$B_{\rm 1g}$ phonon anomaly driven by Fermi surface instability at intermediate temperature in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We performed temperature- and doping-dependent high-resolution Raman spectroscopy experiments on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ to study $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonons. The temperature dependence of the real part of the phonon self-energy shows a distinct kink at $T=T_{\rm B1g}$ above $T$$_{\rm c}$ due to softening, in addition to the one due to the onset of the superconductivity. $T$$_{\rm B1g}$ is clearly different from the pseudogap temperature with a maximum in the underdoped region. The region between $T$$_{\rm B1g}$ and $T$$_{\rm c}$ resembles that of superconducting fluctuation or charge density wave order. While the true origin of the $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonon softening is not known, we can attribute it to a gap on the Fermi surface due to an electronic order. Our results may reveal the role of the $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonon not only in the superconducting state but also in the intertwined orders in multilayer copper oxide high-$T$$_{\rm c}$ superconductors.

Electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in an alkaline earth hydride CaH$_6$ at high pressures

Recently, an alkaline earth hydride CaH$_6$ having a sodalitelike clathrate structure has been experimentally synthesized at megabar pressures with a maximum $T_c$ of 215 K, comparable to that of a rare earth hydride LaH$_{10}$. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we find that CaH$_6$ exhibits a huge peak in the Eliashberg spectral function $α^{2}F$ around the low-frequency region of H-derived phonon modes, in contrast to LaH$_{10}$ having a widely spreading spectrum of $α^{2}F$ over the whole frequencies of H-derived phonon modes. It is revealed that the huge peak of $α^{2}F$ in CaH$_6$ is associated with an effective electron-phonon coupling (EPC) between low-frequency optical phonons and hybridized H 1$s$ and Ca 3$d$ states near the Fermi energy. As pressure increases, the strengthened H$-$H covalent bonding not only induces a hardening of optical phonon modes but also reduces the electron-phonon matrix elements related to the low-frequency optical modes, thereby leading to a lowering of the EPC constant. It is thus demonstrated that H-derived low-frequency phonon modes play an important role in the pressure-induced variation of $T_c$ in CaH$_6$. Furthermore, unlike the presence of two distinct superconducting gaps in LaH$_{10}$, CaH$_6$ is found to exhibit a single isotropic superconducting gap.

Fermi arcs and pseudogap phase in a minimal microscopic model of $d$-wave superconductivity

We show conclusively that a pseudogap state can arise at $T > T_c$, for reasonable pairing interaction strength, from order parameter fluctuations in a two dimensional minimal model of $d$-wave superconductivity. The occurrence of the pseudogap requires neither strong correlation nor the presence of competing order. We study a model with attractive nearest neighbor interaction and establish our result using a combination of cluster based Monte Carlo for the order parameter field and a twisted-boundary scheme to compute the momentum-resolved spectral function. Apart from a dip in the density of states that characterizes the pseudogap, the momentum and frequency resolution on our effective lattice size $\sim 160 \times 160$ allows two major conclusions: (i)~at $T < T_c$, despite the presence of thermal phase fluctuations the superconductor has only nodal Fermi points while all non nodal points on the normal state Fermi surface show a two peak spectral function with a dip at $ω=0$, and (ii)~for $T > T_c$ the Fermi points develops into arcs, characterized by a single quasiparticle peak, and the arcs connect up to recover the normal state Fermi surface at a temperature $T^* > T_c$. We show the variation of $T_c$ and $T^*$ with coupling strength and provide detailed spectral results at a coupling where $T^* \sim 1.5T_c$.

Effect of strain-induced orbital splitting on the magnetic excitations in undoped cuprates

We investigate the magnetic excitations in view of the recent reports suggesting that the spin-wave energy may exhibit a significant dependence on the in-plane strain of a thin film of La$_2$CuO$_4$. The nature of dependence, as we find, can be explained naturally within a two-orbital model based on the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. In particular, as the orbital-splitting energy between the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals increases with compressive strain, the zone-boundary spin-wave energy hardens. However, the hardening persists only until the orbital splitting reaches $\sim$ 2eV, beyond which there is no significant change. The behavior of zone-boundary spin-wave energy is explained in terms of the extent of hybridization between one of the exchange-split $d_{x^2-y^2}$ band which is nearly half filled and the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ band. The role of second-order antiferromagnetic superexchange process involving the inter-orbital hopping is also discussed.

Pairing Mechanism of the Heavily Electron Doped FeSe Systems: Dynamical Tuning of the Pairing Cutoff Energy

We studied pairing mechanism of the heavily electron doped FeSe (HEDIS) systems, which commonly have one incipient hole band -- a band top below the Fermi level by a finite energy distance $ε_b$ -- at $Γ$ point and ordinary electron bands at $M$ points in Brillouin zone (BZ). We found that the system allows two degenerate superconducting solutions with the exactly same $T_c$ in clean limit: the incipient $s^{\pm}_{he}$-gap ($Δ_h^{-} \neq 0$, $Δ_e^{+} \neq 0$) and $s_{ee}^{++}$-gap ($Δ_h =0$, $Δ_e^{+} \neq 0$) solutions with different pairing cutoffs, $Λ_{sf}$ (spin fluctuation energy) and $ε_b$, respectively. The $s_{ee}^{++}$-gap solution, in which the system dynamically renormalizes the original pairing cutoff $Λ_{sf}$ to $Λ_{phys}=ε_b$ ($< Λ_{sf}$), therefore actively eliminates the incipient hole band from forming Cooper pairs, but without loss of $T_c$, becomes immune to the impurity pair-breaking. As a result, the HEDIS systems, by dynamically tuning the pairing cutoff and selecting the $s_{ee}^{++}$-pairing state, can always achieve the maximum $T_c$ -- the $T_c$ of the degenerate $s^{\pm}_{he}$ solution in the ideal clean limit -- latent in the original pairing interactions, even in dirty limit.

The Origin of Condensation Energy Scaling of the Fe-based superconductors

Motivated by the recent experiment of the non-BCS scaling relation of the condensation energy $ΔCE$ vs. $T_c$ ($ΔCE \sim T_c ^β, β\approx 3.5$) [PRB 89 140503 (2014)] for the Fe-based superconductors, we studied the CE and $T_c$ of the multiband BCS superconductors. We showed that the experimentally observed anomalous scaling relation $ΔCE \sim T_c ^{3.5}$ is well reproduced by the two-band BCS superconductor paired by a dominant interband interaction ($V_{inter} > V_{intra}$). Our result implies that this seemingly non-BCS-like scaling behavior, on the contrary to the common expectation, is in fact a strong experimental evidence that the pairing mechanism of the Fe-based superconductors is genuinely a BCS mechanism, meaning that "the Cooper pairs are formed by the itinerant carriers glued by a pairing interaction."

Anomalous scaling of the specific-heat jump $ΔC$ vs. $T_c$ in the Fe-based superconductors: the $\pm$S-wave pairing state model

The strong power law behavior of the specific heat jump $ΔC$ vs. $T_c$ ($ΔC/T_c \sim T_c ^α, α\approx 2$), first observed by Bud'ko, Ni, and Canfield (BNC)[1], has been confirmed with several families of the Fe-based superconducting compounds with a series of doping. We show here that this anomalous non-BCS behavior is an intrinsic property of the multiband superconducting state paired by a dominant interband interaction ($V_{inter} > V_{intra}$) reflecting the relation $\frac{Δ_h}{Δ_e} \sim \sqrt{\frac{N_e}{N_h}}$ near $T_c$, as in the $\pm$S-wave pairing state. Then this $ΔC$ vs. $T_c$ relation can continuously change from the perfect BNC scaling to a considerable deviation at lower $T_c$ region with a moderate variation of the impurity scattering rate.

Superconductivity-induced Phonon Renormalization on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

We report a study of the lattice dynamics in superconducting NaFeAs (Tc = 8 K) and doped NaFe0.97Co0.03As (Tc = 20 K) using Raman light scattering. Five of the six phonon modes expected from group theory are observed. In contrast with results obtained on iso-structural and iso-electronic LiFeAs, anomalous broadening of Eg(As) and A1g(Na) modes upon cooling is observed in both samples. In addition, in the Co-doped sample, a superconductivity-induced renormalization of the frequency and linewidth of the B1g(Fe) vibration is observed. This renormalization can not be understood within a single band and simple multi-band approaches. A theoretical model that includes the effects of SDW correlations along with sign-changing s-wave pairing state and interband scattering has been developed to explain the observed behavior of the B1g(Fe) mode.

Optical properties of iron-based superconductor LiFeAs single crystal

We have measured the reflectivity spectra of the iron based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 17.6 K) in the temperature range from 4 to 300 K. In the superconducting state (T < Tc), the clear opening of the optical absorption gap was observed below 25 cm-1, indicating an isotropic full gap formation. In the normal state (T > Tc), the optical conductivity spectra display a typical metallic behavior with the Drude type spectra at low frequencies, but we found that the introduction of the two Drude components best fits the data, indicating the multiband nature of this superconductor. A theoretical analysis of the low temperature data (T=4K < Tc) also suggests that two superconducting gaps best fit the data and their values were estimated as Δ1 = 1.59 meV and Δ2 = 3.15 meV, respectively. Using the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham (FGT) sum rule and dielectric function ε1(ω), the superconducting plasma frequency (ωps) is consistently estimated to be 6,665 cm-1, implying that about 59 % of the free carriers in the normal state condenses into the SC condensate. To investigate the various interband transition processes (for ω > 200 cm-1), we have also performed the local-density approximation (LDA) band calculation and calculated the optical spectra of the interband transitions. The theoretical results provided a qualitative agreement with the experimental data below 4000 cm-1

Shadow gap in the over-doped (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ compound

The electron band around $M$ point in (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ compound -- completely lifted above the Fermi level for $x > 0.7$ and hence has no Fermi Surface (FS) -- can still form an isotropic s-wave gap ($Δ_e$) and it is the main pairing resource generating an s-wave gap ($Δ_h$) with an opposite sign on the hole pocket around $Γ$ point. The electron band developing the SC order parameter $Δ_e$ but having no FS displays a {\it shadow gap} feature which will be easily detected by various experimental probes such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Finally, the formation of the nodal gap $Δ_{nodal}$ with $A_{1g}$ symmetry on the other hole pocket with a larger FS is stabilized due to the balance of the interband pairing interactions from the main hole band gap $Δ_h=+Δ$ and the hidden electron band gap $Δ_e = -Δ$.

Are there nodes in LaFePO, BaFe$_2$(AsP)$_2$, and KFe$_2$As$_2$ ?

We reexamined the experimental evidences for the possible existence of the superconducting (SC) gap nodes in the three most suspected Fe-pnictide SC compounds: LaFePO, BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$, and KFe$_2$As$_2$. We showed that while the $T$-linear temperature dependence of the penetration depth $λ(T)$ of these three compounds indicate extremely clean nodal gap superconductors, the thermal conductivity data $\lim_{T,H \rightarrow 0} κ_S (H,T)/T$ unambiguously showed that LaFePO and BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ are extremely dirty, while KFe$_2$As$_2$ can be clean. This apparently conflicting experimental data casts a serious doubt on the nodal gap possibility on LaFePO and BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$.

Evidence for +-s-wave pairing symmetry in LiFeAs: specific heat study

We report specific heat capacity measurements on a LiFeAs single crystal at temperatures down to 400 mK and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A small specific heat jump at Tc and finite residual density of states at T=0 K in the superconducting (SC) state indicate that there are strong unitary scatterers that lead to states within the SC gap. A sub-linear magnetic field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H) at T=0 K is equally well fitted by both a nodal d-wave gap as well as a sign changing multiband \pm s-wave gap. When impurity effects are taken into account, however, the linear temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C_{el}/T at low temperatures argues against a nodal d-wave superconducting gap. We conclude that the SC state of LiFeAs is most compatible with the multiband \pm s-wave SC state with the gap values Δ_{small}=0.46 Δ_{large}.

Two component spin-fermion model for high-$T_c$ cuprates: Applications to neutron scattering and ARPES experiments

Motivated by neutron scattering experiments in the high-$T_c$ cuprates, we propose the two-component spin-fermion model as a minimal phenomenological model which has both local spins and itinerant fermions as independent degrees of freedom. Our calculations of the dynamic spin correlation function provide a successful description of the puzzling neutron experiment data and show that: (1) the upward dispersion branch of magnetic excitations is mostly due to the local spin excitations; (2) the downward dispersion branch is from collective particle-hole excitations of fermions; and (3) the resonance mode is a mixture of both degrees of freedom. Using the same model with the same set of parameters we calculated the renormalized quasiparticle dispersion and successfully reproduced one of the key features of the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, i.e., the high energy kink structure in the fermion quasiparticle dispersion, hence further support the two component spin-fermion phenomenology.

Volovik effect on NMR measurements of unconventional superconuctors

We studied the Volovik effect on the NMR measurements of the two unconventional superconducting (SC) states, the d-wave and $\pm$s-wave states. We showed the generic field dependencies of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and Knight shift $K$ at low temperature limit in the pure cases as: $1/T_1 \propto H \log H$, $K \propto \sqrt{H}$ for the d-wave, and $1/T_1 \propto H$, $K \propto H$ for the $\pm$s-wave state, respectively. Performing numerical calculations we showed that these generic power laws survive for the good part of low field region with the realistic amount of impurities. We also found that the Volovik effect acts as an equivalent pair breaker as the unitary impurity scattering, hence induces the same temperature evolutions on $1/T_1$ and $K$, respectively, as the unitary impurities in both SC states. This finding implies that the Volovik effect should always be taken into account for the analysis of the NMR measurements in the mixed state.

Comment on "Violation of Anderson's Theorem for the sign-reversing s-wave state of Iron-Pnictide Superconductors" by Onari et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 177001(2009)[1]

We pointed out that the main claim of Ref.[1] that the presence of the orbital degree of freedom is essential to describe the correct impurity effects for Iron-based superconductors is incorrect and demonstrated the equivalent results of Tc suppression due to impurities by both the band basis model and the orbital basis model.

Evidence for dominant Pauli paramagnetic effect in the upper critical fields of a FeTe0.6Se0.4 superconductor

We investigate temperature-dependence of the upper critical fields Hc2(T) of a superconducting FeTe0.6Se0.4 single crystal by measuring resistivity in static magnetic fields up to 45 T. The observations of strong bending in the Hc2ab(T) curves and nearly isotropic Hc2ab(0) ~ Hc2c(0) ~ 48 T support the presence of strong Pauli paramagnetic effect. We show that the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula considering the Pauli limiting and the spin-orbit scattering together can effectively describe both Hc2ab(T) and Hc2c(T) curves. The enhancement in quasi-particle density of states or increased scattering resulting from Te(Se) vacancy or excess Fe is discussed as a possible origin for the manifesting Pauli paramagnetic effect.

Nearly isotropic upper critical fields in a SrFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_{2}$ single crystal

We study temperature dependent upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ of a SrFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_{2}$ single crystal (\textit{T$_c$}=20.2 K) along \textit{ab}-plane and \textit{c}-axis through resistivity measurements up to 50 T. For the both crystalline directions, $H_{\rm c2}$ becomes nearly isotropic at zero temperature limit, reaching $\sim$ 48 T. The temperature dependence of the $H_{\rm c2}$ curves is explained by interplay between orbital and Pauli limiting behaviors combined with the two band effects.

Volovik effect in the $\pm$s-wave state for the iron-based superconductors

We studied the field dependencies of specific heat coefficient $γ(H) = \lim_{T \rightarrow 0} C(T,H)/T $ and thermal conductivity coefficient $\lim_{T \rightarrow 0} κ(T ,H)/T$ of the $\pm$s-wave state in the mixed state. We found that it is a generic feature of the two band s-wave state with the unequal sizes of gaps, small $Δ_S$ and large $Δ_L$, that Doppler shift of the quasiparticle excitations (Volovik effect) creates a finite density of states, on the extended states outside of vortex cores, proportional to $H$ in contrast to the $\sqrt{H}$ dependence of the d-wave state. Impurity scattering effect on the $\pm$s-wave state, however, makes this generic $H$-linear dependence sublinear approaching to the $\sqrt{H}$ behavior. Our calculations of $\lim_{T \rightarrow 0} κ(T ,H)/T$ successfully fit the experimental data of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x )_2$ As$_2$ with different Co-doping $x$ by systematically varying the gap size ratio $R= |Δ_S | / |Δ_L |$. We also resolve the dilemma of a substantial value of $γ(H \rightarrow 0)$ but almost zero value of $\lim_{T \rightarrow 0} κ(T ,H \rightarrow 0)/T$, observed in experiments.

Model for the inverse isotope effect of FeAs-based superconductors in the $π$-phase-shifted pairing state

The isotope effects for Fe based superconductors are considered by including the phonon and magnetic fluctuations within the two band Eliashberg theory. We show that the recently observed inverse isotope effects of Fe, $α_{Fe} \approx -0.18 \pm 0.03 $,\cite{Shirage0903.3515} as well as the large positive isotope exponent ($α\approx 0.35$) can naturally arise for the magnetically induced sign revered s-wave pairing state within reasonable parameter range. Either experimental report can not be discarded from the present analysis based on the parameter values they require. The inverse and positive isotope effects mean, respectively, the interband and intraband dominant eletron-phonon interaction. We first make our points based on the analytic result from the square well potential model and present explicit numerical calculations of the two band Eliashberg theory.

Resonant impurity scattering in the $\pm$s-gap state of the Fe-based superconductors

We study the impurity scattering on the $\pm$s-wave superconductor, with realistic parameters for the Fe-pnictide superconductors. Using $\mathcal{T}$-matrix method, generalized for the two bands, we found that impurity scattering of the unitary limit forms off-centered bound states inside of the superconducting gap, which modifies, surprisingly, the density of states (DOS) of a fully opened gap to a V-shaped one as in the case of a d-wave superconductor. This behavior provides coherent explanations to the several conflicting experimental issues of the Fe-pnictide superconductors: the V-shaped DOS but with an isotropic gap observed in the photoemission and tunneling experiments; the power law behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1 \approx T^α$ ; $α\approx 3$), down to very low temperatures.

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the PuMGa$_5$ materials

We examine the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ of PuRhGa$_5$ and PuCoGa$_5$, both in the superconducting and normal states, as well as their Knight shifts. Results for both compounds are consistent with a superconducting gap of d-wave symmetry in the presence of strong impurity scattering, though with quite different gap-over-$T_c$ ratios $2 Δ_{0}/ k_B T_c$ (8 for PuCoGa$_5$ and 5 for PuRhGa$_5$). In the normal state, PuRhGa$_5$ exhibits a gradual suppression of $(T_1 T)^{-1}$ below 25 K, while measurements for PuCoGa$_5$ reveal a monotonic increase down to $T_c$. We propose that this behavior is consistently understood by the crossover from the two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnetic regime of the local $5f$-electron spins of Pu to the concomitant formation of the fermion pseudogap based on the two-component spin-fermion model.

$1/T_1$ in the D-wave superconducting state with coexisting antiferromagnetism

We consider a general D-wave superconducting gap function in the presence of coexisting antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-rang order. We find that the D-wave order parameter develops additional nodes without lowering the symmetry of the state due to the interplay of the superconducting and AFM correlations. This AFM correlated D-wave gap has a small gap structure inside the generic D-wave gap. As a result of this additional structure it shows a quite different response to impurities compared to a standard D-wave gap. We calculate the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of this gap in the presence of impurities and discuss the implications for the experiments of some AFM heavy- fermion superconductors and in particular for CeRhIn5.
