Effective connectivity signatures in major depressive disorder: fMRI study using a multi-site dataset

Diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) primarily relies on the patient's self-reported symptoms and a clinical evaluation. Effective connectivity (EC) from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) analysis can reflect the directionality of connections between brain regions, making it a candidate method to classify MDD. This study used Granger causality analysis to extract EC features from a large multi-site MDD dataset. The ComBat algorithm and multivariate linear regression were used to harmonize site difference and to remove age and sex covariates, respectively. Two-sample t-tests and model-based feature selection methods were used to screen for highly discriminative EC features for MDD, and LightGBM was used to classify MDD. In this large-scale multi-site rs-fMRI dataset, 97 EC features deemed highly discriminative for MDD were screened. In the nested five-fold cross-validation, the best classification model with the 97 EC features achieved accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 94.35%, 93.52%, and 95.25%, respectively. In another independent large dataset, which tested the generalization performance of the 97 EC features, the best classification models achieved 94.74%, 90.59%, and 96.75% for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, respectively. This work demonstrated that EC had a reasonable discriminative ability and supported the notion for using EC to potentially assist clinical diagnosis of MDD.

Crystal growth engineering and origin of the weak ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic matrix of orthochromates from $t$-$e$ orbital hybridization

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on intriguing magnetic properties of quasiferroelectric orthochromates. Large single crystals of the family of RECrO$_3$ (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds were successfully grown. Neutron Laue study indicates a good quality of the obtained single crystals. Applied magnetic-field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal their intrinsic magnetic properties, especially the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperatures. Density functional theory studies of the electronic structures were carried out using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional plus Hubbard $U$ method. Crystallographic information and magnetism were theoretically optimized systematically. When RE$^{3+}$ cations vary from Y$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ to Lu$^{3+}$ ions, the calculated $t$-$e$ orbital hybridization degree and Néel temperature behave similarly to the experimentally-determined AFM transition temperature with variation in cationic radius. We found that the $t$-$e$ hybridization is anisotropic, causing a magnetic anisotropy of Cr$^{3+}$ sublattices. This was evaluated with the nearest-neighbour $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Our research provides a picture of the electronic structures during the $t$-$e$ hybridization process while changing RE ions and sheds light on the nature of the weak ferromagnetism coexisting with predominated antiferromagnetism. The available large RECrO$_3$ single crystals build a platform for further studies of orthochromates.

Stability and the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation

We survey some recent progress on the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation. We discuss the role of geometric invariant theory (GIT) in approaching the solvability of the dHYM equation, following work of the first author and S.-T. Yau. We compare the GIT picture with the conjectural picture for dHYM involving Bridgeland stability. In particular, following Arcara-Miles, we show that on the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ any line bundle admitting a solution of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation is Bridgeland stable, but not conversely. Finally, we survey some recent progress on heat flows associated to the dHYM equation.

The tangential $k$-Cauchy-Fueter complexes and Hartogs' phenomenon over the right quaternionic Heisenberg group

We construct the tangential $k$-Cauchy-Fueter complexes on the right quaternionic Heisenberg group, as the quaternionic counterpart of $\overline{\partial}_b$-complex on the Heisenberg group in the theory of several complex variables. We can use the $L^2$ estimate to solve the nonhomogeneous tangential $k$-Cauchy-Fueter equation under the compatibility condition over this group modulo a lattice. This solution has an important vanishing property when the group is higher dimensional. It allows us to prove the Hartogs' extension phenomenon for $k$-CF functions, which are the quaternionic counterpart of CR functions.

The Yamabe operator and invariants on octonionic contact manifolds and convex cocompact subgroups of ${\rm F}_{4(-20)}$

An octonionic contact (OC) manifold is always spherical. We construct the OC Yamabe operator on an OC manifold and prove its transformation formula under conformal OC transformations. An OC manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if its OC Yamabe invariant is positive, negative or zero, respectively. On a scalar positive OC manifold, we can construct the Green function of the OC Yamabe operator, and apply it to construct a conformally invariant tensor. It becomes an OC metric if the OC positive mass conjecture is true. We also show the connected sum of two scalar positive OC manifolds to be scalar positive if the neck is sufficiently long. On the OC manifold constructed from a convex cocompact subgroup of ${\rm F}_{4(-20)}$, we construct a Nayatani type Carnot-Carathéodory metric. As a corollary, such an OC manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if the Poincaré critical exponent of the subgroup is less than, greater than or equal to $10,$ respectively.

Equilibrium Oil Market Share under the COVID-19 Pandemic

Equilibrium models for energy markets under uncertain demand and supply have attracted considerable attentions. This paper focuses on modelling crude oil market share under the COVID-19 pandemic using two-stage stochastic equilibrium. We describe the uncertainties in the demand and supply by random variables and provide two types of production decisions (here-and-now and wait-and-see). The here-and-now decision in the first stage does not depend on the outcome of random events to be revealed in the future and the wait-and-see decision in the second stage is allowed to depend on the random events in the future and adjust the feasibility of the here-and-now decision in rare unexpected scenarios such as those observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We develop a fast algorithm to find a solution of the two-stage stochastic equilibrium. We show the robustness of the two-stage stochastic equilibrium model for forecasting the oil market share using the real market data from January 2019 to May 2020.

On Conformal Qc Geometry, Spherical Qc Manifolds and Convex Cocompact Subgroups of ${\rm Sp}{(n+1,1)}$

Conformal qc geometry of spherical qc manifolds are investigated. We construct the qc Yamabe operators on qc manifolds, which are covariant under the conformal qc transformations. A qc manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if its qc Yamabe invariant is positive, negative or zero, respectively. On a scalar positive spherical qc manifold, we can construct the Green function of the qc Yamabe operator, which can be applied to construct a conformally invariant tensor. It becomes a spherical qc metric if the qc positive mass conjecture is true. Conformal qc geometry of spherical qc manifolds can be applied to study convex cocompact subgroups of ${\rm Sp}(n+1,1).$ On a spherical qc manifold constructed from such a discrete subgroup, we construct a spherical qc metric of Nayatani type. As a corollary, we prove that such a spherical qc manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if the Poincaré critical exponent of the discrete subgroup is less than, greater than or equal to $2n+2$, respectively.

Time Consistent Behavior Portfolio Policy for Dynamic Mean-Variance Formulation

When we implement a portfolio selection methodology under a mean-risk formulation, it is essential to correctly model investors' risk aversion which may be time-dependent, or even state-dependent during the investment procedure. In this paper, we propose a behavior risk aversion model, which is a piecewise linear function of the current wealth level with a reference point at a preset investment target. Due to the time inconsistency of the resulting multi-period mean-variance model with an adaptive risk aversion, we investigate in this paper the time consistent behavior portfolio policy by solving a nested mean-variance game formulation. We derive semi-analytical time consistent behavior portfolio policy which takes a piecewise linear feedback form of the current wealth level with respect to the discounted investment target.
