muSR technique. The temperature dependence of lambda is well described by a two-gap s+s-wave scenario with a small gap Delta_1 = 1 - 3 mev and a large gap Delta_2 = 7 - 9 mev. By combining the present data with those obtained for RbFe_2As_2 a decrease of the BCS ratio 2Delta_2/(k_B)(T_c) with increasing Rb content x is observed. On the other hand, the BCS ratio 2Delta_1/(k_B)(T_c) is almost independent of x. In addition, the contribution of Delta_1 to the superfluid density is found to increase with x. These results are discussed in the light of the suppression of interband processes upon hole doping.

muSR investigation of magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling in Cu2OSeO3

A detailed zero and transverse field (ZF&TF) muon spin rotation (muSR) investigation of magnetism and the magneto-electric coupling in Cu2OSeO3 is reported. An internal magnetic field B_int(T=0) = 85.37(25) mT was found, in agreement with a ferrimagnetic state below Tc = 57.0(1) K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic order parameter is well described by the relation B_int = B(0)(1-(T/Tc)^2)^b with an effective exponent b = 0.39(1) which is close to the critical exponent B ~ 1/3 for a three dimensional (3D) magnetic system. Just above Tc the muon relaxation rate follows the power low λ(T)\propto (T/Tc - 1)^ωwith ω= 1.06(9), which is characteristic for 3D ferromagnets. Measurements of B_int(T) with and without an applied electrostatic field E = 1.66 x 10^5 V/m suggest a possible electric field effect of magnitude ΔBv = Bv(0 V)-Bv(500 V) = - 0.4(4) mT.

Strong coupling between Eu2+ spins and Fe2As2 layers in EuFe1.9Co0.1As2 observed with NMR

A combination of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were performed on single-crystal EuFe1.9Co0.1As2. The strength of the hyperfine interaction between the 75As nuclei and the Eu^(2+) 4f states suggests a strong coupling between the Eu^(2+) moments and the Fe1.9Co0.1As2 layers. Such a strong interlayer coupling may be due to an indirect exchange interaction between the localized Eu^(2+) 4f moments, mediated by the Fe 3d conduction electrons. Magnetic susceptibility as well as 75As-NMR measurements reveal a decrease of the SDW transition temperature to T_SDW = 120 K as a result of Co doping. A change of the slope in the temperature dependence of the NMR frequency of the 75As lower-satellite line was observed at 225 K. At the same temperature also a change of the satellite line shape was found. These changes of the NMR spectra may be caused by the formation of a nematic phase below 225 K in EuFe1.9Co0.1As2.

Study of the anisotropic magnetic order of the Eu sublattice in single crystals of EuFe_2-xCo_xAs_2 (x = 0, 0.2) by means of magnetization and magnetic torque

Here, we present a combination of magnetization and magnetic torque experiments to investigate the magnetic orders in undoped EuFe2As2 and Co doped EuFe1.8Co0.2As2 single crystals. Although at low temperatures typical results for an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state in EuFe2As2 were found, our data strongly indicate the occurrence of a canted antiferromagnetic (C-AFM) order of the Eu2+ moments between 17 K and 19 K, observed even in the lowest studied magnetic fields. However, unlike in the parent compound, no low-field and low-temperature AFM state of the Eu^2+ moments was observed in the doped EuFe1.8Co0.2As2. Only a C-AFM phase is present at low fields and low temperatures, with a reduced magnetic anisotropy as compared to the undoped system. We present and discuss for both, EuFe2As2 and EuFe1.8Co0.2As2, the experimentally deduced magnetic phase diagrams of the magnetic ordering of the Eu^2+ sublattice with respect to the temperature, the applied magnetic field, and its orientation to the crystallographic axes. It is likely that the magnetic coupling of the Eu and the Fe sublattice is strongly depending on Co doping, having detrimental influence on the magnetic phase diagrams as determined in this work. Their impact on the occurrence of superconductivity with higher Co doping is discussed.
