Spin-liquid signatures in the quantum critical regime of pressurized CePdAl

CePdAl is a prototypical frustrated Kondo lattice with partial long-range order (LRO) at $T_\mathrm{N}=2.7$ K. Previous bulk experiments under hydrostatic pressure found signatures for a quantum critical regime that extends from $p_\mathrm{c} \approx 0.9$ GPa, where LRO disappears, up to $\sim 1.7$ GPa. We employed extensive muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments under pressure. The continuous and complete suppression of LRO at $p_\mathrm{c}$ is confirmed. Above $T_\mathrm{N}(p)$ and beyond $p_\mathrm{c}$, an additional crossover scale $T^\ast(p)$ characterizes the change from pure to stretched exponential relaxation in zero field. Remarkably $T^\ast(p)$ agrees with previously determined signatures of entropy accumulation above LRO. This coincidence microscopically evidences fluctuating frustrated spins at $T\leq T^\ast$ with spin-liquid behavior. Power-law divergences of the temperature and longitudinal field dependences of the relaxation rate, with time-field scaling, at pressures between $p_c$ and 1.7 GPa characterize this regime as quantum critical.

Time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order in a kagome superconductor

The kagome lattice, the most prominent structural motif in quantum physics, benefits from inherent nontrivial geometry to host diverse quantum phases, ranging from spin-liquid phases, topological matter to intertwined orders, and most rarely unconventional superconductivity. Recently, charge sensitive probes have suggested that the kagome superconductors AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit unconventional chiral charge order, which is analogous to the long-sought-after quantum order in the Haldane model or Varma model. However, direct evidence for the time-reversal symmetry-breaking of the charge order remains elusive. Here we utilize muon spin relaxation to probe the kagome charge order and superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place just below the charge ordering temperature and persists into the superconducting state. Remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. We further show the multigap nature of superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5 and that the T_c/lambda_{ab}^{-2} ratio is comparable to those of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Our results point to time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order intertwining with unconventional superconductivity in the correlated kagome lattice.

Magnetism driven by strong electronic correlation in the heavily carrier-doped iron oxypnictide LaFeAsO$_{0.49}$H$_{0.51}$

The magnetism of the second antiferromagnetic phase (AF2) arising in the iron-based LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_{x}$ superconductor for $x\gtrsim0.4$ was investigated by muon spin rotation measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.6 GPa. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm N}$) obtained for a sample with $x=0.51$ exhibits considerably greater sensitivity to pressure than that in the pristine antiferromagnetic phase (AF1, $x\lesssim0.06$). Moreover, while the AF1 phase is always accompanied by the structural transition (from tetragonal to orthorhombic) at a temperature ($T_{\rm s}$) which is slightly higher than $T_{\rm N}$, the AF2 phase prevails at higher pressures above $\sim$1.5 GPa where the structural transition is suppressed ($T_{\rm s}=0$). These features indicate that the microscopic origin of the AF2 phase is distinct from that of AF1, suggesting that electronic correlation plays important role in the former phase. We argue that the orbital-selective Mott transition is a plausible scenario to account for the observed pressure dependence of $T_{\rm N}$ and $T_{\rm s}$ in the AF2 phase.

Multigap superconductivity in the Mo$_5$PB$_2$ boron-phosphorus compound

The tetragonal Mo$_5$PB$_2$ compound was recently reported to show superconductivity with a critical temperature up to 9.2 K. In search of evidence for multiple superconducting gaps in Mo$_5$PB$_2$, comprehensive measurements, including magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements were carried out. Data from both low-temperature superfluid density and electronic specific heat suggest a nodeless superconducting ground state in Mo$_5$PB$_2$. Two superconducting energy gaps $Δ_0$ = 1.02 meV (25%) and 1.49 meV (75%) are required to describe the low-$T$ electronic specific-heat data. The multigap features are clearly evidenced by the field dependence of the electronic specific-heat coefficient and the Gaussian relaxation rate in the superconducting state (i.e., superfluid density), as well as by the temperature dependence of the upper critical field. By combining our extensive experimental results with numerical band-structure calculations, we provide compelling evidence of multigap superconductivity in Mo$_5$PB$_2$.

Pressure induced topological quantum phase transition in Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2

We report the pressure (p_max = 1.5 GPa) evolution of the crystal structure of the Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2 by means of neutron diffraction experiments. We find that the fundamental non-centrosymmetric structure T_d is fully suppressed and transforms into a centrosymmertic 1T' structure at a critical pressure of p_cr = 1.2 GPa. This is strong evidence for a pressure induced quantum phase transition (QPT) between topological to a trivial electronic state. Although the topological QPT has strong effect on magnetoresistance, it is interesting that the superconducting critical temperature T_c, the superfluid density, and the SC gap all change smoothly and continuously across p_cr and no sudden effects are seen concomitantly with the suppression of the T_d structure. This implies that the T_c, and thus the SC pairing strength, is unaffected by the topological QPT. However, the QPT requires the change in the SC gap symmetry from non-trivial s+- to a trivial s++ state, which we discuss in this work. Our systematic characterizations of the structure and superconducting properties associated with the topological QPT provide deep insight into the pressure induced phase diagram in this topological quantum material.

Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Dome in the Heavy-Fermion $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$ System

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

Tunable Berry Curvature Through Magnetic Phase Competition in a Topological Kagome Magnet

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and material science. Along these lines, several kagome magnets have appeared as the most promising platforms. However, the magnetic nature of these materials in the presence of topological state remains an unsolved issue. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the kagome magnet Co_3Sn_2S_2. Using muon spin-rotation, we present evidence for competing magnetic orders in the kagome lattice of this compound. Our results show that while the sample exhibits an out-of-plane ferromagnetic ground state, an in-plane antiferromagnetic state appears at temperatures above 90 K, eventually attaining a volume fraction of 80% around 170 K, before reaching a non-magnetic state. Strikingly, the reduction of the anomalous Hall conductivity above 90 K linearly follows the disappearance of the volume fraction of the ferromagnetic state. We further show that the competition of these magnetic phases is tunable through applying either an external magnetic field or hydrostatic pressure. Our results taken together suggest the thermal and quantum tuning of Berry curvature field via external tuning of magnetic order. Our study shows that Co_3Sn_2S_2 is a rare example where the magnetic competition drives the thermodynamic evolution of the Berry curvature field, thus tuning its topological state.

Cooperative coupling of static magnetism and bulk superconductivity in the stripe phase of La_2-xBa_xCuO_4: Pressure- and doping-dependent studies

Static spin-stripe order and superconductivity were systematically studied in La_2-xBa_xCuO_4 (0.11 - 0.17) at ambient pressure by means of magnetization and muSR experiments. We find that all the investigated La_2-xBa_xCuO_4 samples exhibit static spin-stripe order and that the quasi two-dimensional superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c1 and the static spin-stripe order temperature T_so have very similar values throughout the phase diagram. Moreover, the magnetic and the SC properties of the x = 0.155 (LBCO-0.155) and x = 0.17 (LBCO-0.17) samples were studied under hydrostatic pressure. As a remarkable result, in these bulk cuprate superconductors the three-dimensional SC transition temperature T_c and T_so nearly coincide at all pressure investigated (0 - 2.3 GPa). We also observed a pressure induced transition from long-range spin stripe order to a disordered magnetic state at 1.6 GPa in LBCO-0.155, coexisting with a SC state with substantial superfluid density. In LBCO-0.17 a disordered magnetic state is present at all p. The present results indicate that static magnetic order and SC pairing correlations develop in a cooperative fashion in La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, and provide a new route of understanding the complex interplay between static magnetism and superconductivity in the stripe phase of cuprates.

Coexistence of low moment magnetism and superconductivity in tetragonal FeS and suppression of $T_\mathrm{c}$ under pressure

We report local probe ($μ$SR) measurements on the recently discovered tetragonal FeS superconductor which has been predicted to be electronically very similar to superconducting FeSe. Most remarkably, we find that low moment ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}μ_\mathrm{B})$ disordered magnetism with a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 20$ K microscopically coexists with bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{c}=4.3(1)$ K. From transverse field $μ$SR we obtain an in-plane penetration depth $λ_\mathrm{ab}(0)=223(2)$ nm for FeS. The temperature dependence of the corresponding superfluid density $λ_\mathrm{ab}^{-2}(T)$ indicates a fully gapped superconducting state and is consistent with a two gap s-wave model. Additionally, we find that the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}$ of FeS continuously decreases for hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa.

High pressure magnetic state of MnP probed by means of muon-spin rotation

We report a detailed $μ$SR study of the pressure evolution of the magnetic order in the manganese based pnictide MnP, which has been recently found to undergo a superconducting transition under pressure once the magnetic ground state is suppressed. Using the muon as a volume sensitive local magnetic probe, we identify a ferromagnetic state as well as two incommensurate helical states (with propagation vectors ${\bf Q}$ aligned along the crystallographic $c-$ and $b-$directions, respectively) which transform into each other through first order phase transitions as a function of pressure and temperature. Our data appear to support that the magnetic state from which superconductivity develops at higher pressures is an incommensurate helical phase.

High pressure research using muons at the Paul Scherrer Institute

Pressure, together with temperature and magnetic field, is an important thermodynamical parameter in physics. Investigating the response of a compound or of a material to pressure allows to elucidate ground states, investigate their interplay and interactions and determine microscopic parameters. Pressure tuning is used to establish phase diagrams, study phase transitions and identify critical points. Muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) is now a standard technique making increasing significant contribution in condensed matter physics, material science research and other fields. In this review, we will discuss specific requirements and challenges to perform muSR experiments under pressure, introduce the high-pressure muon facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland) and present selected results obtained by combining the sensitivity of the muSR technique with pressure.

Magnetic ordering in the ultra-pure site-diluted spin chain materials SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$

Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.

Probing the pairing symmetry in the over-doped Fe-based superconductor Ba_0.35Rb_0.65Fe_2As_2 as a function of hydrostatic pressure

We report muon spin rotation experiments on the magnetic penetration depth lambda and the temperature dependence of lambda^{-2} in the over-doped Fe-based high-temperature superconductor (Fe-HTS) Ba_{1-x}Rb_ xFe_2As_2 (x = 0.65) studied at ambient and under hydrostatic pressures up to p = 2.3 GPa. We find that in this system lambda^{-2}(T) is best described by d-wave scenario. This is in contrast to the case of the optimally doped x = 0.35 system which is known to be a nodeless s^{+-}-wave superconductor. This suggests that the doping induces the change of the pairing symmetry from s^{+-} to d-wave in Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. In addition, we find that the d-wave order parameter is robust against pressure, suggesting that d is the common and dominant pairing symmetry in over-doped Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. Application of pressure of p = 2.3 GPa causes a decrease of lambda(0) by less than 5 %, while at optimal doping x = 0.35 a significant decrease of lambda(0) was reported. The superconducting transition temperature T_c as well as the gap to T_c ratio 2Delta/k_BT_c show only a modest decrease with pressure. By combining the present data with those previously obtained for optimally doped system x = 0.35 and for the end member x = 1 we conclude that the SC gap symmetry as well as the pressure effects on the SC quantities strongly depend on the Rb doping level. These results are discussed in the light of the putative Lifshitz transition, i.e., a disappearance of the electron pockets in the Fermi surface of Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} upon hole doping.

Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of $R$CoPO ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm). II

The direct correspondence between Co band ferromagnetism and structural parameters is investigated in the pnictide oxides $R$CoPO for different rare-earth ions ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy and {\it ab-initio} calculations, complementing our results published previously [G. Prando {\it et al.}, {\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 87}, 064401 (2013)]. Both the transition temperature to the ferromagnetic phase $T_{_{\textrm{C}}}$ and the volume of the crystallographic unit cell $V$ are found to be conveniently tuned by the $R$ ionic radius and/or external pressure. A linear correlation between $T_{_{\textrm{C}}}$ and $V$ is reported and {\it ab-initio} calculations unambiguously demonstrate a full equivalence of chemical and external pressures. As such, $R$ ions are shown to be influencing the ferromagnetic phase only via the induced structural shrinkage without involving any active role from the electronic $f$ degrees of freedom, which are only giving a sizeable magnetic contribution at much lower temperatures.

Mutual independence of critical temperature and superfluid density under pressure in optimally electron-doped superconducting LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

The superconducting properties of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ in conditions of optimal electron-doping are investigated upon the application of external pressure up to $\sim 23$ kbar. Measurements of muon-spin spectroscopy and dc magnetometry evidence a clear mutual independence between the critical temperature $T_{c}$ and the low-temperature saturation value for the ratio $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superfluid density over effective band mass of Cooper pairs). Remarkably, a dramatic increase of $\sim 30$ % is reported for $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at the maximum pressure value while $T_{c}$ is substantially unaffected in the whole accessed experimental window. We argue and demonstrate that the explanation for the observed results must take the effect of non-magnetic impurities on multi-band superconductivity into account. In particular, the unique possibility to modify the ratio between intra-band and inter-bands scattering rates by acting on structural parameters while keeping the amount of chemical disorder constant is a striking result of our proposed model.

Oxygen Isotope Effects on Lattice Properties of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8)

A novel negative oxygen-isotope (16O/18O) effect (OIE) on the low-temperature tetragonal phase transition temperature T_{LTT} was observed in La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. The corresponding OIE exponent alpha(T_{LTT}) = - 0.36(5) has the same sign as alpha(T_{so}) = -0.57(6) found for the spin-stripe order temperature T_so. The fact that the LTT transition is accompanied by charge ordering (CO) implies the presence of an OIE also for the CO temperature T_co. Furthermore, a temperature dependent shortening of the c-axis with the heavier isotope is observed. These results combined with model calculations demonstrate that anharmonic electron-lattice interactions are essential for all transitions observed in the stripe phase of cuprates.

Pressure-induced electronic phase separation of magnetism and superconductivity in CrAs

The recent discovery of pressure induced superconductivity in the binary helimagnet CrAs has attracted much attention. How superconductivity emerges from the magnetic state and what is the mechanism of the superconducting pairing are two important issues which need to be resolved. In the present work, the suppression of magnetism and the occurrence of superconductivity in CrAs as a function of pressure ($p$) were studied by means of muon spin rotation. The magnetism remains bulk up to $p\simeq3.5$~kbar while its volume fraction gradually decreases with increasing pressure until it vanishes at $p\simeq$7~kbar. At 3.5 kbar superconductivity abruptly appears with its maximum $T_c \simeq 1.2$~K which decreases upon increasing the pressure. In the intermediate pressure region ($3.5\lesssim p\lesssim 7$~kbar) the superconducting and the magnetic volume fractions are spatially phase separated and compete for phase volume. Our results indicate that the less conductive magnetic phase provides additional carriers (doping) to the superconducting parts of the CrAs sample thus leading to an increase of the transition temperature ($T_c$) and of the superfluid density ($ρ_s$). A scaling of $ρ_s$ with $T_c^{3.2}$ as well as the phase separation between magnetism and superconductivity point to a conventional mechanism of the Cooper-pairing in CrAs.

Slow magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in fluorine-doped NdFeAsO

Among the widely studied superconducting iron-pnictide compounds belonging to the Ln1111 family (with Ln a lanthanide), a systematic investigation of the crossover region between the superconducting and the antiferromagnetic phase for the Ln = Nd case has been missing. We fill this gap by focusing on the intermediate doping regime of NdFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by means of dc-magnetometry and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. The long-range order we detect at low fluorine doping is replaced by short-range magnetic interactions at x = 0.08, where also superconductivity appears. In this case, longitudinal-field muon-spin spectroscopy experiments show clear evidence of slow magnetic fluctuations that disappear at low temperatures. This fluctuating component is ascribed to the glassy-like character of the magnetically ordered phase of NdFeAsO at intermediate fluorine doping.

Strong enhancement of conventional superconductivity near a quantum critical point of (Ca,Sr)_3Ir_4Sn_13

Competing electronic states are found in the large majority of unconventional superconductors, including high-Tc cuprates, iron based superconductors and many heavy fermion systems. The complex interplay is reflected in phase diagrams as a function of doping or other tuning parameters involving besides superconducting other phases (often magnetic) and quantum critical points. Superconductivity is also found in the vicinity of charge density wave (CDW) order in phase diagrams reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by magnetic fluctuations. There is however less knowledge about the interplay of superconductivity and CDW compared to the magnetic analogon. Here we report about microscopic studies by muon spin rotation as a function of pressure of the Ca_3Ir_4Sn_13 and Sr_3Ir_4Sn_13 cubic compounds, which display superconductivity and a structural phase transition associated with the formation of a CDW. We find a strong enhancement of the superfluid density and of the coupling strength above a pressure of about 1.6 GPa giving direct evidence of the presence of a quantum critical point separating a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase. The superconducting order parameter in both phases are found to have the same s-wave symmetry. In spite of the conventional phonon-mediated BCS character of this compound, the dependence of the effective superfluid density on the critical temperature puts this system in the "Uemura" plot close to unconventional superconductors.

Weak Interband-Coupling Superconductivity in the Filled Skutterudite LaPt4Ge12

The superconducting pairing state of LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is studied by measuring the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,B)$ and the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$ using a tunnel-diode-oscillator (TDO)-based method and by transverse field muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) spectroscopy. $λ(T)$ follows an exponential-type temperature dependence at $T\ll T_{c}$, but its zero-temperature value $λ(0)$ increases linearly with magnetic field. Detailed analyses demonstrate that both $λ(T)$ and the corresponding $ρ_{s}(T)$, measured in the Meissner state by the TDO method are well described by a two-gap $γ$ model with gap sizes of $Δ_1(0)=1.31k_{B}T_c$ and $Δ_2(0)=1.80k_{B}T_c$ and a very weak interband coupling. In contrast, $ρ_s(T)$, derived from the $μ\rm{SR}$ data taken in a small field, can be fitted by a single-gap BCS model with a gap close to $Δ_2(0)$. We conclude that LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is a marginal two-gap superconductor and the small gap $Δ_1$ seems to be destroyed by a small magnetic field. In comparison, in PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ the $4f$-electrons may enhance the interband coupling and, therefore, give rise to more robust multiband superconductivity.

Effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties of $R$CoAsO ($R$ = La, Pr, Sm): a $μ$SR study

We report on a detailed investigation of the itinerant ferromagnets LaCoAsO, PrCoAsO and SmCoAsO performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy upon the application of external hydrostatic pressures $p$ up to $2.4$ GPa. These materials are shown to be magnetically hard in view of the weak dependence of both critical temperatures $T_{C}$ and internal fields at the muon site on $p$. In the cases $R$ = La and Sm, the behaviour of the internal field is substantially unaltered up to $p = 2.4$ GPa. A much richer phenomenology is detected in PrCoAsO instead, possibly associated with a strong $p$ dependence of the statistical population of the two different crystallographic sites for the muon. Surprisingly, results are notably different from what is observed in the case of the isostructural compounds $R$CoPO, where the full As/P substitution is already inducing a strong chemical pressure within the lattice but $p$ is still very effective in further affecting the magnetic properties.

Low-temperature magnetic fluctuations in the Kondo insulator SmB6

We present the results of a systematic investigation of the magnetic properties of the three-dimensional Kondo topological insulator SmB6 using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. The muSR measurements exhibit magnetic field fluctuations in SmB6 below 15 K due to electronic moments present in the system. However, no evidence for magnetic ordering is found down to 19 mK. The observed magnetism in SmB6 is homogeneous in nature throughout the full volume of the sample. Bulk magnetization measurements on the same sample show consistent behavior. The agreement between muSR, magnetization, and NMR results strongly indicate the appearance of intrinsic bulk magnetic in-gap states associated with fluctuating magnetic fields in SmB6 at low temperature.

Magnetic field distribution and characteristic fields of the vortex lattice for a clean superconducting niobium sample in an external field applied along a three-fold axis

The field distribution in the vortex lattice of a pure niobium single crystal with an external field applied along a three-fold axis has been investigated by the transverse-field muon-spin-rotation (TF-$μ$SR) technique over a wide range of temperatures and fields. The experimental data have been analyzed with the Delrieu's solution for the form factor supplemented by phenomenological formulas for the parameters. This has enabled us to experimentally establish the temperatures and fields for the Delrieu's, Ginzburg-Landau's, and Klein's regions of the vortex lattice. Using the numerical solution of the quasiclassical Eilenberger's equation the experimental results have been reasonably understood. They should apply to all clean BCS superconductors. The analytical Delrieu's model supplemented by phenomenological formulas for its parameters is found to be reliable for analyzing TF-$μ$SR experimental data for a substantial part of the mixed phase. The Abrikosov's limit is contained in it.

Negative Oxygen Isotope Effect on the Static Spin Stripe Order in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8)

Large negative oxygen-isotope (16O/18O) effects (OIE's) on the static spin-stripe ordering temperature T_so and the magnetic volume fraction V_m were observed in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) by means of muon spin rotation experiments. The corresponding OIE exponents were found to be alpha_(T_so) = -0.57(6) and alpha_(V_m) = -0.71(9), which are sign reversed to alpha_(T_c) = 0.46(6) measured for the superconducting transition temperature T_c. This indicates that the electron-lattice interaction is involved in the stripe formation and plays an important role in the competition between bulk superconductivity and static stripe order in the cuprates.

Pressure-induced quantum critical and multicritical points in a frustrated spin liquid

The quantum spin liquid compound (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ (PHCC) is studied by $μ$SR under hydrostatic pressures up to 23.6 kbar. At low temperatures, pressure-induced incommensurate magnetic order is detected beyond a quantum critical point at $P_c\sim4.3$ kbar. An additional phase transition to a different ordered phase is observed at $P_1\sim 13.4$ kbar. The data indicate that the high-pressure phase may be a commensurate one. The established $(P-T)$ phase diagram reveals the corresponding pressure-induced multicritical point at $P_1$, $T_1=2.0$ K.

SrPt$_3$P: two-band single-gap superconductor

The magnetic penetration depth ($λ$) as a function of applied magnetic field and temperature in SrPt$_3$P($T_c\simeq8.4$ K) was studied by means of muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR). The dependence of $λ^{-2}$ on temperature suggests the existence of a single $s-$wave energy gap with the zero-temperature value $Δ=1.58(2)$ meV. At the same time $λ$ was found to be strongly field dependent which is the characteristic feature of the nodal gap and/or multi-gap systems. The multi-gap nature of the superconduicting state is further confirmed by observation of an upward curvature of the upper critical field. This apparent contradiction would be resolved with SrPt$_3$P being a two-band superconductor with equal gaps but different coherence lengths within the two Fermi surface sheets.

Superconducting and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir4Sn13

Magnetization and muon spin relaxation or rotation (muSR) measurements have been performed to study the superconducting and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir4Sn13. From magnetization measurements the lower and upper critical fields of Sr3Ir4Sn13 are found to be 81(1) Oe and 14.4(2) kOe, respectively. Zero-field muSR data show no sign of any magnetic ordering or weak magnetism in Sr3Ir4Sn13. Transverse-field muSR measurements in the vortex state provided the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. The dependence of penetration depth with temperature is consistent with the existence of single s-wave energy gap in the superconducting state of Sr3Ir4Sn13 with a gap value of 0.82(2) meV at absolute zero temperature. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 291(3) nm. The gap to Tc ratio is 2.1(1), indicates that Sr3Ir4Sn13 should be considered as a strong-coupling superconductor.

Evidence for Cooper Pair Diffraction on the Vortex Lattice of Superconducting Niobium

We investigated the Abrikosov vortex lattice (VL) of a pure Niobium single crystal with the muon spin rotation (μSR) technique. Analysis of the μSR data in the framework of the BCS-Gor'kov theory allowed us to determine microscopic parameters and the limitations of the theory. With decreasing temperature the field variation around the vortex cores deviates substantially from the predictions of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and adopts a pronounced conical shape. This is evidence of partial diffraction of Cooper pairs on the VL predicted by Delrieu for clean superconductors.

Evolution of magnetic interactions in a pressure-induced Jahn-Teller driven magnetic dimensionality switch

We present the results of high-field magnetization and muon-spin relaxation measurements on the coordination polymer CuF_2(H_2O)_2(pyrazine) in pressures up to 22.5 kbar. We observe a transition from a quasi-two-dimensional to a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic phase at 9.1 kbar, driven by a rotation of the Jahn-Teller axis. Long-range antiferromagnetic ordering is seen in both regimes, as well as a phase separation in the critical pressure region. The magnetic dimensionality switching as pressure is increased is accompanied by a halving of the primary magnetic exchange energy J and a fivefold decrease in the ordering temperature T_N. J decreases gradually with pressure in the two-dimensional phase, and then increases in the one-dimensional regime. We relate both effects to the changes in the crystal structure with applied pressure.

Low superfluid density and possible multi-gap superconductivity in BiS2-based layered superconductor Bi4O4S3

The magnetic penetration depth as a function of temperature in Bi4O4S3 was studied by muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The superfluid density of Bi4O4S3 is found to be very low. The dependence of penetration depth on temperature possibly suggests the existence of two s-wave type energy gaps with the zero-temperature values of 0.93(3) and 0.09(4) meV. The upturn in the temperature dependence of the upper critical field close to Tc further supports multi-gap superconductivity in Bi4O4S3. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental studies. However, a single-gap s-wave model fit with a gap of 0.88(2) meV can not be ruled out completely. The value of penetration depth at T = 0 K is estimated to be of 861(17) nm, one of the largest of all known layered superconductors, reflecting a very low superfluid density.

We investigate magnetic ordering in metallic Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) and discuss the unusual magnetic phase, which was recently discovered for Mn concentrations x > 10%. We argue that it can be understood as a Griffiths-type phase that forms above the quantum critical point associated with the suppression of the stripe-antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) order in BaFe2As2 by the randomly introduced localized Mn moments acting as strong magnetic impurities. While the SDW transition at x = 0, 2.5% and 5% remains equally sharp, in the x = 12% sample we observe an abrupt smearing of the antiferromagnetic transition in temperature and a considerable suppression of the spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. According to our muon-spin-relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron-scattering data, antiferromagnetically ordered rare regions start forming in the x = 12% sample significantly above the Néel temperature of the parent compound. Upon cooling, their volume grows continuously, leading to an increase in the magnetic Bragg intensity and to the gradual opening of a partial spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Using neutron Larmor diffraction, we also demonstrate that the magnetically ordered volume is characterized by a finite orthorhombic distortion, which could not be resolved in previous diffraction studies most probably due to its coexistence with the tetragonal phase and a microstrain-induced broadening of the Bragg reflections. We argue that Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) could represent an interesting model spin-glass system, in which localized magnetic moments are randomly embedded into a SDW metal with Fermi surface nesting.

Superconducting parameters of BaPt(4-x)Au(x)Ge12 filled skutterudite

We report on a study of the superconducting properties for a series of polycrystalline BaPt(4-x)Au(x)Ge12 filled skutterudite compounds for x = 0, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. Muon spin rotation (muSR) spectroscopy as well as magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements were performed. The magnetic penetration depth λ, the coherence length ξ, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κare evaluated. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described by an s-wave superconducting gap and this classical scenario is supported by the field-independent λ. The gap-to-Tc ratio Δ/kTc increases with the Au content from 1.70 for x = 0 to 2.1(1) for x = 1. By combining muSR, magnetization, and specific heat data, we find that BaPt(4-x)Au(x)Ge12 compounds are in between the dirty and clean limits with mean free paths of the carriers l ~ ξ. Interestingly, resistivity data for BaPt4Ge12 indicate a much higher upper critical field, which is probably due to defects or impurities close to the surface of the crystallites.

Superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide: LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2

We report superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure composed of alternating superconducting BiSe2 and blocking LaO layers. The superconducting transition temperature is TC = 2.6K, as revealed from DC magnetization, resistivity and muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments. DC magnetization measurements indicate a superconducting volume fraction of approximately 80%, which is at least twice higher in comparison to that found in corresponding sulphide LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Importantly, the bulk character of superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 was confirmed by muSR.

Tuning the static spin-stripe phase and superconductivity in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) by hydrostatic pressure

Magnetization and muon spin rotation experiments were performed in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p = 2.2 GPa. It was found that the magnetic volume fraction of the static stripe phase strongly decreases linearly with pressure, while the superconducting volume fraction increases by the same amount. This demonstrates competition between bulk superconductivity and static magnetic order in the stripe phase of La_1.875Ba_0.125CuO_4 and that these phenomena occur in mutually exclusive spatial regions. The present results also reveal that the static spin-stripe phase still exists at pressures, where the long-range low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) structure is completely suppressed. This indicates that the long-range LTT structure is not necessary for stabilizing the static spin order in La_1.875Ba_0.125CuO_4.

"Cigar" Fermi surface as a possible requisite for superconductivity in iron-based superconductors

Recently discovered A-Fe-Se (A - alkali metal) materials have questioned the most popular theories of iron-based superconductors because of their unusual electronic structure [1]. Controversial photoemission data taken in the superconducting state [2-7] are in conflict with highly magnetic state seen by neutron-, muSR-spectroscopies and transport/thermodynamic probes [8-10]. These results lead to suggestions to consider all iron-based materials as originating from Mott-insulators or semiconductors, thus once again raising the question of close relation between the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors [e.g. 2]. Here we study electronic and magnetic properties of Rb0.77Fe1.61Se2 (Tc = 32.6 K) in normal and superconducting states by means of photoemission and muSR spectroscopies as well as band structure calculations. We demonstrate that the puzzling behavior of these novel materials is the result of separation into metallic (~12%) and insulating (~ 88%) phases. Only the former becomes superconducting and has a usual electronic structure of electron-doped FeSe-slabs. Our results thus imply that the antiferromagnetic insulating phase is just a byproduct of Rb-intercalation and its magnetic properties have hardly any relation to the superconductivity. Instead, we find that also in this, already third class of iron-based compounds, the key ingredient for superconductivity is a certain proximity of a van Hove singularity to the Fermi level. These findings set the direction for effective search of new superconducting materials.

Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr)

We report a detailed investigation of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr) and LaCoAsO materials performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy. Zero-field measurements show that the electrons localized on the Pr$^{3+}$ ions do not play any role in the static magnetic properties of the compounds. Magnetism at the local level is indeed fully dominated by the weakly-itinerant ferromagnetism from the Co sublattice only. The increase of the chemical pressure triggered by the different ionic radii of La$^{3+}$ and Pr$^{3+}$, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in enhancing the value of the magnetic critical temperature and can be mimicked by the application of external hydrostatic pressure up to 24 kbar. A sharp discontinuity in the local magnetic field at the muon site in LaCoPO at around 5 kbar suggests a sizeable modification in the band structure of the material upon increasing pressure. This scenario is qualitatively supported by \emph{ab-initio} density-functional theory calculations.

Direct observation of the quantum critical point in heavy fermion CeRhSi$_3$

We report on muon spin rotation studies of the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhSi$_3$. A drastic and monotonic suppression of the internal fields, at the lowest measured temperature, was observed upon an increase of external pressure. Our data suggest that the ordered moments are gradually quenched with increasing pressure, in a manner different from the pressure dependence of the Néel temperature. At $\unit{23.6}{kbar}$, the ordered magnetic moments are fully suppressed via a second-order phase transition, and $T_{\rm{N}}$ is zero. Thus, we directly observed the quantum critical point at $\unit{23.6}{kbar}$ hidden inside the superconducting phase of CeRhSi$_3$.

Magnetic phase separation and superfluid density measurements in alkali metal-organic solvent intercalated iron selenide superconductor Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe2

We report the low-temperature electronic and magnetic properties of the alkali metal-organic solvent intercalated iron selenide superconductor Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe using muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The zero-field \muSR results indicate that nearly half of the sample is magnetically ordered and there is a spatial phase separation between the superconducting and the magnetic fraction. The transverse-field \muSR results show that the temperature dependence of the penetration depth λ(T) in the mixed state of Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe can be explained using a two-gap s+s-wave model with gap values of 6.82(92) and 0.93(7) meV. This implies that the symmetry of the superconducting gap in this system remains unaltered to the parent compound FeSe even after the intercalation with the molecular spacer layer. We obtain λ(0) = 485(21) nm at T = 0 K.

Pressure induced ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic Fe_1.03Te

The magnetic properties of Fe1.03Te under hydrostatic pressure up to p ~ 5.7 GPa were investigated by means of muon spin rotation, dc magnetization, and neutron depolarization measurements. With increasing pressure the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN decreases continuously from 70 K at ambient pressure towards higher pressures. Surprisingly, the commensurate antiferromagnetic order of FeTe enters a region of incommensurate and dynamical magnetic order before at p ~ 1.7 GPa the system turns ferromagnetic. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature TC increases with increasing pressure.

Superconducting properties of single-crystalline A_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_{2} (A=Rb, K) studied using muon spin spectroscopy

We report on the superconducting properties of A_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_{2} (A = Rb, K) single crystals studied with the muon spin relaxation or rotation (\muSR) technique. At low temperatures, close to 90% of the sample volumes exhibit large-moment magnetic order which impedes the investigation of their superconducting properties by \muSR. On the other hand, about 10% of the sample volumes remain paramagnetic and clearly show a superconducting response. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier density was analyzed within the framework of a single s-wave gap scenario. The zero-temperature values of the in-plane magnetic penetration depths λ_{ab}(0) = 258(2) and 225(2) nm and the superconducting gaps Δ(0) = 7.7(2) and 6.3(2) meV have been determined for A = Rb and K, respectively. The microscopic coexistence and/or phase separation of superconductivity and magnetism is discussed.

Superconductivity and magnetism in RbxFe2-ySe2: Impact of thermal treatment on mesoscopic phase separation

An extended study of the superconducting and normal-state properties of various as-grown and post-annealed RbxFe2-ySe2 single crystals is presented. Magnetization experiments evidence that annealing of RbxFe2-ySe2 at 413 K, well below the onset of phase separation Tp=489 K, neither changes the magnetic nor the superconducting properties of the crystals. In addition, annealing at 563 K, well above Tp, suppresses the superconducting transition temperature Tc and leads to an increase of the antiferromagnetic susceptibility accompanied by the creation of ferromagnetic impurity phases, which are developing with annealing time. However, annealing at T=488K=Tp increases Tc up to 33.3 K, sharpens the superconducting transition, increases the lower critical field, and strengthens the screening efficiency of the applied magnetic field. Resistivity measurements of the as-grown and optimally annealed samples reveal an increase of the upper critical field along both crystallographic directions as well as its anisotropy. Muon spin rotation and scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments suggest the coexistence of two phases below Tp: a magnetic majority phase of Rb2Fe4Se5 and a non-magnetic minority phase of Rb0.5Fe2Se2. Both microscopic techniques indicate that annealing the specimens just at Tp does not affect the volume fraction of the two phases, although the magnetic field distribution in the samples changes substantially. This suggests that the microstructure of the sample, caused by mesoscopic phase separation, is modified by annealing just at Tp, leading to an improvement of the superconducting properties of RbxFe2-ySe2 and an enhancement of Tc.

Superfluid density and superconducting gaps of RbFe_{2}As_{2} as a function of hydrostatic pressure

The superfluid density and superconducting gaps of superconducting RbFe_{2}As_{2} have been determined as a function of temperature, magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure by susceptibility and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. From the data, fundamental microscopic parameters of the superconducting state like the London penetration depth λ, the gap values Δ, the upper critical field B_{c2}, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κhave been obtained. In accordance with earlier measurements the ratio of the superfluid density n_{s} \propto λ^{-2} to the superconducting transition temperature T_{c}=2.52(2) K at ambient pressure is found to be much larger in the strongly hole-overdoped RbFe_{2}As_2 than in high-T_{c} Fe-based and other unconventional superconductors. As a function of pressure T_{c} strongly decreases with a rate of dT_{c}/dp = -1.32 K/GPa, i.e. it is reduced by 52 % at p = 1 GPa. The temperature dependence of n_{s} is best described by a two gap s-wave model with both superconducting gaps being decreased by hydrostatic pressure until smaller gap completely disappears at p = 1 GPa.

Coexistence of Magnetism and Superconductivity in the Iron-based Compound Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2

We report on muon-spin rotation/relaxation (\muSR), electrical resistivity, magnetization and differential scanning calorimetry measurements performed on a high-quality single crystal of Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2. Whereas our transport and magnetization data confirm the bulk character of the superconducting state below T_c = 28.5(2)K, the \muSR data indicate that the system is {\it magnetic} below T_N = 478.5(3)K, where a first-order transition occurs. The first-order character of the magnetic transition is confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry data. Taken all together, these data indicate in Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2 a microscopic coexistence between the superconducting phase and a strong magnetic phase. The observed ratio between T_N and T_c is the highest one reported to date for a magnetic superconductor.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Magnetism in FeSe_1-x under Pressure

An extended investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$ up to pressures of $p\simeq2.4$\,GPa by means of ac and dc magnetization, zero field muon spin rotation (ZF $μ$SR), and neutron diffraction is presented. ZF $μ$SR indicates that at pressures $p\geq0.8$\,GPa static magnetic order occurs in FeSe$_{1-x}$ and occupies the full sample volume for $p\gtrsim 1.2$\,GPa. ac magnetization measurements reveal that the superconducting volume fraction stays close to 100% up to the highest pressure investigated. In addition, above $p\geq1.2$\,GPa both the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ increase simultaneously, and both superconductivity and magnetism are stabilized with increasing pressure. Calculations indicate only one possible muon stopping site in FeSe$_{1-x}$, located on the line connecting the Se atoms along the $c$-direction. Different magnetic structures are proposed and checked by combining the muon stopping calculations with a symmetry analysis, leading to a similar structure as in the LaFeAsO family of Fe-based superconductors. Furthermore, it is shown that the magnetic moment is pressure dependent and with a rather small value of $μ\approx 0.2\,μ_B$ at $p\simeq2.4$\,GPa.

Interplay of composition, structure, magnetism, and superconductivity in SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y

Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y were synthesized and grown employing different synthesis methods and annealing conditions. Depending on the phosphorus and oxygen content, the samples are either magnetic or superconducting. In the fully oxygenated compounds the main impact of phosphorus substitution is to suppress the Néel temperature TN of the spin density wave (SDW) state, and to strongly reduce the local magnetic field in the SDW state, as deduced from muon spin rotation measurements. On the other hand the superconducting state is observed in the oxygen deficient samples only after heat treatment under high pressure. Oxygen deficiency as a result of synthesis at high pressure brings the Sm-O layer closer to the superconducting As/P-Fe-As/P block and provides additional electron transfer. Interestingly, the structural modifications in response to this variation of the electron count are significantly different when phosphorus is partly substituting arsenic. Point contact spectra are well described with two superconducting gaps. Magnetic and resistance measurements on single crystals indicate an in-plane magnetic penetration depth of 200 nm and an anisotropy of the upper critical field slope of 4-5. Muon spin rotation study of the intercalated graphite superconductor CaC6 at low temperatures

Muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments were performed on the intercalated graphite CaC6 in the normal and superconducting state down to 20 mK. In addition, AC magnetization measurements were carried out resulting in an anisotropic upper critical field Hc2, from which the coherence lengths xi_ab(0)=36.3(1.5) nm and xi_c(0)=4.3(7) nm were estimated. The anisotropy parameter gamma_H= H_c2_ab/H_c2_c increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. A single isotropic s-wave description of superconductivity cannot account for this behaviour. From magnetic field dependent muSR experiments the absolute value of the in-plane magnetic penetretion depth lambda_ab=78(3) nm was determined. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density rho_s(T) is slightly better described by a two-gap than a single-gap model.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the magnetic penetration depth in the Fe-based superconductor Ba_(1-x)Rb_(x)Fe2As2

Measurements of the magnetic penetration depth (lambda) in the Fe-based superconductor Ba_(1-x)Rb_xFe_2As_2 (x=0.3, 0.35, 0.4) were carried out using the muon-spin rotation muSR technique. The temperature dependence of lambda is well described by a two-gap s+s-wave scenario with a small gap Delta_1 = 1 - 3 mev and a large gap Delta_2 = 7 - 9 mev. By combining the present data with those obtained for RbFe_2As_2 a decrease of the BCS ratio 2Delta_2/(k_B)(T_c) with increasing Rb content x is observed. On the other hand, the BCS ratio 2Delta_1/(k_B)(T_c) is almost independent of x. In addition, the contribution of Delta_1 to the superfluid density is found to increase with x. These results are discussed in the light of the suppression of interband processes upon hole doping.

Tuning of competing magnetic and superconducting phase volumes in LaFeAsO$_0.945F_0.055 by hydrostatic pressure

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.945F_0.055 was studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p~2.4GPa by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and magnetization measurements. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic areas which coexist in the same sample are inclined towards spatial separation and compete for phase volume as a function of pressure.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of single-crystalline FeSe0.5Te0.5

Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Additionally, a minor hexagonal Fe_7Se_8 impurity phase was identified. The magnetic penetration depth λat zero temperature was found to be 491(8) nm in the ab-plane and 1320(14) nm along the c-axis. The zero-temperature value of the superfluid density ρ_s(0) λ^-2(0) obeys the empirical Uemura relation observed for various unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-pnictides. The temperature dependences of both λ_ab and λ_c are well described by a two-gap s+s-wave model with the zero-temperature gap values of Δ_S(0)=0.51(3) meV and Δ_L(0)=2.61(9) meV for the small and the large gap, respectively. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy parameter γ_λ(T)=λ_c(T)/λ_{ab}(T) increases with decreasing temperature, in agreement with γ_λ(T) observed in the iron-pnictide superconductors.

Anomalies in the Fermi surface and band dispersion of quasi-one-dimensional CuO chains in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8

We have investigated the electronic states in quasi one dimensional (1D) CuO chains by microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. We find that the quasiparticle Fermi surface consists of six disconnected segments, consistent with recent theoretical calculations that predict the formation of narrow, elongated Fermi surface pockets for coupled CuO chains. In addition, we find a strong renormalization effect with a significant kink structure in the band dispersion. The properties of this latter effect [energy scale (~40 meV), temperature dependence and behavior with Zn-doping] are identical to those of the bosonic mode observed in CuO2 planes of high temperature superconductors, indicating they have a common origin.

Comparative study of the pressure effects on the magnetic penetration depth in electron- and hole-doped cuprate superconductors

The effect of pressure on the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ was tested in the hole-doped superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-d) and in the electron-doped one Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 by means of magnetization measurements. Whereas a large change of $λ$ was found in YBa2Cu3O(7-d), confirming the non-adiabatic character of the electron-phonon coupling in hole-doped superconductors, the same quantity is not affected by pressure in the electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, suggesting a close similarity of the latter to conventional adiabatic BCS superconductors. The present results imply a remarkable difference between the electronic properties of hole-doped cuprates and the electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, giving a strong contribution to the long debated asymmetric consequences of hole- and electron-doping in cuprate superconductors.

Evidence for time-reversal symmetry breaking in superconducting PrPt4Ge12

Zero and longitudinal field muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments were performed on the superconductors PrPt4Ge12 and LaPt4Ge12. In PrPt4Ge12 below Tc a spontaneous magnetization with a temperature variation resembling that of the superfluid density appears. This observation implies time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in PrPt4Ge12 below Tc = 7.9 K. This remarkably high Tc for an anomalous superconductor and the weak and gradual change of Tc and of the related specific heat anomaly upon La substitution in La_(1-x)Pr_xPt_4Ge_(12) suggests that the TRS breaking is due to orbital degrees of freedom of the Cooper pairs.

The magnetic field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth for optimally doped SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_y was investigated by combining torque magnetometry, SQUID magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. The results obtained from these techniques show all a pronounced decrease of the superfluid density as the field is increased up to 1.4 T. Intrinsic and structural isotope effects in Fe-based superconductors

The currently available results of the isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature T_c in Fe-based high-temperature superconductors (HTS) are highly controversial. The values of the Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) exponent α_Fe for various families of Fe-based HTS were found to be as well positive, as negative, or even be exceedingly larger than the BCS value α_BCS=0.5. Here we demonstrate that the Fe isotope substitution causes small structural modifications which, in turn, affect T_c. Upon correcting the isotope effect exponent for these structural effects, an almost unique value of α~0.35-0.4 is observed for at least three different families of Fe-based HTS.

Iron isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature and the crystal structure of FeSe_1-x

The Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) on the transition temperature T_c and the crystal structure was studied in the Fe chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_1-x by means of magnetization and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). The substitution of natural Fe (containing \simeq 92% of ^{56}Fe) by its lighter ^{54}Fe isotope leads to a shift of T_c of 0.22(5)K corresponding to an Fe-IE exponent of α_Fe=0.81(15). Simultaneously, a small structural change with isotope substitution is observed by NDP which may contribute to the total Fe isotope shift of T_c.

Magnetic excitations of Fe_{1+y}Se_xTe_{1-x} in magnetic and superconductive phases

We have used inelastic neutron scattering and muon-spin rotation to compare the low energy magnetic excitations in single crystals of superconducting Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50 and non-superconducting Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75. We confirm the existence of a spin resonance in the superconducting phase of Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50, at an energy of 7 meV and a wavevector of (1/2,1/2,0). The non-superconducting sample exhibits two incommensurate magnetic excitations at (1/2,1/2,0)\pm(0.18,-0.18,0) which rise steeply in energy, but no resonance is observed at low energies. A strongly dispersive low-energy magnetic excitation is also observed in Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75 close to the commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector (1/2-δ,0,1/2) where δ\approx 0.03. The magnetic correlations in both samples are found to be quasi-two dimensional in character and persist well above the magnetic (Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75) and superconducting (Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50) transition temperatures.

Microscopic Study of the Superconducting State of the Iron Pnictide RbFe_2As_2

A study of the temperature and field dependence of the penetration depth λof the superconductor RbFe_2As_2 (T_c=2.52 K) was carried out by means of muon-spin rotation measurements. In addition to the zero temperature value of the penetration depth λ(0)=267(5) nm, a determination of the upper critical field B_c2(0)=2.6(2) T was obtained. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier concentration is discussed within the framework of a multi-gap scenario. Compared to the other "122" systems which exhibit much higher Fermi level, a strong reduction of the large gap BCS ratio 2Δ/k_B T_c is observed. This is interpreted as a consequence of the absence of interband processes. Indications of possible pair-breaking effect are also discussed.

We report on the synthesis of large single crystals of a new FeSe-layer superconductor Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2. X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder-diffraction and magnetization measurements have been used to compare the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 with those of the recently discovered potassium intercalated system KxFe2Se2. The new compound Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 shows a slightly lower superconducting transition temperature (Tc=27.4 K) in comparison to 29.5 in K0.8(FeSe0.98)2). The volume of the crystal unit cell increases by replacing K by Cs - the c-parameter grows from 14.1353(13) Å to 15.2846(11) Å. For the so far known alkali metal intercalated layered compounds (K0.8Fe2Se2 and Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2) the Tc dependence on the anion height (distance between Fe-layers and Se-layers) was found to be analogous to those reported for As-containing Fe-superconductors and Fe(Se1-xChx), where Ch=Te, S.

The superconducting and magnetic properties of Fe$_{y}$Se$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$ single crystals ($0.9\leq y \leq1.1$) were studied by means of x-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, muon spin rotation, and elastic neutron diffraction. We have studied magnetic excitations in \bis single crystals above $T_c$ with the method of surface spin decoration. The surface layer of diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl was used as a sensitive probe of magnetic field distortions. Anomalous asymmetry of the Fermi surface in the YBa2Cu4O8 high temperature superconductor revealed by Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We use microprobe Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy to study the Fermi surface and band dispersion of the CuO2 planes in the high temperature superconductor, YBa2Cu4O8. We find a strong in-plane asymmetry of the electronic structure between directions along a and b axes. The saddle point of the antibonding band lies at a significantly higher energy in the a direction (pi,0) than the b direction (0,pi), whereas the bonding band displays the opposite behavior. We demonstrate that the abnormal band shape is due to a strong asymmetry of the bilayer band splitting, likely caused by a non-trivial hybridization between the planes and chains. This asymmetry has an important implication for interpreting key properties of the Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) family, especially the superconducting gap, transport and results of inelastic neutron scattering.

We find three regimes of behavior in the phase diagram for 0\leq x\leq 0.5: (i) commensurate magnetic order for x< 0.1, (ii) bulk superconductivity for $x\lesssim 0.1$, and (iii) a range \sim 0.25\leq x\leq 0.45 in which superconductivity coexists with static incommensurate magnetic order. The results are qualitatively consistent with a two-band mean-field model in which itinerant magnetism and extended s-wave superconductivity are competing order parameters.

Comment on ``Muon-spin rotation studies of the superconducting properties of Mo_3Sb_7'', Phys.Rev.B 78, 172505 (2008)

In a recent article Tran et al. [Phys. Rev.B 78, 172505 (2008)] report on the result of the muon-spin rotation (\muSR) measurements of Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor. Based on the analysis of the temperature and the magnetic field dependence of the Gaussian relaxation rate σ_{sc} they suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is the superconductor with two isotropic s-wave like gaps. An additional confirmation was obtained from the specific heat data published earlier by partly the same group of authors in [Acta Mater. 56, 5694 (2008)]. The purpose of this Comment is to point out that from the analysis made by Tran et al. the presence of two superconducting energy gaps in Mo_3Sb_7 can not be justified. The analysis of \muSR data does not account for the reduction of σ_{sc} with increasing temperature, and, hence, yields inaccurate information on the magnetic penetration depth. The specific heat data can be satisfactory described within the framework of the one-gap model with the small residual specific heat component. The experimental data of Tran et al., as well as our earlier published \muSR data [Phys. Rev. B 78, 014502 (2008)] all seem to be consistent with is the presence of single isotropic superconducting energy gap in Mo_3Sb_7.

Evolution of two-gap behavior of the superconductor FeSe_1-x

The superfluid density, ρ_s, of the iron chalcogenide superconductor, FeSe_1-x, was studied as a function of pressure by means of muon-spin rotation. The zero-temperature value of ρ_s increases with increasing transition temperature T_c (increasing pressure) following the tendency observed for various Fe-based and cuprate superconductors. The analysis of ρ_s(T) within the two-gap scheme reveals that the effect on both, T_c and ρ_s(0), is entirely determined by the band(s) where the large superconducting gap develops, while the band(s) with the small gap become practically unaffected.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the penetration depth of the Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor

Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth λin superconductor Mo_3Sb_7 (T_c~2.1 K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of λ, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ, the first H_{c1} and the second H_{c2} critical fields at T=0 are λ(0)=720(100)nm, κ(0)=55(9), μ_0H_{c1}(0)=1.8(3)mT, and μ_0H_{c2}(0)=1.9(2)T. The zero temperature value of the superconducting energy gap Δ(0) was found to be 0.35(1)meV corresponding to the ratio 2Δ(0)/k_BT_c=3.83(10). At low temperatures λ^{-2}(T) saturates and becomes constant below T~0.3T_c, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors. Our results suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is a BCS superconductor with the isotropic energy gap

Orbital and spin effects for the upper critical field in As deficient disordered Fe pnictide superconductors

We report B_c2 data for LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs_{1-delta} in a wide T and field range up to 60 Tesla. The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_{T_c} by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_{+-} USC to CSC of an extended s_{++}-wave state or to a stabilized s_{+-}-state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.

Pressure Induced Static Magnetic Order in Superconducting FeSe_1-x

We report on a detailed investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe_1-x under pressures up to 1.4GPa by means of AC magnetization and muon-spin rotation. At a pressure \simeq0.8GPa the non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe_1-x enters a region where long range static magnetic order is realized above T_c and bulk superconductivity coexists and competes on short length scales with the magnetic order below T_c. For even higher pressures an enhancement of both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures as well as of the corresponding order parameters is observed. These exceptional properties make FeSe1-x to be one of the most interesting superconducting systems investigated extensively at present.

Probing the Ground State Properties of Iron-based Superconducting Pnictides and Related Systems by Muon-Spin Spectroscopy

In this short review, we attempt to give a comprehensive discussion of studies performed to date by muon-spin spectroscopy (more precisely the relaxation and rotation technique, also know as \muSR technique) on the recently discovered layered iron-based superconductors. On one side, \muSR has been used to characterized the magnetic state of different families of layered iron-based systems. Similarly the subtle interplay of the magnetic state and the structural transition present in some families has been investigated. We will also discuss the information provided by this technique on the interaction between the magnetic state and the superconducting phase. Finally the \muSR technique has been used to investigate the magnetic penetration depth of the superconducting ground state. The study of its absolute value, temperature and magnetic field dependence provides crucial tests for investigating possible unconventional superconducting states in such systems.

Superconductivity and Field-Induced Magnetism in SrFe_1.75Co_0.25As_2

Using muon-spin rotation, we studied the in-plane (λ_ab) and the out of plane (λ_c) magnetic field penetration depth in SrFe_1.75Co_0.25As_2 (T_c=13.3 K). Both λ_ab(T) and λ_c(T) are consistent with the presence of two superconducting gaps with the gap to T_c ratios 2Δ/k_BT_c=7.2 and 2.7. The penetration depth anisotropy γ_λ=λ_c/λ_ab increases from γ_λ=2.1 at T_c to 2.7 at 1.6 K. The mean internal field in the superconducting state increases with decreasing temperature, just opposite to the diamagnetic response seen in magnetization experiments. This unusual behavior suggests that the external field induces a magnetic order which is maintained throughout the whole sample volume.

Superfluid Density and Energy Gap-Function of Superconducting PrPt4Ge12

The filled skutterudite superconductor PrPt4Ge12 was studied in muon-spin rotation (muSR), specific heat, and electrical resistivity experiments. The continuous increase of the superfluid density with decreasing temperature and the dependence of the magnetic penetration depth λon the magnetic field obtained by means of muSR, as well as the observation of a T^3 dependence of the electronic specific heat establish the presence of point-like nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The energy gap was found to be well described by Δ=Δ_0| k_x - ik_y| or Δ= Δ_0(1 - k_y^4) functional forms, similar to that obtained for another skutterudite superconductor, PrOs4Sb12. The gap to T_c ratios were estimated to be Δ_0/k_BT_c = 2.68(5) and 2.29(5), respectively.

Two-gap superconductivity in Ba_1-xK_xFe_2As_2: A complementary study of the magnetic penetration depth by \muSR and ARPES

We investigate the magnetic penetration depth λin superconducting Ba_1-xK_xFe_2As_2 (T_c\simeq32K) with muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Using \muSR, we find the penetration-depth anisotropy γ_λ=λ_c/λ_{ab} and the second-critical-field anisotropy γ_{H_c2} to show an opposite T-evolution below T_c. This dichotomy resembles the situation in the two-gap superconductor MgB_2. A two-gap scenario is also suggested by an inflection point in the in-plane penetration depth λ_ab around 7K. The complementarity of \muSR and ARPES allows us to pinpoint the values of the two gaps and to arrive to a remarkable agreement between the two techniques concerning the full T-evolution of λ_ab. This provides further support for the described scenario and establishes ARPES as a tool to assess macroscopic properties of the superconducting condensate.

Unusual Fermi surface nesting in parent compounds of iron arsenic high temperature superconductors revealed by Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the band structure of BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2, two of the parent compounds of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors. We find clear evidence for band back folding and hybridization demonstrating that conduction electrons are strongly affected by the emergence of magnetic order. Our high quality data revealed that although the Fermi surface is strongly three-dimensional, it does indeed have long parallel segments along the kz direction that can lead to the emergence of magnetic order. More interestingly, we find very unusual incommensurate nesting of the Fermi surface in the a-b plane that is present only at low temperatures. We speculate that this is a signature of a failed Charge Density Wave (CDW) state that was predicted by renormalization group studies.

Zero-field superfluid density in d-wave superconductor evaluated from the results of muon-spin-rotation experiments in the mixed state

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration λ_{ab} in the optimally doped cuprate superconductor (BiPb)_2(SrLa)_2CuO_6+δ(OP Bi2201) by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR). We show that in unconventional $d-$wave superconductors (like OP Bi2201), \muSR experiments conducted in various magnetic fields allow to evaluate the zero-field magnetic penetration depth λ_0, which relates to the zero-field superfluid density in terms of ρ_s\proptoλ_0^-2.

Oxygen isotope effect on superconductivity and magnetism in Y_1-xPr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7-δ

Oxygen isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effects (OIE's) on the superconducting transition (T_c), the spin-glass ordering (T_g), and the antiferromagnetic ordering (T_N) temperatures were studied for Y_1-xPr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7-δas a function of Pr content (0.0\leq x \leq 1.0). The OIE on T_c increases with increasing x up to x\approx0.55, where superconductivity disappears. For decreasing x the OIE's on T_N and T_g increase down to x\approx 0.7 where antiferromagnetic order and down to x\approx0.3 where spin-glass behavior vanish, respectively. The OIE's on T_g and T_N are found to have {\it opposite signs} as compared to the OIE on T_c. All OIE's are suggested to arise from the isotope dependent mobility (kinetic energy) of the charge carriers.

Synthesis and Bulk Properties of Oxychloride Superconductor Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2

Polycrystalline samples and submillimeter size single crystals of Na-doped Ca2CuO2Cl2 have been synthesized under high pressure. A series of experiments showed that the Na content depends not only on the pressure during the synthesis but also on the synthesis temperature and time. From a comparison of the Na-CCOC data with those of structurally related La214 cuprate superconductors we concluded that chlorine at the apical site is less effective that oxygen in supplying charge carriers to the CuO2 plans. As a result, the coupling between the CuO2 planes is weakened, the transition temperature Tc is reduced and the anisotropic nature is enhanced.

Mixed order parameter symmetries in cuprate superconductors

The recent observation of an inflection point in the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic field dependence (lambda_ab) is investigated within a two-band model with coupled order parameters of different symmetries. While the dominant order parameter has d-wave symmetry, the smaller one is of s-wave symmetry. Superconductivity is robust in the d-wave channel and induced via interband interactions in the s-wave subsystem.

Temperature dependences of the upper critical field and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter of Li2Pd3B from magnetization measurements

We present temperature dependences of the upper critical magnetic field and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter for a ternary boride superconductor Li_2Pd_3B obtained from magnetization measurements. A specially developed scaling approach was used for the data analysis. The resulting H_c2(T) curve turns out to be surprisingly close to predictions of the BCS theory. The magnetic field penetration depth, evaluated in this work, is in excellent agreement with recent muon-spin-rotation experiments. We consider this agreement as an important proof of the validity of our approach.

Magnetic Properties of RuSr2RECu2O8 (RE=Gd, Eu) and Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-y Superconductors

Synthesis in 1% oxygen at 930C leads to non-superconducting RuSr2GdCu2O8 in which superconductivity subsequently can be induced with oxygen annealings without observable stoichiometric changes. Detailed ac susceptibility and zero-field muon spin rotation experiments reveal that the superconducting compounds always exhibit a lower temperature of the magnetic transition and larger values of the internal magnetic field in the ordered state of the Ru sublattice. The same annealings in oxygen, however, lead to non-superconducting RuSr2EuCu2O8. The magnetic properties of a newly discovered series of Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-y superconductors (maximum Tc=72 K for x=0.4) are reported. Low temperature behavior of the magnetization shows a significant contribution of the paramagnetic system of Gd ions to the magnetic response below the superconducting transition. Muon-spin rotation experiments reveal the presence of bulk magnetic transitions at low temperature for compounds with x<=0.4. XANES Cu-K absorption edge data show an increase in Cu valence with x.
