Automorphisms of cubic surfaces without points

We classify finite groups acting by birational transformations of a non-trivial Severi--Brauer surface over a field of characteristc zero that are not conjugate to subgroups of the automorphism group. Also, we show that the automorphism group of a smooth cubic surface over a field KK of characteristic zero that has no KK-points is abelian, and find a sharp bound for the Jordan constants of birational automorphism groups of such cubic surfaces.

Automorphisms of pointless surfaces

For a geometrically rational surface X over an arbitrary field of characteristic different from 2 and 3 that contains all roots of 1, we show that either X is birational to a product of a projective line and a conic, or the group of birational automorphisms of X has bounded finite subgroups. As a key step in the proof, we show boundedness of finite subgroups in any anisotropic reductive algebraic group over a perfect field that contains all roots of 1. Also, we provide applications to Jordan property for groups of birational automorphisms.

Bounds for smooth Fano weighted complete intersections

We prove that if a smooth variety with non-positive canonical class can be embedded into a weighted projective space of dimension nn as a well formed complete intersection and it is not an intersection with a linear cone therein, then the weights of the weighted projective space do not exceed n+1n+1. Based on this bound we classify all smooth Fano complete intersections of dimensions 44 and 55, and compute their invariants.

Coble fourfold, S6S_6-invariant quartic threefolds, and Wiman-Edge sextics

We construct two small resolutions of singularities of the Coble fourfold (the double cover of the four-dimensional projective space branched over the Igusa quartic). We use them to show that all S6S_6-invariant three-dimensional quartics are birational to conic bundles over the quintic del Pezzo surface with the discriminant curves from the Wiman-Edge pencil. As an application, we check that S6S_6-invariant three-dimensional quartics are unirational, obtain new proofs of rationality of four special quartics among them and irrationality of the others, and describe their Weil divisor class groups as S6S_6-representations.

Double Veronese cones with 28 nodes

We study nodal del Pezzo 3-folds of degree 11 (also known as double Veronese cones) with 2828 singularities, which is the maximal possible number of singularities for such varieties. We show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with smooth plane quartics and use this correspondence to study their automorphism groups. As an application, we find all GG-birationally rigid varieties of this kind, and construct an infinite number of non-conjugate embeddings of the group S4\mathfrak{S}_4 into the space Cremona group.

Burkhardt quartic, Barth sextic, and the icosahedron

We study two rational Fano threefolds with an action of the icosahedral group A5\mathfrak{A}_5. The first one is the famous Burkhardt quartic threefold, and the second one is the double cover of the projective space branched in the Barth sextic surface. We prove that both of them are A5\mathfrak{A}_5-Fano varieties that are A5\mathfrak{A}_5-birationally superrigid. This gives two new embeddings of the group A5\mathfrak{A}_5 into the space Cremona group.

On unitary submodules in the polynomial representations of rational Cherednik algebras

We consider representations of rational Cherednik algebras which are particular ideals in the ring of polynomials. We investigate convergence of the integrals which express the Gaussian inner product on these representations. We derive that the integrals converge for the minimal submodules in types B and D for the singular values suggested by Cherednik with at most one exception, hence the corresponding modules are unitary. The analogous result on unitarity of the minimal submodules in type A was obtained by Etingof and Stoica, we give a different proof of convergence of the Gaussian product in this case. We also obtain partial results on unitarity of the minimal submodule in the case of exceptional Coxeter groups and group B with unequal parameters.

Weakly-exceptional singularities in higher dimensions

We show that infinitely many Gorenstein weakly-exceptional quotient singularities exist in all dimensions, we prove a weak-exceptionality criterion for five-dimensional quotient singularities, and we find a sufficient condition for being weakly-exceptional for six-dimensional quotient singularities. The proof is naturally linked to various classical geometrical constructions related to subvarieties of small degree in projective spaces, in particular Bordiga surfaces and Bordiga threefolds.

Three embeddings of the Klein simple group into the Cremona group of rank three

We study the action of the Klein simple group G consisting of 168 elements on two rational threefolds: the three-dimensional projective space and a smooth Fano threefold X of anticanonical degree 22 and index 1. We show that the Cremona group of rank three has at least three non-conjugate subgroups isomorphic to G. As a by-product, we prove that X admits a Kahler-Einstein metric, and we construct a smooth polarized K3 surface of degree 22 with an action of the group G.
