Completions of the affine $3$-space into del Pezzo fibrations

We give constructions of completions of the affine $3$-space into total spaces of del Pezzo fibrations of every degree other than $7$ over the projective line. We show in particular that every del Pezzo surface other than $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ blown-up in one or two points can appear as a closed fiber of a del Pezzo fibration $π:X\to\mathbb{P}^{1}$ whose total space $X$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial threefold with terminal singularities which contains $\mathbb{A}^{3}$ as the complement of the union of a closed fiber of $π$ and a prime divisor $B_{h}$ horizontal for $π$. For such completions, we also give a complete description of integral curves that can appear as general fibers of the induced morphism $\barπ:B_{h}\to\mathbb{P}^{1}$.

Del Pezzo quintics as equivariant compactifications of vector groups

We study faithful actions with a dense orbit of abelian unipotent groups on quintic del Pezzo varieties over a field of characteristic zero. Such varieties are forms of linear sections of the Grassmannian of planes in a 5-dimensional vector space. We characterize which smooth forms admit these types of actions and show that in case of existence, the action is unique up to equivalence by automorphisms. We also give a similar classification for mildly singular quintic del Pezzo threefolds and surfaces.

Cylinders in del Pezzo fibrations

We show that a del Pezzo fibration $π$ : V $\rightarrow$ W of degre d contains a vertical open cylinder, that is, an open subset whose intersection with the generic fiber of $π$ is isomorphic to $Z\times\mathbb{A}_{K}^{1}$ for some quasi-projective variety Z defined over the function field K of W , if and only if d $\ge$ 5 and $π$ : V $\rightarrow$ W admits a rational section. We also construct twisted cylinders in total spaces of threefold del Pezzo fibrations $π$ : V $\rightarrow$ P 1 of degree d $\le$ 4.

Explicit biregular/birational geometry of affine threefolds: completions of A^3 into del Pezzo fibrations and Mori conic bundles

We study certain pencils of del Pezzo surfaces generated by a smooth del Pezzo surface S of degree less or equal to 3 anti-canonically embedded into a weighted projective space P and an appropriate multiple of a hyperplane H. Our main observation is that every minimal model program relative to the morphism lifting such pencil on a suitable resolution of its indeterminacies preserves the open subset P H â A^3. As an application, we obtain projective completions of A^3 into del Pezzo fibrations over P^1 of every degree less or equal to 4. We also obtain completions of A^3 into Mori conic bundles, whose restrictions to A^3 are twisted C*-fibrations over A^2 .

Families of affine ruled surfaces: existence of cylinders

We show that the generic fiber of a family of smooth $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-ruled affine surfaces always carries an $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-fibration, possibly after a finite extension of the base. In the particular case where the general fibers of the family are irrational surfaces, we establish that up to shrinking the base, such a family actually factors through an $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-fibration over a certain scheme, induced by the MRC-fibration of a relative smooth projective model of the family. For affine threefolds fibered by irrational $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-ruled surfaces, this induced $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-fibration can also be obtained from a relative Minimal Model Program applied to a relative smooth projective model of the family.

Unipotent Group Actions on Del Pezzo Cones

In a previous paper we established that for any del Pezzo surface Y of degree at least 4, the affine cone X over Y embedded via a pluri-anticanonical linear system admits an effective Ga-action. In particular, the group Aut(X) is infinite dimensional. In contrast, we show in this note that for a del Pezzo surface Y of degree at most 2 the generalized cones X as above do not admit any non-trivial action of a unipotent algebraic group.

Log-uniruled affine varieties without cylinder-like open subsets

A classical result of Miyanishi-Sugie and Keel-McKernan asserts that for smooth affine surfaces, affine-uniruledness is equivalent to affine-ruledness, both properties being in fact equivalent to the negativity of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension. Here we show in contrast that starting from dimension three, there exists smooth affine varieties which are affine-uniruled but not affine-ruled.

Affine cones over Fano threefolds and additive group actions

We address the following question: When an affine cone over a smooth Fano threefold admits an effective action of the additive group? In this paper we deal with Fano threefolds of index 1 and Picard number 1. Our approach is based on a geometric criterion from our previous paper, which relates the existence of an additive group action on the cone over a smooth projective variety X with the existence of an open polar cylinder in X. Non-trivial families of Fano threefolds carrying a cylinder were found in loc. cit. Here we provide new such examples.

Group actions on affine cones

We address the following question: Determine the affine cones over smooth projective varieties which admit an action of a connected algebraic group different from the standard C*-action by scalar matrices and its inverse action. We show in particular that the affine cones over anticanonically embedded smooth del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least 4 possess such an action. A question by Flenner and the third author whether this is also true for cubic surfaces, occurs to be out of reach for our methods. Nevertheless, we provide a general geometric criterion that could be helpful also in this case.
